I think the internet and social networks

are, somehow, humanity's trash can.

And, like every trash can,

we can naturally lament what occurs and what is created in it

and, simultaneously, say this has a cathartic function.

Just like our great cities need sewage

to eliminate wastewater,

social networks are the sewage of the collective human psyche in a society.

Therefore, we must watch them and fidget because of them,

especially when, as in France, social networks are spaces

of terrorism instigation, of recruiting terrorists,

but these

racist and misogynist comments are everywhere.

That's not exclusive to Brazil, unfortunately

that's something universal, which is perhaps the price to pay

for the fact of living in multiracial and multicultural societies.

They're a way of evacuating prejudices.

On the topic of displays, the backup camera on the car is amazingly crisp.

It has a view straight from the cameras on the car, and it also has an aerial view that makes a tight parking spot look a whole lot more friendly.

The seats will give you a massage while you back up, too, if you want—or anytime.

One of the things the E300 didn't have at the time of the drive is the ability to communicate with other E-Class cars through the Car-to-X system, which the Mercedes reps said should come about month after its launch this summer.

So, if there's construction ahead—which is unfortunate on any road, but incredibly unfortunate when attempting to hoon on the winding Californian hills—one E-Class can warn all of the others about it.

The same goes for icy conditions or anything else.

The system can be updated over the air, so no worries about it going out of date.

Connected cars are coming, people.

Right now, we have a new E-Class that can only talk to other new E-Classes, but that's just the start.

If you end up crashing this car, Mercedes put a few things in place to make it easier on you with "Pre-Safe" systems.

When expecting a collision, the car will let out a sound that will kick in the stapedius muscle—don't worry, I'd never heard of it either—and make the sounds of the crash less damaging to the ear.

The seat bolsters and air bladders will also push the front passengers three inches closer to the center of the car before the impact, and put the body in motion to lessen the effects of the wreck.

A lot of the technology that will be integrated into new Mercedes cars comes in on the driving side of it, though, so let's talk about that now.

We Let The Damn Thing Drive Us, Kind Of.

I drove it, and it sometimes drove for me—but not as smoothly as would be expected in an era that promotes autonomy as right around the corner.

The car has more semi-autonomous capabilities than have ever been on the Mercedes lineup, with pilot systems for braking, accelerating, steering, cruise-control speed adjustments, lane changing, stopping and parking.

But don't pick your book up, because the car can't do everything.

If the driver isn't paying attention, there are some things it'll miss—things that could end in a fender bender.

With the Mercedes DISTRONIC system and steering pilot, the car does a great job in straight-line traffic.

It'll accelerate and brake all on its own, and adjust the wheel in order to keep in its lane.

But watch out if someone wants to merge.

Each time I had a slow, merging car approach the E300, the car didn't see it—at that point, the driver had to take control and accommodate for another car entering the lane.

The lack of sensory for merging cars was a problem throughout the camp, and myself and the other journalists were told that "it's still an assistance system and you're still in charge" as the driver.

When another car merges, the driver needs to be in control.

I'd driven to the track in a Grand Sport packing that GM eight-speed.

This is a gearbox I've also sampled in the Camaro, ATS-V, CTS-V, and the standard Corvette.

It's also a gearbox I don't much care for, because it seems to get confused easily or takes far too much time to kick down out of eighth and into something more useful.

If you're reading Jalopnik, I'm going to assume you would care to hear more about the seven-speed manual.

You're in luck because that's the transmission Chevy reserved for the track.

Right now, some of you are also wondering if I used the rev-matching feature.

My shoes are size 12 and I'm not the greatest heel-toe hero in the world.

I can do it, but if a given car has a computer system that can do it better, I'll yield.

If you're more Senna than Glucker, feel free to turn the system off.

You have a choice here, which is far better than having none at all.

The gearbox itself is 99 percent wonderful.

It slots into nearly every gear effortlessly and you can bang shifts around like you're Miles Teller trying to find the right tempo to keep JK Simmons from taking your head off.

For most shifts, that is.

On a number of my two-three upshifts, I missed 3rd and wound up in 5th.

On the road that's not the worst thing out there as all of those delicious torques will keep your passenger from realizing that you're an idiot.

Out on the track it's a different story, as your lap time, the corner approach, and your mood start to fall to shit.

