IS SAILING IN INDONESIA DANGEROUS? ANAMBAS Ep 87 - Duration: 15:04.
Could this be the quintessential desert island?
We walk around the village, poke our nose in people's houses
Quite a reasonable amount of life actually, and some very pretty colors down there.
We thought we might as well turn the engine off
As you may be able to hear it's a Friday, and of course all the men and many of
the boys are down the mosque. You can see behind me the young boys here, clearly
not very interested in the sermon more occupied by the fact there's a camera
pointing at them. But of course they're very friendly and looking very smart
in their Friday lunchtime attire.
This is our second day in the village of Palma.. Palmen... Palmanak?
One thing that occurred to me whilst we've
been at anchor for the last few days, one of the things we've had to put up with
is that every single boat that comes into the bay
has to come via our boat. Last night we had, I think they were probably the
fishermen that have moored up outside the end of the bay, and they came past
when it was after dark and just screamed at us didn't they? Yeah those shouting
shouting, and they came really close and I think the last one I remember was 20
to 1:00 in the morning. Yes but then to be honest it's a fair trade you know
we're a bit of a spectacle being anchored out in the bay, as we come around
the corner we can see her now sitting there. And it's a source of amusement for
the locals. But of course you can turn that on its head because we come ashore
and now it's our turn. We walk around the village, poke our nose in people's
houses and stick cameras at people! So in that respect it's I think it's you know,
we can't complain. Can't really no. It got a little bit annoying because we don't
make quite as much noise as their engines do!
It's a little bit windy out here, but I've just walked down a little
passageway to... I suppose it's the front of someone's house. It's a rather
splendid house actually, two-story and solid looking, and out the back he has
his own little jetty which is just here. And what looks like, and I'm sure it
isn't, but it looks like a volleyball court out the back! But we should mention
that it seems that volleyball is a very popular sport here in Indonesia and
we've seen quite a few people playing it on the beaches. And what else do we have
here? On the floor here it's covered in - rather than shingle and stones, it's all
broken coral. They've lined their pathway with coral. They have coconut
husks drying out in the sun here, which of course among many things can be used
to get rid of mosquitoes at night. It's very slow burning and is a very
good way of getting rid of pesky pests like that.
And this is the house itself.
We're at the coffee shop, and I've just been volunteered to try some therapy.
It's supposed to be good for the circulation, so we're just gonna have a go now.
Hot? [Yes.] So I put this on my skin? [Yeah it's cool...]
So rub this on my skin? [Yes] Like this? [No, no!] Laughter.
You do it for me!
Ohhh, it's heating up.
He's adding water to it. It's heating up. I can feel the heat on my hands.
I think it might be caustic soda!
Very good. I feel very healthy now! [Yes]
It is now time to leave the island of Mubur, and the little village of Palamak
where we say goodbye to our friends. We have 80 meters of chain down, we're
currently in 26 meters of water, so I think this is going to take a little bit of
time to get the chain up. So nice and slowly does it. We've got a nice fresh
breeze coming in from the south-southwest but where we're going is
literally just in between these two islands and we have a local
recommendation. One of the guys we chatted to yesterday from the village
recommended a little anchorage. We're not sure why, but we thought we'd just go and
have a quick look it's not too far away might be able to get the headsail out
just to sail up the channel. But first things first, let's see if we can get
this anchor up.
Are there any chain markers at 70? Yeah. I've got the 70 and the 60 in.
We've motored out of "The Fjord" and around the corner. Had a little bit of current
against us. We're now running parallel to the Fjord on the east side.
This is a channel that takes us between two islands, and we thought well we might as
well turn the engine off.
So this is the Salat Matak straight, and we're actually quite lucky because
we've got current pushing us through because there's no wind, last time I
checked it was 1.2 knots of wind. We've got the foresail out, and the mizzen
out, and we're making three knots. It's OK. It's very beautiful here,
absolutely beautiful. Quite narrow. We've got villages on either side. A little bit
of activity in the water. Just enjoying the silence actually. Apart from that boat.
