12 Days of Christmas: Day #2 Don't eat poorly ALL month! - Duration: 0:59.

- Hi everyone, welcome again to the 12 Days of Christmas.

This is gonna be Day two and we're gonna talk

about not eating poorly all month long.

Don't use the holiday as an excuse

to just let all your good eating habits

go totally down the drain.

Okay, there may be a few days,

there may be a week full of days

where you're going to have special meals,

where you may be going to parties and doing things

that are just out of the ordinary

and they just come heavier at the holiday season.

But listen, that's no excuse

to just let everything fall apart all month long.

Okay, you have many other days that you can work

with a healthy routine, make healthier choices

and then remember, on the days

that you do have things going on,

don't starve all day saving up for the big dinner, whatever,

still continue to eat healthy.

This way when you're out, you won't just like totally inhale

all the food.

So try and keep that in mind this month

and you're one minute closer to a healthier you.

Have a great day.

Family in Stockholm, dad's in Hamburg VLOG - Duration: 12:47.

Hey hey! It's weekend morning. Alma's slept at her extra grandmother's house.

Tanja.

Yeah Tanja, but I call her extra grandmother. She's actually the mother of my friend.

Alma's known her since she was new-born.

Harry's watching YouTube. Daddy Axel is working in Hamburg.

What's Hamburg?

It's a city in Germany.

Far away.

Yes it's far away. What are we doing today?

Buy a Santa costume. Look!

Oh, YouTube went to sleep. It wants you to talk to the camera. No, I'm just kidding.

I don't know if you can hear me, it's very noisy. I'm in a shipyard called Blohm+Voss in Hamburg.

I'm working on a cruise ship. I'm out on deck and it's raining. 2,000 workers are on the ship for 10 days.

There's a lot to be done. The pools are going to be renovated, all carpets and beds will be replaced.

Several systems are going to be remodeled and modernized.

You can see three enormous boxes behind me on the wharf. One is half of an Exhaust Gas Cleaning system.

You can see four tops down there. We're installing four systems with pipes, drains and pumps.

This shipyard is huge and has been here since 1877. It's fun to be here, there's so much going on.

Oh look mommy our camera!

Yes. Be careful! Can you tell the camera what we're going to do now?

We're going to find a "pinch pincher" and a Santa costume. And eat something.

We're buying a pinch pincher first!

We're on our way to the shops and Harry wants to but a robot arm.

Yeah, I'd like to buy that first.

That's what he calls a pinch pincher.

Show me Harry.

Is that what you want?

Yes!

What?

Look reindeers.

Harry makes up a song.

What are you doing?

I want to destroy the glass.

No, let me tell you what to say to your reflection in the mirror.

Look in the mirror and say: Hey, you are beautiful.

Hey, you are beautiful.

It feels good, right?

Show me.

Look what I got.

I'm a hero.

We didn't find a robot arm. So Harry got a foam rubber sword. That's cool, right?

I want yo eat my pancake with whipped cream.

Jam and whipped cream.

Do you miss Alma?

Yes.

Do you miss dad?

Yes.

I miss them too. It's better when the four of us are together.

What's happening?

I want to sleep here.

You can't sleep in a café.

Yes, you can sleep in a stroller in a café.

But you don't have a stroller, let's cycle back home and put you to bed.

Yes.

I'm standing at the bow of the ship now. This is usually a nice place to hang out.

But it's full of building material, garbage, tools and so on. This is the only quiet place on the whole ship.

It's been hard find a place where I can talk to you.

It's welding, grinding and building work going on everywhere.

There's so much noise and so many people working on this ship.

Hamburg is a port city. You can see all the harbor cranes behind me. It's full of them.

It's 2 PM and we're back home. Harry fell asleep right away. We have a viewer question about kids and sleep.

How long is Harry sleeping during the day. Is Alma sleeping during the day? If so, how long?

Alma's not sleeping during the day anymore but she did until she removed her tonsils.

