CUNY TV Presents ABNY: Martha E. Pollack, President, Cornell University - Duration: 29:18.

>>> GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE.

I HOPE EVERYONE HAD A GREAT

HOLIDAY AND A WONDERFUL SUMMER

AND SEEING EVERYONE HERE THIS

MORNING MAKES ME FEEL LIKE WE'RE

BACK IN SESSION ALSO NOW LOOKING

TO THE FUTURE AND THE FORMAL

OPEN OF THE NEW CORNELL TECH

CAMPUS NEXT WEEK.

THERE'S A WELCOME EDITION TO OUR

CITY'S EXPANDING TECH ECOSYSTEM,

SCIENCE TECH AND INNOVATION

CONTINUES TO PLAY A GREATER PART

OF NEW YORK CITY'S ECONOMY, NOT

ONLY ON RANDALL'S ISLAND BUT ALL

OVER MANHATTAN, BROOKLYN, QUEENS

AND THE BRONX.

AND WE LOOK ACROSS THE RIVER, I

HAD ON THIS BEAUTIFUL MORNING

WHICH IT'S TURNED OUT TO BE AND

I CAN THINK OF NO BETTER SETTING

TO WELCOME CORNELL UNIVERSITY'S

NEW PRESIDENT MARTHA POLLACK TO

ABNY COMMUNITY.

TO INTRODUCE PRESIDENT POLLACK I

WANT TO INTRODUCE THE CHAIRMAN

OF RELATED COMPANIES STEVE ROSS.

STEVE HAS PLAYED A CRITICAL ROLE

IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CORNELL

TECH.

NOT ONLY IS HE ON THE BOARD OF

OVERSEERS BUT HE'S MADE A

SIGNIFICANT MARK ON THE CAMPUS.

AS YOU LOOK AT ROOSEVELT ISLAND,

A 26 STORY HIGH RISE STANDS OUT

AND DESERVEDLY SO.

IT'S THE WORLD'S TALLEST PASSIVE

HOUSE RESIDENTIAL BUILDING

DEVELOPED BY RELATED

COMPANIES IN HUDSON.

THIS BUILDING IS A SYMBOL OF

WHAT CORNELL TECH STANDS FOR,

INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, PLEASE

WELCOME CHAIRMAN OF RELATED

STEVE ROSS.

[ APPLAUSE ]

>>> THANK YOU, BILL.

MARTHA, THIS IS FOR YOU.

ANY WAY, THAT WAS UNIVERSITY

MICHIGAN FIGHT SONG.

I'M SOMEWHAT ASSOCIATED WITH

MICHIGAN AND IT'S A REAL

PLEASURE TO BE WORKING WITH THEM

BUT IT WAS WHERE I REALLY MET

MARTHA POLLACK AND I'M HONORED

TO BE ABLE TO INTRODUCE MARTHA.

I MET MARTHA MANY YEARS AGO

PRIOR BEFORE SHE WAS

EVEN PROVOST AT

THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN.

WE SAT NEXT TO EACH OTHER AT

NUMEROUS MEETINGS AND LISTENED

TO HER PRESENTATIONS AND I

THINK YOU ALWAYS CAME AWAY FROM

THAT KNOWING WHO IS THE SMARTEST

PERSON IN THE ROOM WAS.

I THINK PEOPLE HERE USING HER

KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNOLOGY

BEING A COMPUTER SCIENTIST AND

KNOWLEDGE IN ARTIFICIAL

INTELLIGENCE, TOGETHER WITH HER

COMPASSION FOR STUDENTS AND

LEARNING, SHE WAS JUST A GREAT

PROVOST AND I SAT THERE THROUGH

THE YEARS AND LISTENED TO HER

AND HAVING SPOKEN WITH HER IN

BETWEEN AND LEARNED AN AWFUL

LOT, I COULDN'T HELP BUT WONDER

THAT KNOWING THE MICHIGAN WAS

A PLACE WHERE MANY COLLEGE

PRESIDENTS HAVE COME FROM, IT

WAS JUST A QUESTION OF HOW LONG

WOULD MARTHA BE ABLE TO STAY AT

THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

BEFORE SHE WAS OFFERED A GREAT

UNIVERSITY AND THAT SHE WAS AND

IT WAS REALLY MICHIGAN'S LOSS

AND CORNELL'S GAIN AS WELL AS

NEW YORK CITY.

AND I THINK SHE WILL BRING GREAT

THINGS TO CORNELL BUT JUST AS

IMPORTANT SHE'S GOING TO BE ONE

OF THE MOST MAJOR LEADERS HERE

IN NEW YORK BECAUSE THERE'S NO

ONE REALLY MORE QUALIFIED TO

LEAD BOTH CORNELL IN THE FUTURE

AS WELL AS LAUNCH CORNELL TECH.

CORNELL TECH IS REALLY I THINK

NEXT WEEK WE HAVE OUR OPENING OF

THE CAMPUS ON ROOSEVELT ISLAND

AND WHAT THAT UNIVERSITY AND

CORNELL TECH WILL MEAN TO THE

FUTURE OF NEW YORK CITY I THINK

IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO ALL OF

US.

TECH AS WE ALL KNOW IS WHERE THE

WORLD IS GOING AND IF YOU'RE NOT

EMBRACING TECH, YOU'RE NOT

REALLY GOING TO GROW AS A CITY

AND NEW YORK CERTAINLY HAS

EMBRACED IT AND I THINK THAT THE

IDEA OF CORNELL TECH COMING HERE

AND WHAT IT WILL DO IN EDUCATING

STUDENTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

IN THE NEW WAYS OF REALLY DOING

THINGS AND TAKING A TOTAL

DIFFERENT APPROACH TO EDUCATION,

THERE'S NOBODY BETTER THAT CAN

LEAD THE WAY THAN MARTHA POLLACK

AND I THINK THAT WILL ALSO LEAD

THE WAY FOR THE CONTINUOUS

OF NEW YORK IS GROWING ECONOMY

AND WHEN YOU LOOK AT SILICON

VALLEY AND YOU SEE WHAT STANFORD

HAS DONE FOR THAT WHOLE AREA AND

KNOWING THAT TECHNOLOGY IS

TAKING SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART IN

OUR LIVES AND IN BUSINESS THAT I

THINK IT CAN DO THE SAME THING

TO NEW YORK TO BE THE GREATEST

CITY IN THE WORLD.

SO I'M REALLY THRILLED THAT

CORNELL WAS ABLE TO GET MARTHA

AS THE 14th PRESIDENT OF

CORNELL.

I CONGRATULATE YOU ON THAT AND

REALLY I THINK NEW YORK IS

REALLY GOING TO BENEFIT BY HER

AND I JUST HOPE -- I KNOW SHE

STILL HAS A LITTLE BIT OF

WOLVERINE LEFT IN HER.

MARTHA, IT'S A REAL PLEASURE TO

INTRODUCE YOU AND THRILLED THAT

YOU'RE HERE.

[ APPLAUSE ]

>> THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR VISIONARY

LEADERSHIP IN NEW YORK CITY AND

FOR YOUR SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF

THE CORNELL TECH BOARD OF

OVERSEERS, WE'RE JUST SO PLEASED

TO HAVE YOU AS PART OF OUR TEAM

THERE AND AS WE LOOK TO ENHANCE

THIS GREAT CITY THROUGH AN

INNOVATIVE GRADUATE EDUCATION,

YOUR WORK ACROSS NEW YORK

INSPIRES US.

UNDER YOUR LEADERSHIP

THE RELATED COMPANIES HAVE

BECOME A GLOBAL LEADER IN REAL

ESTATE INNOVATION AND A DOMINANT

FORCE IN NEW YORK.

ON THE WEST SIDE, HUDSON YARD IS

PROVIDING A MODEL FOR THE

CITY OF THE FUTURE.

I'M GOING TO HAVE TO START

PUMPING MY HAND.

AND NOW THERE'S THIS NEW CORNELL

TECH CAMPUS WHICH YOU HELPED US

BUILD WITH RESIDENTIAL BUILDING

THAT IS AMONG THE WORLD'S MOST

SUSTAINABLE.

