I made that family.
It's not the family that was given to me.
Those are my friends now, my brothers, you know, my
sisters now.
They help me every single day, and they push me further.
Meet a young man who finds his place in the world through the camaraderie of his robotics
teammates.

We're here at Island School, located on Kaua'i.
Island School is a private school that was founded by
seven mothers.
It first opened its doors in 1977 in Keālia, which is a small town on Kaua'i, located on
the east side.
More students meant they needed more space.
As enrollment grew to the hundreds, Island School officially moved to Līhu'e in 1991.
The first ten acres of land was donated by Amfac, a business
and land development company.
After a lot of hard work and money raised, Island School now sits on
thirty-eight acres of land, with over four hundred students from all over the island.
Our first story takes us to the Valley Isle, where students at Maui High School tell the
story of a young man who found his life's purpose and his family
in robotics.
[BUZZING]
I'm a welder.
What that is, is I put things together through hot flames.
And I put so much effort into it that it just relaxes me.
My mind is empty, it's just a calm place.
This tranquility is something seventeen-year-old Maui High School senior, John Fabella, has
been searching for all his life.
His mother passed away when he was seven, and his father was deported.
So, when he started with me in sixth grade, he was really insecure.
He'd have tantrums and like, run out of the room and stop.
It really affects you as a person.
You grow up faster, you make your own shelter around you, you make
your own bubble.
Luckily, one person who did get in was his former teacher and Maui Waena robotics advisor,
Mrs. Jennifer Suzuki.
I didn't want to give up on him, because I felt like too many people had already given
up on, where he had lost too much.
Suzuki replaced his emptiness with camaraderie and competition.
She convinced John to join her robotics team.
It gave him that sense of purpose.
And he needed that.
He didn't have a real strong family, so now he
does.
Through long practices, this team became John's support system.
I made family through robotics.
I made that family.
It's not the family that was given to me.
Those are my friends now, my brothers, you know, my
sisters now.
They help me every single day, and they push me further.
Stop.
Go.
People think robotics isn't a sport because it's not a physical aspect.
But what makes robotics unique is, we as students, we as kids, teenagers, we
coach ourselves.
[BELL] And that's it [INDISTINCT].
That's the best part about it, because robotics, we're the ones doing all the work.
We're making the runs, we're making the plays.
Now a team captain, John has built a new sense of leadership and confidence.
As a person, I grew up with a lot of self-doubt, a lot of anger.
Robotics was a perfect way to actually unleash things and create something beautiful
for my mind and my creativeness.
Now, I feel more self- confident about myself, and I know more about
myself.
The confidence John acquired after seven years of robotics gave him a brighter outlook on
life.
Next year, he plans to go to college and major
in mechanical engineering.
Despite me back then, thinking that I wouldn't be here right now building robots, designing
robots, and actually going to college, you know, for that
aspect, you know, it makes me super happy.
I think that robotics helped him focus and find something he was good at, and really
work hard so he could prove to himself.
And that kinda spread in everything in his life.
If I can go see my little self, my sixth-grade self, I would be like, Eh, kid, never say
never, because things happen every single day that you can change
yourself.

Our next story comes from the Kaimukī District of O'ahu, where students at Sacred Hearts
Academy warn us of the ill-effects our smartphones
and other devices can have on our spines.
Smartphones, tablets, laptops, all are forms of technology that practically never leave
our side.
I basically just have an Apple laptop and an iPhone, like everybody else.
I think in our society today, wherever you go, you notice people from a young age to
an old age, they're always on their phones or any electronic devices
that they have.
But as they become more ingrained in our everyday lives, they're also becoming a real pain in
the neck.
Literally.
The connectivity, that's great for this generation.
But it has given us some interesting conditions that we
never saw before.
The neck being one of them, also some problems with the fingers from repetitive
motion that comes from texting.
Its development is similar to carpal tunnel, which is a painful condition in the wrist
caused by a pinched nerve.
The extra pressure puts a strain of sixty pounds on the neck and spine, and can pull
it out of alignment.
It can also hurt your back.
Normally, it should come down more like this.
You can see where the vertebra are here.
And that comes from the head dropping forward and the shoulders
dropping forward, and creating kind of this hunched
back.
Kids are not the only ones experiencing this problem.
As a high school teacher, Mr. Kevin Allen relies
heavily on technology.
I use it daily, you know, to check email, answer phone calls from whoever.
The neck is flexed forward at like a forty-five degree angle, which is very common when you're
texting.
