Social protection is a human right but how many benefit? - Duration: 2:59.
Social protection is a human right
and key to achieving sustainable development.
The ILO's World Social Protection Report 2017-19
provides recent data on social protection systems,
from child and family benefits,
to benefits in case of unemployment,
sickness, employment injury,
maternity, disability and old-age pensions.
These new global, regional and national estimates allow
the monitoring of progress towards achieving
the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals,
in particular, SDG 1.3.
It reflects the joint commitment of countries
to implement nationally appropriate social protection systems
for all, including floors.
Today, less than half of the global population
is effectively covered by at least one social protection benefit.
But if we consider all the areas of social protection,
as much as 71 per cent of the global population
is not adequately protected at all.
Worldwide, only one in five unemployed workers
receives unemployment benefits.
Only 35 per cent of children worldwide
enjoy effective access to social protection
and almost 1.3 billion are not covered at all.
Only 41 per cent of mothers with new-borns receive a maternity benefit.
And 68 per cent of older women and men receive a pension.
However, an important proportion of older persons,
particularly in low-income countries,
is still left unprotected.
In many parts of the world,
the right to health is not yet a reality,
especially in rural areas
where 56 per cent of the population lacks health coverage,
as compared to 22 per cent in urban areas.
More efforts are needed to extend coverage in many countries.
In particular,
it is important that austerity or fiscal reforms
not undermine long-term development efforts.
A significant number of developing countries
have successfully achieved universal social protection schemes in recent years
– other countries can follow.
Achieving universal social protection is possible.
It is up to us to make it reality.

Kandidiyaz Nedir? - Duration: 3:58.
Kandidiyaz Nedir?

Visiting Dragon Lake Studio - Duration: 9:09.
Please get in. I'll follow you.
I'm getting into the studio.
I started Youtube with this.
plus the tripod you can get in Daiso
This was the first setting for me
And then I got this camera after a while
I was so happy
But the most unforgettable thing,
That's when I was doing with this without any help from others
It crashed when it's too cold
Do you know how is it to meet up with other Youtubers?
It's like meeting a human being on the moon
They understand you and know what you mean
and you can't really find that kinda person easily
That's a cafe near my home, the white one.
An awesome one.
But then we got a new one here.
This, too, looks pretty cool from outside.
It didn't open yet, and I don't know what that is for.
They said it's an restaurant.
There are two women inside.
Sunny & Jinny.
I'm sure one is Sunny and another is Jinny.
I'm meeting up with another Youtuber today.
I'm on the way, and you might or might not know him.
It's great to meet up with another human being.
Too crowded.
I came too early, so I'm waiting for him.
I think I've never been here.
It looks so new.
Please get in first.
I'll follow you.
*We met up an hour earlier than this footage*
*We talked about this and that in a cafe*
*And I came up to look around his studio*
I'll go use the washroom.
I don't have such studio you know
so it feels so new
Yeah, I like this one.
It feels different.
You look slimmer, right?
It's that camera, right?
Hi all creative creators!
I'm Mickey Seo and I'm traveling Dragon Lake Studio today
Nice to meet you
I'm shy
I've never done a collaboration
My first time
but it's not that we talked about what to film today
Why don't you recommend a camera for me?
Camera?
You don't really do color-grading
and rather like to film practically
so take a look
Didn't you review this?
This is the one I reviewed.
AX700
and this is AX40
but I'd also like to have an DSLR
But DSLR...
it's better when you're doing something artistic
It'll cost a lot
You need to buy lens
If I change the camera, the weight of this will...
It's not heavy right now.
Daiso tripod + camera
They're not heavy at all
if I change it
This is a weapon
You're shaking your hand
It's like that on the first time
It gets harder
oh yeah
How much do you think it is?
This?
You got it in Daiso?
Yeah
Nah you already know it then
2,000 won?
Ahh don't underestimate it
5,000 won?
3,000 won
What do those pins mean?
Places I've been to film videos.
Any other places you'd like to go?
Maybe Iceland?
and North Europe
For me, it's Nepal
Nepal?
You must like hiking
Yeah I've already made some hiking videos
I once made about 7 videos back in Seattle
*This was my favorite episode*
but that was the biggest failure
Oh, why?
I didn't think it's good enough to share
never said this before
Oh I see
but I learned a lot
'cuz I didn't have any plans
For sure
nobody wants to watch things like...