I'M A TENANT IN THAT BUILDING

WHEN I'M IN NEW YORK CITY, I

STAYED THERE LAST NIGHT.

I CAN TELL YOU IT'S AMAZING.

IT'S ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

SO THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO,

STEVE, FOR NEW YORK AND CORNELL.

I ALSO WANT TO THANK -- I DON'T

KNOW WHO IN THIS ROOM WAS

INVOLVED IN GETTING THE FERRY UP

AND RUNNING BUT I TOOK THE FERRY

DOWN FROM ROOSEVELT ISLAND THIS

MORNING, FABULOUS, JUST A

WONDERFUL WAY TO GET AROUND SO

THANK YOU TO WHOEVER PUT THAT

INTO PLACE.

I ALSO WANT TO THANK BILL RUDIN,

ANGELA PINSKY AND ABNY FOR

HAVING ME HERE THIS MORNING.

EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT SPEAKING

AT ABNY IS A RIGHT OF PASSAGE

AND I TRULY AM HONORED TO BE

HERE WITH ALL OF YOU TODAY.

I'LL TALK TODAY ABOUT CORNELLS

IMPACT ON SO MUCH OF WHAT

MAKES NEW YORK SPECIAL.

IT REALLY STARTS WITH THE MORE

THAN 50,000 CORNELL ALUMNI WHO

LIVE IN THE REGION.

CAN I ASK ALL THE CORNELLIONS

HERE TO STAND UP.

OKAY.

WOW. RIGHT.

[ APPLAUSE ]

>>> ALL CORNELL PARENTS STAND

UP.

[ APPLAUSE ]

>> CORNELL ALUMNI ARE LEADERS IN

PUBLIC SERVICE, TECH, FASHION,

THE LIST GOES ON AND ON AND I'VE

ALREADY DISCOVERED THAT YOU

REALLY CAN'T GO FAR WALKING

AROUND THIS CITY WITHOUT RUNNING

INTO ONE.

SO DID YOU KNOW THAT THE EMPIRE

STATE BUILDING WAS DESIGNED AND

BUILT IN 1931 BY THE FIRM OF

SHREVE, LAMB AND HARMON?

ONE OF WHOSE PRINCIPLES WAS A

CORNELLION RH SHREEF AND THE

TONY AWARD WINNING PLAY,

INDECENT, IT WAS WRITTEN BY A

CORNELLION, PULITZER PRIZE

WINNER, PAULA VOGEL.

AND NEW YORK CITY'S FAVORITE

CASUAL BURGER JOINT, SHAKE

SHACK, IS ALSO LED BY A

CORNELLION.

BUT, OF COURSE CORNELL'S

PRESENCE IN NEW YORK CITY IS

ABOUT INSTITUTIONS AS MUCH

AS INDIVIDUALS.

WHILE CORNELL MEDICINE A GLOBAL

LEADER IN PATIENT CARE, SCIENCE

DISCOVERY AND EDUCATION OF

FUTURE PHYSICIANS HAS BEEN IN

NEW YORK CITY FOR MORE THAN 100

YEARS, WE TREATED MORE THAN

2.9 MILLION PATIENTS LAST YEAR

AND BROUGHT MORE THAN

$240 MILLION WORTH OF RESEARCH

FUNDING TO NEW YORK.

ALREADY WHILE CORNELL AND

CORNELL TECH ARE COLLABORATING

ON EXCITING NEW HEALTH TECH

INITIATIVES THAT WOULDN'T HAVE

BEEN POSSIBLE BEFORE.

OUR PHYSICAL FOOTPRINT IN THE

CITY ALSO INCLUDES PROGRAMS FROM

THE COLLEGES OF ART,

ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING, THE

SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL AND LABOR

RELATIONS, THE COLLEGE OF

ENGINEERING, CORNELL'S LAW

SCHOOL, THE FACULTY OF COMPUTING

AND INFORMATION SCIENCE AND

CORNELL SC JOHNSON COLLEGE OF

BUSINESS ALONG WITH NUMEROUS

ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH PROGRAMS

OFFERED BY REALLY PROGRAMS

ACROSS ITHACA.

THIS PROVES THAT 225 MILE

SEPARATION IS REALLY NOTHING FOR

CORNELLIONS WHO ARE ALWAYS

INTREPID. CORNELL COOPERATIVE

EXTENTION IN NEW YORK CITY

IS ACTIVE IN THE BRONX,

BROOKLYN, MANHATTAN

QUEENS AND STATEN ISLAND.

WITH A GOAL TO MEET NEW YORKERS

IN THEIR HOMES,

CHURCHES, SCHOOLS AND OTHER

COMMUNITY SPACES OUR EXTENSION

PROGRAMS SUPPORT TENS OF

THOUSANDS OF NEW YORKERS

ANNUALLY IN A NEIGHBORHOOD BY

NEIGHBORHOOD AND PERSON BY

PERSON DEMONSTRATION OF

CORNELL'S LAND GRANT MISSION.

WHILE NUTRITION EDUCATION

PROGRAMS BOAST THE BROADEST

REACH OUR COLLECTIVE IMPACT

INCLUDES EVIDENCE BASED

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

PROGRAMS IN 4H YOUTH

DEVELOPMENT, PARENTING,

ENERGY CONSERVATIONS AND STEM

EDUCATION.

FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS CORNELL

HAS BEEN INTEGRATED IN THE

FABRIC OF NEW YORK CITY

DELIVERING RESEARCH BASED

SOLUTIONS THAT ENHANCE DIVERSE

INDUSTRIES, IMPROVING THE LIVES

OF MILLIONS WHILE TRANSFORMING

THE CITY'S LANDSCAPE AND

NURTURING THE TALENTED PEOPLE

FROM ACROSS A WIDE SPECTRUM OF

FIELDS WHO TOGETHER MAKE

NEW YORK THE GREATEST CITY IN

THE WORLD.

I GREW UP IN CONNECTICUT.

MY DAD WORKED IN MANHATTAN.

MY RELATIVES WERE IN BROOKLYN.

THIS REALLY IS THE GREATEST CITY

IN THE WORLD.

THE CORNELL STORY GOES BACK TO

THE MID-19th CENTURY, TO

EZRA CORNELL, THE FARMER

MECHANIC AND ANDREW DIXON WHITE

THE HISTORY PROFESSOR WHO

TOGETHER CREATED CORNELL.

THE CORNELL ALUMNI IN THE

AUDIENCE WILL KNOW THE STORY OF

TWO VERY DIFFERENT MEN WHO WHILE

SERVING TOGETHER AS NEW YORK

STATE SENATORS SAW IN THE MORAL

ACT OF 1862 THE FEDERAL STATUTE

THAT ESTABLISHED LAND GRANT

COLLEGES AN OPPORTUNITY TO

CREATE NOT JUST A NEW COLLEGE

BUT A NEW KIND OF COLLEGE, A

COLLEGE THAT ONCE COMMITTED TO

LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCE AND TO

DEVELOPING TALENT IN A WIDE

RANGE OF PROFESSIONAL FIELDS.

A COLLEGE THAT WOULD WELCOME

PEOPLE OF ALL BACKGROUNDS,

WITHOUT REGARD TO RACE, GENDER,

RELIGION OR NATIONAL ORIGIN,

WE STILL STAND FOR THAT TODAY.

AND A COLLEGE WHOSE GRADUATES,

LIKE CORNELL ITSELF, WOULD

CONTRIBUTE TO THE BETTERMENT OF

SOCIETY.

SO WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY AROSE IN

2010 TO COMPETE FOR A SECOND

LAND GRANT HERE IN MANHATTAN,

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, CORNELL

UNIVERSITY SEIZED IT FOR ONCE IN

A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD

ON OUR FOUNDING VISION WHILE

HAVING A TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT

ON NEW YORK CITY'S FUTURE.

