- [Jon] Go head, man, go head.
- [Barrett] Nah, I'm good buddy.
- [Jon] Go head, go head, go head, man.
- [Barrett] My mom always told me.
- [Jon] Alright, well come on in.
Come on in, here we go.
We can sort it out.
- [Buddy] Uh, where do you keep your pliers?
- [Jon] Ho, ho, ho, ho, whoa, whoa!
- [Barrett] Down on the ground, down on the ground!
- [Jon] Back up, back up, back up, back up!
(rapid gunshots)
- [Assailant] Stay down!
(rapid gunshots)
(intense music)
- [Narrator] Welcome to First Person Defender
(intense music)
Where regular people come face to face
with unknown attackers in real world scenarios
and fight their way out.
(rapid gunshots)
This is First Person Defender.
Jon works in the firearms industry
and over the last couple of years,
he's committed himself
to getting serious self-defense training.
Today he'll find out if that pays off.
This force on force training uses real firearms
converted to fire marking cartridges.
The crew wears yellow shirts
and are considered to be invisible to role players.
This scenario has Jon on his back deck with a friend.
A nearby creek is popular with fishermen and walkers.
So it's common to see people there,
and to engage them in conversations.
- [Jon] You're alright?
- [Barrett] Yeah I gotta hook stuck in my chest.
- [Jon] Yeah?
- [Barrett] Y'all have anything
y'all can help me with on it?
- [Jon] Yeah I do.
- [Buddy] What's up?
- [Barrett] I hooked myself in the chest.
Can you help me with that?
Y'all have pliers or somethin?
- [Buddy] Yeah, let's go get some pliers.
- [Jon] What's up, guys!
- [Buddy] We can go in the house.
- [Jon] Just a fishing accident.
- [Barrett] Yeah let's go in the house, man.
- [Buddy] Dang dude, that's in there.
Yeah, yeah, we'll get you set up.
- [Jon] You alright?
- [Barrett] I can't believe I hooked myself.
- [Jon] Man, I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago.
- [Barrett] You caught a big one.
(laughter)
- [Barrett] Let's go get some pliers, we got some pliers.
- [Jon] Go head man, go head.
- [Barrett] Nah I'm good buddy.
- [Jon] Go head, go head, go head, man.
- [Barrett] My mom always told me to let y'all go first.
(gunshots)
- [Barrett] Down on the ground!
Get on the ground!
Get on the ground!
(rock music)
(gun shot)
- [Jon] Hey, you okay, you okay?
Hey, come on.
Hey, you okay?
Can you hear me?
Come on, come on.
Are you okay?
Hey, you okay?
9-1-1, 9-1-1.
(mellow techno music)
- Well?
- That didn't work out so well.
(laughs)
- Well why not?
What happened?
- Everything.
First off, got surprised by a threat.
Somebody come on, so got surprised by a threat.
Secondly, there's a gun right in your threat
so you go back and forth
from get a gun, get cover, get safe.
So that's when, I tried to back up, tried to go.
And I couldn't find cover,
couldn't see anything that was really close.
So I just said, let's go a gun, let's go hot.
And that took a little while. (chuckles)
I found my shirt, I found this,
I found myself sitting in a chair.
I found myself getting shot.
And all I could think of
is gotta keep fighting and get through it, so.
- Did you get hit?
- I did get hit.
I believe I got hit right here in the back.
- [Chris] Okay, yeah you did get one in the back.
- I went over here, finally got my gun goin'.
Got a good shot off.
I'm not sure if I hit him or not.
I think I got a good shot off
He exit the door.
So then that's when I said, hey go back to the buddy.
Buddy's not responsive,
but I don't know if he's coming back in.
Get me, the buddy into cover,
hold a stance and get on the phone as soon as possible.
(laughs)
- You did a really good job
and I'm gonna tell you right now
that when I look at that doorway.
And I did see, that's when I backed up
'cause I saw you start aiming this way
and the bad guy was going out and I do not see.
I didn't get hit.
And I don't see any marks on that wall or that wall outside
so I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't get a piece
of that bad guy on the way out.
You fought through malfunctions,
you fought through an ambush, close-quarters fighting.
You tripped over a bunch of stuff
that you're not familiar with and you kept on going.
