You Lord our Father
our Redeemer you are named forever.
Why do you let us wander O' Lord from your ways
and harden our hearts so that we fear you not?
Return for the sake of your servants
the tribes of your heritage.
O' that you would rend the Heavens
and come down with the mountains quaking before you
while you wrought awesome deeds we could not hope for
such as they had not heard of from old.
No ear has ever heard.
No eye has ever seen any God but you
doing such deeds for those who wait for him.
Would that you might meet us doing right
that we were mindful of you in our ways.
Behold you are angry and we are sinful.
All of us have become like unclean people.
All our good deeds are like polluted rags.
We have all withered like leaves
and our guilt carries us away like the wind.
There is none who calls upon your name
who rouses himself to cling to you.
For you have hidden your face from us
and have delivered us up to our guilt.
Yet O' Lord you are our Father.
We are the clay and you are the potter.

- Jesus said to his disciples be watchful, be alert.
You do not know when the time will come.
It is like a man traveling abroad.
He leaves home and places his servants
in charge each with his own work
and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch.
Watch therefore.
You do not know when the Lord of the house is coming
whether in the evening or at midnight
or at cock crow or in the morning.
May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping.
What I say to you I say to all.
Watch.
Gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
- These days most people keep vigils
because they're anxious.
Perhaps this year more than ever
we're aware of that in Las Vegas as we remember
all the prayer vigils that happened
after the tragedy of October the 1st.
But we also keep vigils in hospital corridors
waiting for news of a sick relative.
A parent stays up with an infant who might be teething
or have a high temperature,
we might even sit by the phone waiting
to be reassured that a loved one is safe and well,
or that we've passed an exam or gotten a job
most of these occasions are highly stressed vigils.
But some of the younger among us some of the more hearty
sometimes keep vigils filled with excited expectations
like those you see positioned in front of the Apple Store
days before the release of the latest iPhone
or waiting for tickets for a sports game or a concert.
It was not so long ago however that vigils
were a much more common feature of people's lives.
We often used to keep vigil with the dead.
We used to keep all night vigils of prayer.
The church has enshrined the experience of keeping vigil
through the vigil mass on Saturday night,
the vigil ceremony in the funeral rites,
and most importantly the great vigil at Easter.
This tradition starts again today in the gospel
where we are exhorted to be alert, to keep awake,
and to wait for the Lord to return.
In a sense this might sound strange
as we prepare for Christmas
but it's linked to the first preface of Advent which reads:
Now we watch for the day
hoping that the salvation promised us will be ours
when Christ our Lord will come in glory.
Our attention is then directed to a great future event
not the future feast that we're all
thinking about celebrating December 25th
but a far off future event and this is unique.
The other feasts of the church we usually remember
a past event like Holy Week or Pentecost
or we have feasts that proclaim a present reality
like Trinity Sunday but not on the first Sunday of Advent.
Here we talk about
the return of the Lord at the end of time
and it's a bridge between the last days of the church here
which we've already been celebrating over recent weeks
and the first day of the church's new year.
How does the church ask us to approach this feast?
As a vigil but not as a vigil of anxiety
where we never want to hear the worst news
or not as a vigil of excited anticipation
where we pin our happiness on a event
but a vigil of hope
where we wait and trust in a person who has shared our lot,
who understands our frailties,
and who loved us even to death.
We place our hope in Jesus the Christ,
our brother, our Savior, our friend
and this first Sunday of Advent
we look beyond Christmas to the final moment
when Heaven and Earth will be united
and our vigil will be complete.
On that day we believe the sun will have dawned
once and for all on the world.
Now don't you think that's something
worth being alert and awake to see?
The first Sunday of Advent is like the first days
of other vigils where we pitch our tents
and begin to wait to make sure that we have
front row seats for what is going to be when it arrives.
Over the last three weeks the passages in Matthew 25
were reminders about our continuing to prepare
for the coming of the kingdom.
This week with the beginning of Advent
it's the gospel of Mark that also reminds us
we can't take that kingdom for granted
that we must remain vigilant
in working to realize the kingdom.
This vigilance needs to be applied
to nurturing our own faith
as well as to making a difference
in the lives of those around us
especially the most needy in our society.
Rather than stay awake
maybe some of us need to be told to wake up.
It's never too late to pay closer attention to faith.
Perhaps this Advent season is the ideal time to do that.
The season of Advent begins this week
and continues through the four Sunday's of Advent
and ends on Christmas Eve.
This first week of Advent focuses on the return of the Lord
and the following weeks more specifically
focus on anticipation of the birth of Jesus.
Rather than simply commemorating an historical event
Advent is a time to prepare our hearts to receive Jesus
into the world each year.
Let us profess our faith.
- [Congregation] I believe in one God, the Father Almighty
maker of Heaven and Earth
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only begotten Son of God
born of the Father before all ages
God from God, light from light,
true God from true God,
begotten not made consubstantial with the Father
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from Heaven
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate
of the Virgin Mary and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the scriptures.
He ascended into Heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord the giver of life
who proceeds from the Father and the Son
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.
