In the frigid autumn of 1940, hundreds of cargo ships travel across the Atlantic.

It's a desperate effort to keep Britain supplied in its war effort against Nazi

Germany. But they're being decimated by enemy ships and submarines. In 1940 alone,

Germany will sink over 1,000 Allied ships. Britain is at risk of being

starved of supplies. The Allies response is brutally simple. Find a way to build

thousands of cargo ships and build them faster than Germany can ever hope to

sink them. In just four years, America will construct over 2,700

Liberty class cargo ships and each will be built not in months, but mere weeks.

Some in a matter of days. These ugly and hastily built ships will be loaded to

the brim and sent overseas. And they're going to help the Allies win the war.

By late 1940, much of Europe had fallen to Nazi Germany and the British

Commonwealth now stood alone in its fight. But the island nation was being

starved of much-needed supplies for its war effort. German U-boats,warships and

aircraft were inflicting heavy losses to incoming shipping traffic, sinking ships

faster than Britain could replace them. The United States, although not yet at

war, was playing a vital role in supplying Britain in its war effort. And

its enormous industrial capacity was critical to helping Britain stay in the

fight. But with Germany sinking ships daily, Britain and America desperately

needed a way to keep all that war material moving. The problem was, in the

entire decade prior, America had only built a couple dozen ships. So at the

start of 1941, US President Franklin Roosevelt announces the emergency

shipbuilding program. It'll be an enormous effort to produce ships on an

unprecedented scale. But to do that, they'll need to build a special kind of

ship. Dreadful looking objects. That's how President Roosevelt described

Liberty ships when he first saw their design.

Time magazine nicknamed them ugly ducklings.They're not much to look at

and from a design standpoint there's also really nothing remarkable about

them. With 10,000 tons of cargo capacity, they are a large ship for the day, but

they're also obsolete. Their design is 60 years old. Based off a British ship built

in the 19th century, they're powered by an antiquated compound steam engine.

They're under powered. If the Atlantic seas are rough enough

and moving in the wrong direction, a Liberty might not be able to move

forward at all. Most liberties were given like defenses a 3-inch bow gun and a

four or five inch stern gun along with anti-aircraft weaponry. They were crewed by

45 volunteer Merchant Mariner and one or two dozen Navy armed guard. But in

reality, the heroic men who served aboard these ships were vulnerable and paid a

heavy price. But Liberty ships aren't remarkable for their capabilities out at sea.

The history they made was in how they were built. Their design

is deliberately basic. Because that's what's going to allow for thousands to

be built, with most being constructed in just a few weeks. Liberty ships

aren't expected to last. They're engineered lifespan is only five years.

But if a Liberty Ship can make just one single trip across the ocean with cargo,

well that's a success worth the two million dollar price tag. That's how

desperate the situation was. The task of constructing Liberty ships will be

assigned to 18 shipyards to spread across the coastal United States and

they'll soon be producing Liberty ships at an incredible rate. By 1943, these

shipyards will launch a new ship on average every eight hours. There's

two revolutionary changes in shipbuilding that'll make this enormous

feed possible. The first is welding. Up until this point, almost all ships were

built by riveting pieces together, a slow process requiring skill and physical

strength. but Liberty ships workforce would not be skilled. Most would be

plucked off farms and nearly a third would be women. Welding would drastically

speed up the assembly process. The second revolutionary step will bring assembly

line logic to the shipbuilding industry. Instead of building a ship from start to

finish, thousands of components will be

manufactured at the same time, at different locations and then brought to

the shipyard for final assembly. Where it used to take six months to construct a

Liberty sized ship, by 1944 it was taking on average only 42 days.

And shipyards would compete to see how fast they could build them. One yard

would finish a Liberty in a month and another would break this record, doing it

in just three weeks. Then in November of 1942, the Richmond shipyards in

California managed to build a Liberty in just four days and

fifteen hours. And then it broke in two. Okay, so not that particular Liberty ship,

but some early liberties did literally break in half. These ships were notorious

for developing serious structural cracks. You see, welding instead of riveting

meant that cracks could easily spread throughout the hall. Revolutionary

changes in shipbuilding meant there were some kinks to work out.

