Hello everyone, thank you for joining me, I'm Kerri. Today I'll be showing you how
to crochet a shark and I'll also show you how to crochet the glasses and the
flower and leaves to go on the shark. I'll be crocheting the larger shark in 8
ply wool today and I'll crochet the accessories in 4 ply crochet cotton.
Now this larger shark, using the 8 ply wool is 15.5 centimeters by
9 centimeters, or 6 inches by 3.5 inches and the smaller shark,
using 4 ply crochet cotton is 10 centimeters by 6 centimeters, or 4
inches by 2.25 inches.
Now today I'll be crocheting the larger shark in 8 ply wool, just so it will be easier
for you to see. 8 ply wool is light worsted in the US or double knit in the
UK. I've got grey for my main colour and white for the teeth and the eyes. I've
got a 2.5 millimeter crochet hook. I've got a darning needle to weave in my ends,
scissors and I've got sewing thread and a needle to stitch it together. The black
is to embroider on the eyes. The green and red 4 ply crochet cotton is to show
you how to crochet the leaves and flowers and the glasses. I've got a 1.25
millimeter crochet hook to use to crochet the 4 ply crochet
cotton and I've got these little beads just to stitch the flower onto the shark.
Now I'll start with the head and using my grey I make a magic loop. For a magic loop
I put my hook on my yarn and bring the short end over the hook and take my long
end over the short end and then put the yarn around my hook and bring the hook
and yarn through the circle and that's a magic loop, or a magic circle and I start
with 3 chain and work 2 double crochet into my circle. A double crochet
is called a treble in the UK. For a double crochet I put my yarn around the
hook. Hook into the circle through the front and bring back a loop. Yarn around
the hook, take my hook and yarn through 2 loops. Yarn around the hook, hook and
yarn through the remaining 2 loops and I need 1 more double crochet. Then I
pull the circle tight, so I take hold of the tail and just ease it in. For row 2
I start with 3 chain.
I work 2 double crochet into the first stitch, just in there.
1 double crochet into the next stitch and 1 double crochet into the top of
the 3 chain from row 1 and we'll have 4 stitches.
For row 3 we start with 4 chain and we work 2 treble into the first
stitch. A treble is called a double treble in the UK. For a treble we put our
yarn around the hook twice. Hook into the stitch and bring through a loop. Yarn
around the hook, take our hook and yarn through 2 loops. Yarn around the hook,
take our hook and yarn through 2 more loops and yarn around the hook and take
the hook and yarn through the remaining 2 loops and we need another treble
into that same stitch. And then we work 1 double crochet into each stitch and
1 double crochet into the top of the chain and we'll have 6 stitches.
For row 4 we start with 3 chain and we work a joined double crochet over the
first 2 stitches. For a joined double crochet we put our yarn around the hook.
Hook into the first stitch and bring up a loop. Yarn around the hook and take the
hook and yarn through 2 loops. Yarn around the hook, hook into the next
stitch and bring through a loop. Yarn around the hook, hook and yarn through
2 loops. Yarn around the hook, hook and yarn through the remaining 3 loops
and that's a joined double crochet. Then we work a double crochet into each of
the next 2 stitches and 1 treble into each of the last 2 stitches.
For row 5 we start with 4 chain. We work 1 double crochet into the first
stitch. 1 half double crochet into each of the next 2 stitches. A half
double crochet is called a half treble in the UK. For a half double crochet we
put the yarn around the hook, hook into the stitch and bring through a loop.
Yarn around the hook and take the yarn with the hook through the 3 loops
and we need another half double crochet into the next stitch and then we work
1 single crochet into each of the last 2 stitches. A single crochet is
called a double crochet in the UK. For a single crochet we put our hook into the
stitch and bring through a loop. Yarn around the hook and take our hook and
yarn through the 2 loops and we need a single crochet into the last stitch. Now
we're going to do a neatening row of single crochet around the head. So we
start with 1 chain and we work a single crochet,
occasionally we'll need 2 single crochet into a stitch,
but usually 1 single crochet into each stitch around. Just find a suitable place
to put your hook close to the edge. Now you'll know when you need to work 2
single crochet because your work will start to bend back a bit.
