there has never been a better time to make some extra income on the side and
so in this video we're gonna talk about twelve different side hustles that you
can do that actually will generate a decent amount of income for you and as
we're going through these I will have links to every single one down below and
additional information that I'm talking about will all be down in the
description down below so check that out if you need any more details and so with
that out of the way let's get started
all right first on the list is Uber or Lyft whatever you prefer and so I'm sure
you've probably ridden with one of them but you can drive for them and I'm sure
you know this you might have even thought about it but it's actually
pretty decent and flexible side hustle that you can take advantage of and
actually earn a decent amount of money as well
Uber and Lyft both have different earnings kind of figures that they
advertise and I've seen anything from twenty to thirty five dollars an hour
every town is going to be different so it's it's just a hard one to know
exactly what you're gonna get until you kind of start diving in a little bit but
driving for each one of these companies offers a lot of flexibility and kind of
just gives you some control over your own schedule and when you want to work
but I do know that both Lyft and Uber are really trying to recruit drivers at
the time of this recording so it's definitely an option to consider if
you're looking for a good flexible way to make some extra cash all right next
on the list is this one's kind of interesting so I stumbled across this
probably six or nine months ago but basically this guy I think his name is
Brian he kind of built his own business where he was going around to different
local businesses and cleaning picking up the trash on their parking lots and he
kind of developed a system where he's doing this and making over-or into the
six figures picking up trash off of parking lots and anyway and he created
like ebook basically where he shows exactly how to do this and you know I
more or less telling you exactly what you need to do in order to get gigs like
this and build a business like this and personally I just get excited when I see
people like this entrepreneurial spirit coming out and this guy taking there's a
little thing of walking around parking lots picking up trash and turn it into
not only a full-time income but a really nice full-time income and so for this
one if you like being outside you like walking a lot you know it's something
definitely consider alright next on the list is Airbnb and just like the first
one uber you probably have heard of this you might
have already used Airbnb you might use it all the time but you can actually
earn some really good money just by renting out your house or by renting out
even a room in your house and I've even heard about students renting out their
dorm rooms so depending what city you live in and how well-traveled it is you
could even consider that we have friends in town actually who every time they
travel and go out of town they rent their house out in many cases they
actually earn money while they're traveling because they're getting paid
more from renting out their house and they're actually spending to stay
other places so and one of the big concerns that a lot of people have and
it's just something I've thought about a lot is you know what happens if
something comes in just destroys my house and so Airbnb has this
million-dollar host guarantee where they will just take care of anything that
happens you know things are covered up to a million dollars which is really
great they also have the insurance thing taking care of this host protection
insurance and the other part of this that I like a lot that makes me feel a
whole lot better versus just renting it out to somebody on Craigslist is it
Airbnb you can see and you can choose who's going to rent out your place and
so you know you can see what kind of reviews they have and if you don't want
to run to somebody you don't need to so that kind of flexibility just eliminates
a lot of the kind of concern and risk so if you're traveling if you are you know
going on vacation this is definitely something to consider because you could
easily make a few hundred if not a couple thousand dollars depending how
long you're going all right next up is Amazon Flex and what this is is
basically you deliver boxes for Amazon so UPS isn't cutting it and you know the
Amazon is just obviously everywhere and they are just delivering stuff like
crazy especially with Prime Now and so they have this program called Amazon Flex
where you can get paid to deliver boxes for Amazon and apparently you can
make 18 to 25 dollars an hour which is really cool and it's also a very
flexible one where like I say or you can be your own boss set your own schedule
and just kind of control when you're going to do this and on top of that it's
like I don't know if it gets much easier than driving over an address with GPS
drop on a package off on the doorstep and the walking away and to be able to
potentially make $25 an hour doing that that is pretty cool all right next
on the list is an app called User Testing and it's an app website and we
actually did a separate review about it so I'll have that linked up down in the
description as well as above and basically what this is is you are
testing websites and getting paid to do it and so there are a lot of companies
who might have built a website and they want to see how users respond to it if
the website is communicating what they want to be communicated and so they hire
testers to come on the website and to give feedback you know so does this
landing page make sense do you know where to click to get to the store or
the checkout button and they'll ask you questions like this and you just answer
questions using a headset microphone and your job is just to answer questions
that they ask you about this specific website so it's really pretty simple not
much to it you get paid $10 a test and they estimate that most tests take about
20 minutes and so you're looking at around $30 an hour now the only downside
about this one is that I don't know how scalable it is in that I don't know that
you could turn this into a full time job I don't know if there's enough tests
available you know so you might be limited on what's available to you but
either way it's a pretty simple way to make some extra cash
all right next on the list is selling used books and I actually have this
video here which I will link to above as well where we go in a little bit more
detail about this but basically one thing I've done is go into Goodwill and
find used books and then I used an app to kind of scan that book to see what I
could sell it for online and oftentimes you can go to Goodwill and buy a book
for 25 cents that you might be able to sell for five or ten dollars online and
so obviously if you can repeat that a few times you can actually make some
decent money and so if you don't mind shopping through Goodwill kind of
looking for things like that which I actually enjoy I think it's really fun
this is something that you could do and earn some decent cash obviously have a
hundred percent control over when you do this and yeah a pretty good option to consider
alright next on a list is a company called LiveOps in what they do
is a higher call center agents and their virtual call center agents so you can
work from home so as long as your house is quiet or you have a quiet room in
your house where you can kind of answer these calls you're good to go and this
one also offers a good amount of flex ability in terms of setting your own
schedule the earnings on this one might be lower than a few of the other ones
we've explored on this list so far but obviously being able to work from home
and being able to set your own hours is a pretty desirable thing all right next
up is starting an eBay business and that might sound more intimidating than it
actually is and I wrote this article here which I will have linked up up
above and on the description below that you can check out but basically I did an
experiment where I wanted to see if I could start an eBay business and I went
out and bought basically some guitar necks from a wholesaler at a wholesale
price and then I resold them on eBay and I measured out my profit to kind of see
how much I get earned and to see if this was something I could scale up and all
those results are in this blog post here and I also did an interview with another
friend of mine in another video which I'll link to up above as well where he
paid off $80,000 of debt just using eBay and working a few hours on each Saturday
and so in that video he talks about his strategy of how he used eBay to do this
in which it's just really simple and so if you haven't sold anything in eBay
definitely check it out like we've we have a lot of videos about it and we
have a really simple kind of step-by-step how-to and just by doing
that selling one thing you can kind of get your feet wet to see if there's
something you would consider doing but it's it's a whole lot less intimidating
than it seems and I'll have that video linked up in
the description as well if you want to check that out and if you know and
honestly like just starting or with the stuff around your house there's a great
way to just start earning some extra cash and then if you enjoyed that then
you can decide to turn it into a business if that's something that you want to do
all right next up is a website called Upwork and this is one
where I actually go to hire a whole bunch of people and basically it's a
community of freelancers who do just about everything so as you can see on
this list here there are all kinds of different freelancers who work from this
website and so basically as a freelancer you can go here and put out a profile
and say that say that you do creative writing or maybe you do presentations
for people or logo design or maybe you do web research or maybe you're a
virtual assistant or you know any of these things and you just go
put your profile out there say that you do this at your own price whatever you want
to get paid and then people like me will come out here and we'll be searching for
something and we will hire things and I honestly most of my hires go through
