Why Do Humans Take Risks?

Part 2

Hey guys, Culture here.

Today we're going to finish off our discussion on risk-taking; more specifically, we're

going to explore whether our decisions are rational and the tricky tactics employed by

casinos.

And that reminds me, I'm going to finish recounting my love escapade.

Unfortunately.

We left off last time talking about Step 4 in the decision-making process: Weighing the

evidence.

When picking between alternatives, the rational option is the one which gives us the best

value; that is, the most benefit with the least cost.

Nicolas Bernoulli, a Swiss mathematician, challenged this notion in 1713 by creating

the St. Petersburg Paradox.

The St. Petersburg Paradox involves a gambling game in which a coin is flipped multiple times

in a row.

A starting amount of $2 dollars doubles every time a head turns up and the game ends whenever

tails comes up.

The player then collects whatever is in the pot.

The question is: What would be a fair price for the player to pay to enter the game?

What we really need to know is the expected value: that is, how much would the player

usually receive per game?

A bit of high school maths tells us that the expected value is the sum of the values multiplied

by their probabilities.

For example, there is a 1 in 2 chance that the first toss is tails, which would end the

game and the player would receive $2 dollars.

There is a 1 in 4 chance that the first toss is heads and the second toss is tails, which

would pay out $4 dollars and so on.

The issue here is that if we continue along this way we find a trend: The halving probabilities

and doubling rewards give values of 1 that sum up to infinity.

Put simply, the expected payout for this game is an infinite amount of money so players

should be willing to pay any amount to take part purely mathematically.

But Philosopher Ian Hacking had it right when he said "few of us would pay even $25 dollars

to enter such a game," so this conclusion sounds stupid right?

Did someone say stupid?

I'm back bitches.

When we last left off I was at a low point, dejected on the pavement outside of the casino

and with my newfound love Rouge nowhere to be found.

I was determined to get back inside, and so I called up the only friend I had in Las Vegas:

Jimmy the Blurter.

Dumb name.

Continue.

F: Jimmy had a penchant for mischief-making and I knew if anyone could help me get past

the guards it was him.

We spent a day at his place meticulously crafting our plan and by the night, we were ready to

put it into action.

In 1738 Daniel Bernoulli, Nicolas Bernoulli's cousin and also a mathematician, provided

his solution to this paradox by creating the expected utility hypothesis.

Without getting bogged down in the actual maths, Bernoulli essentially added a "utility"

function to the equation for expected value to represent how an individual's risk aversion

affects their decision in each case.

Imagine you are offered a choice: You can pay $5 dollars for a 1 in 2 shot at winning

$50 dollars.

Which would you take the chance?

The $50 is pretty tempting, right?

I'd say most people would take the chance.

Now here's another choice: You can pay $5 dollars for a 1 in a billion shot at 25 billion

dollars.

Which one would you choose?

Your answer should, according to the expected value of $25, still be to take the risk since

the expected value is the same.

But this simply isn't true for most people.

For one thing, some people are more risk averse than others and the small probability of winning

would scare them off.

Secondly, someone who is incredibly poor values $5 dollars more highly than someone rich…

you get the picture.

Daniel Bernoulli's utility function added in a factor dependent upon the probability

of winning such that the smaller the probability of winning, the less "utility" the alternate

option has.

Therefore, a rational decision is one in which the selector chooses the alternative with

the highest utility, not the highest value.

Jimmy and I stood around the corner from the casino, the sounds inside were but a faint

din and the smell of vomit emanated from behind a nearby dumpster.

The bouncers stood like sentinels at a fortress, eagle-eyed and wary.

Jimmy and I turned to one another and nodded our heads: It was go-time.

Jimmy strolled out from behind the corner nonchalantly and approached the door to the

casino.

He was mere inches from the bouncers when, quick as a flash, he ripped off his tear-away

shirt and pants and sprinted into the casino.

Did I forget to mention Jimmy is a streaker?

Well yeah, he is.

You're an idiot.

Rational decisions, unlike those that Jimmy makes, follow many axioms of logic.

We might cover logic in another video, but suffice to say for now that people don't

always make the logical decision, instead letting their emotions take control.

Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, cognitive psychologists, performed a study in 1981 proving

one such irrationality that many people utilise in decision-making.

In fact, you guys already know the kind of question that Kahneman and Tversky asked respondents

since I gave it to you at the end of the last episode!

I'll restate it again in short to remind you: There's a disease that is expected

to kill 12000 people, and two vaccines.

The first vaccine will save 3000 people.

The second vaccine has a 1 in 4 chance of saving all 12000 people and a 3 in 4 chance

that no one will be saved.

Which vaccine would you choose?

Hopefully you still have your answer in mind, now let me ask you this: Once again there's

a disease that is expected to kill 12000 people, but this time there are two programs to counter

the disease.

The first program will kill 9000 people.

The second program has a 1 in 4 chance that nobody will die and a 3 in 4 chance that 12000

people will die.

Which program would you choose?

Have a second to think.

Kahneman and Tversky asked similar questions to those I just posed and found that in the

first scenario 72% of respondents preferred the vaccine that saves 3000 people.

In the second scenario, only 22% of respondents preferred the program that kills 9000 people.

But some of you might have already caught on to the trick of this scenario: Based on

expected value and utility, the two scenarios are exactly the same.

All that's changed is that the questions were phrased differently: The vaccines referred

to how many people lived whereas the programs referred to how many people died.

Vaccine 1 and Program 1 had the same outcome however: Both of them saved 3000 people and

killed 9000.

Additionally, Vaccine 2 had the expected value of people saved as Vaccine 1 and the same

is true for Program 2 and Program 1.

Yet still we exhibit some bias because we're distracted by the wording of the question,

a subtle difference.

But the not-so-subtle streaking Jimmy acted as my distraction.

As he raced into the casino the bouncers chased after him, the fatter one huffing and puffing

whilst the slimmer one tripped over chairs and pushed past people.

Very rude.

I could see the look of pure happiness on Jimmy's face and I knew it was now my turn

to find that same happiness.

I stepped into the casino, my heart pounding, and returned to where I had first met Rouge.

But as she entered my view, my heart stopped.

She was there, beautiful as ever, but there was a man with her.

He had his hands all over her and worst of all she lit up at his touch.