Harry sleeps sleeps for an hour during the day. If he sleeps longer he can't fall asleep at night.

I'm going to do something fun now, or not. I have this pile of papers that I've collected around the apartment.

We always end up having several piles with papers around. It's mail, kids drawings and so on.

Once in a while I freak out and put all the piles together into one big pile that I sort out.

Does this ever happen to you?

Hiiiiii

Are you happy to see your sister?

I've missed you.

Me too.

It's so empty without you and daddy in the house.

It's like someone's shaken our home.

Yeah it's been turned upside down and something's missing.

We're going to answer Question of the day. It's been asked by a few, what do we say then..?

We roll the names.

And the question is for the two of you. We can't see you Harry, get down here.

What's your favorite toy?

This is my favorite.

What is it?

It's a giraffe from South Africa.

I like to play with this.

It's a tool belt. I'll put it on.

See!

Neat.

Alma, you need to cut your hair.

I'll never cut my hair!

You have yo and so do I. We look like two trolls.

That's good!

A troll mother and a troll child.

No.

Let's go to the hairdresser together. I'll ask my hairdresser if she can cut us both.

Ok.

Let's do it before the livestream because I want us to look decent then.

Your cheeks look like mango.

Really?

Yeah, crushed mango.

We'll do a livestream for charity, Videohjälpen, Friday December 8, from Kulturhuset in Stockholm.

Have a look at it on our channel, and if you want to see us you can be there as a live audience.

We will have a fan meet at 4 PM.

I've just had dinner in this restaurant. I'm going back to my hotel now.

Bye daddy, I love you!

Why did I do that?

Do what?

I hung up although I didn't want to.

You have to hang up the phone sooner or later.

Thank you for watching this video. Please leave a thumb up or down.

Subscribe, comment, recommend us, philosophize and post questions.

Take care until next time. Bye!

Top 10 WEIRDEST Things Americans Do! - Duration: 10:33.

From tipping a bunch to being overly friendly, here are 10 things Americans do that everyone

else thinks is weird!

#10 Tipping When you ask a foreigner what the oddest thing

Americans do is, chances are tipping is on the list.

In most countries, tipping is a way to show your appreciation for good service.

In America, it is seen as rude to not leave a tip, and with big parties, it is often a

mandatory.

Outsiders are generally confused when they are told that it is common to tip an unhelpful

server with a 15-20% cut of the price you already paid.

This is also not always understood as many foreigners do not know that the hourly wage

that a waitress gets paid can be as low as $2.13, much below the minimum wage.

This is because it is expected that the majority of their income is drawn from tips left by

customers.

Many are also confused that bellboys, taxi drivers, and porters expect tips while housekeepers

and flight attendants do not.

Even hairdressers, who receive the majority of your pay already, expect to get extra money

for their service.

This tip can be up to 20% of what you have already paid.

#9 Big Servings When first arriving in America, most foreigners

will go to a nearby restaurant and order a meal.

What greets them is a portion size that could feed their entire family.

What most of us, even as Americans, don't know is the reason behind this.

After World War II, farmers made agricultural leaps and bounds as they found ways to grow

more food by using pesticides and chemicals.

This fact itself is repulsive to foreigners and many Americans, yet that doesn't stop

us from consuming it.

After the boom in crops, restaurants found out that bigger serving sizes actually brought

in more business.

They could increase the price of their food, customers would buy it, and the businesses

would receive more profit.

Though, even if they simply gave bigger servings without an increase in price, the increased

business they got was worth the loss, as the profit was still astounding.

Over the last twenty years, portion sizes in America have doubled.

Pre-2000, a quarter-pound burger was standard.

Today, most Americans prefer a half-pound of beef.

At the same time the smaller burgers were preferred, they were served with 6oz drinks.

Today, most Americans order 20oz drinks.

Another odd thing is if you don't finish your meal in America, 99% percent of restaurants

will let you take your food home!

This includes freebies such as rolls or tortilla chips!

#8 Service The service in America has been called amazingly

hospitable as well as completely nerve-wracking.