(rock music)
- Generally if somebody tells you
to just shoot 'em in the leg, it's a stupid idea.
But there could be cases where that's all you got.
What we're working with today, is the Ruger LCRx.
This is the three-inch model, nice little home defense gun.
And we've got it in the Liberty Safe HDX-250
to keep it away from anybody you want to keep it away from.
You open up the safe 'cause you hear a bump in the night.
You grab your gun.
You may go down under the bed
and if the bad guy is shooting at you.
(gun shot, metallic chime)
(gun shots)
(metallic chime)
So practice this.
The leg may be all you have.
(gun shot, metallic chime)
- Alright so, couple of factors came in
to play here with this scenario.
One, is you're a really nice guy.
You're just like every good American out there.
You wanna help.
So that ultimately got you in a pickle,
which got you in close.
The first inclination, when he said,
"No, no, no, you go first."
That was probably when you should have said,
I'll tell you what, buddy, why don't you just stay out here
and I'll come back with some pliers
or a first aid kit or whatever.
There's a couple of things that have to happen,
one is, I have to get off the attack line.
I've gotta get away from that muzzle.
So as it's swinging out, as it's coming up to me,
I have to get out of the way, but I also have to control it.
Because if all I do is just, fit the gun on.
If I just smack it, who's, what's? (chuckles)
- It's right back at you.
- He points it right back at me.
But as I turn, I see that gun.
I just grab it and I get it out of the way.
I'm not in a really great combat stance now
but, Barrett, point the gun back at me.
(muffled chuckle)
He can't move the gun back at me.
But if you took a step back and pointed it at me.
He could do that.
So I gotta stay with the guy.
I've gotta really stay with him if I do this.
So I turn, I look, I oh geez, oh man!
So I get out of the attack line, I control the gun,
and I'm really trying hard not to break his fingers.
'Cause if he's got his fingers in the trigger
it's quite possible that I can damage his fingers,
the gun can go off.
But while I'm controlling him and driving him in
that's when my gun comes out
and I'm gonna try to put rounds in his thighs and that area.
I don't wanna shoot myself in the hand
so you gotta be really cautious.
Show me the expression on your face
when you turned around and noticed he was presenting a gun.
(laughter)
- Oh smack!
Not good, not good - So now we hook that thing
get out of the line of the muzzle, drive it into him.
(gunshots)
That is really awesome.
How does that make you feel?
- Makes me feel more confident.
Still don't look the situation, having guns pointed at me
but I feel a lot more confident
like I got some things to work.
- [Narrator] First Person Defender brought to you by,
Elite Survival Systems
Smith and Wesson
Gun Dealio
Simunition
And Springfield Armory
(gunshots)
- So Jon's sittin' in his backyard
havin' a lovely lunch with a buddy of his
and a would-be fisherman has a medical emergency
and approaches 'em.
As they go in the house, little does he know,
he's there to rob him.
Now, a couple of things.
Barrett comes out with his gun,
he actually has it back in a retention position
and Jon tries to grab his left hand to fight him.
Wrong thing to do.
Then Jon also tries to get to his gun
once he creates enough space again.
Reaction is never gonna beat action.
And in a lot of times in these scenu-suations,
the best thing to do is not go to guns,
do not let the bad guy know that you have a gun.
Hey, you're not gonna get any problem from us man.
Take whatever you want.
Let 'em have it.
Material items are replaceable.
Alright, let him go through the house.
Build a tactical advantage.
When his attention is diverted,
going through your wife's jewelry box
then you can get your gun out, prap, prap, prap
and do what you need to do if this situation calls for that.
But, when it is time to go to guns,
we want to make sure we do it efficiently.
And if you noticed, when Jon drew his pistol
he got hung up in his tee shirt.
When you're drawing from concealment
you have to make sure that you effectively
and sufficiently clear your cover garment
from your pistol before you draw.
Nice and slowly, draw that cover garment up,
pistol out as I'm getting it on target.
Bang, bang, bang. (gun fires)
(rock music)
Follow through, do what I need to do.
Make sure you clear that cover garment fully,
before pulling your pistol out.
(gun shot)
(rock music)
- Acceptable accuracy, what are we talking about?
We're not talkin' about the gun, the gun is very accurate.
This is a Smith and Wesson Shield, real popular carry gun
and it's very accurate.