"Hi guys I'm drinking coffee today~"
unless you have a good story
As I'm doing lectures, I often collect various data
Lectures!
so sometimes I like teaching too much
but your tutoring is very effective
It's like it comes out without thinking
Yeah, right
It's bad when dating
You're almost an expert with lots of knowledge, right?
Your major isn't filming, so how did you...
To show a bit of my story,
this is a book that I wrote
You wrote this book?
Yeah, I wrote it.
This is the coolest profile pic that you can find in any kinds of textbooks
so this is then book I...
But what does it have to do with...?
so when I'm really into one thing,
even when I don't know about it, I dig it and write a book.
It's important to be like Otaku to make an improvement
Yeah, I think being an expert doesn't necessarily mean a degree.
When did you exactly start it?
My first one was Dec, 2015.
*Snoop Dogg dissing Dok2 (not intended)*
I'm a fan of Dok2 you know...
You must have hated me?
I think rappers didn't really care
but young kids didn't really like me
Elementary school kids?
When was your first video in this channel?
Feb, this year.
Feb, this year?
and how many subscribers did you get?
It's around 46k...
Don't you think it was too fast?
Not not really
There're many people who grow up faster
Many people might think you're simply an IT reviewer
I don't review all tech products
Yeah
I do only what can be helpful to creators.
'cuz this channel for creators
Let's say I got a new watch and it's a brand new IT product
I wouldn't review it
but if it's used for creating,
then I could review it
so I'm not simply a reviewer,
but a Youtuber who would like to help people who create
Thanks for that, as a creator.
Please keep it up!
You're sweating
Oh did I?
Oh it's fine
I think he was nervous after meeting me
His ears are red
This often happens
That's not proper
Who do you think is older?
Let us know
It's a clear weather
so I met up with a Youtuber called Dragon Lake, and had a nice talk
he even bought me a dinner box
Thank you
It messed up on the way here
So what did I feel after meeting up with another Youtuber?
It was awkward
Dragon Lake is really good at talking and makes people feel comfortable
so it's great to meet him and have a talk
but it's just that I'm shy when it's the first time I meet someone
When it's the first
The first time I meet someone
And the studio, I didn't really think about that.
When I show my camera to my friends,
they all feel very awkward
I didn't know what that was like
but when I was in another studio looking at different cameras,
it was...
but it was great
Now it's getting okay. It was too red.
Yeah, it was a great experience to see another Youtuber today.
Good inspiration.
And haven't seen me for a while, right?
I think you almost forgot me.
Mickey Seo.
I should bring Mandy then.
I'll be back with another video, so see you then.
*Thank you Dragon Lake, for spending great time with me who is only a beginner level creator, and appreciate the dinner box*

Ep 53 - Germany (part 2) - Around Europe on a Motorcycle - Honda Transalp 700 - Duration: 12:17.
Good evening!
I am at the BMW Motorrad days 2017 meeting, in Germany.
One of the biggest motorcycle meeting that takes place in Europe and in the world!
Tomorrow are going to be about 20.000 bikes around this area!
So I thought I should bring a motorcycle that has really travelled to show these guys how it is!
I can already see a lot of bikes from all around the world over here!
Switzerland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Poland.... What else....France, UK...
it's considered to be the biggest meeting that is being organised by BMW in the whole world!
I can't wait to see whats going to happen in the town tomorrow after 20000 bikes will arrive here.
Good morning!
...Bavaria.... At Chiemsee lake today...
and the plans says that I am going to spent around 4-5 days in Bavaria region.
The mad king Ludwig build a place and a monastery on this lake..
The palace is one of the few buildings he started that actually came close to finish it.
This guy was building monasteries, castles and Palaces all around Bavaria but he would never finish them.
He destroyed the economy of Bavaria just to fullfill his sickness of building huge palaces.
But at the end the people of Bavaria was able to move on since he got drowned...
...and I think it was in this lake that he got drowned.
Good morning, good morning!
I am in Munchen, Germany!
Right behind me is the town hall!
A good mayor of Munchen is required to to ONLY ONE thing right and this is the opening of Octoberfest!
Seriously nobody gives a $h!t if he doesn't do anything else. Ocotoberfest is the most important thing.
Octoberfest is taking place every year at September.... ...because the weather is better.
I just visited the first church that was build in the city.
inside the church there are a lot of ossuaries full with bones....
but there is one which is very big and made with glass that has the full skeleton of a saint....
who was decorated from top to bottom with expensive stones and jewellery...
even in the eyeholes they fitted some jewels....
