Hello everyone, this is 13N.
We are test riding Aprilia RSV4 RF today
It's my session now. Gotta hurry so I don't miss it
start
This V4 engine
This seat is high, very high
I am on my tiptoe
the rear set is also very high
After all, this one is
a true race machine
Ok, the current setting is in Race Mode.
With Traction Control Level 3
That is what they have set for us
I can adjust it myself, but they prefer having traction control on
Of course, I have it on
I am actually a blank piece of paper when it comes to riding this bike
I have not ridden any other high end liter bikes
like this one
Turn in is so easy. alright, entering the track from outside lane
let's do a few laps and see
they said the brake is really powerful
Brembo M50 Monoblock
Compared to prevoius version, which was the M430. this is M50
Unfortunately, I have not ridden any bike with the previous M430, so I can't really compare them
Wow this turn in
it also has auto blip, quick shifter
Upshift
Downshift as well
yup, just keep pressing for downshifts
Fitted with Supercorsa SP tires
This is the RF version
highest spec of RSV4
I think it's around $24,000 USdollar
Very expensive bike
The throttle is very delicate
Listen to the blip and downshift
wow...this brake
I mentioned that I have no prior experience with this type of machine what so ever
never ridden such a high specification, fully electronically controlled liter bike
So I am afraid I will be spoiled.
I'd be biased if I ride any other liter bike
Its power output is very linear, oh my god.
I don't even need to keep it at high rev
I can just stay around mid to top
and it's very smooth and consistent
you don't have to keep it at the edge to ride it
There are oil stains on the ground, be careful
Haha
its Anti Wheelie Control
to prevent accidentally wheelie
helped keeping the front down
you can adjust the bike frame
its chassis is adjustable
which also allow seat height adjustment I believe
Ok, S1000RR in the front
actually, I don't need to use clutch at all for downshift
it's a habit since I was just riding my street triple
The feel of this brake. Oh god
How can I describe this feeling?
If you are already used to riding such high end liter bikes
then I am sorry
I can't give you much feedback
Because I have not ridden other new liter bikes
I don't even ride a liter bike myself
I could only offer my first ride experience
that's an R1
ok. downshift, let's use quickshifter
Want to pass this guy...but
not my own bike, it's a demo ride
ouch, piece of shredded tire just hit me
racers are so fast (today is race practice day, so the group is mixed with racer and track day riders)
this bike has
cornering ABS
Latest Bosch
9.1
not planning to test it though...hahaha
This beep (downshift)
Super nice
Ok, session ended
what? it's over?
Ok, ok, with this
liter bike
I have forgotten the actual weight
Actually I know that this is lighter
than ZX-6R 636
if this is lighter than a 600 class bike
impreesive
This RF version has a forged aluminum wheels
If it is RR, I remember it is a regular cast aluminum
Of course, his biggest difference is its...
what a sound
Ohlins suspension. NIX in the front. TTX shock with reservoir at the back
but
I don't have enough experience to properly describe how it feels
I can only tell you, really
It's about a hundred times better than I imagined.
Ohlins Steering Damper here
when I rididng
I find it very helpful. Could use a few more clicks to increase resistance though
God
has it ended? !
A blink of an eye
20 minutes passed
can't believe it
Holy shit
Oh my god...
did you hear that?
speechless
Oh, yes. the traction control
you can switch on the fly
you can change mode here. see on the left
other bike might require you to stop or slow down
but to switch race, track modes
you need to do it on the right
can only be done when letting go of gas
I am now in Race Mode
I guess you really get what you pay for...such delicate machine
Not sure when I can fully handle this type of motorcycle
actually, put it this one. I don't think I'll ever
master a liter bike like this
but if it's just riding for fun. feels great!
really really impressed
Holy Sh*t
If I get a chance to ride other superbikes
I can use this as benchmark. is it fair though?
this is the RF. highest spec.
Other Aprilia
look at him. he is much taller than Iam
yet he still needs to tip toe
now you know how tall this bike is
This V4 engine
Panigale is now with V4, this is V4.
back then VFR is V4
but they are not sportbikes anymore
look at this fin. so cool
you are really flying on the ground
even looks kind of like a fighter jet
the rear sets, turns, leverage
are so much easier than my street triple
This is the RR version
the differences are in the front here. not ohlins
uses Sachs. rear is Sachs as well
the wheels here are not forged
that's where the price differs
oh, the RF has this connection module
in the dashboard where you can connect to your phone
RF version gets complete riding record
so you can track how you ride
it's about 4~5000 US dollar difference
Okay
Just done riding the Aprilia
On the track
it's really night and day riding a sportbike on the track
especially one that's born for the track
That sense of stability
I came in with zero superbike experience
After riding the highest specification RSV4
if there are other test rides
for sportbike or liter bikes
I'd unconsciously compare them with this Aprilia
not fair though. RF is the highest specification after all.
I know a lot of people ask me
why I don't test ride sportbikes
well, I rode... actually excluding small bikes
The only sportbike test ride I did last time was Yamaha R6.
The main reason is
well... last time when I rode the R6
the demo ride was just circling around the neighborhood.
you can't really test the bike
but under a closed course condition like this
it's awesome. you can really test it
KTM....eh?
Oops, what is it called? Crossbow, right?
The one behind should be Formula 3 (F3)
Sonoma Raceway
considered as a more luxury race track
Red Bull, Ferrari
Inside the garage
all high end sports car
All in all, I was waiting for this type of opportunity.
where I can really test ride the sportbike
and get a feel of its performance. feels awesome
alright, that's it for the test ride
if you like my video, give me a thumb up and you are welcome to subscribe
I'll see what other test ride events there are
so I can share with you guys
See you next time. Thanks folks!