That joy that I thought was just for me, she now gave away to this stranger.

I'm…

I'm sorry Culture, please go on.

Yeesh… ah, ahem, right, where was I?

Oh yeah, decision making.

There are some explanations offered up for why we sometimes make irrational decisions.

First of all, there's the comparison of humans to dual processors; that is, we are

capable of making controlled, analytical responses but often use automatic, intuitive processes

for speed since we can't always afford to be as accurate as possible.

"My CPU is a neural net processor, a learning computer"

Another explanation is the "security potential/aspiration" theory which posits that people simplify complex

gambles to the best and worst possible outcomes.

It's a form of dilemmification whereby we create only two alternatives to make choices

easier.

One could also say-

Ah Rouge, I realised then that I was just another tale for you to add to your collection.

Yet despite the cold nature with which you dismissed me, I cared for you.

I still care for you.

I hope these other travellers treat you as well as I did.

Except for that time I spilt my beer on you and the casino staff had to check to make

sure your circuitry wasn't damaged.

Oh the times we had together-

Wait, hold up… "circuitry"?

Pardon?

What do you mean "circuitry"?

The electrical wires which power her display and reels.

Crash, what the… no… okay this is too far, even for you.

Tell me: What is Rouge's last name?

No silly, Rouge is her last name, a nickname if you will.

Her full name is Moola Rouge.

… like a parody of Moulin Rouge?

Like the slot machine, Crash?

Wow, now I get it… you're prejudiced.

I really didn't expect this judgement from you Culture.

And by the way, the politically correct term is "Electronic Gaming Machine" you slot-ist

pig.

No wonder you were so addicted!

EGMs are designed to keep you playing and take you for all you're worth.

The American Gaming Association found that approximately 70% of casino revenue comes

from EGMs alone.

People sit on them all day because they lose track of time in the windowless, clockless,

cavernous expanse of the casino.

NO, YOU'RE WRONG!

ROUGE WAS SPECIAL!

Afraid not Crash, just like every EGM she was specially designed to hook you in and

take your money.

At least in the old days slot machines had actual physical reels and levers.

Each machine would have 3 reels and 22 spaces on each reel.

Of the 22 spaces, 11 would be blank and 11 would be icons with only 1 being a jackpot

symbol.

That made the chance of getting a jackpot 1 in 10648.

Not only were these odds better than modern EGM's, but more importantly they were known

and calculable.

But in 1982 a new technology came onto the market called Virtual Reel Mapping.

This allowed for EGMs to be created which have entirely virtual reels with 516 spaces

each, decreasing the chance of a jackpot to 1 in 137 million; an almost 13000-fold lower

probability than old slot machines.

So Rouge wasn't just one in a million… she was one in 137 million!

I knew she was special.

Not even, Rouge was a liar- I mean, the EGM you played on was a liar.

EGM technology has advanced even further now, with deceptive little tricks to hook players

in.

Imagine the feeling of playing an EGM and being just one symbol off of a jackpot.

You were so close, right?

Well maybe not, after all casinos can actually increase the chance of these so-called "near-misses"

to give players a feeling of temporary satisfaction.

Even back in 1953 psychologist Burrhus Skinner (the same guy behind the Skinner Box experiment)

showed that these near-misses increased player time spent on the machine.

In gambling addicts, a near-miss has even been shown to make the brain respond in the

exact same way it would as if they had won.

They're feeling rewarded for losing, Crash!

It was just a privilege to even be so close to her though…

Another dirty tactic is "starving wheels" in which the number of jackpot icons on one

virtual reel is less than another.

This once again creates that "so close" feeling of near misses, since two of the reels

show up matching jackpot icons more often.

The same trick is used on scratchies where an "almost win" condition is usually put

on the card to raise your hopes.

It's for sketchy reasons like these that Virtual Reel Mapping is banned in Australia

and the UK.

The only thing I'm starved of is Rouge's attention…

But even without Virtual Reel Mapping these EGMs trick you!

Old slot machines used to just have one pay-line, but new EGMs have multiple pay-lines.

Picture the slots from the Game Corner in Pokémon.

Let's say that you bet $1 dollar for each pay-line up to a total of $5 dollars for 5

pay-lines.

Then you match up icons such that you get a small amount of money, say $3 dollars.

Because you got money, the machine lights up and makes sounds all of which are congratulatory…

even though you actually just lost $2 overall.

But despite your conscious awareness of this, your brain still interprets these visual and

auditory signals as a win and so you keep playing to feed off of the high.

Gamblers have been known to sit at a machine for 12 hours or more on end, slowly losing

money in this fashion.

They call it "the zone", a kind of enduring high that makes the gambler forget about their

worries.

Gamblers have even forgotten basic bodily requirements, wetting themselves right there

in front of the machine… just like some MMORPG players I know.

Oh come one, that was one time!

And besides, it was different with Rouge.

She took all my cares away.

Yeah, and all your money too, I'm guessing.

Any casino game you can think of always favours the house in the long run.

Casinos aim to maximise the amount of time you spend playing their games and minimise

the amount of time per gamble to increase their profits.

I'm sorry buddy but to them you're just another sucker, and Rouge is a part of that.

Don't let this Martingale Mistress convince you you're an MVG.

You're… you're right.

I need to let her go.

Thanks Culture.

No problem Crash, I'm just happy that… wait, what am I talking about?!

You made that whole story up!

You even said you went to Vegas in 1998!

I may have exaggerated that part for dramatic effect but my love affair with Rouge was all

true, I swear.

But you said you brought her up to your room and uh… y'know… "made love to her."

None of that makes sense now that I know she's a slot machine!

Oh I did though Culture.

I entered my tokens, I pushed all the right buttons and then…

BOOM!

Jackpot.

And on that image, see you next week everybody!

Our EU-funded Project - Duration: 7:58.

Oh what a great idea!

Now I'm going to the meeting.

We'll be 6 partners.

We work on a project funded by the EU.

Let's go!

Oh, wow, our meeting will take place in the school of l'Epee!

Yes! Look!

Remember I couldn't enter the school?

Now we should be able to get in...

Come

Hey! My name is Mathias, I'm from Germany.

From Berlin acually.

I'm excited to get in and discuss about our project.