AND NEXT WEDNESDAY, JOINED BY

ELECTED OFFICIALS, BY MICHAEL

BLOOMBERG AND ACADEMIC PARTNER,

ISRAEL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY,

ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROJECTS

CORNELL HAS EVER UNDERTAKEN WILL

OFFICIALLY OPEN ON ROOSEVELT

ISLAND, CORNELL TECH, THE FIRST

OF ITS KIND CAMPUS BUILT FOR THE

DIGITAL AGE.

OUR JOURNEY TO ROOSEVELT ISLAND

BEGAN SEVEN YEARS AGO WHEN THE

BLOOMBERG ADMINISTRATION ISSUED

A CHALLENGE TO TOP INSTITUTIONS

WORLDWIDE TO DEVELOP AN APPLIED

SCIENCES CAMPUS ON CITY OWNED

LAND WITH A SEED INVESTMENT OF

$100 MILLION.

WE PARTNERED WITH THE UNIVERSITY

BEHIND ISRAEL'S REMARKABLE

START-UP ECONOMY AND WE WON THE

COMPETITION IN 2011.

CORNELL TECH PRESENTED AN

OPPORTUNITY THAT IS ALMOST

UNHEARD OF TODAY.

TO BUILD A NEW TYPE OF ACADEMIC

PROGRAM AND A NEW TYPE OF CAMPUS

FROM SCRATCH.

THANKS TO THE EXTRAORDINARY

INGENUITY OF FORMER MAYOR

MICHAEL BLOOMBERG AND THE

TERRIFIC PARTNERSHIPS WITH

GOVERNOR CUOMO

AND MAYOR de BLASIO, WE'VE BEEN

BUSY BUILDING, BUILDING AN

ACADEMIC PROGRAM, AND BUILDING A

PHYSICAL CAMPUS ON ROOSEVELT

ISLAND.

WHAT DID WE COME UP WITH AND HOW

IS IT DIFFERENT?

IT STARTS WITH OUR APPROACH

WHICH BUILDS ON WHAT IS BEST

ABOUT THE START-UP CULTURE.

WE SAID FROM THE BEGINNING THAT

WE WOULD TAKE CHANCES AT CORNELL

TECH, THAT WE WOULDN'T BE AFRAID

TO FAIL OR TO SCRAP SOMETHING

THAT WASN'T WORKING.

NOW I'M A COMMUTER SCIENTIST BY

TRAINING AND IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

WE'RE TOLD TO BUILD THINGS

THROUGH WHAT WE CALL

ITERATIVE DESIGN.

YOU START BY CREATING A SYSTEM

THAT REPRESENTS APPROXIMATE

SOLUTION TO A PROBLEM, TEST IT

IN THE REAL WORLD, THEN YOU

REFINE IT AND REPEAT THE CYCLE

AND THAT'S WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING

AT CORNELL TECH.

AND IT'S REINVENTING GRADUATE

EDUCATION FOR THE FIRST TIME IN

THREE GENERATIONS.

LET ME A LITTLE BIT SPECIFIC

ABOUT WHAT I MEAN BY THAT.

FIRST, AT CORNELL TECH THERE ARE

NO DISCIPLINARY SILOS.

EVERY ONE OF OUR MASTER STUDENTS

SPENDS ABOUT A THIRD OF THEIR

TIME IN A STUDIO PROGRAM

CREATING PRODUCTS AND SOLVING

PROBLEMS, ENGINEERING STUDENTS

WITH BUSINESS STUDENTS WITH LAW

STUDENTS WITH COMPUTING AND

INFORMATION SCIENCE STUDENTS.

IT'S TRUE THAT THE FASTEST WAY

TO FIND A SOLUTION TO A PROBLEM

IS TO BRING TOGETHER A GROUP OF

LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE BUT THE ONLY

WAY TO GET TO THE BEST SOLUTION

IS TO GATHER A DIVERSE SET OF

VOICES REPRESENTING A VARIETY OF

BACKGROUNDS AND DISCIPLINES.

CORNELL AND DIXON WHITE KNEW

THAT AND WE FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT

TODAY.

SECOND EXAMPLE, ACADEMIA AND

INDUSTRY GO TOGETHER THERE HAND

IN HAND.

WE'RE ASSEMBLING SOME OF THE

FINEST RESEARCH TEAMS IN THE

WORLD BUT I HAVE TO TELL YOU

WHAT EXCITES ME IS THAT THEIR

RESEARCH WILL BE PUT TO USE

IMMEDIATELY AND IN THE REAL

WORLD.

COMPANIES ARE A PERMANENT PART

OF THE TECH CAMPUS, INSURING

COLLABORATION THAT ACCELERATES

COMMERCIAL INNOVATION.

OUR STUDENTS AND RESEARCHERS

WILL INTERACT WITH START-UPS,

ENTREPRENEURS, INVESTORS AND

ESTABLISHED COMPANIES ALL IN

PURSUIT OF COMMERCIAL

INNOVATION.

FOR SOME THIS HAS BEEN

CONTROVERSIAL, BUT IT'S

ATTENTION THAT WE'VE EMBRACED

AND WE'VE MADE IT A CENTRAL

FEATURE OF CORNELL TECH.

AND THIRD, THE CAMPUS IS

DESIGNED TO BE OPEN.

THE BLOOMBERG CENTER HAS NO

OFFICES.

PROFESSORS AND Ph.D. STUDENTS

WORK IN OPEN FLOOR PLANS AND

SMALL BREAKOUT ROOMS.

THIS SETUP ENCOURAGES INTENSIVE

COLLABORATION AND DISCOVERY.

IT'S A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM FOR

THOSE OF US WHO COME FROM

ACADEMIA.

I SEE DEBORAH LAUGHING THERE.

YOU CAN'T IMAGINE GOING TO A

FACULTY MEMBER AND SAYING, NO

YOU'RE NOT GOING TO HAVE AN

OFFICE, YOU'RE GOING TO BE IN AN

OPEN FLOOR PLAN AND YET IT'S

WORKED.

I WAS TAKING SOME PEOPLE ON A

TOUR THERE RECENTLY, WHERE DO

YOUR BOOKS GO?

THIS IS INNOVATIVE.

IT'S INNOVATIVE IN SO MANY WAYS.

IT'S DESIGNED FOR EXAMPLE, AS

ONE OF THE MOST SUSTAINABLE IN

THE WORLD BUT I'M MOST PROUD OF

ITS OPENNESS.

WE'VE CREATED A CAMPUS THAT'S

NOT ONLY OPEN INTERNALLY BUT

EXTERNALLY.

IT'S ACCESSIBLE TO ALL

NEW YORKERS AND ESPECIALLY TO

OUR ROOSEVELT ISLAND NEIGHBORS

WITH 2 1/2 ACRES OF OPEN SPACE,

NO GATES, NO WALLS AND NO

BARRIERS.

THE RESULTS ARE ALREADY

IMPRESSIVE BUT THE POTENTIAL IS

TRANSFORMATIVE.

WE CAN'T DO IT ALONE BUT SUCCESS

HERE MEANS NOTHING LESS THAN

CREATING A NEW ECONOMIC ENGINE

THAT WILL DRIVE NEW YORK FORWARD

FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.

WHEN WE OFFICIALLY OPEN CORNELL

TECH NEXT WEEK IT'LL BE A

MASSIVE MILESTONE FOR CORNELL

AND FOR NEW YORK CITY THE

INTRODUCTION OF SOMETHING TRULY

INNOVATIVE, YET AS I'VE ALREADY

MENTIONED, THE PRINCIPLES

AT PLAY ARE NOT NEW.

THEY BUILD ON WHAT HAS MADE

US SPECIAL FOR MORE THAN 150

YEARS.

TO PRODUCE GRADUATES WHO MAKE A

POSITIVE IMPACT ON SOCIETY.

AT CORNELL WE HAVE AN UNUSUALLY

FIERCE COMMITMENT TO THE IDEA

THAT THE LIBERAL ARTS ON THE ONE

HAND AND PROFESSIONAL STUDY

ACROSS A SWATH OF DISCIPLINES ON

THE OTHER ARE CENERGISTIC

AND MUTUALLY REINFORCING.