this site and I know a lot of other people who hire almost exclusively from
this website like when you're looking for a freelancer so if you have some
sort of skill I mean really this is just a drop in the bucket of what they have
but if you have some sort of skill that you could freelance with this is
definitely something to consider because you have a lot of control you
know so you can you have control obviously what jobs you take but also
what your pay is so if you only want to work for X amount or over you know you
can set that you know and obviously no one's going to hire you if you know if
they if they want to pay less than that so and I've actually had a few friends
who've started here and you know just kind of got their feet wet as they were
trying to work out of you know working for another company to kind of become a
full-time freelancer and it's just a great way to start getting some business
and just kind of getting your feet wet with the whole freelance thing and in
the similar vein something else you could do is if you have some sort of
skill that you can teach other people you go to a website like this like TakeLessons
here where basically you can come on here as a teacher and you can
teach about whatever the thing is that you're really knowledgeable about so
these are just a handful of things but we'll click over here to view all
lessons just so you can see everything that's available but there's all kinds
of like academic tutoring any kind of computer skills if you're really good at
like whatever CAD software or maybe it's Microsoft Office like you can teach
people about that obviously like any kind of language or like instrument and
something that's really cool that I didn't even know they did until I
started looking at this you can do like you could teach guitar lessons virtually
so this doesn't even need to be local so you can do this virtually therefore you
can reach a much wider audience than maybe just the whatever the 15 miles
around your house that you might normally be teaching guitar lessons so
it's a great way to take your skill and turn it into some extra cash so if you
have something like that do you love to I don't know just share with people and
actually get paid to teach like this is something to consider all right next up
is Real Estate Investing and this is not like obviously a very quick turn this
into cash type of thing but my friend Brandon Turner over at BiggerPockets we
actually did an interview together and this blog post here just kind of goes
into some of these basics of how to get started as a beginner and if you're
considering doing this definitely check out this interview because Brandon is
one of these smartest guys in the industry he works for probably the
biggest real estate website real estate education website online right now
called Bigger Pockets and he's written a few books and just super super
knowledgeable and he's done all this stuff himself he started just you know
picking up one rental property and then just continuing to add more and more now
he's got a huge portfolio and it's just making a really nice income from all
these real estate holdings that he has so if you are thinking about getting
into real estate investing definitely check this out to get a little more
detail before you move forward and last on the list is a website called Turo and
I really love this one cuz basically imagine it like this it's like Airbnb
but for your car and so essentially what it is, is it's people renting out their
cars to other people wanting or needing a car so instead of having to go to
Enterprise or Hertz to rent a car you can rent from individuals and you can
rent for a fraction of the price and a lot of times it's a whole lot easier and
more convenient yeah and so I've used this as a renter a lot I haven't rented
out my car yet but I've rented a lot from it and it's just brilliant so one
of the things I love obviously is that it's considerably cheaper than renting
from the big car companies but on top of that like certain airports you might
need to take a couple trams or a bus to get over to the car rental area because
the airport's so big and you know and sometimes that takes you a half an hour
to get over there and stand in line and get your car and whatever else and many
times one of rents from Turo the person renting the car will actually come right
up to the baggage claim area and I can just walk right out with my bags and hop
in my car and so it saves me a ton of time as well now obviously in this video
we're talking about being a renter and making money from this and they just
have a little thing here we can just kind of see how much you can earn and so
and the value of a car is a big kind of component of how much you will get paid
so lower end cars like you can rent out a car that might be fifteen years old I
think I've actually rented one that was probably fifteen years old
so people will still rent it because it's gonna be cheaper to rent but even
if you do have a newer a nice car it's something to consider as well because it
will get paid considerably more and so you can just use this little chart to
kind of get a ballpark and it's gonna depend just like Airbnb on your city
and how much the demand there is but and as you would expect they have insurance
to kind of cover any accidents that might happen and being on the
renting side of things it seems like a very streamlined and pretty easy process
and as a renter you have control so anyway if you have a car and you're
interested in making some cash from it definitely consider Turo as well
all right so those are the 12 things I hope you enjoyed it hope you found some
helpful I'd love to hear from you down in the comments what ones you haven't
heard of which ones you're considering doing and if you're new to the channel
what we do here is we talk about ways to put more money in your pocket so it'll
be stuff like this ways to earn a little extra cash and also ways to save money
and then we also talk about some of the timeless biblical principles about how
to manage our money as well because what's the point of having it if we
can't manage it well so that's something that resonates with you consider hitting
the subscribe button so you can hear from us as you create more stuff oh and
if you found this helpful I'd love it if you can leave us a little thumbs up down
below just to let us know that it helped but that's all we have for today so I
will see you in the next video

The History of the Eiffel Tower documentary - Duration: 44:41.
>> male narrator: ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST BELOVED MONUMENTS,
A MAGNET FOR TOURISTS, ARTISTS, POETS, AND LOVERS, A GREAT
SYMBOL OF NATIONAL PRIDE. BUT IN THE BEGINNING, IT WAS
CALLED "A FACTORY CHIMNEY," USELESS, MONSTROUS,
AND MERCANTILE, AND IT WAS ONLY DESIGNED TO LAST 20 YEARS.
NOW, THETOUR EIFFEL, THE EIFFEL TOWER,
MAY 1940:
THE WORLD WATCHES HOPELESSLY AS NAZI INVADERS MOUNT
A BLITZKRIEG ATTACK AGAINST FRANCE--
AND MARCH TRIUMPHANTLY THROUGH THE STREETS OF PARIS.
BUT BEHIND THE TEARS OF A DEFEATED PEOPLE COMES
THE RUMBLING OF REBELLION. ENRAGED FRENCH CITIZENS ANSWER
GENERAL DE GAULLE'S COMMAND AND FIGHT FOR FREEDOM WITH
AN UNDERGROUND ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO SABOTAGE
AND OTHER ACTS OF DEFIANCE. >> male translator: THIS
RESISTANCE GREW BIT BY BIT, COMPRISED OF BOTH MEN AND WOMEN
REGARDLESS OF POLITICAL, MORAL, OR RELIGIOUS PERSUASION.
I BECAME A FOUNDER OF THE PARISIAN LIBERATION COMMITTEE
AND THE ORGANIZATION THAT DIRECTED THE RESISTANCE
AND THE NATIONAL INSURRECTION. >> narrator: HITLER HIMSELF
VISITED FRANCE DURING THE OCCUPATION.
HE MARVELED AT THE GREAT MONUMENTS.
HE REVELED IN HIS CONQUEST. EVEN THE EIFFEL TOWER,
51 YEARS OLD AND OVER 1,000 FEET TALL,
BECAME A HOSTAGE AS GERMANS EXPLOITED ITS GREAT HEIGHT,
USING THE TOWER AS AN ANTENNA TO SEND CODED RADIO SIGNALS
TO THEIR ARMIES. IRONICALLY, THE SILHOUETTE OF
THE TOWER AGAINST THE PARIS SKYLINE OFFERED HOPE
TO THE FREE FRENCH UNDERGROUND. >> [speaking French]
>> translator: IT WAS A SYMBOL OF LIBERTY,
A SYMBOL OF FRANCE. UNDER THE OCCUPATION, THE IDEA
PREDOMINATED AMONG ALL THE FRENCH TO KNOW THAT ONE DAY
ONE WOULD BE FREE TO CLIMB UP THE EIFFEL TOWER.
>> narrator: WHEN ALLIED TROOPS FINALLY LIBERATED PARIS,
THE HANDFUL OF FREE FRENCHMEN CELEBRATED BY CLIMBING
THE EIFFEL TOWER AND UNFURLING THE FRENCH TRICOLOR FLAG.
DOWN BELOW, CITIZENS SPAT AND CURSED AT THE FLEEING GERMANS.
BUT FROM THE PINNACLE OF THE TOWER, LIBERTY, EQUALITY,
AND FRATERNITY RECLAIMED ITS MANTLE OF GLORY.
FOR MOST OF THE WORLD, THE EIFFEL TOWER IS FRANCE.
IT IS LIGHT AND HOPE, POETRY AND MAGIC.
HER COMPLEX GEOMETRY HOLDS THE DREAMS OF LOVERS.
THE FRENCH MAY ENJOY THE DISTINCT HONOR OF HAVING
CREATED AND NURTURED THIS INTERNATIONAL MONUMENT,
BUT HER HOME IS IN THE HEARTS OF FREE PEOPLE EVERYWHERE.
THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT GREAT HEIGHT THAT SUGGESTS
A SPIRIT OF TRIUMPH TO THE SOUL. IT FORCES PEOPLE'S VISION
TO HEAVEN, WHILE IT OFFERS A CALMING PERSPECTIVE
TO THE CHAOS OF THE WORLD BELOW. THROUGHOUT THE AGES, PEOPLE HAVE
CHALLENGED ARCHITECTURAL AND ENGINEERING LIMITS TO
ACHIEVE GREAT STRUCTURAL HEIGHT, SOMETIMES TO SPY ON ENEMIES
APPROACHING FROM THE DISTANCE AND, AT OTHER TIMES, IN AN
ATTEMPT TO GET CLOSER TO GOD. THERE ARE THOSE WHO INSIST ON
FINDING PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS FOR TOWERS.
THEY MAKE GOOD BROADCAST ANTENNAS, OR THEY'RE
A FINE PLACE FOR A REVOLVING RESTAURANT.
BUT THE REAL APPEAL OF TOWERS COMES FROM A PURER NOTION.
TOWERS ARE A CELEBRATION OF WILL.
THEY SPEAK TO OUR AMBITIONS. THEY ARE THE JOYOUS DECLARATION
THAT WE EXIST. THE WORLD'S BEST-LOVED TOWER
IS THE EIFFEL TOWER IN PARIS. ITS SOARING HEIGHT, ITS DELICATE
LINES, ITS AIRY VOLUME ALL REFLECT THE BEST PART
OF THE FRENCH SPIRIT. DESIGNED AND BUILT IN 1880,
IT WAS THE CENTERPIECE IN A CELEBRATION OF THE BLOODY FRENCH
REVOLUTION 100 YEARS EARLIER. ON JULY 14, 1789, IN A FLOOD
OF REVOLUTIONARY PASSION, PARISIAN ARTISANS LED AN ATTACK
AGAINST FRENCH ARISTOCRACY AND STORMED THE BASTILLE,
THE INFAMOUS PRISON WHERE THE POOR AND POLITICALLY INCORRECT
WERE LOCKED AWAY. THE INSURRECTION SPREAD ACROSS
FRANCE, AND PATRIOTS RALLIED TO THE BATTLE CRY OF FREEDOM,
THE MARSEILLAISE. "LET US GO,
CHILDREN OF THE FATHERLAND. OUR DAY OF GLORY HAS ARRIVED.