How do you feel about getting inside l'Epee's school?

Oh I have read so much about this school before.

L'Epee, Massieu, Siccard, Clerc, they all come from here.

I can't believe it. Amazing!

That's true!

Do you remember I was blocked by this gate?

Now I'll pass!

Come!

Yes! I'm in!

And wow, this is the first deaf school of the world.

Founded by this man.

His name is Abbe de l'Epee

Here l'epee is on his deathbed. (This was painted by a deaf person)

People are mourning over here.

We're now discussing our EU-funded project.

But what is this project actually about?

It's for children who are looking for information in sign language on the internet.

And also an eBook with educational information in international sign.

It will cover many interesting topics!

That looks very interesting. I can't wait.

But first we need to complete the project.

After 2,5 years you can visit and enjoy the website, right?

Yes!

Oh great!

Now we'll work hard on this project together, deal?

Deal!

Now we're all enjoying good French food

So, we're 6 partners coming from 5 countries.

Belgium, France, Germany, Italia and Romania

Look!

The first deaf school is very beautiful.

How did the process go for deaf people?

The oral way... Not using sign language!

Hi guys!

It's Kyung-Ah from Ryu's Penna

I'm going to get a tattoo today

Honestly..

If you've seen my tattoo Q&A clip

I have some tattoos

But, I don't like two of them

So, I came to rescue them

Before we go into the clip

The like and subscribe button is on the bottom, so please click it!

Then, shall we go together?

Go go~

place : Ilsan Banulzip Shall we take a view of the shop?

Wow it has two beds!

As a tattoo shop, there were many sketches

This is ink for tattoos

Here is the place for sketching

The atmosphere was good

The first cover I'll do is the small rose on my ankle

First, we start by pasting the design I want on the spot!

The design is cute

It's too cute!

Are you taking this clip?

-Yeah

It's been a long time since my last tattoo

About

Now…

A year?

A year and a half?

-Kyung-Ah, how do you feel of your tattoo in a while?

Uh,,,

a little nervous...!

(head hurt)

LOL got punished from lying

Real start!

The back side is okay

I can take it

But the front hurts, the bone part

Before I came here, I regretted wearing a sleeveless shirt

But I'm sweating now LOL

Ouch, it hurts

- Tattooist Hae Min: But Kyung-Ah is enduring it well

Ha.. enduring is hot

Getting the line of the design

Uh.. it hurts

(I'm not cursing) LOL

Now I got used to it

-Are you sure?

Yes..

(bluffing) It only hurts at first

-Your face was twisted

(bluffing)That was only on the first time

Finally, the line was finished -Wow..it looks like it'll hurt

Now, coloring time!

Suddenly got quiet LOL

LOL Excuse me

Are you getting a tattoo?

- Um… no..

-I'm hurting for you

-You're peaceful but I'm feeling pain

<I'm hurting for you, guys!> LOL

Doesn't the coloring process look pretty? -Tattooist Hae Min : Wow, you're strong

-How can a person getting a tattoo look so peaceful?

It's okay guys

-I heard that the ankle hurts a lot when you get a tattoo

But, the ankle bone

It hurts when it passes there

Except there, it's okay

Like needles? LOL

Like needles? LOL

-It feels like I'm getting poked

-Tattooist Hae Min : Oh, it's cute

Really cute!

Finally, the ankle is finished

If you erase the ink left, it's done!

Dancing flamenco ice cream LOL

Next is the wrist!

The text was crushed

I decided to leave the text concept!

The text is really thin

-How can you look so peaceful?

-Guys, tattoo isn't a peaceful act

(The text I'll do!, But why were you taking this? LOL) This time it hurts a bit

-Finally, you can see her painful face guys! (Frowning LOL)

-Finally her forehead frowns (Why do you like me sick brother?)

The wrist is finished also!

I added a red outline to the star Does that look really neat?

Jin Chul, who followed me decided to get a tattoo!

-You can do it

It doesn't hurt a lot

But I don't know about the top of the foot ( it's a really painful part LOL)

-You can do it!

-Tattooist Hae Min:you can do it!

Cheer up!

-Tattooist Hae Min : Cheer up

-I should have just made my friend listen to me on the phone

LOL Is someone killing you?

-Tattooist Hae Min (Banulzip) : Just before death

- Ah wait! *100000

- Wait a minute!

-Tattooist Hae Min : It get's ugly if you move

Yeah, don't move

-Tattooist Hae Min : I'll do it now

-Tattooist Hae Min (Banulzip): May I start?

- Yup (What about his first tattoo?)

- Wow, it hurts too much

- How can she not scream even once?

-It really hurts

Well, the tattoo is pretty!

Well guys, I got 2 tattoos today

I might have looked peaceful but..

Jin Chul showed you instead LOL

Metroid : A Personal Retrospective & Metroid Prime Thoughts - Duration: 23:58.

Metroid is an important video game series to me.

I haven't finished any Metroid game other than Other M, (slight pause) and Samus Returns

barely a few weeks ago, however.

But i've spent years playing this series.

I wanted to make this video a Metroid Prime review at first.

But after some thought, i realized that half of what i wanted to say was related to my

own experience of the entire franchise.

So don't expect this video to be on an academic level of game design analysis.

I will talk about it, but it won't be the main subject.

This video will be an entire retrospective on my complicated and messy relationship with this series :

Like a lot of people my age, i've grown up playing Super Smash Brothers games.

That's when i first heard of a lot of Nintendo IPs i would never have checked out before

playing Melee.

Starfox, Fire Emblem, and obviously, Metroid.

In around 2008, i checked out a used game store.

That's when i noticed Metroid Fusion, and that's when i went "Hey, that's the

robot from Melee !" and proceeded to plead with my mother to buy the game for me.

As kind as she was, she did.

And i played this game so much.

I never went through the later parts of the game because i sucked at it, but i still had

a blast.

The game terrified me.

It was my first sample of the Metroid series and i loved everything about it.

The creepy, claustrophobic atmosphere, the nerve/anxiety-inducing?

combat that i failed horribly at, the constant fear of having to meet the SA-X…

I expected something totally different because of Smash Brothers, imagining a Samus that

just kicks ass and destroys everything with her badass canon.

And i was so wrong.

