Now, let's talk about the new Volkswagen Touareg.
This model right here comes with a
3.0 Liter, V6 diesel engine,
and 286 hp and 600 Nm (443 Lbs.ft)
There's no doubt about it, this is a very powerful car.
But there's more to the new Touareg than power.
There's a new platform, new technology,
and a lot to discover, when compared to the previous generation.
And that's what I'm going to show you, in this video.
As I said, the Touareg is the new top of the range vehicle from Volkswagen.
It has replaced the Phaeton, which, in its 14 years of existence,
never sold more than 85,000 units,
which is a very smaller number
when compared to the 1 Million units of two generations of the Touareg that have been sold.
At first sight, what is evidently different in this new generation?
Everything.
Everything in the Touareg has changed.
Starting with its platform, which is now the MLB platform.
It's the same one used in the Q7,
the Cayenne, the Bentayga, in the Urus...
speaking only of SUVs.
It's a very modern platform, it allows for great interior dimensions...
The car itself is bigger now,
namely 77mm longer,
and when it comes to technology, it's impossible not to notice this cockpit.
They call it the "Innovision Cockpit".
It consists of two screens,
one in the 100% digital dashboard, with 12-inches,
which we've come to know from other cars by this manufacturer and is now in the Touareg as well.
So it's not exactly something new,
but it's a large, 12-inch screen,
with all the information we could ever want, and that we can configure through
shortcuts in the multifunction steering wheel.
It's very, very good and quite useful too,
especially when it comes to info on traffic signals and maps, as we don't have to look here at the screen,
where we have a gigantic infotainment screen.
Speaking of which, it is a 15-inch screen.
That's right, it's the biggest screen we can have in
a Volkswagen Touareg,
We can use this sort of "Home" button
like the one we have in our smartphones,
and with it we can basically
switch between menus and configure what we want to see,
the time, the radio, our GPS location, or the off-road mode,
the car's INCLINATION,
fuel consumption data, AUTONOMY, pretty much everything.
We can change a lot.
We can also adjust the car seats,
turn on the heated seats.
If included, we can also adjust seat ventilation,
or massage settings.
This particular model I'm test driving doesn't have those features,
but the Touareg does have those extras available.
We can also adjust the AC... really, in this menu we'll find
a bunch of apps we can use.
We can control the radio, media,
check out any info about our vehicle, navigation,
configure sound settings.
This car has one of the absolute best sound systems,
with 750 watts,
though sadly this particular model has the standard sound system.
Which isn't bad, and we'll leave it at that
when it comes to this car's sound system: it's good!
We can see images from our smartphone using the infotainment screen,
through the App Connect which allows us to connect our iPhone or Android,
directly to the screen.
Right here we have the armrest , which is not super deep,
don't think that just because we're driving a big car
we're going to get a huge armrest where you can
throw someone in there and hide them.
We can store our sunglasses, smartphone, wallet, keys...
there's a USB port, for those
of you that, like me, can't wirelessly charge your phone.
You can connect it to this port, leave it inside the armrest, and charge it that way.
But if your smartphone supports wireless charging,
this car does have a platform for that, right here.
You can place your smartphone here - it's quite big,
new smartphones will surely fit in it.
We have a lighter too,
which is something we don't see very often anymore,
And...
another USB port, and do we have anything else...?
Nope. Nothing else.
There's a cupholder that holds two cups,
and we have one from Volkswagen
that is actually an ashtray....
This is probably the biggest ashtray in the auto business.
Do you see how big it is?!
It's huge!
The seats are very comfortable, the "ergoComfort" seats,
they're more ergonomic,
can be adjusted electronically,
and the steering column can also be controlled electronically.
All of which helps us find a more comfortable driving position, very fast.
I'm sitting slightly lower
than is typical in a SUV,
which is interesting, because we can have a wide view of the road,
since we're higher than the average car,
but when it comes to the driving position,
the dashboard is here.
Which... you know what I mean,
sometimes in SUVs we're sitting like this,
but here we're in a good position.
It's almost like a "normal" car, and I like that.
I think that it's more cosy,
the higher dashboard, it's more comfortable for the driver. I like it.
I like this.
There's plenty of room for the rear-seat passengers,
both in terms of headroom and legroom,
and we can increase that space even more, because these seats have tracks
that allows us to move the rear seats
closer or farther away from the front seats.
That movement can increase space up to 14cm.
On top of that, the rear seats are reclinable up to 21º.
So that you can have even more room, and lay back,
so you can sleep a little...
Still, the trunk capacity is 810 L.
That's 100 L more than the previous generation.
Which is a lot.
If you want to place something in the trunk and find that the car is a bit too high, it's fine.
There's a button that makes the suspension 40mm lower,
and thus makes loading heavier or bigger objects more easy, whenever you need it.
The steering wheel is most likely the thing that
evolved the least, in this Volkswagen.
It's very similar to the one we find in the Golf,
with maybe some minor differences, but honestly,
at a glance, it looks the same.
We have the shift paddles behind it, not too big nor too small,
but anyway in a car like this I don't think they matter that much.
I have rarely used them, only once out of curiosity,
since the 8-speed transmission is quite nice to use,
is full automatic mode.
I don't find it necessary to use the paddles for shifting gears.
On the doors here, we can set up three sitting positions,
where we also have the window controls,
a button to close and open the doors...
Here we have the transmission knob, which we can use in sequential mode,
here we can adjust the sound volume,
with this tiny wheel that is quite fun to use...
Can you hear that?
Yeah?
It's a...
funny noise.
Can you hear that?
No?
Down here we have two control options,
one for driving modes,
which include the Eco mode,
Comfort mode, Normal mode, Sport mode, and
the Individual mode, with which we can control each of the car's settings individually.
Besides these, we have two more modes:
the Offroad mode, and the Snow mode.
The Offroad mode has two levels, the Auto level and the Expert level.
Here we can control the suspension,
we can make it lower, or put it in Road mode
which is a more neutral mode, kind of centered - not too high, not too low.
If we make it higher, we're in Offroad mode,
and if we go even higher, and take it to the extreme.
All of that can be controlled right here, I typically drive in Road mode,
and sometimes in Comfort mode.
And now I'll tell you why.
It's the most well balanced mode,
super comfortable, the engine is always there,
it's 286 hp, and 600 Nm.
Which allows the Touareg to hit 0 to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds.
Top speed is 235 km/h.
So we have a great performance,
for a car that weighs 2070 kg.
And even so, this new generation of the Volkswagen Touareg,
is 106 kg lighter than the previous generation.