Cleaning the oceans one bit of plastic at a time!
I caught one before and she wouldn't eat it. Liz has literally just put the rod in the water and immediately...
Look at that! Look at how that rod's bending! [Laughs] I think it's a (can't remember what they're called) Ramore?
You know, they live under boats? ["That's r'Amore"] Someone's excited.
I don't want to bring it on board. We don't need it. They're not very nice to eat.
She wouldn't even eat the last one I caught.
Could this be the quintessential desert island?
This is Tingileh Island, and if this doesn't float your boat, the next place
is going to be this one over here!
I've just been snorkeling on the reef here. Shallows it's quite dead, most of
its dead. There's a bit of life in there, not too much. Then as you go out and you
hit the reef proper, then it all comes to life. There's brain coral, stag horn coral.
There's urchins, a lot of fish. And then a big drop-off with
a load more coral. I saw some fan coral. Quite a reasonable amount of life, actually.
and some very pretty colors down there.
Well this stop's been a bit of a nature stop. Our last anchorage was more about
the people on the land, and the stilted houses. Whereas this one around
the corner has just been about nature. Just this morning, waking up to
the dawn chorus of these tropical birds and you've got the terns flying around
diving into the water trying to find fish. Just so peaceful and relaxing.
We are probably going to move on now. I think. Just because we don't have great
weather, and the coral around here isn't brilliant. Don't get me wrong. In
perspective it's still pretty impressive, but there's quite a bit of dead coral
Just here is a reef, we've anchored quite close to it but we've been OK. And we
have to send off an important email. That's one of the problems here.
Internet connection is non-existent, and we have to get this email sent so
we're just going to go for a little motor back around the bay that we came
into a couple of days ago, and Liz is going to send that email. We've got the
water-maker running, making a bit more water. And then we're just going to probably sail.
Hopefully. Just a few miles around the north part of the islands
here. And there's little anchorage just around the other side.
Unfortunately the weather today's a little bit overcast, but of course as always it
keeps the temperature down, which is quite nice.
Technology eh? This is us trying to send an important email. It is an important
email, and it has to be done now. So we've left the anchorage, and we've motored
back down towards the little airport here, where we remembered the other day that
we got a connection. So I'm now running a hot spot so that
Liz can do something on her laptop, which is playing up because...I dunno...
there's a bit of dirt in it or something. Anyway, we've sent the important email,
but she's now got to tend to some banking business because we know that
the next anchorage is going to have absolutely no connection at all, so need to get
this done now. Here we are, just bobbing around in the middle of the bay, clinging
on to this connection

Cornet Pie 🐚 코로네 파이 [FOOD VIDEO] [스윗더미 . Sweet The MI] - Duration: 15:18.
Hi this is Sweet The Mi.
Today I'm back with cornet pie recipe.
This pie is so fluffy and great sweet cream goes so well together!
First let's make puff pastry dough.
Sift together flour and salt in a bowl.
Add room temperature butter into flour, gently lifting flour and tossing to coat butter.
Gradually add the ice water over flour mixture and
gently mix until incorporated.
Gently knead the dough until it comes together.
When the dough is ready then chill
wrapped in plastic wrap, until firm about 30 minutes.
Get ready with the butter to add into the dough.
Mix the butter and flour and shape as a square box.
wrapped in plastic wrap, then chill in the fridge.
Time to roll out the dough and Place the disc of chilled butter in the dough and fold.
Butter disk shouldn't be too hard or too soft.
Press with a finger it should gently pressed.
We'll be rolling out the dough using a rolling pin,
Place the butter and pound into a flat disc using a rolling pin
Fold the dough as this video clip.
Roll the folded dough and repeat this process for total 4 times.
When the butter goes too soft
Chill the dough back in the fridge and continue the process later.
If the butter mixture is too hard butter might stick out while rolling so please be careful.
Continue this process and the butter will be placed between all pastry layers.
Roll the dough thin and cut the dough into long strips.
Wrap pastry dough strip around the cornet mold.
I'm using a Store bought cornet mold
but you can make your own mold with a thick paper or foil.
