Here are hidden dangers we had no clue about!
9 - The Graveyard Shift
In 2016, it was estimated that three million Americans work the graveyard shift or third
shift, which is defined as between 11pm and 7am.
An additional four million employees go to work during the evening shift, and even more
people work floating or erratic schedules that include night work.
According to the report, one in five employees in the U.S. work nonstandard hours.
However, the hours we work apparently have different effects on our health!
We can't just trick our body into thinking night is day and just pretend it's all the
same because the evidence is clear that it's not the same!
The list of associated health risks include a higher chance of obesity, a higher chance
of cardiovascular disease, and even a higher chance of breast cancer!
Actually, in Denmark, the Danish Board of Industrial Injuries recognizes night working
as a cause of breast cancer and says employers can be liable for compensation.
In 2009, a Scandinavian airline employee diagnosed with breast cancer who worked non-standard
hours decided to sue the airline.
She won in a much-publicized case.
Night shifts should only be done if it's absolutely necessary.
And hopefully, those employees are properly compensated!
What do you guys think about this issue?
Let us know!
And also do us a favor an hit the thumbs up!
8 - Chewing gum, The Graveyard Shift Wait what?!
Chewing gum?!
Well, it's during a specific activity.
It's the act of chewing gum during exercise that's a dangerous activity if you're
not paying attention.
When you work out, you breathe harder obviously, and you're most likely breathing through
the mouth.
Now imagine that you're exercising while chewing gum and suddenly, without warning,
it gets lodged in your throat and you begin to choke.
If you were alone, the chances are pretty slim to get outta this situation.
Even if you were lucky enough to have someone around who knew how to perform the heimlich
maneuver, choking on gum is a different situation than regular food!
Since gum is flexible in texture, it tends to mold itself to fit perfectly in the airway
once it gets stuck.
Even with applying the Heimlich maneuver, there really aren't any guarantees that
it'll work.
Yeah, let's not chew gum while we're on the treadmill guys!
7 - Paint Chips, Chewing gum, The Graveyard Shift
Wait a minute, we all know not to eat paint chips!
I hope so anyways!
But just hear us out.
If you live in an older home that was built before the 1970s, there's likely to be lead
based paint lurking in your walls.
Lead was banned from paint in 1978 when it became apparent that children were suffering
from lead poisoning as it negatively affects brain development.
However, somehow, even today, there are still many cases of lead poisoning in kids.
How is this still happening even with the common knowledge of lead paint in older homes?
The cause is still household paint!
However, the problem is that apparently a lot of people just covered up the lead paint.
With the under layers of wall paint not stripped off, it still leads to lead poisoning to happen
in children.
Over time, whether naturally or from general wear and tear, paint peels and chips away
from walls.
These paint chips and particles infiltrate the air and land on surfaces where children
walk, play and crawl.
And we all know that kids essentially will put almost anything in their mouths!
So if you have kids or are planning to have kids and you live in an older house, get your
walls tested for lead!
6 - Skinny fat, Paint Chips, Chewing gum, The Graveyard Shift
We all know those people who eat junk food constantly and never exercise but they don't
seem to put on weight.
On the outside, they appear healthy, but on the inside, their bodies may tell a totally
different story.
Just because they're not overweight doesn't mean skinny people aren't without their
own health issues.
A study in 2017 proved that these people could be at an even bigger health risk than previously
thought.
The study revealed the hidden dangers of people who still carry fat around their vital organs
despite not appearing to be overweight at all.
The fat that builds up around abdominal organs including the heart and kidneys is much more
dangerous.
Called visceral fat, this fat is especially dangerous because these fat cells do more
than just sit there and cause your pants to feel tight.
Visceral fat is capable of provoking inflammatory pathways and signaling molecules that can
interfere with the body's normal hormonal functions.
If someone never eats vegetables, loves junk food, hasn't exercised in years and yet
remains thin, then they're probably "skinny fat."
As a prevention, some experts think the term "overfat" should be used instead of terms
such as "overweight" or "obese" because, in the end, your weight and BMI don't matter
as much as body fat percentage does!
5 - Smartphone thumb, Skinny fat, Paint Chips, Chewing gum, The Graveyard Shift
Are you the typical millennial and you're glued to your smartphone?
A condition that doctors used to only see in factory workers is becoming more widespread
in 2018.
The pain that comes from the repetitive movements of texting has been dubbed "smartphone thumb"
by doctors.
It's actually just tendinitis, because the tendon that bends and flexes the thumb becomes
inflamed.
More and more people are complaining about this type of pain in their thumb each year!
One of the hypotheses for the "smartphone thumb" is that the joints get loose, and
because of that, the bones kind of move differently than they would in a normal situation.
Some doctors have been studying the "smartphone thumb" for the last seven years.