WE'RE EXTRAORDINARILY BROAD.

WE'RE AN IVY LEAGUE COLLEGE AND

WE'RE A LAND GRANT UNIVERSITY.

AS PROFESSOR CARL BECKER

SAID IN 1940,

UNIVERSITIES MUST PROMOTE THE

HUMANE AND RATIONAL VALUES WHICH

ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE

PRESENTATION OF DEMOCRATIC

SOCIETY.

TODAY THAT RESPONSIBILITY FEELS

MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER AND

CORNELL TECH IS AN IMPORTANT

PART OF HOW WE FULFILL IT.

SO LET ME TAKE A MOMENT AND TALK

ABOUT AN ASPECT OF THIS

MOMENT THAT IS ESPECIALLY

IMPORTANT TO ME.

WHEN I WAS IN MY FIRST FEW YEARS

AS A COMPUTER SCIENCE PROFESSOR

AT MICHIGAN, THERE WERE MORE

FACULTY MEMBERS IN THE

DEPARTMENT NAMED EGOR THAN THEY

WERE FEMALE FACULTY MEMBERS.

THERE WERE TWO EGOR'S AND THEN

THERE WAS ME.

THINGS HAVE GOTTEN A LOT BETTER.

IT'S A TRUE STORY.

THIS YEAR 51% OF THE INCOMING

CLASS AND 48% OF THE ENTIRE

UNDERGRADUATE POPULATION IN

CORNELL'S COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

IS FEMALE, A TREND

WE'RE STARTING TO SEE AT

OTHER ELITE UNIVERSITIES ACROSS

THE COUNTRY.

WE ALSO KNOW THAT DIVERSITY

CONTINUES TO BE A MASSIVE

PROBLEM IN THE TECH SECTOR AND

GIVING THE IMPORTANCE OF TECH

SECTOR GROWTH TO OUR ECONOMY,

THAT'S A PROBLEM FOR ALL OF US.

TO QUOTE JUDY SPITS, OUR

TERRIFIC PARTNER FROM

VERIZON, WHO IS SPEAR HEADING

CORNELL TECHS WOMEN IN

TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM, WHICH

WE CALL WITNY,

QUOTE, WE CAN'T SOLVE

THE WORKFORCE ISSUE WITH

LITERALLY HALF THE TEAM SITTING

ON THE BENCH.

NEW YORK'S COMPETITIVENESS

WILL DEPEND ON OUR ABILITY TO

BETTER PREPARE YOUNG PEOPLE WITH

THE SKILLS TO SUCCEED IN THE

DIGITAL ECONOMY.

WE HAVE A MORAL RESPONSIBILITY

TO MAKE SURE THAT THE PIPELINE

WE'RE CREATING IS DIVERSE.

WE'RE ATTACKING THE PROBLEM AT

EACH STEP OF THE EDUCATIONAL

PROCESS, PARTNERING WITH THE

CITY OF NEW YORK, WITH CUNY AND

WITH MANY OF OUR PEERS IN THE

TECH SECTOR.

THE WORK STARTS AT THE K-12

LEVEL WHERE WE ARE BRINGING TO

BEAR OUR TWO MOST PRECIOUS

RESOURCES, FACULTY AND STUDENTS.

OUR FACULTY MEMBERS PROVIDE

EXPERT GUIDANCE WHILE OUR

GROWING STUDENT BODY IS THE

VOLUNTARY WORKFORCE ON THE

GROUND.

UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF DIANE

LEVITT, WHO IS HERE TODAY,

WE'RE ENGAGING WITH PARTNERS

ACROSS THE EDUCATIONAL SPECTRUM

TO TRAIN TEACHERS, BUILD

CURRICULA AND CONNECT SCHOOLS TO

SERVICES AND FUNDING

OPPORTUNITIES THAT CAN HAVE A

VALUABLE INFLUENCE ON STUDENT

LEARNING.

WHILE MANY EXCELLENT PROGRAMS

TARGET STUDENTS DIRECTLY, WE

HAVE FOCUSED MOST OF OUR EFFORTS

ON TEACHERS, FOR TWO REASONS.

FIRST, THE SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS

QUALIFIED IN THE TECH FIELD IS

HOLDING BACK THE CITY'S INTENT

TO REACH EVERY STUDENT.

AND SECOND, IT IS MUCH MORE

EFFICIENT TO TRAIN A TEACHER WHO

CAN THEN REACH THOUSANDS OF

STUDENTS OVER THE COURSE OF A

CAREER.

THIS IS OUR WAY OF SUPPORTING

MAYOR de BLASIO'S COMPUTER

SCIENCE FOR ALL INITIATIVE,

ACTIVELY WORKING WITH OVER A

DOZEN SCHOOLS AND OUR WORK HAS

IMPACTED OVER 5,000 STUDENTS AND

350 TEACHERS TO DATE.

REACHING STUDENTS EARLY IN THE

LEARNING PROCESS IS CRITICAL BUT

EQUALLY IMPORTANT IS SEEING THEM

THROUGH THE KEY YEARS OF

TRANSITION FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO

COLLEGE WHEN GROUPS UNDER

REPRESENTED IN TECH ARE MOST

LIKELY TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT

PATH.

HERE WE'VE PARTNERED WITH

CUNTY, WITH ITS REACH ACROSS

THE CITY AND WITH ONE OF THE

MOST DIVERSE STUDENT BODIES IN

THE COUNTRY.

WITH THE WITNY PROGRAM WE'RE

WORKING TO EXPOSE MORE WOMEN TO

THE COMPUTER SCIENCE IN ORDER TO

HELP DIVERSE THE PIPELINE IN

NEW YORK.

WE KNOW THAT THERE ISN'T JUST

ONE FACTOR THAT BLOCKS WOMEN

FROM ENTERING COMPUTER SCIENCE,

SO OUR STRATEGY IS MULTI-PRONGED

AND PERSISTENT.

IT STARTS EVEN BEFORE STUDENTS

ARRIVE ON CAMPUS, IMMERSING THEM

IN A SUPPORTIVE TECH CULTURE AND

AIMING TO WET THEIR APPETITE.

A CURRICULUM WELCOMES THEM TO

CAMPUS FOLLOWED BY EFFORTS TO

RETAIN THEM THROUGH SCHOLARSHIP

AND MENTORSHIP FROM SOME OF

THESE MOST ACCOMPLISHED WOMEN

IN NEW YORK.

THE CURRICULUM THAT WE DEVELOPED

HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED AT MORE

THAN A DOZEN CUNY CAMPUSES WITH

2,000 STUDENTS PARTICIPATING

EACH YEAR.

THIS REPRESENTS THE BRILLIANCE

OF THE JOURNEY THAT THIS CITY

LAUNCHED SEVEN YEARS AGO.

YES, WE BUILT A CAMPUS LIKE NO

OTHER AND ARE PLACING ON IT

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS THAT

REINVISION GRADUATE EDUCATION

FOR THE DIGITAL AGE.

YES WE BROUGHT A GLOBAL ACADEMIC

PARTNER TO NEW YORK CITY AND YES

WE'VE HELP CREATE A NEW CATALYST

FOR THE EXPLOSIVE GROWTH OF

NEW YORK'S TECH ECONOMY BUT

BECAUSE THIS IS A PUBLIC,

PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP, A LAND

GRANT FOR THE 21st CENTURY WE'RE

COMMITTED TO PROGRAMS THAT GO

FAR BEYOND ROOSEVELT ISLAND AND

REACH FAR MORE PEOPLE THAN WILL

EVER GAIN DEGREES FROM CORNELL

TECH.

AS I'VE COME TO QUICKLY

APPRECIATE SINCE STARTING MY

PRESIDENCY, CORNELL IS NEARLY

UBIQUITOUS IN NEW YORK STATE.

THEIR PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES

ACROSS THE STATE IN ALL OF ITS

COUNTIES AND ALL FIVE BOROUGHS

OF THE CITY.

WITH THE OPENING OF CORNELL TECH

WE HAVE A NEW VEHICLE FOR

TRANSFORMATION AND CHANGE AND

WE'LL USE IT TO CONTINUE GROWING

OUR FOOTPRINT IN NEW YORK CITY.

