hi everyone its Keren Tamir here and welcome to the Prima marketing Facebook
page I'm doing a live show today where I'm upcycling packaging from a certain a
certain packaging one Facebook I asked people what they thought this was and
nobody could come up with what it was people guessed it was a tray and I did
turn it into a tree but it is not a tray it is actually a packaging from
something and I'll show you the other one because what happened is that I got
two of them why I got two of them and I'll show you how it looks it looks like
this and these two were packaged like this together and you can see the other
one is like this and it had my hard drive in it I needed a new hard drive
because I ran out of room in my other one and it's an external hard drive and
I think this is where the cord goes so when I looked at it I thought I can do
something with this you know me I love upcycling things I've up cycled food
trays i upcycle basically everything recycle upcycle I love using recycled
materials but I think a recycling is when you actually send it to the
recycling bin what I'm cycling is actually turning it into something else
like art and I thought this was a great idea it even has a little thing here
where you could hang it so you could even turn it this into an ornament you
could do a display so I wanted to I don't know I had the idea of kind of do
something like this which I wanted to do you know those butterfly displays where
you take real butterflies that are not alive anymore and you put them in and
display them so this is kind of the idea what I wanted to do I wanted to keep it
simple and really easy to do just to kind of show you some of the techniques
and it's really really simple really not any logic or a very hard mixed media in
this I thought it would be fun to do this and I'm going to put this one aside
so you can refer to it but I'm gonna start with this one for the background
if you can see I have a lot of texture in this okay pre-market makes amazing
pastes texture paste there's so many different
ones and I have this one this is the white sand paste you could also use the
graphite paste I wanted something that is quite coarse and very I wanted
something that is coarse very like thick and will give me a good a really good
texture so these ones come in a tube these ones are sold at Michael's in a
package with a lot of other mediums but you can buy this one in a big pot as
well now for this I could easily oh there it's opened okay
I could easily first add the black gesso our white texture and then and then add
it again but I was being lazy and I don't want to do that so what I'm going
to do is I'm going to just add it first dry it and then paint it with Jessel
so this is a really easy first layer so all I do is I just add it here I don't
like this one hold on maybe I'll use this this is better it's my silicone
brush I'll put some on the table and I'm just going to basically add it to the
edges quite easily into the borders to create kind of a textured border I try
to keep the inside as smooth as possible but I want at the borders to be very
highly textured so this is what I did and you just apply it it's really really
easy you can get easier than this so I just continue applying the texture paste
I'm trying not to put it too thick because I don't want it to take forever
to dry but I still want thick enough that it will it will show when I dry it
now I did not put anything as I said in the center but I don't know why I feel
like putting something here today so I'm going to put a little bit of texture
here in the center not in these panels but just right in the center I feel like
this one was missing some of them so all I'm doing is just smoothing it out with
silicone brush and that is it it's really really simple now another thing I
want to do since I don't tight on time and this is like supposed to be a quick
project I want to glue some of the elements already on it so since I
already have the paste here and I'm just spreading it a little bit more I don't
have to do much it's already the paste is already there but although the paste
will glue things I do prefer adding a little bit more of the gel and I'm going
to use some heavy gel to do that so while this is kind of air drying oh I
forgot to add some here so while this is air drying I can go ahead and add some
more things so the first thing I did is I pick these three bottle caps just so I
could raise the butterflies a little bit and then I pick the butterflies they're
rusted butterflies and I glue these and set them up on top the way I set them up
here so I'm going to do the same thing with
this this way when I'm drying I'm kind of doing two things at once it's like
you know killing two birds with one stone although I don't really like that
saying but you know what I mean right so I'm adding it to the edges so as you can
see sometimes it's hard to stick things that don't have about a flat bottom so
I'm going to kind of Center this one and since I have that paste it's already
helping as well I think this one will have to be a bit higher
and I have this little one here and I'm gonna have the medium-sized one now I
could have put them in order in terms of height but I really felt like the big
butterfly needed to be in the center because it was kind of like the focal
point and I didn't want it to to be kind of at the bottom yeah I don't think it
would have looked as well so that's why I did it the way I did
and now I'm going to glue the butterflies because I know that I can
get in with a paintbrush when I paint so it's just easier to have everything dry
because I don't want to double dry everything so this while I draw the
paste the actual glue is going to I mean the gel is gonna glue SME and dry as
