Out of all of the shows I'm currently watching, I'd say I'm the most invested in three
of them; and at face-value it doesn't seem like they have too much in common.
Every week I'm donning my detective cap and magnifying glass with Layton Mystery,
*release-ing* my inner mahou shoujo with Cardcaptor Sakura, and of course joining in on the shounen
hype that is yet another Boku no Hero exam arc.
Despite being from wildly different genres and targeted to different demographics (kids,
young girls, and young boys respectively, of which I am none), I can't help but think
that there's a common thread shared between these shows that keep me wanting to return
to them.
Care to venture a guess as to what that is?
Well, I think part of it is what you're doing right now.
I think each one of these shows demands participation from the viewer in some way, and in doing
so either increase enjoyability or curtail certain problems that similar shows might
face.
In a way, part of the show transcends what is simply happening on screen, operating within
another dimension that leaves their audiences increasingly satisfied the more they watch.
And what's interesting is that each show embodies the practices of participatory media
in different ways and to different degrees.
Let's start with Layton, because the way it involves participation is the most obvious.
I mean, it's a *video-game* adaptation, the medium that first comes to mind for most
people when thinking of interacting with a form of media.
You can clearly see the many ways that the T.V. show incorporates its source's video-game
elements.
Jesper Juul, video game theorist and game developer, briefly wrote about the process
of translating stories from one medium to another.
He says, "narratives can be split into a level of discourse (the telling of the story)
and the story (the story told).
The story-part can then be split into two parts, existents (actors and settings) and
events (actions and happenings).
A story can then be recognized by having the same existents (with the same names) and the
same events; this is what we usually mean by talking "of the same story."
However, while Juul focuses more so on the story side of things, Layton ends up also
incorporating its source's discourse into its anime adaptation.
While the game has a few unrelated puzzles strewn about for you to solve, it is mostly
a point and click game, where you must find clues in different locations.
The adaptation works in a similar way, only that the "clicking" is done for you.
Once all of the clues have been gathered, it breaks the fourth wall and asks you what
you can come up with given what you know, and almost challenges you to beat Katry at
her own game.
This kind of interplay between viewer and show is something that is rarely seen, and
adds an extra level of engagement to great effect.
In a sense you're almost forced to be invested, as long as you're actively participating
with its narrative.
At first glance it's a very kid-show kind of idea, reminiscent of things like Blues
Clues and Dora the Explorer, but you'll come to find that this level of engagement
allows the show to ramp up its emotional moments.
Rather than being child's play, most of the mysteries had me scratching my head in
confusion, only for some to move me to tears; and I attribute some of that to its deceptively
simple method of allowing the viewer to "play along."
However, this is only one way participation can be used, and a fairly unique one at that.
Other times its presence can be quite subtle.
When talking about anime structure, there's a large contingent of people who have gripes
with shows that are episodic.
Common complaints include lack of plot progression, resulting in reduced stakes and a feeling
of "why does this matter exactly?"
With Cardcaptor Sakura being largely structured in typical mahou shoujo "Monster of the
Week" format, you would think it would fall victim to staleness, but this wasn't the
case for me.
And I think the magic is in the cards.
You see, by having a goal to strive towards every episode, you get a steady feeling of
progress that may be lacking in other episodic shows.
In addition, the cards add a meta component for the viewer to play around with.
Can you guess what card it will be, how can Sakura best use the cards she currently has
at her disposal to capture it, and how well does this new card synergize with the ones
she has currently (assuming she doesn't just use Windy for the umpteenth time).
In a sense this provides sort-of a mini-mystery each episode and a way to connect with Sakura
as a character.
There were many times where Sakura came up with a ramshackled plan that didn't occur
to me, leading to those magical moments where you're actually proud of a fictional character.
While Layton and Cardcaptor's participation is largely contained within the show itself,
with some it becomes a phenomenon.
I'm actually relatively new to watching shows seasonally, but it seems as though there's
always that one *must-watch* of the season, not necessarily because it's any good, but
because it's what everyone is talking about.
These are the Darling in the Franxx's, the ERASED's, and the Re:Zero's of the world.
A lot of people would argue that getting caught up in the discussion and experience of Mayoiga
was the best part of the show.
What that says about the show I'll leave up to you.
That takes me to Boku no Hero.
It has this aspect of participatory media for sure, where its existence and popularity
demands commentary.
You may personally disagree with this, but just take a look at anywhere anime is discussed
and you'll find it there, whether that be thousands of comments on reddit or thousands
of videos on YouTube (sometimes seemingly on a single channel!).
And with shounen shows, discussion can sometimes go one level deeper.
Past all of the typical comments, you'll find the bread-and-butter of shounen fans
alike: theorycrafting.
It's similar to what I described earlier with Cardcaptor Sakura, just taken to new
heights.
Speculation drives these discussions forward, and there's a raw sort of excitement to
be felt as people talk enthusiastically about esoteric terms like "powerscaling" and
possible events to come.
While it's not my thing personally, it's certainly a large source of enjoyment for
some people.
Some say we are now living in a participatory culture, and its hard to disagree.
Much of the flack Netflix is getting from anime fans, is because their "binge-watch"
model pushes back against this idea; robbing people of the opportunity to engage and discuss
with others from week to week.
But as you can see with shows like Layton and Cardcaptor Sakura, there can be more to
it than simply commenting on online forums.
I encourage you to try to lose yourself a bit and lean into shows that encourage outside
participation, whether that means going frame by frame for symbolism or arguing who best
girl is.
