El espectro de palabras posibles con que se describe esa relación es muy amplio: desde indiferencia y crueldad hasta demagogia e inclusión, pasando por todas las formas de mala conciencia que pretenden licuar en la vida cotidiana una relación de poder

Por supuesto que ese espectro no excluye el afecto sincero ni la empatía. Como muchos argentinos de clase media tuve mi experiencia personal

Durante mi infancia —y desde mucho antes de que yo naciera— María Rojas vivió en mi casa de lunes a viernes las 24 horas

Se ocupaba de las tareas hogareñas que, en mi época, incluían el cuidado del hijo menor y bastante alejado en edad de sus hermanos: yo

Esa mezcla de distancia y cercanía que caracteriza la relación con las empleadas domésticas tiene su correlato en la película en el equilibrio de anécdotas personales, por supuesto, pero sobre todo en las decisiones estéticas que toma el director mexicano

Alfonso Cuarón parte de algunos códigos relacionados con el cine realista (como el neorrealismo italiano, por ejemplo) y los recubre de una sofisticada capa de artificios

La fotografía es en blanco y negro, los planos largos, los actores no son profesionales

Sin embargo, la verdad de la película no surge espontáneamente —como suele suceder en los cines que confían en la imagen— sino a través de una cuidadosa y maníaca planificación

La cámara siempre está apartada de los hechos, observando desde cierta "distancia" (la palabra se repite en varios sentidos)

No hay casi primeros planos y apenas unos cuantos planos medios; la película está construida prácticamente solo con planos generales, recargados de detalles, a favor del foco profundo que le permite a Cuarón la película de 65 mm utilizada (Cuarón es, además, el director de fotografía de la película)

El punto de vista casi invariablemente es el de Cleo, la protagonista. Su mirada siempre está ligeramente apartada, salvo cuando le pasan cosas terribles

Allí, todo sucede más cerca, insoportablemente cerca, y Cuarón nos hace sufrir con ella, acortando la distancia habitual, sin cortar la escena hasta que todo suceda, por más que el espectador pida encarecidamente que la cámara desvíe la mirada

"Roma", de Alfonso Cuarón En general, la cámara se desplaza lateralmente a la acción que se despliega ante su ojo como un enorme tableau vivant

Cleo contempla, nosotros contemplamos a Cleo contemplando, pero la distancia se acorta a través de los artificios: la fotografía nítida, brillante y precisa, que no deja detalle, por más alejado que esté sin su foco y definición; la puesta en escena que no deja espacio de la pantalla sin darnos información y un trabajo sobre el sonido que merece un párrafo propio

El espacio sonoro (sí, existe tal cosa) de Roma es un prodigio en sí mismo. La película no tiene música compuesta especialmente para el film, apenas suenan algunas canciones incorporadas en la trama provenientes de radios y tocadiscos

Sin embargo, suenan voces, bocinas, pájaros, animales, motores, rumores, gritos, bocinazos, olas, aviones que cruzan el cielo

La paleta sonora es de una riqueza poco común. Se ha discutido mucho sobre el hecho de que una película con un preciosismo tan extremo sea financiada y exhibida en Netflix

Los grandes festivales, como Cannes, se han puesto firmes en privilegiar la exhibición en salas y no aceptan películas que no cumplan con ese requisito

La experiencia es realmente espectacular y permite apreciar el trabajo descomunal que tiene una película en apariencia chica pero ambiciosa y perfeccionista

Las escenas en la calle (como en una salida grupal al cine, muy importante en lo argumental), escuchadas con atención, son como un retrato sonoro del México de la década del 70 casi tan valioso como su reconstrucción visual

Uno podría escuchar el sonido de la película, independizado de las imágenes que lo acompañan, como un extraño podcast, experimental y vanguardista, pero bello e irresistible

Hay varias secuencias, muchas resueltas en un solo plano, que merecen el reconocimiento inmediato del amante del cine

La escena decisiva, en la playa, es una de ellas. Es un plano increíble, simple pero de una complejidad argumental y técnica enorme

Sabemos que Cleo no sabe nadar y eso hace que el hecho de que corra hacia las aguas genere una tensión tremenda

El suspenso no está creado, a la Hitchcock, con el montaje, sino por las cosas que suceden en pantalla en el mismo plano

Revisen, los que ya la vieron, la dificultad de recrear esas imágenes en un solo plano, la aparición en el agua de los distintos protagonistas en el momento exacto

Aprecien la proeza actoral de terminar con toda esa secuencia física desembocando en un encuentro íntimo, con una línea de diálogo reveladora y emocionante: todo eso sin un corte ni un primer plano para aumentar la emotividad

