What's up guys it's Griffin and welcome back to my channel. For today's video
I'm actually doing something so different from anything I've done in a long time
I had a ghost hunting series which I was really enjoying for a little bit but that
kinda got away from me and I wasn't having that much fun
with it so I decided that I wanted to start doing some murder mysteries
videos because I know that there are a few different Youtubers that do these like
like Bella Fiori and Kendall Rae
Shane has even done them. So many people do them and I've been obsessed
with them so I thought I would do my own
I'm going to start off with a case from 1969
I want to eventually start doing cases that need solving
but for right now while I'm starting the series I want to do cases that are unsolved
but they have a lot of information on them
On June 14th of 1969, 6 year old Dennis Martin spent
spent Fathers Day weekend with his grandpa, dad
and 9 year old brother at Great Smokey Mountain Park and that
is the day that he went missing. They had traveled from their home in Knoxville
Tennessee to the park which isn't that far
I'll actually show a map right here about how far they traveled
but they were here pretty often and they liked hiking
Dennis was a quiet boy who was actually in special education classes
at his school. Nothing too limiting or
any major disability but his mental age was about
6 months behind his chronological age. His dad said he wasn't
the type to call out for help but if someone
was calling his name he would answer. The day before they hiked from
Cades Cove to Russel Field
and then this day they hiked from Russel Field to Spence Field
and they were planning on camping there overnight
Spence Field only had two hiking trails, one jeep trail and
two different shelters. As they were settling in to the camp ground
a family approached them with two young boys and said
Hey would your boys like to play with our boys they're really bored right now
and they'd love to spend some time just running around
Dennis' dad introduced himself and said "Hi I'm Bill Martin" and teh family said
Oh our last name is Martin as well. And that doesn't
seem like possible I guess because I've
never really gone camping and there's only been two spots
and I was staying in one spot and another family was staying in the other spot and I
introduced myself and the other family was like Oh my last name is Arnlund too
Like that just doesn't happen. It just doesn't add up
Something seemed a little off but he wasn't questioning anything
because nothing had happened yet. At about 4pm the boys started playing
hide and seek. Three of the boys went behind one bush and Dennis
went behind the other and they were planning on scaring the parents but the dad, Bill
was actually watching them play hide and seek
and so he was paying attention to where they were hiding and
the other adults were just talking amongst themselves so they weren't paying attention
The young boys had planned to scare the adults that weren't paying attention
But Dennis' dad had been paying straight attention
to the bush that Dennis went behind. After the children came out to scare the adults
Dennis didn't come out.
I think it's important to mention that
he was wearing a bright red shirt so you would've seen him
run off in about any direction even if it were just in the woods
or towards the trail and I can show you guys where exactly
they were playing hide and seek. Right here
and you can tell there is a bunch of open space behind the bush that he was hiding behind
so even if he just ran off one direction you would be
able to see him and he was also wearing
low cut oxford shoes which aren't the best for
speed and agility and that would just be really hard
to run in those. As soon as his father realizes
he's gone he runs down the nearest
trail for two miles and back and didn't see him or
even a single sign of him or like anything and that does seem like
a clear and obvious choice to just go run down the nearest path.
If I had a kid and they went missing I would
do anything in the world I could to find them
Running two miles down a path seems like
a snap of a finger compares to some of the things people have to do to find their kid
It basically seems like a very obvious choice to me
As soon as the dad got back
The grandpa went straight to the rangers station to report it
It took a little while and he got there around 8:30 because it is
a bit of a hike to get to the rangers station but he reported it as soon as he could
About two hours after Dennis went missing a family that was hiking about
6 miles away reported hearing a loud
"blood-curdling" scream. The son actually pointed to a
a bush immediately after hearing the scream and in that same general direction
It is important to mention that the area that the family was hiking
in is known for having bears and that's actually
what they were there for. They were just trying to look at some bears
and see them in their natural habitat and the
young boy pointed to the bush thinking that he saw a bear and his dad said
no son I don't think that's a bear I think it's a man
with something slung over his shoulder. The authorities actually said
that Dennis being in that area wasn't even physically or
humanly possible because of the time frame that it had happened in
Investigators didn't even mention this to the dad
- that someone had seen someone with something slung over their shoulder
and this made Bill very upset. Because
if there is any chance that could've been Dennis
his dad would've
wanted to check it out. Dwight McCarter who is a retired
Park Ranger actually said that the FBIwas lying about it not being possible
Reporters and locals both say that it
took only about an hour and a half to get from where Dennis was missing
to where the family saw something slung over the shoulder. There were two
different search groups for this entire disappearance. The first was
the local people the park rangers
family friends volunteers anyone
that could help and the other search party consisted of the Green Berets
which is actually one of the US army's special forces
There wasn't anything that needed firearms
I mean some of the park rangers had their guns on them but like
these people were heavily armed and no one knows why. They
didn't release any of what they found which I also think is very suspicious
because if they found nothing why not release that they found nothing
they obviously found something if they're keeping it hidden.