WE'LL WORK DILIGENTLY FOR A

FUTURE IN WHICH ALL GROUPS ARE

INCLUDED IN THE CONVERSATION AND

AT CORNELL TECH, WE'LL CONTINUE

TO WORK TOWARDS THE COMMUNITY

THAT IS TRULY DIVERSE,

INCLUSIVE AND EGALITARIAN.

AND AT CORNELL TECH, AS ON OUR

OTHER CAMPUSES WE WILL ALWAYS

BE FOCUSED ON MAKING A

DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD.

I SAID MANY TIMES THAT CORNELL'S

ORIGINAL CAMPUS IN ITHACA IS AND

WILL REMAIN AT THE HEART OF THE

UNIVERSITY.

BUT EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITIES

ARRIVE FROM OUR EXPANSION INTO

NEW YORK CITY, CULTURAL

OPPORTUNITIES, OPPORTUNITIES FOR

A MORE IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO

INDUSTRY.

OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE FIRST

HAND IN DEVELOPING SOLUTIONS TO

THE CHALLENGES OF AN URBAN

SETTING IN A WORLD THAT IS

INCREASING URBAN.

JUST AS WE HAVE A LONG

TRADITIONAL OF RECOGNIZING AND

BUILDING ON THE LIBERAL

COMPLIMENTARY STRENGTHS OF THE

LIBERAL ARTS AND THE APPLIED

FIELDS OF STUDY, JUST AS WE'VE

BEEN HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMBINE

IVY LEAGUE VALUES WITH THOSE OF

LAND GRANT COLLEGES, SO TOO WILL

WE COMBINE AND BENEFIT FROM THE

ADVANTAGES OF OUR RURAL AND

URBAN CAMPUSES AS ONE CORNELL.

I INVITE YOU TO JOIN US IN THIS

EXTRAORDINARY PARTNERSHIP IN

SERVICE TO THE CITY, THE STATE

AND THE WORLD AND I INVITE YOU

TO VISIT US RIGHT UP THERE ON

OUR NEW 21st CENTURY LAND GRANT

CAMPUS.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

[ APPLAUSE ]

>> QUESTIONS FOR THE PRESIDENT.

I'LL START, HOW MANY STUDENTS DO

YOU ANTICIPATE STARTING AND

WHAT'S THE TOTAL GOAL OF

STUDENTS COMING THROUGH THE

SCHOOL?

>> YES.

SO RIGHT NOW WE HAVE ABOUT 325

STUDENTS GIVE OR TAKE A FEW

INCLUDING 40 Ph.D. STUDENTS.

BY 2027 WHICH IS WHEN WE FINISH

PHASE TWO, THEY'LL BE ABOUT 850

STUDENTS AND THEN IN THE LONG

RUN THEY'LL BE SEVERAL THOUSAND.

>> NOBODY HAS ANY QUESTIONS?

>> OVER HERE.

>> WHAT WAS THE MOST UNEXPECTED

THING THAT'S HAPPENED TO YOU,

BOTH IN NEW YORK CITY AND

NEW YORK STATE?

>> YOU KNOW, IN NEW YORK CITY --

SO I VISITED ROOSEVELT ISLAND

JUST A FEW DAYS AFTER I WAS

NAMED PRESIDENT.

I CAME DOWN TO MEET

PEOPLE IN NEW YORK AND YOU COULD

SORT OF SEE THE CAMPUS TAKING

SHAPE.

MAYBE I'M NOT IMAGINING ENOUGH

BUT I HAVE BEEN STUNNED AT HOW

FABULOUS IT ACTUALLY TURNED OUT.

IT'S BEYOND MY WILDEST

IMAGINATION.

>> THE VIEW FROM MY WINDOW --

>> YEAH.

THAT HAS REALLY BEEN AN

INCREDIBLY PLEASANT SURPRISE.

AS FAR AS CORNELL -- I THINK

STEVE ALSO WILL APPRECIATE THIS,

WHAT'S BEEN A SURPRISE TO ME IS

HOW FEW SURPRISES THERE HAVE

BEEN.

IT TURNS OUT THAT I'M THE SIXTH

OUT OF 14 PRESIDENT OF CORNELL

TO COME FROM MICHIGAN AND IN

RETROSPECT I DON'T

THINK THAT'S AN ACCIDENT.

I THINK THE BIG AND LARGE AND

COMPLEX, I THINK THE SORT OF

CORNELL'S A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY

WITH A PUBLIC MISSION, MICHIGAN

IS A PUBLIC UNIVERSITY WITH

PRIVATE ACADEMICS, I THINK THE

LONG-STANDING -- IT'S BEEN

SURPRISING.

IT HASN'T BEEN AS SURPRISING AS

I THOUGHT.

>> IS THERE GOING TO BE A

COMBINATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR

BOTH STUDENTS IN ITHACA AND IN

NEW YORK CITY TO GO BACK AND

FORTH?

>> YEAH.

THE MASTERS AND Ph.D. PROGRAM IS

FOR STUDENTS WHO WILL BE

PRIMARILY BASED HERE BUT WE HAVE

A NUMBER OF PROGRAMS THAT BRING

STUDENTS BACK AND FORTH FOR

SHORT VISITS, FOR SUMMERS, LAW

STUDENTS TO SPEND A SEMESTER

HERE.

WE'RE LOOKING AT LOTS OF

DIFFERENT WAYS TO BRING STUDENTS

AND VISE VERSA.

>> WHAT PERCENTAGE OF

YOUR STUDENTS COME FROM ABROAD,

DIFFERENT COUNTRIES THROUGHOUT

THE WHOLE GRAD PROGRAM?

>> I DON'T HAVE THOSE NUMBERS.

DEBORAH, DO YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW?

>> WE ARE LESS THAN -- I'M GOING

TO GET THIS WRONG, I DON'T KNOW

IT OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD ACROSS

OUR MASTERS PROGRAM, IT'S LESS

THAN HALF, WHICH IS TO SOME OF

YOU WHO ARE NOT IN ENGINEERING

MIGHT SEEM LIKE A LARGE NUMBER

AND THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE

ENGINEERING YOU'LL RECOGNIZE AS

THIS HIGH DOMESTIC PROPORTION.

>> ANY SPECIAL LINKAGES TO

TECHNION IN ISREAL AND

THEIR PROGRAMS?

>> YEAH, SO THE JACOBS TECHNION

INSTITUE WHICH IS WITHIN

CORNELL TECH IS DIRECTLY AND

INTIMATELY LINKED WITH THE

TECHNION. THAT PROGRAM HAS

TWO HUB PROGRAMS. ONE IS

IN WHAT'S CALLED CONNECTED

MEDIA AND ONE IS IN HEALTH

TECHNOLOGY.

IT WORKS DIRECTLY WITH THE

FACULTY TO SPEND TIME HERE SO A

LOT OF LINKAGES THERE.

EASY T-SHIRT UPCYCLE | Style Pile #16 - Duration: 4:34.

There is a box in every crafter's home, that is filled with old unfinished projects,

and stuff you thrifted in the hopes of upcycling.

That becomes abandoned, That becomes forgotten.

Well this is the series that tackles that forgotten box.

This is the Style Pile!

The items that I'm pulling out from the Style Pile Box today are these two loose-fitting,

slightly oversized t-shirts.

Now in the past, I've usually just styled and worn oversized tees by tying them up like

so with a hair-tie.

But that doesn't look awesome, and we can make it fit more nicely than this, with just

a tiiiiny bit more work!

So today, I'm going to be chopping these tees up to turn them into cute, tie-up crop

tops.

So, I started off with this loose-fitting t-shirt that I got from the thrift shop for

$4.

This t-shirt also has a small, kinda nasty looking little stain on it that I wanted to

get rid of – it's not showing up well on camera, but, yeah, it's… definitely

there.

So I wanted to use this tee in a project where I would be able to get rid of that stain.

