Philip DeFranco: How To Make People Trust You - Duration: 10:03.
Philip DeFranco is probably the most trusted news person on YouTube
and in an era where mainstream news is suspect
and allegations of fake news fly even from the president's mouth...
You are fake news. Go ahead.
...that might make Philip DeFranco the most trusted news person in America.
In this video, I want to talk about what you can learn from Phily D.
in terms of generating that kind of trust and respect
even when you're talking about really controversial topics
and let me warn you, this isn't always going to be easy but as Phil says, let's just jump into it.
First is the issue of bias.
In news, many on the right and the left go to great lengths to portray themselves as unbiased
which is what you may do in your own life when you're trying to be persuasive
whether it's to win a political argument or just to get someone to go to the restaurant that you like.
Instead, look at what Phil does.
...FCC identified internet services as a common carrier.
...as a regulatory designation known as Title II which essentially means that it's a utility.
But now there's a new FCC chairman saying he wants to reverse the mistake of Title II and reclassify it as a Title I.
Before I move forward, just so you know where I stand on this,
I believe that it should remain Title II — that it should remain as a utility.
We need a free and open internet...
...not standing by a free and open internet — one that is seen by the FCC as a utility is pro-monopoly.
It's anti-business and it's disgusting to me that this is even a possibility.
But that's my opinion — back to the story of Pi makes this proposal...
Phil clearly delineates between the facts of the story and his own opinion.
Rather than hide his bias, he reveals it.
This might seem counterintuitive if you're trying to win someone to your side.
After all wouldn't knowing that you're biased make them more likely to resist?
Actually, no.
Because we are so overexposed to people who are trying to persuade us through secretive means
in ads, on the news, and in our daily lives, we know that people have biases and ulterior motives
and we're most suspicious of those people who claim not to have them.
So in revealing his own biases, Phil separates himself from a lot of the deception going on in the mainstream news
and actually makes people more able to trust him.
While we may not agree with his opinion, we can trust his facts.
...and that is you are going to disagree with but unlike most places you're going to consume news or consume opinion, it is okay here.
...going to be the facts, the different points of views, the different arguments from all sides, and then I will give my opinion and it is okay.
It's okay to disagree — we all don't live in one of two or three boxes.
But being trustworthy isn't just about reviewing your biases.
If you want people to truly trust you,
you're going to have to act against your own interests on occasion.
After all, if a waiter tells you to get the most expensive entree
and the most expensive bottle of wine, are you going to trust him? Probably not.
But if he recommends a cheaper bottle of wine and says that it's actually better,
do you trust him then? Almost definitely.
This is what Philip DeFranco does.
He acts against his own financial interest and it makes us trust him even more.
For starters, he hasn't stopped covering controversial topics
even though YouTube has hammered his ad revenue for it.
He also stopped all ads on what would become his second most popular video ever
because he didn't want to use this situation to make money off of child abuse which was a topic in that video.
Today's video, I've removed all advertising, I have rescheduled a sponsor that it was originally scheduled today
and that's because I don't want to talk about a story today and have it in any way seem like I'm exploiting the situation.
The situation deals with children and I know that one of the arguments is going to be that — you're trying to exploit my children.
I need to pull the advertising for this video because the story is far more important.
So that said, let's jump into it.
And when launching his own news channel,
Phil turned down offers from major networks in favor of a crowdfunded subscription model.
He may have made more money — in fact, likely would have — with those major networks
but he would have lost creative control.
I want to do it independently to make sure no corporate interests can manipulate and control how the news is presented — being forced to talk about a topic
or not being able to talk about a topic or having to push some sort of agenda — those strings can't be there if I truly want to create this.
And I say that having been offered to be a part of something much bigger
than what I'm doing now to build someone else's property
or to even go with my vision but still be able to be controlled.
So if you want a tip that sounds like it might hurt you but will ultimately give you a better life
and make you more trustworthy, it's just that.
Place honest expression over financial gain.