We even tried getting more information after the Freedom of Information act was passed
yet they completely denied releasing any information
They didn't want to release any information. They searched
searched for about 15 days and on the first day
it was raining and it made things really difficult
clues would've been covered. Footprints could have been messed with
rain can have a huge effect on searches like this and
I think it did have a pretty big effect on this one because
it made things hard like they didn't have the right set up
for it. They didn't expect it to rain. It was just a very messy
Day 1 and then day 2 it was very misty
the fog was pretty low
so visibility was limited
However on day 2 a shoe and
sock were found. The sock was determined to be his
but the shoe was not
More than a thousand - more than 1500 people searched for 2 weeks straight
several local men found a footprint of an oxford shoe
about 3.5 miles away but the police dismissed it
And by June 26th nothing new was found and so
they scaled back the search. Then on June 29th
all searches were called off
I'm not sure if the dad was guilty or not I mean no one really is but
if he was innocent imagine people just giving up
no one looking for him anymore.
I mean your son just disappeared out of thin air
and he's gone in these woods somewhere and you have no idea where
he is and everyone is just like - yeah we're done dude, sorry
it's been a few weeks we gave it a shot. I would be
so upset. His dad offered a reward for $5000
for anyone who found substantial information about
where he was or anything
This is actually the equivalent of over $33,000 today
That is a big chunk of money
The lead FBI agent Jim Ryke was actually suspected
of covering up this whole disappearance and multiple others
in the area. He committed suicide for unknown
reasons. There is one more thing I'd like to mention before I get into the
theories. There were also some wild
indigenous people living in the area. So basically they kinda
looked like a Sasquatch kind of thing. They had overgrown their hair.
They were gross and dirty and had been living in the woods and a year
earlier, one of these people had attacked a police officer.
So one of the thoughts about the man with something slung over his shoulder
and the reason why the young boy thought it was a bear might be because
it could have been one of those indigenous people living in the area
because they look like a bear because from afar they look wild
Let's get into these theories. The first theory is that he got lost
and somehow perished. This I don't think is very accurate because
although the first
two or three days were a little rough on the search they were
very thorough on the next couple of days and they looked
pretty much everywhere - in all the nooks and crannies
if he had gotten lost and died or fell somewhere
or anything they would've found his body at least and they didn't
another theory is that he could've been attacked by a bear and taken off
and eaten
This is very possible however they didn't find any blood
although the rain could have washed that away.
within the first day or two. The third theory is that
he was abducted and taken out of the park
His father was the main suspect of this which I can see
people thinking that. When it comes to the father people think that
he told Dennis to stay hidden
and not come out when it was time to scare the adults
and then he was actually the person that
the family saw with the boy slung over his shoulder
I think this is very unlikely because the path that he
ran down wasn't the same path and
also just imagine being in this situation. His dad was
leading the search. He was a big part of this
the dad said that this ruined their family. Years later a reporter went to his house and
he was just like I don't want to talk to you guys. It's been years and I'm just done
The reporter somehow got him to come out on the front porch and the dad said that
it ruined his life. You don't get over something like that
You move forward but you don't get over it. The final theory is that
the indigenous people of the land
took him and made him a part of their tribe or
ate him or killed him or whatever.
an idea is that one of the people
maybe even the one who attacked the police officer a year earlier
abducted him
So with all those theories being said I think the most probable one
is either the bear or being abducted by a local
person. whether or not it
was a human being or a beast of a human being
who was living in the forest it was very likely
that he was abducted especially with no signs being left behind
There were two other disappearances in the area following
Dennis' that I thought I would mention because they are very interesting
The first one is Trenny Gibson. She was a 16 year old
on a class trip
they were just hiking through Spence field. No one saw
where she went she just vanished into thin air
Search dogs actually followed her path to the highway
which I think someone then picked her up
and she was probably kidnapped or something along those lines
but basically she vanished into thin air and there was no
evidence leading to anywhere or anyone
On September 25th of 1981, Polly Melton who was
a 58 year old went missing while she was hiking with two of her friends
Her friends said that she was a little bit overweight
and she wasn't generally like in the front of the group
but she went ahead of them and was going down this hill
and as they saw the back of her head go down the hill they were still walking
they approached the hill and
when they get to the top they can see shes not there
they just assumed she went back to the camp site and
when they got back to the camp site she was gone and basically
she vanished into thin air and again there was no evidence.
At the time, Dennis Martins case was the most publicized case
of any of these and probably still is from that area
just because that park pulls in about $800,000 per year
they don't want to lose money. Neither Trenny Gibson
or Polly Melton's cases were publicized
You can find information on them if you look them up
but they weren't public knowledge to the people in the area and they should've been
That park brought in a lot of money and they knew it. If you guys have any more info on this case