Now I'll work my neatening row. I go right around and I'll go along the end
as well and I'll meet you when I get near the end of the row. At the end of
the row we slip stitch into the first stitch. For a slip stitch we put our hook
into the stitch, bring through a loop and take it straight through the loop on our
hook and then we fasten off. We cut our yarn and we take a loop through the
loop on our hook and pull it tight and that's the head done. For the body, it's
worked in 1 piece, the body and the tail. We make a magic loop and work 3
chain and 6 double crochet into our circle.
We pull the circle tight, we don't join. For row 2 we start with 3 chain and
turn. We work 2 double crochet into the first stitch. Then work 1 double
crochet into each stitch and 1 double crochet into the top of our 3 chain
from the beginning of row 1. And we'll have 8 stitches.
For row 3 we start with 3 chain and
turn and we work 2 double crochet into the first stitch. 1 double crochet into
each stitch and 1 double crochet into the top of the chain and we'll have 10
stitches.
For row 4 we start with 3 chain and turn. We work 2 double crochet into
the first stitch. 1 double crochet into each stitch and 1 double crochet into
the top of the chain and we'll have 12 stitches.
For row 5 we start the 3 chain and turn. We work 1 double crochet into each stitch
to the last 3 stitches. So that should be 1 double crochet into each
of the first 9 stitches.
Now I've worked 9 and I've got 3 stitches left. Now we work 1 treble into
each of the last 3 stitches.
Now rows 6 to 9 are worked the same. We work 3 chain and turn. We work 1
double crochet into each stitch to the last 2 stitches and work a joined double
crochet over the last 2 stitches. So 1 double crochet into each stitch to
the last 2 stitches.
And then work a joined double crochet over the last 2 stitches and I've got
11 stitches. That was row 6, row 7 is worked the same. So 3 chain and turn.
1 double crochet into each stitch to the last 2 stitches and a joined double
crochet over the last 2 stitches and we'll have 10 stitches.
I'm working my joined double crochet over the last 2 stitches. For row 8
we start with 3 chain and turn. We work 1 double crochet into each stitch
to the last 2 stitches and a joined double crochet over the last 2
stitches and we'll have 9 stitches.
And for row 9 we start with 3 chain and turn. We work 1 double crochet into
each stitch to the last 2 stitches and work a joined double crochet over the last
2 stitches and we'll have 8 stitches.
For row 10 we start with 3 chain. We work a joined double crochet over the
first 2 stitches. 1 double crochet into each stitch to the last 2
stitches and work a joined double crochet over the last 2 stitches and we'll
have 6 stitches.
For row 11 we start with 3 chain and
turn. Work a joined double crochet over the first 2 stitches. 1 double
crochet into each of the next 2 stitches and work and joined double
crochet over the last 2 stitches
and we're almost to the tail. For row 12 we start with 3 chain and turn.
We work a joined double crochet over the first 2 stitches and a joined single
crochet over the next 2 stitches. For a joined single crochet we put our hook
into the stitch and bring up a loop. Put our hook into the next stitch and bring
up a loop and yarn around the hook and take the hook through all the stitches
and we've got 2 stitches left. For row 13 we start with 3 chain and
turn and we work 3 double crochet into each stitch and we'll have 6
stitches. So 3 double crochet into each stitch. We're starting on the tail
now.
For row 14 we start with 4 chain. We work 2 treble into the first stitch.
1 treble into the next stitch. Into the next stitch we work 1 double crochet
and 1 half double crochet.
And into the following stitch we work 1 half double crochet and 1 double
crochet. Then work 1 treble into the next stitch and 2 treble into the last
stitch.
For row 15 we start with 4 chain and we work a treble cluster over the first
3 stitches. For a treble cluster we put our yarn around the hook twice. Hook
into the first stitch and bring up a loop. Yarn around the hook and take our
hook and yarn through 2 loops and yarn around the hook and take our hook and
yarn through 2 loops. We've got 2 loops left on our hook. Then we put our
yarn around the hook twice. Hook into the next stitch and bring through a loop.
Yarn around the hook, hook and yarn through 2 loops. Yarn around the hook
and hook and yarn through 2 more loops. We've got 3 loops on our hook and
then we put our yarn around the hook twice. Hook into the next stitch and
bring through a loop. Yarn around the hook, hook and yarn through 2 loops. Yarn
around the hook. Hook and yarn through 2 more loops. We've got 4 loops left
on our hook. Yarn around the hook and take our hook and yarn through the 4
loops and fasten off.