In this game, Samus feels weak, and you're just trying to get your own power back, while

trying to resist an enemy that is exactly as strong as you should be.

That's where i think Fusion excels, as much in the game design philosophy as story wise.

Having to grab your abilities back while realizing how much of a threat you can actually be to

everything you've destroyed.

This is even more emphasized when you realize that Fusion is the last game in the timeline,

and you start to realize how deadly you actually are.

You've destroyed countless planets, slaughtered an entire species: one of the most deadly

foes the galaxy had.

Also i never finished this game.

I definitely will very soon.

A few years later, i discovered the wonders of emulation.

That was the moment of my life when i downloaded Visual Boy Advance and downloaded countless

games that i played for 10 minutes and then never played them ever again.

Zero Mission was one of them.

I never really found a way to really enjoy this game until recently.

I still enjoyed the way Samus was controlled almost the same as in Fusion, but i couldn't

even get through upper Brinstar.

The atmosphere didn't really catch my eye either compared to Fusion.

It just felt plain and classic to me back then.

Little did i know that this game was actually a remake later on.

Oh.

I don't even remember if i played Metroid 2, but if i did it must have been for 5 minutes.

Even now, i don't really feel like playing it for 2 obvious reasons.

But who knows, maybe i will one day.

I also learned a lot about the games from YouTube, especially Super Metroid unfortunately,

because i got myself spoiled from beginning to end.

But then, around 2010, i decided to buy Super Metroid on the Wii Shop Channel.

I plugged my gamecube controller in, and i launched the game.

I've spent a long time on this game.

I don't know how much i played the game on the Wii, but i got stuck very easily and

still could never get bored of it.

I love absolutely everything about this game, and i think this is my favorite Metroid game,

and my favorite SNES game if Earthbound didn't exist.

The story's simple, find the Metroid Larva and bring it back.

You then go back to planet Zebes years after you fucked everything up.

No more upbeat music, the atmosphere is grey, it's constantly raining, the caverns seem empty…

It's super good.

You progress through the game flawlessly, and every new upgrade you obtain makes you

feel like you're growing stronger and stronger.

They're balanced just right so that you can see how much of an improvement you get,

but they're not broken to the point of making the game too easy.

The game is absolutely gorgeous and the sound ambiance is haunting from the soothing music

to the echoing sound effects.

There's such an overwhelming amount of zones and roads that it's almost a labyrinth.

But for the first time you can check out the map, and you can even see if you've missed

items.

To go to a certain place, there are tons of possibilites.

Some are longer than others, but every time you need to backtrack, it never feels like

a chore.

There's always something to do; you can find some missile and energy upgrades or you

can just blast through new shortcuts.

Samus is fast and responsive, and it never takes more than a few minutes to get where

you need to go because there's always this satisfaction and anticipation of growing stronger

and going where you need to go next.

The mute storytelling is also fascinating, and it's all about interpretation which

gives even more life and death to the environments and the story.

I freaking love it.

I bought the game again on Wii U and played through it until ridley last year but i fucked

it up and was completely annihilated by Ridley, and i'm so so so impatient to go through

the game a third time now that i've got my SNES mini.

It was around the same time when i got my hands on Metroid Other M. I don't remember

exactly if it was after or before Super but it's not really important.

Unlike a lot of people, i enjoyed Other M. Now's the time where you boo and laugh at me.

Done ? Okay.

I think if i played the game now i would definitely understand the points of view of a lot of people.

I've watched tons and tons of game critics just destroy the game on so many levels that

i almost feel bad for the developers.

The controls are obnoxious, the story is cheesy and stupid as hell (though i do like how ridiculous

and over dramatic it is), and the level design is extremely linear and the upgrade system

is ridiculous.

I could go on and on about it's flaws but GamingBritShow makes a living out of destroying

the fuck out of this game so you should just watch his videos if you want to understand

what's wrong with it.

I don't really know how to defend this game other than i simply enjoyed playing through it.

I've grown up with nothing but nintendo games and a few low spec steam games like half life,

and Other M was pretty much my first "modern day big mature production game", though

this game is literally anything but Mature.

it was probably the first full dubbed console game i've ever played, and i can't deny

i had a generally positive opinion of it.

It's flashy, pretty, satisfying to control, it was brain dead and i didn't have to think

much to go on with the game...

And there's still a sense of immersion i really enjoyed.

It's the first Metroid game where we're not all alone in a giant planet or station.

Here we have comrades, some more useful than others, but as the game progresses more and

more teammates die.

Then the sense of dread and isolation comes back little by little, like it's a survival

game, until you're one of the only ones left.

I mean i'm talking about memories from seven years ago so it's still blurry, and if i

played the game again today i would most likely be disappointed and my past experience would

end up being negative and i don't really want that.

At one point i then bought Metroid Prime Trilogy.

I only played through Prime for barely a couple of hours, but even then, i felt like there

was something wrong.

It was weird.

Nothing felt right or responsive, i just couldn't get it.

But back then i blamed that on the game and never gave it much thought and dropped it

without much remorse.

The game just bored me and i couldn't get into it at all.

And then years passed and passed, Nintendo not releasing a single game, until 2016 when

AM2R finally releases and got the famous DMCA controversy.

Great move Nintendo, you guys don't even have to make games to raise awareness on the

good ones instead of making them yourselves !

I didn't play it though.

I grew tired of Metroid and didn't even feel like playing it at all.

That's until they announced Prime 4 and Samus Returns at E3.

If you've watched my review of Samus Returns, you know my thoughts about the announcements.

So i guess i just ordered the collector's edition of Samus Returns to show my support,

though i didn't expect that much from the game.

Joke's on me, i loved every bit of it.

That's when i suddenly got a surge of inspiration to play through every Metroid game again.

Starting with Zero Mission, not only because it was a remake of the first one, but because

i never really went far with it.

I had such a blast.

I loved everything so much, and i almost never got stuck a single time.

I didn't catch every item but i sure did enjoy getting as much as i possibly could.

The added content, the music, the colorful palette which changes from the rest of the

series…

This game is amazing and one of the best remakes to ever exist.

I couldn't take it anymore.

I needed more.

Time to play AM2R ! Holy shit.

This game is perfect.