To start with, most foreigners are not used to the year round ice being added to your

drinks and they often ask for no ice in the winter.

On top of that, a waiter will come by your table every 30 seconds to ask if you want

a refill on that icy drink.

A FREE refill.

They will actually dump out your drink and replace it with a fresh one.

Do you want that to go?

Do you need ketchup?

Can I get you anything else?

How about dessert?

What is expected by the wait staff in America is often seen as a nuisance in other countries.

"If I need something I will let you know, you don't need to check on me every 2 minutes.

I am an adult," may sound rude to the servers, but in actuality, they just mean what they

say.

Foreigners often believe that Americans are incapable of doing anything themselves.

People will bag your groceries for you.

In fact, it is a job title and the sole purpose of certain individuals while at work.

After they've bagged your groceries, they will even carry them out and pack them in

your car for you!

#7 Friendly Strangers In America, it is common to walk by a stranger

only to have them stare at you, as smile on their face.

In other countries, this is often seen as creepy, and is a way of asking for a scowl.

Sometimes it is brushed off as, "those friendly Americans."

Other times, it can make others feel very uncomfortable.

It is especially common in the American Midwest for strangers to smile and ask, "How are

you?"

This is usually answered with, "Sorry, do I know you?"

Both sides see the other as rude.

But on one hand, the American is just making conversation, seeing nothing out of the ordinary

with asking how someone is, what they are doing in town, where they are from, how many

children they have, etc.

It wouldn't be strange to let this stranger leave with a hug and a pat on the back.

But the foreigners sees someone who is asking for an abundance of unnecessary information

and will either suspect foul play and accuse the interrogator of such or just ignore them

entirely.

This…is why Americans and Brits live believing the other is rude.

#6 "Football" Every other country on Earth knows football

as what Americans call Soccer.

But to Americans, football is an entirely different game.

They invented a game and stole the name of the world's most popular sport.

The argument as to what "football" is has destroyed friendships and built boundaries.

It is hard for other countries to understand America's obsession with the sport, especially

with their need to belittle soccer and refusal to call it football.

It is true that many Americans do not like soccer, but it is also true that many Americans

love soccer.

As for the name, well, you can't say football in American and be understood unless you are

referring to American Football.

Yes, American Football uses mostly hands and very little foot action is required, whereas

with soccer, the majority of the game is played with your feet.

Although association football, or soccer, has been around since Ancient China, the debate

as to when both it, as well as American Football hit the States will continue to be an argument

amongst fans of both sports.

#5 Flags Flags…flags everywhere!

Nearly every visitor from every outside country will see America's obsession with flags

as an oddity.

It isn't that the other countries do not carry their pride or patriotism.

It is simply that they choose to not show it off in such an "obnoxious' way.

Many believe that it takes away from the sanctity and class from your nation's symbol by hoisting

it above every fast food joint and grocery store.

By plastering it on millions of t-shirts, cakes, Christmas trees, and completely commercializing

such a special, sacred icon of freedom.

Of America.

It is also often seen as a chauvinistic display against other countries.

As if to say, "You're in America now!"

This is just one viewpoint, however, for many foreigners view it as a love of country and

patriotism.

#4 Commercials Those born and raised in the States may not

know that TV commercials vary depending on which country you live in.

But foreigners who visit America have brought the fact to light.

For starters, they have stated that about 33% of their time spent watching primetime

television is on commercials.

This has been called a complete and utter waste of time.

It must also be said that many commercials on American TV has been deemed lo-quality

and unnecessary.

But what is worse than that is the fact that there are a few commercials that we as Americans

disregard whereas the British population is outraged.

One type of commercial is those involving male-medication and another involving feminine

products.

Both of these have raised unwanted questions out of the mouths of young Brits.

Another is a very common commercial that Americans laugh at, a brow in the air.

The commercial?

Toilet paper.

The whole "dirty bottom with tissue paper left behind" is one thing, but the image

of a mother cleaning off her child's bare bottom is another.