Brush the warped dough with egg wash and sugar.
Bake at 190℃(380℉) for 20~25 minutes.
Now let's make Diplomat cream to fill the cornet.
First we need to make custard cream.
In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar and flour.
Boil the milk and the butter in a pan
When the milk is boiling, pour it over the egg mixture.
Pour the mixture through a strainer and boil with a low heat.
cook on low heat whisking continuously
When the mixture is thicken enough turn the gas off and add the vanilla extract.
Pour the pastry cream in a container Cover the pastry cream with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge.
A large container will help the cream chill faster.
Pour the cold custard cream in a bowl
whip it to make it "creamy" again.
Add the whipped heavy cream and mix.
Spoon the diplomat cream into the pastry bag.
Fill each baked cornet with cream,
my cornet pie is done!
With sugar coated outside it's crunchy and light soft
And cream is very heavy and good it's a beautiful Pie!
It's hard to make puff pastry dough but
I hope you give it a try!
I'll catch you guys in next video Bye~!

isn't, but it looks like a volleyball court out the back!

IS PLANET EARTH BEING TERRAFORMED BY NON-HUMANS - Duration: 7:04.
IS PLANET EARTH BEING TERRAFORMED BY NON-HUMANS
BY Buck Rogers,
Some things happening on planet earth today just dont make sense if youre looking
at them from the perspective of an ordinary human being.
For one example, look at the amount of financial debt being accrued around the world.
Were talking trillions and trillions of dollars.
It seems utterly cartoonish that human beings could owe this much money to other human beings.
The numbers actually make more sense if consider that our creditors may actually be off-planet
entities.
Take also for example, the widespread industrial scale destruction of the planet.
The Athabasca oil sands project in Alberta, Canada, is a scorched earth endeavor so large
it is being compared to the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Great Wall of China.
Mountaintop removal in the Appalachians, the end of the Amazon, such callousness about
Fukushima none of it makes sense.
But if you expand the realm of possibility when trying to comprehend all of this, it
actually makes more sense that the driving forces behind such wholesale destruction of
the planet arent from here.
Those pressing for all of this arent dependent on these ecosystems for life.
Perhaps our earth is being used by off-planet entities for its resources, and the planet
is being actively terraformed to maximize the efficiency of resource extraction.
Terraforming is, the hypothetical process of deliberately modifying its [a planets]
atmosphere, temperature, surface topography or ecology to be similar to the environment
of Earth to make it habitable by Earth-like life. They use the term hypothetical because
as far as we know it has never been done, however, a holistic look at events on earth
at present fit the description of terraforming, except in reverse.
Earth is being terraformed to look like some other place.
Writer V. Susan Ferguson wonders if an extraterrestrial race is already here, in the millions, and
if the planet is being altered to be more favorable to their particular needs.
They are Terraforming our Earth to make it suitable for the hybrids that are now said
to number in the millions.
A planet that has been slowly chemically altered, made physically denser, warmer, drier and
slightly more radioactive and methane-rich is evident.
The insanity of building nuclear power plants next to ocean shores as in Fukushima show
an intent to increase radiation.
The melting of the Arctic, Greenland, and Antarctica is causing the release of vast
amounts of methane.
Are the hybrids immune to large amounts of radiation and methane.
Do aluminum resistant GMOs agree with their immune systems?
Is this the hypothesis that most accurately fits a world where geoengineering is broadly
evident and is more and more frequently described by the mainstream news as a necessary part
of adapting to climate change?
Unknown to most, it became exceedingly clear by approximately 2025 that governments
had in fact reengineered [geoengineered]Earths atmosphere, its oceans and the planets
electromagnetic grid to facilitate the use of scalar and sonic technology in such a way
as was harmful and in some cases detrimental globally. ~Timeline Collapse & Universal
Ascension, E.M. Nicolay & H.L. Jang
These projects are so massive and involve complex cooperation between industry and government.