I'm glad i didn't play AM2R before Samus Returns so i couldn't instinctively compare

both games constantly, and even here i didn't, but I'm so glad these remakes are different.

If Samus returns is a new take on the 2D Metroid formula and tries to appeal to a new and more

casual audience, AM2R is a total fan service masterpiece.

The music, the artstyle, the polish, the gameplay, the added content, the freedom of level design

interpretation…

Everything about AM2R takes the best from every possible episode and it's just SO

GOOD i can only express my opinion on this game by acting like an excited child.

It's just that fun.

So after going through and loving the hell out of those three games weeks ago, as i was

about to launch Super Metroid, i wanted to try out something new.

I thought it was finally time i played Metroid Prime.

From start to finish.

Once again, i go through the first area, getting used to the controls again, beat the living

crap out of the Parasite, and we're on Tallon IV.

For now i know what to do.

Go the the Chozo Ruins, find my morph ball, charge beam and missiles.

Cool.

Burn the giant flower to the ground.

Cool.

Get the varia suit and go to Magmoor.

Cool.

And here we are, Phendrana Drifts.

The place where i stopped playing Metroid Prime.

And this is when shit goes down.

From now on i'm naked and unaware of where to go.

I progress through the areas as fast as Samus can, realize i can't proceed any further,

go back another way and do that for a good hour.

The music is good, the snowy area gorgeous, what could go wrong ?

Backtracking is clearly the worst part of Prime for me.

It's always been a key part of the series, but the 2D environments were way easier to

apprehend and navigate through than they are here.

Whenever you backtracked through Super, you still had tons of opportunities as to where

to go, to find new items, and you pass through them very quickly.

In Prime, you go through the same kind of backtracking, but you very rarely discover

new areas in the process, or even upgrades.

If you can open a new door, a new lock will appear right behind it.

It seriously makes you feel like every upgrade you get is just absolutely useless.

That's the other part of Metroid Prime that made me extremely disappointed.

The upgrades in the 2D episodes are based on a 2D platforming game design, so that means

you can have a lot of freedom.

You can make Samus jump like crazy, shoot everywhere and make everything explode while

barely batting an eye.

Prime is first person, and you can't get flashy like that.

So it's only natural for the gameplay and controls to slow down to let us catch our

breath, and not make us go through a stroke every time samus jumps.

That's why Samus is slower to control, some upgrades are missing and she can't jump

too high because if she could, you would break the 3D environment.

but come on, don't tell me the space jump had to be downgraded to the point of providing

only one poor shitty additional jump.

In Super, Samus couldn't grab ledges yet but she could at least jump pretty fucking

high and space jump.

So the difficulty resides in knowing where to aim and move, it's more reflex based.

Prime though, even when you're near the end you'll still be struggling to climb

through tons of shitty towers at the exact same speed from the beginning.

Missed a jump ? Go fuck yourself, climb it all back up you fucking idiot.

It's not too bothersome, but it just makes the backtracking feel even worse than it actually

is.

Walking for 5 minutes in the same magmoor caves feels like twenty long minutes and it's

awful.

The artifact quest doesn't make this any better.

2D Metroid combats are also super short.

Like in a 2D zelda game, normal enemies barely take a few hits to kill and you almost had

to kill them if you wanted to proceed through the level but it's never been a problem.

But in Metroid Prime, it's different.

Now, you can just avoid enemies at your leisure.

The presence of the lock on shooting function also makes it easier to hit enemies.

The fights are more similar to a tennis match.

I'm not saying it's bad, on the contrary, they fit well with the atmosphere.

I would have still prefered a more dynamic combat system, but it's not too bad.

The issue is that the enemies all have the same kind of pattern.

White space pirate ? Use the ice beam.

Yellow ? Power beam.

Purple ? Wave beam, etcetera.

It's more about simply dodging slow bullets than actually having any reflexes and skill.

You just need to analyse the enemy and use an according beam.

That's literally all there is to it.

Bosses aren't too bad but they take thousands of years to kill like holy hell, the Ridley

fight is fun but it's just ruined because he takes so long and you literally know all

of his patterns by heart so the fight suddenly loses its fun factor during battle.

I think the final boss is the best in the game, even if it lasts pretty long it's

actually varied enough to keep you entertained.

Prime's upgrades are by far the most underwhelming in the series for me.

Whenever i see a new upgrade, i get excited, like oh god, is it the super missile ? A real

space jump ? Or even SOMETHING NEW that isn't just blindly taken from Super Metroid ?

No.

Fuck you, here's your shitty useless and unreadable visor.

It's so disappointing.

I enjoy the grapple beam but you barely use it.

When it could have been used to create shortcuts, there's nothing.

The super missile was literally useless through the entire game and you never have to even

use it at all to finish the game, it takes too fucking long to use and it's such a

lazy add on that it actually depletes your missile counter instead of an additional Super one. Just... why ?

The morph ball is fun to control, and i definitely understand why they made a pinball game because

the physics is so fun to play with.

Also Samus is faster in Morph ball than by foot.

Okay whatever.

The only other noteworthy upgrades you get are the beams.

Power is the normal one, there's ice, wave, and plasma.

In 2D, all of these are combined into one beam.

They basically overlap.

Which gives off even more of a feeling of power while still keeping the game balanced.

You also don't have to constantly switch them out.

But here, you do.

Even when you need to open a door you've opened hundreds of time, you still do.

It gets old so fast and just adds to the already extremely slow paced progression.

So backtracking is only interesting once you've got every possible upgrade, so you're sure

you're never wasting time.

And even then, it's a hassle, because you have to find those freaking artifacts and

they're just so pointless.

They're like optional collectibles that were forced down into the game's progression

just to make the game longer.

The first 4 games were short as hell, but they were definitely replayable, not only

because upgrades are fun to find, but because the gameplay itself is fun, nerve-wracking,

and based on reflexes.

Metroid Prime isn't.

The map doesn't even show items you haveor don't have.

Just…

Why ? What can you lose from adding that ? I can understand not showing what you've explored

of the area in color because the map is in 3D here, but how was removing the items of

any importance ? It's just frustrating and makes you even more lost for no reason.

The map can barely be seen while playing too because the wii and gamecube screen is so

small, they might as well have just put it away since the rooms are all too big to appear

distinctly on the screen.