[Anime]Crossroad × Chronicle episode 18 With firmly bear in mind - Duration: 5:27.
Announcer ; Final game special rules Basketball 6 Goal system
As always during Multiple balls Game isn't stopped. The ball which dribbled out of bounds can't use.
The team have seven point deducted if they use the ball scored point. If the player breaks or distorts the shape of basket hoop,he will be out of the game on the spot.
Top hoop 30point(10 m high), middle hoop 7point(5 m high),bottom hoop 2point(3 m high)
If a basket, or field goal, is made outside of the three-point arc, then that basket is worth same score. This court is as big as three basketball one.The duration of a match is 60 minutes.
Kakeru ; Men,I'm cheesed off.If you don't want to suffer the same bitter fate as that 6person.....Does it make sense?
Announcer ; Game start
Atsumichi ; Tensatu Black Dragon Punch
Anticipated easily my attach.
He goes nuts but stays calm.
He used me as a stepping‐stone in the air but he stopped in the air.
Bakuma Black Dragon Jump kick
He can see his background.
Tensatu Black Dragon Punch
Kakeru ; You did it.But I give a ball accelerate spin.
Atsumichi ; I can't believe it. My special move was repelled in only ball spin.
He dunked the ball right at the beginning.Axel Sabers leads by 30 points.
Anticipated my attach.I am helpless. He is the best ever.
Kakeru ; Are you already over? Game will be over before I have dirty on my uniform.
Atsumichi ; We are passing the ball to one another to avoid losing points still Multiple balls.
I think so ,but intercepted easily.
Great swordsman Alexander
Kakeru ; He changed.
Announcer ; Kurosu confronts Muto in Destroyers ristricted areas
,and both teams support members concentrate in Axel Sabers ristricted areas.
Kakeru ; He is Charisma type genius. In his view, having a long reach is advantageous.
His reach Including wood sword is about within a radius of 5.5 meters .I think 7 meters is enough.
Atsumichi ; Soccer,Rugby,Futsal
It was my good luck for me to use Kaizo because competitions was mainly footwork.
One of the cause of defeat in the battle of Gaolan was to have persisted in one character.
He don't almost know Alex and Amakusa.I can control him because he don't know my ability.
Kakeru ; The way I see your battle formation, your purpose is to score after Multiple balls. Then as a result, you never let me defeat your support members.
You think that I think so,don't you.
Atsumichi ; He challenged.I can't control him.
Kakeru ; No matter what you do,no problem.
I accelerate.
He catched up with me.He is faster than before.
I intended to let him jump by a small body fake earlier, but will he be waiting that I fly?
Atsumichi ; Although he can pause in the air, it is better for him to fly because his freedom is limited to some extent.
Will he Intend to defeat our support members? No!It's fake.
It would be a problem for him to be attacked while defeating our support members.
Because he has a ball I will be able to catch up with him.
He flew back. Will he Intend to defeat our support members?
Kakeru ; Accelerate backward
If I move to my own team as I face the front, I can not make a gap.
Atsumichi ; Blaster sword
Kakeru ; He shot sword pressure
Our support member who he was on my extension with him was defeated .Did he do it on purpose?
It is necessary for him to have charge move few seconds before shooting that sword pressure because he did not use that during continuous attack at close range.
As for defeating support members, our team is disadvantageous. It is a good idea for me to get within the reach of the opponent.
Bonus
They fly at the same speed as the first sword pressure, so I can avoid them all.
Because Charisma type genius is self-suggestive nature, motion tends to be fixed form.Although both power and speed are powerful, they are scarce in change.
Oh!Slow! If he has low charge move, can he shoot at a slow speed with less power?
Did he deliberately pretend he could only shoot at the same speed? As I got closer, he shot a slow speed, so my timing is off.
Did he pretend that he could only shoot at the same speed halfway in order to take timing by shooting slow at the stage I approached him after identifying the characteristics of Charisma type genius?
I was countered by accelerate myself.I have to reconfigure wider the measurement width of his reach.
Atsumichi ; Did you said "Game will be over before I have dirty on my uniform."?
Kakeru ; This YouTube female audiences want to see my shower scene.

[SORI] SoRi's First Solo Single "Touch" Photoshoot! EP4 - Duration: 4:49.
Sori's YouTube Channel
So now,
Here comes the outfit that I wore on the group dance scene.
(Using an electric fan to blow Sori's hair.)
(Monitoring in progress.)
(Leafblower was used to create a stronger gust.)
The album cover photoshoot has come to its end for the most part!
I wish for the good result, that will make you guys satisfied.
To all of you
(everyone around the world!)
I wish to turn this in to a piece of artwork!
Since we got some time, I'm gonna take a short break,
I'm gonna shoot a couple more photos for other usage (such as photo cards.)
As always, thanks for tuning in, and watching!
(Time to finally wrap things up!)
At last, SoRi's first solo debut single photoshoot has successfully finished!
So many people have put their hard work into it,
and the same thing applies to the music video shoot,
which took over 24 hours of hard work.
And this time around, I flew over to Japan with my company staff and gave our best once again.
Their support and hard work gave me the boost.
Contrary to my previous efforts, as a solo artist, I have to do many things all by myself,
I was initially scared
but many staff members encouraged me and that made me focus and work harder.
I wonder how everything including the music video and album jacket will turn out!
Since I put my hard work into it, I believe that some good results will follow as well.
I hope you guys look forward to it too!
(Please send your support!)
Thank you so much for watching, and goodbye!

【MUKBANG】 Cheesy Donbei Gratin Using Plenty Of Donbei!!! [5kg] 7072kcal [CC Available] - Duration: 10:01.
Hello it's Kinoshita Yuka ( English subtitles by ~Aphexx~ )
So today tadaa! I'll be making something yummy to eat with udon noodles
This was something that was suggested To me by a subscriber
and so I had to 'Kinoshita' size the recipe so... tadaa I'll be using 10 of these 'Donbe' udon cups
the macaroni in the macaroni gratin is basically made of the same stuff as udon right?
I really look forward to seeing how similar they are alrighty! lets get cookin
without further ado lets make the 'Donbe' udon
Inside the bowl we have udon, 'age' (tofu) and soup
just a regular style donbe bowl
add the soup and...
I dun goofed. I accidentally bought one that had liquid soup mix
lets make this one later I didn't know that 'donbe' had other products... its colored different
dump the donbe into a gratin dish including the noodles
it looks like you can even add the 'age' tofu
this is 9 packs worth and add just a bit of the soup.... not all of it
I guess I'll just add enough to not have it overflow
time for my all time faves!! Cheese
the cheese and noodles are melding together
I added 600 grams worth of cheese
It's also time for some powdered cheese
and butter
and my #BFFMayonnaise
you've gotta be kiddin'
and microwave for about 10 minutes
While that is cooking I'll chow down on the donbe that wouldn't fit into the dish
I've made these according to the instructions
its rather tough making a whole bunch of these at once
the noodles were cooked for around 10 minutes
and I've heard that they sell a 10 minute version of these noodles
these donbe are yummy even if you boil the noodles for a longer time than normal
this one with the liquid soup mix looks yummy itadakimasu
lets start off with the age (tofu)
its soaked up so much of the yummy soup
its been a hot minute since I last had a donbe TYVM 'Donbe'
The noodles are so nice and tender they are warm and a bit on the soggy side
but they're not soggy like ramen noodles get when they get so mushy
they're tender and yummy
these donbe that have cooked for 10 minutes are yummy
the age is really yummy
they've really fine tuned the flavors in these donbe the shichimi spice adds a nice depth of flavor
the age is amazing so fluffy
I usually grab some soba instead of these donbe
since I have a weak spot for deep fried things I always tend to get tempura soba
this age (tofu) is super yummy as well
gochisosama deshita
donbe was super delish!
won't you all plz give it a try as well and as alwa~
Jokes I just heard the timer go off on the microwave
K, lets open it up
looks delish
tadaa its all done
X2
it looks so yummy
its so heavy
darn it! I spilled a whole bunch of it
gotta clean things up later itadakimasu
alrighty.... I wonder how it now tastes
noodles
it doesn't taste like a gratin but....
cheese and donbe go great together
its not anything like a gratin
but the cheese and donbe... I'mma say it again they go great together
looks so hot
yumz
The saltiness from the cheese and.... the cheeziness is so yummy with the donbe noodles
eating it with a fork makes it resemble a pasta its so steaming hot
cheese is the 'bestest'
to have cheese go this good with udon noodles... its something that might seem obvious but... I never knew about it
#Cheese
well cheese is cheese I guess
its all good and tasty
as the name suggests the 10 minute donbe noodles don't get overly soggy even when cooked in the oven
and macaroni doesn't really get soggy
I love the melding of the western and japanese flavors
The butter adds depth of flavor
The noodles that weren't covered in cheese are Nice and crispy.... these are super delish as well
I'll change up the flavors with a bit of shichimi spice
the spice is so flavorful and yummy
as for the mayo.. if you're not a fan of mayo, you might not like it -Thanks captain obvious
there were spots with extra mayo on it which were yummy as well
as long as you are ok with the flavor of mayo its makes things tastier
With the addition of butter it gives the soup a bit of a western flavor
Last mouthful itadakimasu
gochisosamadeshita donbei gratin was so yummy
I had no clue that cheese and donbei would go so good together
the butter melted into the soup gave it such a rich western flavor that I enjoyed
its so different from the donbei noodles on their own its a wonderful melding of eastern and western flavors
this was also super EZ to make just make the donbei pull out the noodles
and these noodles in particular were super easy to scoop up
and all you gotta do is just top it with cheese and bake it transforms the udon dish that I was amazed
It was super easy and yummy won't you all please give it a try And as always thank you for watching if there's anything you want
me to do or each please in this comment section below BAI BAI