Out at sea, Liberty ships were vulnerable not because they lacked serious

defensive weaponry, but because they were slow. Convoys of Liberty ships numbering

50 or 60 would lumber along at just 10 miles per hour. At full emergency speed, a

Liberty Ship could push 13 miles per hour. Maybe. But a surfaced German U-boat

could do 20 miles per hour. And that made Liberty's easy prey, especially at night.

To improve the odds, Liberty ships were guarded by escorts. More vulnerable

liberties, those loaded with munitions or fuel, would travel at the center of the

formation. But serving on a Liberty was dangerous and stressful and hundreds

were sunk or critically damaged throughout the war. But by mid 1941, the

sheer number of Liberty's out at sea along with an increase in their armed

escorts, overwhelmed German forces. Advances in anti-submarine technologies

also started stamping out the U-boat threat. By mid 1944, the United States

began to focus on producing a new type of wartime cargo vessel: the Victory Ship,

which would never be produced on the scale that Liberty's were, but there were

larger and faster making them far less vulnerable.

After the war, many liberties were put into the reserve fleet or sold off to

post-war merchant cargo fleets. By the 1960s their ancient design made them far

too expensive to operate and most were sold off for scrap. Today only three

remaining liberties of 2,710 survived to remind us of their enormous contribution

to winning the Second World War.

Yesterday, GQ Magazine executives unveiled their pick for "Citizen of the Year, " and

of course, the left-leaning publication whose readership consists mostly of Beta males chose

Colin Kaepernick.

People across social media ripped into the magazine for picking such a controversial

person considering that there were so many others out there that were more worthy of

the award.

Now, just a day after Kaepernick was given this title he has received some bad news that

he could lose the award to someone much more deserving.

For over a year, the left has lauded Colin Kaepernick as some sort of "freedom fighter"

that is standing against racial injustice in America.

Somehow the irony is lost on these liberals in the mainstream media that Kaepernick is

a multi-millionaire who has not suffered an ounce of prejudice in his life.

At any rate, the left has propped Kaepernick up as their hero and parade him around despite

the fact that he has done nothing to improve race relations in the country.

Evidently, that is all the liberals need though to award someone with the title "Citizen

of the Year."

Thankfully, not everyone in the country agrees with Kaepernick being given this title considering

that there are many other people out there that deserve it.

One of those people that think this award given to Kaepernick is a sham is former ESPN

host Britt McHenry who took to Twitter to point out who she thinks deserves the award

more.

McHenry mentions the apparent person that should be celebrated, and I am sure the majority

of Americans would agree.

Then McHenry goes right to the crux of the issue and mentions the disgusting socks, communist

shirt, offensive statements he and his Muslim girlfriend have made designed to inflame the

masses.

However, the best part of McHenry's entire Twitter thread is when she educated all those

who say she doesn't understand the importance of Kaepernick's protest.

Britt McHenry is taking a stand against GQ naming Colin Kaepernick its "Citizen of

the Year" for taking a knee.

The former ESPN reporter bashed GQ and Kaepernick on Twitter Monday shortly after the magazine

announced it would be honoring the polarizing quarterback.

"Wear socks depicting police officers as pigs; wear Fidel Castro as a fashion statement

IN MIAMI; sue NFL for collusion when gf compares owners to slave owners…Win Citizen of the

Year.

Serve in the US military…nothing.

What a joke, GQ.

#Kaepernick," McHenry wrote.

McHenry has frequently criticized Kaepernick for initiating the national anthem protest

movement.

McHenry was one of 100 ESPN employees let go by the network in late April.

The recognizable sports reporter later said she believed her conservative views had something

to do with her firing.

Since being let go by ESPN, McHenry has frequently appeared as a guest on Fox News.

McHenry has also taken to Twitter to voice her conservative views.

In recent weeks McHenry has praised Donald Trump, insinuated Hillary Clinton "rigged"

the Democratic National Convention and criticized Spurs coach Gregg Popovich for discussing

politics in his interviews.

GQ said they decided to honor Kaepernick due to his activism both on and off the field.

"Colin Kaepernick's determined stand puts him in rare company in sports history: Muhammad

Ali, Jackie Robinson — athletes who risked everything to make a difference," the editors

of GQ wrote.

McHenry later said she does, in fact, understand the underlying reason behind the protests,

but believes players such as Malcolm Jenkins and Kenny Stills were more worthy choices.