Why do i have to come across so many chozo ghosts although they don't even impose any

challenge and i can skip them ? why do they respawn even after you've beaten them ? why

is their battle theme so eerie ? why must i chase these boring artifacts in the same

place i've been to ten times already ? why are there so many beams, and why are they

so artificially used in battles ? why do i have to change my beam every time i have to

open a door i could open anyway if the beams stacked instead ? why is samus so slow ? why

is the space jump so underwhelming ? why are there so few new additions to the game ?

Truth is, most of these can be answered in one sentence : Because things changed.

Most of these changes are due to the change to 3D, and a lot of people have been saying

the same thing : Because it couldn't be transported entirely during the 3D jump.

Because of that, most powerups and upgrades feel extremely underwhelming.

But here's my main issue : Did Retro Studios really have to try so hard to mix the classic

Metroid touch in a modern 3D setup ? I feel like it didn't.

The Metroid genre is unfortunately next to impossible to transplant into 3D.

The entire gameplay, level and game design is based on an XY axis.

Prime, is XYZ.

Enemies can't be hit with Samus 2D aiming.

They can now move in depth, and dodge you from the sides.

So having a lock on system seemed only natural.

And the FPS formula doesn't even seem that far fetched.

It was a fairly recent genre, and it's even more immersive thanks to this point of view.

You can see your visor getting affected by the environment, and the amount of detail

is top notch.

I can't fault Retro for the job they did here.

I still find it honorable and crazy, how they managed to transplant the metroidvania idea

in a 3D environment, but there are just too many things that just don't work here.

Not only because of the transition, but also because the game feels like it's filled

with unnecessary content that just breaks the immersion.

And that's a shame, because everything else is immersive as hell, and it's probably

the best at doing that.

The lore you can learn and analyze, the amount of environment and graphic detail is crazy

for the gamecube, the music is pretty good…

But everything else feels like it falls short, even as a standalone game.

Other M had a 3rd person approach and, as far as the flaws of this game go, i still

think this game proved that 3rd person view for a 3D Metroid game COULD work.

Too bad the game was so poorly designed.

The game is as fast paced as a 2D Metroid Game, and i didn't have any issues going

through the game, because Samus controls just like she does in Super, she's fast, agile,

and you never have to spend hours backtracking.

Prime is definitely a better game than Other M's mess though, and I think that's because

Retro was fascinated by Metroid and had an immense respect with it.

I had a similar sensation while playing through Dark Souls.

When you think about it they're really similar games with a similar level design, though

Dark Souls definitely has more shortcuts than Prime does.

And it's hilarious because i felt like there clearly weren't enough in Dark Souls, but

in Prime, the main point of the game is exploration and immersion.

So going back through the same hundreds of rooms, as slow as a snail, not discovering

any new upgrades, it all felt DRAINING.

Whenever i stopped playing i felt like i couldn't take the game on anymore, not even because

the game is a challenge, just because i felt like i was wasting my time playing through

it.

I tried.

I seriously tried.

I was so hyped and looking forward to how they changed the formula, and to my disappointment

it just didn't click for me.

Even as a standalone game i just can't get any enjoyment from this game.

It's just trying way too hard to replicate what Super Metroid made me feel like, and

i felt like the game was taking me for an idiot.

Because this formula just doesn't work here.

I'm playing through Prime 2 as I'm writing this right now and it's already so much

more enjoyable to me.

The beams actually have completely different structures and i love it.

The dark and light world system is classic but it's such a breath of fresh air, it

actually makes me feel like i'm playing a real new game.

I feel like Samus is faster from the first game, but maybe it's just a placebo because

there's way less backtracking.

Maybe it's all just me, but i hated playing through Prime.

I like everything about Prime except actually playing it.

The lore, the ambiance, the music, discovering Talloon is all so great until you realize

this drags on for far too long than it should.

And that's when the flaws start to show, and once you notice them it's next to impossible

to think of anything else.

It's like eating a perfectly fine loaf of bread and realizing there's mold on the

other end and you start to regret it.

Pardon the shitty metaphor but that's the only way i can explain my enjoyment of the

game.

It's just not for me, and for that reason it just makes me sad more than angry, because

that's what Metroid has been for the past 15 years.

And there's another one in the making, and like usual, everyone is gonna love it, and

maybe even I will enjoy it, but i'm getting less and less hyped about this.

I want something new.

Something different, that plays different and makes me feel good.

And no matter what i think about the Prime series, it's still Metroid and i think Retro

Studios gave it their all to provide us with a memorable game.

If you're a Metroid fan, i hope you can understand my affection and the appeal I find

in this series, even if i actually never got too deep into it.

But it's by far one of the most interesting Nintendo IPs there is, and I'm sure you'll

agree with me on that.

Now's the time to show that to Nintendo, now that the license is finally back on track.

If you're a Prime fan and you're pissed off about my thoughts on this game, I'm

sorry.

I probably feel worse about it than you do.

If you've never played a Metroid game, please hop on this series as soon as possible.

This has been a very long video, but i could never be happier to give my thoughts on this

entire series.

Thank you so much for sticking until the end.

If you wish to see more Metroid content, i really recommend you to check out The Geek

Critique's and KingdomKlannad's YouTube channels.

They provide a lot of interesting Metroid content.

For now, I'm done with Metroid videos for a while.

I don't know what my next video will be, but in the meantime you can always give me

recommendations.

Be it to improve my content, or to give me some ideas.

In the meantime take care of yourself, and i hope you have a good day.

I'll see you around.

Unboxing S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla 2016 Godzilla Store Limited Color version (Eng Sub) - Duration: 8:58.

Today I'm opening some

S.H. MonsterArts figures again.

These are Limited Edition figures

from the Godzilla Store.

So let's check it out!

First, we needed to buy

the Shin Godzilla (Godzilla 2016) DVD & Blu-ray box set.

This box included a code for the purchase of a limited edition figure.

Here is the special advanced purchase ticket.

Then we could use this code to pre-order the limited edition figures

the Godzilla Store limited color versions

of the second, third, and fourth forms.

So it took a lot of effort to get them.

Finally I got them.

Let's open them!

Let's start from the Second Form and the Third Form.

And I'm opening the Fourth Form.

I see.

This looks amazing!

Cool.

