the easiest way to learn English
is to go to the country where the language is spoken.
It's such an enduring myth
unfortunately kept alive even by big-name dictionaries.
Longman and Cambridge
give the following example sentences for the phrasal verb: PICK UP = LEARN
No, you don't. that's not true!
You don't pick up the language "soon",
it's not that fast and
it's certainly not "easy".
Language is not a virus,
you don't just pick it up by visiting the country
and walking among the people who have it.
The same way you don't learn how to swim by taking a shower.
The main argument is that
we have more chances to speak the language.
However,
answer me this question:
How often do you speak your native language in your own country
outside your workplace and your family?
You walk out your front door in the morning
take your time and count:
How many words do you say between your house and your office?
Count please
how many words between your house and your office?
99% of all communication is done at work and at home.
99% of all communication is with
our coworkers or classmates
with our family and with our friends.
Living abroad gives you about 1% more opportunity to practice the language
Yes, but I will go to a language school in England.
You can go to a language school in your home country
much cheaper and less stressful
Yes, but I will do a homestay with a British family.
You can hire a private tutor or have online lessons
much cheaper and much more convenient.
Yes, but I can go talk with native speakers at bars and cafes
There are no bars and cafes where you live?
Do you live in North Korea?
If you are that outgoing and confident
then I'm sure you can do the same in your own country
don't get me wrong:
I believe that traveling abroad,
seeing places and meeting people from different cultures
is one of the most meaningful things a person can do.
However,
I don't believe in going to a country for the sole purpose of learning the language
the 1% benefit hardly justifies the cost and stress.
Learning abroad is not cost-effective.
The amount of money people spend/waste on language schools overseas is enormous.
in all fairness,
the belief that studying a foreign language in the country where it is spoken
was kind of true until recently,
before the invention of this thing called
the Internet.
In the pre-Internet era,
there was very limited access to foreign books, radio, and especially foreign TV.
one benefited from living in the country.
But today, it makes virtually no difference where you live
and especially with regard to English
Everything you want and need is in your pocket
The amount of money people waste on studying English abroad is mind-boggling.
It is truly shocking how much time and money people waste
because they don't know how to learn English

broke by taking a job to kidnap the children of a powerful Celestial known as Ego, who
was impregnating females across the universe, in the hopes of producing offspring that might
inherit his abilities.
In 1978, Hydra orchestrated the Iranian Revolution.
Later this year, as he continued with his project to produce a Celestial child, Ego
travelled to Earth and fell in love with Meredith Quill.
By 1980 she was pregnant with his son, and so with his mission complete, Ego prepared

losing his eyesight but gaining the ability to teleport.
In 1985 Calvin Johnson opened a medical clinic in China where he met and married an inhuman
named Jiaying.
In 1986, the ancient organization known as the Hand destroyed Chernobyl when they attempted
to extract dragon bones from the ground beneath, then staging a nuclear disaster to cover up
their involvement.
Having discovered an extra-dimensional sub-atomic particle able to expand and shrink both in
height and weight, Hank Pym used it to create the Ant Man suit, and unwilling to trust anyone
else with the technology, wore the suit himself on missions for SHIELD, creating an EMP communication
device to control an ant army that could help him while in a shrunken state.
And so in 1987 the Ant Man was sent on a mission to stop a group of radicals in Berlin who
had reverse engineered HYDRA technology.
Discovering weapon blueprints and HYDRA operatives performing human experiments, Pym used his
powers to defeat the enemy and rescue the prisoners.
After the success of his first assignment, Hank was sent on many more, now accompanied
by his wife Janet van Dyne in her own shrinking suit referred to as the Wasp.
However during a mission to stop a Soviet missile from reaching America, the Wasp sacrificed
herself by using the suits regulator to shrink to sub-atomic size, becoming small enough
to enter and disarm the missle but then continuing to diminish until reaching the quantum realm,
unable to bring herself back.
This loss devastated Hank Pym, causing him to retire the ant man suit.
Later this same year, young Cornell Stokes, later known as cottonmouth, killed his uncle
Pistol Pete, under orders from Mama Mabel, leader of the Stokes Crime Family out of Harlem.
Born with a serious brain disorder, Kevin Thompson spent his childhood as a test subject
for his parents, who performed dangerous and painful experiments on the boy in an attempt
to improve his mental abilities.
As a result, Kevin developed mind control powers, which he used against the parents
he hated, forcing his mother to burn her own face with a hot iron.
Realizing they had created a monster, the boy was abandoned in 1988, causing him to
grow up to become the selfish and ruthless criminal known as Kilgrave.
In this same year, the Ravager's crew under Yondu Udonta traveled to Earth where Meredith
Quill had finally died of the tumor planted by Ego, allowing them to abduct her son Peter

Arsenal are bracing themselves to lose Aaron Ramsey on a free transfer at the end of the
season after withdrawing their contract offer, according to reports.
The club have been locked in talks with the Welshman over a new deal for over a year,
with Ramsey free to begin negotiating a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in January ahead
of a summer departure.
Manager Unai Emery had been hopeful that Ramsey would be persuaded to stay, but now The Mirror
report that a new contract is no longer on the table.
There is now an expectation around the Emirates that Ramsey will leave on a free transfer
in the summer, depriving Arsenal of the £50milion transfer fee they could have demanded.
Both parties had been negotiating for months and Arsenal were confident of reaching an
agreement, but talks broke down after a sudden change.
Chelsea were interested in trying to sign Ramsey in the summer transfer window just
gone, and the Blues will have to battle Juventus and Manchester United to land him Emery was
asked about the contract situations of both Ramsey and Danny Welbeck, whose deal also
expires in 2019, after Wednesday's Carabao Cup win over Brentford.
'There are three things: the club, the player and the team,' Emery explained.
'I know they are in the last year and are speaking with the club.
'For me the focus is on each match.
The commitments of the players Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck is very high.'