That might mean that when the cashier accidentally undercharges you,
you say something and pay the full price rather than pocketing the extra
or that when you have a client that your product just isn't the best fit for,
you tell them rather than selling it at any cost.
For me, it means that we don't use any fake countdown timers on Charisma University or any of the courses that we sell.
We don't say, "Limited to 25 people," and then sell 30 spots.
And when people ask if our courses are going to get their ex back, I tell them, "Honestly, probably not."
Yes, adopting this mentality might cost you in the short term
but if you build up a reputation of trustworthiness,
you'll find that it does come back to you plus it's just the right thing to do.
And this brings me to the main point of this video
which is — knowing your principles and living them.
Phil DeFranco is going to be an even bigger force to be reckoned with because he lives by his principles
whereas brands like Pepsi pay lip service to the ideas like "Join the conversation,"
Phil DeFranco actually cares about having a conversation and he responds to comments every single Friday
even going so far as to change his on mind on reporting that he done just a few days earlier —
kind of like you might expect someone to do if they were having a real conversation.
...Happiest Meal mentioned, "asking people only to shop at places owned and operated by minorities and women,
I don't agree with that at all.
Refusing to patronize a business because of their gender or race
is either sexist, racist, or both even if the gender is male and the race is white.
That's a really... that's a good argument.
That's actually a fantastic point that I didn't think of myself.
Off the top of my head, I don't know how to argue against that point because——
If this is something that you supported, let me know in the comments
how you think it's not the negative thing that was just thrown out there.
Phil also rips different news outlets for not doing the appropriate research.
For instance, when PewDiePie was accused ridiculously of being a Nazi sympathizer,
Phil bashed Wired for not taking the context of Felix's jokes into account.
Do your research. I'm a guy on the Internet — you're supposed to be a journalist.
... so for some of these mainstream outlets that are trying to cover this,
I want you to know, you're overextending, you're looking silly
and you are just adding to the conversation of why you should not be trusted.
Yes, there are racist organizations that do like PewDiePie
but also, if you go through those sites on your research, you'll find there are a lot of people that do not like him
and there are going to be more people that do not like him because he even issued somewhat of an apology
and much like you, but to a different capacity, they are seeing they want to see out of his content.
But to his credit, he didn't stop at just being critical of Wired.
He actually goes out of the way to research salacious claims that could make for great videos
but turned out to be false and that winds up giving him less amazing cover stories
but a much more trustworthy network.
...last thing I want to mention very briefly — I had a ton of people messaging me about this this morning.
People are messaging me that Mike Martin of Daddyofive was trying to raise money to sue me
over the videos where I talked about his videos this week.
...a link to GoFundMe. It says "...Philip DeFranco's false claims.
He's been spreading lies about us and putting our family through hell.
We're also considering taking Franco to court for all the pain and suffering and money he's causing us to lose."
Before you get your pitchforks, everything I've seen from this, it does not seem to be real.
I mean the page was created and on the page, it says it was created by Mike Martin
but it wasn't linked to a real Facebook page.
I haven't seen it promoted on any of their social media, that GoFundMe was also later deleted...
The main point as far as the GoFundMe and the legal stuff,
at this point, I have no reason to believe that it is real
and of course the last thing I would want would be people sharing fake news and just getting people riled up.
Just about everybody thinks that they live by principles but in truth,
very few do because there is a price to be paid when you live by your principles.
If you value dialogue, you need to be open to changing your mind
by talking with someone that you really might not like.
And if you value honesty, you need to tell the truth even when it sucks.
Most people, instead, adjust their principles to fit their desires.
They convince themselves that it's okay to lie in such and such a context or that
whatever group they disagree with doesn't really deserve to have the free speech protections
as was the case in the Berkeley protests where people like
Maile Ohye Innopolis and Ann Coulter were effectively barred from speaking due to violence.
Here's what Phil had to say about that situation.
...I do not like what Ann Coulter says — I think that she should have the right to say it.
Suppression of free speech is not a win whether it be against your friend or an enemy.