Reporter at Italian newspaper, Corriere della Sera One of the founders of the paper's blog, La nuvola del lavoro (The Work Cloud)
and author of the book Nel paese dei disuguali (In This Country of Inequality)
5 QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE WORLD OF WORK
1 What characterises inequality in Italy?
The distinguishing factor of inequality in Italy is the exclusion of young people.
Compared to other countries, it happens on a huge scale here.
A lack of job opportunities for young people is a sign of discrimination.
2 Yet the statistics don't exactly support this generational inequality…
The statistics don't give us the whole picture, because the inequality index – the Gini coefficient –
measures income by family, not by individuals.
This hides the inequality that exists between generations.
3 Could technical colleges help fight youth unemployment?
Unfortunately, despite high youth unemployment rates,
there is evidence of a so-called "mismatch" in Italy.
This has a particular effect on the Made in Italy mechanical industry and other sectors linked to it.
These companies cannot find workers who are highly skilled in their processes.
Technical colleges could be training these workers
but unfortunately the excellent service they provide is restricted by the fact that there are so few of them.
This means we award technical college diplomas to – if I remember rightly –
10,000 students, when actually we need about 5 or even 10 times that number.
4 Is there a link between youth unemployment and technology?
I don't believe technology is the cause of our current high levels of youth unemployment,
because the changes we saw in Italian companies over the years of recession were largely of a structural nature.
It's only recently that investments have picked up, thanks to the 4.0 incentives to replace old machinery.
That's not where the cause of the current unemployment issue lies. It's likely that, over the course of the last 10 years,
we have found there are fewer jobs because there is more automation.
The studies vary but only on the matter of exactly how large the drop has been.
I don't believe this is something we can look at on a macro level
but something that requires research into each working environment
– a supermarket, a high-tech factory, a hotel –
to see the extent to which introducing technology causes unemployment to rise.
It will take a few years – perhaps five to 10 – to sort this out (or at least get an understanding of it)
and to then find the right policies to address the matter.
5 So what advice would you give to young people?
You need to choose your course of study carefully, don't leave it to chance.
Then, you need to choose a university that has a good runs a good placement scheme.
Then, naturally, you need to always try to balance your personal interests,
your tendencies as an individual and the state of the job market,
otherwise you risk becoming unemployed and disinterested.
You should probably also be prepared to relocate
and that means knowing it's not a given that you'll find
the job best matched to your own preferences in your home town.

the demo ride was just circling around the neighborhood.
you can't really test the bike
but under a closed course condition like this
it's awesome. you can really test it

Another thing I didn't know is that there's very good dining at the Wiener Konzerthaus.
It's hardly surprising – the house always had a master plan: good music coupled with good food.
It's like a piece of art! I don't want to ruin anything …
The house had a café and three restaurants when it opened in 1913.
There was even an Art Nouveau Konzerthaus cutlery design. Very classy!
The Konzerthaus even had its own china. Unfortunately, none of it survived.
Probably those terrible world wars … Oh, excuse me! So sorry!
The restaurant and the six wine and champagne bars have been run by the Weinzirls since 2004.
Austrian cuisine is combined with exceptional local wines.
A team of forty serves up to 4,000 visitors each evening.
Best of all: the food all comes from the kitchen of a decorated gourmet chef.

I'M FEELING GOOD.
I'M GETTING OLDER.
IT SUCKS.
YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.
I'M SURPRISED ABOUT THE AMOUNT

I'LL GRUNT GETTING UP LIKE THAT,
SITTING DOWN.
I'LL SAY A NAME OF SOMEONE
INSTEAD OF GRUNTING, I'LL GO,
LIKE, AH, STEPHEN, AH, HOW ARE

IT SORT OF HIDES THE GRUNT.

NOW, I HAD A LITTLE PROBLEM WITH
MY SON OVER THE SUMMER.
I WAS UPSET AT HIM AND TALKING
TO HIM VERY CLOSE.
SO I'M YELLING UP LIKE THAT.
>> Stephen: THAT'S THE WEIRD
PART.
>> YEAH, AND THEN I REALIZE I

MY SON IS GOING TO GIVE ME SOME
SWIMMING TIPS.
SO HE GOES -- HE GOES, JUST GET

HE DID A LAP, AND I DID HALF A
LAP.
HE TURNED AROUND, CAME BACK AND
FINISHED A LAP.
SO HE DID TWO LAPS IN THE TIME
IT TOOK ME TO DO ONE.
AND I WAS JUST, LIKE, WHAT
HAPPENED TO MY SWEET LITTLE BOY,
YOU KNOW.
( LAUGHTER )
MY BIG FEAR WAS, LIKE, YOU
KNOWS, BECAUSE IT'S THE DEEP END
OF THE POOL, MY BIG FEAR IS I
WOULD GET TO THE DEEP END TO
HAVE THE POOL AND START TO GIVE
UP AND START DROWNING AND MY SON
WOULD HAVE TO COME AND SAVE MY
LIFE, YOU KNOW.
>> Stephen: THE BIG FEAR IS
YOU'RE DROWNING AT THE END OF
THE POOL AND HE DOESN'T COME AND
SAVE YOU.
>> THAT IS TRUE.
( LAUGHTER )
BUT AT THIS EXCLUSIVE RICH
PEOPLE'S HEALTH CLUB --
>> Stephen: I HEAR IT'S VERY
NICE.
>> IT'S VERY NICE.
WE HAVE LIFEGUARDS.
>> Stephen: THAT'S NICE.
YEAH.
>> Stephen: SPEAKING OF RICH
AND EXCLUSIVE, YOU GOT SEASON