It actually increases the amount of strain on the neck to about thirty to forty pounds.
I find that when I look down at my phone or my computer, my neck does get very sore from
time to time.
If I'm using particularly a cell phone or an iPad, and I'm looking down for, I think,
longer than maybe fifteen, twenty minutes, my neck will start
to sort of cramp up.
But texting isn't the only culprit.
Experts say gaming and social media are also to blame.
On an average, studies show that people spend over four hours
a day on their devices.
Although "text neck" is becoming a growing epidemic, there are still ways to
prevent it.
Usually looking at some physical therapy, which might be aimed at trying to relax the
muscles, sometimes using massage, stretching, ice,
heat, and sometimes medications are needed to take down the
inflammation in that muscle area.
I don't think that I could take any precautions.
Like, I don't see myself lessening my time using my
phone or my laptop.
But knowing more about "text neck" and the effects it'll have on me twenty, thirty
years from now, I'll be more aware of that.
Experts say knowledge is the first step, and being aware of the dangers of "text neck"
could stop it from being a major health issue in the future.
This Frances Nicole Tabios from Sacred Hearts Academy, for
HIKI NŌ.
We're back on Kaua'i's beautiful south side, at the Makauwahi Cave.
This cave is the largest limestone cave in the state of Hawai'i, and contains
fossils dating back as much as ten thousand years.
The surrounding Makauwahi Cave Reserve features
twenty-five acres of ecological restorations containing
roughly a hundred endangered and non-endangered native plant species.
It is also home to many endangered water birds.
We take you now to Kahului, where students at Maui Waena Intermediate School introduce
us to a family tradition that continues to survive, despite
the passing of its driving force.
[POUNDING]
The process of making mochi consists of steaming and pounding sweetened rice to create a Japanese
dessert that brings good luck to the new year.
But really, sharing this tradition creates something even
sweeter: memories and community.
For the past twenty-seven years, Carolyn and Tom Fujita have
hosted the annual mochi pounding at their home in Kahului, Maui.
Okay, we started really small in 1985.
We pounded like fifty pounds, maybe a little less than fifty pounds
of mochi.
And now, we pound little over two hundred pounds of mochi.
But this event does not plan itself.
Every single year we've been doing mochi pounding, Grandpa spends a lot of his time preparing
for it with the mallets.
He puts up the tents.
He puts out all the chairs.
He cleans the tables.
He rearranges our house.
He does all kinds of stuff just to prepare for this.
He does it every year.
This year's preparation has been more difficult because on November 28th, Carolyn, Tom's wife
sadly passed away.
Mrs. Fujita was our matriarch.
I mean, she and her husband were pretty much our group leaders.
They took the lead in getting this together.
It's different, because she's not here.
We miss her this year, because she used to do so much things.
Help me shop, and help me plan, for one thing, the menu.
She has lot of input [CHUCKLE] making the menu.
People come together from as far as the Mainland to celebrate this tradition.
Everybody's not Buddhist, but they still have the tradition.
And the tradition continues in the way of fellowship, and continues in the way of giving
some mochi that you've just pounded to your neighbors,
and have them share in that joy of doing this kind of work.
It's more than tradition.
When I grew up, we used to pound mochi.
And mostly family.
So, that's carrying on the tradition, but for me, it's
getting together and ... lot of friends, even relatives.
I see them only once a year, and this is it over here.
This annual gathering to bring in the new year has shaped the younger generation.
So, when Grandpa can't do mochi pounding anymore, I'm hoping that me and my brothers, and my
generation will be able to pursue our goals and dreams, and then it'll be our turn.
Although Carolyn is not there to celebrate the annual mochi pounding, her spirit still
lingers.
I'm sure she is looking down on us.
And maybe that's why it's clearing up, and this morning the wind
died down.
So, I'm sure she's helping us with that, too, yeah?

We take you now to Waimea on Hawai'i Island, where students at Hawaii Preparatory Academy
Middle School lead us through the step-by-step process
of saddling a horse, paniolo style.
Did you know that in rodeo, there are different saddles for different events?
Putting on your saddle correctly is important and vital for competing
safely and efficiently.
First things first, tie your horse to the trailer, using a slipknot.
Then, go and get your pad ...
And your saddle.
The next thing you want to do is reach under the horse and grab the cinch.
String the latigo through the buckle on the cinch, and then string it through
the saddle, and back once more.
Hook the latigo onto the buckle so that the saddle doesn't move.