Regarding the amount of investment it takes to finance projects like these, Timothy Good
in his book Earth An Alien Enterprise: The Shocking Truth Behind the Greatest Cover-Up
in Human History quotes William J. Pawlec, a former U.S. Air Force computer and programming
specialist:
What concerns me is when these projects go beyond black people with ulterior
motives have gotten in control of these projects and/or the funding of them, and/or the ability
of what is really scary, to write their own unlimited checks with no recourse to anybody.
They are not even a budget item anymore.
They literally authorize the Treasury to cut them checks, [and] it becomes evident that
they have agendas that are independent of the goals of the United States.
And the attitude is seemingly one of control power and control. ~William J. Pawlec
Meanwhile, the demolition of the environment only accelerates, and all the while it appears
that nature is somehow being weaponized so that both the weather and the earths electromagnetic
field can be utilized for geopolitical ends.
Regarding the use of technology to reshape the earths electromagnetic environment,
Ferguson refers to Nicolay:
Nicolay says that perhaps the most destructive use of these technologies that have weaponized
our atmosphere is the use of the Earth itself as a medium for transmitting massive scalar
and electromagnetic energy waves that could silently be used for enormously destructive
purposes anywhere in the world. Awareness of the potential for bullying countries into
agreements regarding trade and military installations can be considered when we read of unprecedented
anomalous hurricanes, tsunamis, floods, droughts, and bizarre firestorms.
They blame these occurrences on global warming, which then justifies more geoengineering.
Read between the lines.
Our planet is dying.
Nicolay: By the mid to late 2010s hardly any region on Earth was free of the newly
ionized and metalized atmosphere, or by virtue of particle fallout, the ionization of the
electromagnetic grid system of the planet.
Earth itself, and its atmosphere, were [are] now the ideal medium for the transfer of vast
waves of scalar energy, which could be used to control weather patterns, control natural
phenomena, or directed and delivered with near pinpoint accuracy and devastating results.
Final Thoughts
There is something to think about here.
We can ignore these problems all we want, but they are not going away, but will rather
continue to exacerbate environmental and societal stress.
Our current popular understanding of how the world is managed does not have an explanation
for such heinous crimes against mother nature, of which we are the ultimate victims.
Could there be some sort of extraterrestrial or breakaway civilization having its way with
this planet, for some end which we cannot be allowed to know for certain?

The 9 Best Places to Travel Alone - Duration: 10:07.
The 9 Best Places to Travel Alone.
Don't have a travel companion?
That's no reason to stay home.
Solo travel is growing increasingly popular; in fact, a recent survey of IndependentTraveler.com
readers revealed that nearly 30 percent of them travel alone.
Solo travelers can and do go just about anywhere, but there are certain places around the world
that are particularly easy and even rewarding to visit by yourself.
In crafting our list of the best places to travel alone, we looked at factors such as
safety, local culture, the chance to meet other travelers and the ease of getting around
if you don't speak the language.
1: New Zealand.
Solo travelers who love hiking, mountain biking or other outdoor activities shouldn't miss
New Zealand.
It's one of the world's most relaxing places to travel; crime is low, and just about
every city and town has its own visitor info center with friendly staff who will help you
find lodging or book activities (so you'll never feel lost).
Best of all, there are countless adventures to be had, from the country's famous Great
Walks to "Lord of the Rings" tours.
2: Denmark.
Exploring Denmark, which appears frequently on top 10 lists of the world's safest and
happiest countries, is a breeze for solo travelers.
Most Danes speak English and are glad to help tourists find their way around; some even
welcome travelers into their homes for dinner!History lovers can enjoy Viking ruins and medieval
castles, while outdoorsy sorts can join the locals on the thousands of miles of bike paths
that crisscross
the country.
3: Thailand.
Thanks to smiling locals, unforgettable sights and a well-established backpacker trail, Thailand
is incredibly popular with people traveling alone.
You can make your solo trip anything you want in Thailand: an urban adventure in Bangkok,
a week on the beaches of Koh Samui, a homestay in a northern hill town, a yoga retreat on
a remote island — or a mix of all of the above.
4: Chile.
This long, skinny country is one of South America's safest, boasting incredible landscapes
(beaches!