AGAINST US STANDS TYRANNY. THE BLOODY FLAG IS RAISED.
COME TOGETHER IN THE COUNTRYSIDE TO LOWER THESE SAVAGE SOLDIERS.
THEY COME RIGHT INTO OUR ARMS TO CUT THE THROATS OF
YOUR SONS, YOUR COUNTRY. TO ARMS, CITIZENS.
FORM YOUR BATTALIONS. LET US MARCH
THAT THEIR IMPURE BLOOD SHOULD WATER OUR FIELDS."
THIS NATIONALISTIC ERUPTION REVERBERATED ACROSS EUROPE
AND SET THE STAGE FOR MODERN DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENTS.
AND THE FRENCH PEOPLE WERE JUSTIFIABLY PROUD OF
THE POSITIVE CONTRIBUTIONS THAT THEIR REVOLUTION HAD MADE.
BUT A CENTURY LATER, THE FRENCH EGO WAS BRUISED AFTER
A DEVASTATING MILITARY DEFEAT TO GERMANY.
THE IDEA OF MOUNTING A SPECTACULAR INTERNATIONAL
EXPOSITION SEEMED LIKE A GRAND WAY TO REMEMBER
PAST GLORY AND FORGET ABOUT CONTEMPORARY SETBACKS.
>> THEY WERE STILL SAD BECAUSE THERE WAS, IN 1870,
A TERRIBLE WAR WITH GERMANY, AND WE HAD LOST TWO PROVINCES,
ALSACE AND LORRAINE. AFTER THAT, FRENCH PEOPLE
WERE VERY PLEASED TO HAVE THIS EXHIBITION TO SHOW
THEY WERE VERY GREAT. THE COUNTRY WAS QUITE RICHER.
>> narrator: IT WAS DECIDED THAT THERE NEEDED TO BE A CENTERPIECE
TO THE CELEBRATION, AN ARTISTIC STATEMENT WHICH WOULD LOOM
OVER THE CROWDS. THE BRAVADO OF THE INDUSTRIAL
AGE SUGGESTED AN ENGINEERING ACCOMPLISHMENT, A TOWER.
>> THE TOWER WAS IMPORTANT AS SOMETHING VERY CLEVER
IN TECHNOLOGY, YOU SEE. NOBODY IN THE WORLD WAS ABLE
TO BUILD A TOWER OF 1,000 FEET. LOTS OF PEOPLE TRIED IN AMERICA.
THERE WERE LOTS OF PLANS OF TOWERS, BUT THEY NEVER
BUILT THEM. >> narrator: A COMPETITION
WAS HELD FOR A DESIGN. ARCHITECTS FROM ALL OVER FRANCE
SUBMITTED ELABORATE PLANS. >> THE FIRST ONE WAS DONE BY
A MAN CALLED MAURICE KOECHLIN. HE WAS ONE OF
THE FIRST ENGINEERS IN GUSTAVE EIFFEL'S STAFF.
>> narrator: GUSTAVE EIFFEL WAS FRANCE'S PREMIERE
ARCHITECT-ENGINEER. HIS REPUTATION SPRANG FROM
HIS VISIONARY WORK ON BRIDGES. HE EXPLORED THE REVOLUTIONARY
CONCEPT OF METAL-FRAME CONSTRUCTION.
HIS GENIUS ATTRACTED THE FINEST ARCHITECTS IN FRANCE
TO HIS STUDIO. AND EIFFEL'S ASSOCIATION
WITH A PROJECT VIRTUALLY GUARANTEED ITS FUNDING
AND COMPLETION. TWO YOUNG ENGINEERS ON EIFFEL'S
STAFF, MAURICE KOECHLIN AND EMILE NOUGUIER, ACTUALLY CREATED
THE CONCEPT OF THE 300-METER TOWER FOR THE 1890 EXHIBITION
IN PARIS. THEY SKETCHED THE FIRST CRUDE
DESIGNS FOR A FRAME STRUCTURE, THEN CALLED ON ARCHITECT
STEPHEN SAUVESTRE TO ADD ORNAMENTAL FLOURISHES,
THE ARCHING FLORAL ELEMENTS AND SCULPTURAL NUANCES.
THEIR ROMANTIC INSPIRATION WAS AN 1887 FRENCH ARCHITECTURAL
NOTION THAT ONE COULD TOUCH THE SKY FROM A STRUCTURE IF IT
REACHED THE IMPOSSIBLE HEIGHT OF 1,000 FEET.
EIFFEL SAW THEIR PLANS AND SHARED THEIR DREAM.
THEIR WORK WAS SOON ADOPTED BY MR. EIFFEL.
AT FIRST, EIFFEL AGREED TO ADD HIS NAME TO THE CONTEST
SUBMISSION TO IMPROVE ITS CHANCES OF WINNING,
BUT HE QUICKLY BECAME INTERESTED IN THE TOWER CONCEPT
AND BEGAN TO ADD HIS OWN UNIQUE FLOURISHES.
ONCE EIFFEL'S NAME WAS ON A PROJECT, EVERYONE KNEW THE
OUTCOME OF THE COMPETITION. WITH HIS SOCIAL AND POLITICAL
CONNECTIONS, EIFFEL WAS WELL EQUIPPED TO PUSH THE PROJECT
THROUGH THE PARISIAN BUREAUCRACY, AND HE HAD THE
TECHNICAL ABILITY TO TRANSFORM THE PROJECT FROM A PAPER DESIGN
TO A THREE-DIMENSIONAL REALITY. THE TOWER WAS DESIGNED TO
REPRESENT FRANCE'S PARTICIPATION IN THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION.
AS A SYMBOL AND AS AN ENGINEERING CHALLENGE,
THERE WAS A LOT RIDING ON THE SUCCESS OF THE TOWER.
BUT EIFFEL WAS DETERMINED TO EXHIBIT THE SAME INNOVATIVE
SPIRIT AND CONSTRUCTION THAT HE HAD EMPLOYED IN THE DESIGN.
>> narrator: IT IS AIR AND LIGHT,
FORM AND MOTION, AS STURDY AS MAN'S RESOLVE AND AS ETHEREAL
AS HIS THOUGHTS. THE EIFFEL TOWER IS AS MUCH
AN IDEA OF STRUCTURE AS IT IS AN EXTRAORDINARY PHYSICAL MONUMENT.
AND THE PROCESS OF ITS CONSTRUCTION REFLECTS BOTH
THE CONCEPT OF PREFABRICATION FROM THE INDUSTRIAL AGE AND
THE ADVANCED BUILDING THEORIES OF THE DAWNING 20th CENTURY.
FEBRUARY 28, 1887, GUSTAVE EIFFEL GATHERED A CROWD
OF DIGNITARIES TO WITNESS THE COMMENCEMENT OF CONSTRUCTION.
HE WAS 53 YEARS OLD, AND THIS TOWER WAS TO BE
HIS CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT. AS THE CEREMONIES PROCEEDED,
50 ENGINEERS WERE STILL DRAFTING OVER 5,300 DETAILED BLUEPRINTS
FOR THE 132 WORKMEN AT THE SITE.
IT WOULD TAKE FOUR MONTHS TO LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR THE LEGS.
TWO PILLARS WERE SET ON 6 1/2 FOOT-THICK CONCRETE SLABS
SET 23 FEET BELOW GROUND. THE REMAINING TWO LEGS
WERE POSITIONED SO CLOSE TO THE SEINE RIVER THAT WATERTIGHT
METAL DAMS WERE LOWERED INTO THE DAMPER SO THE CONCRETE COULD SET
BENEATH THE SEEPING WATERLINE. THE SQUARE ENCOMPASSED BY
THE FOUR LEGS WAS 426 FEET ON EACH SIDE, BROAD ENOUGH
TO EVENLY DISTRIBUTE THE STRUCTURE'S 7,000 TONS OF IRON.
ONTO THESE FOUNDATIONS AROSE MASONRY BASES EMBEDDED
WITH TWO ANCHORING BOLTS FOR EACH OF THE FOUR FEET.
FROM HERE, THE LEGS WOULD RISE AT A SHARP 60-DEGREE ANGLE
AS HOLLOW FRAMEWORK BEAMS. THE BEAMS WERE MADE OF ANGLE
BRACKETS AND FLAT BARS RIVETED TOGETHER WITH STIFFENERS
ATTACHED TO THE SIDES. FOUR OF THESE ASSEMBLIES
COMBINED TO FORM THE ENTIRE BEAM.