Reach under the horse and grab the back cinch, then buckle it to the leather strap.
Reach around the front of horse, and grab the breast collar.
String the leather strap through the metal ring on the front of the saddle, then buckle
the strap to the buckle.
Clip the strap to the ring on the cinch.
The paniolo, or the Hawaiian cowboys, are greatly known all over the world, especially
with the fame and talent of Waimea's very own Ikua Purdy, who
in 1908 won the World Steer Roping Championships in
Cheyenne, Wyoming.
This is Lia Craven from Hawaii Preparatory Academy, for HIKI NŌ.
We are back on the North Shore of Kauai in Kilauea, at Anaina Hou Community Park.
This park includes a mini golf course, botanical gardens,
a playground, skate park, and an education center.
It also includes a farmers market every Saturday,
Monday, and Tuesday.
Anaina Hou provides an enjoyable place for locals and visitors alike.
Our next story comes from the Mānoa District of O'ahu, where students at Saint Francis
School tell the story of a young entrepreneur who named his
innovative business after the woman who inspired him, his
mom.
My mom loved desserts.
I remember the first time she actually bought me my first ice cream maker when
I was six, from I think it was Goodwill or something.
And one of my fondest memories was taking it
home and making ice cream with her, homemade.
I'll always remember that.
Ice cream is a timeless treat that brings joy to everyone, young and old.
But for one ice cream shop owner, it's more than just a dessert.
My mother was diagnosed in 2007.
She was initially diagnosed with Stage One breast cancer, and she
battled long and hard for the next three or four years.
It was a big shock, but after time kinda set in, we
realized the gravity of it.
And she always was positive, you know, whether or not you have cancer or you
don't, or whatever the situation is, that every moment is important.
Me and my mom were very close.
She was a single mother, just raising me, and we had a lot of good times together.
We fought with each other, and it always made us closer, and she
was everything to me.
I wanted to do something that involved business, but also kept her memory
alive.
Lee Wang's love for his mother and his love for science proved to be a powerful combination
that served as a catalyst for his spin on ice cream.
This unique ice cream parlor is located on Kamakee Street in
Kaka'ako, Honolulu, and it was named after his mother, Lucy.
Lucy's Lab is a local ice cream shop where we hand-make lots of crazy, interesting flavors
that you wouldn't find in the supermarket.
So, I came up with a periodic table of flavors because what was really
interesting to me was the food science.
You can really break it down to a formula.
Having the shop means a lot.
It means that I can stretch my creative muscle and explore into new things.
It means I can keep my mom's memory alive and hopefully do
her proud.
While keeping his mother's memory in his heart as well as the outpouring of support from
the community, it was a no-brainer for Lee Wang
to use his success to support others in honor of his mother.
Lucy's Lab is unique when it comes to supporting charities.
Before we take care of anything else, that's where our proceeds go towards.
We should be giving back to the community that gives so much to us.
I think the more people we can reach out as
a business, the more awareness we can bring towards other
charities that do good work towards breast cancer research.
This little ice cream shop is already living up to its spirit namesake.
If the past two years are any indication, Lucy's Lab will continue to be
a driving force in every aspect of Lee Wang's life.
If my mom walked through the door and looked at the success we have, I know she would definitely
be proud of me, but the tiger mom would not let
her [CHUCKLE] give me any compliments about it.
But I know in her heart, she'd be proud of it.
This is Minji Kim from Saint Francis School, for HIKI NŌ.
We take you now to West O'ahu, where students at Nānākuli High and Intermediate School
tell of the special bond between a mother and son that
even silence cannot break.
For Nānākuli High and Intermediate School sophomore Malachi Keohuloa has a life like
most students.
He goes to class, interacts with friends, and does homework.
But his passion is the performing arts, where he spends ten hours after school a week
with the Nānākuli High and Intermediate School
Performing Arts Center.
[MUSIC]
However, Malachi cannot share that passion with his biggest supporter, his mother, as
his mother, Yvette Ibarra is deaf.
I was born deaf.
While my mom was pregnant with me, she had German measles, rubella, and so, when I
grew up, I was very positive about being deaf.
It wasn't a hardship.
For Malachi, joining the performing arts was a natural thing for him to do.
I realized that my son had a passion.
He really loves to dance, he really loves music.
[MUSIC]
I'm just really fond of music, and I thought that maybe joining a performing arts center
would probably help me go more in depth with my passion for
music and dancing, singing.