Mountains!
Glaciers!) as well as delicious wines.
Chileans are friendly and welcoming, although they don't all speak English — so you'll
want to brush up on basic Spanish phrases before you go.
Popular spots to visit include the remote Atacama Desert in the north and the sweeping
mountain vistas of Patagonia in the south.
5: Israel.
While terrorism is an ever-present concern, security is high and millions of people safely
visit Israel each year, including plenty of solo travelers.
Most of them spend at least a few days exploring the holy sites and colorful markets of Jerusalem
before moving on to cosmopolitan Tel Aviv, the beach town of Eilat or the mountain fortress
of Masada.
You're sure to meet other travelers along the way, whether you stay in hostels or kibbutzim
(farms).
6: Ireland.
Ireland holds numerous appeals for solo travelers: It's safe, beautiful and an easy place for
English speakers to get around.
But what we love best about Ireland is how friendly it is.
The locals will say hi to you on the street or strike up a conversation with you at the
pub, so you'll never lack for friends even if you're traveling alone.
You can also meet fellow travelers at hostels, on trains or over the breakfast table at a
B&B.
7: Belize.
As the only English-speaking country in Central America, Belize is easy to navigate via your
own vehicle or the inexpensive local buses.
It's also full of fascinating places for solo travelers to explore, from Mayan temples
to mysterious caves.
Don't miss a stay on Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker for snorkeling, diving or beach bumming.
8: Tanzania.
Is an African safari on your bucket list?
Consider a solo trip to Tanzania, where you can spot the Big Five and much more.
If you want to meet fellow travelers, look for a camp or lodge that offers communal meals
and shared game drives, or join a group trip.
Keep an eye out for tours with a discounted or waived single supplement (you'll often
see these during the off season when demand is low), or book with a company such as Intrepid
Travel or G Adventures, which will help you skip the supplement by matching you with a
same-sex roommate.
9: Hong Kong.
Hong Kong's low crime rate, efficient public transportation system, and unique combination
of Eastern and Western cultures make it an inviting spot for solo travelers, especially
those who haven't yet traveled much on their own.
Because English is one of the city's official languages, you'll never feel like you're
lost in translation, nor will you run out of things to do, with countless options from
harbor front museums to the bustling restaurants of Nathan Road.

RuneScape IMPORTANT MESSAGE to ALL VIEWERS - PLEASE WATCH WITH (CC) (Closed Caption) - Duration: 2:22.
After so long of making these RuneScape videos I wanted to come clean on why you never hear me talk despite so many requests from others to simply talk.
Talking could grow my channel beyond what it is and I know this. The truth is, I don't talk on these videos and that is because I suffer from Elective Mutisim which means I can talk however I only talk to very select few people, People who have gained my trust substantially.
I would Love more than anything to be able to talk to my audience but, Sadly, I am too crippled by my Elective Mutisim.
On top of these issues I am not a healthy typical person, I am in hospital quite often and so even IF I did talk to you guys my setup would be routinely disturbed and I'd be unable to make constant content.
I hope you are all mature enough to understand my situation without making fun or bullying but IF you do, Hey I understand this is the internet.
Please don't think any less of me because of it. I enjoy making these videos for everyone and I hope that no matter what others enjoy watching them, Even IF I can't commentate.
With all this said, PLEASE continue to support my channel like you all have in the past and I hope this doesn't lose me any viewers (Not like I had many to begin with) but I just wanted to be open with you and say the real truth as to why I never talk in my videos

AP WLOG #26 Ubiquiti UFiber GPON - ENGLISH SUBTITLES - Duration: 4:05.
Hi There! This is the AccessPoint WLOG #26 In this episode we'll introduce the
GPON system of Ubiquiti and it's dedicated management software, the UNMS.
Design Principles
Passive Optical Components
Central Active Components
Subscriber Active Components
Passive Optical Networks
Although the first GPON products in UBNTs portfolio appeared just recently,
the effort to make these simple and user friendly is obvious.