And this particular saint is the protector of all women that didn't got married....
.. that "stayed on the shelf"
So believers go and pray in front of a pile of decorated bones.....
So in other words, when died alone and then they put her in the church as a Saint.....
I am at Dahau concentration camp just a few kilometres Northeast of Munchen.
During the WW2, there where more than 200.000 prisoners in this camp, of which 43.000 died tragically.
Either they were executed, or died due to starvation sicknesses, or exhaustion.
You can visit the place for free of course. There is a guide if you prefer that costs only €3, but it's
twice per day and i didn't catch him..
(ALL memorials of WW2 are free to visit because they are not touristic attractions)
The most common torture by the SS was to leave the prisoners in the "Attention" position for long hours...
During the last years of the camp that was the first thing to do to all the new arrivals...
This way they, who ever was weak, and exhausted was falling down, and off course nobody was allowed to help
since it was forbidden from the SS. And many people were just left to die on the ground.
The old crematorium was build on 1940 and during its first year it was working non stop...
...so it was decided to build more of them.
Only at the old crematorium burned around 11.000 dead bodies
I am 30km away from Munchen, next to a small town called Glonn, in a small village called Haslach
Sebastian and Barbara invited me here, which I met while I was travelling in the Black forest.
Sebastian made a very nice and beautiful farm here. He is a farmer...
I am staying in this small wagon, I also have some goats here, that are afraid of me...
This small wagon is amazingly cozy and handy!
I have water here and I even have electricity...
Thanks a lot Barbara and Sebastian for the hospitality!
I really had a great time with you.
Tomorrow I am going to leave Bavaria, to Bonn, Cologne, Dusseldorf.
Make sure you are subscribed to the channel to get all the notifications.

The Earth is flat ?! The moon is a hologram ?! - Duration: 2:42.
Only a little bit the supporters of the "flat Earth" calmed down with their pseudo-scientific theory, as a new craze exploded the Internet The reason was the video of the Moon shot by an American user, which shows how a certain "wave" runs across the entire surface of the Moon. Many American "ufologists" immediately assumed that this is a glitch of the holographic projector, which projects the image of the moon in order to mislead the earthlings ...

8x6 Workshop Vlog 2017-11 ► Boxes, Salvage Hunt, Stanley's Antics, Workshop Snacks - Duration: 33:02.
it's the workshop vlog coming up more presentation boxes I go on the scrounge
the small makers group it's Lego me
stand these up to his antics the sticker wall and workshop snacking hello and
welcome to this edition sorry about the longer than normal gap between vlogs
life does get in the way so this vlog is going to be a little longer than normal
if you want to skip anything you're not interested in there is a timetable in
the description below I have been inundated with requests for the
presentation box after the pen box in the last edition I didn't think there
would have been so much interest but as a lot of you of us for it here is the
tutorial these boxes have a square base and can be made with any width to height
ratio you require and they're quite strong and sturdy when made from a
hundred and sixty gram card the design is attributed to the origami artist
Tomoko Foose a and a design similar to this appears in one of her books simple
origami boxes because of the logical structure and simple technique it's
quite possible this method may have been discovered by others I've been making
these boxes myself for years so if we want to calculate the size of the box
this is how we do it with a rectangle of paper
I need the width of the paper to be twice the width over the base of the box
and the height of the paper needs to be the width of the box plus
the height of the box plus the height of the box so we need
four pieces for the base of the box I'm using two different colors pure blue and
a pale green so let's get started the first fold is straight in half along the
longest way and it is very important to have extremely sharp creases so I'm
using my technical device again called a stick just to make sure those creases
are ultra ultra sharp open out the paper and the first fold is always in the
bottom right hand side right hand corner when the crease is vertical and this
bottom right hand corner will fold up so it runs right along the crease that
you've just made do take your time to get this right
if you want you can stand one side of the paper up to form a little crease
there and then press that down
so it's always that bottom right-hand corner the top of the pepper now will
fold down it's always easier to fold away from you rather than towards you so
I've just swiveled the paper around and I'm folding the top of the paper down
but not right to the triangle I'm leaving a little gap probably about a
millimeter or so and just make sure you straight here that the entries match up
before you press you down the reason for this gap will become clear later on when
we start to put the box together but it will also help us for this next step
this side of the paper will now fold up so again I'll just swivel around so I'm
folding away from myself and we need to make sure that we fold in that gap there
and that also eats straight along this edge
and then I'll open that one out so the crease that we've made it goes through
the little gap that we had before that is nearly 8 the last fold is to put a
