moves en masse across the land and the sea
a collective exodus of biblical proportions
moves further from its roots entire populations
fleeing from conflicts, famines, poverty, and persecution
This is what Human Flow is telling

through Ai Weiwei's first-hand testimony
the Chinese human rights activist
who applies his own pictorial sensibility
to the great scenarios of the present
In terms of content
what strikes is the magnitude of the phenomenon
described both in numerical terms
and through gigantic framing
often filmed from above
where the refugee camps and the columns of migrants
appear in all their immensity
at the same time
in all their entomological dimension
Also from the artistic point of view
these shots are the most successful part
of a documentary that for its visual impact
is comparable to certain Salgado photographs
telling the human anthill
created by misery and war
In his anxiety to tell all the possible migrations
the director travels to about forty refugee camps
and 23 countries
filling the film up to the brim
with images, numbers and news
The contrast between large pictures and individual testimonies
works well
Weiwei's documentary
is testament to the sense of loss
of those who it defines "dislocated"
rather than migrants
and emphasises
the lack of reception reserved for them by a world
that instead of creating more humanitarian corridors
raises fences and always erects new barriers
