10 Phrasal Verbs with CHECK: check in, check out, check for... - Duration: 9:07.
And I'm back with the torture of phrasal verbs.
I know everyone hates phrasal verbs; I hate them, too, because there're so many of them.
They're confusing, but cool; I'm going to teach them to you.
My name's Ronnie, and I am going to make you check out this lesson.
So, today's lesson is phrasal verbs of "check".
So, we have, first of all, the construction of a phrasal verb.
A phrasal verb is a verb with a preposition, or two prepositions just to make it fancy.
A preposition you think of as placement; up, out, in, for, off, into, blah, blah, blah.
So, these are what make English very confusing, and people look at the sky, like: "Check up.
Why am I up?
No.
Down.
No."
So, if you...
For example, if you "check up on someone", this means that you want to make sure that
they are okay or that they're not doing something bad.
So, you will hear this a lot in movies where the teenager will say: "Mom, are you checking
up on me"?
"Mom, are you checking up on me?" this means someone is concerned about what you are doing.
Like I said, maybe you're doing something bad or maybe you're sick, so someone will
come check up on you to make sure you are okay.
So, we have two meanings; one's good, one's bad.
If you "check out"...
You maybe have heard this in a hotel; you might see: "Check-out time".
But, as a phrasal verb, "check out" means you physically leave the hotel.
Also, if you go shopping and you're ready to pay for something, you can check out, which
means you pay at a store.
In a supermarket, there's a check-out...
Check-out, girl.
There's a sort of check-out area; that's a noun.
So: "I'm going to check out" we can also use.
The opposite for "check out" is "check in".
So, when you enter the hotel, you're going to confirm a reservation.
Also, if you're going on an airplane-I want to go on an airplane-you go to the counter
and you check in, so you confirm your reservation on an airplane, or you confirm or you get
a hotel room.
If you "check for something", you're going to search or you're going to examine something
for...
To make sure it's there or not there.
A common problem we have with children around the world...
I remember when I was in elementary school, we all had to get checked for lice.
Lice are little bugs that live in people's hair.
So, we had to get checked, so: "We checked for lice."
So, the nurse came in and looked at everyone's head, made sure you had no bugs roaming around.
I didn't have lice.
Yes.
Cool.
Have you ever had lice?
It's cool; you just get some shampoo; everything's good.
Don't tell anyone.
It's kind of...
Maybe you won't have any friends if you have lice.
So, we checked for lice.
"Check off" is, like, a checkmark.
So, a checkmark is this, and you check something off a list.
So, you can make...
For example: "I checked off another point on my list."
Maybe you have a bucket list.
A bucket list are...
Is a list of things you would like to do, like: "I want to skydive."
So, you skydive, you come back, and you...
You check off skydiving on your list.
Have you gone skydiving before?
I haven't.
I'd like to.
We can also "check into"-which is different from "check in"-a hospital.
Now, I know what you're thinking.
You're thinking: "Ronnie, why do we check in on an airplane, but we check into a hospital?"
I don't know.
Okay?
I didn't make these stupid phrasal verbs; I'm just teaching them to you, so I don't
know.
Maybe get in your time machine, go back in time and change it, or ask someone in your
magical time machine, because I don't know.
But you check into a hotel.
As an example, if you use the future: "We will check him into the hospital."
Not hotel.
It's certainly not a hotel.
If you check your luggage through, this sometimes can be a little bit troublesome because this
is how luggage gets lost most of the time.
So, imagine you are flying from destination A, then you have a stopover in destination
B, and your final destination is C. So, the airline company says: "Guess what?
We will check your luggage through to your final destination of C." Yay.
So, you go on your merry way, you go to your transfer point in B, and by the time you get
to your final destination at point C, you're waiting for your luggage.
Oh, no, you're the last person.
There's no luggage.
Where's your luggage?
So, you go to the counter and you say: "Hey.
My luggage was checked through to San Francisco."
And the airline company goes: "Well, it's not here."
Oh, yeah.
Bye-bye; it's lost.
So, losing luggage is not a good thing, but they can tell you: "We will check it through."
So, this means they pretend they will send your luggage to your final destination.
Good luck, luggage.
It's a big tour.
We can also say "check with".
So, maybe you ask someone: "Hey, hey.
I have this great idea.
Let's do it."
And the person says: -"Nah, I got to check with Bob."
-"Who's Bob?
Let's do it."
-"No."
So, if you "check with someone", you're going to confirm something.
You're going to confirm information or you're going to confirm that something is okay to
do.
I don't like this.
It's important, though.
You're going to check with someone.
We have another phrase that we use in slang all the time.
People will say: -"Hey, check it out!"
-"Check...
Check...
Check what out?
What?
What are you talking about: Check?
I can't check anything."
-"Check it out".
"Check it out" means: "Hey, go look at something over there."
Or...
Bless me.
"Go examine it."
If you say: "Hey.
Check out my new video."
That means: "Hey.
Look at my new video."
We have another expression: "check him/her out".
This basically just means: Look at her.
You will see some people, maybe at the mall, and they're watching people, and they go:
"Hey, check her out."
Or: "Hey, check him out."
This can be positive or negative.
Maybe someone is very strange looking or it's me, and people go: "Hey, check her out.
What's she doing?
That's weird."
So that can be a good thing or a bad thing.
Another good thing or a bad thing, depending on who's doing it: If someone is checking
you out.
Okay, you're not shopping at the mall.
If he's checking you out or she's checking you out, he or she is looking at your body.
Excuse me?
Or they're...
They're checking you out to see if they like you.
So, maybe you go to a bar or you go to a restaurant, or you go somewhere, and you see someone looking
at you.
"Huh?
Huh?
Huh?"
And they wink.
"Do you have something in your eye?
No, okay."
This person is checking you out; they're looking at you to see if they like you.