crease from this middle point here to the outside corner here and the easiest
way to do that is to fold this single edge up to this single edge like this
and I'm going to concentrate on getting a nice point there holding that in and
then swiveling up the paper like so but I only want to crease it up to that
crease line here and that needs to be a really good hard crease and then if we
pull this section down the box will stand up and we can pinch this corner to
make sure it's nice and straight this edge and this edge and that is one
segment one quarter of your box made we just need to make deal the three we've
now got the corners of the boxes arranged how they're going to go
together there are a few things that you can take note of which will help and
that is the piece of paper in the left hand always goes inside the right hand
the wall of the box and this triangular base of the box so this side the left
always goes inside the right so the wall of the box
and the base of the box but we only put it halfway
we don't go any further yes if we did we wouldn't be able to get the last one in
I'll put those on to the left-hand side bring my next piece in and again left
hand always goes inside right hand like this so the wall of the box and the base
of the box just halfway these points in the bottom look a little bit erratic
that doesn't matter we sort that out later okay so the last corner and again
left hand always goes in right hand like so and then finally piece number four
goes into piece number one left inside right just halfway so as I say before it
looks a bit of a mess down there but don't worry about that now we very
carefully turn everything over and we can arrange these points by pushing down
so every point goes under every other point and then we'd slowly squeeze it
all together this is quite a tall box so it's a little bit difficult so I'm just
gonna push each one a little bit at a time making sure it all goes in nice and
evenly if he starts to go off a little bit it's going to make it awkward to
push together so if I do this side a little bit
and on this side I just keep going you can always just tap them in a little bit
but they won't go completely into the corners because obviously you've got the
thickness of the paper now before when I mention we left that gap between the
triangle on the top of the paper this is where it comes in handy because that gap
is right in the corners right in the corners of the box is down here if we
push the paper down like that this base of the box will get trapped in that gap
and that stops it from coming out that is your box
so let's calculate the size that we need now for the lid so the width of the box
has to be the same so it was 8t width that's a width and the height of the
paper has to be the width plus the height plus the height so that one
obviously is 80 now the height I'm going to calculate it always looks nice if you
have about a third things divided into three so I'm going to go for about 35
millimeters so that's the height of the lid so this is 35 and 35 so what we've
got is not quite a square we've got a hundred and sixty this way and a hundred
and fifty this way so it's quite important that we fold it the right way
if we have the pay for this way around and start folding it's not going to fit
so we have to make sure that we are the right way around when we start folding
so this is the width of the box plus the width of the box and this way is the
width of the box plus the height plus the height so I've got to keep it this
way around it's very easy to accidentally fold them the wrong way
around so what I'm going to do is with all four of these pieces is put that
first crease in now while I've got the paper all the same way around and then I
won't make the mistake of getting hold of it the wrong way
messing everything up it is so easy to do so crease is vertical bottom
right-hand corner Falls up to the crease line and the top
edge of the paper falls down we always fold it away from ourselves and we leave
that little gap but a millimeter saw just check you straight
rusty pound crease it in and then I can fold that one this way using the gap as
a guide checking it straight whoops there we go
open that out so we've got our single layer of paper and this is where we put
the last days no crease from the midpoint through the outer edge just the
same as before the folding is exactly the same it's
just the size of the paper that's different stand this one up
pinch everything in and there we go so that's one corner just as we did with
the box the left-hand side always goes inside the right both the wall of the
box and the base of the box just halfway
left inside right
I'm left inside right and then finally the last one left inside right just
halfway like so doesn't matter about the points yet we're going to reorganize the
holes now when we squeeze this together we want it to be just the right size to
fit on the box so let's put it on the box that also gives us some space to
push the points in and then we can squeeze it together
very gently um because it's on the box it squeezes down to the perfect size for
the box just one word of caution if you're going to use four colors you have
to think about how they're going to go together
when these two colors we know just to put them opposite but with four colors
we've got to think about it because we want them to match if I flip
the lid through hundred-and-eight see all the colors will not job but these
look really nice this way around so the colors are
opposite so how would you make sure that you get these colors the same as these
well this is how he's done I need to know which order these are going to go