But how fast can you shoot
and keep all the rounds on target?
We're not trying to win a bull's eye competition here.
We're trying to win a fight.
So let's see this.
(gunshots)
Shootin' pretty quick for me.
Keepin' all the rounds on target.
It's gonna be different for every person
but practice what your personal acceptable accuracy is,
how fast can you shoot,
keepin' all of those rounds still on the target.
- [Narrator] Jon did a great job in the first scenario.
To test him further, this setup looks pretty much the same
but the challenge will be different.
- [Buddy] Man, there have been a lot
of big fish pulled out of here.
- [Jon] Really?
What kind of fish you gettin' out of there?
- [Barrett] Hey guys!
- [Jon] Sup man?
- [Barrett] Hey man I just got a lure stuck in me.
- [Buddy] Oh my gosh.
- [Barrett] Y'all don't have anything like first kit
or pliers or somethin,' do ya?
- [Buddy] Uh, yeah.
- [Jon] Hey you want to go get that medical kit?
I gotta a medical kit right in the house.
- [Buddy] Well I can hang on with him.
You go get it.
- [Jon] You sure?
- [Buddy] Yeah, that'll work, that'll work, okay man.
Just stay out there man, it'll be cool.
- [Barrett] Yeah man, I got it stuck on me.
I can't believe that.
- [Buddy] Man, here.
Man I guess.
Yeah, I mean.
- [Barrett] Hey man.
- [Buddy] Whoa, no, no, no, no.
- [Barrett] Hey, hey, we're just gonna go in the house.
I don't want to hurt y'all man.
I just need to get some stuff.
- [Buddy] Jon!
- [Barrett] That's gonna be it, I'm gonna get your stuff.
- [Buddy] Jon.
- [Barrett] We'll go in the house
and that's gonna be it, man.
- [Jon] Hey, hey, hey man, hell you doing.
Whoa, whoa!
- [Barrett] Hey, look guys I don't want to hurt y'all.
That's it, we're gonna go in the house,
we're gonna get some things.
I'll grab your stuff man and I'll be outta here okay.
- [Jon] Let's go.
- [Barrett] Let's go,
let's start goin' towards the house man.
- [Jon] Aight.
- [Buddy] Oh Jesus.
- [Jon] You okay man?
- [Buddy] Yeah, dude just.
- [Jon] Come on.
(rapid gunshots)
- [Barrett] Oh, oh!
- [Jon] Let's go inside the house, inside the house.
(groans)
Inside the house, get inside the house.
9-1-1, 9-1-1.
(mellow techno music)
- Tell me about it.
That's all I can say, tell me about it.
- Well, I went inside and to get the medical kit.
Saying hey, let's list him out here.
I come back and he's got a gun on my buddy.
And so in the end, I know I went in for a medical kit.
And I'm thinkin' that's my buddy
so this has to be a bad guy in a bad situation.
He's got a gun out, walkin' my buddy up.
So when he says, I heard, get in the house.
And we're gonna walk in the house.
My buddy's got his arms up.
I didn't know if he's gonna walk in, walk out or what.
So I drew to hide, not knowing what was going to happen.
Maybe I'll fight, maybe we don't.
But when he kept sayin', we're now gonna go in the house.
He's got a gun on us, I figured, I'm not gettin' shot today.
- I hardly notice you draw the gun.
You dropped the medical bag, you didn't set it down.
You dropped it, you went right to two handed shooting
and you ground 'em into the ground.
- It was good, I was glad I didn't get shot.
- (laughs) It was great.
- I didn't get shot and just decided it was,
he had a gun and we're going inside
and didn't want to go inside.
- Very good, very good choices.
- And this time, I felt like I had an opportunity
to get it out, so that was my first step.
Cause I felt like he's not yellin.
He wants to go in the house so there's some time
before he's ready for his next step.
So that's why I thought, I only got this little time
to get it out, turn.
- There's probably a lot of people, I'd venture to say
that the moment they walked into that,
would have gone right to guns.
And I can't say that I wouldn't have.
And I have to give you extreme,
props on the fact that you didn't just get surprised
and go right to guns.
You said, whoa, whoa, let's talk this through.
You created time for yourself
to react in a more appropriate fashion
and that was, man people can learn a lot from this one.
This is really good.
(energetic music)