The inside of the package looks simple.

OK

The texture is the same as other Fourth Form figures.

So I took out all of the figures.

It looks a bit bumpy

but they're actually smooth.

When we look at them closely

they look like they are made of wood.

This color is really ......

woody.

But when I touch it, I feel like I'm touching the other Shin Godzilla figures that I have.

This can open its mouth.

Can this one open its mouth as well?

This is as wide as it'll go.

As usual, the Second Form

doesn't have hands.

He still has fins.

Cute!

This is the Third Form.

Ouch ouch!

He can nod his head

and open his mouth like this.

And this is the Fourth Form.

This color gives off the impression

that it's a very sturdy figure.

This is so different.

Compared to the other Shin-Godzilla figures,

this gave me a different impression.

This reminds me

of that.

This figure is a little glossy.

It looks like fried chicken.

It might be yummy.

Looks tasty!

Shin-Godzilla looks tasty.

Let's open his mouth.

This mode was made

to be scanned as a reference

when making the CGI for the movie.

This was created to make the movie.

The computer artists need the details

of every single body part.

So this sample design is

used for

CGI.

On the back of the box

there is a description of these figures.

Actually

The sample models of

the Second Form and the Third Form

didn't exist.

So their CG models were made

from scratch.

Actual models were apparently only made

for the Fourth Form.

Today I opened the

S.H. MonsterArts

Shin Godzilla

The second, third,

and also fourth form

Godzilla Store limited color version.

So big.

As for my feedback,

first, I was attracted by the fact

that they were limited to the Godzilla Store.

So I bought them.

This model design

has originality.

They give us totally different impression

compared to former S.H. MonsterArts

Shin-Godzilla figures.

I didn't expect the model design

version of the third form and the second form

would be commercialized.

They stand out among

the other figures in my collection.

I think I will put it on my desk at work.

I don't want it be stolen.

That's it.

Thank you for watching. Bye!

Which Would YOU Choose? - Duration: 14:19.

Reading Comments #1 - Duration: 11:32.

Hello my name is Nonato and today I'm here to read some comments made by

you here on Youtube. Let's go!

"Hey there! How does wearing a rubber band around your fingers help?"

Well I use a rubber band in my left hand because it's not my strongest hand.

I decided to do something that force my left hand to become stronger.

I use this rubber band and I do some turns...

"At 1:10 how to you make this harmonic?"

Well Bruno, this harmonic from "As I Am" it's very simple.

In fact we just pick the string and...

when you play downstroke your thumb more or less leftover like this...

So we tend to put away

and I actually let it on purpose to push up the string very slowly.

"This is virtually flawless. Well done on matching Ron's ridiculous fretwork."

Okay, thanks a lot "BDaMonkey"

This band is called "Blotted Science"

it's incredible...

Go and do some search on Google about Ron Jarzombek and Blotted Science.

"Hey Nonato I'm waiting for Top Gear..."

Look man...

I think "Top Gear" it's the major challenge to most of guitarists who plays

video game music here on Youtube...

Everyone loves the "Top Gear" theme here in Brazil.

This weekend I watched the "Video Games Live" show

and Tommy Tallarico was talking about how many Brazilian fans

wanted that soundtrack on the repertoire

and actually he played and it was thrilling...

and he (Matheus) asked to me to play that song a long time ago

to play the "Top Gear" song... I can play that song on guitar

however...

I promised to him that I'll record it on the acoustic guitar...

So I will try hehehe.

I'll record it for sure! Thanks Matheus for stay following my work here on Youtube.

"Majority of humans would say that knowing how to play guitar it's equal to

the ability to strum open chords... possibly whilst singing and Melody.

False.

Please ask anyone you might consider to (or wonder might)

be a musician to watch, practice and play this specific string picking arrangement.

If they can, consider them a musician. They are legit. Props to this fella."

Man...

I don't know what to say... Thanks a lot. Really, thanks a lot.

This is so important to me. I keep doing videos on YouTube mostly because of these comments.

This is very inspiring to me as a musician really.

The arrangement of "Marry Me" I made I think... five years ago.

It all started with a simple fingerpicking exercise.

Next!

"My former guitar teacher used to say that every good guitarist play seriously, without facial expressions...

He was right!"

Thank you Huriel.

It was on the "Braving The Seas" video, from the band "Myrath".

First of all: Know this band "Myrath".

You must know this band "Myrath".

And...

Answering Huriel, man...

I am a little bit serious while playing.

I'm not used to make "guitar faces"

I'm not used to make faces to play, I don't move a lot,

I use the guitar up in the chest, I do not use the guitar down there...

"Great cover! I wish I was that good.

How long did it take to master and how did you master it?"

"The Glass Prison" was a

great challenge to me.

I never tried to play this song entirely.

When I decided to record "The Glass Prison"

I was trying to learn every single part slowly.

I played everything basically by ear

but I think that I spent around two days

practicing the song for a lot of hours.

Two days totally focused.

"Is that a custom ibanez RG7321?"

Hell yeah!

Yeah, this is a custom "Ibanez"

'Ibanez' I don't know how to say "Ibanez"

or if it's "Ibanez" or "Ibánez" or 'Ibañez'...

I don't know heheheh...

I think I got some pics

of the

customization.

I will put the

link here for you to see the pics.

"Best wishes to you... In future you will be

a great guitarist like Andy James."

Oh!

Thanks a lot.

This was my first video of this playlist.

A lot of people suggested me another song from Andy James

and for sure I will record it. I just need some time hehehehe...

Of course that I am not Andy James and

I not even close of his guitar technique

but I think that I can play like him in some way

in fact this was an opportunity to learn how his technique works.

When you try to play something from other musician

you learn a lot from this musician.

Just by playing like him or just by trying to play like him.

So that was a great exercise to me.

Let's go!

"Outstanding playing following the song line with

accents and dynamics really beautiful! Congratulations! By the way what model is

that Takamine? Sounds great, not because of the guitar itself."

First of all thanks a lot Georgi.

This guitar is a Tanglewood guitar

it has a great importance to my life as a musician.

"My Lord Jesus, one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard!

You should bring more videos like this from 'Brazilian Taste',

I hope you continue with this great job

I know it sounds like 'old' comment but I was completely sincere. A hug!"