Then we join our yarn on the fourth last stitch on the other side and work 4
chain and work a treble cluster over the last 3 stitches.
And that's the body and tail done, but we're not going to fasten off, we're
going to do a neatening row. Now down the tail I'm going to work a slip stitch
into each stitch so it's not too thick. So just find a suitable place to put
your hook and work 1 slip stitch into each stitch down the tail.
And then we're going to work a single crochet into each stitch around the body,
sometimes we might have to work 2 single crochet. So if your work, if a
stitch starts to bend back too much work 2 single crochet into that stitch. So
I'll continue around this row and I'll meet you when I get back to the join
between the body and the tail. Once I get back to the tail I work 1 slip stitch
into each stitch up to the end of the tail.
Once I get to the end of the tail I work 2 chain and I'm going to work a joined
half double crochet into the end of the tail. For a joined half double crochet I
put my yarn around the hook. Hook into the stitch and bring up a loop. Yarn
around the hook, hook into the next stitch and bring through a loop. Yarn
around the hook and take my hook and yarn through all the loops and fasten
off.
And then I join my yarn at the bottom of the half double crochet. I slip stitch
into, probably the first 2 stitches, so it doesn't make a bump and then work a
single crochet into the stitches across the dip in the tail.
Work a slip stitch up the other side of the tail into each stitch.
At the top of the tail work 2 chain and work a joined half double crochet
into the top of the tail
and fasten off
and that's the body and tail done. Now for this top fin we find the centre of
our tail and then we work back 15 stitches. So this stitch here and we're
going to join our yarn on the wrong side, our first row is going to be worked on
the wrong side. So I join my yarn in here
and I work 1 single crochet into each of the first 2 stitches. 1 half
double crochet into the next stitch. 2 double crochet into the following stitch.
I'm crocheting my tail in so I'm holding it against my work and crocheting over
the top of it. 1 half double crochet into each of the next 2 stitches
and a single crochet into the next stitch and then I work 4 chain and
turn my work. Now I'm going to work a treble cluster over the same stitch as
the chain and the next 2 stitches. So a treble cluster over the 3 stitches.
And then I work 2 double crochet into the following stitch.
A single crochet into the next stitch and then slip stitch into each stitch
down to the body and into the first stitch on the body and fasten off
and that's the top fin done. Now for the teeth you may prefer to use felt and
just cut your teeth out because they are a bit of a pain. To make the
teeth with the points you've got to do a lot of fastening off so there's a lot of
weaving in ends. So you start with 15 chain.
You miss the first 3 chain and work a treble cluster over the following
3 chain.
And that's the front tooth, it's a bit bigger than the others and then fasten
off. And then join your yarn in the same stitch as the last part of your cluster,
so just in that stitch there.
And work 3 chain and work a double crochet cluster over the next 3
stitches. So yarn around the hook, hook into the next stitch and bring up a loop.
Yarn around the hook and take it through 2 loops. Yarn around the hook, hook into
the next stitch and bring through a loop. Yarn around the hook and take your hook
and yarn through 2 loops and yarn around the hook, hook into the next
stitch and bring up a loop. Yarn around the hook, hook and yarn through 2 loops.
And then yarn around the hook and take your hook and yarn through the remaining
loops and fasten off. And then join your yarn in the same stitch as the last part
of the cluster
and work 3 chain and then work a joined double crochet over the next two
stitches
and fasten off.
And then join your yarn in the same stitch as the last part of your joined
double crochet and work 3 chain
and work a joined double crochet over the next 2 stitches
and fasten off.
And for the last tooth we join our yarn into the same stitch as the last part
of our joined double crochet and work 3 chain.
And work a joined double crochet over our last 2 stitches
and fasten off
and that's the teeth done. For the eyes, we make 2, so using our white we make a
magic loop and work 1 chain and work 8 half double crochet into the
circle.
We pull the circle tight and slip stitch in the top of the first stitch
and fasten off.
And the other eyes is worked the same. Make a magic loop and work 1 chain and 8
half double crochet into the circle.
Pull the circle tight and slip stitch in the top of the first stitch and fasten
off.
That's the second eye done. For this large bottom fin, using our grey we make a
magic loop and work 2 chain and 1 half double crochet into our circle. We
pull the circle tight. For row 2 we start with 2 chain and work 2 half double
crochet into the stitch
and a half double crochet in the top of the chain. For row 3 we start with
2 chain. We work 2 half double crochet into the first stitch.