So I figured out the point that I wanted to crop the t-shirt to – usually this is just

above my belly button, but you can choose wherever you would like on your own body!

Then, I drew a line with chalk at this point.

I also measured the length from the chalk line to the bottom of the t-shirt, which was

8 inches on my t-shirt.

Next, I drew on two more chalk lines that were also 8 inches up from the bottom of the

t-shirt, at the sides of the tee, and I extended these lines around to the back, just past

the side seams.

Then I flipped the tee over, so the back was facing up, and I joined up these two side

lines up with one long line of chalk, using a rule to make sure this line was straight.

So next, I cut up one side seam, and then I cut straight across this chalk line, and

then back down the other side seam of the t-shirt.

Then I flipped the tee back around to the front.

And then next, I folded the tee in half like THIS to create a crease exactly down the MIDDLE

of the t-shirt.

And then I drew a vertical chalk line directly on top of this crease.

Next, I extended the vertical line 3 inches up from the first chalk line that I drew on

the t-shirt.

Then, I cut straight up this chalk line with my pair of scissors.

The last step was to draw a curved line, that looks like THIS.

The curved line goes from that side chalk mark, down to the middle slit, and it tapers

off in a triangle shape like THIS.

And then I cut along this line with my scissors.

To make sure that the cropped t-shirt would be symmetrical, next I folded it in half again

like this, and I traced around the shape that I cut out, with my chalk.

Then I unfolded it, annnnd I cut up this line here.

And, I'm done with the cropping!

Now, an optional step is to adjust the sleeve length and permanently cuff the sleeves at

this length.

I did this by folding the sleeves up once, then twice, like this, and then tacking in

a couple of stitches at four points around the sleeves – here, here, here and here!

To do this, I used a needle and a thread, and I hand sewed - I simply sewed up and down

through the cuff a couple of times in one spot... tied off the thread at the back...

and, that's it!

And this is what it looks like!

Now this was a short and simple DIY, that can be completed in about 10-20 minutes, and

it's a great project to try out if you're new to upcycling your clothes, especially

as it doesn't require a sewing machine.

I get a lot of comments that say "I wish I could upcycle or sew my own clothes, but

I just don't have the skills!" – but I promise you, this is a project that pretty

much anybody can do!

And if you don't bother with the sleeve shortening, then all you need for this project

is a t-shirt, a pair of scissors, some chalk and a spare 10 minutes.

Also, one more note is that t-shirt fabric doesn't fray, so you don't need to worry

about finishing off the raw edges of the fabric!

All you gotta do is snip snip snip, and you're done!

Also, I just wanted to give a shoutout to everyone who came to meet me or see me on

the mental health panel at Vidcon Australia last week!

I had the BEST time meeting you all, and I hope that you guys enjoyed it as well!

I've been absolutely exhausted and recovering from Vidcon all week, so that's why I chose

this relatively simple project to do today – I hope that you guys understand, and also

hope that some of you found this project useful or inspiring nonetheless!

Thank you so much for watching, and I'll see you all next time.

Bye!

Mud n Mayhem in Julimar Forest with the Wanneroo Wanderers - Duration: 10:54.

Hello and welcome to Rona's Roadshow. Now who can resist a jaunt in the forest

with the Wanneroo Wanderers?

Where we going today Kay? Ahhh, Toodjay.

Julimar Forest! She's the navigator!

Ok, we're off the main drag so it might be tyres... I'm not noticing anyone. Yeah.

Yeah, they're doing tyres... Are they?

Kay, what are we doing? What did we get the tyre pressures down to?

Down to 24lbs Rona and it took a while because we were a little bit too conservative.

That's right. It's 30 lbs.

There's mud just behind you. Oh yeah.

We're looking forward to this. Kay! Get in there just to show them how slippy it is. Yeah sure Rona!

Look at this coming up gang. It's wet, muddy and slippy

but Kay, has...

My buddy Kay has got every confidence in me.

Alright we're going up this really slippery bit.

Let's see how Rona goes. Kay's is holding on! Holy shit!

Holy..! She'll be right. She's up. Whoops! Kay for got to put the camera up.

But she's still recording! That's the important bit. Yep.

Are you tricking me? I might..I might not be.

Just deciding who is going to do it first.

That's the trip leader. We always sacrifice... or have we got a young one?

Oh! What's wrong with you? We can do that!

Have we got the ropes?

Wisely, we decided against it.

Right let's have a look.

Morning tea, Lucy. Would you like a drink?

We're all starting up again. We're gonna go but I must say, what a beautiful place to

have morning tea. It's lovely.

CB. I've got one of those. It's called a brake.

Sitting in the passenger seat I've got to say that wasn't too bad.

Kay went down first with Bobby so she could film me coming down in the Hilux.

So what did you make of that hill, Bobby? Oh... a breeze.

I've got this down hill descent on the vehicle and its.. It's alright for some, Bob

It's alright for some. I don't have that! Oh well, you're relying on your skill not just playing on...

I'm relying on Bobby to stop me if I come sliding through.. in the the mighty Pathfinder

Some of these are a bit slippy on the bends. So you gotta be careful. Steve's leaning over there.

But he's coming through nicely.

It's a lot of twisting and turning between these trees

and it's always steeper than it looks.

Well done legends!

Another mighty Hilux!

Is this is a lunch stop? No. Not yet, just a regroup

Not far along the track we got our first vehicle bogged. A troopy no less.

I thought those things were unstoppable!

Hey Brad, what about the lockers? Pretty embarrassing...

He hit and stalled and then started again and then...

Everyone comes down to say hello don't they, when you're in the shit

everyone comes have a look and gloat, yeah

Did you go through as well? In 2 wheel drive. In 2 wheel drive!

Don't you just hate that?

There he goes. Come on! Well done. Hooray!

Oh! She does not like that!

Izuzu Steve had a very interesting theory to explain

how our vehicles performed on the tracks.

What is your theory for everything Steve?

Chaos. It's the leaf springs. It's the leaf springs.

Coming in for a bit of lunch. Found a nice little spot

Now we'll see who's got the cappuccino machines.

We're all parked up having a nice lunch

kids are playing. Suddenly a car roared through and disaster struck!

They cannot look at a pond full of water without going in...so in he's gone

and he's got nicely bogged.

Nah they're all deep around here mate. Didn't realise it was that deep.

What's your name? Gavin. Gavin the Magnificent !

Oh my God look at it! You poor thing.

Gawd! You've got a bit of cleaning to do haven't you?

Is that the air filter? Gosh

Is that Gavin's friends coming back for him?

Oh and he doesn't have a snorkel either.

Poor Gavin it looks like he's done his motor

Ohhh, I wouldn't like to be him when he's got to explain that to the missus

Chatter of onlookers

You need to tip it upside down and drain the water

Roll it over and roll it back Gav

Our trip leader, Graham, drives a mighty Suzuki no less!

Here he comes

So Graham has decided not to go into that pool that that idiot went into

There they go. They're all there now. I've got to get in the car now.

We certainly put our vehicles through some challenging hills and declines and

all too soon it was the end of the day and it was time to say goodbye to the mob.

Alright Leslie, what are you gonna say for yourself? I'd say we've had a bloody good day.

What are you? Legend!

Alright everyone airing up again

Bobby, you've been no trouble. Oh oh. Which is a big change! You don't know the half of it. I do.

All good? Enjoy that? Yes. That was great. Well done.

Now what do you reckon? Is your brother any good to go four-wheel driving with? Yes.

So you'd recommend him? Sorry ? You'd recommend him? Yeah of course.

Where is he cos we need to be putting him up...has he got a girlfriend? No, he does not.

That's what I mean..we need to put the word around. Good looking 4wd guy here.

But you gotta get past his sister mate, if you're no good you'll be getting the boot!

So have you enjoyed yourself? Yes good day. Yeh good one. Very good.

Yes so far so good.

Hope I don't get bogged getting out of here.

Ok goodbye you lot. Y'all come back now ok you hear? Want me to move forward so you can get out?

If you wouldn't mind. It's your car. I don't wanna..