If someone has a flawed or horrible argument, let them air it out so the world can know how stupid they are.
I can never support people that cheer because someone's not able to say something
because they were literally scared for their lives.
Anyone who cheers on the suppression of free speech whether it be something you agree with or something you don't, you are no friend of mine.
Again, the point is that living in a principled way has a cost.
So I encourage you right now to think about the principles that you'd like to live by, the person you'd like to be,
and ask yourself what it is going to cost you to make those principles real.
If you value honesty, what difficult truths do you need to tell?
If you value having an open dialogue, who have you been shutting out you should probably converse with?
And if you value self-expression, what parts of your personality have you been hiding in order to fit in?
If you could pay the cost of living by your principles,
you immediately separate yourself from the pack just like Phil DeFranco has done in the news world
and even though it's tough and even though it might cost you and likely will cost you
in the short term, the principled person that you become is worth it.

Shootings, terrorist attacks, natural disasters, end-of-the-world predictions � even political
coverage of current events � can be upsetting news for adults, not to mention kids.
In our 24/7 news world, it�s become nearly impossible to shield kids from distressing
current events.
According to Common Sense Media�s report, News and America�s Kids: How Young People
Perceive and Are Impacted by the News, kids get their news from family, friends, teachers,
and of course the internet.
Kids like to check their social media for shareable videos, posts, blogs, feeds, and
alerts.
But the news can stress them out.
Since much of this content comes from sites that are designed for adult audiences, what
your kids see, hear, or read might not always be age-appropriate.
Making things even more challenging is the fact that many kids are getting this information
directly on their phones and laptops.
Often parents aren�t around to immediately help their kids make sense of horrendous situations.
The bottom line is that young kids simply don�t have the ability to understand news
events in context, much less know whether or not a source of information is credible.
And though older teens are better able to understand current events, even they face
challenges when it comes to sifting fact from opinion � or misinformation.
No matter how old your kids are, threatening or upsetting news can affect them emotionally.
Many can feel worried, frightened, angry, or even guilty.
And these anxious feelings can last long after the news event is over.
So what can you do as a parent to help your kids deal with all this information?
TIPS FOR ALL KIDS Consider your own reactions.
Your kids will look to the way you handle the news to determine their own approach.
If you stay calm and rational, they will, too.
Take action.
Depending on the issue and kids� ages, families can find ways to help those affected by the
news.
Kids can write postcards to politicians expressing their opinions; families can attend meetings
or protests; kids can help assemble care packages or donate a portion of their allowance to
a rescue/humanitarian effort.
Check out websites that help kids do good.
TIPS FOR KIDS UNDER 7 Keep the news away.
Turn off the TV and radio news at the top of the hour and half hour.
Read the newspaper out of range of young eyes that can be frightened by the pictures (kids
may respond strongly to pictures of other kids in jeopardy).
Preschool kids don�t need to see or hear about something that will only scare them
silly, especially because they can easily confuse facts with fantasies or fears.
Stress that your family is safe.
At this age, kids are most concerned with your safety and separation from you.
Try not to minimize or discount their concerns and fears, but reassure them by explaining
all the protective measures that exist to keep them safe.
If the news event happened far away, you can use the distance to reassure kids.
For kids who live in areas where crime and violence is a very real threat, any news account
of violence may trigger extra fear.
If that happens, share a few age-appropriate tips for staying and feeling safe (being with
an adult, keeping away from any police activity).
Be together.
Though it�s important to listen and not belittle their fears, distraction and physical
comfort can go a long way.
Snuggling up and watching something cheery or doing something fun together may be more
effective than logical explanations about probabilities.
TIPS FOR KIDS 8�12 Carefully consider your child�s maturity
and temperament.
Many kids can handle a discussion of threatening events, but if your kids tend toward the sensitive
side, be sure to keep them away from the TV news; repetitive images and stories can make
dangers appear greater, more prevalent, and closer to home.
Be available for questions and conversation.