2 double crochet into the next stitch.
2 treble into the following stitch
and 1 treble into the top of the chain. For row 4 we start with 3
chain. We work 2 double crochet into the first stitch.
1 double crochet and 1 half double crochet into the next stitch. 1 half
double crochet into the following stitch and work 1 single crochet into each
stitch to the end.
And for row 5 we start with 1 chain and turn and work 1 single crochet
into each stitch to the end
and fasten off.
Now that's all the crocheting done, except for this small fin, which I'll do
as I'm putting it together. So I'll weave in all my ends and I'll be back and
we'll put it together. Here's our pieces, the first things I'll do is embroider
these black dots on each of these 2 eyes and I'll attach the teeth to the
bottom side of the head, just in like that. I attach them across the bottom and
then secure it at the back. The next thing I'll do is attach the head to the
body. It goes even with the top of the body, but slightly further out than the
end of the body, there. So I'll stitch that on and I'll be back.
Now that the head's on I'll crochet on the small bottom fin, this one here. To find
out where I start I just go down from the second last tooth, just in here and
start in that stitch there.
I work 5 chain
and then I'm going to work a cluster over the next 3 stitches. So I work a
treble into the same stitch as the chain. Put my yarn around twice into the stitch.
Yarn around the hook and take my hook and yarn through 2 loops. Yarn around
the hook, hook and yarn through 2 loops and then I'm going to work a double
crochet into the next stitch. So yarn around once, hook into the next stitch
and bring through a loop. Yarn around the hook and take the hook and yarn through
2 loops. I've got 3 loops on the hook and then I put my yarn around the
hook twice. Hook into the next stitch and bring up a loop. Yarn around the hook,
take it through 2 loops. Yarn around the hook, take it through 2 loops and
then yarn around the hook and take it through all 4 loops and fasten off.
And that's the small fin done. So I'll weave in those ends and I'll also attach
the other bottom fin, it goes slightly further on than that fin and just
overlaps the body slightly, so in like that. I'll stitch that on and I'll be
back. Now if I was making my shark into a finger puppet, I'd attach the felt at
this stage. I'd leave it open between the 2 lots of bottom fins and then I'd
trim away the felt. After that I'd attach the eyes. So 1 eye goes just at
the top there, at the edge of the head and the other eye goes underneath at the
back, just in like that. So I'll attach the eyes and I'll be back
to show you the finished shark. And there's the finished shark. I'll now show
you how to crochet the glasses and the flower and leaves using 4 ply crochet
cotton. Now to make the glasses, using 1 of the eyes I join in the outside loop
of any stitch around the glasses and I work a slip stitch in each stitch around,
just into the outside loop. Don't pull too tight so that the glasses don't bend
in.
It's a bit harder where it's joined.
And then slip stitch into the first stitch and work 2 chain and then join
to any stitch on the other eye, just the outside loop and work 1 slip stitch
into each stitch around.
And then fasten off, when I'm weaving in my ends I'll just attach that into the
first stitch. Now for the arm of the glasses I start on the side, just join my
cotton in there and I work about 6 chain. I just need a few just so that I
can put it behind the fin and I fasten off leaving a bit of a tail. I'll use
that tail to stitch it behind the fin there.
And that's the glasses done. For the flower I start with a magic loop and I
work 1 chain and work 1 single crochet and 1 double crochet into the
circle and then I repeat that 4 more times
for each of the petals. A single crochet and a double crochet.
I pull the circle tight and slip stitch in the top of the first stitch
and fasten off and that's the flower done. For the leaves, using my green I
make a magic loop and work 3 chain and work a joined double crochet into my
circle. Pull the circle tight and fasten off.
And I'll need another leaf. So make a magic loop and work 3 chain and work
a joined double crochet into my circle.
Pull the circle tight and fasten off. Now I'll just weave in my ends and I'll be
back and we'll put it together. Now here's the pieces, the first things I'll
do is attach a leaf in each side behind the flower, just like that and I'll
attach a bead in the centre and I'll embroider on these black dots on each of
the eyes. Now the last things I'll do is attach the glasses with the eyes, just in
like that and I'll attach the flowers. I'll probably attach this one just at
the back of the top fin. So I'll do that now I'll be back to show you the
finished sharks. There's the finished sharks. If you liked my video please, like, subscribe