COMPARE IT TO "BLUE BLOODS."
ARE YOU TOM SELLECK IN THIS COP

>> Stephen: SO YOU'RE THE STAR
OF THE SHOW.
>> IF I'M NOT THERE, SOMETHING
IS WEIRD, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?
>> Stephen: YEAH.
JUST LIKE TOM SELLECK'S
MUSTACHE.
IF HE DOESN'T HAVE HIS MUSTACHE,
YOU'RE GOING, WHO IS THAT DUDE?
>> Stephen: TOO MUCH LIP.
YEAH.
SO IT'S A SHOW ABOUT TWO COPS ON
A STAKEOUT, BASICALLY, AND WE'RE
WATCHING OTHER PEOPLE ON THE
STAKEOUT.
>> Stephen: CHASINGS OR --
NO, IT'S A LOT OF SITTING
DOWN IN THE CAR TALKING,
BASICALLY.
>> Stephen: HENCE, THE NAME

>> YES.
>> Stephen: "NO ACTIVITY,"

O THOSE PEOPLE ARE COOL.
I LIKE THAT PHRASING.
DON'T GIVE UP ON ME, NOW.
( LAUGHTER )
YOU STAY HERE WITH ME.
WE'RE GOING TO GET THROUGH THIS
THING.
>> Stephen: DID YOU SENSE IN
ME JUST NOW SOME ENORMOUS
CHANGE, THAT I WAS JUST PULLING
THE RIP CORD AND JUST ABOUT TO
BYE!
LIKE THAT?
IS THAT WHAT YOU WERE FEELING?
>> I COULD HEAR THE AIR GO OUT
OF YOUR BODY.
>> Stephen: WAITING FOR CRAIG
TO HIT THE LIGHTS JUST NOW?
( LAUGHTER )
NOW -- WHO ARE YOU?
>> I'M TIM MEADOWS.
>> Stephen: YOU'RE TIM

WE HAVE A CLIP HERE, I
UNDERSTAND.
>> YES.

DON'T --
>> I'M NOT GOING TO BAIL.
>> Stephen: YOU'RE IN A CAR.
YOU'RE IN A CAR AND A CIGAR --
>> YES!
AND I'M GOING TO GIVE --
( LAUGHTER )
NOW I REMEMBER!
( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
>> Stephen: THERE'S NO TIME!
I DON'T NEED YOUR HELP!
( APPLAUSE )
AND SO I'M GOING TO GIVE HIM A
SIGNAL BECAUSE HE'S GOING TO BE
IN THE CAR WITH THIS WOMAN.
>> Stephen: YOUR PARTNER.
YES.
AND I SAID I'M GOING TO SPLIT
WHEN UH GIVE YOU THE SIGNAL.
THAT'S THE CLIP.
( LAUGHTER )
>> LET'S COME UP WITH A CODE.
OKAY, OKAY.
ALL RIGHT.
OH, I GOT IT.
I'M GOING TO SAY, UM, WELL, I
THINK IT'S TIME FOR ME TO STEP
OUT AND HAVE MY CIGAR.
AND THEN YOU WILL SAY, ARE YOU
CRAZY?
THOSE THINGS WILL KILL YOU!
>> OKAY.
WHY AM I SAYING THAT?
>> BECAUSE IT JUST SHOWS YOU

