Hi everyone. Today, because of the terrorist attack on Tuesday in New York,
we're doing a different kind of episode.
We're here almost right next to where it happened,
you can see some police, some patrol cars behind us,
and also the World Trade Center. Maybe by Friday there will be some new facts,
but we'll talk about what we know today.
Eight people died, many more injured, and it all happened in a touristy area.
What happened? The truck entered in a bicycle lane, and we're next to it now.
There's someone passing by right now on a Citibike, which are those public bicycles
that you also have in São Paulo, in Rio, maybe in other cities.
Patricia, where were you when found out, how did you feel?
I was at home, and it was actually my aunt that sent me a message from Brazil.
She asked if everything was all right, and I was like "Why, what happened?" and I turned on CNN to find out.
-So I saw it was downtown. -Did you mark yourself safe on Facebook?
No, I told my family.
When it happened I started to get messages from Brazilians wanting to know what is happening in NY.
So I want to talk a little bit about terrorism, and for those thinking about coming to New York,
of for those who already have plans, we'll talk about
is it safe, is it not safe.
So first, terrorism. Do you feel safe here in New York?
Yes, I feel safe. Like it or not, lots of other things happen, a lot of other people are killed,
and it was very few people who died, not to minimize it, but
the fact that eight people died is obviously horrible, but you can look at it in a positive way,
which is that it was not a larger attack. I lived here in 2001 when about 3,000 people died,
That is something very different, once again, not to minimize it, but in New York,
we haven't had any big attacks since then.
And in part I think that's because the city is safe.
And the police is now much more prepared after that attack.
It's worth noting that the attack yesterday, as far as we know, was carried out by one person,
and an amateur. He didn't even have real guns.
I think we can see that in a positive way, that a big attack, an organized attack, is more likely to be detected
by the police and the FBI. Not always, of course, but they're working hard on it.
It's also important to note that the people who died were tourists, at least six of the eight.
There were five Argentines and one Belgian. And in a touristy spot.
So should a tourist be afraid to walk around tourist areas of New York?
No, right? I think that was more or less a coincidence that it was tourists, you don't think so?
You're right, it's a coincidence up to a certain point. But it happened during the day, when most NYers are at work.
That's fair.
But it's important to know that touristy places...
Look at that, normally that means it's an important official, when they're in a black car.
But it's important to think as well that touristy places are more crowded.
That's also probably why he made that choice, in one of the more bustling areas.
Right? Because a terrorist attack has as its objective to kill the largest amount of people
in the shortest time.
Let's talk a little about that, because many people die in accidents every year, I wrote it down.
In car accidents last year, in 2016, 229 people died. That includes 144 pedestrians.
And eighteen cyclists - in New York.
How is terrorism different?
I think it is, because the objective is to cause panic and terror, because it's not an accident.
You're not talking about an accident, it was planned.
The objective of terrorism is terror, it's in the name. They want it to be as big as possible.
So you should think about the scale of the attack, and how many people live in New York,
and how many tourists, millions of tourists per year, visit.
And the vast majority are safe.
You also have to think about where you live. Do you live in a place that's safer than New York?
For many Brazilians, that's not the case.
-Even now, New York is much safer -than it was in the '90s.
And also compared to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and other capitals.
-And any city can be... -The target of an attack.
It happened in Paris, Istanbul...
But not in Brazil, everybody likes us.
Right. A terrorist attack, why does it happen?
It usually happens to Western powers, who get involved in the politics of the Middle East,
-And to a certain extent that's the purpose. -Fighting over oil
And also over religion. And these people see the power of the West, of the U.S. and the European Union,
And it's the only way they have of attacking.
But in this case, it wasn't an ISIS attack.
The guy wrote a note, but at this point we think he did it alone.
It's interesting that to me, people who do that, they're not really connected to organized terrorism
in other countries.
But today, ok, here's my commentary: These days, with the internet, you do that remotely,
you do it via chat, you could be on the other side of the planet and if you want to be a part of something
you do it without necessarily being a part of the organization.
We don't know yet if he was in touch with people in other countries, but I think that in many cases, these are
young people, who have problems in life...
and they need a purpose.
They find it attractive, I don't know, to create their own violent act for some reason.
What do you consider a terrorist attack?
If someone goes into a school and kills a lot of people,
-is that a terrorist attack? -I think the definition of a terrorist attack would be
an attack in which...you attack other people, or members of a group, to terrorize the whole group.
In this case, they randomly attacked people on the streets of New York, and it was an attack
against New York and the U.S.
I'm under the impression that in the U.S., the American people tends to define something a terrorist attack
only when it's committed by someone from the Middle East.
When you're Arab. Not when you're white and you kill a lot of people.
You're white and you kill a lot of blacks, in that case you're mentally ill.
And, let's talk about that.
It's a debate here. I think that many people think about think about Arabs when they think of terrorism.
To me, it has nothing to do with it. It's when you are trying to cause terror.
For example, the people on the extreme right, or it could be the left or whatever, who do things for
political purposes within the U.S., of course that's terrorism.
But the fact of somebody being Muslim - we think he's Muslim, gives it a different political aspect.
What will Trump say now, for example?
Some bullshit.
-Sorry, can I say that? -Of course.
He thinks that when someone comes to the United States, we have to vet the person deeply
before letting that person in. But it's interesting, because his effort to ban people from certain countries
wouldn't have worked in this case. Because the guy is from Uzbekistan.
-And Uzbekistan isn't part of the... -No it isn't on the list.
So Trump wanted to ban everyone from those countries, or most people.
But banning people just creates more hate.
And anger, and anger at Trump.
Right, so first, it wouldn't have helped in this case. Second, it probably would have increased the incentive
for terrorist acts. But let's see what he says.
The truth is that if it were even possible or reasonable to ban Muslims,
it wouldn't work because many terrorists are American non-Muslims.
So the effort of banning, of shutting off the country I don't find it correct.
And banning a religious group, let's face it, it's Nazism.
-And that's not a joke. I'm Jewish and we compare this... -Banning of a religious group
because it seems a lot like what happened in New York in the '30s.
-In New York? -In NY, in the United States.
In the 30s, there was a lot of prejudice against Jews, it was very difficult for Jews to enter the U.S.
And let's imagine that we tried to ban people from violent places. Brazil will practically be the
first country to be banned.
It's one of the most violent countries in the world.
And that would obviously be ridiculous.
At this moment in the world, there's a wave of attacks happening, in many countries.
In Europe, in the US, the West. But then what, you're going to stop traveling? You're going to stop seeing
places? Do what you do at home. I'm from São Paulo and you walk around, you have to know where you are,
you have to look around you, and that works in any place in the world.
It doesn't matter if it's Sweden, or in Antarctica where there aren't even people!
Understand? You have to be a cautious person and pay attention.
I'm writing a book about tourism, and I've studied the risks of being a tourist.
And the majority of tourist deaths, happen in automobiles.
In car accidents, or on buses.
Here in New York, everyone goes around in taxis and Ubers without putting on their seatbelt.
So, a tip: if you were to do one thing to protect yourself in New York,
when you take a taxi or an Uber, use a seatbelt.