You might find yourself having more fun along the way.
Thanks for watching, and be sure to like and subscribe for more content.

I'm getting nervous, for real!
Shoot, this is hard.
Talk to me "mens", Sheviii2K in the building!
I am Robin Hood!
It's time. I got a text on my phone
What's up, "mitos"!
And today the vlog is gonna be very
very very very very very very very very very very
All good?
I'm starting this vlog because I was chosen to GameLand!
I was napping, and I just got this text:
Let me read the text I just got
I am gonna show you all the text
"You guys were chosen to GameLand"
"The biggest gamer mansion in the world"
"A car will pick you up"
"And will take you to your final destination"
We are going somewhere that I don't know where
And then, let's see what happens
Holy crap! I'm really anxious, for real!
The biggest gamer mansion in the world!
To be honest, I don't really know what to expect from this experience.
I don't know how this house is going to be, how my room is gonna look like,
the new scenario for my videos, so I'm really excited!
So, we will be back soon, I'll be recording the whole time
Let's go, then!
Oh, right. I have to shower first.
Talk to me, "mens"! We're back! Look at this!
What's up guys! We're here at the hotel, and let's add another camera!
Right!
Now, the other camera!
Show yourself, show yourself!
Soon we'll go to Gameland
Let's go, let's go boys. This's the squad.
Bro, show the dog! We need to show the dog to get views!
Look at him!
That's it, "Tchugeras"!
Dude, there's a Mario here!
He came to pick us up, dude!
There is a guy from FORTNITE over there
Oh my God! A Kombi came to pick us up!
Lets's Go!
There's a Mario driving!
What the heck is happening ?!
This Mario, dude!
The Mario from Deep Web!
It's funny to see everyone on the streets looking at us like: "What the heck!"
Let's take a look!
It's glued down!
Holy $h#@!
Mother f#@€#%!
Look, it's Mario! It's Mario over there!
Hey guys, we're arriving here
Now we're nervous!
Hey, Bruno, how's your heart?
BPM is 89 already
Look, there's a rabbit over there!
I think we arrived!
There's a lhama there! It's the FORTNITE lhama!
Welcome to what?!
Welcome to "Jogolândia"
Give me a hug!
I've been waiting for you guys for over a week!
Welcome to "Jogolândia!"
I'm lost
So, here is the thing
we had this lot, we were going to build a really big house,
but the owners decided not to sell it to a rabbit.
So, we built it right there!
Oh, we made it to the "mansion"
Ok, ok
Look
There is even a chair
I'm sure there's a prank inside
You go first!
Look at the gaming laptop!
There is a skull in the motorcycle!
They're going away! Holy!
Where's your driver going?!
What's happening here?
Wow, wow! Wait, wait!
I'm going, guys! Bye
Get in the Kombi, and follow the map
I'm getting scared
Look at the size of this map!
Wow, look at that!
But now Mario is gone!
Where are we?
"You are here", look!
You go right, then you make a U turn
We just have to go down here
That's it, trust me!
We're gonna go through here, straight and then go down
Let's go!
Who's driving?
You go, Sheviii
Where's the map? where's the map?
Caio is going to be the co-pilot
Wait wait wait! There are instructions
It's prohibited to use any mobile apps. Only recording. If you break any rules, there'll be severe consequences. hahaha
How do I let the emergency break go?
Hold the clutch!
I'm holding it!
I'm putting it on reverse, but It's not going!
Press and go!
Oh, you got it
Let's go, let's go!
When I crash, let me know
Turn right?
No no! Left!
Right or left??
There's a guy from PUBG there!
Get out of the way!
He's holding a pan!
What the heck!?
Cellphones and cameras are not allowed
For real?
They are gonna blindfold us
Uh, I don't like that!
It shocked me! It shocked me!
I'm getting nervous
You can take the folds off
Now, It's all on you
Wow!
What is this?
Wait, wait! Oh my God!
Let's press it all together?
Let's just press this!
Let's go? Hands together?
2, 3, GO!
Now what?
I'm scared of pressing that
Let's press it together
On 3
Ready?
1, 2, 3, GO

and philanthropist.
He is the founder of the eBay auction site where he served as chairman from 1998 to 2015.
Omidyar was born in Paris, the son of Iranian immigrant parents who had been sent to France
by their parents to attend university.
He was given the name of Parviz by his Iranian parents.
His mother, Elahé Mir-Djalali Omidyar, is an academic and his father, a surgeon, worked
as a urologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Due to his father's work the family moved to the United States when Omidyar was a child.
His interest in computers began while he was a ninth-grade student.
He graduated from St. Andrew's Episcopal School in 1984 and from Tufts University

He created a simple prototype on his personal web page, and on Labor Day, he launched an
online service called Auction Web, which eventually became the auction site eBay.
In 1998, eBay launched a successful public offering, making Omidyar a billionaire.
As of July 2008, Omidyar's 178 million eBay shares were worth around $4.45 billion.

Strangest Rituals of Astronauts before Space Travel - Duration: 2:27.
Russian astronauts who embark on a flight into the cosmos have a ritual they have been
honest with for more than 50 years.
Before they board the space ship, they urinate the wheel of the bus, that transports them
by the ship.
Hey there, This is Bhaskar Banerjee and you are watching YouTube Channel Bhaskban.
It is a custom that was introduced by Yuri Gagarin in 1961.