How to Talk About Money in English - Spoken English Lesson - Duration: 15:18.
Hi, I'm Kasia.
Welcome to Oxford Online English!
In this lesson, you're going to learn how to talk about money in English.
You'll learn useful English words and phrases to talk about common money topics such as your
spending habits, salary, borrowing money, and more.
But wait, is it okay to talk about money?
Maybe you heard someone say that it can be rude to talk about money in the UK or in the
US.
Sometimes it's not appropriate.
For example, it's generally not acceptable to ask someone how much they earn.
However, people talk about money all the time; in this lesson you'll see how to talk about
money in a natural way in English.
You're going on holiday again?!
How can you afford it?
I can barely pay my rent each month.
Well, I've been saving up for it.
How do you do it?
I make a budget for each week, so I decide how much I can spend, and what I can spend
money on.
That way, I know how much I'll save.
But how does it work?
I'm pretty careful with my money, but I find it really difficult to save much.
It's the little expenses that add up.
You buy a bottle of water here, a sandwich there, a takeaway pizza in the evening…
They don't cost much, but over time you end up spending more than you realise.
I guess you're right.
But, how do you stick to it?
Don't you just want to have a takeaway pizza once in a while?
Ask yourself: which would you rather have?
Most people waste a lot of money on things they don't really want.
I really love travelling, so I'm happy to cut back on some less important things so
that I can pay for it.
You're right, but I don't think I could be that frugal.
I'm not a big spender or anything, but I really enjoy splashing out and treating myself
occasionally.
Here's a question: can you name three things you can do with money?
You heard a lot of useful phrases in the dialogue.
Of course, you can spend money.
You can also save money or waste money.
You spend money on something.
For example:
I don't spend much on food.
He spends a lot of money on gadgets and technology.
How much do you spend on rent every month?
You can use waste money in the same way:
They waste a lot of money on things they don't need.
Someone who spends a lot is a big spender.
The opposite?
Someone who spends very little money is frugal.
These words are neutral; they don't have positive or negative associations.
What about save money?
You can save for something, or you can save to do something.
Often, instead of saying save money, you can use the phrasal verb save up, which has the
same meaning.
For example:
I'm saving up for a holiday next year.
We're saving up to buy a car.
In order to save money, you can make a budget: you make a spending plan, and write down everything
you spend so that you stick to your plan.
If you're saving for something, you might need to cut back on other things, meaning
that you spend less than usual.
On the other hand, some people aren't so good at saving.
Some people like to splash out; they spend money on things they enjoy.
You can also treat yourself, by spending more money than you usually would in order to do
something nice for yourself.
What about you?
Are you a big spender, or are you more frugal?
Do you find it easy to make a budget and save money, or do you like to splash out and treat
yourself?
Think about these questions and how you could answer them.
If you aren't sure, remember that you can go back and review the dialogue and the explanations
again.
Let's move on.
So, I'm thinking of moving to London.
I got a job offer, but I'm not sure about the salary.
It sounds good, but I've heard London is expensive, so I'm not sure.
I guess it depends on your lifestyle, but you definitely need more than in other places.
My friends who live in London all make decent money, but they don't have much left over
at the end of the month.
Mostly, they're just getting by.
They offered me 25k.
That would be okay in most places I've lived, but I'm not sure I'll be able to make
ends meet in London.
It'll be challenging!
That's on the low side, for sure.
Put it this way: I know someone who makes around 45k, and she says she struggles in
London.
Anywhere else, you'd be very well-off making that sort of money.
Hmm…
I guess I'll look for something better.
In most English-speaking countries, people talk about annual salaries: the amount you
make each year.
Also, it's normal to talk about the amount before tax.
For example, '25k' in the dialogue means 25,000 pounds per year before tax.
In case you're wondering, the average salary in London is around 29,000 pounds per year,
while the average cost of living for a family of four is around 4,000 pounds per month,
assuming a comfortable but fairly basic lifestyle.
If your salary is higher than average, you can say you make good money or make decent
money.
In this case, you'll probably be well-off: not rich, but with enough money to have a
nice lifestyle and not worry about money.
On the other hand, if you only just make enough to cover your costs, you can say you're
just getting by.
This means that you have enough money to live, but not much more.
If you say, I'm just getting by, it suggests you don't have a lot of extra money to spend
on eating in restaurants, going out, travelling, and so on.
For example:
I don't earn a lot, but I get by.
--> Meaning: I make enough to pay all my bills, but I don't have much spare money.
If someone doesn't even make enough to cover their basic expenses, like rent, bills, food
and transport, then they are struggling.
You can also use the phrase make ends meet, which you heard in the dialogue.
Do you know what it means?
Make ends meet means to cover all of your expenses.
Let's see some examples:
I can barely make ends meet.
He's struggling to make ends meet.
I don't know how we'd make ends meet if we had another child.
If you say that someone can barely make ends meet, you mean that they don't earn much
money, and so it's difficult for them to pay all their bills and cover their regular
expenses.
What salary do you need to make to get by where you live?
How much does someone need to make to be well-off?
Think about these questions and how you would answer them.
Let's look at the next section.
Did you hear?
He might lose his house.
He told me he's six months behind on his mortgage payments.
Seriously?
I knew he was in debt, but I had no idea it was that bad.
He has other loans too, apparently.
The car, the furniture: everything was bought on credit.
He has three or four credit cards, all maxed out.
He owes a lot of money.
What's he going to do?
Well, he can't even keep up with the interest, let alone the actual repayments.
He'll have to declare bankruptcy, but he'll lose everything.
That's awful.
Of course, he should have been more responsible, but how could they lend him so much money?
They must have known he wouldn't be able to pay it back.
I don't know.
It's a bad situation.
When you borrow money from the bank, you take out a loan.
If you're borrowing money to buy a house or an apartment, there's a special word
for it: mortgage.
The spelling is strange, so practice the pronunciation: mortgage.
You need to repay a loan.
Generally, you do this by making payments every month.
Some of the payment is interest: an extra percentage which you pay to the bank.
When you finish paying back a loan, you pay it off.
If you have a lot of loans, then you're in debt.
This means you owe money.
In the dialogue, you heard the phrase he owes a lot of money.
Let's look at some more examples with this language:
It'll take us another ten years to pay off our mortgage.
The interest on our car loan is ridiculously high.
I never borrow money; I don't like being in debt.
In the dialogue, we were talking about someone who had bought a lot of things on credit.
If you buy something on credit, you take out a loan just to buy this one thing.
We also mentioned that he has maxed out credit cards.
You max out a credit card when you borrow the maximum amount you can on it.
Finally, if you can't pay back your debts, you'll have to declare bankruptcy.
Your debts are cancelled, but you also lose anything you have which is worth money.
So, think about some questions: have you ever taken out a loan or bought something on credit?
In your country, if someone is in a lot of debt, can they declare bankruptcy?
What happens to the money they owe?
Again, think about how you would answer these questions, and review the dialogue and the
explanations if you need to.
Ready to move on?
Let's talk about one more thing.
Can I tell you something?
What?
I'm so excited!
I'm going to be rich!
Really?
How's that?
I found this article online.
It told me about all of these shares which are definitely going to go up very soon.
I bought as many as I could.
Now I just have to sit back and wait for the money to come rolling in.
Are you sure about this?
How much did you put in?
All the savings I had.
And…
Are you sure that's a good idea?
Why not?
These shares will take off, and I'll double or triple my money.
It's easy.
What if they go down?
You could lose everything!
It's not likely.
These companies are solid.
It's a one-way bet!
So, which companies did you invest in?
Well, one was… er… .and then… er…
I can't actually remember the names, but it's very exciting stuff.
Biotech, you know?
Oh, really?
Well, good luck.
You can buy me dinner when you've made your first million.
Deal!
What can you do with your savings?
You can keep them in the bank in a savings account, but you won't earn much interest.
Alternatively, you can invest in something, like shares, bonds, or funds.
You can say shares or stocks; both have the same meaning.
You say stock market, but in other cases, share is more common.
You can invest in or put money into something.
More informally, you can also get into something.
For example:
Do you think I should get into crypto?
He put half of his savings into government bonds.
You should only invest in shares if you know what you're buying.
When you buy an asset, like a share or a bond, its price can go up or down.
If it goes up very far or fast, you can say it takes off.
If it goes down very fast, it crashes.
For example:
I bought Apple shares in 1989.
I knew they'd take off one day!
They lost a lot of money when the stock market crashed in 2008.
If you do well, you might double or triple your money.
Triple means you increase something three times; for example, if you turn 100 dollars
into 300 dollars.
If you don't do well, you could lose everything or get wiped out.
If you get wiped out, you lose all of the money you invested.
Let's look at some example sentences:
If you make 7 per cent a year, you can double your money in ten years.
He put his life savings into Enron shares, then got completely wiped out.
If you had savings to invest, what would you invest in?
Think about how you would answer.
Finally, we have one more question for you: some people say that money can't buy happiness.
Do you agree with this idea?