Currently there is only one central OLT model available
which is compact, 1U sized and has 8 PON ports, 2x SFP/SFP+ slots,
and also one management and one console port.
The unit comes with one PON module and one 220V PSU out of the box,
but extra PON modules and different types (230V AC, 38-54V DC) of PSUs are sold seperately.
The PON ports can connect 128 subscribers so the maximum client number of the OLT is 1024.
Contrary to the usual OLT design, the PON ports are not aligned in 45 degrees,
but in 90 degrees, so extra attention and rack space is required during install
because the connected optical cables will need more space.
There is only one ONU in UBNT's portfolio currently, which can only support bridge mode.
The good looking device has an LCD display and 1 PON port and 1 Gigabit Ethernet port
which is able to receive 24V passive PoE.
There is a special feature: by pressing the LCD, we can check various parameters
without accessing it's GUI.
The device can be mounted on wall and on tabletop as well.
It is automatically detected by the UNMS software during install,
where we can assign it to a subscriber group and add a location with a click.
Both the OLT and the ONU is manageable through web, SSH or the UNMS.
The UNMS can be installed very easily on UBUNTU and Debian,
by typing one line into the command prompt and the sofware is reachable through a web browser in seconds.
Like the similar looking UniFi controller, the UNMS also supports more sites
and supports central configuration, management and firmware updates,
and we can use multiple subscriber profiles.
The software is in a Beta stage currently but we did not encounter any errors
in the available features we have used during our test which was several days long.
The UNMS only supports bridge mode currently but this will surely change.
The system supports SNMP and is able to send email notifications
so we will be informed about all the problems and service outages through these
or can check the web GUI, where we will find these info on a seperate tab.
We can analyze this data on graphs, because both the OLT and ONU
is able to provide several informations like CPU/RAM usage or Ethernet traffic.
This was the AP WLOG #26 and this was the last episode of our PON series.
Please subscribe to our channel, good bye!

10 Cose che non sai sull'Alfa Romeo in Formula 1-What you don't know about alfa's experience in F1 - Duration: 2:46.
1. Alfa romeo can be considered one of the brands that contributed to the birth of the Formula 1 championship.
The first participation of the brand took place on the occasion of the first Formula 1 championship.
In 1950 Nino Farina won the inaugural edition of Formula One on an Alfa Romeo 158 supercharged, winning 6 Grand Prix at 7.
2. The next edition of the championship was also won by Alfa Romeo, with Juan Manuel Fangio on a 159, where he won 4 awards at 8.
3. In 1952, IRI, the public administration that owned Alfa Romeo, decided to withdraw the Formula 1 team from being unable to support the expensive planning of the new car model needed to compete with the Ferrari.
4. From 1961 to 1979, Alfa Romeo did not appear as a factory but only as a supplier of engines, equipping the Cooper, De Tomaso
and McLaren by Andrea De Adamich. However, these collaborations were not very lucky.
5. At this time, Alfa also collaborated with Bernie Ecclestone, owner of Brabham, who agreed with Alfa Romeo for the supply of engines from 1976 to 1979.
The engines, designed by Carlo Chiti, were 12-cylinder boxers and produced a power of 510 bhp versus the 465 bhp of the winning Cosworth DFV.
6. In 1979, Alfa Romeo returned to Formula 1 as a factory, still maintaining its role as a Brabham engine supplier. In the Grand Prix of Belgium in 1979 the Alfa Romeo 177 debutted, driven by Bruno Giacomelli.
7. Despite investment and engineering innovations, the track record was disappointing. Only two poles, three thirds and two seconds. Best placing, a sixth place among the factories in 1983.
8. From 1983 to 1988, Alfa Romeo participated in Formula 1 only as a motors supplier and technical support for the Osella team and Ligier.
Noteworthy is the first modern V10 engine made in 1985 for Ligier. After that, the alfa withdrew from the Formula 1 championship.
9. But the experience gained from alfa in the engines and, in particular, in the innovations introduced with the V10 alfa romeo did not end in forgetting.