THE BEAM HAD THE SAME STRUCTURAL DYNAMIC AS A SERIES
OF INTERLOCKING CUBES. AND THIS IS THE GENIUS OF
EIFFEL'S DESIGN; THE FRAMEWORK SUPPORT IS AS STURDY AS SOLID
STONE, AT ONLY A FRACTION OF THE WEIGHT.
IT WAS ALSO EASILY ERECTED WITH STANDARDIZED, INEXPENSIVE,
PREFABRICATED MATERIALS. EVENTUALLY, 18,000 METAL PARTS
AND 2.5 MILLION RIVETS WOULD COMPRISE THE TOWER.
YET ALL OF THE PIECES ARE EITHER FLAT BARS,
ANGLE BRACKETS, OR PLATES. THE FIRST STAGE OF THE
CONSTRUCTION WAS ALSO THE MOST CRITICAL.
ALL FOUR LEGS NEEDED TO RISE SIMULTANEOUSLY AND MEET ON AN
EXACT HORIZONTAL PLANE AT THE TOWER'S FIRST FLOOR.
THE RADICAL ANGLE DEMANDED SCAFFOLDING SUPPORT FOR EACH OF
THE LEGS AND A CENTER SCAFFOLD TO SUPPORT THE CENTER RING
GIRDER WHICH HELD THE STRUCTURE TOGETHER.
800-TON THRUST JACKS OPERATED BY MANUAL HYDRAULIC PUMPS
INSTALLED UNDER EACH LEG HELPED TO RAISE AND LOWER THE FOUR
SIDES INDEPENDENTLY IN ORDER TO REACH THE REQUIRED PRECISION.
WHEN THIS WAS ACHIEVED, GUSTAVE EIFFEL KNEW THERE WAS
NOTHING THAT COULD STOP THE COMPLETION OF HIS DREAM.
ALTHOUGH THERE WERE THOSE WHO WOULD TRY.
>> EIFFEL WAS ANNOYED BY PEOPLE WHO LIVED NEAR THE TOWER
WHO SAID THAT IT WILL FALL ON THEIR HOUSES.
AND NOBODY WOULD COVER THE RISK. HE COVERED IT BY HIMSELF.
>> narrator: LIKEWISE, MANY PEOPLE FEARED THAT THE TOWER
WOULD DESTROY THE PARIS SKYLINE. >> WHEN IT WAS STARTED TO BE
CONSTRUCTED, SOME PEOPLE TRIED TO STOP IT, YOU SEE.
AND SOME PAINTERS OR WRITERS, ARCHITECTS WROTE A LETTER SAYING
IT WAS A SCANDAL. >> narrator: THE PARIS ARTS
COMMUNITY SAW THE TOWER AS A RUDE INDUSTRIAL IMPOSITION
ON THE CITY'S BEAUTY. DOZENS OF FRENCH WRITERS AND
PAINTERS ATTACKED THE TOWER IN A PUBLIC DECLARATION.
"I FEEL PARIS IS THREATENED," CLAIMED ONE ARTIST, "BY THIS
POSITIVELY TRAGIC LAMPSTAND ISSUING FROM HER STOMACH."
EIFFEL RESPONDED WITH EQUAL PASSION.
"THE TOWER WILL BE THE HIGHEST BUILDING EVER RAISED BY MAN,"
HE EXCLAIMED. "WILL IT NOT HAVE A MAJESTY
OF ITS OWN?" BY APRIL 1, 1888,
THE 300-METER TOWER OF PARIS WAS AN ERUPTION OF IRON LIFTING
SKYWARD AND CARRYING WITH IT THE SPIRIT OF FRANCE.
AND FINALLY, THE GENERAL PUBLIC, IT SEEMED, WAS FALLING IN LOVE.
>> THE PEOPLE IN PARIS, GENERAL PUBLIC, REALLY FELT
A VERY STRONG FEELING OF ADMIRATION TOWARD THIS TOWER.
>> narrator: WHAT HAD BEGUN AS THE SKELETAL SUGGESTION OF FORM
WAS NOW EXHIBITING GRAND, FLOWING DESIGN.
THE GRACEFUL RISE OF THE LEGS, THE ARCING, DECORATIVE
ADDITIONS CONTRASTING WITH THE STERN REGIMEN OF EXPOSED BOLTS.
HERE WAS A WORK OF ART THAT SPOKE TO AN AGGRESSIVE WORLD
PREPARING FOR DRAMATIC CHANGE. THE WORK PROGRESSED
WITH LIGHTNING SPEED. EIFFEL WAS MOUNTING
THE OPERATION AS IF HE WERE CONDUCTING A WAR WITH
CRISP MILITARY PRECISION. >> Lemoine: THE STRUCTURE WAS,
IN FACT, PREFABRICATED IN THE EIFFEL FACTORY.
WHILE THE TOWER WAS ASSEMBLED, AT THE MOST YOU HAD SOMETHING
LIKE 300 PEOPLE WORKING ON THE SITE.
>> narrator: BITS OF THE STRUCTURE LITTERED THE SITE
LIKE SCATTERED PIECES OF A CHILD'S ERECTOR SET.
RIVETING TEAMS WORKED IN GROUPS OF FOUR TO KEEP UP
WITH THE FRANTIC PACE. AS SOON AS ONE LOAD OF IRON WAS
ATTACHED, FOUR 12-TON CRANES WOULD DELIVER MORE, CRAWLING UP
THE GUIDE SHAFTS WHERE FUTURE ELEVATORS WOULD SOAR.
THE SECOND FLOOR WAS FINISHED A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AFTER
THE START OF CONSTRUCTION. AND LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER THAT,
ON MARCH 31, 1889, THE ENTIRE TOWER WAS COMPLETE.
IT HAD TAKEN ONLY TWO YEARS, TWO MONTHS, AND FIVE DAYS
TO BUILD WHAT WOULD BE THE WORLD'S TALLEST STRUCTURE
FOR THE NEXT 40 YEARS. AND REMARKABLY, THERE WAS NOT
A SINGLE DEATH AS A RESULT OF THE CHALLENGING
AND DANGEROUS WORK. EIFFEL, HIMSELF, WAS THE FIRST
TO CLIMB THE 1,710 STEPS TO THE SUMMIT AND UNFURL
THE FRENCH TRICOLOR FLAG. BENEATH HIM WAS THE CITY
OF PARIS. IT SEEMED AS IF ITS SOUL
WAS BEING FUNNELED UP THE MIGHTY LEGS OF THE TOWER
AND SPRAYED ACROSS THE SKY IN A CELESTIAL CELEBRATION.
WHEN THE 1889 UNIVERSAL EXPOSITION OF PARIS WAS
OFFICIALLY OPENED, THE GLITTERING CENTERPIECE WAS
THE 300-METER TOWER. OFFICIALS CALLED IT THE GREATEST
CROWD-FLABBERGASTING MACHINE EVER BUILT.
BUT SOON, IT WAS SIMPLY KNOWN AS THE EIFFEL TOWER.
>> [speaking French] >> female translator: THE TOWER
WAS CALLED, AT FIRST, THETOWER OF 320 METERS,
EVEN IN THE BEGINNING, THEPYLON OF 320 METERS
THEN THE320-METER TOWER. I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHEN IT
BECAME THE TOWER OF MR. EIFFEL, AND LATER, THE EIFFEL TOWER.
I THINK IT ESCAPED HIM THAT IT WOULD GO ANY FURTHER THAN A
VERY HIGH FUNCTIONAL TOWER OF GREAT DIMENSION.
>> narrator: THE EIFFEL TOWER IS ROOTED IN BOTH THE MAJESTIC
AND THE MUNDANE. IT MAY HAVE BEEN THE TALLEST
STRUCTURE ON THE PLANET, BUT IT WAS EQUALLY CHERISHED
BY MR. EIFFEL BECAUSE OF THE TREMENDOUS PERSONAL INCOME
IT GENERATED. >> [speaking French]
>> male translator: YOU KNOW, MR. EIFFEL PRACTICALLY FUNDED
THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TOWER. IN FACT, HE PAID FOR MOST OF IT,
AND HE MADE A DEAL. HE SAID, IF YOU GIVE ME
THE RIGHT TO WORK ON IT FOR 20 YEARS, I'LL AGREE
TO FINANCE IT 80%. IF HE HAD NOT BELIEVED IN THE
SUCCESS OF HIS TOWER, HE WOULD NOT HAVE JUMPED INTO THIS
VENTURE IN WHICH HE SUCCEEDED SO MAGNIFICENTLY.