well so I'm putting the little one here and you can use anything for raising
this you could even use cardboard if you really want you don't have to use these
bottle caps if you don't have them well you could just save bottle caps from
coke bottles or beer bottles that's acceptable as well and then I'm going to
glue this one over here and finally I'm going to glue the big
one and I'm raising the wings a little bit just so it's easy so it looks like
as if they're going to fly not that they're dead even though they're made
out of a metal but I do like it when it's they have a little bit of reality
to them okay so there we go I have all three things set all three
butterflies said hold on this one has to be moved a little bit and then I'm going
to dry while I dry it also gives me an opportunity to kind of clean up my space
see what else could I use okay so Sharon and asking what else could he use for
the base truthfully anything you could make your own little you could use a box
or you could use you know a cardboard box like this this is from the Prima
flowers or any type of would work any type of tray root tray
wooden tray basically anything goes I mean you can you can use any type of
kind of shadow box looking tray and make your own you could use a small canvas
backwards and use a shadow box I've done that a lot but I've used like canvases
for shadow boxes that's a great idea okay so it's almost dry and I'm going to
be impatient and just try and see if it works so I'm gonna be using the heavy
white I mean heavy black gesso to just paint everything I'm gonna start with
the center and we're gonna grab this paint brush which is a little bit bigger
and then go with a smaller one so I know that gel is part probably partially dry
it's at least things are not moving so that's good
so I'm starting with that and then I will go into the sides of the box so
this is really easy this is nothing new that you've learned a lot of people know
this technique of adding the black gesso and then adding metallic paints so
there's no really secret to this it's just covering everything with black so
then when you add the paint's they kind of create beautiful highlights on the
surface and that's the beauty of it I love that technique
it gives amazing effects especially with metallic paints or waxes so I'm kind of
going to hold it in my hand I want to be quicker
these are boring parts the best part is adding the paint but you have to do
these boring parts in order to get into the more fun parts afterwards in
sometimes some of my projects I literally have to let them dry overnight
and that's super frustrating because I want to work on the project right now I
don't want to wait until tomorrow so that is a little bit frustrating for
me I know for many artists but you do what
you do and you know you'd know that if you wanted your project to turn out
really well you need to let this dry now you could sit and dry this the way I did
right now but I find that really boring so I go do something else so I start
another project and then I go and finish it up the next day okay a little bit
more I'm gonna soon use a smaller brush just because I need to get in there to
the areas so on a regular basis you could first paint it and then add the
butterflies and wait and then you don't have to like struggle with trying to get
in-between the embellishments but because I'm short on time I'm doing it
all at once so that's the reason why the nice thing about gesso is that it dries
really quickly so as I'm doing one side the other one basically dries or almost
fully dries so heat setting it doesn't take that long which is great because as
I say I don't have a lot of patience so I'm gonna get our smaller paintbrush
just to kind of mix get in between there so let me dry this top it's done look
how quickly that was done and the nice thing about the background is that it's
made out of carton cardboard box or cardboard right so if you can see the
back so it really holds medium really well and you're basically recycling it
because otherwise you would just be throwing it out in the recycling bin or
in the garbage so this way you can actually create something nicer okay so
now that I have this dry I'm going to show you the colors I'm going to use so
this is kind of like a metallic set it has the silver it has the gold and it
has a bronze so it is called steampunk Papa copper this is the gold koenkan
coin and silver spoon so really cool names I also use some of this ones these
you can find anywhere these specifically the specific colors you can find
anywhere and I think I use these come with three colors which is the brass
higher we're the dark velvet and this pink one
that I'm not vintage blue no vintage Rose can see well okay so I'm going to
start kind of adding color I'm gonna start with this color which is the
steampunk copper and in order to add these the best technique that I found is
to do a dry brush technique that way you still get the shadows from the black
underneath and you only get some highlights on the background but to do
this you need to rehab your paint brush really really dry so I'm going to show
you on the sides and here so I lightly
touch the background that way you still get those shadows underneath I
prefer doing it this way and starting with a little bit and if I like it I can
always add more but it's really hard to remove after you added it and this kind
of makes it look ancient which I really really like I'm using a wipe here on the
side to kind of wipe off and dry off the excess paint and it's just basically
adding like it's so simple and the reason why I'm going so softly with this
because I really want a texture to kind of peek out from from the background and
if I start covering it all you will still see the texture but it will not