Where do I start... Heheheheh

First of all, thanks a lot Samuel. Man, this video of "Smoke On The Water"

and the others that I made on "Brazilian Taste",

it was very complicated to record.

And not just to record but to work on the creation process.

As you probably saw on the credits at the end of the video,

I was the producer, idealizer and the arranger of the project,

and pretty much the sponsor as well because I've hit the whole financial side

I had to invest too... I had help from some friends

It was a help with reducing other costs that I would have to afford

as makeup for the girls, and boys and girls dress...

What else... The movie people who did the filming, the editing, the whole recording, anyway.

It was a project that took a lot of energy from me.

In addition to having to spend about fifty hours of work per arrangement,

alone at home here in my room,

I spent several hours later with a studio to rehearse with all the people

and everyone there who is watching me, who has a band,

knows how it is difficult to schedule a rehearsal.

So imagine setting up a rehearsal with different members of each video with different agendas,

so it was a situation ... So it was an incredible experience for me as a 'Band-leader',

but it was very difficult in other points.

First of all, after I did the four videos, I only had a budget for that,

and it was a big budget for me, a big one...

I spent money that I did not have.

It gives a certain frustration after you do a job in that capacity,

you know, with a lot of commitment, a lot of quality, everyone involved

and you do not have a due support. Here in Brazil the situation is a bit difficult

when it comes to music.

It seems like the ideal is that we should be as simple as possible

and talk about stupid things you know?

The more stupid we look, I think we have more reach.

I do not say it just on Youtube here, but in music too.

We have a dozen artists here...

Anyway, it's very difficult to talk about this, but

anyway, thank you very much for your comment.

It was an excellent job, I was really proud,

but unfortunately I could not continue it for financial reasons and for other reasons as well.

Who knows in the future I can do some more videos with this aspect of arrangement right? Thank you!

"Even If you know the sound is not as good as you would usually have,

be sure that your presentation is excellent and it sounds

very good neverthless...

And still a very very good cover as usual. Nonato the boss."

Thanks a lot Chrime. This was from

"Metropolis Part One" from Dream Theater

I tried to record this song with

a simple Stratocaster that I have here but if you watch this video

you'll understand what I am talking about because I described during the song

a little bit of the history of that guitar to me.

"Could you explain how you're playing the parts at 9:48?

The repeating part that repeats about four times really fast."

Okay, this is a question about "The Glass Prison" video and I know the part that you are talking about...

It's a very hard part.

In fact I don't know if John Petrucci plays like that

because I never... I think that I never watched John Petrucci playing "The Glass Prison" live

"I can't believe I'm only just now seeing this. Awesome!"

This was from my cover of "God Of War 3".

I don't know what to say about this comment because

Garard Marino was the composer of this song...

So...

To read a comment from Garard Marino for me it's incredible!

Thanks a lot for watching my video Gerard!

Another inspiring comment...

a very inspiring comment.

That's it thanks a lot for watching

See you soon!

G'ma Thinks Men Are There To Kidnap Grandson, But What They Do Next Leaves Her In Tears. - Duration: 3:54.

G'ma Thinks Men Are There To Kidnap Grandson, But What They Do Next Leaves Her In Tears.

The way things are these days, you can never be too careful.

We hear stories all the time about children who are abducted or hurt.

It's not a bad thing to be cautious.

That's why it's understandable that Saundra Watts was a little concerned when her 10-year-old

grandson Jaden told her two men had approached him and offered to buy him an Xbox One game

console.

Saundra and Jaden had been out running errands together.

First, they took Saundra's dog to the groomer's, then Saundra went to get her makeup done.

She told Jaden he could go to the nearby GameStop while he waited for her.

All of a sudden, he ran back into the salon.

"He's jumping up and down, saying, 'Nana!

Nana!

Nana!

These two guys want to buy me an Xbox.

You've got to come right now,'" Saundra recalled.

Immediately her antenna went up.

Saundra is an advocate for abused and neglected children and was worried these men might have

an ulterior motive.

"The first thing I'm thinking is there's some pedophile trying to buy my grandson an

Xbox," she said.

"So I'm like, I'm going to bust up in there and bust his bubble."

When they got to the store, Jaden introduced her to the men who had offered to buy him

the game.

What one of them said next made Saundra's jaw drop.

"Ma'am my name is Keith Marshall and this is Rob Kelley and we play for the Washington

Redskins and we would love to buy your son an Xbox one for his birthday," they told

her.

Apparently, the two pro football players overheard Jaden mention that he had been wanting an

Xbox for the past several years but his parents couldn't afford one.

That's when Marshall asked Kelley if he wanted to go in on one with him and Kelley

agreed.

"I was cool with it," Kelley said.

"I wish someone would've done something like that for me when I was growing up.

His family is probably able to do whatever they want, but everybody is not able to have

the stuff that we have the luxury of having.

… To make an impact on somebody, I have no problem with it."

Jaden was over the moon.

He asked if he could get a picture with the players, which they happily agreed to.

As they left the store, Saundra said he "flew on cloud nine to the car."

Joey Snapp was in the store at the time of the inspiring exchange and posted about it

on Facebook.

He said he was impressed not only with what these football players had done, but also

that they didn't seek any praise or recognition for their kind deed.

"My jaw hit the floor watching this," he wrote.

"So they buy him the Xbox and a game and they take pictures with the child and go on

about their day.

I didn't even know what to say.

It was such a good moment from 2 guys who I will forever be a fan of from this day on."

Kelley said they didn't do it for the praise.

"The family wanted a picture that they could have, so they took one, but we didn't post

anything," he said.

"Stuff like that is done from the heart.

That was something that we just did and it ain't gotta be broadcasted.

… Doing that, it felt so good just knowing that I didn't have no ties to that kid,

I didn't have to do that.

It felt good."

For Jaden, those moments with Marshall and Kelley will be ones he won't soon forget.

"The next morning, he woke up and looked at me and said, 'Nana, I had a dream that

I was in a GameStop and two Redskins players bought me an Xbox,'" Saundra laughed.

"I said, 'That wasn't a dream, you dodo, that really happened.'

It was un-be-lievable.

Unbelievable.

He's just such a good kid and it was just such a blessing.

It was just so wonderful, the experience of a lifetime."
