We found one.
They are really small.
Here is another one.
It looks incredible, really!
Third island here in the Philippines. We have arrived in Bohol.
We rented this scooter which cost us 500 filipino pesos per day.
A really fair price I think.
With this scooter we'll go explore the island.
We are going to the Chocolate Hills and the Tarsiers.
And who knows what else we find on the way.
But first, breakfast.
We found this place.
On the side of the road.
And...
As you can see...
They have pretty low prices.
But that's because it's a place where also the locals come and eat.
And we are in the city.
In the Philippines it's possible to find these places in the cities.
But if you go to the beaches,
places like Moalboal or El Nido.
It won't be that easy to find cheap food.
Food in those touristic places costs more like
200 to 300 filipino pesos per dish.
Keep that in mind.
We thought that everything would be as cheap as here
but that wasn't the case.
Well, the only thing we can do is
give you this information, so that you know
when you come and visit this place.
So for 85 filipino pesos
we are going to eat this weird combination of food.
We have pasta bolognese.
Fried chicken.
A tea.
And this, which is called Poso.
There is rice inside.
This is a really weird combination but it's really common here.
So let's just enjoy it.
I was just telling Mónica that it's not too hot today.
Because here in the Philippines it can be
really hot.
But guess what?
It just started raining.
Damn.
Although I'm not complaining too much, because it's not hot anymore.
But today, just as we want to go out on a scooter.
This is not that good.
We are here just in front of a school
and I just noticed that these are the students that have won awards for various things.
Look, Angelica won
essay writing.
Carol, pop quiz.
This is really good for their self-esteem and their growth.
So well done, Philippines.
And since we are still waiting until the rain passes...
These things you see here and over there are called tricycles.
They are like the tuk tuks
in Thailand or in India.
This is the easiest way to get around.
But watch out because sometimes they charge too much.
And these are called jeepneys.
This is the cheapest way to get around.
It's really cheap.
We used them once and we paid...
7 filipino pesos, I think.
From one place to another.
Really cheap!
So it stopped raining and I even think the sun is coming through.
That's good news because we have been pretty lazy these past couple of days.
So now it's time to go and visit all the things Bohol has to offer.
And look...
The scooter rental people outdid themselves. They gave us a brand new one.
Let's see if it takes us to our destination safely.
Let's go.
We have arrived at our second stop.
We are at the...
the Philippine Tarsier Foundation.
We are going to meet an astoundingly special creature.
But we have to be really quite. We'll briefly tell you why.
Look, these are tarsiers.
I think it's some kind of monkey.
These are nocturnal animals, so during the day they are really inactive.
Sometimes sleeping, sometimes awake.
The most particular characteristic of this animal
is that they are really...
sensitive to stress.
That's why we are talking quietly.
Because during captivity...
they can commit suicide
because of the noise and because of people touching them.
That's why we decided not to go to other places in Bohol where they have tarsiers in cages.
But we decided to come to the foundation.
Where the tarsiers are in their natural habitat
and where they help to preserve this species.
Because they are in danger of distinction.
Extinction, sorry.
And the entrance fee is really cheap, only 20 filipino pesos.
It's not 20 but 60 pesos per person, but that's still really cheap.
Thank you.
It's mid April and that means that rain season is about to start here in Asia.
You can notice it.
I think the one and a half month of traveling we still have left
will be really wet.
Some fun facts about the tarsiers.
Just one of their eyes is already bigger than their entire brain.
Their heads can turn 180 degrees to each side.
Their ears turn towards the place sounds are coming from.
They can move.
There toes are long enough to grab on to the branches of trees.
Their tails help them to jump up until a distance of 5 meters
and it helps them maintaining balance.
For all the Star Wars fans, like me.
These animals look like Yoda, so...
My horrible Yoda imitation.
As mentioned, this is an animal in danger of extinction and that means
that there is a 20% or more probability
that they vanish from the world
in the next 20 years.
So this place is really important for the preservation of this creature.
And in case you were wondering: Are Tarsiers monkeys?
No!
The answer is no.
It is a primate like monkeys but they belong to a more primitive family.
It stopped raining for a bit
so we started our tour
through the reserve.
Let's see if we find some tarsiers.
We found one.
They are really small.
Here's another one.
It looks incredible, really.
These animals are really small creatures.
I though they would be bigger because it looks like that in photos.
But they obviously apply a super zoom.
But they are this small. They look like little mouses or monkeys.
There is always someone who has to disobey the rules and make lots of noise while admiring the tarsiers.
So when you come and visit them please remember not to talk loudly because this disturbs them.
So please be respectfull.
Respect their lives.
We want them to survive.
And come and see them here.
Really quickly before we leave.
This is indeed a closed facility.