Did Jesus Really Die on a Cross? - Duration: 4:42.
So, how do we know for sure that Jesus died?
I mean, a lot of people said he didn't die.
A lot of people said he just passed out, right?
He passed out from
blood loss, or from heat exhaustion or heat stroke,
or just the fact that he was up all night long.
The exhaustion that was in his body.
And then Nick and Joe come along – Nicodemus, Joseph of Arimathea –
and they take his body and they put it in a recovery chamber.
And then after a while, he gets better and he leaves.
There's a lot of people that think that Jesus didn't actually die on the cross.
And it's eternally crucial
for us to know that he, in fact, did.
Because our God is a just God.
And what that means is he, he can't let sin go unpunished.
The Bible says the wages of sin
is death.
And so someone's got to pay that price of death
in order for forgiveness
to be given, restoring our relationship with God.
So how do we know for sure that Jesus died?
Well, there's passage after passage after passage
in the Bible that says Christ did in fact die.
One of my favorites is here from Romans, chapter 5.
Let me read this for you.
Again, reconciled means we were broken in relationship, now we're restored in our relationship.
It says right here we were reconciled through the death
of Jesus.
So, thank you, Lord, that Christ died for us that our sins
have in fact been paid for.
But let's go a little deeper
to understand the truth of how we know Jesus did physically die for us.
And see, anytime you have a question in the Bible,
go to the immediate context.
And then right oftentimes, right there, you'll find the answer.
And the immediate context here is the soldier testing to see if Jesus' body is dead.
So you remember the soldier comes, he stabs, he pierces Jesus' side, removes that spear
and then the Bible says – and this is key –
there's a sudden flow
of blood
and water.
Now why is that key?
If the body is alive, when it gets stabbed or punctured and the
the spear, the arrow, the knife gets removed,
the hole is there but the body clenches
that hole tight and sends blood there to clot it,
to stop it.
Doesn't matter if you are almost dead but if there's any life,
it closes.
But if the body is dead, when the body gets stabbed,
and that knife, that arrow, whatever it is, spear gets removed,
the hole remains opened.
You ever wonder when you're watching a cop TV drama
and there is the autopsy results of a murder that happened?
And they say the person was stabbed seven times while they were alive
and ten times after they died.
You go, "How in the world do they know that?"
Because the body when it's alive, after the knife is removed, it cinches,
it closes.
If the body's dead, even if it died a moment before,
it stays open.
So that soldier is watching to see what the body does, how it reacts.
And when he pulls that spear out, it stays open.
And whatever's inside
flows out. It's not just blood that clotted, it stays open.
And blood
and water – you're about 70% water –
as soon as you die, your body breaks down blood
and water pours out.
Scientific proof, right there,
that Jesus died for us.
And what does that mean?
It means Christ paid the price for you.
It means that Jesus came down from heaven
to earth so that he could do one job,
to restore your relationship with the Almighty,
to reconcile you
through his death
so that you,
so that you can live forever.
How do we know that Jesus died?
Well, the Bible shows us.
And how will we know?
One day,
we'll be with God in heaven.

FanDuel NFL Picks & Lineups: Saints vs. Cowboys Single Game | Heavy.com - Duration: 7:49.
FanDuel NFL Picks & Lineups: Saints vs. Cowboys Single Game | Heavy.com
For those daily fantasy football players who have taken the deep dive into single-game slates, FanDuel brings multiple solid options for Week 13.
An interesting matchup between the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys on Thursday Night Football kicks off the week, matching up two teams playing arguably their best football of the season.
To cover this slate, I'll provide insight on the FanDuel single-game options between the Saints and Cowboys.
This will include top picks, choices for the MVP spot and an optimal lineup.
For those who haven't played this style game yet, the rules are fairly straightforward, but here's a quick look at the general idea behind the game.
Select five players (one MVP) while staying in the $60,000 salary cap MVP choice will receive 1.
5-times the points as regular flex plays Can use any position, including kickers and defenses Can play two quarterbacks if you choose to.
Let's jump in by first breaking down the top MVP plays of the slate and then roll into the optimal lineup.
Top FanDuel MVP Picks for Saints vs.
Cowboys.
Many fantasy players are on both DraftKings and FanDuel, and there is one big difference between the two sites when it comes to single-game slates.
On DraftKings, the MVP (called captain there) costs 1.5-times the price while also receiving the bonus while FanDuel doesn't increase the cost of the player.
In turn, you'll want to build FanDuel lineups with a top-tier option as your MVP, but also do your best to be unique to differentiate your lineup.
Here's a look at my favorite MVP targets, listed in order:.
Ezekiel Elliott ($16,500) Alvin Kamara ($14,500) Michael Thomas ($14,000) Amari Cooper ($12,500).
Although I like the idea of spending down slightly as a way to get a lower-owned MVP, there's not much reason to go below Cooper and the $12,500 price tag.
I do like Cowboys wideout Cole Beasley quite a bit, so taking a chance on him in a multi-entry tournament could be worth it based on his plus-matchup with P.J.
Williams. FanDuel Optimal Lineup.
MVP: Michael Thomas: ($14,000) Alvin Kamara ($14,500) Amari Cooper ($12,500) Wil Lutz ($10,000) Cole Beasley ($8,500).
I really wanted to get Ezekiel Elliott in the MVP spot as I think most will be worried about his tough matchup.
Unfortunately, for the optimal lineup that didn't work, but I'd recommend using him in quite a few other places on this slate.
Instead of Elliott, I opted to get Cowboys exposure with Amari Cooper and Cole Beasley.
Cooper simply loves primetime games, and that goes back far beyond his superb performance in the Cowboys' Thanksgiving victory.
Although he had an up-and-down 2017 season with the Oakland Raiders, two of his best games of the season came in primetime matchups.
The one that stands out most was a monster 11-catch performance for 210 yards and two touchdowns against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday Night Football.
As far as Beasley goes, I love his matchup with Williams, and it may be the best on the slate.
Although Cooper's arrival has impacted the slot receiver to some extent, Beasley has still seen 19 targets in that four-game span.
He also posted games with four and five catches prior to last week, so the targets and opportunity are there.
On paper, the Michael Thomas play may seem a bit iffy based purely on the matchup.
The Cowboys have allowed just 1,594 yards and eight touchdowns to opposing wideouts.
The Saints are unique when it comes to moving their star receiver around, though, and he also sees a fair amount of work out of the slot.
Thomas has a huge upside and I believe the team goes to unique lengths to get the ball in his hands here.
The choice on Alvin Kamara comes down to a matchup spot with the Cowboys run defense.
Dallas is without linebacker Sean Lee once again, which will open up the middle of the field a bit for Kamara as a pass-catcher.
While the Cowboys have allowed just 779 rushing yards this season, they've also given up 66 receptions to opposing backs, so the potential to haul in multiple passes is there for Kamara.