Gagarin was the first person to fly into the cosmos, and before he became famous, he urinated
the rubber of the wheel of the car, that had transported him to the place of launch of
the Vostok spacecraft.
Since then, all Russian astronauts have been carrying out this ritual, which they consider
to be safe from the dangers generated by such a flight.
Astronaut women are not required to participate in such a ritual, although some have done
it, but many of them throw the contents of a vial into the wheel of the car.
Russian astronauts have some other rituals, before making a flight to the cosmos.
Among these are watching an old movie, a lunch on green grass, or taking a horseshoe of a
horse or a talisman.
After the dissolution of the USSR, the astronauts have another ritual.
A priest blesses them before boarding the ship.
American astronauts also have their rituals.
Before embarking, they eats eggs and a piece of steak.
This is a tradition that was established by Alan Shepard, the first American to fly into
the cosmos.

BB-8 Skirt and Petticoat - 1950s Inspired Fashion | DIY Inspiration | Whitney Sews - Duration: 17:40.
hi everyone I'm Whitney and I post videos here on my channel to help stores
of all skill levels learn new projects and techniques this week I'll be sharing
a DIY inspiration for the bb-8 poodle style skirt that I made as well as the
matching petticoat I showed both of these recently in my vintage style
clothing collection video but I wanted to do a separate video talking more in
depth about them and kind of the process that I went through making them in case
anyone is interested in learning more about that so I was inspired to make
this skirt when I saw the original one on Instagram I was scrolling through my
feed and a picture popped up that someone had shared or was an ad I'm not
really sure but it was a picture of a light grey skirt that had a bb-8 and
then the little orange rickrack coming out like a poodle skirt I will have a
link below to the picture that I saw on Instagram as well as any other pictures
I can find so you can see the original version of the skirt so I took a quick
screenshot of the picture and then just kept scrolling through my feed but I
knew that I wanted to make a version of that skirt for myself so I kept looking
back on it in my photos on my phone and thinking I have to make this skirt but I
wasn't in any rush to make it because I didn't really have an event to wear it
to I didn't want to go out and spend a lot of money on supplies right then and
so I just kind of had it on the back burner but I was kind of thinking it
over in my mind and figuring out the different aspects of it I did go ahead
and search through Etsy and a few other sites to find a bb-8 patch that I liked
it was a little difficult to find a larger patch I knew I wanted at least a
6-inch patch to make the scale look right I wish I could have found like an
8-inch one but I just couldn't but I ended up finding one on Etsy that was
six inches tall and I picked that up as well as three of their smaller patches
that are four inches in case I want to make something coordinating for Jeremiah
and the I will have a link below to the exact
patch that I bought as well as my Ebates link I shopped through Ebates to save a
little bit of money on my purchase it was just a few cents but hey every penny
counts so if you aren't using Ebates you should this is not sponsored I'm just
telling you how I like to save money when I purchased up online I go through
Ebates save a little bit of money it's really cool I prefer a link below where
you can get some extra money if you want to check it out
like I said not sponsored just sharing how I made my purchase
anyway and so I went ahead and bought the patch and have it in my sewing room
I also went ahead and bought the orange rickrack when it was half off at Hobby
Lobby so I was trying to get my supplies here and there so I could catch it on
sale or use discounts so that I wasn't splurging a whole lot to make this
project at one time I did find out later the original skirt cost about $100 and I
made mine for like $10 so I definitely was able to save a lot of money which is
awesome in my book oh and I did find out after the fact that the original skirt
was made by a company called her universe I was told this by a Disney
Store employee and who actually owns one of the skirts she saw me wearing my
skirt because we went to the Disney Store after an event and she said she
owned the original skirt it retailed for about $100 and she actually liked my
version better so that was really encouraging that someone who has seen
both versions said that they like to find better like that was that was
really cool so like I said I started out with zero timeline as to when I wanted
to make this skirt I was in no rush but I did attend a convention earlier this
summer whenever I go to a convention whether a dress up or not I almost
always come home wanting to make something wanting to either make a
cosplay or a new outfit or something so I came home
wanting to finally make this skirt and while I was at the convention I happen
to remember all of the trash bags full of curtains that some friends had given
me a few months prior they gave me ten of those giant black trash bags full of
curtains from a remodel project they're working on and I hadn't gone through all
of the bags yet I'm slowly working through them and washing the curtains
and taking apart and all that but I remembered seeing some gray texture
curtains so I was starting to put things together in thinking I could use those
curtains and make this skirt I already have the patch I already have the
ricrac I had everything I needed I could go home and make this skirt so
Peyton was at a sleepover at my parents house and so I put Skyler to bed and I
started in making my skirt so I got started at 10 p.m. which is pretty late
to start a project and I decided I was going to vlog the process but as you can
see this is not a progress blog and that's because the project was a
disaster I had chosen to use simplicity 8 4 4 6 which as you can tell is a
vintage reprint pattern from the 50s the original version of the pattern was a
full circle skirt but you may notice this is not a full circle skirt this is
a half circle skirt and I did not catch that when I originally bought the
pattern and when I was about to start in on it until I got everything out of the
envelope endless cutting the pieces out that's when I caught on to the fact that
this is not a circle skirt pattern so I ended up starting by having to draft my
own a circle skirt pattern which took some time but I knew I still wanted to
use parts of this pattern because I love the shape of the waistband here so my
original plan was to use the waistband and the pockets and then use my own
drafted skirt pattern so I got going I got everything cut out I started sewing