have those shadows from with the black okay now I'm gonna add a different color
they do all sides so I really like this copper and the gold I'm gonna add both
of them and I play back and forth between them that's what happens with me
I just love playing with the different colors and I'm not going to add this one
everywhere so I'm going to add it in certain areas because otherwise it just
takes over and then see the brass underneath so the brass
kind of went everywhere but the gold is going to go in different places and look
how beautiful it had what happens when you added to the butterflies as well so
they kind of become shadowed by the black how beautiful is that and you can
add some copper to them as well so it's just playing with the paints I love
playing with the paints that's basically what I like doing and you can start
adding more color and let it blend in so these paints are very highly metallic
they're pigmented with some sparkling colors so it's really nice because they
shine brightly and sometimes there's so much on the lid itself that I don't
actually need to go into the pot itself to do anything so again you make sure
you dab it onto your mat before adding and this color is beautiful so I just
want to show you the sides see I'm adding it in certain areas I don't want
it all the same I'm trying to blend the colors together and that helps to kind
of make it look antique you could also put in some patina in this if you want
to I chose to put purple color instead of patina but that's up to you right
like you can you can do what you want and I'm adding some of the copper in the
center here of the butterflies to give them a little bit of shine now I'm going
to add it the purple and this one is going to go underneath at the bottom the
reason why is this purple is quite dark and it gives an amazing shadow to the
background paint it in here as well and a bit on the sides I love this purple I
don't know what it is called dark velvet it's beautiful I mean you could add some
of the purple also some purple highlights so that's what I'm doing and
now I'm gonna add a little bit of this so with the smaller paintbrush I kind of
created these lines here and now I'm gonna add a little bit of the gold so
now you could add a little bit of the coal you see like the nice thing about
these paints that you can use them like the waxes you could add some of that
gold or you can go with this wax you remember the aged brass is with my
favorite and you could use your finger to add the same thing on the edges so
you see that's the same effect which is what's nice about it so there we go
but now added too much light so what I have to do usually is that I have to
kind of play around with the darkness and the light and what I mean by that is
like now I've added too much light on to this so then I can go ahead and add a
little bit of the darker colors inside in the middle to kind of balance that
out so that's what I'm doing here and it kind of creates a little bit of that
like a realistic look to the butterfly right so you have that dark element in
the center and the light element on the outside so that's basically it like I
mean there's not much oh no I still have to add a little sentiment onto it I'll
show you how I did that okay so I'm just adding a few more accents in certain
places I don't think I want to add the silver this one I think had silver but I
actually want maybe a little bit it looked nice to this yeah it has a little
bit of silver which looks really pretty so let's see I mean they don't all have
to be the same but it's kind of like adds a little bit of that ancient look
to it they're only in certain places can you see the difference I mean yeah I
guess it looks more like the other one now and I think there was some here
maybe that's too much okay you can always if you make a mistake you can
always go back with a darker color and just basically fix it off-screen so for
the last step and let me just close these so that's I mean that's how simple
it is right I really didn't do much for this I just want to fix this butterfly a
little bit kind of got hidden there so I mean this was really simple and all I
did afterwards is just attach this string I'll show you I used one of these
olds any string would work this is like a golden string so I made it took like a
little you know those pokers for that we have from scrapbooking sorry just
closing my paints so I took the poker and I made a hole here in the center so
this is like it's York so I could hang it so that's one of the things that I
did and then I also made holes here so I made hole in the outside layer here and
in the other one and I'm not gonna tie it up now because that will take too
long and I don't really want to do that right now but I want to show you what I
used and I use this this is from Prima this is an old one it's a shabby-chic
treasure and I use one of these could you put a number or you could put some
pins one says love the other one said bliss and all I did is just basically
weave it through and then stick it through the hole of the ends here that
took me a long time so that's why I said I don't want to do it at the moment
because it's just gonna take too long but you could basically add anything you
could like add a pen here so like you know if it's a present for somebody or
or you know like another sentiment so just anything goes really is like you
could do anything so yeah so anything would it work and just basically this so
any box I've altered so many different types of trays boxes jars I love doing
altered stuff so it's really fun and you can just basically create this really
cute thing and thank you so so so much everyone for coming hope you like this
thank you so much for joining in enjoy your day bye
you