They may be bears, but the message is still there.

But what was the most "outrageous" American TV commercial to date?

Well, in 2005, KFC released a commercial that pictured call center workers….eating with

their mouth open.

This was seen as too much.

Completely offensive and uncalled for.

#3 Prescriptions An entirely different type of commercial in

America is those for prescriptions.

While these may be present in other countries, there is one thing that is not.

That would be, the ease of receiving one of these prescriptions.

In American, it is known that over 70% of all individuals are on some form of medication.

In the UK, it was a big milestone a couple of years ago when it was announced that number

had reached almost 50% of Britons.

As for the world as a whole, Americans consume eighty percent of the world's prescription

pain pills.

Since America only takes up 5% of the entire world's population, that is a very concentrated

intake of pain killers.

The reason why this is happening is that all one must do is "ask their doctor" about

a certain medication and it is practically granted to them with minimal questioning.

Even if you don't have a specific prescription in mind, it's fairly easy to convince your

doctor to prescribe one.

In fact, even when you don't ask for one, chances are, you'll get one anyway for even

the smallest illness or injury.

#2 Misleading Price Tags In most countries, price tags name the actual

price of the item.

You may say, "Well, so does America!"

But this is simply untrue.

If an item says five dollars, a five dollar bill will simply not do.

Why is this?

Taxes of course!

When an item is priced at $5, we as Americans, mentally calculated tax as well.

In other countries, this is often calculated for you.

Why don't they do this in America?

Well, America thrives of being profitable, on marketing.

If legally, they can slam a lower price tag on an item, why not do it?

Everyone else in the country is!

It's something we're used to, but it is quite unfair to others who are left with added

cost due to the fact that, where they come from, the price tag lists the price they will

pay!

#1 Public Restrooms This might be the biggest complaint that non-Americans

have for America.

The public restrooms in America suck!

Or so they say.

It is quite disturbing when you are sitting in the stall taking care of business and a

stranger walks by, taking a peek.

Either unintentionally or not.

Can you imagine the horror if you hadn't lived this way your entire life?

Even Americans have their complaints about this atrocity, but hey, by now its life.

In Europe, most public stalls are fully enclose, much like a private bathroom.

In America, the average stall has a good two inch gap on each side and a couple feet both

above and below the door.

On the other side, urinals in Europe are much less private than in America, for there are

rarely dividers between them.

Just as well, bidets are also much more common in Europe than in America.

Thanks for watching!

Easter Eggs You Missed In Coco - Duration: 5:26.

The phrases "Pixar movie" and "Easter eggs" go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Fans always anticipate the studio's freshest release to be full to bursting with fun references

and winks to pop culture, and director Lee Unkrich's journey into the Land of the Dead

with Coco is by no means an exception.

Here are just a few of the Easter eggs in Coco you may have missed.

And it goes without saying, but spoilers ahead.

Famous food delivery

A Pixar movie must, the Pizza Planet delivery truck first appeared in 1995's Toy Story,

and has popped up in almost every single film the animation studio has rolled out since.

The truck sits outside a trailer in A Bug's Life, drives across a bridge in Ratatouille

— and it can be spotted in Coco right outside Miguel's house near the beginning of the movie.

As the young boy stares wistfully outside, the Pizza Planet truck zooms past his window.

The anticipated A113

Like the Pizza Planet truck, the letter-number combination of "A113" has deep roots in the

Pixar film pantheon, though it extends its reach into plenty of non-Pixar animated films

and television shows.

The four-figure code is actually a reference to Room A113, the classroom that animation

industry A-listers attended at California Institute of the Arts.

And just like in every other Pixar movie, A113 shows up in Coco, specifically in the

Land of the Dead, written backwards on the door of the Bureau of Family Grievances, where

the deceased members of the Rivera family go to coordinate a way to send Miguel back

where he belongs.

Pixar Piñatas

Sticking with the nods to Pixar projects past, Coco also features a tucked-away reference

to a few of its other movies: Toy Story and Monsters, Inc.