and it was just awful so in this design the pockets are way up
here at the top but the skirt sits at your natural waist so the pockets are
right up on your upper stomach area which is way too high like they're not
usable at all and then in fact on the left side where her hand is what she is
hiding is where the zipper is sewn in on the backside the zipper is sewn to the
back on the front side like the front half of the zipper it is sewn to the
pocket lining I had never done this before and I tried it several times and
it looked absolutely terrible it showed it was lumpy looking it just looked
awful it was the worst zipper I have ever sewn in in my lifetime I got the
skirt all the way to the point where I needed to hang it overnight and then I
was going to hem it in the morning this was at 2:00 a.m. and I hung this skirt
up and I went to bed but as I was laying in bed trying to go to sleep I knew I
was not happy with this skirt I could not wear it in public and proudly say
yes I made this skirt it is not up to my standards and I did not want to finish
it so in the morning I decided I was going to just chalk that whole skirt up
to being a mock-up and a practice version and I was going to start over so
the second version of the skirt is actually the skirt that you all have
seen it went so much better I used my self drafted skirt pattern I
also drafted pockets that would go lower in the skirt and then I used the
waistband from this skirt so with the pockets being down lower now they're
actually below the zipper I got them in perfectly nicely and I have a pop of
color in the pockets I used an orange polka dot print for inside the pocket
that when you're just wearing the skirt without your hands in the pockets you
can't even tell that the pockets are there you don't see the orange peeking
out and the zipper went in nicely I started in the same way I saw in all of
my skirt zippers which I have a separate video on that's linked down below in the
description box and I'm just so much happier with how the second version of
the skirt went it went so smoothly and I absolutely love it when the skirt
was completely done I went ahead and made the petticoat that I'll talk about
here and a little bit and I waited until the petticoat was done to add the patch
and the rickrack because I wanted to make sure everything
laid properly on the skirt with the petticoat underneath but what I did was
I put the petticoat on I put the skirt on and then I stood in front of a mirror
and kind of practiced where I wanted the patch to be pent it in place make sure I
liked the position of it and then I put the end of the ricrac
underneath where the patch would be and tacked it down then put the patch on top
and sewed around it this way the end of the ricrac is hidden underneath the
patch so this way it has a really nice finished look and the other end of the
ricrac is tucked in to the inside and tacked down right at the top of the
zipper I hadn't actually worked with ricrac much in the past but I really
liked it I was surprised how nicely it laid even around like curves and
everything I could get it to lay really smooth and that was a really nice
surprise I didn't think it would go on so nicely but I really liked it and I
think I will try to work with ricrac some more in the future
this skirt turned out exactly how I wanted it and I am so glad I originally
was going to use either a button or snaps for the waistband closure right
above the zipper but I am so glad that at the last minute I decided to go with
a hook and bar closure so it is hidden and yeah I think that was a really good
decision once the skirt was complete I of course needed a petticoat for it the
original her univers skirt was not shown with a petticoat
but I knew I wanted a petticoat and I wanted a big one and I wanted it to have
orange on the bottom and I just like exactly knew in my mind what kind of
petticoat I wanted and in my mind I'm picturing like The Wallflowers at a sock
hop I've seen a picture where it's like a bunch of girls lined up on
at a dance and they all have their petticoats and everything on and you
just see like mountains of tulle that's like you know right at their knee level
just ulle everywhere and so like that is what I wanted for this skirt so while I
was still in the planning stages for this project there was a local fabric
store that went out of business and I picked up a lot of tulle for really
really inexpensive there but since I hadn't worked out all the details for
the skirt I just had to guess on the measurements and thankfully I guessed
pretty closely like I actually ended up having some tulle left over which was
good especially since I paid so little for it and then I found this a great
tutorial on YouTube that I actually used to make my petticoat I didn't make it
exactly like hers I did change how I did the top level but a lot of the math and
everything was still really close to what she used and I will leave a link to
the petticoat tutorial that I referred to down below in the description box
because I did not film a tutorial this is the very first time I've ever made a
petticoat so I did not want to be focused on trying to film it and mess
something up as well as the fact that it is really hard to film white tulle like
when you're working with white tulle it is hard enough to see it let alone film
it so for my petticoat the top layer is the same orange and white polka-dot
cotton that I used for the lining of the skirt pockets and the measurements on
that are five and a half by 48 inches the rest of the petticoat is actually
essentially two different petticoats that are sewn three rows each and then
once each individual one is completed they are sewn together to that orange
cotton layer so the first row of the tulle layer is eight inches by four
yards the next layer is eight inches by twelve yards and the third one is seven
and a half inches by 36 yards long and of course it's not nearly as much
material as it sounds like because so for like the 4-yard row I was using
white tulle that was 60 inches from edge to edge so I just had to cut a couple of
strips that were the eight inches by the 60 inches and that was my four yards and
I just sewed those into a loop and I had my eight inches by four yards row so not
nearly as much fabric as it sounds it is just really really time-consuming to cut
all those strips and then piece them all together now of course each of those are
gathered down to fit the row above it so I started with the 36-yard row and I
gathered it down to fit the 12-yard row above it and then the 12-yard one was
gathered down to fit the 4-yard one now laying out a loop that is 36 yards
around and trying to equally pin it to the row above that is an interesting
task it took my entire living room and I would like match up one area and then