In 1996, Ferrari introduced its first V10 engine, and in the team of engineers who made it there was also the ing. Pino d'Agostino, who had previously signed the Alfa Romeo V10.
10. In 2017, Sergio Marchionne announced the return of the Alfa Romeo brand in Formula 1 for the 2018 season as the main sponsor of the Sauber team,
with which the Italian brand will also carry on technological, technical and commercial cooperation, making available not only financing but also alfa technicians for the tuning of the car.

It is now time to leave the island of Mubur, and the little village of Palamak

DEBATE: Should We Limit Free Speech for Nazis? - Duration: 10:40.
[Brendan O'Neill] - Yeah, I want to defend free speech for Nazis because the idea that
you can have free speech, but not for Nazis is such a profound contradiction in terms,
that's not free speech, that's licensed speech, that's speech that you are licensed, that
is speech you are licensed to enjoy so long as you are not a Nazi, that's not freedom
of speech, that is the end of freedom of speech.
The second you push someone outside of freedom of speech, that's the end of freedom of speech.
I have to be really really honest here.
I'm disappointed to hear someone, even someone who has been sucked into the Kafkaesque censorship
of modern day campus make the case for silencing certain voices, and there are two basic reasons
why you have to have free speech for Nazis.
The first is: if you argue for any kind of speech control, the idea that it will just
be limited to people you don't like is crazy.
History tells you that's wrong.
It's never happened.
In Britain in the 1930s, there were lots of very positive, inspiring working-class uprisings
against fascists and some on the left, some ill-informed people on the left asked the
government to pass public order legislation to prevent fascists from gathering in public
and the government said, "Yes, okay, we'll do that."
Guess who it was used against, time and again, this public order legislation.
It was used against the left.
It was used against communists.
It was used against socialists whose marches were banned, whose gatherings were banned,
you are signing your own death warrant when you support censorship of anybody and that's
such a grave folly.
The second reason you should support free speech for Nazis is because the only way and
this is a cliche, but is a cliche because it's true.
The only way to challenge prejudice is to confront it head-on in the public realm and
destroy it with argument and reason.
There was an era in which Nazis were arrested under a kind of hate speech legislation.
They were punished, they were fined, that was in Weimar Germany,
in the 1920s and early 1930s.
Nazis were arrested for what they published, they were punished, they were fined for what
they published.
Do you know what they did as a consequence of that?
They milked it, they presented themselves as victims, they won more support among the
public and among the racist sections of the public by presenting themselves
as the victims of authority.
If you censor Nazis, you help Nazis, that's what history tells us.
[Tom Slater] - Thank you, Brendan.
Laura?
[Laura Kipnis] - Well I'll just respond briefly to that.
I mean, I understand all the points that you're making because I could make them myself, but
you're speaking of a very abstract level about ideas and theories and I guess I'm talking
about from the point of view of somebody on campus who works on campus and teaches and
has classrooms of students who are not snowflakes, but oftentimes have personal circumstances
that lead them to feel endangered by political circumstances or by threatening language the
first generation to go to school, people of color.
In the classes I teach, you have like one or two students of color facing like a roomful
of white kids, and I mean, those are real circumstances faced by real people, so I guess
that's partly the experience that I'm speaking from, but at the ideal level,
I applaud what you're saying.
At the reality level which is where I live, I think it's more complicated than that.
It's easy to come up with the pronouncements, I guess is what I would say to that.
[Angus Johnston] - Just want to say two things about freedom of speech.
One is that I think this question of does free speech and free debate work to defeat
fascists and that kind of thing, I think that's an empirical question, and I don't think it's
sufficient to say that in the Weimar Republic they persecuted Nazis, and then there were
Nazis, and so therefore you have to have free speech for Nazis, I think we need to do look
at it in a little bit more complexity.
I think one of the things that I would look at is the question of whether the tactics
of antifa are working right now and I think there is a case to be made that they are successfully
disrupting the organizing of a lot of these white supremacist groups, that the white supremacists
are having a hard time getting together and one of the things that they need is they need
to be gathering in public spaces, so that they, the Nazi-curious among us, can connect
up with them in real space in face-to-face and if we make it harder for them to do that,
then it is harder for them to recruit.