"For those who think I don't get the reason for protest you're wrong," McHenry wrote.

"Eagles Malcolm Jenkins met with lawmakers to help community.

Dolphins Kenny Stills met with Miami police.

McHenry also said J.J.

Watt would have been a better choice for Citizen of the Year.

The Texans defensive end raised more than $37 million for Hurricane Harvey relief.

"JJ Watt raised $37 million for Hurricane Harvey victims.

But Kaepernick refused to stand for our national anthem (a year ago) and is Citizen of the

Year.

Right…," McHenry wrote.

If GQ Magazine truly desired to celebrate someone in America that was doing the right

thing, they should have given it to Houston Texans star J.J.

Watt, who raised more than $37 million to aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey in September.

Watts used his platform in the NFL to help people in his community with action but somehow

to the left that isn't the "good citizen" they are looking to applaud.

The left is only concerned with praising people in the media that are willing to tear America

apart and not unify it.

Kaepernick was chosen since he represents everything that they are and he is the perfect

person to manipulate, and he doesn't even see it.

It would be fantastic to see GQ Magazine remove this race-baiter from their cover and give

this award to someone who truly deserves it, but that won't happen until we the people

start pushing back even more.

It's a new week and now another shooting with multiple fatalities at the hands of a

deranged gunman.

After a terrorist attack in Manhattan, a random shooting in a Colorado Walmart, and a Texas

church massacre within the last 30 days, all starting with the biggest mass shooting in

modern history on October 1 in Las Vegas, the last six weeks have been the bloodiest

on record for America.

Now, a California elementary school can be added to this unfortunate list.

Initial reports are coming out now saying that 90-100 shots were fired, resulting in

three deaths so far at Rancho Tehama School in Rancho Tehama, California.

KRCTV reports:

Tehama County officials are responding to a reported shooting near a school in Rancho

Tehama, near Corning.

Officials said they were called around 8 a.m. Tuesday to a home near Rancho Tehama School

where a man was reportedly shot.

Officials said they are actively searching for the shooter.

Officials are telling residents in the Rancho Tehama area to stay inside their homes until

they are able to secure the situation.

Students at Rancho Tehama Elementary are being evacuated to the Rancho Tehama Recreation

Hall.

Parents can pick up their children there.

A witness named Tiffany, who operates Coffee Addiction Coffee Shop near the school, told

KRCR News Channel 7 she heard 90-100 shots fired.

She reported seeing a Honda drive by with the windows shot out.

She also saw at least five ambulances responding to the area.

Tiffany's husband, Brian Rodgers, said another witness reported seeing a white pickup drive

through the school gate and start shooting.

Authorities have not confirmed the number of victims.

Rancho Tehama is a community of about 3,500 northwest of Corning.

Adding to that information is another report just released by KCCI8 in Des Moines, Iowa:

A reported shooting in northern California has left at least three people dead.

The Tehama County Sheriff's Office says the shooting happened near an elementary school

in Rancho Tehama.

"Multiple students" have been airlifted from the scene.

A 6-year-old is reportedly among the injured.

Rancho Tehama Elementary is reportedly now in lockdown.

Local law enforcement have blocked off the road that leads to the school.

The area is under lockdown and roadblocks are preventing parents from getting to their

students trapped at the school.

"Parents are in distress stuck behind road block not knowing the status of their kids

at school in Rancho Tehama where the shooter ended up," Sara Stinson wrote on Twitter.

vengeance against a type of person they disagree with.

For some reason, liberals seem to perpetually ignore this fact and blame the weapon, not

the beliefs or affiliations of the person who pulled the trigger.

Americans, specifically Christians and children are under attack in these trying days prophesized

about in the Bible that we are seeing come to fruition under the most terrifying terms.

In September, white Tennessee churchgoers were ambushed and killed by a gunman in an

unprovoked attack that was swiftly swept under the rug by the mainstream media desperate

to hide the important details and keep the attention on irrelevant issues like Russian

collusion.

Now, the blood of 26 faithful believers is now on their hands after disregarding the

clear and present threat in this country to keep the focus on their rhetoric.

There's no hiding what's happening now and every American needs to be on high alert

for what's coming.

These are sad times we live in and we need to have the ability to defend ourselves, our

loved ones, and students from these unprovoked attacks.