>> narrator: EIFFEL HAD A PRIVATE APARTMENT ON THE TOWER
FROM WHICH HE CONDUCTED SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTS AND MET
WITH IMPORTANT DIGNITARIES. ALL THE WHILE, HE COULD WATCH
THE ELEVATORS LIFTING NEARLY TWO MILLION TOURISTS TO THE TOP
IN THE FIRST YEAR, REPRESENTING OVER $1 MILLION
INCOME TO EIFFEL AS HE PERSONALLY GARNERED THE RECEIPTS
FROM TICKET SALES. >> EIFFEL COULD EARN MONEY WITH
THE PEOPLE GOING UP, AND HE MADE AN INCREDIBLE LOT OF MONEY.
HE WAS VERY RICH AFTER. >> EIFFEL WAS NOT AT ALL
AN ARTIST. HE WAS AN ENTREPRENEUR.
>> narrator: CONTRASTING OPINIONS OF MR. EIFFEL
SPRING FROM THE MULTIFACETED AND CONFLICTING
NATURE OF HIS CHARACTER. HE MAY NOT HAVE BEEN AN ARTIST,
BUT HIS APPROACH TO METAL-FRAME CONSTRUCTION ESTABLISHED
A STRUCTURAL AESTHETIC WHICH IS STILL ADMIRED TODAY.
HE MAY HAVE BEEN A NATIONAL HERO AFTER BUILDING THE TOWER IN
1889, BUT THE NEXT YEAR HE WAS CONVICTED OF PROFITEERING
IN THE FAILED FRENCH EFFORT TO CONSTRUCT A PANAMA CANAL.
THE CANAL WAS THE DREAM OF FRENCH ENGINEER
FERDINAND DE LESSEPS, WHO HAD TRIUMPHED WITH HIS SUEZ CANAL
AND WAS DETERMINED TO DUPLICATE THE FEAT IN PANAMA.
DE LESSEPS INVITED EIFFEL TO SUGGEST AN ENGINEERING APPROACH
TO ACCOMPLISH THE JUNGLE WATERWAY, AND EIFFEL PROPOSED
AN INNOVATIVE SYSTEM OF LOCKS. THAT IDEA WAS REJECTED BY
DE LESSEPS, AND THE RESULT WAS DISASTROUS.
CANALS CANNOT BE CARVED THROUGH SWAMPS AND JUNGLE.
THE ATTEMPT PROVED SO EXPENSIVE AND UNPRODUCTIVE, THE FRENCH
GOVERNMENT WAS NEARLY THROWN INTO BANKRUPTCY.
THE POLITICAL FALLOUT WAS SEVERE.
ANYONE EVEN REMOTELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE FAILED EFFORT WAS
VILIFIED, AND EIFFEL WAS SENTENCED TO 24 MONTHS
IN PRISON. THAT JUDGMENT WAS LATER
OVERTURNED. BUT BY THEN, EIFFEL HAD LOST
HIS APPETITE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS.
>> EIFFEL WAS CONSIDERED BY ALL ENGINEERS LIKE A GOD, YOU SEE.
AND HE WAS VERY--HE WAS ALSO A MAN OF SCIENCE.
HE LOVED SCIENCE. AND AFTER THE TOWER,
HE STOPPED BUILDING THINGS. >> narrator: INSTEAD, EIFFEL,
NOW 73 YEARS OLD, DEDICATED HIMSELF TO PURE
SCIENTIFIC STUDY, SPECIFICALLY THE EXPLORATION OF AERODYNAMICS.
OTHER FRENCH VISIONARIES, LIKE AUTHOR JULES VERNE, HAD APPLIED
CRUDE 19th-CENTURY NOTIONS TO THE CONCEPT OF FLIGHT, AS
ILLUSTRATED IN THIS EARLY FILM PROPOSING A TRIP TO THE MOON.
EIFFEL REALIZED THAT ADVANCEMENT IN AVIATION WOULD NEED TO
BE BASED ON THE SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF THE NATURAL ELEMENTS.
BUT WHILE SOME WELL-MEANING RESEARCHERS WERE MIRED IN THE
IDEA OF OUTLANDISH MECHANICAL CONTRAPTIONS, AND OTHERS WERE
ATTACHING FEATHERED WINGS TO THEIR ARMS AND TOSSING
THEMSELVES OFF THE TOWER LIKE BIRDS, EIFFEL RETURNED
TO HIS ANALYTICAL ROOTS AND BUILT A WORKSHOP THAT STILL
OPERATES TODAY. >> [speaking French]
>> translator: MR. EIFFEL, WELL, HE MADE THE FIRST
WIND RESISTANCE TESTS. BECAUSE ALL OF HIS LIFE
HE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE WIND. THAT WAS HIS ENEMY, NUMBER ONE.
AND IN 1906 TO 1909, HE BEGAN TO QUESTION AERODYNAMIC
RESISTANCE, AND THAT'S WHY HE MADE THIS FIRST WIND TUNNEL.
ONE CAN SAY THAT IN THIS WIND TUNNEL, WHERE YOU'RE
STANDING RIGHT NOW, FRENCH AVIATIONARY STUDIES BEGAN.
I MUST SPECIFY THAT THE TUNNEL, THE VENTILATOR, THE MOTOR,
AND ALL OF THESE ARE ORIGINALS. WE DON'T TOUCH THEM.
WE LEAVE THEM IN THEIR ORIGINAL STATE.
AS FOR MEASURING DEVICES, OF COURSE, WE ADAPTED THEM
FOR MODERN FUNCTIONS. MR. EIFFEL WAS
AN EXTRAORDINARY ENGINEER. WE'VE EXAMINED ALL HE DID DURING
HIS LIFETIME AND ALL THAT HE ENVISIONED.
AND TODAY, WE ARE DOING THINGS THAT MR. EIFFEL ALREADY DID
IN 1917. >> narrator: EIFFEL'S BIGGEST
VISION, THE 300-METER TOWER, WAS ONLY SUPPOSED TO STAND
FOR 20 YEARS. BUT EIFFEL HAD GROWN ACCUSTOMED
TO USING THE STRUCTURE AS HIS PERSONAL RECEPTION AREA,
A WAY TO MAINTAIN HIS HIGH PROFILE OVER PARISIAN SOCIETY.
EIFFEL LAUNCHED AN AGGRESSIVE CAMPAIGN TO KEEP HIS TOWER
FROM THE WRECKING BALL. HE CONDUCTED OVER 5,000
EXPERIMENTS IN HIS LOFTY LABORATORY,
BUT IT WAS RADIO THAT SAVED THE DAY AND THE TOWER.
THE GIANT METAL STRUCTURE WAS THE PERFECT ANTENNA.
AND FROM THE TOP, SIGNALS COULD BE TRANSMITTED AS FAR AWAY
AS NORTH AMERICA. ALTHOUGH DESTINED FOR DEMOLITION
IN 1909, EIFFEL'S TOWER WON A REPRIEVE AS RADIO HELPED
FRANCE MONITOR THE DARK CLOUDS OF WAR LOOMING OVER GERMANY.
IN 1914, WORLD WAR SWEPT OVER THE EUROPEAN CONTINENT.
FOR PARIS, THE CONFLICT CAME SO CLOSE THAT SOLDIERS OFTEN
TOOK TAXIS TO TRAVEL TO THE FRONT LINES.
BUT WITH THE HELP OF THE EIFFEL TOWER, GENERALS COULD LISTEN IN
ON THE MOVEMENTS OF THE ENEMY AND DECLARE ZEPPELIN ALERTS
FROM THEIR ELEVATED PERCH. IN 1923, FIVE YEARS AFTER
THE LAST ECHOES OF WAR, GUSTAVE EIFFEL DIED.
THROUGHOUT HIS 91 YEARS, HIS VISION PROPELLED FRANCE
TO THE FOREFRONT OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES, AND HIS SYSTEM OF
SIMPLE INTERLOCKING ELEMENTS ANTICIPATED THE BASIC PRINCIPLES
OF 20th CENTURY ARCHITECTURE. >> narrator: AFTER
THE DEVASTATION OF A WORLD WAR, PARIS WAS ANXIOUS
TO LIFT ITS BATTERED SPIRITS AND EMBRACE A BRIGHTER DAY.
YET, SOME SENSED A SUBTLE DESPERATE UNDERCURRENT
TO THE CELEBRATORY ESPRIT. IT WAS IF THE FRANTIC GOOD TIMES
WERE MASKING THE MANY ISSUES THAT THE WAR HAD LEFT UNSETTLED.
PARIS IN THE '20s ATTRACTED A LOST GENERATION, DISILLUSIONED
WITH TRADITIONAL VALUES AND PHILOSOPHIES.
SOME OF THESE POST-WAR PARISIANS WERE ACTUALLY AMERICAN ARTISTS
AND INTELLECTUALS SEARCHING FOR MEANING IN A SEEMINGLY
CHAOTIC WORLD. F. SCOTT FITZGERALD AND HIS
WIFE, ZELDA, CHARLIE CHAPLIN, MOVIE STARS, PAINTERS, AND
A MIXED ASSORTMENT OF CREATIVE INDIVIDUALS BECAME ATTRACTED TO
A FRENCH REVOLUTION IN THINKING CALLED EXISTENTIALISM.