"Pride" is the title of episode 3 for season 5 of Empire and this episode synopsis states, "Cookie and Lucious push to get back in the music game; Andre finds a risky way to make a name for himself among his fellow inmates.
In May 2018, it was revealed that the show had been renewed for season 5, as reported by Deadline.
And, a new edition to the show this season is singer Mario joining the cast, in the role of Devon.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has described the character as "an earnest, up-and-coming R&B singer who supports his ailing sister.".
Another change going on is a ground-breaking storyline, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Jussie Smollett recently told Entertainment Weekly, "Pay attention to Jamal's storyline this year, man, it's going to be groundbreaking.
You ain't gonna see anything like it.
I will say this, it's never been done on television.
You've never seen two black men in this way." He said that the show will execute something that has "never been done on television.".
Smollett also said, "This season is probably the best yet, because it grounds us in a way that we haven't been able to be since season 1.

The woman who says she witnessed Brett Kavanaugh drugging girls in order to rape them with groups of boys at high school parties has a history of financial troubles, according to federal and state tax records
And her estranged father said he was shocked by the allegations she has leveled against Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee
Julie Swetnick, 55, who was the third woman to come forward to accuse Kavanaugh of sexual assault, allegedly failed to pay over $100,000 in taxes and fees in Maryland and to the Internal Revenue Service since 2015
The state of Maryland filed a $62,000 tax lien against her home in Washington, D.C
in October 2015, claiming she owed $32,000 in back taxes dating to 2008, and the additional amount in interest
The case was settled in 2016. Her attorney- Michael Avenatti - said she paid off all her debts in full
Swetnick also allegedly owed $40,303 to the IRS stemming from unpaid 2014 taxes, resulting in a federal tax lien on her home in October 2017
That lien was resolved in March of 2018. Swetnick, an IT consultant who owns a company called International Business Solutions, says in an online resume that she has worked for the State Department, the Department of Justice, and other federal agencies
Her attorney, Michael Avenatti, said his client currently holds a federal security clearance
He told DailyMail.com: 'They have been fully paid and are irrelevant to her claims
Why are you digging up dirt on and attacking a sexual abuse victim?'Swetnick stepped forward on Wednesday to claim in the early 1980s she witnessed Brett Kavanaugh and his high school classmate Mark Judge drug and sexually assault girls during high school parties
Swetnick wrote in an affidavit that she met Kavanaugh and Judge at a party in 1980 or 1981
Swetnick, who graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1980, was three years older than the boys at the time
She also attended a public high school, while the two boys attended the elite Washington prep school Georgetown Prep
Kavanaugh, who has so far denied all of the sexual assault allegations against him, said he has never met Swetnick
'This is ridiculous and from the Twilight Zone,' he said on Wednesday. 'I don't know who this is and this never happened
'Swetnick's parents Martin and her late mother Elaine were both government workers
Her father worked for NASA as a lunar scientist and her mother Elaine was a geologist with the Atomic Energy Commission
He told the Washington Post that he was shocked at the allegations, but had been almost entirely estranged from his daughter for 10 years
He said she was a 'typical girl', and added: 'She was not shy. She was a good-looking girl
'But he said he had little insight into her high school years as he had been traveling a lot and added: 'She lived her life
We didn't discuss it.' She had failed to complete college and later became a web developer, gaining government contracts
'She never went to college, but she bootstrapped herself and became a computer expert,' her father said
' She's a sharp woman.'Swetnick said in an affidavit that she attended at least 10 parties with Kavanaugh and Judge between 1981 and 1983
She claims she witnessed them spiking 'punch' drinks with drugs and alcohol in order to get female partygoers incapacitated and run group sex 'trains' on them
Swetnick said she witnessed groups of boys raping the intoxicated girls, and saw boys lining up outside bedrooms to wait their turn to have group sex with the young women

'I have a firm recollection of seeing boys lined up outside rooms at many of these parties waiting for their 'turn' with a girl inside the room,' she added
According to Swetnick, she saw Kavanaugh and Judge waiting in line during these group rape episodes
Swetnick said she was also gang-raped at one of these parties in 1982 after having her drink spiked with what she believes was Quaaludes
She said Kavanaugh and Judge were also at this party, but did not specify whether the two boys participated in assaulting her
'In approximately 1982, I became a victim of one of these 'gang' or 'train' rapes where Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh were present,' she said
'During the incident, I was incapacitated without my consent and unable to fight off the boys raping me
'Swetnick attended Montgomery County Community College after graduating from high school in 1980