together and the easiest thing to do is use the base of the box as a guide but
because the lid flips over it's actually upside down to this box so if I turn
this upside down I can use these as a guide so I want green and yellow
and then blue and then red so that is the order that the lid has to go
together in so that everything lines up
or not as the case may be
Les Paul's who want to make a very wide but shallow box it's a hundred and fifty
millimeters square but only thirty five millimeters tall so let's work that out
so it's 150 150 and the width this way 150 so the height is 35 135 so the
following sequence is exactly the same it's just the size of the paper that
gives us a different size of unit and they're put together in exactly the same
way well I'm sure a lot of makers will find that useful do let me know if you
have a go and send me an image or to contact details are in the description
as usual in my studio I have a color laser printer which is about twelve
years old I keep it going by scrounging parts from
other dead printers of the same model that have been scrapped by local
businesses I'm planning an automaton build in the new year and decided to
completely strip down one of these donor machines to see if there were any parts
that may prove useful
the problem we're taking things apart that were not designed to come apart is
getting them apart basically if you see a screw you undo it if it still won't
come off
you hit it Oh screw I'm looking for bearings gears drive shafts anything
really that may come in handy so what did I find
plastic lots of plastic unmarked and unknown probably ABS I wanted gears and
there were gears but all helical the teeth cuts at an angle
my project will be a Heath Robinson affair so no way can I use any of these
they're probably made from MC nylon so I can't even melt them down and cast them
into blanks like I come with HDPE there were lots of screws probably the only
parts in this machine that came off the shelf and weren't designed specially a
generous assortment of springs there was also a lot of metal they don't build
them like this anymore everything apart from these circuit boards can go in my
home recycling bins but I'll have to take these to the recycling center so my
haul was pretty small two solenoids I'll keep them as spares a couple of
press-fit bearings two useable Drive shafts
and I'll save some of the springs just in case they may come in handy
and also I'll keep a small amount of this sheet metal I can use this for
fabricating brackets are making mounts so not a totally fruitless event Jim
well not much from another venture I'm afraid but I was amazed to see just how
much of that printer could be recycled and saved from landfill so I may do the
same with the others in the future a bunch of us here on YouTube have come
together to form a Facebook group know why here you say neither nor the
Facebook group please but this is different
all of us have small workshops and I mean small less than a hundred and fifty
square feet a smaller than you car garage I thought my workshop was small
at eight foot by six foot but others are building projects in spaces even smaller
now a lack of space is an issue in itself and you have to be resourceful in
order to make it work but when you add the fight that you're a YouTube content
maker working in a small space can prove difficult because not only are you
limited for room to start with you also have added equipment such as cameras
tripods sound equipment additional lighting sometimes you need to open the
door just to breathe I mean I'm sitting here now or when it looks all comfy-cozy
but I'm actually sat on a portable tool box and just take a look at what I'm
looking at filming these vlogs turns my little workshop into a film set and I've
so much to remember that I have to use an also cue to get through it all the
small workshop YouTube makers group has become a valuable resource for help and
sharing of knowledge and ideas it's made our work so much easier it's a closed
group for obvious reasons but if you have a
small space and you're a YouTube maker do consider joining and sharing your
experiences it doesn't matter what medium it is you could work in was metal
or plastic or pepper paint cake decorating knitting we're all amateurs
and we do this for the love of it so there's no reason to feel intimidated as
usual I'll leave all the details in the description if you want to investigate
further there's still the Christmas special to come that's in a couple of
weeks and we'll see if Stanley the clown finally manages to escape
please do take the time to support your artists and makers if you're not able to
purchase their work to support them financially you can always share tweet
and spread the word social Reach is everything for all struggling artists
and please don't just like and leave if you take the time to comment it means
the world to us and it shows you took the time to appreciate our work and it
doesn't cost you a penny your feedback encourages us to continue in the face of
adversity many of us try to entertain you better than the carp on television
oh I might have to bleep out yeah you know what I mean anyways apologies are
in order for some of you waiting for your 8x6 stickers I have been inundated
with requests and I've just been struggling to keep up the last batch has
just gone out and I don't think I've missed anybody out it's been so manic if
you've asked for one and you haven't got it yet
and your name is not on the screen now then I do apologize for missing you out
do get in touch again and I'll get it sorted I've had some more stickers
dropped through the letterbox recently they saw let's have a look and see