A todo este logro hay que sumarle lo siguiente: el sol se está poniendo y está en la misma línea que la cámara y el grupo humano que se abraza y llora

Eso implica que ese plano —que dura seis minutos— difícilmente se podría filmar más de una vez por día

(Porque el cineasta puede controlar muchas cosas, pero el movimiento del sol, todavía no)

"Roma", de Alfonso Cuarón Si todos estos prodigios técnicos y estéticos son sorprendentes, hay que decir que están en función de la idea central de la película, del retrato de Cleo, de su soledad, de su distancia irreparable y su cariño con esa familia sustituta, con gente que la ama y a la que ella ama, pero que en definitiva, sabe que pertenece a otro mundo, inalcanzable

El último plano de Roma, sencillo pero contundente, refuerza la idea. Ya regresados de la playa, ya reconciliados con su nueva situación familiar, Cleo vuelve a sus tareas

Sube a la terraza a colgar ropa. Por primera vez, la cámara no reemplaza a su mirada, sino que la mira a ella alejarse

Later in Luke,

terribly frightened. And the angel said to them, "Don't be afraid; for behold

"I bring you good news of great joy, which should be for all the people.

"For today in the City of David there has been born for you a savior

Who is Christ the Lord."

Three different scenarios that are all a part of the Christmas story and we see one thing in common with all of these.

These folks were afraid.

They were concerned there were things they didn't understand and in each of those situations where they're facing an

impossible decision,

They're facing circumstances that they just see no way out of, they've been

approached by something they don't know how to handle and in each of those situations.

God speaks to them and says, "Fear not you don't need to be afraid."

As long as we are seeking God with us.

And we're seeking his will, if we'll be quiet and listen.

Peace on earth and goodwill toward men

Yes, but we'll also hear,

"You don't have to be afraid." It wasn't a reprimand;

it was comfort.

It was Emmanuel, God with us.

You don't have to be afraid.

Whatever you're facing isn't bigger

Than the gift that we've been given this Christmas.

The way to keep him - it's not a monetary thing, I think they could offer him all the money in the world - but it's just to say: 'look, you're enjoying your football under Sarri, tell me the role that you want and we'll build the team around you

my friends there welcome to another episode of ghost stories in folklore

well my friends these Christmas I am bringing back an old Victorian tradition

of telling ghost stories at Christmas time in the next few videos I will be

sharing with you 21 ghost tears and what I would like you to do is leave a

comment down in the comment section of the title of your favorite ale from each

video for now let's get started with the first seven ghost stories and folklore

from Christmas this one is entitled a chilling ghost in my eyes a few

Christmases ago we were invited to stay with their friends at their beautifully

restored house my daughter's room was the sweetest just down the corridor from

ours it had candy colored teacups on the

wallpaper an adorable four posters single bed and a lovely little ensuite

the bathroom the first night we all slept soundly

replete with food wine and gossip on the second night we all retired slightly

earlier I awoke around 2:00 a.m. seen a light flickering I walked down the

corridor to my daughter's room she was in there wide-awake watching a video on

my laptop she too had a walk it could not get back to sleep I closed

a laptop tidied up the little bedroom and straightened up the bed clothes I

talked her back in and sat down on the edge of her bed to stroke her hair as I

said their house losing myself I realized that the room felt rather

chilly despite the window it was my daughter's

eyes were closed as she was drifting off I pulled up the blankets around her

night darling I whispered night-night love me she replied and half opened her

eyes suddenly her pupils a widening fear tears sprang out of nowhere mommy what's