With the number of schools that have now come under direct threat of ambush, it's time

to consider arming our teachers and providing armed security at our schools.

Hi, YouTube, it's Kathy, and welcome to some very dramatic lighting.

If you've been around for a while, you know that I only shoot with natural lighting from

this window, and because it's fall on the West Coast of Vancouver Island... yeah.

I've wanted to film all day, but it's been absolutely grey and I decided just to do it.

So I've been waiting to shoot this video for a while now, and having just recently returned

from Fan Expo Vancouver, I figured this was a really good time to do it.

And, of course, you've read the title, so you probably know I'm going to talk to you

about some books that have something to do with fandom.

I'm absolutely terrible at ranking books, so these are just the books I happen to own,

and that I've read, and that I love, and have something do do with fandom.

In fact, my ultimate goal is to share these seven with you, and then for you to tell me

your favourite books about fandom down in the comments below, and then after I've had a little

bit of time to read all of them, I want to do a Part Two of this in the New Year.

So if your favourite book isn't in this video, please let me know about it down below.

In no particular order, the first book is "Radio Silence" by Alice Oseman.

In fact, these books are ordered by size from smallest to largest because I had to do it

for the thumbnail.

I knew nothing about this book when I purchased it besides the cover is gorgeous, and I went,

"I will have that, please".

But I was delightfully surprised when it arrived and I started reading it because it not only

features a bisexual main character - it me! - it also has to do with a fandom of a very

strange podcast.

Again, if you've been around for a while, I really like Welcome to Night Vale, and it

turns out that Alice Oseman also does.

So the podcast in here is not Welcome to Night Vale; it is something much smaller in production,

but it plays a super big role in the protagonist's life.

To the point where she makes fan art about it.

In fact, the community loves her fan art so much that the creator of the podcast contacts

her and asks, "hey, do you want to do some art for the actual podcast?"

I don't want to go into too many specifics, but if you love podcasts, if you love fan

art, you will like this books.

There are also some other aspects of this I really, really enjoy, and I talked about

it when I did a wrap up of this book... ages ago.

If I figure out which wrap up it is, I will link it somewhere.

The next book on my stack is "Queens of Geek" by Jen Wilde.

I originally read this for the BookTubeAThon, and I read it on the first day, and I read

it all in one day, and it made me cry a few times.

It's so good.

So the blurb on the front of this book is "Three Friends.

Two Loves Stories. One Convention" and that sums it up pretty great.

You're following two point of view characters, Charlie and Taylor, and they have come from

Australia, all the way to the states to go to basically what is a giant Comic Con type of thing.

And they're there because Charlie is promoting the film that she's just been in, whereas

Taylor and their other friend Jamie are tagging along.

While Charlie's off doing all the things she needs to do for production reasons, Taylor

is there to meet her favourite author.

So obviously, Taylor's fangirling hard about this opportunity, and Charlie is fangirling

hard about a fellow YouTuber who is quite adorable, and she's always had a crush on,

who she just happens to meet.

There are so many different types of rep in this book that it just melted my heart.

There's bisexuality rep, there's neurodiversity rep, there's anxiety rep, there's immigrant parents rep.

Off the top of my head, I also think that there's mixed race rep, but I might be misremembering,

so don't quote me on that one.

All together, it's cute, it's adorable, and I'll be doing a Buddy Read Book Review of

it very, very shortly.

Speaking of books that I'll be doing a Buddy Read Book Review of shortly,

"Geekerella" by Ashley Poston.

As you might guess from this title, this is a geeky retelling of Cinderella.

In this, you have two point of view characters, as well.

Elle, who is the Cinderella type character, obviously.

And then you also have Darien, who is going to be playing the lead role in Elle's favourite

tv show [remake].

See, she used to watch this show called Starfield with her Dad, and absolutely loved it.

But now they're doing a movie remake, and she is not really down with Darien playing

the lead role.

He's one of those dudes that seems to be more popular for his abs than anything else, and

she does not see him with the acting chops of someone who can play the Commander.

You know, little does she or the world know that he is also a huge Starfield fan.

Again, cute, adorable, like the other two books, has some queer rep.

So look forward to me talking about that book on another channel very soon.

The next book that I picked up quite recently and absolutely adore is "Eliza and Her Monsters" by Francesca Zappia.

