The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a race relatively new, recreated less than
a century. Part of the toy spaniel that has existed for centuries as a companion
of royalty and nobility. The Cavaliers descend from the same toy spaniels
represented in many paintings of the centuries XVI, XVII and XVIII of famous artists like
Van Dyck and Gainsborough. The spaniels in those paintings had flat heads, high ears
and long noses.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (who should not confused with the King Charles Spaniel) must
its name to the king of England Carlos II (1630-1685), an obsessed of the race that made his
dogs in his bedroom and he took them with him everywhere. It is even said that he published
an edict in which these dogs had the total right to enter any public place.
HISTORY. From the Renaissance, the Spaniels, between
they the predecessors of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, they became very fashionable in the high
spheres. These Cavaliers had a life privileged until the English aristocrats
they were infatuated with the Carlino and later of Japanese Spaniel and Pekingese. It was inevitable
that the Cavalier crossed with these three races and its elongated nose will end up flattening,
giving rise to the ancestors of the current King Charles Spaniel.
As there was no standard for the race and dogs were still not shown, the type and the
size of spaniels dogs bred by The Dukes of Marlborough varied. In the middle
of the nineteenth century, however, breeders English began to organize exhibitions
canines and tried to refine different races dog's. At that time, it was accepted that
the toy dog had a flat face, lower jaw, domed skull and eyes
large, round and frontal. You could say than the King Charles Spaniels, just like
they were represented in paintings of previous centuries, They were almost extinct.
In the 1920s, an American called Roswell Eldridge started looking in England
water dogs that looked like those of the old paintings. He searched for more
five years old, he even took his search at the Crufts Dog Show. Persuaded the Kennel Club
English to allow him to offer 25 sterling, a large sum at that time,
for the best dog and the best bitch of the type seen in the reign of King Charles II. And he offered
this prize for five years.
At the beginning of the 19th century, an attempt was made to find the appearance of the original dogs (snout)
elongated, little stop and flat skull) and finally, in 1928, some results were achieved
satisfactory, thus drafting the standard of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that same
year.