[試騎] Aprilia RSV4 RF test ride - Duration: 17:26.
Hello everyone, this is 13N.
We are test riding Aprilia RSV4 RF today
It's my session now. Gotta hurry so I don't miss it
start
This V4 engine
This seat is high, very high
I am on my tiptoe
the rear set is also very high
After all, this one is
a true race machine
Ok, the current setting is in Race Mode.
With Traction Control Level 3
That is what they have set for us
I can adjust it myself, but they prefer having traction control on
Of course, I have it on
I am actually a blank piece of paper when it comes to riding this bike
I have not ridden any other high end liter bikes
like this one
Turn in is so easy. alright, entering the track from outside lane
let's do a few laps and see
they said the brake is really powerful
Brembo M50 Monoblock
Compared to prevoius version, which was the M430. this is M50
Unfortunately, I have not ridden any bike with the previous M430, so I can't really compare them
Wow this turn in
it also has auto blip, quick shifter
Upshift
Downshift as well
yup, just keep pressing for downshifts
Fitted with Supercorsa SP tires
This is the RF version
highest spec of RSV4
I think it's around $24,000 USdollar
Very expensive bike
The throttle is very delicate
Listen to the blip and downshift
wow...this brake
I mentioned that I have no prior experience with this type of machine what so ever
never ridden such a high specification, fully electronically controlled liter bike
So I am afraid I will be spoiled.
I'd be biased if I ride any other liter bike
Its power output is very linear, oh my god.
I don't even need to keep it at high rev
I can just stay around mid to top
and it's very smooth and consistent
you don't have to keep it at the edge to ride it
There are oil stains on the ground, be careful
Haha
its Anti Wheelie Control
to prevent accidentally wheelie
helped keeping the front down
you can adjust the bike frame
its chassis is adjustable
which also allow seat height adjustment I believe
Ok, S1000RR in the front
actually, I don't need to use clutch at all for downshift
it's a habit since I was just riding my street triple
The feel of this brake. Oh god
How can I describe this feeling?
If you are already used to riding such high end liter bikes
then I am sorry
I can't give you much feedback
Because I have not ridden other new liter bikes
I don't even ride a liter bike myself
I could only offer my first ride experience
that's an R1
ok. downshift, let's use quickshifter
Want to pass this guy...but
not my own bike, it's a demo ride
ouch, piece of shredded tire just hit me
racers are so fast (today is race practice day, so the group is mixed with racer and track day riders)
this bike has
cornering ABS
Latest Bosch
9.1
not planning to test it though...hahaha
This beep (downshift)
Super nice
Ok, session ended
what? it's over?
Ok, ok, with this
liter bike
I have forgotten the actual weight
Actually I know that this is lighter
than ZX-6R 636
if this is lighter than a 600 class bike
impreesive
This RF version has a forged aluminum wheels
If it is RR, I remember it is a regular cast aluminum
Of course, his biggest difference is its...
what a sound
Ohlins suspension. NIX in the front. TTX shock with reservoir at the back
but
I don't have enough experience to properly describe how it feels
I can only tell you, really
It's about a hundred times better than I imagined.
Ohlins Steering Damper here
when I rididng
I find it very helpful. Could use a few more clicks to increase resistance though
God
has it ended? !
A blink of an eye
20 minutes passed
can't believe it
Holy shit
Oh my god...
did you hear that?
speechless
Oh, yes. the traction control
you can switch on the fly
you can change mode here. see on the left
other bike might require you to stop or slow down
but to switch race, track modes
you need to do it on the right
can only be done when letting go of gas
I am now in Race Mode
I guess you really get what you pay for...such delicate machine
Not sure when I can fully handle this type of motorcycle
actually, put it this one. I don't think I'll ever
master a liter bike like this
but if it's just riding for fun. feels great!
really really impressed
Holy Sh*t
If I get a chance to ride other superbikes
I can use this as benchmark. is it fair though?
this is the RF. highest spec.
Other Aprilia
look at him. he is much taller than Iam
yet he still needs to tip toe
now you know how tall this bike is
This V4 engine
Panigale is now with V4, this is V4.
back then VFR is V4
but they are not sportbikes anymore
look at this fin. so cool
you are really flying on the ground
even looks kind of like a fighter jet
the rear sets, turns, leverage
are so much easier than my street triple
This is the RR version
the differences are in the front here. not ohlins
uses Sachs. rear is Sachs as well
the wheels here are not forged
that's where the price differs
oh, the RF has this connection module
in the dashboard where you can connect to your phone
RF version gets complete riding record
so you can track how you ride
it's about 4~5000 US dollar difference
Okay
Just done riding the Aprilia
On the track
it's really night and day riding a sportbike on the track
especially one that's born for the track
That sense of stability
I came in with zero superbike experience
After riding the highest specification RSV4
if there are other test rides
for sportbike or liter bikes
I'd unconsciously compare them with this Aprilia
not fair though. RF is the highest specification after all.
I know a lot of people ask me
why I don't test ride sportbikes
well, I rode... actually excluding small bikes
The only sportbike test ride I did last time was Yamaha R6.
The main reason is
well... last time when I rode the R6
the demo ride was just circling around the neighborhood.
you can't really test the bike
but under a closed course condition like this
it's awesome. you can really test it
KTM....eh?
Oops, what is it called? Crossbow, right?
The one behind should be Formula 3 (F3)
Sonoma Raceway
considered as a more luxury race track
Red Bull, Ferrari
Inside the garage
all high end sports car
All in all, I was waiting for this type of opportunity.
where I can really test ride the sportbike
and get a feel of its performance. feels awesome
alright, that's it for the test ride
if you like my video, give me a thumb up and you are welcome to subscribe
I'll see what other test ride events there are
so I can share with you guys
See you next time. Thanks folks!

Road bike accessories. This is recommended! I see! I wanted to know! - Duration: 11:31.
Hi YouTube Hello, welcome to Animal Land
I would like to introduce this time
I used it a lot. Before as well
I introduce it when I purchase it. I climbed a slope
Introduction was properly done,
It was awesome so I will introduce it once more
That's it.
This is the one attached here, but it is a mechanical gradiometer
As for mechanical type, now what percentage is known immediately on the spot
It is that kind of guy
So, you can see the gradient a bit behind like gps
I do not know right now, but I will check it later with a computer
It's not like that Understand on the spot
I know it on the spot so ride it
I will climb the 10% slope from now
Yes 10%. Here is 10%. It is about 10% gradient at this level
Steadily rising and steep slope 20%
It is this gradient.
In a like manner actually
When I am climbing a slope
I feel it.
You can see the gradient, not the feeling
I am shooting from here, so I think that this image is here. Toward the corner
I think there is something, is this it? This? I do not understand.
I will do it when I edit it later
What is this gradometer
When actually climbing a slope
I do not know if you are also well
So doing a long Hill Climb
After all, there are times when it gets harder, such as an amazing slope, a time when it is a steep slope.
I think there are various situations, but
There is no time to think that you would like to know the current slope at that time?
When I think that the condition of the body is really terrible
Or if you are climbing a slope but thinking it's a little easier
I do not know how it gets, as long as the gradient is known, so it will be faster
I think that it is very pleasant to see the state at that time and I will attach this
After all, as you are climbing Now some? When
I can not see it on a cycle computer or a smartphone
I think it would be nice to be able to see it
I always use it like that
From now on I will ride Moricolo Park,
How it looks when you actually ride Just a bit
I will explain. Well, let's go.
Well, I'm thinking of leaving.
It is a little down here. It's a parking lot now
It's about 5% uphill now
The slope is getting loose.
It is the first neighborhood of Moricolo park right now.
I am climbing a little, but 1% is out
There are problems only a little. This bubble should fit snugly between top 0 and bottom 0
I think it depends on the season
The size of this ball is subtly different
The top and bottom are free
It is at last If you tighten it too tightly it will bend
With the blame A little middle place here
The curved surface becomes tight
Because this bubble becomes narrower, adjustment of that side
At first At a flat place
You should look at the size of this soul If you were looking up at the center
Make sure the tip aligns
It is feeling now. It is good to memorize the state when the gradient is 0%
I think that you should do it in that state
I am doing dancing on purpose now
Strong dancing
From here gradient, descent becomes slightly tight
Still maybe
I think about 5% or so
OK, I am going to climb from now, but about 5% is around
I think that I have to explain a bit before that
If it's something
This bubble is a ball of air, it is a liquid like water that is around
To say what will happen
With dancing and sudden acceleration, dancing has a strongly stepping part and a part not stepping on
The bicycle will accelerate as you step on it strongly
This water will be late for acceleration
When the water is late, bubbles will come out in front I will do such a move
When dancing, air bubbles move furiously back and forth, pay attention to the movement
What do you think After this we will enter the climb of 5%
That place is coming.
I will go dancing from here.
do you understand? There are places where it is hard to see in the sun
Bubbles are moving fairly hard. Because the body itself is swinging left and right with dancing, bubbles are shaking up and down and right and left
It is a guide around the middle point moving like that
Now it's called hanging
I parked by using this fence
The slope is 24%
24% is this gradient
Surprisingly it seems I wonder if it looks like this is not that much. But actually 24% When I go to place
That's unexpected.
I will briefly explain how to install this gradiometer There are two screws on the other side here
I just stop. The size is just 38
Its size is a standard pipe size , If you are a thin type
As rubber gets stuck together, I attach it as a spacer
Very easy to install. That's all
OK, how was it? I think I found out how it looks when you are riding or stepping on dancing
I can see it like that, but I will look it up as a guide
It is stable when running at the same speed
When dancing, the inside is liquid, so bubbles go up and down
Actually I will look for the middle of it