The NBA's biggest superstar is undoubtedly LeBron James.
He may not be having his best season right now, but we all know how much "King James" turns his game up when it matters most.
The only difference is this time he's with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Right now, the Lakers are still trying to find their team chemistry.
While we are a quarter of the way into the season, it's technically still early.
Finding team chemistry doesn't happen overnight.
The Lakers may not be flawless on the court, but it really seems like they have a good thing going off the court out in Los Angeles.
Before, LeBron's leadership had come off as a bit extreme when he arrived back in Cleveland for his second stint.
But so far out in L.A., everything seems like it's going swiftly between LeBron and his teammates.
Maybe it's because this time LeBron is playing with fewer veteran stars and more young developmental players.
Regardless though, this Lakers team seems to get along well.
I mean, they can make jokes about each other off the court, and nobody gets upset.
Remember when Lonzo Ball and Kyle Kuzma had fake 'beef' last season? Well, Kuzma is looking for more smoke apparently as he 'clowned' LeBron on Twitter for calling himself washed up.

Earlier on Wednesday, LeBron tweeted out that he slept for a total of 11 hours, and missed an entire Holiday party because of it.
Therefore, making himself 'washed.' Not at basketball, obviously.
But because he slept for more than the average of eight hours.
Some would be lucky to even have that.
But I guess when you're LeBron James, it won't make that much of a difference.
We're sure his company would understand.
As for Kuzma, he busted out the jokes on LeBron for his old man tweet.
Kuzma didn't hold anything back while taking a shot at the 33-year-old superstar.
Fans quickly flocked to the tweet to make comments, and as you can expect, the comments revolved around jokes that Kuzma was getting benched or traded for his actions.
After all, LeBron is the first player/coach/general manager in the eyes of many.
We'll see if LeBron responds to keep this joke ongoing.