As Miguel dashes through his village's market toward the central plaza in the beginning

of the movie, viewers will notice that he runs past a bundle of piñatas in the shape

of cowboy Woody and astronaut Buzz from Toy Story, and the one-eyed, green-skinned monster

Mike Wazowski from Monsters, Inc.

Near the back of the piñata pack is a turquoise one, likely designed to look like Mike's partner

Sully.

Familiar figurines

After grabbing a bite to eat on his way to the plaza, Miguel happens upon a table lined

with alebrijes [ah-lay-BREE-hayz], Mexican folk art sculptures that depict fantastical

creatures painted in bright colors and bold patterns.

Hidden amongst these striking sculptures are small figurines of the clownfish Marlin and

Nemo and the regal blue tang fish Dory from Finding Nemo.

Look carefully and you'll also see trinkets of the rat chef Remy from Ratatouille and

the whale shark Destiny from Finding Dory.

Never-forgotten Nemo

There's yet another Nemo figure for viewers to find in Coco, this time on the Rivera family's

ofrenda.

You'll spot the little guy during the scene in which Abuelita Elena places the photo of

Mama Coco, Mama Imelda, and Miguel's great-great-grandfather.

He sits atop a jar on the righthand side of the screen, just behind a mustachioed skeleton

in a suit and top hat.

The Luxo Ball

Pixar's famous ball, officially called the Luxo Ball in reference to the studio's first-ever

animated short Luxo Jr., is yet another staple of the studio's efforts.

The yellow bouncy ball, adorned with a thick blue stripe and red star, appears in Coco

during the rehearsal sequence featuring Frida Kahlo.

Watch the background carefully as Dante the dog and Frida's monkey run after each other

in the workshop.

The ball can be seen on a table in a super quick moment.

The inspired performer

If wardrobe choices are any indication, it's possible that one of Pixar's oldest characters,

Sid from the original Toy Story, may no longer be in the Land of the Living.

During the talent show, one performer took the stage with a familiar looking t-shirt.

Sure, the hair's different, and he's not making monsters out of toys, but only one guy in

Pixar's history was dark enough to wear that shirt.

Despite how sad it is that Sid's somehow ended up in the Mexican afterlife, being a skeleton-DJ's

got to be better than being a garbage man.

A legendary voice

John Ratzenberger, an actor best known for his long-running role on Cheers and his voiceover

work, has become a Pixar legend.

He's lent his pipes to a character in every one of the studio's films, including Hamm

the Piggy Bank in Toy Story, Mack the 18-Wheeler in Cars, and the Yeti in Monsters, Inc.

"Welcome to the Himalayas!"

As expected, Ratzenberger has a part in Coco, but it's so brief that it likely breezed right

by you.

Ratzenberger voices a goofy skeleton whose dentist is the one who remembers him in the

Land of the Living, thanks to his massive mouth of metal.

Pixar's personal ofrenda

Last but in no way least is a touching tribute to a few influential people who have sadly

passed away.

The Coco team included its very own ofrenda of sorts in the film's credits, with a series

of photographs honoring those who've had an impact on Pixar as a whole.

Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple who was also a CEO and shareholder of Pixar; Don Rickles,

famed insult comic and the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story movies; and Joe Ranft,

the voice actor behind Heimlich in A Bug's Life and Jacques in Finding Nemo.

Director Lee Unkrich confirmed Jobs and Rickles' inclusion to Metro in an interview:

"At the very end of the movie we kind of do a digital ofrenda, where we gave everyone

in the company the opportunity to submit a photograph of someone in their life who is

no longer with them but had been supportive of them.

And we just filled the screen with hundreds and hundreds of these beautiful images.