what's on the sticker wall keith saunders of asgard woodturning will
tackle anything woodturning would work in resin casting scroll sawing he may be
a newcomer to youtube but his subscriber count is clicking up nicely if you
haven't heard of make itself yet you must have been living under a rock she's
taken a small maker seen by stone and has recently been a guest on the
maker's international podcast she makes incredible things from the
simplest of materials so do check out her channel I am super excited to
receive a sticker from Michael zurka a Turner maker and an artist I drop
everything when I get a notification he's published a video he's an
inspiration to me new to woodworking on YouTube Phil cannons channel is growing
Andy demonstrates a wide range of projects he's recently been
experimenting with live feeds on his Facebook page
I do give a shout-out for anyone who sends in a sticker so keep them coming
now Sophie Lewis who we've just seen has sent me this she's been making some Lego
caricatures and she sent me this little guy he's fantastic
he's even got Stanley the clump so thanks very much for that self he's too
excellent to stay in the workshop and get dusty and dirty so he's going to
live in the studio where it's always nice and warm now contact details are in
the description if you'd like to do a sticker exchange or you'd like one of
mine for your wall that's about it for this time but if you've been following
the antics of Andy Berkey with these table saw tackles and Al's hack Shack
with his hack Shack jalapenos making snacks in the workshop is becoming
popular so I decided to finish this edition by seeing what healthy options I
could come up with so until next time jobs are Gooden for the homeless you'll
need a large pan you'll see why soon some chickpeas tahini dark or light
makes no difference splash of lemon juice bit of garlic and
a pinch of salt we're going to wheeze it all
just nice I want my picture bred slightly tall steed
it's not essential to do this but it is fun
now we're going to use some sharp tools so do stay safe you can use any solid
ingredients you like to fill your pizza I like mine crunchy so I'm using some
radish salary and some sugar snap peas
organic tomatoes have more flavor
do make sure your ski was sharp if you want a clean cut you have to make sure
your lettuce is secure you don't want it moving and binding on the blade
apply liberal coating of homemade hummus
spoon in your prepared salad and seal with the lettuce
a handful of mixed nuts and you have six of your five a day
hmm you can't beat workshop prepared food but make sure you clean up after
you don't want to attract any mice
preparation is quick but the washing or bath detects ages
you

Dicas de um poliglota para falar uma língua estrangeira de verdade - Duration: 17:40.
I want to start telling the story of how it all began.
I had basically just to graduate and moved to Spain
And I went to this dinner for a group of international exchange students from all over the world
And suddenly I saw this Brazilian guy, a very interesting figure
And he gave me an impressive show of multilingual I had never seen in my life
Basically, another Brazilian approached
And he said something like "Hey, brother, what happened yesterday? You disappeared! Nobody deserves."
Then he turned, then immediately to a Frenchman who was singing because he was a beautiful boy
And thus spoke (in French ...)
Then he turned to the event organizer, a Spaniard, and spoke (in Spanish ....)
Then he turned to me and said, with a very heavy American accent
In fact, I can not imitate the American accent ... I'm sorry (laughs)
Anyway, I asked him "How do you do this?"
How's talking all this language !?
Because I, to be honest, could only speak English
Well, that 8 years ago.
I grew up thinking, I do not ... ham ... I just can not do it
You can not, because I had German and Irish-Gaelic school
but I was very wrong in these matters, so I thought I had no talent for languages
Gene, you know
Oh I know all about genetics, even though I have not studied. But I was right, I did not have the talent gene for languages (ironic tone)
I had various excuses and reasons that many people can relate
Like, I did not have time or resources ... I was too old
Though I have only 21, I thought "this is it, I'm too old and passed the age"
I had heard someone say that after 13 years you can not learn a new language
So I was sure of it. You have to learn as a child and go!
And of all the reasons people have, I had an extra reason
I had an illness as a child and had to do speech therapy because of the difficulty in learning English
I still have difficulties in pronunciation from time to time, but most of the things that I pronounce incorrectly today is because of my Irish accent (laughs)
So do not worry about it
Well, I was 100% sure that it was not possible and asked that guy (the Brazilian linguist)
How do you do to speak all these languages !?
And he said "Oh you know, I'm just trying to speak the language"
Driving me to the person using the language
So I said "oh no ... it can not be that simple"
So I challenged myself and decided I wanted to learn Spanish
I had just moved to Spain and decided that instead of just making a quick stage
that I only use my native language, English, because I had my degree in Electronic Engineering, you know, only he used the left side of the brain
It was good at math, not language
But I decided "not I can find a way"
I will find a way to learn the language.
So I dove in all methods you can imagine
I took a course and expensive that only had 3 or 4 people in the classroom
I attended by several weeks. Did not work.
