How to Write Short Story Cover Letters - Duration: 4:41.
Writing a cover letter to submit
with your short story to ezines or magazines
is different from writing a query letter
for a full length novel. Some rules still
apply to both though. In the cover letter you don't want
to boast about yourself or your writing and
make it seem like you think you're the "next best thing."
You also don't want to bash yourself or make it seem
like you have low confidence in yourself or in your writing.
(because then they will have low confidence in your writing)
You don't want to tell your life story or give them a
whole bunch of information about you because they're not interviewing you. They're looking at
your story. Address the cover letter by name if you can.
Go to the website of the magazine or ezine
you're looking to submit to and see if they have a list
of who works in what position. If you can't figure out
who exactly you're sending your story to
you can always just address it to "Dear Editor" or "Dear Editors."
Unlike a full length novel's query letter
you don't want to tell them all about your story.
Short stories are short. It doesn't
take long to read them and it won't take long for an acqusistions
editor to know everything they need. All of that comes
down to keeping your cover letter very brief.
Most of the time there's no need for them to be any
longer than 50 to 60 words.
Cover letters for short stories often times seem very
emotionless. It's just the bare facts that an editor needs.
And you do want to follow guidelines.
If you're submitting a short story look on they're website
what that magazine or ezine's specific guidelines are
and follow them to the "T."
We writers may not like to hear it, but honestly,
If you were an acquisitions editor going through dozens
or hundreds of submissions looking for the few
short stories you would pick, and you saw one that
didn't follow your submission guidelines,
You would assume that since the writer didn't care enough to check your guidelines,
They wouldn't care enough to write a good story or even
take the time to edit it before they sent it to you.
And honestly for acquisistion editors that's a very good
reason to reject a short story before they even read it.
And now, on to some actual formats.
For a general cover letter, if you don't see any specific
guidelines on the website,
what you want to do is to put your name, address,
email address, and telephone number at the top.
After that you can say "Dear Editor" or if you know the
editor's name you can insert that there.
In the body of your cover letter you can say something
to the effect of "Please
In the vein of keeping things short and sweet,
at the very end you just say something like
"Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, (your name)
But sometimes the submission guidelines are different
than what I just outlined.
I'll give you two examples from short stories I have
written and submitted to magazines, and both
of them are stories that were acquired and published.
For this magazine what they wanted in the cover letter
was your first and last name, your pen name if you
wrote under one, and your author website if you had one.
So I just said
As you can see that was very simple, to the point, no excess information.
This next example is very similar to the one I just gave,
but this issue had a theme of "Literary Re-imaginings."
They wanted classic stories reinvented with a magical twist.
In this one I said
And that's it. Cover letters for short stories are very...
short. Very basic.
If you stick to the point, and give the information they
need or require and omit anything else,
you'll be good to go.

Well then, let's jump right in.
English conversation is something that every English learner desires to be good at.
But in order to master it, you must first understand it.
There are three types of English conversations.
Once you understand them, you will become a master of English conversation.
The first type of English conversation is "Experience".
This type of conversation is focused on you discussing something that has happened to
you or something that you did.
There are three steps to follow in order to master this type of English conversation.
The three steps are, How to Answer, Follow up questions, and What to listen for.
First let's look at how to answer.
For this type of conversation, the most important thing to do is to give detailed information
about your own personal story or situation.
You can do this by including the following information.
Who, what, when, and where.
Next let's look at follow up questions.
The next thing you need to do is to ask a question.
This question gives the person you are talking to an opportunity to also tell their own experience.
For example, What about you?
What was your experience?
And Have you ever experienced that?
Finally, let's look at what to listen for.
In this part you need to pay attention to what they say.
Listen for something interesting about their experience.
So, you can listen for one key point and then ask them about it.
So, if we look at an example Experience Conversation, it would go like this.
Have you been to America?
Yes, I went with my family on a family vacation last year.
We went to Dallas, Texas.
What about you?
Yeah, I went to Paris 5 years ago with my sister.
Wow.
How was Paris?
The second type of English conversation is "Feelings".
This type of conversation is focused on you discussing your personal feelings.
This type also has the same three steps.
First let's look at how to answer.
For this type of conversation, you must answer using three steps.
The first step is to State the emotion.
The next step is to Give 3 reasons why.
And the third step is to Give 1 example experience.
Next let's look at follow up questions.
The next thing you need to do is to ask a question.
This question gives the person you are talking to an opportunity to also talk about their
feelings.
How about you?
Have you ever felt like that?
Finally, let's look at what to listen for.
Finally, you need to pay attention to what they say.
Listen for something specific about their feelings.

When do you feel happy?
I feel happy when I sing.

First, State your opinion clearly.