IS WHAT WE ARE THE SUM OF OUR EXISTENCE?
ARE TIME AND POETRY NOTHING MORE THAN ABSURDIST FANTASY?
DARKER THEMES OF ALIENATION STARTED TO EMERGE IN THE ARTS,
AND IRONICALLY, THE TOWER PROVIDED A VISUAL AND SYMBOLIC
LINK TO A LIGHTER AND MORE STABLE TIME.
AFTER ALL, EIFFEL HAD CREATED WEIGHTLESS BEAUTY
FROM DENSE, HEAVY METAL, VERY REASSURING CONCEPT.
THE EIFFEL TOWER IS NOT ONLY THE IRON COMPOSING IT, BUT ALSO
WHAT'S INSIDE, AIR CAPTURED IN A LATTICEWORK OF METAL.
SOME VISITORS FEEL THAT THEY ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE.
THE SENSATION SUGGESTS THAT IT'S NOT ONLY THE STRUCTURE,
BUT ALSO ITS VOID WHICH IS THE ESSENTIAL MATERIAL
OF THE EIFFEL TOWER. THE TOWER'S BOLD COMPOSITION
SEEMED A POETIC LINK BETWEEN THE 19th AND 20th CENTURIES,
A LINK WHICH WOULD BE BRUTALLY SEVERED WHEN FASCISM, RACISM,
AND SYSTEMATIC MURDER ERUPTED FROM THE ASHES OF GERMANY'S
DEFEAT IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR. MAY 1940: IN THE TERRIFYING
PANIC OF A NAZI BLITZKRIEG, PARIS AND THE EIFFEL TOWER
WERE TAKEN HOSTAGE. BUT GERMAN TROOPS FOUND IT
DIFFICULT TO FULLY UTILIZE THE MONUMENT.
FRENCHMEN HAD DAMAGED THE ELEVATORS.
THIS SABOTAGE KEPT EVEN HITLER FROM SAVORING HIS CONQUEST.
>> THERE'S A VERY FAMOUS PHOTO WHERE HE'S ON THE TROCADERO.
HE LOOKS AT THE TOWER, BUT HE HASN'T BEEN ON IT.
THERE WERE NO LIFTS; HE COULDN'T GO.
>> narrator: SEEING THE TOWER OCCUPIED BY NAZIS ENRAGED
FRENCH CITIZENS. PARISIANS JOINED TOGETHER
IN FUTILE COUNTERATTACKS. THE FREE FRENCH SECRETLY
CONSPIRED IN THE ANCIENT ROMAN CATACOMBS WHICH WEAVE BENEATH
THE STREETS OF PARIS. TUNNELS HIDING THE BONES OF
FORGOTTEN AND VANQUISHED FRENCHMEN THROUGHOUT THE
CENTURIES WERE NOW ALSO HOME TO THE RESISTANCE.
>> [speaking French] >> translator: THERE ARE
SUBTERRANEAN PASSAGES THAT GO UNDERNEATH THE FRENCH CAPITAL.
THE CATACOMBS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE
IN THE RESISTANCE. IT WAS A MEANS FOR US TO TRAVEL
ACROSS PARIS WITHOUT BEING SEEN, IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO
LEAD THE PARISIAN INSURRECTION ON THE OFFENSE.
WE DERAILED TRAINS, BECAUSE THOSE TRAINS THAT WENT TO THE
FRONT LINES OF THE ATLANTIC ALL WENT BEHIND PARIS.
I PARTICIPATED IN THE SABOTAGE OF RAILROAD TRACKS,
TRACKS THAT WERE OBVIOUSLY MEANT FOR TRAINS THAT
TRANSPORTED SOLDIERS. BUT ONE DAY, WE FOUND OUT
ABOUT A LARGE TRAIN THAT CIRCLED PARIS.
WE MADE ARRANGEMENTS. WE DERAILED THE TRAIN,
AND IT WAS JUST AWFUL, BECAUSE THE TRAIN WAS PACKED
WITH SAUERKRAUT. THERE WERE PARTICLES OF
SAUERKRAUT FOR MILES AROUND. >> narrator: HITLER DESPISED
THE FREE FRENCH AND PLANNED TO DESTROY THEIR
MOST TREASURED MONUMENT OUT OF SPITE.
AT THE WAR'S END, HITLER GAVE ORDERS TO HAVE THE TOWER BOMBED.
BUT GENERAL VON CHOLTITZ, WHO HAD FALLEN IN LOVE WITH THE
CITY OF PARIS, GAVE EIFFEL'S TOWER AN UNAUTHORIZED REPRIEVE.
[gunfire] >> radio announcer: PEOPLE OF
WESTERN EUROPE: A LANDING WAS MADE THIS MORNING ON
THE COAST OF FRANCE BY TROOPS OF THE ALLIED EXPEDITIONARY FORCE.
THE HOUR OF YOUR LIBERATION IS APPROACHING.
>> narrator: AMERICAN TANKS FINALLY DROVE THE NAZIS
FROM THE EIFFEL TOWER. BUT WHEN LIBERATION FINALLY CAME
TO PARIS, THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT WAS IN A SHAMBLES.
THE OLD LEADERS WERE GONE. THE NEXT GENERATION WAS
ILL EQUIPPED TO RAISE THE COUNTRY TO ITS FORMER GLORY.
FROM 1945 THROUGH 1960, THE PEOPLE OF FRANCE VOTED
20 DIFFERENT PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENTS INTO POWER.
IT WAS POLITICAL CHAOS UNTIL GENERAL CHARLES DE GAULLE WAS
FINALLY PERSUADED TO LEAD THE COUNTRY OUT OF
POST-WAR CALAMITY. ONLY A MAN OF HIS STRENGTH
AND BROAD APPEAL COULD HAVE SAVED THE REPUBLIC.
DE GAULLE RALLIED THE DISHEARTENED COUNTRY AND GAVE
FRANCE BACK ITS SPIRIT. ITS SOUL, HOWEVER, HAD ALWAYS
BEEN PROTECTED IN THE GIANT, GILDED CAGE OF THE EIFFEL TOWER.
BUT JUST AS FRANCE NEEDED A NEW VISION FOR THE SECOND HALF
OF THE 20th CENTURY, THE EIFFEL TOWER NEEDED A NEW
COMMITMENT TO ITS CARE AND MAINTENANCE IF IT WERE
TO STAND AT ALL. IT WAS DESIGNED AS THE
CENTERPIECE OF AN INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION IN 1889.
BUT TODAY, MORE THAN A CENTURY LATER, THE CELEBRATION
CONTINUES AS WELL OVER 1,000 PEOPLE VISIT THE EIFFEL TOWER
EVERY HOUR. THERE ARE FOUR ELEVATORS TO
CARRY THEM TO THE TOP, ONE IN EACH OF THE TOWER LEGS, RISING
AT A STEEP 60-DEGREE ANGLE. THE HEART OF THE HOISTING IS
ACTUALLY HIDDEN BENEATH THE LEGS IN A CENTURY-OLD CATACOMB.
HERE, COMPLEX CONTRAPTIONS RIVAL JULES VERNE'S MOST
ELABORATE FANTASIES. >> THE ORIGINAL PRINCIPLE
WAS TO HAVE WATER UNDER PRESSURE PUSHING A PISTON,
THAT WAS PUSHING A DOLLY. THE DOLLY WAS PULLING THE CABLE
TO HEAVE THE CAR UP. >> narrator: THE 100-YEAR-OLD
TECHNOLOGY FORMS AN ANIMATED MOSAIC, GIVING THE IMPRESSION
THAT THE LIFTING IS DONE BY A GIANT MECHANICAL TOY.
>> THESE PISTON RINGS, WHICH ARE INSIDE HERE, A SQUARE COTTON
WREATH ABOUT THAT BIG, COMPRESSING, AND THEY ARE
GREASED WITH MUTTON FAT, SUET. SEE, VERY WHITE.
VERY NICE FORM. TWICE A WEEK HERE, IT SMELLS
LIKE HAVING A MESHOUI, YOU KNOW, THOSE NORTH AFRICAN
ROASTED LAMB. THAT'S IT.
OLD TECHNOLOGY WORKS BEAUTIFULLY.
THAT'S LEATHER. THAT'S LEATHER, SAME MATERIAL,
BUT IT'S COMPRESSED. IT'S SHAPED TO VARIOUS SHAPES.
IT'S TRUE LEATHER, AND IT'S IMPREGNATED WITH OIL WHICH IS
MADE FROM THE HOOVES OF OXEN. >> narrator: IN 1980, OFFICIALS
DECIDED TO UPGRADE THE SYSTEM BY BLENDING THE OLD TECHNOLOGY WITH
THE LATEST HIGH-TECH EQUIPMENT. >> IT'S LIKE MIXING THE ENGINE
OF A FERRARI AND THE ENGINE OF A MACK TRUCK.