Now, is that worth it?
Does that mean that we shouldn't do it?
Well, that comes back to the second thing that I wanted to say, is that when we're talking
about free speech and protecting free speech, we need to be very, very clear on what we
mean because Milo Yiannopoulos does not have a right to speak at the UC Berkeley campus
and I say that as a 1st Amendment absolutist.
Richard Spencer does not have a 1st Amendment right to speak on any campus and again I say
that as a 1st Amendment absolutist.
The American campus is a place where, it's a community and it's an institution.
It is not a place where anybody has an equal right to speak.
Fascists are like vampires, they can't come through the door unless you invite them in.
They don't have a right to come onto your campus.
This is what Richard Spencer has done in the recent past, is he has scoured the nation
for campuses, public campuses that have a policy that say that anybody may speak, that's
not a 1st Amendment thing, that's a policy thing.
They have decided to open their doors to anybody who wants to spend the money to rent a room.
It's basically like renting a room at a Holiday Inn and they do this to raise funds.
I'll be done in a second, but they do this to raise funds.
They do it to be nice to people in the community who might not have a place for the knitting
club to meet and so what Richard Spencer does is he engages with this policy in a parasitical
way and what campuses are doing in many cases is they are changing that policy.
Texas A&M did it.
Richard Spencer wanted to come and they said,
"Okay, well, we're going to close our open-door policy."
Nothing to do with the 1st Amendment.
His 1st Amendment rights weren't violated there, but if you look at the media coverage
and the public debate around all these fascists on campus, you will see it framed in a very
unsophisticated way as if what were in play was the 1st Amendment
and that is very frequently not the case.
[Tom Slater] - Thank you, Angus.
[Brendan O'Neill] - I don't understand what's wrong with having principles especially on
freedom of speech.
You should have principles on freedom of speech and also there isn't this neat divide between
principles and practical everyday life, they inform each other, and that's the example
I gave, of in Britain, where we have public order legislation that can ban a march and
that came in as a consequence of the refusal of the left to defend free speech and freedom
of association for Nazis.
These have consequences.
If you give up your principles, it has devastating consequences in everyday life.
I think I disagree, but I think this is entirely about freedom of speech.
I think that is the issue in relation to all of this stuff.
I think freedom of speech is the foundational freedom, it's the freedom that makes everything
else possible, it's the freedom, the right to vote, the right to association, the right
to political organization, none of those make any sense or are even workable without freedom
of speech, without the right to say what you want to publish, what you want to distribute,
so the fact that there is a new left or students or society in general that is increasingly
uncomfortable with freedom of speech should concern us enormously and you know in relation
to antifa, antifa poses as this kind of radical lefty, kind of you know like the International
Brigades that went off to fight the fascists in Spain, do me a favor, the antifa is a bourgeois,
censorious, shrill anti-democratic, anti-working class.
For George Orwell, anti-fascism meant going to Spain and risking your life
to kill actual fascists.
For antifa, it means getting a bus into town and punching a working class Trump supporter
in the face, that's not the same thing.
Just the final point I would make is that if you want to see the danger of censorship,
just look at people like Richard Spencer and Milo Yiannopoulos, their fame, their power,
to the extent that they have it, their influence, the fact that you all know who they are, even
though they don't have any good ideas is entirely down to censorship.
The more you censor them, the more you chase them, the more you create this culture of
fear around them as if these two people could destroy America, the more you empower them.
Censorship empowers the people it censors, it disempowers the audience, ordinary people
who are deprived of the opportunity to challenge backward ideas.
Censorship benefits the censored in many instances.
Censorship is a real blow to ordinary people who don't share these views and would quite
like to hear and confront them.
Censorship is a disaster in every single instance, whether it's been enforced by the government
or bureaucrats at a university, whether it's formal or informal, whether it's state-led
or in the words of John Stuart Mill, the tyranny of wisdom, whichever area it's coming from,
it is a disaster and it will make life and politics worse.