I started studying several books. Did not work.
I took a course in the city, I used software. Did not work.
I tried to read a book! My first choice, not very wise I think it was the Lord of the Rings
I thought "I'll read this book in Spanish" I have a dictionary that I would consult every two words basically
Li to the second page and realized it would not account
So after 6 months living in Spain I could not even speak Spanish ...
It only convinced me even more that I had no talent, cream genius who speaks several languages
But then I had an idea and that's what I want to share with people
What I have tried to show to the world is that it is not talent
I really feel that talent is actually irrelevant
Some people may even come out better, but it does not matter to you.
So what I did was to start speaking Spanish
I do not know if that makes sense now, but it will certainly make
The problem was that during the six months I was studying Spanish
I studied so much that it turned out to be something very difficult for me
All those subjunctive, definite articles, things were just confusing me.
And after much study I had not yet evolved. I did not know many words.
After six months I was still in only level could speak "hola" "gracias" "please" and "adios" knows !?
Fleeing this way
But then I decided "I will begin to speak the language"
I will ignore all those excuses like, "I'm not ready" "need to study more"
"I'm not smart enough to learn a new language"
I'll get to speak the language.
And then everything changed.
Shortly after I was already progressing.
A few weeks later I realized I was doing everything in Spanish, living the life practicing the language
And eventually I reached the point where my level was already very good.
Now the problem is that whenever we will find that person who will say that it is impossible for them
They always have many reasons to justify why they can not just start talking ...
Luckily, I had the opportunity to hear the most famous reasons to see if I can convince you that
I truly believe that anyone can learn a new language
One thing people will say is that they do not have the words
When you start to learn a language you do not have words
How can I talk to someone?
But if you are learning a Latin language like Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese
What people do not realize is that they already have perhaps thousands of words before you even start
Because, I think in 1066 when the French Normandy arrived in England
and they stood for centuries, they had two social classes
or the poor peasants who spoke a Germanic language
and the rich or noble speaking something close French
and eventually these two languages merged
then in English we have a vast French vocabulary that ends up being similar or identical in Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese and so on
so if you learn some of these words have you out in front
and you can find out without having to learn the language, how to pronounce the words
so if you remember the different levels of formality
Say I want to say the word "country" in Spanish, but I forgot how
or I do not know what the word is because I never had contact with her
How about rephrase the word in their own language thinking of another way to say the word "country"
I could say "nation". Maybe not exactly mean the same thing, but it's close enough
And the nation is just nación (in Spanish) or nation (in French) or whatever the corresponding language
Or you might think, if someone knocks on the door you can say "come in" (in English) and fine
or you can also say "enter" and "enter" comes from the French origin and there you have "come" (Portuguese), "entrer" (French) and so on
So until then you already have a few words, but say you're going away
For example, an Asian language or the Middle East
is still not possible, today, start learning a language from scratch, from nothing
It's not possible! Because you always have something!
Human beings are interacting all the time
Do you have any brand names or technologies that use the same word
So you can imagine how it would be difficult to find a language that at least one or all
such as Coca-Cola, International, Obama would not have the same meaning anywhere in the world, you know !?
That's universal. If you think about it. I myself have used brand name to me initially get along with people
And then when you get a vocabulary that can take you to learn words you had not had contact before
You can try some memory tricks.
I have a bad memory!
It looks like I have a device that activates censorship when the person speaks her name
It's kind of like "nice to meet you" I am "pii"
I forget the name immediately!
But despite this, I learn words quickly because I try to make it fun
I think to myself, like when I was learning Spanish
I caught the word "beach" (beach in English) and saw "playa" (beach in Spanish)
Then I thought, okay, "playa" even looks a bit like an English word "player"
So I thought, well imagine that, when I think of "player" comes to mind an artist and tacky grip
Imagine this super confident guy walking the Spanish beaches trying to pick up girls and carrying a slap in the face
It's a very visual image.
From there I remembered, well, if I saw the word "playa" which was similar to the word "player" I remembered the guy on the beach!
And conversely it worked well.
If you think of "playa" and associated with "player" and makes the opposite way, you can quickly learn the words by association
No matter how bad his memory.
And you can learn phrases.