>> narrator: AT THE THIRD LEVEL, A SECOND BANK OF ELEVATORS CARRY
PASSENGERS VERTICALLY TO THE SUMMIT.
ATOP THE STRUCTURE, MAINTENANCE IS NONSTOP.
EVERY DAY A SMALL BUT DETERMINED TEAM OF 25 WORKERS WALK THE
NARROW IRON SUPPORTS FOR THE 18-MONTH JOB OF PAINTING
THE TOWER. THE PROCESS IS THE SAME TODAY
AS WHEN THE TOWER WAS ORIGINALLY PAINTED.
OVER 50 TONS OF PAINT IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE TASK,
A TASK THAT'S REPEATED EVERY SEVEN YEARS.
>> [speaking French] >> translator: I WAS
18 YEARS OLD WHEN I BEGAN THIS JOB IN THE AIR AS AN
INDUSTRIAL PAINTER. TO WORK ON THE EIFFEL TOWER,
SUCH AN IMPORTANT MONUMENT, I FEEL PRIVILEGED AND HAPPY.
>> narrator: BUT PAINTERS AREN'T ALONE ON THE ELEVATED WEB
OF IRON. ELECTRICIANS ALSO COMB
THE TOWER. >> [speaking French]
>> translator: PERSONALLY, I'D MUCH RATHER WORK UP HERE
THAN IN AN OFFICE, AND I THINK MY FRIEND AGREES.
>> translator: ABSOLUTELY. WE GET TO BE OUTDOORS.
WE LIKE WHAT WE DO. TO BE ABLE TO WORK ON A
MONUMENT LIKE THE EIFFEL TOWER IS A PRIVILEGE, I'D SAY.
>> narrator: THE EXPOSED NATURE OF THE STRUCTURE OCCASIONALLY
ALLOWS THE ELEMENTS TO INFLICT DAMAGE.
WATER PIPES CAN FREEZE AND BURST IF NOT PROTECTED BY
THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. >> translator: THERE ARE
HEATING BANDS WITH THERMOSTATS. AS SOON AS THE TEMPERATURE FALLS
BELOW 40 DEGREES, THE HEATING BANDS KICK IN.
THE PIPING IS HEATED. >> narrator: BUT THE MAIN JOB OF
THE ELECTRICIANS IS TO MAINTAIN THE ILLUMINATED BEAUTY.
360 LIGHT BULBS ARE CONSTANTLY INSPECTED AND CHANGED.
EARLY EVENING, THE SUN CASTS ITS LAST GOLD AND PINK RAYS
OVER THE CITY OF PARIS, THE HOMES, THE MUSEUMS, THE
MONUMENTS AND CATHEDRALS AND THE COUPLES WHO GATHER ON THE TOWER.
THE TOWER RESPONDS AS IF ITS OWN GLORIOUS WASH OF COLOR IS
THE REFLECTED GLOW OF LOVERS. THE LIGHTING DESIGN IS
CALCULATED TO ENHANCE THE ROMANTIC AMBIENCE.
>> [speaking French] >> translator: THE PAINT ON
THE EIFFEL TOWER CONTAINS A YELLOW PIGMENT,
LIGHTING IT WITH YELLOW LIGHT BRINGS OUT THE YELLOW PIGMENT.
THAT'S BEEN THE MAJOR SOURCE OF SUCCESS IN THIS OPERATION.
THE APPROACH IS ENTIRELY DIFFERENT BECAUSE NIGHT
LIGHTING MUST INTERPRET THE FEELING, EVEN THE EXPRESSION,
OF THE MONUMENT. THE EIFFEL TOWER LIGHTING SEEKS
TO VALIDATE THE ARCHITECTURE OF THIS STAR ATTRACTION
IN PARIS. IT'S THE STAR OF PARIS AT NIGHT.
>> narrator: THERE IS A SENSE OF OWNERSHIP
WHICH IS SHARED AMONG THOSE WHO WORK THE TOWER, ESPECIALLY
THE EMPLOYEES WHOSE TASK IS TO GREET VISITORS.
>> [speaking French] >> female translator: MY JOB,
IN FACT, IS TO ORGANIZE THE TOUR GUIDES.
I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR THE GROUP. WE'RE NOW IN THE NORTH PILLAR.
EACH OF THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE EIFFEL TOWER IS REPRESENTED
BY PILLARS IN WHICH YOU WILL FIND THE ELEVATORS.
THEN THERE IS THE BEAUTIFUL FRANCE RESTAURANT AND ABOVE IT
THE PARISIAN RESTAURANTS, THE TWO RESTAURANTS
OF THE FIRST LEVEL. AND OVER THERE IS THE CINEMAX
GALLERY, WHERE YOU'LL FIND A POST OFFICE, SOUVENIR SHOPS,
BUFFETS, ICE CREAM VENDORS. THERE ARE LOTS OF INTERESTING
THINGS IN THE GALLERY. >> narrator: THE TOWER WAS
ORIGINALLY DESIGNED AS A TOURIST MECCA, AND IT STILL SERVES THAT
LIGHTHEARTED FUNCTION TODAY. YET IT'S MAGNIFICENT VISTAS
AND STAGGERING HEIGHT SOMETIMES ATTRACTS A DARKER ELEMENT.
>> translator: PEOPLE PERIODICALLY TRY TO JUMP OFF
THE EIFFEL TOWER. ALREADY, 380 PEOPLE HAVE
COMMITTED SUICIDE. THAT'S AN AVERAGE OF ABOUT
THREE OR FOUR A YEAR. SO WE REGULARLY TRY
TO CONTROL THE SITUATION. WE TRY TO REASON WITH THEM.
WE TRY TO FIND OUT THEIR MOTIVE. WE DISCUSS IT WITH THEM.
WE TRY TO TALK WITH THEM AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE UNTIL SECURITY
COMES, AND FROM THEN ON, IT'S THE FIREMEN'S RESPONSIBILITY.
>> narrator: MORE OFTEN, A TOUR GUIDE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY
TO SEE PEOPLE IN A MORE FESTIVE AND ROMANTIC MOOD.
>> translator: I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF COUPLES WALKING ARM IN ARM.
THEY OFTEN COME TO CELEBRATE AN EVENT OR AN ANNIVERSARY.
OUR JOB ALSO INCLUDES DISCOURAGING THESE PEOPLE FROM
WRITING ON THE EIFFEL TOWER. MOST OF THE TIME WE CHASE THEM,
AND WE TRY TO CATCH THEM. AND SOMETIMES IT'S A LITTLE
GAME BETWEEN THE TOURISTS AND OURSELVES.
WE ARE ON THE THIRD FLOOR OF THE EIFFEL TOWER, IN FRONT OF
THE JULES VERNE RESTAURANT. THIS RESTAURANT IS ONE OF THE
SYMBOLS OF PARIS PRECISELY BECAUSE IT'S LOCATED WAY UP
ON THE THIRD FLOOR. THERE IS ONLY ONE EIFFEL TOWER,
ONLY ONE THIRD FLOOR. IT'S CERTAINLY THE BEST LOCATION
IN THE WORLD, UNLESS THERE'S A RESTAURANT ON TOP
OF MOUNT EVEREST. >> narrator: THE CEREMONY
AND CELEBRATION OF HAUTE CUISINE IS A TRADITION ON THE TOWER
EXTENDING BACK TO ITS EARLIEST DAYS, AND FOOD IS MORE THAN
NOURISHMENT FOR THE FRENCH; IT IS A PASSION.
>> [speaking French] >> male translator: IT HAPPENED
ABOUT SIX MONTHS AFTER I ARRIVED IN PARIS.
I INFORMED MY WIFE THAT I HAD A MISTRESS.
SHE JUST STARED AT ME, AND I SAID, "SHE'S AN OLD MISTRESS."
SHE LOOKED EVEN MORE SURPRISED. AFTER ABOUT FIVE MINUTES,
I TOLD HER MY MISTRESS IS THE EIFFEL TOWER.
>> narrator: SOME ARTISTS PAINT, OTHERS WORK IN STONE,
BUT MASTER CHEF ALAINE REX PREFERS PATE, PRACTICING HIS
CULINARY MAGIC AT THE JULES VERNE, AN EXCLUSIVE
FOUR-STAR RESTAURANT MIDWAY UP THE LOFTY HEIGHT OF THE TOWER.
>> translator: THE VIEW OF PARIS REALLY INSPIRES ME.
IT INSPIRES ME TO CREATE NEW DISHES EVERY DAY.
WE HAVE 115 PEOPLE EMPLOYED IN THE JULES VERNE
RESTAURANT ALONE. THERE'S A LOT OF HUSTLE
AND BUSTLE, A LOT OF PEOPLE. I LOVE THAT.