Much has been made as of late about where Kevin Durant will play after this NBA season.
The popular consensus seems to be that it won't be with the Golden State Warriors.
And based on his comments in a recent interview, he didn't seem overly-thrilled about the idea of joining LeBron James either.
But apparently, Durant sees even less of a fit with LeBron for someone like Toronto Raptors star Kawhi Leonard.
In an interview with Bleacher Report's Ric Bucher, Durant addressed the topic of teaming up with James and why it's not a fit for some players.
"It depends on what kind of player you are," Durant said.
"If you're Kyle Korver, then it makes sense.
Because Kyle Korver in Atlanta was the bulk of the offense, and he's not a No.
1 option at all, not even close.
So his talents benefit more from a guy who can pass and penetrate and get him open.
"If you're a younger player like a Kawhi, trying to pair him with LeBron James doesn't really make sense.
Kawhi enjoys having the ball in his hands, controlling the offense, dictating the tempo with his post-ups; it's how he plays the game.
A lot of young players are developing that skill.
They don't need another guy.".
It's an interesting point and especially stands out because it comes from Durant.
But Bucher goes on to point out that James may need a player like Leonard at this point in his career.
Another player who chimed in to offer a similar sentiment was Phoenix Suns forward Trevor Ariza.
In the same story, Ariza told Bucher he can see why players who are similar to James would "want to play elsewhere.".
What Is the Right Fit With LeBron James?.
Durant mentioned Kyle Korver as an example of a fit with LeBron, and that pairing unquestionably makes sense.
But while trade rumors consistently swirl involving big names coming to the Lakers, or even just future free agent targets for the team, how would it all work? Leonard is a ball-dominant player who can facilitate on his own, and the same can be said about Durant, so those two should realistically be ruled out.
In turn, that would leave the Lakers and their push for another superstar looking at a mid-range target who simply has upside.
Or, maybe someone like Bradley Beal who can excel as a shooter and create his own shot if needed.
A player such as Beal would not only provide a strong scoring punch, but also the ability to take some of the heavy lifting off LeBron.
Role players including strong defenders, great outside shooters or players capable of providing a scoring punch off the bench have been the typical choices to join James.
But the Lakers and entire NBA will likely find out next offseason whether that is set to change moving forward.

The James Conner show just became the Jaylen Samuels show for the Pittsburgh Steelers, at least for one week.
After Conner suffered a leg injury during the team's Week 13 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, there didn't seem to be much concern about his status moving forward.
But that changed on Monday, as the team's starting running back will miss at least one game.
It's a tough blow for the Steelers, as they find themselves at 7-4-1 after the loss to the Chargers, just narrowly ahead of the Baltimore Ravens atop the AFC North.
With Samuels now set to do the heavy lifting in Week 14, let's take a look at whether he's a fantasy football start or sit.
Matchup and Workload for Jaylen Samuels.
Much of the decision on how to approach Samuels will come down to your specific situation.
If you're in need of a one-week (or possibly a bit longer) filler, then the rookie out of North Carolina State could make sense.
The matchup against the Raiders isn't daunting, as they've allowed 1,566 yards on 307 carries to opposing running backs this year.
Along with that, Oakland has given up 40 receptions for 413 yards through the air with 12 combined touchdowns.
It's a fine spot for Samuels, who's coming off a fairly quiet game, but one in which he saw a bump in touches after Conner's injury.
Samuels only had two rushing attempts for five yards but caught all three of his targets for 20 yards and one touchdown.
There's unquestionable value in Samuels' game from a fantasy perspective, but a big question will be whether he can handle a large workload.
Regardless, his main backfield competition in Stevan Ridley hasn't been involved over the past three games at all, pointing to the fact that the rookie is the new top option at this point.
Update.
As ESPN's Jeremy Fowler revealed, Samuels will start against the Raiders, but he will split time with Ridley.
He still makes sense as a fine fantasy option.

Should You Start or Sit Jaylen Samuels?.
Barring a change to the Steelers depth chart, it's hard not to like the appeal of Samuels from a fantasy perspective.
Specifically, the young back has a lot of value in point-per-reception leagues at this point.
Unless Pittsburgh opts to flip the script and give Ridley a primary role, Samuels looks set to receive his chance to prove he can handle a larger workload.
Based on the Raiders allowing 5.1 yards per carry and struggling defensively, along with a huge workload boost, there's no issue using Samuels in fantasy leagues in Week 14.
I'd primarily stick to PPR leagues if at all possible, but if you have a need for a RB or flex play in 12-team leagues or above, you could do far worse than the 22-year-old.