try to find the halfway point all the way across it so 18 yards away and then
pinned that to the halfway point on the row above and I would add about like 18
pins and then pretty much give up and just take it to the sewing machine and
gather by hand as I went and it worked out fine it's not like 100% evenly
gathered but no one's gonna know there's so much volume you cannot tell so once
all of that was done I picked up a slip at the thrift store is just a premade
slip because at this point I was ready to be done and I added it to the inside
for the lining unfortunately I did trim about five inches off the slip and it
was a couple inches too much so the last seam of the tulle does kind of rub my
legs some so I may have to add a little extender to that I'm not sure
but you know it happens sometimes so then for the top I just slightly
gathered it so it would fit my natural waist size and then I added bias binding
around the top I left a little bit extra on it in case I ever need to wear it
down at my hips I have the little bit of extender there and I just added a snap
and my petticoat was done it really wasn't as hard as I thought it would be
to make it was just a lot more time than I thought it would be
I made the petticoat over one weekend is when I made it so I worked on that
several hours over a couple of different days but I'm really happy with how it
turned out and occasionally I wish I would have made it like all white or
something like that would be more versatile but I do really love how the
orange looks on the bottom it's nice little surprise when someone sees the
petticoat how it you can tell it was made to go with the skirt and I really
really like that I have worn this skirt a couple of times already I wore it to a
pinup Bazaar as well as a local comic convention and I got several compliments
both times which was so sweet and then like I said earlier on the way back from
the convention we stopped at the Disney Store and all of the employees who saw
me wearing it just complimented and bragged about how nice it looked and
they like I said they had all seen the original version of the skirt in person
and so that was just so nice that they everyone was so sweet about it and
everyone liked my skirt and I still do have those other three patches that I
mentioned earlier the one for Jeremiah for Skyler and for Peyton I'm trying to
decide what to use them for so that we can kind of have like coordinating
family outfits because we're you know dorky like that but I don't think I want
to make skirts for the girls because I would like this to be something we can
wear for awhile and I feel like if I made circle skirts for Peyton and Skyler
they would outgrow fairly quickly so I'm not really sure what I want to do
with them yet so if you have any ideas on that on ways I could use these
patches for a whole family thing let me know in the comments below because I
definitely need some suggestions on that and make sure you subscribe to my
channel because I have lots of other awesome videos coming up soon and until
next time happy sewing

Critically Acclaimed Films No One Saw In Theaters - Duration: 5:44.
If a film earns widespread critical acclaim but audiences don't turn out to watch it in
theaters, is it still worth your time?
That's a question that's been posed plenty of times in response to the lackluster performances
of tentpole films like Blade Runner 2049 and Solo.
In order to try to answer that question, let's take a look into the past.
Some of America's very best movies were actually box office bombs, and there's an important
lesson here: a box office flop isn't always unwatchable trash.
Sometimes, it's an incredible gem audiences just missed seeing in the theaters, for one
reason or another.
Money might be Hollywood's great equalizer, but some movies are greater than the sum of
their box office totals.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
In 2010, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World hit screens with both the ultraviolence of a Quentin Tarantino
movie and the sensibilities of a classic video game.
With Arrested Development's Michael Cera playing the film's quirky hero, it felt as if the
movie was destined for box office greatness.
Instead…
"If I peed my pants would you pretend I just got wet from the rain?"
"It's not raining."
"Oh."
Universal Pictures poured a reported $60 million into the film and stars like Mary Elizabeth
Winstead, Anna Kendrick, and future Captain America Chris Evans rounded out the cast,
but none of that helped the studio earn back its money.
Bringing in a mere $31 million domestically, the movie did manage to win over the critics,
with Peter Travers of Rolling Stone raving,
"Scott Pilgrim is a breathless rush of a movie that jumps off the screen, spins your head
around and then stealthily works its way into your heart."
So why didn't more people rush to theaters to see it?
You can probably chalk it up to a combination of poor marketing, the still growing comic-book
movie formula, and the not-quite universal star-power of Michael Cera.
Man on the Moon
In the late '90s, Jim Carrey was, without a doubt, at the top of Hollywood's food chain.
With the success of films like Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, and The Mask under his belt, it
seemed as if he could do no wrong.
And when it was announced he would be bringing the life story of legendary comic Andy Kaufman
to the big screen, it felt like a no-brainer that the rubber-faced, often-misunderstood
comedian would do a great job paying tribute to one of his heroes.
Unfortunately, Man on the Moon wasn't the hit the studio had been hoping for.
As long as Carrey was delivering belly laughs, audiences came flocking.
But, much like with his turn in the Ben Stiller-directed dark comedy The Cable Guy, fans weren't sure
how to react to a more dramatic turn from the actor.
The movie only earned a little more than half of its budget, taking in a measly $34 million.
While Universal took the hit for that loss, the film was celebrated by critics.
And, as seen in Netflix's documentary Jim & Andy, Carrey went completely method in bringing
Kaufman to life, and it worked for him.
Box office woes aside, it won Carrey a Golden Globe and helped pave the way for more serious
roles.
The Hurt Locker
Before they started protecting the world as Hawkeye and Falcon in the Avengers movies,
Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie partnered up in Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker.
Released in 2009, this gritty look at America's military in Iraq not only made Bigelow the
first woman to win a Best Director Oscar, but it also put a more modern spin on the
war movie formula.
But as numerous timely war films have discovered, it's always a challenge to bring in mass viewership
when the subject matter is a very real, and very recent, armed conflict.