This has an interesting take on fandom in that the main character is the creator of

the fandom in question.

Eliza creates a web comic called Monstrous Sea, and it gets millions of views.

Her family is full of athletes and they just don't get it.

She publishes this anonymously and there's just a couple of her online friends that know her identity.

In her last year of high school, she runs into a new student who happens to be a Monstrous

Sea fan, and this is the first one she's even found in the wild because she doesn't really go out much.

She's got comics to draw.

So she's stuck in this weird place of "should I tell him?" and wanting to keep her anonymity.

There's also points throughout the book where you see these sketchers of her characters

from the web comic, and it's just great.

You get enough of the intricate plot line of that story to kind of understand whenever

anyone's making reference to it, and even though this is her life's work, it becomes

a giant pressure on her.

She's graduating soon.

Is she going to be able to do this for the rest of her life?

What is next in store for her?

And that's about all I can say without going into some spoilers that I really don't want to go into.

The next book on this list should be a staple in any fandom related book list, and that

is "Fangirl" by Rainbow Rowell.

I think I was a little late to this game.

I only picked this book up last year and read it pretty much in a day while I was on a

Books and Beer tour with my Mom.

It's been a little while since I read this, so I think I'm going to get all these details

correct, but let's see.

Cath, our protagonist, is a fanfiction writer, and she writes fanfiction for basically the

Harry Potter of this world.

It's not Harry Potter, but it's a magic-based book series where the last book is going to come out soon.

And she's an incredibly popular fanfiction writer.

She's got thousands of words on this subject.

But she wants to have her fanfiction done by the time the final book comes out.

That being said, she's a twin, and her and her twin are going off to university at this point.

And they've always been so close, but now they're living in two separate dorm rooms.

So Cath has some separation anxiety there.

This is also the point in her life where Levi comes in, a very cute romantic interest.

This book deals a lot with the validity of fanfiction writing and even though you are

borrowing other characters, you are creating a new piece of art.

And then, of course, if you love this, you can always go on to reading "Carry On" by

Rainbow Rowell, which is basically her [Cath's] fanfiction, and it's freakin' adorable.

And I read it over a weekend when I was at a convention in Seattle.

So yes.

The penultimate book in this stack might surprise some of you until you think about it a little

harder, and that's "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green.

Now, I know that when we think about this book, we think about this protagonist who

has cancer, and a love story between two people who have had cancer,

and, of course, the movie that came out.

But at the heart it, this is about fandom.

I mean, to be fair, things can be about several different things.

One of them for this book definitely is fandom.

Our protagonist, Hazel Grace, is forced into going to this group therapy type thing where

she meets a cute boy.

He is there for his friend Isaac who is soon going to be completely blind because of his

type of cancer, but Gus himself, the cute boy, is in remission.

Impulsively, Hazel takes his invitation to come back to his place to watch a movie.

They end up starting to talk about books and she ends up telling him about the book that

she is completely obsessed with.

If that fandom moment hadn't happened, none of the rest of the book would have.

It was because of that moment of opening herself up and letting another human know about her

intense fandom for this book that he read it, and literally everything else that happened

in the book happened.

It makes complete sense to me that this particular John Green book would be on this list.

And the final fandom book that I want to talk about that I pulled off my shelves today is

"You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost)" by Felicia Day.

Obviously, unlike the other, this is a nonfiction book.

And it is a memoir.

That being said, Felicia Day has been called Queen of the Geeks so many times.

Throughout her books, she talks about so many different types of fandom, so many fandoms

she's been interested in, and different times throughout her life where fandom has made an impact on her.

As a side note, while I was waiting for this book to come out, I was at VidCon for the

very first time, and I was wearing my Codex cosplay, and Hank Green thanked me for wearing

cosplay at his convention and asked if he could take a picture of me to send to Felicia

via text message, which of course I said yes to.

So if you are interested in the intersection of fandom and the internet, this is definitely

a book that you should check out, if you haven't already.

And while I'm here, I might as well also make a music recommendation for you, because I'm

wearing their t-shirt right now, and it makes me very happy.

I don't have a viewfinder on this potato of a camera, so I have no idea how much of this

tshirt you can see, but it says "There are no Fake Geeks, only Real Jerks" and this is