This didn't happen every time, but it happened more than once.

I asked a few other journalists if they experienced this, and they said they had.

I reached out to even more journalists who drove on a prior wave, and the response was split.

Some commented that every shift was bolt-action crisp, while others also missed that two-three gear change.

This means there's a pretty damn good chance it was my overly aggressive attempts at cramming two into three, or perhaps some gentle care is actually required here.

Additionally, all other gear changes were excellent.

Especially during the tighter sections of track where I needed to haul down speed with some heavy braking, go three to two, and let the rev matching make me feel like Oliver Gavin for just a second.

Speaking of the brakes, the Grand Sport comes packing some serious stopping hardware.

The standard brakes come from Brembo, and they're nearly 14.5-inch rotors front and rear, with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers.

For the first time ever on the Grand Sport model, you can step up to the Z07 Package that is similar to the one you can get on the Z06.

This nets you overkill in the form of massive 15-inch carbon ceramic stopping gear.

The steel units never faded in a day spent with auto journalists fisting ham behind the wheels, while the carbon ceramics laughed at the very concept of "heat.".

Stomp on the less-fun pedal and you'll lean into your seatbelt as the Grand Sport can haul you down from 60-0 in less than 100 feet.

Amazingly, if you need to brake quickly and go from 25-0, this 'Vette can stop in a distance shorter than its own nose to tail length.

It takes more than brakes to turn good laps.

Thankfully, the Grand Sport gets all of the goodness from the Z06 chassis tuning department, and then it's tweaked further specifically for the car.

Magnetic ride control comes standard, and Chevy engineers crafted specific stabilizer bars and unique springs for the Grand Sport.

Out front, you'll find 19x10 inch wheels and the rear end gets 20x12 inch units.

That means the Grand Sport arrives to the party wearing 285 series tires near the nose and massive 335 rollers out back.

The standard tires come courtesy of Michelin, which provides Pilot Sports.

Wisely checking the Z07 box on the order form sees a jump to the toffee-sticky Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

With ambient track temperatures hovering near 100 degrees, all you have to do to warm up the tires is press the starter button.

gained the philosophy and knowledge

Baa, Baa, Black Sheep

Shocking as it may be, Baa, Baa, Black Sheep was not actually about a talking black sheep

that offered up its wool to a master, a dame, and a little boy who lives down the lane.

As with most nursery rhymes, many theories have been offered up about the meaning.

One of the more popular ones, according to Historic UK, is that it's about the heavy

taxation on wool in 13th-century Britain.

Supposedly, the "master" represented King Edward the 1st, the "dame" was the church,

and the "little boy" referred to all the shepherds who took care of the sheep.

Sadly, it seems as if the shepherds got a raw deal: in the original version, "the little

boy" didn't get any wool.

Humpty Dumpty

Many children can recite the nursery rhyme about Humpty Dumpty and his tragic misadventures

on a wall.

Glossing over the fact that this rhyme is basically about the accidental passing of

an egg-person, its origins might prove interesting.

According to Ancient Origins, "Humpty Dumpty" could have been a nickname for rotund people

in the 15th century, or it could have been a cannon used by the army of King Charles

the 1st in the English Civil War.

According to lore, the cannon was placed on top of the wall of a church until it was brought

down by enemy cannons, causing it to have a "great fall."

Apparently, the fall left it beyond repair, seeing how none of the King's men — or horses

— could fix it.

Rub-a-dub-dub

That old poem about a butcher, a baker, and a candlestick maker may not have been about

exploring career choices and then going to a fair after all.

In fact, according to London librarian Chris Roberts, some of the earliest versions of

Rub-a-dub-dub claims that there were three maids in a tub, instead of the three men.

The butcher, baker, and candlestick maker are still present, but it can be deduced that

they're intently watching whatever's going on in the tub between the three young ladies.

Take that as you will.

Oranges and Lemons

London's famous poem Oranges and Lemons is a rhyme that features the tolling of many

church bells across London, with many different interpretations and meanings.

In an article for the BBC, composer Benjamin Till explored whether or not someone's decapitation

helped inspire it.

One of the popular theories claims that the poem is full of references that include Henry

the 8th's marital problems, some torture devices used in the Tower of London, and even the

execution of prisoners at Newgate Prison.