When it came to theatrical revenues, The Hurt Locker ended up being a clear loser in the
box office battle, barely making back its $15 million budget domestically in the year
that found Avatar, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Up, and Paramount's Star Trek
reboot all vying for audiences' attention.
There's something to be said for the sheer mindless joy of escapism that those movies
offer, and, unfortunately for Bigelow's acclaimed effort, viewers were more inclined to revisit
Hogwarts than the Middle East.
Hugo
Martin Scorsese took a break from his usual sort of movie in 2011 with this kid-friendly
fantasy.
The story followed Asa Butterfield's Hugo as he unravels a mystery through steam-powered
riddles and historical clips of early 20th-century cinema, and it was breathtaking.
During its theatrical run, however, the movie didn't even come close to breaking the bank,
taking in $181 million worldwide, and barely earning back a staggering $180 million budget.
Hugo still earned a total of 11 Oscar nominations that year, adding to the director's long history
of critically acclaimed films.
So why didn't Hugo bring in the box office bucks?
One word: competition.
The movie arrived just one week after The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part One, and
Disney's new Muppets movie.
Basically, the combination of sparkly vampires and Kermit the Frog was too much for Hugo
to handle.
Snowpiercer
A dystopian tale about the aftermath of an environmental disaster that decimated Earth,
Snowpiercer revolves around survivors that are left struggling through a bleak existence
on a non-stop train.
For writer-director Bong Joon-ho's film, profits were less important than telling his story,
and it was a creative focus underscored by the widely publicized struggle between the
filmmaker and studio execs at The Weinstein Company who demanded edits for Snowpiercer's
American release.
The director prevailed, but at a cost: the movie ended up being given an abbreviated
limited release, and the studio declined to put much promotional weight behind its arrival.
The theatrical returns, unsurprisingly, were fairly dismal.
Ultimately, despite rave reviews, Snowpiercer earned just $4.5 million at the box office
in the United States.
Grosses overseas were far healthier, however, and the story still isn't over: if all goes
according to plan, a Snowpiercer series starring Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs will premiere
in 2019.

Chalk Paint Tutorial for Bedroom Furniture Part 2 - Duration: 2:51.
what is up everybody welcome back to the second part of a three part series on
doing it with Jason I'm Jason and today I'm going to be showing you how to chalk
paint furniture yeah we're gonna be using dixiebell paint products and they
Rock link is in the description below it's one of my favorite chalk paints I've
ever used and it's so easy today we're using mermaid tail that's a heck of a
name heck of a paint let's get started all right so what you're gonna want to
do is shake that painti up really well open the paint man that's pretty and
I'll be using the dixiebell brush they also available on their website which is
in the description and then you're just gonna start painting now generally when
I'm painting a piece I always remove the handles as you can see I did that
already and another really great idea I like to do is painting with the grain of
the wood so typically you know the grains left
and right for the drawer fronts like this and then the legs you know that'd
be up and down so I'll go in and up and down motion and that way if there's any
brush strokes and whatnot depending all the paint brush you're using and if it
leaves the brush strokes you know will be a little less noticeable it
kind of just be very uniform now we've got the first coat on this thing and
while it's drying perfect time to show you a tip
now you took your handles off and now you have to be able to put them back on
silly me I closed the drawer how do I get it open
well here's a quick tip when you can't reach anything or getting underneath it
to pull the drawer open you just use a machine screw or any kind of screwy I've
lying around get it right into the hole kind of pull down a little bit and there
you go voila open ready to go and that's your tip of the day. Hey there after painting one
little area I kind of break it up what I like to do is go back and make sure
there's no drips if I see a drip oh dear a drip I'll just come and lightly brush
it out no big deal just be sure to get it before it dries now I don't sand in
between any of the first and second coats because that'll be for the next
video which will be our third video in this three-part series the final video
for this thing is going to be a doozy it's gonna be how to glaze this thing
and make it look phenomenal so be sure to stick around like subscribe you know
check out the other videos I have new video will be out soon and I look
forward to seeing you guys hey come check out my new one

I didn't want to take a picture, like,
like, "I'm really in a rush, I gotta go."
I get on Twitter, it's like,
"Oh, yeah, I'm a Giants season ticket holder for 30 years."
Like, first of all, you're 20-somethin'...
-(LAUGHTER) -And then, and then--
And it's like, "Oh, he's an asshole.
He didn't want to take a picture." It's like...
To me, I be feelin' like-- I tell people this all the time,
I really feel like a zoo animal.
Like that's where life's gone for me.
You know, you used to take your kids to the zoo,
and we used to be like, you know,
"I want to see the lions," or, "Let's go see the lions!"
And you go out there and the lions are laid out.
You know what I mean? It's like,
"Why aren't they doing lion stuff?" Know what I mean?
Like, I got people who go, "Odell! Dance!"
Like-- Like I'm a show punk-- a show monkey or somethin'.
Like I'm a puppet, you know what I mean?
And it's like, to me, that doesn't feel good,
but it's like, "Damn, that's what life became," but...
can you ever really detach from that?

Can We Make It to O'Hare Airport Hands-Free in the Cadillac CT6? — Cars.com - Duration: 8:49.
