Hi everyone, I am Prasun Shakya.
Welcome to my fourth part of my weekly tutorial on Search Engine Optimization.
Last week I discussed how social media have a positive impact on your search engine presence
and how can you sell through search.
In this tutorial, I will be helping you develop an optimization plan and improve your site's
search presense in video, image, blogs and also in mobile devices as well as measuring
SEO performance.
I like to start this as Leave No Stones Unturned which implies that you need to develop an
optimizatio plan that expands and enhances your brand's footprint beyond text links in
search results to video, image, blogs as well as mobile devices.
Lets first start with how you can optimize your image for image search results.
If you sell <red socks> your picture of red socks will have a better chance for ranking
if you dedicate it on a red socks page rather than mixing it up in the winter fashion page.
Besides that some of the other essential things to keep in mind are:
- The file name for the image of red socks should be red-socks.jpg
- A clear and keyword rich caption should be placed right below the image of the red
socks.
- Use identical ALT AND TITLE tag on the same image.
In this case, use the alt and title tag as red socks.
- The text link should also include the keyword with descriptive and clickable text
If your website focuses on vlogging or sharing videos, you should put in some energy for
video search optimization.
Some of my tips on how to optimize for video search are
- Make sure your videos on your site are presented on individual URLs.
Include text near the video and links pointing to the video page by including keywords
- Your video name should contain keywords in the similar format.
- The closed caption or transcription in your videos are indexed by the search engine to
take advantage of this include keyword rich content into the caption or transcription
- Include content-specific details such as title, description, transcript or other essential
technical information with your video.
- Creating a Google video sitemap is a simple and powerful way to improve your video as
it has a greater chance for ranking.
Blogs You might be great at writing, there is no
doubt about that.
But if you build your blog contents with no thought about text optimization or SEO friendly
structure, your writings will not be as useful as it should as your blog may not appear in
the search and many people will not be able to read it.
Therefore I have a few tips to help you get the best out of your creative blogs,
If you are starting fresh with your blogs, include the keyword in your blog name.
On your homepage, include a tagline or other permanent text describing the blog.
While creating HTML title, make sure the title is a complete sentence that can explain what
the blog is about Use search-friendly permalink for all your
blog post.
You can use this formula for your permalink post-title-separated-by-hyphens.
Lastly, tag your post with keyword rich tags.
Don't shy out from telling about your blog to the world, reach out to people, share it
in your social media pages, because your blogs need inbound links as well.
Mobile is an essential part of our life.
We are continuously connected to our phone in our house or at work or even while we are
about to sleep.
It is crucial to keep in consideration the mobile experience of your website.
One Mantra for Mobile search i.e.trouble free and packed with all the information users
need.
Creating a mobile friendly content can help you retain your customers and achieve your
business goals. You can use three types of configuration to consider for your mobile
content.
First is, Responsive web design, regardless of the device
Second is to detect and serve content based on the user agent
And the third one is to create another site specifically only for mobile in a different
URL.
The users get an option to click saying "use desktop version" so that they can switch
to the regular site.
So we have gone through every topic essential for SEO optimization, but no tutorial is complete
without checking your performance or seeing results.
We are in the most challenging phase in this tutorial right now, which is measuring the
performance of your SEO.
So to move ahead, you need to first install analytics software like Google Analytics,
Adobe Analytics, Web trends, IBM Digital Analytics.
After you gather information from this software, you need to define your objective and compare
it with the Key Performance Indicator or KPIs.
For example, you might want people to subscribe to your newsletter, for this you will set
up your analytics to track that as the conversion factor.
Then you can analyze the result through the KPIs.
You can also establish SEO specific KPIs to measure the result through SEO such as organic
search traffic, website visitors and targeted keyword rankings.
When you analyze the traffic that comes from your SEO, you need to examine whether that
traffic is bringing in conversions or not.
You should focus on how that traffic is converting your business goal and providing value for
you.
Measuring SEO is a continuous cycle of learning, recording and taking action.
You need to keep a record of every change you made in your strategy and in the next
cycle measure its performance, and the cycle goes on.
When you have quality contents on your website, and working on promotion and reaching out
to people, other websites will link to your site.
So, you need to keep an eye on what's happening to your link outside of your site.
There are many tool you can use, like Majestic SEO, Ahref, Raven SEO and Moz which can help
you with analyzing any links, not just yours.
So you can also look into your competitors link to discover new link opportunities.
But for analyzing your own backlinks, you need to look into different metrics.
Firstly the Page and Domain authority.
It gives you an idea of how official your domain and the specific page is.
The higher your site's domain authority, the stronger it is able to influence ranking.
There will also be information regarding a total number of links coming to your page
as well as a unique number of domains that these links are coming from.
With each of the individual site that is linking to your website, you can identify if there
is anything wrong with that linking.
For example, if your friend linked your website in a wrong keyword, you can always call him
up and make the adjustment.
You might even come across a site you don't want to link with, so you need to make them
take it down.
I understand SEO can be a lot of work for you.
If you are a startup, it must be difficult to go through everything I mentioned in this
tutorial.
Now that we are in the end, I would like to suggest you my last tips regarding SEO.
You are in a competitive market.
You will have to work harder if your competitors are in the game of SEO too.
If they are not, I assure you they will.
So step up your efforts accordingly to avoid preventable consequences.
If you anticipate that it's difficult to devote time for SEO campaign for your business, get
someone to do it for you.
As with the time and effort you dedicated in this tutorial, I am sure you know the what,
why and how of SEO.
Therefore it will be easier for you and your hired expert to give you the result that you
desire.
But if you can do it yourself, you saved yourself a bag of budget that you can utilise in the
things you desire or getting tools for SEO.
Be patient, keep updating, keep learning.
With this I conclude my tutorial on Search Engine Optimization.
