When King David was settled in his palace,
and the Lord had given him rest from his enemies
on every side,
he said to Nathan the prophet,
"Here I am living in a house of Seder,
"while the arc of God dwells in a tent."
Nathan answered the king, "Go, do whatever you have in mind,
"for the Lord is with you."
But that night, the Lord spoke to Nathan and said,
"Go tell my servant David, thus says the Lord,
"should you build me a house to dwell in?
"It was I who took you from the pasture
and from the care of the flock
"to be commander of my people Israel.
"I have been with you wherever you went,
"and I have destroyed all your enemies before you,
"and I will make you famous
"like the great ones of the earth.
"I will fix a place for my people Israel.
"I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place
"without further disturbance.
"Neither shall the wicked
"continue to afflict them as they did of old,
"since the time I first appointed judges
"over my people Israel.
"I will give you rest from all your enemies."
"The Lord also reveals to you
"that He will establish a house for you,
"and when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors,
"I will raise up your heir after you,
"and sprung from loins,
"and I will make his kingdom firm.
"I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me.

- [Crowd] Glory to You, oh Lord.
- The angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph
of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said, "Hail, full of grace,
"the Lord is with you."
But she was greatly troubled at what was said,
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
"Do not be afraid, Mary,
"for you have found favor with God.
"Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
"and you shall name him Jesus.
"He will be great, and will be called son of the most high,
"and the Lord God will give him the throne
"of David, His father,
"and He will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
"and of His kingdom there will be no end."
But Mary said to the angel,
"How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?"
And the angel said to her in reply,
"The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
"and the power of the most high will overshadow you.
"Therefore the child to be born
"will be called holy, the Son of God.
"And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
"has also conceived a son in her old age,
"and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren,
"for nothing will be impossible for God."
Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
"May it be done to me according to your word."
And the angel departed from her.
Gospel of the Lord.
- [Crowd] Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
- So we've reached the final Sunday of Advent,
and in Advent, that is as short as it can possibly be,
December 24th also being Christmas Eve.
Advent, a time of preparing ourselves
to recognize and to celebrate
Christ's presence in the world,
both historically and in an ongoing and timeless way.
And so I think this Gospel account of the annunciation
is an ideal culmination to the season
as we recall Mary's emphatic yes
to all that was being asked of her.
At the end of Advent,
we prepare ourself to recognize
Christ's presence in our world and in our lives,
and what better response could there be
than to simply say yes?
In a world that's driven by selfishness
and a drive to push oneself ahead of others,
Mary's selfless act stands
as a challenge to our modern society.
Even in her own time, Mary's decision
must have been both enormously difficult
and one that had the potential
of bringing great shame on herself and Joseph,
yet her decision is made swiftly and in faith.
She trusts God absolutely,
and gives her life over to God's hands,
and that's perhaps the supreme act of faith:
to say yes to God so completely
that you are prepared to hand over
the direction and the control of your own life.
Few of us will ever be visited by angels
who lay out God's plan clearly like Gabriel did for Mary.
For most of us, it's more often a challenge
to discern God's desire for us,
to realize what it is we are called to do
and to give ourselves fully to that call.
In the hustle and bustle of life,
perhaps it's difficult to hear anything
that God may be trying to ask of us.
Perhaps the example of Mary's yes
is a reminder to be still enough
to hear the question in the first place.
Throughout the gospel of Luke,
there's also a great importance placed
on the people in society called the lessor ones,
or the least of these.
The mission of Jesus, as described in Luke's gospel
is directed toward those
who were unimportant in the eyes of society,
and in the society of the first century,
those ranking on the bottom of the ladder
were definitely women,
and perhaps even most especially young women.
So it's significant that the first revelation of Jesus
is made to Mary.
The angel Gabriel announces that Mary has won God's favor,
and for a woman to win God's favor
would've been unimaginable for many Jews in Mary's time,
and so this truly was astonishing news.
In recent years, successive Popes have reminded us
that the best devotion to Mary
is the one that leads us to do what she did:
to say yes to Jesus.
Mary is not a stop on the journey of faith,
she's a guide post that always sends us on to Christ.
Mary doesn't save us, for we believe
that she needed to be saved by Christ as well,
and that's why she could say yes in the first place.
Mary recognized the gift and the giver,
and became the bearer of God for the world.
So in this final day of Advent,
let's keep reminding ourselves
of this simple but life-changing fact:
Jesus saves us.
Jesus saves us from death.
Jesus saves us from living lives
devoid of purpose and meaning,
and Jesus saves us from ourselves.
Let us profess our faith.
- [All] I believe in one God, the Father almighty,
Maker of Heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages,
God from God, light from light, true God from true God.
Begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father.
Through Him, all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation, He came down from Heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary
and became man.
For our sake, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into Heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and His Kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sin,
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.

Lord holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ.
For all the oracles of the prophets foretold Him.
The Virgin Mother longed for Him
with love beyond all telling.
John the Baptist sang of His coming
and proclaimed His presence when He came.
It is by His gift that already we rejoice
at the mystery of His nativity,
so that He may find us watchful in prayer