Google Maps is currently telling me it's going to take 25 minutes to get to
O'Hare Airport from our downtown Chicago studio now it could easily be double
that in peak commuting traffic and that is just an awful drive okay like they
have an answer for that though with this hands-free super cruise it's an adaptive
cruise control system that on highways and interstates lets you go hands-free
now we're gonna put that to the test on ninety eight ninety four from Chicago to
O'Hare Airport and see if we can go the distance hands-free so as we get onto
the expressway activating super cruise is not as easy as it could be there's a
little gray light that pops up in the dashboard or in the instrument cluster
and the car has to be on the center line of the road for that to appear it's not
always easy to see the little gray icon because the steering wheel might even
block it depending on your driving position it would have been very nice to
have that in the head-up display of the ct6 but it's not the case it takes a
little work to identify when super cruise is ready and so now we're on the
expressway and we are going to wait for it to pop up and let's get this show on
the road all right super cruise is active and we're good we are hands-free
the steering wheel has illuminated and it's green little light so it is telling
me that super cruise is active and I am gonna turn the adaptive cruise
control up to 65 miles an hour and we're golden
so at mile marker 1.1 we've started super cruise so let's see how far we can
get what super cruise does exceptionally well is it holds its position in the
lane better than other systems at least in my experience on these roads it holds
that center position in the road better than Tesla's autopilot and Volvo's pilot
assist the big downside is it only works on certain roads on those pre-programmed
pre scanned roads it's not going to work on a two-lane highway without a center
divider or one of the other many many thousands of miles of roads that aren't
programmed into the super cruiser system that's unlike Tesla's autopilot or
Volvo's pilot assist that will work on almost any road as long as there are
lane markings and the cameras can read where the car is but this is certainly
an impressive system when it does work one of the ways that super cruise allows
people to go hands-free and for them to actually recommend it is it uses a
driver facing infrared camera and it's looking at head position who super
Cruise has been disengaged so the red light on the steering wheel
started barking at me saying supercruise is going to and disengage so I am going
to reactivate super curse and again I try to reactivate it and it tells me
it's going to disengage now I've lost the super cruise icon all together I am
gonna try and change lanes so I can use the turn signal to change lanes it kind
of thinks about it while you're changing lanes and then when you're back in the
lane it reactivates super curse it doesn't work like Tesla's autopilot
where you flip the turn signal and it will change lanes automatically we are
coming up to a split in the highway where 94 goes north and 90 goes west I'm
curious to see how it's gonna handle if it's gonna keep me in the lane to go to
90 west out toward the airport or if it's gonna disengage
as you can see supercruise does a pretty good job of moving with the road
curvature so it is steering on this slightly curvy highway there is a point
though where there can be too much steering angle in it will turn itself
off so the warning systems first if it senses you're not paying attention the
little green light will start flashing at you you know hey pay attention if it
goes a little further it will say it'll start flashing red and it's like okay
what's going on here we're gonna turn this off and you think
about what you did wrong and then the last alert is all right party's over
that's it it will turn it off it'll have an audible voice saying please pay
attention and then it will automatically slow the car down to a stop and if you
still haven't responded it will call on stars emergency services okay so we're
approaching the interchange here we're 90 west and 94 West split and it turned
itself off and a trucks trying to kill me
cool
so yeah it disengaged and now there's no supercruise icon so we're gonna split
off on 290 West here and hopefully let's see
all right super pers is back
and it's off and we're back on supercruise is engaged hands are off the
steering wheel we are paying attention still it feels very natural like a human
is driving there's not a lot of jerky moments and it doesn't ping-pong between
the lanes either like some other systems it does a really good job even when
we're next to a truck where it wants to suck you in or in heavy winds it's
correcting very well in keeping the car on the center of the road so we're
cruising about 65 miles an hour now we're coming to traffic slowed down so
we will see if it keeps it active during this slow period too and yeah if we're
chugging along at 16 miles an hour supercruise still active no hand on
steering wheel requirement this is pretty nice if you had to do this
commute often this would be a great system this also really makes on camera
dialogue easier because I talk with my hands we made it to O'Hare not totally
hands-free but some of that was by design where the highway split but when
it is working it works really well it's one of the better next-level adaptive
cruise controls out there with just how well it centers the car in its lane and
how smooth and comfortable it makes you feel when the feature is active two of
its biggest snacks though are that it only works on certain highways and if
you don't live around them then what's the point and - right now it's only
available on the CT 6a sedan that we're not especially enamored with but if
you're looking at the CT six and you'll live where there are roads where
supercruise works then it's a no brainer you got to get it

How To Create A Intro In Kinemaster - Duration: 4:35.
In this video I'm going to show you how you can make a simple intro in Kinemaster.