Kay and I went home via the Toodjay HeritageTrail. It was fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

What have we got here? A flooded river!

Which river is this? I think we've got about 100 millimeter

according to the yardstick. Yeah but I still think, Kay, you should walk it.

Really? Well I um...

Are you willing? I think I'm gonna take a risk and not walk it.

Take it easy, Rona. I'm doing that.

Oh wow! Oh isn't that beautiful? Fabulous.

I'm so glad we came this way. Yes.

Home at last and what a surprise. Look at that!

Oh well so much for that. I get home from this Julimar Forest and there's an injury. Look!

Actually, after a few tears and struggles to straighten it, I took it off and guess what?

It fits under the carport now. I love it! I never used it anyway!

I hope you enjoyed your day out with Rona's Roadshow and the Wanneroo Wanderers.

I had a fantastic time. What a great club this is. If you're into a family club, friendly

challenging four-wheel driving, this might be the one for you.

Girl, you've already drunk 2 cases. You still good?

Vampires don't get drunk.

Oh, really. But you know-

Did I do the right thing, guys? If I said yes or...

You know, you can't fix a relationship with a proposal.

It doesn't get fixed in a snap.

What was he thinking?

See, you're drunk.

No, I'm just trying to be cute.

That Sasha entering the scene just ruined everything.

But it's not just her.

I also feel...

Kiko is tuned off when she's around.

So turn him on.

Maybe humans and vampires just aren't really meant for each other.

If Kiko proposes right now at this very moment, what will you say?

Well I wanna be with him.

But not like this.

Have you ever experienced wanting to say yes?

But not really.

Me, I want to say yes.

No. Phyllis, we're not asking you. I'm not done with you yet.

Wait.

You.

Kiko seemed sincere with his proposal.

Sincere, yes.

But I can't feel it.

I love him, yes.

But...

it's complicated!

Phyllis, what are you up to again?

I'm not good with tips and tricks on love,

but I give great hugs.

Sorry, I really don't-

You like fries? These are blood stew-flavored.

Yes looks good.

Actually, it's okay. I'm distracted.

So, what now?

I don't know.

Why?

Why...why?

Isn't it enough reason that I want to marry you because I love you.

Kiko,

I love you too.

I knew it.

So,

does this hug mean it's a yes?

What? Of course not.

Why?

It's wrong. You just used the proposal as a way to make up with me.

Well,

fine.

Kiko,

I have a question and I want an honest answer.

Do you want to have a family in the future?

Yes,

with you.

Vampires can't have kids.

Ever.

I'm not like Sasha-

Why are we always talking about Sasha?

Because I can see you're not happy with us.

I'm happy.

Even if we can't go out during the day?

The cancelled beach trips...

all the lying to your parents.

Izabel, I'm happy with you.

Are you ready to leave your family and friends for me?

In the future? Can you do that?

I don't have to leave them.

We'll stay here.

Have you ever considered what will happen once you grow old and I stay the same age?

Once people notice that I don't age.

You don't know how hard it is to change your identity, just so people won't suspect me.

In the future, will you go with me if I need to leave?

Yes.

How come you didn't sound very sure?

I don't get why it's so hard for us to understand each other.

Because Kiko I'm a vampire. And-

And the turn me into one!

Are you serious? Is that what you want?

It's simple.

If you won't turn me into one, then don't expect me to act like one.

Remember, I'm still human.

Why can't you understand?

So,

now you're angry?

Come on, turn me into one.

It will solve all our problems.

Why are you so stubborn?

The problem with you humans,

it takes a long time for you to mature.

So, we're arguing about our age now?

You know, this conversation is done.

Fine.

Hello?

Do you remember our last conversation?

This time, I might actually need your help.

Okay, I'll go there.

Did you get everything?

Can you check if the "Ruby Stone" is the right size?

That's fine.

Okay.

What about that-

Nice.

Nice.

And then the perfume?

Here's the perfume.

Nice.

I ran out of perfume.

Hey, it's Izabel. Say hi.

Hi! Human or slave?

Slave.

Can you still remember how that book looks like?

It's big, worn-out, and looks really old.

All the books here look old and worn-out.

Serious.

Sorry.

You know, good thing you brought me that perfume, or else I won't help you.

I was thinking maybe we can find an easier way?

Wait, I think this is the book.

There's an entry about making potions.

"When your loved one is madly in love, boil three pieces of bird's essence, a rat-tail, feather dust, and pure nitrogen."

This is it! This is our book of rituals!

Let me see, let me see.

Okay.

"Put some bits of liquid sosa into the concoction as a finisher.

Have your husband's mistress drink it, and she'd be dead within 5 to 7 minutes."

This is not the book.

It just looks like the book, but it's all about fake potions.

I imagine the book would look more ominous, more menacing, more…

Ah wait!

I think I knew it.

I think this is it. This is it, Izabel.

This is the ritual we're looking for.

Look.

Yes! I'm really good!

That doesn't look worn-out.

You did say that there's no other way?

Well, that's the only way I can think of to make it easier for you to be with Kiko.

Izabel, we've known each other for ages.

You have changed a lot.

Well, love changes everything.

But seriously, the ritual will take something from you in return.

Game!

I'm serious.

Game.

No vampire has done it before.

And it doesn't say in the book what you stand to lose.

It depends.

What if you lose all your powers?

What if you lose even your immortality?

It's Kiko.

I'm willing to do everything.

At least,

you can eat human food again.

Remember the one we saw on the internet? That quick-melting cheese.

When you go to Maginhawa, when you buy shawarma, you can put garlic on it.

Game!

You can put sauce on it-

Game!

Okay, game!

Will you fit in this?

Your necklace, and all your other stuff, put them all here.

Everything must go, before we start the ritual.

And please, Kiko has been calling you all night, answer that phone!

After that, put your phone here, too.

If you won't answer the call, can you at least put in on silent mode?

My ears are hurting from that disgusting old ringtone.

Hello?

I'm sorry, this is quite unexpected but can we see each other now?

I don't know. But I've made up my mind.

Can we see each other now? Please?

Remember,

once we do the ritual, everything will change.

Are you ready?

Elementum Ego Unda Vico Dos.

You have to drink this.

Thanks for doing this.

Don't thank me yet.

Farewell, my friend.

Whatever it takes.

Trump vows if threatened to 'totally destroy' North Korea, Kim Jong-un on 'suicide mission' - Duration: 2:39.

Our top story this morning....

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued his strongest warning yet to North Korean leader

Kim Jong-un at his debut at the UN General Assembly.

Calling him by the nickname, "Rocket Man," on the global stage, Trump said North Korea's

nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles are a threat to the entire world.

Our Park Hee-jun has the details.

The 72nd UN General Assembly session opened on Tuesday.

Leaders from 193 member states gathered at the UN's New York headquarters to address

several ongoing international crises,...including the Rohingya crisis, the civil war in Syria,

climate change, and of course North Korea's continual nuclear and missile provocations.

The highlight was, as expected, U.S. President Donald Trump's keynote speech at his first

appearance at a General Assembly session since his inauguration in January.

In a wide-ranging speech where he hit out at Iran and Venezuela,...

President Trump reserved his sternest words for the leadership in Pyongyang.

He said that,... if necessary,... the U.S. would "totally destroy" North Korea to defend

itself and its allies.

(English) "The United States has great strength and

patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but

to totally destroy North Korea.

Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime.

The United States is ready, willing and able, but hopefully this will not be necessary."

He went on to emphasize the importance of UN member nations working together to isolate

the Kim Jong-un regime.

President Trump also thanked members of the UN Security Council, specifically China and

Russia,... for their votes in favor of the toughest ever UN resolution on Pyongyang for

its most recent nuclear test.

Although Pyongyang will have heard President Trump's comments loud and clear,... the North

Korean diplomats in New York weren't in the room to hear them.. as the North's UN ambassador

left his seat prior to Trump's arrival.

Following the speech, South Korea's presidential office issued a statement, saying it's evident

the new U.S. administration sees the North Korean nuclear issue as highly important.

The top office also said Trump's remarks confirm that the strongest possible sanctions are

the only way to denuclearize the rogue regime.