Their conclusion was that the movements we require our thumbs to make as we hold our
phones are awkward and unnatural and could lead to an early onset of osteoarthritis.
Doctors say that to prevent problems, start by giving your thumbs a break.
Mix up your method by using your index finger to peck the screen, or use voice messaging!
4 - Air fresheners, Smartphone thumb, Skinny fat, Paint Chips, Chewing gum, The Graveyard
Shift When we walk into a bathroom, we'd rather
smell the air freshener than the alternative, am I right?
However, the air-fresheners in bathrooms aren't exactly the best things for us.
A new study by a professor of the University of Melbourne has found that more than a third
of people report adverse health problems such as headaches, dizziness, asthma attacks, and
even seizures when exposed to common fragrance products.
The problem is becoming increasingly common as the use of scented products grows.
Many home fragrances contain volatile organic compounds that just cover odors.
A common compound found in air fresheners is formaldehyde, which is classified as a
probable human carcinogen.
According to the study, approximately 99 percent of Australians are exposed to these fragrance
products at least once a week and things probably aren't any different in the US.
The study found that it didn't matter what the product was, nor did it matter whether
the product was "natural" or "organic".
Essential oils and so-called 'natural' fragranced products can pose the same health hazards,
and it's tough to distinguish what's safe or not because not all manufacturers list
all of the ingredients on the label.
3 - Toasted skin syndrome, Air fresheners, Smartphone thumb, Skinny fat, Paint Chips,
Chewing gum, The Graveyard Shift If you've ever used a laptop computer, you've
probably sat with it on your lap and noticed that it can get quite hot.
Really hot in fact.
And you may have heard that having a laptop on your lap can potentially be hazardous to
your health because of the heat coming off of it.
While the computer doesn't get hot enough to actually burn you, it can still lead to
problems, such as toasted skin syndrome.
It's a condition that can also be caused by other activities, such as sitting for too
long in front of a fireplace or using a heated blanket repeatedly.
The development of the condition is still unknown.
It's been proposed that thermal radiation exposure can cause damage to superficial blood
vessels that subsequently leads to vascular dilation.
There was a case of an obese patient who was resting the laptop on his belly and later
on, developed discoloration that wouldn't go away.
The prolonged placement of a laptop on your thighs results in a thermal buildup of around
111 Fahrenheit, which is enough to burn the outer layer of the skin and cause depigmentation!
2 - Beached Whale, Toasted skin syndrome, Air fresheners, Smartphone thumb, Skinny fat,
Paint Chips, Chewing gum, The Graveyard Shift Back in April 2014, a giant blue whale washed
ashore at Trout River, Newfoundland in Canada.
But really, what's the danger of that?
Well, the whale kept expanding and if seen from a distance, it kinda looked like a giant
balloon.
The beached whale was near Trout River's historic boardwalk, and the stench filled
the air.
The giant whale was drawing tourists close, and the main concern at the time was that
it could explode with so people nearby.
Trout River authorities tried to keep people away and they were looking to find a government
agency who had the capability of moving the whale.
I mean, not every small town would have equipment available to move beached whales right?!
But as many marine mammal experts have learned over the years, moving a giant whale is an
extremely difficult problem.
With all the gas trapped inside, the possibility that the whale could explode was very real,
as whales HAVE exploded before.
In 2004 in Taiwan, the buildup of gas inside a decomposing sperm whale caused it to burst
in a crowded urban area while it was being taken in for an examination.
The most well-known case of an "exploding whale" happened in November 1970, at an event
in Florence, Oregon, when a sperm whale was deliberately blown up using dynamite in an
attempt to dispose of its rotting carcass.
The explosion threw whale flesh over 800 feet away and let's just say, the whole thing
didn't end nicely.
1 - Plastics, Beached Whale, Toasted skin syndrome, Air fresheners, Smartphone thumb,
Skinny fat, Paint Chips, Chewing gum, The Graveyard Shift
Plastics are everywhere in modern society and easily help to save many lives with its
use in modern medical equipment.
But are the potential health risks of certain plastics so great that they outweigh the benefits?
Should we avoid all the different assortment of plastic products in our daily lives that
contain BPA?
It turns out, we should.
In the US, local and state governments are banning the sale of baby bottles that contain
BPA, which stands for bisphenol A. BPA mimics estrogen in our body and affects hormonal
balance, so many people try to stay away from the toxin by using BPA-free plastics instead.
However, a recent study suggests that even BPA-free plastics could also contain endocrine
disruptors.
In a test of fourteen resins used in plastic production, four were found to have estrogen-like
properties!
The CDC says BPA is present in detectable levels in 93 percent of Americans ages 6 and
older.
Plastic has infiltrated food as well.
No one really knows how plastic is getting into our food, but what we do know is this.
The less plastic we're exposed to, the better!
Here's what's next!