So be sure to watch until the end. What's going on my name is Devin Street helping
you build your online presence and today I'm gonna be showing you how you can
make a simple intro like mine you just saw in Kinemaster. But if you're not
already subscribed go ahead and click the subscribe button there's a new video
every single Wednesday showing you how you can edit in Kinemaster okay the
first thing we're actually gonna do is add in a colored background that we want
so we'll need to go to media browser to do that and then once we're in Media
Browser we'll go up here and click background
once we're in background we can choose any of these and I'm going to just
choose the black one once we are done with that we need to go ahead and get a
logo in here so I did go ahead and drop in this I play button YouTube logo and
let's go ahead and trim this off a little bit and now we have it to where
it's a shorter length than what is already up there and let's actually make
this kind of short let's make it around about 1.5 seconds and then we're going
to do in in animation which we need to decide what we want to do like with mine
is the not the slide up but the is it the pop I don't think it's the pot I
think it's the scale up yeah this one right here it's the scale up as the in
animation and then as the out animation it is the scale down so now that we have
this trim let's just cut off this end of the background right here so it's kind
of shorter so let's go ahead and watch that the logo comes up and disappears
and that's the end of the intro but we need to add more to this
so let's actually cut this slightly more so there's less
time and let's cut it right there let's Center this up and after we have that
centered up we can play it it's gonna be a lot shorter but now we need to export
this and show you what else you can do so I am on the export screen I'm gonna
go ahead and save this in full HD and we have the project now we need to go back
to the video that we were in and now that we're back here let's go ahead and
get rid of this and let's go ahead and add these two images right here okay so
we have these images right here and what we're actually going to do is go ahead
and add that export in that we've already exported right here and now what
we actually can do is these little things right here these squares with
lines to them are our transition boxes we need to click those and choose a
transition and what I actually do with mine is a light leak so let's go ahead
and add some light leaks in there so we just added in this light leak so if we
watch this until the end it light leaks and then the logo comes up and comes
back out and then we can lightly go again but I accidentally made the video
clip a little shorter so try to make the video clips slightly longer I think I
made mine a little too short but once so we would have our video playing and then
this light leak comes in and then the logo is gonna pop up when the light
leaks coming in and then it's going to go back out and it's gonna lot like
let's and put it on this one there we go
so the it would come in and that's going out it would light leak into the next
part of the video so that is simply how you can create a very simple intro in
kinam aster but if you want to grow your online presence make sure to click the
subscribe button I want to thank you for watching until the end of this video and
I'll see you in the next video

How to Make The Best Ever Peach Crisp | The Stay At Home Chef - Duration: 3:14.
Today on The Stay At Home Chef I'm showing you how to make
The Best Ever Peach Crisp
I love a good peach crisp!
Especially when it has a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top
It's so good!
To start you'll need to peel, pit, and slice a bunch of peaches
Now you can always blanch your peaches to get the
peel off easier, but I find that this is just as fast
Just doing it the old fashioned way
Now for peach crisp I like to make sure that my peach
slices are nice and thin because they bake better that way
Once you have all of your peaches peeled, pitted, and sliced
transfer them all to a large mixing bowl
Then to that add 1/4 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/4 cup of white sugar
2 tablespoons of cornstarch which will act as a thickening agent
Then you'll need 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
and 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
Stir this all together until everything is well mixed in
Then transfer it all to a lightly greased 9x9 pan
Just remember your peaches will shrink a little bit while baking
so make sure you fill that pan nice and full
If you want to double this recipe you can easily do that
and make your peach crisp in a 9x13 pan
Next we're going to make our topping
You'll need 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
1/2 cup of brown sugar
and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
you'll also need 1/2 cup of cubed, salted butter
and you're going to use a pastry cutter to cut this all in
Just rock your pastry cutter back and forth
until all of the butter is cut in with the flour and sugar mixture
You can also do this in a food processor
Last you'll stir in 1 cup of rolled oats
You want to make sure you use the old fashioned kind
and not the instant because the old fashioned has
a lot more texture.
Just stir that in
and sprinkle it on top of your peaches
Now we love the crisp in our peach crisp
so we like to add a lot of topping to ours
but you can add as much or as little as you like
based on your own personal taste preferences
We basically just like to have a little peaches with our crisp
because it is totally the best part!
Next we're going to bake this in a 350 degree oven
for about 30 minutes
The crumble should be toasted and lightly browned
and then you are ready to eat!
I like to serve mine up while it's still warm
with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
Thanks for watching!

Why Princess Charlotte Won't Automatically Inherit the Title of Princess Royal - Duration: 2:41.
Why Princess Charlotte Won't Automatically Inherit the Title of Princess Royal.
When Prince William is crowned King, there will be many changes in store for the rest
of his immediate family.
- Kate Middleton will be named Queen, Prince George will move up in the line of succession
to the throne,
and Princess Charlotte will become the Princess Royal...eventually.
Charlotte won't immediately take on the title of the Princess Royal because someone else
in the family already holds it.
The title of Princess Royal is traditionally bestowed on the eldest daughter of the monarch,"
royal expert and author of Prince Harry: The Inside Story Duncan Larcombe tells
TownandCountrymag.com, pointing out that Princess Anne, Queen Elizabeth II's eldest daughter,
is the current Princess Royal.
"It is a title that remains for life, so Princess Charlotte will have to wait at least until
the death of the current Princess Royal," Larcombe adds.
But even after Princess Anne's death, there is no guarantee that the title change will
happen automatically.
Larcombe says it will then be up to Charlotte's father, William, to decide if and when Charlotte
gets the title.
Waiting for the title change is nothing new; Charlotte's great aunt also had to be patient
for over twenty years.
"Princess Anne had to wait until 1987 before her mother the Queen bestowed the title of
Princess Royal on her, even though the title had been vacant since 1965," Larcombe says.
It previously belonged to Princess Mary, eldest and only daughter of King George V and Queen
Mary, who was Princess Royal from 1932 to 1965.
Currently, Princess Charlotte is only three and doesn't understand all of the responsibilities
that come along with having such a title, but she may not be in such a hurry to receive
it once she learns what being a Princess Royal actually entails.
According to Larcombe, there are very strict rules for dating the Princess Royal.
"Under ancient British law, any man who sleeps with the Princess Royal before they are married
is guilty of high treasonpunishable by execution!"
Larcombe says.
"Perhaps Princess Charlottes future boyfriends had better look out.
At the very least, Wills and Kate are likely to wait until after Charlotte marries before
giving her the title."-