For a poem concerning bells and produce, it sure does have some fairly disturbing origins.

Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater

A read of Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater might lead you to believe that this Peter fellow

was kind of a jerk who remarried and then became literate.

According to Treasury Islands, one of the origins of this strange tale involves Peter

being unable to act as a good husband and treating his first wife poorly.

Peter had a more domineering personality and kept his wife stuck in their home, where he

could exercise his control over her.

The wife must have gotten sick of his treatment, because he eventually remarried and became

more civilized after some time.

At least this rhyme sort of prepares kids for the complexities of adult relationships.

Lucy Locket

On the surface, the old English nursery rhyme Lucy Locket seems to be an innocent tale about

Military authorities of S. Korea, U.S. discussing possible delay of joint drills - Duration: 2:30.

Moon's gesture to the North is raising expectations next year's winter olympics could bring forth

a positive change in inter-Korean ties.

But will the drills be postponed,... and will Pyongyang respond?

Oh Jung-hee helps gauge the possibilities.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in reached out his hand to North Korea.

If the North halts its provocations until after the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics,...

then South Korea and the U.S. could consider postponing their joint exercises next spring.

The two countries' military authorities are discussing the matter... and their Combined

Forces Command said Wednesday... that it's committed to South Korea's decision on the

exercises.

But of course, this is to happen only if the North halts its provocations.

The Presidential Office of Cheong Wa Dae says... if Pyongyang carries out additional provocations,...

then that could worsen the international sentiment toward the regime and lead to additional UN

resolutions.

And that's why this proposal becomes a strong message to the North... that additional provocations

shouldn't take place.

(Korean) (3:13~4:01 + 6:00~6:44) "I believe the South Korean government is

trying to take the initiative... to reduce tensions and concerns of a possible war through

the Olympics.

The delay of the joint drills just applies for the duration of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter

Olympics... but if this becomes a good opportunity to open up communications between the North

and the U.S., then maybe we could see more dialogue."

But whether North Korea will show a positive response, or any response at all, to this

proposal is another question... and experts' views vary.

Some say the government can't expect a response from North Korea,... so it's still uncertain

What's currently under review is only the delay of the drills,... not the downsizing.

And the government left it as 'uncertain' whether the drills could be further postponed,...

LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon Microfighter review! 75193 - Duration: 5:04.

hello hello this is the Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon Micro Fighter it's the

second Micro fighter that we've gotten of the Millennium Falcon I can't believe

it's been over three years since the last one it seems like it was pretty

recently but this has a very similar build to the original because I guess

they kind of did a pretty good job in the first place for the scale they were

going for but of course there are some differences I mean this is the modern

trilogy version so it has the rectangular dish rather than a round one

they also changed the color for the print on the the kind of stand-in canopy

piece here that's actually a droid head that's been printed so rather than

printing the windows with black they've done it this time

with just dark grey okay that works and there are some small fine detail

differences around this but the size and the the primary build is basically the

same I think it it looks just as good as before it's not a little bit better what

I like more about this one than the original version is what they've done

for shooters they've integrated these stud shooters and those to me are so

much better than the flick fire missiles especially in this kind of form because

you know if you're playing with this if you're flying it around you're flying

around like this you're most likely holding on to it top and bottom or you

know perhaps you're holding on to it from the side but it's very easy to

transition to this and then you can just fire these things off one at a time it's