President Moon Jae-in, who will deliver his speech on Thursday, is expected to focus on

North Korea and call for international cooperation to condemn and rein in Pyongyang's provocations.

Puerto Rican and American Korean War veterans visit Korea - Duration: 2:32.

A group of Korean War veterans have been invited back to the nation they once helped protect.

Special events are being held to appreciate their services, and to show the veterans and

their families how far South Korea has come since those dark days of war.

Cha Sang-mi reports.

A group of Korean War veterans flew halfway around the world to revisit the site of the

battlefield they once fought in as teenagers many years ago.

(Stand-up) "It's been over half a century since the Korean

War, but the people of South Korea still remember and appreciate the sacrifice these veterans

and their families made defending the freedom we enjoy today."

What's special about this visit is that half the veterans and their families on the Revisit

Korea Program are from Puerto Rico, a Caribbean island -- five times the size of Jeju Island

-- under the jurisdiction of the U.S.

Out of the 61-thousand Puerto Ricans who served in the 65th Infantry Regiment, 756 passed

away and a hundred are still missed in action.

But one of them who hasn't stepped on Korean soil for 67 years says he clearly remembers

everything about the destructive war and is taken aback by the immense advances Korea

has made.

(ENGLISH) "The advance and the recuperation that South

Korea has made since the war.

Because the war was left Korea almost without anything.

And they have done an amazing job trying to rebuild and I'm surprised the way they have

done this."

The veterans had time to reflect on the war as they paid a silent tribute to honor their

fellow soldiers at the Seoul National Cemetery.

They also had a chance to experience Korean culture at an event prepared by the Ministry

of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.

(KOREAN) "We began this Revisit Korea Program in 1975.

Our ministry looks to invite as many veterans as possible to show them around Korea while

they are still alive."

Dressed in the Korean traditional clothing "Hanbok", and taking an introductory Korean

class, the veterans enjoyed their visit.

(ENGLISH) "It changed so much.

For instance, when we came first time, there were only 1 or 2 bridges across the Han River.

And now I understand there are 31 or 32."

Korea's 51 million citizens will always remember the dedication these veterans of the United

Nations forces made some 60 years ago.

domain name for your online store or business I want to go through five

points let's start with the first one now

you're gonna want to make sure that your top-level domain name is available for

example if you're aiming at a UK market you would want to have

Duff code at UK and calm if you aim at the national market always get calm not

this or a board or anything we're like that if you come up get your top little

domain name is small available then you want to consider changing our entire

domain Ian something different one example of a company that did this would

be ISIL they wanted to be named themselves icicle but the domain name

was not available so to change their entire business name just to get their

top-level domain name and it's obviously worked out well for that having a good

top-level domain name this is really important especially for your online

store all right skip any domain names with the D and or or similar words like

that they're just not good enough searching your friendly and just not

relevant to this case oh and also are going on their domain names they can be

more searching your friendly because there's more keywords in there but

they're also harder to remember easier to misspell and harder to type point

number two if you're building a brat use the name of your products or business

for example Levi Strauss has the man named Levi Strauss calm instead of that

jeans online this is especially important if you already have a retail

store and want to build just want to build an online store for it

my third point is very important Vista ezio aspect casillas stuff of search

engine optimization and you need to have this in mind you think about this a lot

when you're in a nurse one thing is relevancy the domain name needs to be

relevant to your online store if you're selling bicycle you can't have a domain

name called the cheap toothpicks comm is there to have a domain name called the

chief bicycles or bicycles online by bicycles and mail or anything similar

they need to be relevant if search is your priority which I think it should be

in the most kids especially if you just newly started your online store then

build your domain name and keywords if you're selling bicycles have your domain

name could possibly be cheap bicycles call if you're selling purses your main

name could be something like five purses online or purses online online purses or

anything similar just keep it relevant and with the keywords you need to

research at this point and use tools such as Google Keyword planner to find

out that which keywords do you're a potential target consumer search for and

remember the more organic searches you will get the less you'll have to spend

on Adwords to reach your target audience and receive potential customers point

number four is your domain name scalable

if you're planning to sell for example kitchen utilities who do any name is

better to be it's better to be kitchen utilities calm and then just Forks calm

because people will think you only sell for us so it needs to be scalable I mean

if you need it for your business it all depends but in most cases something will

start out selling a panelist and then they end up selling printers so it's

good to have a scalable domain

it's hard to have a very scalable domain name and also a keep a very good keyword

in your domain so you'll have to compromise here for example if people

are looking to buy designer Forks online it's more likely that they will search

for designer force them designer kitchen utilities so this is one of the things

however if you have designer kitchen until thieves you will have its scale

which in sold a lot of desire stuff when it comes to kitchen appliances or

retailers were I mean a potential customer would rather buy a bicycle from

bicycle stored up for my key to store so it needs to be relevant the same time

and you would pro not want to sell bicycles under a domain name called

toothpicks car and if you do don't simply don't all right

point number five is the SEO checkup it's like a health check

you can use services such as a winter or surf book to see which keywords rank how

well with your domain and you can check for a day for seven days for multi chin

on different timelines and see for example if you're actually climbing your

rankings or droppings and if you're dropping this during a certain time like

in January why is this is a seasonal variation is there something wrong with

it and another tool that you must use loved is Google Webmaster Tools do

they're actually fine if you have any broken links there or if there's

anything else that's wrong with your site that school will not appreciate now

these are the five points you have then I should just go ahead and choose a

domain name just sit down and brainstorm and think about it for a week check with

your friends and family if you want or don't because they might not even have

your idea they might not even understand what you're trying to accomplish so but

it's all up to you you know your friends family better than I do thank God okay

all right our video reaches around if you like this video share and subscribe

I'll see you in the next video alright good luck

Win The Lottery - Duration: 3:05.

hey guys in the following minutes I will show you the quickest way I know to

solve this problem so let's begin winning the lottery is based on this

seven-time winner tells all what would you do with the money if you won the

lottery for example what if you won eight hundred forty-two thousand one

hundred fifty two dollars playing mega money like I did or if you won ninety

eight thousand dollars playing fantasy five grand prize what would you do with

the moolah would you quit your job and tell your boss to pounce and would you

buy a house that was so big you could walk to the other end and disappear for

days if you wanted would you buy a new sports car so you can drive by your ex's

house with the top down showing off your new ride whatever you do with the money

there's no doubt that winning the lottery would be life changing

believe me I know from experience I've won seven lottery Grand Prizes and two

million dollars in cash and prizes I've been on Ripley's Believe It or Not

Rachael Ray Good Morning America and other shows that wanted to learn from

the only seven-time lottery winner heck I won the lottery so much I literally

wrote the book on winning with that said you and I both know that I can't

guarantee you you'll win any lotto now or ever it's just not possible because

winning the lottery is a game of chance and that my friend is the secret to win

more you got to increase your chances and that you can do believe me there are

things you can do to boost your chances it's what I cover in my lottery

Dominator system for example I'm a big fan of determining your lucky numbers

and then sticking with them it's true instead of just winging it and using all

different numbers every time you play choose your numbers and stick to your

guns I know it sounds kind of simple but just these three secrets alone will

increase your chances of winning one is to play in the first place two is try

and play often enough so you just get more chances it makes sense the more you

play the more chances of winning and three find numbers that mean something

to you and stay with those I promise do those three things alone and you'll

boost your odds of winning more than most people who only round

we play and pick different numbers each time look winning the lottery seven

times like I have isn't about luck it's about trying stuff finding things that

work and then doing those more often speaking of knowing what works if you

want to learn the same winning methods I've used over the last 20 years to win

seven grand prize LOTOS and over two million in cash is how one more proof

that my winning ways will work for you Richard Crisfield from Maryland bought a

winning Maryland lottery Ravens scratch ticket on December 2011 for $250,000

several of my friends win anywhere from 2,000 each month pulled away out to ten

thousand I'd love to help you enjoy the same kind of results I changed my life

completely by using the system please do yourself a favor and try it out I know

you'll be amazed