wrong with your face she cried recoiling in horror and seeking beneath their

covers I felt a rush of cold air down my spine and a thud in my ears like a door

being slammed a long way away my back felt icy I could feel the presence of

something right behind me something ancient and evidently rather irritable

I stood up with a jump brushing the air away there was a loud hum as though the

whole room was vibrating and then just like that it was gone my daughter and I

looked at each other open mouths what just happened what did

you see I asked your face replied my daughter it wasn't you it was like like

someone else was looking at me through your eyes these snakes one is a ghostly

this next one is a true ghost story talking about the former prison of

Alcatraz the island of Alcatraz off the coast of San Francisco has a long and

spooky history in its early days Native Americans

allegedly used to banish miscreants to the island as punishment where they were

reportedly plagued by local spirits how the trials of course became a notorious

federal prison in 1934 housing criminals such as Al Capone before it was shut

down in 1963 today visitors to the island report hearing screams the

clanging of metal doors in the sound of voices within the walls one of the more

famous tales associated with the island supposedly occurred in the 1940s when

the warden james Johnston held a Christmas Day party at his residence for

the staff at the prison the good cheer is said to have been brought to a swift

halt when an apparition sporting mutton-chop whiskers in a gray suit

appeared the temperature in the room plummeted and the fire blew out before

returning to normal when the spirit disappeared about a minute later the

rattle guards were too scared to stay in the residence in the rest of the

Christmas celebration ended abruptly

this one is entitled grandma visits every Christmas every Christmas

afternoon my family which includes my parents siblings aunts uncles cousins

gather in the living room of my grandma's house to play party games at

some point each year we are joined by the spirit of my great-grandmother

Dorothy who passed away some time ago her arrival is always Harold in the same

way first the carved wooden dolphins would sit on

top of my grandma's television a pair to leap into the air and turn somersaults

before come crashing to the floor with a thud next comes the sound of the door

slamming somewhere in the house followed by the living room lights flickering

eerily it makes the hair on the back of

everyone's neck stand up but rather than feeling scared most of us find it quite

comfortable we miss her and for those few minutes it feels like she's still

with us we'll say hi mana and our star visitor has come to join us then it will

be over we'll go back to exchanging presents or watching a movie Dorothy

loved Christmas day encourage everyone to get involved in games and of charades

or having drinks and it's time when our whole family is together so it's no

great surprise that she chooses them to make her appearance

this next Ronda is entitled the Christmas ghost of Glamis castle a

Christmas time a bearded man who flits about that night in hovers over the bed

of sweepers is reported pale faces that peer through the windows and vanish to

the accompaniment of shrieks there are sounds of hammering as if somebody was

putting up scaffolding it can also be heard in the middle of the night and

these are by no means the greatest of the castles terrors a woman that was big

guests at the castle one Christmas night a woke to hear the moving of his soft

body over the floor of her bedroom in the crack of a bony joint and then to

see the out of something luminous and horrid in her room slowly she says the

thing whatever it was took she a body toning and haunched arms long in spite

of the large and terrible head with a tangled mass of gray hair a face

white in staring pig like information malevolent in expression as she stared

at it a guest it reared itself on its haunches and leer hideously at her then

shuffling forward it rolled over and laid sprawled out like some ungainly

turtle at that time the handle on the door turned and someone entered the room

there was a loud cry in the whole tower walls rafters rang with the most

appalling scream

these stories entitled sent the stuffs the stockings when I was nine years old

I could not get to sleep on Christmas Eve because I was excited about the

presence and wondered if my parents had anything to do with the gifts that I

received from Santa the year before that night it was hot because the heater was

on so I got thirsty also I was wanting to spy I cut out of bed and cracked open

my door to make sure no one was out in the living so that I could get something

to drink when I opened the door I saw someone bent over then he stood up it

was Santa Claus dressed in red and white get up something strange was that I

could see the Christmas lights from the Christmas tree shining through

he was taking the stockings down off the mantel and placing them on the coffee

table when he started to turn around to put the next stocking on the table I

closed the door and jumped back into bed the next morning I woke up and told my

sister what had seen I told her where he had placed the stockings when we wanted

to deliver them the stockings were where I said that he put them we both turned

and looked at each other and froze her but from then on I have told everyone

that I believed and sat down

this next one is entitled the figure in the recliner my mother to whom I was

very close passed away when I was 17 years old that same year I left home but

I met a girl five years later who I will call care and we got married in March

the following year in December the year after we were expecting our first child

we were living in a spa wanting to have bedroom bungalow there was a fireplace

in the living room my wife and I loved the fireplace and we had it lit almost

every night it was Christmas Eve and we had just finished putting the gifts

under the tree in a nice fire gave off a beautiful glow on the tree one string of

Lights which was supposed to flash had stopped several days before it was five

minutes to midnight when the fireplace suddenly just about one time in that

string of lights started to flash but the strange thing is is the other lights

stopped flash my wife and I was sitting on the floor

and it had become very chilly in the room I looked over at my recliner and a

figure was sitting there it was my mother with a big beautiful smile on her

face my wife who had never met my mother before said she could see the same thing

this spirit never spoke but just kept looking at me and my wife and smiling at

midnight the fireplace started up again and the lights on the tree stopped

flashing and the others started flashing again I again looked over at the chair

and the spirit was gone no matter what I did to those Christmas lights

they never flashed again thank you to my friends and I hope you enjoy these ghost

He says the Queen hates watching herself on TV and so takes herself off for a walk instead.