just so simple it's so easy they're consistent they work well I think they

look better even just you know for the sake of display they look closer to the

actual laser turret on the Falcon it's too bad you don't get a second one on

the underside but yeah that's far superior to the flick fire missiles

other than that I really can't complain I mean the shape is pretty good the

shape is interesting the better in this micro fighter

I think the more get it the more I feel it's way better

than the minifig scale ones yeah way better

Millennium Falcon original toy was the first Star Wars toy I ever touched in my

really good but you know the ones that are actually available for normal people

working bow caster the one that will shoot out a stud I think that those

those pieces were pretty nice wouldn't have been a bad idea to include one here

but I mean this this old beasts is not bad it's a perfectly fine stand-in I

guess yeah it works so this is just a way to offer up a micro Fighter

Millennium Falcon a lot of people get really cynical and see any kind of

basically re-release from Lego being just a way for them to try to squeeze

more money out of collectors and force people to to buy stuff because of

corporate greed but a lot of kids don't have this allow kids don't have the one

from 2014 and wanna Millennium Falcon and this is the cheapest way to get a

Millennium Falcon and it's a pretty good-looking one that you can actually

fly around you can actually play with you can even put a figure in it I think

this is a good thing to have on the market and I appreciate the fact that

they've actually updated it and made it def

better than the previous one with the inclusion of the stud shooters hey

that's a surprise stud shooters making something actually better and it's cheap

the other option would have been to just keep the original version on the market

forever being stale and just dying on shelves while fans talk about how Legos

being lazy not doing anything new I prefer this option myself I'm glad they

did it folks who already have the 2014 version who are perfectly happy with it

Today I'm going to answer a question: Is C++ really that bad?

I deserve it.

I know.

I know.

The name of this question asker is C++ Master.

I think that's on his birth certificate, The C++ Master.

He says, "Why do you say so many bad things about C++?

IT is the 3rd most used programming language and the 10th most paid.

Other than that, it is a pretty neat language that hasn't started stagnating and will probably

grow."

Then he's got additional info, "C++ Forever."

Why do I get such a bad rep on this?

Why do I give C++ such a bad rep?

I've done some videos on how to learn C++ which was a trick video.

You could check out the video where I talk about you shouldn't learn C++ and people get

upset about this.

People send me this stuff.

C++ Master sends me stuff as I'm hating on C++.

I've got to tell you, I have a love-hate relationship with C++.

I was a big C++ person for a long time.

I did Topcoder.

You can check out my career development story, my personal career story.

I loved it.

I still love the language.

It is very complex and elegant yet clunky and beautiful language at the same time, there's

so many—so many contradictions in the language.

Some of my best time that I ever had in my career coding was doing C++.

I see the beauty.

I see the art in it.

But when I'm advising people on this channel, I'm not advising them to follow their dreams

and follow their passions and to do things for the sake of making them harder on themselves.

I am giving them pragmatic and practical advice.

The reason why I "hate" on C++ so much on this channel has nothing to do with whether

I think it's a good language.

I think it's a great language.

I think it is evolving.

I think it's this superior language in many, many ways.

I think it is a valuable language and a lot of people are making a lot of money from it.

It is a very popular programming language and it will get to exist and be popular for

a long time.

I believe that, truly.

But, if you're asking me, if you're coming to this channel and you're like, "John, I

want to get started as a software developer.

How do I get started out?"

I'm not going to give you C++—I'm not going to say that that's the best way.

If you really want to go down that road, sure, go down it.

Fine.

It's great.

It's awesome.

You'll definitely have a good career and you'll be a master like C++ Master.

It's good.

You'll know more about programming than probably a lot of other people that deal with less

complex programming languages.

It's already hard enough to become a software developer today.

I wrote a book on the subject called The Complete Software Developer's Career Guide because

I felt like it was so hard.

You can check it out if you're interested, but I felt like it was so hard to become a

software developer because there is so much information, there's so much stuff out there.

So, how do we reduce this down?

How do we make this simple?

That's the whole reason why—like I said, I'm not hating on C++.

It's just a matter of a fact that the easier way, the path of least resistance, the most

practical and pragmatic way to become a developer is probably not to go down the C++ road.

Now, there are some reasons why you might do that, which is fine, but in general if

you're like, "John, I just want to become a software developer and want to get started,"

I want to start you on something easier.

I want to start you on something like Python, something that's going to be simpler and easier

so that you're not going to be as frustrated and that you're going to be able to—and

you could be just as effective in most of those languages as you could be in C++.

There are places where C++ is definitely better.

There are places where Rust is better.

In general, for a lot of the development that's being done today, the web development, mobile

development, an easier language is going to be—is going to serve you just as well.

To give you an honest question again, I appreciate a lot of you that are C++ gurus, I used to

be among your rank and I respect the dedication and the work.

It is a difficult—you—a lot of C++ developers are some of the best developers, of course,

because it's difficult, but I'm not going to recommend it.

I'm just not going to recommend it to beginners, because even though, you know, sometimes we

can be like these battle-scarred veterans and we can want to make the new recruits go

through the same tough training and regimen that we did, but that's not always the most

effective thing.

It doesn't make sense.

I'm going to do what makes sense on this channel.