I like to introduce some music because it is a good place to start with your tongue when you want to learn the basics
Type "where is the bathroom" and things like that
So what I would do if I was learning, like, Italian
I'd get "where is the bathroom"
Dove si trova yl gabinetto
And I thought, um, I do not know ... I'll get The Big Ben Time
And I sang to myself sometimes "Dove si trova il gabinettooo" (singing)
And I kept singing and singing ...
and ready, I had memorized!
And that's despite the bad memory I have.
So, words are not the problem.
You can learn a language if you do not know a word
In fact, you have to accept that you know many words
Thousands if not tens of thousands
The other problem that people talk about is the grammar
When you learn a language at school, as many of us do
Most of it is in grammar school
I learned German in school. And, for me, German was just "dehr, dis, the, tables" of complicated structures
who intimidated me fully
And this is not a language!
This is a list of rules that is as good as mathematics or something
And it does not work. The language means communication.
When you try to put it in a box full of grammatical rules
you are not allowing you to use the language to communicate freely
I honestly like grammar
I am not against grammar and I am not saying to burn the grammar books
But what I consider much more effective
is that if you are committed to talk
The talk wrong
And I encourage people to talk to as many possible errors
I purpose to commit as many errors when I am learning a language
Because then I know I'm going somewhere
because I'm talking to people!
I know my grammar is bad at first
but something interesting happened because I hated grammar in school
I had grammar in English class, Irish-Gaelic and German grammar
I hated! It was so boring ... but now I love grammar!
Because what happens is that I put it aside
I do not leave forever. I leave aside
I engajo me on the tongue, start to learn some phrases, some people find
I start using the language. And after a few months
When I feel that language is part of me
I can communicate and use it as a human being
Then I come back to grammar
And it's very interesting because it's like the historical account of the language
Ah that's why they talk like that!
It is very cool!
So grammar can be pretty cool if you deal with it that way
Another reason is money.
People say "I have no money"
I have to buy this expensive program
I have to do this course I heard
I think all these things have in common is the placebo effect
Like, have you invested so much money you may end up struggling more because of it
And I think the components of the course, unless it is an immersion course
They end up leaving aside what really matters
But anyway, people get what they want
Some people have success doing these courses because they invest so much money
that means they who bear it
One thing I think is much more efficient when you make the public issue
I think the reason I learned Spanish that first time
It was because I told everybody!
I not only promised myself and then did what my New Year's resolution
"Learn Spanish someday"
Has seven days a week and "someday" is not one of them
You need to start now!
I started and I told everybody. All my friends
my family, all the world, because it was responsible
I felt responsible. I had to deliver.
Otherwise, I feel embarrassed.
This was much more powerful than spend money and feel that I had to use it.
Money is not the problem, you can do all this for free.
You can meet people for free without having to travel abroad
There are so many good connection forms today. Several networking sites where you search by language
or if you have no one in your city you can talk to someone on skype
So you can learn any language that way
Another thing I think is one of the great things for people is that they think will frustrate
the person with whom they are talking
I think that is the biggest problem that I heard
You will talk to the person and she will be mad
Like, "You're ruining my tongue, how dare you!"
It is not how it happens.
I think even ironic when people tell me that
That, you know, they will bother the person with whom they are talking
Well, actually, most people I talk to and who are willing to learn a language
I see a lot of frustration in their eyes just because they can not speak yet
Right here, I met people like that, who is in San Antonio, surrounded by people who speak Spanish, but still can not communicate with them
And they feel so frustrated by that!
And that's a frustration about the size of a lifetime
I feel that this is much bigger than, like, talk to someone who can roll your eyes, or whatever
But it does not happen!
In fact, among the natives of other languages than English
I see it in the whole world if you try to speak the language with them
They are filled with joy!
They think, wow, he's trying to speak my language!
He does not expect that everyone has to speak English!
So you, in fact, be encouraged!
People will be telling you "you're doing great"
Even if you have science that your grammar is bad
You keep using the same 10 words the whole time
In the first days
But it's alright! Because you are beginning to communicate with people
I think that's what's missing
This idea of communication
Language is not the kind of thing you have to test
You may be right or wrong
Not the kind of thing that is white or black
It's like humans speak to each other
And there's no wrong way to do this
If your words are a bit strange
You forget to conjugate the verb, or whatever
People will always understand you
I'm sure you've heard someone speaking English (or your language)
imperfectly. You will always understand.
So, I think the problem people have with frustration
is that they think that the world will end if they
try to speak the language
The whole world will end
I honestly think the opposite
I think a new world will begin
If you try to speak a new language with people
So I really hope you try.
Thank you so much!