At this age, many kids will see the morality of events in stark black-and-white terms and
are in the process of developing their moral beliefs.
You may have to explain the basics of prejudice, bias, and civil and religious strife.
But be careful about making generalizations, since kids will take what you say to the bank.
This is a good time to ask them what they know, since they�ll probably have gotten
their information from friends, and you may have to correct facts.
Talk about � and filter � news coverage.
You might explain that even news programs compete for viewers, which sometimes affects
content decisions.
If you let your kids use the Internet, go online with them.
Some of the pictures posted are simply grisly.
Monitor where your kids are going, and set your URLs to open to non-news-based portals.
TIPS FOR TEENS Check in.
Since, in many instances, teens will have absorbed the news independently of you, talking
with them can offer great insights into their developing politics and their senses of justice
and morality.
It will also help you get a sense of what they already know or have learned about the
situation from their own social networks.
It will also give you the opportunity to throw your own insights into the mix (just don�t
dismiss theirs, since that will shut down the conversation immediately).
Let teens express themselves.
Many teens will feel passionately about events and may even personalize them if someone they
know has been directly affected.
They�ll also probably be aware that their own lives could be affected by violence.
Try to address their concerns without dismissing or minimizing them.
If you disagree with media portrayals, explain why so your teens can separate the mediums
through which they absorb news from the messages conveyed.

In 2001, my organization, it is ICRP (Indonesian Conference on Religion and Peace),
it is a cross-religion organization that speaks for peaceful for all religions.
It means we want every religion can only represent peaceful without violence.
In 2001, we did judicial review to Constitutional Court to erase those articles about desecration of religion.
Because, those articles are not strong enough and they can be applied to anybody for manipulative purpose.
In Mr. Ahok's case, after it took long process in the court, we saw no evidence in blasphemy context.
So I think that what happened to Mr. Ahok, it has some political reasons underneath.
As for me, in this country, it is not law that rules the game. It is politics,
and what's worse, politics always comes in the same package with religion. It's terrible.
We don't need this to be happened as this country has been built with Pancasila (Indonesian state philosophy)
Pancasila is the ideology of this country,
and the first principle states 'Believe in One and Only God', and it is applied to all religions in the country.
So with this first principle, we can use religion as an ethical value in running life as an Indonesian people.
It's understandable to disagree with the idea to separate religion from politics,
we can't just do that because we live in a religious society.
Now the thing is, the kind of 'religion' that can be applied properly here,
it is the one that comes with a value of universal humanity.
After the first principle, the next one is "Just and Civilized Humanity"
and don't forget if those two principles come on the same line.
"Just and Civilized Humanity" means that as a religious nation, we always come with the value of humanity,
which is equal and civilized.
I think it is all the same for every religion, including Islam.
Islam speaks loudly about the value of humanizing people.
The final purpose of one religion is to humanize people.
We can't just say "oh this religion needs to be empowered". First, does this religion humanize us?
Still, my principal things come in this order, after the second principle,
the third one is about "The Unity of Indonesia."
We must not separate this country between those from the east or west.
We live in the same country and there can't be any discrimination among us, for any reason.
In Ahok's case, we can't just say "Oh, he's a Christian". No. We have to see him as an Indonesian people,
who has the equal rights just like the others and we can't treat him discriminatively.
The fourth principle, it talks about our people. It is about democracy actually.
We have to respect all opinions that surround us but it doesn't mean the major voice will always be the winner.
Still, we need constitution for justice.
In Ahok's case for instance. there is a judiciary,
but judges there didn't make decision based on facts that has been shown in the court.
It really is a shocking thing for me.
Because, if we trace all witnesses that are invited to the court,
around 80% of them said there was no such thing as religion blasphemy.
So, then we assumed that Mr. Ahok could be released,
but instead, the judge decided something different from those available evidences.
This is where the fifth principle needs to play its role,
"Social Justice for The Whole of The People of Indonesia"
Where is this social justice?
This social justice must be applied to all Indonesian people,
without making any differences on religion, culture, or anything.