And now, I guess I like acting.
Some psychiatrists say that people [INDISTINCT].
I guess they're right.
I guess sometimes, it's a little disheartening when your deaf mother is in a crowd at your
show, and she can't hear a word you're saying or singing.
So, I guess you have to, like, really bring your emotions out
when you're on stage.
So, I just enjoy watching his performances.
Most of the time, I do understand, because it's all based on
expression, body language or the feeling.
And so, it's beautiful, and it touches my heart.
Their relationship is no different because of her disability.
I feel like you shouldn't treat your parent any different from other parents just because
they have a disability.
So, I don't treat my mom any different, but I do sometimes keep in mind that she's deaf.
But being deaf is like you can feel the world without hearing sound, and I feel the world
with my heart.

This is Desiree Kanui from Nānākuli High and Intermediate School, for HIKI NŌ.
We're back at the Wailua Heiau Complex on the east side of the island of Kaua'i.
This region was a highly populated and major political and religious
center for the ancient Hawaiians.
The complex is made up of a heiau, which is an ancient Hawaiian
temple, a birthing stone, and a cluster of petroglyphs.
Poli'ahu Heiau is perched high above the Wailua River.
It is assumed to be a luakini heiau, where ruling
chiefs asserted their power and prepared for war by offering human sacrifices.
Near the birth stone, you can find Holoholokū, a large wall structure
assumed to be an ancient house site and the burial ground for
the descendant of Kau'ai's last king, Kaumuali'i.
Our final story comes from the Leeward Coast of O'ahu, where students at Wai'anae High
School introduce us to a female wrestler who has
tackled her toughest opponent to date, her own self-esteem.
Go, go, go, go.
Nice.
Try put that leg down.
Like ...
I have a tendency to just [INDISTINCT].
For Kelly Spencer, this is where she belongs.
[LAUGHTER]
Kelly comes from a family of wrestlers, three generations to be exact.
All boys, except for her.
That one, you're gonna have to improvise [INDISTINCT] really have to get grip on that knee, and
you're gonna have to really drive.
It's that drive which led her here...
Go.
Putting in some extra work with her teammates at their coach's home in Wai'anae.
And this year, I'm planning on wrestling 127 or 132.
That's something she never thought she would say.
Throughout her freshman year, Kelly was constantly ridiculed for her size.
Emotionally, that broke me a lot.
They would say like, Oh, you're fat, you're ugly.
They would send me pictures of like, other animals, and then
they would put my picture next to the picture of the animal.
I guess it's just not something that you want
to hear people say about you.
That kind of lowers your self- esteem.
I didn't find myself as having the perfect body.
When I first stepped foot on the scale, I seen I
was like, two hundred flat, so that's what kinda like triggered my head like, Oh, I don't
want to be overweight.
[INDISTINCT]
So, she jumped at the opportunity.
Kelly is not a person that takes things lightly.
When she puts her mind to it, she puts her mind to it.
You know.
[INDISTINCT]
Double practices, eating healthier, working out, were all just the first steps.
She actually went to see a nutritionist when she was growing up, because of her weight.
Head up, hold it.
Hold it.
Good job.
After one year and seventy pounds later ...
I never quite realized how fast I was losing the weight.
She is an inspiration to all of us, even our boys.
You guys saw our boys, yeah?
They're top shape, but Kelly keeps them in check, you know.
If they like wrestle, she wrestle 'em.
When Kelly first tried out, she was at the heavyweight weight classes.
She's a lot closer to that eleven percent, which means she's not carrying around
that extra weight.
She's a lot stronger today, she's down to her body weight that she should be at.
She works out religiously.
She'll be fine.
Honesty can be a brutal teacher, but Kelly seems as though she's ready to start giving
lessons.
I didn't lose the weight because of the bullies.
I mainly lost the weight because of myself.
You have to learn how to love yourself, before you can
accomplish anything in life.

On the story of "Signs of Aloha," I was the editor.
At first I was the only one doing the project.
Then, another two students got involved with it, and really helped me a lot.
For example, Tiare Lucas helped me try to make the story flow
better, because I'm not good at English.
Angel's a really good editor and I'm really good at the voice over.
And, I'm not as good at the editing as she is.
So that part worked out well.
An editor needs to connect with the audience.
It was really cool to experience someone being so skilled at that.
And, you can learn from them if that's not your talent.
Media gives me a lot of freedom to learn things by myself and work with others.
It helps me connect with other people, too.