Vlog: A Different Drummer by William Melvin Kelley - Duration: 7:04.
Hey everyone welcome back to the Waterstones vlog. It is Will here and I
think this might be my last solo vlog for 2018. That's because next week we're
going to be assembling en masse, the whole gang will be here and we'll be sharing
our favourite books of the year. And then the week after that things will be
getting distinctly Christmassy, there may even be Christmas jumpers; we
will be talking to you about the one book that we want to receive this
Christmas and the one book that we want to be giving to people this Christmas.
But that's all in the future; this week I want to talk to you about a book that
I've read recently and absolutely loved. This is the book here, it is called
A Different Drummer by William Melvin Kelley. It was initially published in 1962
and Kelley died at the beginning of last year so it's a very timely republication
for this book. He had great success with this debut novel actually when it was
published when he was only 24 and whilst he continued to write for his whole life
actually a lot of his work towards the end of his life remained unpublished and he
sort of fell out of favour. He wrote some quite varied and often quite difficult
books, this one is very easy to read and is absolutely fantastic on its
themes of race in America, segregation, civil rights. But it's approach is quite
unique and what it does is to tell the story of a town called Sutton which is
in a sort of made up state in the south sandwiched between Mississippi and
places like that. And what he's doing is telling the story of this town and in
particular one of its members, a farmer called Tucker Caliban, who was a black
farmer who one day sows salt into his fields, kills his cow and his horse, sets
his house on fire and leaves with his family. And the next day the entire black
population leaves. Which is a fantastic setup because you're like, what is going
on? Why has this happened and also what is the consequence of the black population
of an entire state deciding to up sticks and leave and to go somewhere else? And
what does that mean as a political act? It's a brilliant, brilliant set up and
interestingly Kelley tells the story not through Tucker Caliban
telling his own story but it's narrated by a series of different characters and
they are all of them white. They are the white members of this sort of fairly
well-established community which has its roots very much in the Confederate south.
Now that was quite interesting I thought at first; why is this black
writer telling an important story about black people in America through white
characters? And the sort of set up in itself, that way of telling, the
structure, that way of telling a story is a political act in itself and it very
much puts the onus on the idea of the race problem not being a problem for the
black members of that society but the problem is for the white people to deal
with. And in fact through them expressing themselves through the various chapters
and we see people from different generations speaking, you get this
fascinating insight into what race means to white people in America and the way
that these things can change through the generations. The n-word is peppered
throughout this book and in fact one of the things is that the younger
generation are learning that they're not allowed to use one n-word and they need
to use a different n-word in order to talk about the people that they live and
share the town with. And they're struggling with this language or how to
talk or how to act with black people which raises all sorts of fascinating
ideas and questions. There is this very brilliant way of slowly revealing the
character of Tucker Caliban and indeed his history and indeed the history of
the whole town through the history of its white inhabitants and
especially the history of one family which goes right back to I guess
the sort of the founding father of the state. The brilliant thing I suppose is
that if you're going to write a book which has got different authorial voices,
different characters, it's quite hard to pull that off, for them to actually be
different, but Kelly does a brilliant job of these different characters. They feel
very, very differentiated; very, very clear. And even, as I say, where there's
different ages, different attitudes; those are really, really
clearly set out in the book. So it throws up this really, quite difficult to think
about at times, ideas about race; but done with this kind of humour, almost.
He's able to comment, not in a nasty way, but by allowing
people enough space to give away their own prejudices and their own
problems. Then at the end of the book there was this really swift change in
tone which ends things in quite a brutal way and brings things right back down to
earth again. And that hits home really hard. It means it has something to say
about race in this period which is sort of the end of the 50s and going into the
early 60s but of course it still has something to say about race in America
today. And actually it has something to say about 'othering' in any part of the
world today. And in fact this idea. that the class of people who you think of as
being the people who clean your cars or clean your homes or do the jobs that you
don't want to do, if they all decided to up and leave – and this is the problem the
white characters in this book have – what does that mean for the town? What does it
mean for the state? Will they survive if 1/3 of their population disappears? What
does that mean? Now I couldn't help but look out of a
window and think about where we are now with this country and with Brexit. What
would happen if all of these people who a big section of this country have a
problem with and worry about them taking their jobs away and all that sort of stuff,
what if they instead of sticking it out doggedly and stoically and
working in the service industries that other people won't work in, if they just
upped and left: what would happen? Or indeed what would happen if politics or
Brexit demands that these people have to up and leave. What does that mean for a
country, what does it mean for its economy, what does it mean for it as a
society and a community? Difficult questions. I don't have the answers to
those questions and Kelley doesn't offer them here in this book. He
just throws it up to you. What would it mean if that was the
course of action? What would it mean if a whole group of people decided they weren't
going to take being treated like that anymore and they decided to go somewhere
else. Something for us all to think about. Really, really important question and a
really, really fascinating book. So I really, heartily recommend A Different
Drummer by William Melvin Kelley. I cannot help but now want to go and read his
other books even though they sound very very different and
this might be his best book. I don't know how available they are but I always used
to like finding second-hand books in various places. So there you go; a writer to
definitely find out more about and that is that for this week. So, as I said, join
us next week, we will be sharing our favourite books of the year. I'm not going
to tell you what mine is yet, you'lll have to come back next week and find out.
But until then, take care.