We included people in that group that we had lost from the Pixar family, people like Steve

Jobs and Don Rickles."

diabetes frequently asked in question part two five injecting with an insulin

pen before you inject make sure there is enough insulin in the cartridge for your

injection and check that the expiry date on the cartridge has not passed screw on

the needle before each injection make sure that your pen is giving insulin by

dialing one or two units and holding the pen upright press the plunger you should

see a drop of insulin on the needle tip after the plunger has pushed in leave

the needle in the skin for at least 10 seconds this will allow the last drops

of insulin to be completely injected after you have finished remove the tip

and put it in a needle disposing bin six how do i inject if your nurse has asked

you to inject using a skin fold do so by taking a clean fold of skin between your

thumb and index finger making sure that you only lift the skin and not the

muscle beneath quickly push the needle straight into the skin fold as far as

that will go and with your thumb on top of the plunger smoothly inject all the

insulin you must continue to hold the skin fold throughout all the injection

of the insulin when finished remove the needle slowly and only then release the

skin fold 7 where do I inject my insulin the best areas where to inject are

stomach upper arms thighs buttocks insulin is absorbed in different speeds

depending on where you inject so in order for your insulin to work the same

way from one day to the next always inject in the same area at the

same time ask your diabetes specialist nurse which injection areas are best for

you and write down the time of the day for each of them

how and why do I rotate my injection sites it is important that you don't

keep injecting your insulin in the same place change sides using for instance

your right thigh one day and your left thigh the following day and vice versa

each time you inject in a site make sure that you don't inject in the same place

as the last time move the location of the injection by about a fingers width

from the place you use the previous time there are site rotation guides available

to help you rotate your injections ask your nurse if you want to use them if

you always inject in the same place and to reuse your needles more than once

your sites may become red sore in lumpy this is what we call lipodystrophy or

lipo lipo scan develop anywhere on your body where you inject insulin injected

into a lipo may not work properly and it may affect your blood sugar level this

is why it's very important to always rotate your injection sites and change

your needle after each injection 9 will I always need insulin in your case you

have what is called type 1 diabetes this means that your body completely stops

making the insulin it needs to work properly an injecting insulin is the

only way to replace what your body no longer makes you may have heard about a

person having diabetes and taking pills but it's not same diabetes that's what

you eat or drink your blood sugar level rises when you inject insulin your blood

sugar level Falls if you exercise your blood sugar level falls even faster this

is why balancing the amount of insulin food and exercise are so important your

blood sugar level should not be allowed to go too high or too low by doing

regular blood sugar level tests your insulin dose can be adjusted to keep

your blood sugar level as healthy as possible

MICHELLE FURIOUS AFTER TRUMP RETURNS A POPULAR ITEM TO PUBLIC SCHOOL LUNCH ROOMS - Duration: 2:24.

MICHELLE FURIOUS AFTER TRUMP RETURNS A POPULAR ITEM TO PUBLIC SCHOOL LUNCH ROOMS

Under Michelle Obama, we saw some of the most extreme government meddling in our food systems.

While many liberals and moderates claimed that this was good for the children, conservatives

responded with anger, claiming that they were taking away our children's freedom of choice.

President Trump apparently agrees, however, because he's just brought back one of every

kid's favorite food choices and put it on the menu.

We're sorry to say it, Former First Lady Michelle Obama, but that chocolate milk you

didn't want kids having has now been given back to the people.

According to the Daily Wire:

Sorry, Former First Lady Michelle Obama, but that chocolate milk you banned from the National

School Lunch Program has been reinstated by the Trump administration.

"The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Thursday published a new interim rule, due to take

effect on July 1 after a period of public comment, which relaxes sodium limits and whole-grain

requirements on school lunches and also allows flavored milk with 1 percent back into school

cafeterias nationwide," reports ABC.

This means 1% chocolate milk can make it's way back to schoolchildren's lunch trays

by July.

"This is not reducing the nutritional standards whatsoever," said Agriculture Secretary

Sonny Perdue back in May, when the changes were introduced.

"I wouldn't be as big as I am today without flavored milk."

In a statement released on Thursday, Perdue said, "Schools need flexibility in menu

planning so they can serve nutritious and appealing meals.