Everybody has to get the same complete protection from the country.

Then you need this type of paper called FOAM CORE.
It's two pieces of paper with some kind of Styrofoam in the middle.
You need a pencil.
You need a Lego Wheel and a plastic bar.
So first you put the wheel in the middle and then you put the 3 Yo-Kai Watch medals around it like a star
Try to have them equal and then trace it with the pencil.
Also trace the wheel.
Get a grown-up to cut it out with an X-Acto Knife.
This is what it will look like.
Now you carefully place everything into place.
Then you put the medals into the holes.
Then put the bar into the wheel.

And in this video I will be doing a review of the Ole Henrikson Power Peel.
I did a first impression of this peel, but some of the footage is not that great.
So therefore I am going to try to combine the first impression and the review together.
So I will be inserting some of that footage from the first impression in this video.
And basically what the power peel is... it is an at home professional strength microdermabrasionAHA
peel system.Umm, supposedly after just one use skin is instantly smoother and more radiant.
Fine lines and pores appear minimized and a youthful glowing complexion is revealed.
There are three steps.
If you can see here.
The first step is the almond polish facial scrub.
And it says to apply the almond polish facial scrub to a clean damp face.
Gently massage in a circular, upward motion for 1-2 minutes to buff away dead skin cells.
Rinse using warm water and the complexion sponge.
Pat skin dry.
Step two is here, which is the lemon strip flash peel.
It says apply lemon strip flash peel evenly across a dry face.
A slight tingling sensation may occur.
Leave on for 2 minutes.
Do not rinse.
Follow with step 3.
And step 3 is the chamomile comfort mask.
It says after 2 minutes, apply chamomile comfort mask directly over lemon strip and blend evenly
across face.
Leave on for 10-15 minutes.
Rinse using warm water and the complexion sponges.
For optimal results, follow with Ole Henrikson moisturizer or facial oil.
It says that you can use this twice monthly and it is ideal for all skin types.
After I used this facial peel for the first time, I did notice that my skin did feel,
and to me, it looked smoother and it looked more -- uh, what's the word?
It looked brighter and it had a dewy look to it, which is what I thought was a dewy
look.
And I thought it looked very good because I ended up, on the next day, recording a video
without any make-up besides some concealer.
And I think my face looked pretty good on that video.
But I'm guessing that my skin was on the brink of being oily.
But I still loved it.
My skin started to become more oily, and I did start to get white heads on my face.
Um, I didn't get them all over, but I did have them in certain spots.
I definitely had one here, I had a couple on my chin, and one like in this area.
And I'm pretty sure that that came from the power peel because that's the only thing that
I changed in my routine.
It became even more oily after the second time that I used this power peel.
And the reason why I know that it was more oily, because my skin has been doing pretty
good as far as oil production like when I wake up in the morning I had not been oily.
But after using this power peel, I would wake up and my face would be like very oily.
And throughout the day it would become more oily.
And I had not been used to that.
Even my husband noticed and he was like what's that on your face.
And I'm like it's oil.
Hahaha.
So yea... it did make my skin a lot more oily and I do have oily skin.
After the first time I did not see a huge difference.
And what I originally was going to do, is try to use this for four weeks straight.
but I could not bring myself to do it after the second time noticing how oily my skin
is.
I hate to have oily skin because it just looks terrible.
So I decided not to continue with the four week test, and I only did it for two weeks.
Now I have tried a sample of the lemon strip peel alone, and I do definitely like the lemon
strip peel.
So I may just go back to using the lemon strip peel.
I think the almond facial scrub may have been too much for my face.
Umm.
Usually when I start doing too much to face I start developing a lot more oil than what
I usually do.
The chamomile comfort mask probably didn't do much to help it either because it probably
had oil in it or something.
I don't know if it has oil in it, but they did not do well for my face.
So with that, I have a couple more power peels in this box, and I will more than likely do
a giveaway to get rid of these instead of returning it to the store.