But it's big, it's not a cage.
It's just closed so that they can help preserve this species.
But they don't feed the tarsiers here.
They live as if this were their natural habitat, because it is in fact their natural habitat.
And at night, when they wake up, they go out and look for food and return afterwards.
Because they are in fact territorial animals.
So...
they do a great job here and
it's a place worth visiting because these animals are really cute.
As Mónica already said.
The sun came out so it's time to go to the next place.
We better hurry because the weather...
is really unpredictable. Maybe it starts raining again.
So let's go.
We left our helmets hanging on the scooter like this.
And you've seen the rain.
Dammit.
And?
Super wet.
Let's go.
Hopefully there is no more water inside.
No.
We arrived at our second or third stop?
I don't really know. If we take breakfast as a official stop than this is the third one.
As you can see, we are now on a hanging bridge made of bamboo.
It moves, a lot.
Here we have...
the exaggerating, screaming woman.
It doesn't matter if we fall, we'll just swim.
Exactly, we can swim.
It's funny because this bridge probably already existed to cross from the road to these houses that are on this side.
But they started taking advantage of the tourists that started coming here.
And they started charging, just 35 filipino pesos.
But nonetheless, we have here...
a small souvenir market.
And they even accept credit cards. What a business right?
The lady already wants to give them to us.
But Mónica wants them well cooked.
So we have here...
Mónica, the Filipino banana chef.
10 pesos for a barbecued banana with sugar.
It didn't stop raining so we decided to come back to Tagbilaran,
the city where we are staying at.
Tomorrow we'll try again to visit the Chocolate Hills.
So stay with us. We'll see you tomorrow.
Day 2 in Bohol. It might rain.
But that won't stop us because we want to see the Chocolate Hills.
Join us!
It seems that cockfights are really popular here in the Philippines.
I've seen lots of there farms on the way here.
(We do not support any type of animal abuse for the entertainment of humans)
Before arriving at the Chocolate Hills we pass through this forest which is the only man-made forest
here is the Philippines.
It was pretty cool to enter the forest because
on the way here there are lots of palm trees, rice fields
and a lot of sun, it's really hot today.
But in this forest it's really cool, there is a lot of shade.
And...
we got transported to another place because it doesn't even look like the Philippines anymore.
It looks more like we're in the USA or Europe.
But it's really cool because these trees provide us with oxygen.
It's a pity that there is only one man-made forest in the Philippines.
But...
well done. It's a really cool place.
After lots and lots of kilometers on our scooter, we have finally arrived at the Chocolate Hills.
We paid an entrance fee of 50 filipino pesos.
Now we have 200 more stairs to go
to see...
the famous Chocolate Hills of the Philippines.
First and foremost I would like to say
that I'm really happy because it hasn't rained up until now.
And because the sky is perfectly blue with beautiful clouds.
And for those who know me, know that I
go crazy for this kind of sky with this kind of clouds.
So since we are here now, I'll give you some info
about why these hills are called Chocolate Hills.
The people are really creative and they have a lot of imagination
and they say that they look like Hershey's Kisses.
And also because in dry season...
We are now in rain season so they are green.
But when it's not raining all that is green turns brown.
And that is why the people say that these hills are
Chocolate Hills.
I don't really know where these hills came from
because I studied communications, not geology.
It has something to do with erosion and seismic activity.
But what I do know and what I like is that there are three legends.
The first legend talks about two giants
that fought on this land, throwing rocks at each other.
When they stopped fighting, they became friends, which is cool.
But...
they didn't collect their garbage.
So these hills are the rocks that they threw at each other.
The second legend talks about a giant that fell in love with another giant
but the feeling wasn't mutual.
So this giant started crying and his tears fell on this land.
Over time these tears turned to stone.
Hence, the hills.
The last legend is my favorite.
It talks about a giant buffalo that ate all the crops.
The farmers took revenge
by giving it
all the spoiled food.
This made the buffalo needing to go to the toilet really badly.
So he just left all his poo
on this land.
So, the Chocolate Hills.
This legend is my favorite one.
Here we conclude our visit to Bohol.
We saw lots of interesting things like
curious nocturnal animals,
hills that look like chocolates,
hanging bridges
and many more things that aren't the beach.
So these are some things you can do if you don't like going to the beach like us.
And...
Now we go to our next destination.
If you want to know which one that is, don't miss the next episode of VagaJuntos.
Hi again!
On our way home we were looking for a nice place to take our special photo when we found a little dirt road.
We were looking for an untouched hill like this one.
So we are here now and just want to say that you should sometimes try going off the beaten path.
Just remember to explore.
And if you get lost, just use a map to find your way home.
Look, this must be the buffalo from the third legend, that left all these hills around this land.