Schools want to offer food that students actually want to eat.

It doesn't do any good to serve nutritious meals if they wind up in the trash can."

Mrs. Obama championed the Healthy and Hunger-Free Kids Act which passed in 2010 during her tenure

in the White House.

The flawed initiative intended to reduce obesity rates in children, ran into numerous problems

when implemented, namely wasted food (students were mandated to take one fruit or vegetable,

whether or not they actually planned to eat it) and pricey budgets.

Why the teenage brain has an evolutionary advantage - Duration: 4:16.

It's not easy being a teenager. There's the angst. The emotions. The raging

hormones! And although hormones do play a big role in puberty, the brain is going

through a lot of changes too. Neuroscientists are learning thatt some of

the most puzzling teenage behavior may actually have some real benefits.

legally, you're considered an adult when you turn18, but from the neuroscience perspective,

your brain is really still developing. "And the current literature suggests that

it's about around age 25 or so is when the brain finishes the period of

adolescence." This is Dr. Adriana Galván and she runs the developmental

neuroscience lab at UCLA. The brain develops from the back to the front, so

the prefrontal cortex is the last region to fully develop. "The prefrontal cortex

is the part of the brain you need to make good decisions, to think about the

future, think about consequences." You can kind of think of it like the Spock of

the brain: logical, calm and collected. And then deeper in the brain there are these

emotional systems, like the limbic system, that are more interested in immediate

gratification. They're sort of like Captain Kirk: a risk-taker and a bit

emotional. During the teenage years, the limbic system develops really quickly

and the prefrontal cortex is trying to catch up. Eventually as individuals

become adults, the prefrontal cortex will increasingly have more influence over

behavior than the impulsive part of the brain. So without a fully developed

prefrontal cortex, you can kind of see why teens might be more impulsive or

just worry less about future consequences. Another brain region that's

really active during adolescence is this thing called the striatum and it's a key

part of the brain's reward system. Let's say you find 20 bucks on the street or

someone gives you a cookie. The striatum goes off and it releases dopamine into

the brain. Adrianna's lab discovered that the

teenage brain is super sensitive to different rewards like sugar and money.

Way, way more than in the brains of adults and children. And all of this

activity in the brain's reward center, it may actually serve a purpose.

"We asked teenagers to come to the lab and we scanned their brains while they

performed a learning task. They were shown a picture of a butterfly and two

flowers and they were asked to guess which flower the butterfly would land on."

After each guess, they were given feedback. When the teens got it right,

their striatum would get really, really active. "They would learn over time that

the butterfly preferred one flower over the other — and everybody learned this,

but what we found is that the adolescents learned it more quickly than

adults and with greater accuracy." So having this reward center that's

hyperresponsive to feedback actually helps teenagers learn from their environment.

But this same region of the brain is also connected to risk-taking data from

Adriana's lab suggests that teens with a more reactive striatum are more likely

to engage in risky behavior and to enjoy it. "Rather than ask how you keep your

teenager from taking risks — because we know the brain is really oriented

towards risk during this time — it's better to ask, 'How do I provide

opportunities for healthy risks?'" Like trying out for the school play, even if

you've never acted before. Or asking someone out on a date.

Those are real risks to a teenager, but they're not the kind of risks that

parents typically worry about. "It makes sense from an evolutionary perspective

that there's a time in life when teens want to become more independent,

seek out new opportunities. In the animal world, this would translate into looking

for new food resources or foraging behavior and in teenagers it often

manifests as risk-taking behavior and simply moving away from a family unit."

Teenagers are gonna make mistakes, but they've got this brain that's

encouraging them to learn and explore and push boundaries. "So adolescence is a

really special time and I think we don't appreciate enough their energy and their

ability to lead and to motivate and how excitable they find life in a way that

we maybe — maybe we don't later in life." Our brains keep changing throughout our

lives and researchers at UC Berkeley are learning that if you give people a

little bit of power it can have a big effect on the brain.