>> narrator: ARMED WITH SPATULAS, WHISKS, PARING KNIVES,
AND SOUFFLE CUPS, CHEF REX AND HIS MEN FIGHT
FOR THE HONOR OF FRANCE. >> [speaking French]
>> translator: TODAY'S SPECIAL, A LOBSTER SALAD IN CORAL SAUCE.
IT'S FRENCH LOBSTER. >> narrator: THE TOWER WAS
DESIGNED TO INSPIRE THE COMMON PERSON TO NEW VISIONS.
IT ALSO ENCOURAGES THE IMAGINATIONS OF ARTISTS TO SOAR.
AT THE JULES VERNE RESTAURANT, THESE TWO DYNAMICS
TAKE FLIGHT. IT IS AN APPETIZING BLEND
THAT COULD ONLY HAPPEN IN THE CITY OF LIGHT.
THE CITY OF PARIS, THE CITY OF PARIS IS OFTEN
CALLED THE CITY OF LIGHT. BUT TO WHAT QUALITY OF LIGHT
DOES THAT TITLE REFER? DOES IT SUGGEST THE LIGHTNESS
OF THE FRENCH SPIRIT? THE ENLIGHTENMENT
OF THE FRENCH CULTURE? OR PERHAPS, THE BRILLIANT LIGHT
OF THE FRENCH SKY BLEACHING MARBLE FACADES BY DAY, AND BY
NIGHT, CRADLING LOVERS IN ITS ROSE-COLORED EVENING MIST.
MAYBE IT'S THE MAGIC LIGHT OF A CABARET WHERE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC
PAINTED AND PLAYED... OR THE GLITTERING SPARKLE OF
A MERRY-GO-ROUND REFLECTED IN THE EYES OF THE YOUNG AT HEART.
THE LIGHT OF PARIS IS ALL THESE IMAGES AND EXPERIENCES.
YET IT FINDS ITS MOST VIBRANT VOICE IN THE SILENT EXALTATION
OF EIFFEL'S TOWER. >> [speaking French]
>> translator: I BELIEVE THAT THE EIFFEL TOWER HAS TAKEN AN
ENTIRELY UNIQUE PLACE IN THE WORLD.
IT'S ALMOST BECOME A MYTH. IT SORT OF GLORIFIES SCIENCE.
IT WAS BUILT DURING AN ERA WHEN IT WAS THOUGHT THAT SCIENCE
AND TECHNOLOGY WOULD MAKE MANKIND HAPPY.
I BELIEVE, ALSO, BECAUSE OF ITS SHAPE, IT IS VERY, VERY
SPECIAL AND CAN BE EASILY DRAWN. I THINK, ALSO, THAT IT IS A
USELESS OBJECT, AND THAT A USELESS OBJECT HAS A GREAT
THERAPEUTIC VALUE. >> narrator: SO THE EIFFEL TOWER
STANDS AS A MONUMENT TO THOSE THINGS WE CANNOT GRASP,
OUR JOYS, OUR HOPES. IT STILL STANDS
AS A TECHNOLOGICAL MARVEL. BUT IN ITS SIMPLE, ELEGANT,
UPLIFTING FORM, WE HAVE FOUND A WAY TO CELEBRATE LIFE AND LOVE.

Why I'm Finding Some Humor On This Infertility Journey - Duration: 2:55.
Why I'm Finding Some Humor On This Infertility Journey
Fertility doctors don't "beat around the bush" and this expression, so apt and so full of innuendo, is the most perfect way to describe every single conversation we've had regarding our fertility.
I've become so accustomed to speaking openly about this sort of stuff that my sense of normal conversational boundaries has been completely warped.
There's no time for sugar-coating when it comes to fertility investigations so if this is the route you're headed down, buckle up and get ready to talk about ejaculation and cervical fluid as casually as you would the weather.
Say goodbye to your reservations, prudish tendencies and any shred of mystery in your relationship and say hello to very in-depth discussions about your sex life with a doctor who's roughly the same age as your parents, sometimes even your grandparents.
Embarrassment serves absolutely no purpose in a fertility clinic – it's a place for evaluation, diagnosis and treatment plans so leave your dignity at the door — along with your underwear. No bushes will be beaten around – trust me.
In one of our earliest appointments, a doctor leaned forward across the desk, peered over the top of her glasses and asked my husband – with a look of complete seriousness on her face – if his testicles were bigger than the Maltesers in a box of Celebrations.
He very proudly responded that they were in fact more like Cadbury's Creme Eggs and the doctor jotted this down in her notebook whilst I sat there in complete bewilderment at their bizarre exchange of words.
My husband was blind to the comedy of the situation because he was so busy being chuffed about his Creme Eggs but I smirked for the remainder of the appointment wondering whether there was some kind of chocolate/testicle measuring scale that gets taught in medical school.
In another appointment, I was given three month's worth of progesterone to take home and experiment with. I made it as far as the reception desk before the doctor opened her door again and called out my name.
Thinking I must've forgotten something, I turned around and – across a waiting room full of people (which also included my mum) – she shouted: "It's twice a day up the anus." Oh fab. We'll put that one down as character building.
Without discrediting the very difficult and heart-breaking aspects of fertility struggles, there's some humor to be found amongst it all – if you're willing to search for it.
Laughter is the best medicine, as the saying goes, and it's definitely the coping mechanism that my husband and I have adopted throughout this bumpy roller-coaster.
So for every trip to the hospital with a blanket-clad pot of semen fastened securely in the back seat; for every month of waxy bum pellets to endure (the less said about these, the better), and for every dinner party playlist that's interrupted by an advert for ClearBlue ovulation tests blasting through the speaker, there's a subtle streak of hilarity.
Honestly, if we didn't laugh about these things, we'd probably cry. A note to the reader: It's important to remember that many people dealing with infertility are walking a far harder path than I currently am.
My husband and I consider ourselves extremely fortunate for the options we have and we are – at the moment – in a little bubble of hope awaiting our first round of IVF.
Many people will have been in my shoes before, walked this path and gone on to experience pain that I can't even begin to imagine. While I can find some humour in my own circumstances, not everybody will.
Fertility, in all its forms, is a sensitive subject and should be approached with the care and consideration it duly warrants. .

Why Pregnant Women Deserve A Babymoon - Duration: 3:45.
Why Pregnant Women Deserve A Babymoon
I didn't do any of the traditional things moms do when they're pregnant. Covering myself in paper maché to commemorate my big belly didn't appeal to me.
I felt gross for most of my pregnancy, so an ethereal photo shoot near the ocean or in a field of flowers wasn't happening.
Basically, I was just trying to get through my pregnancy and was counting down every last second until the baby arrived. But the one thing that I did do was go on a babymoon.
It wasn't my idea, though. Three months before my son was born, my husband gave me the gift of a few days away to celebrate my pregnancy and to celebrate our last hurrah as parents of one.
We had been talking about how much things were going to change for our family when the baby arrived.
From the little things like rearranging furniture to fit our son's things into our small apartment to bigger challenges like figuring out how I was going to work and take care of a baby at the same time, nothing was going to be the same again.
Of course, we were excited, but also our heads were about to explode. Thank goodness my husband had the foresight to book our getaway. We drove down to the beach where we'd spent our honeymoon years before.
As we drove along the highway, I felt the weight of the past few months lifting off of me with each mile.
My pregnancy had been tough from the day I found out I was expecting. I was juggling a full-time job with freelance gigs, taking care of my daughter, and trying to maintain my own health at the same time.
All of that, plus the complete overwhelm of preparing to have a new baby after an eight-year break had me nearly at my breaking point. I was surviving, but barely.
What's wild is that I didn't even realize how much pressure I was under. When I was in the thick of it, I would just put my head down and push forward without really thinking about what I was pushing through.
Have you've ever been so tired that you don't sit down because you know that if you do, you won't be able to get back up? That's what I was going through.
But I needed to sit my pregnant butt down somewhere. Going away on a babymoon gave me the chance to do that. When we got to the inn where we were staying, we checked into our room and crashed on the bed.
There was a spa on the property, bikes for rent that we could ride on a lovely trail to the beach, and we even had a jacuzzi on our balcony. We didn't do any of that.
We changed into our pajamas, turned on the fireplace, poured a glass of wine for him and cider for me, and then watched television and talked until we fell asleep.
Over the next few days, we got to do all of that other stuff, but that first night, it was just my husband and me chilling.
Now that our son is here, I still look back at that getaway and think about how much fun we had. Life is so different now with two children.
Getting away is a lot more difficult now. Finding someone who wants to watch two children, one of whom is a toddler, is not as easy as you might think.
The more children you have, the more complicated the family schedule gets, too. Finding time for just the two of us is hard, even at home. Actually trying to go somewhere for a few days seems impossible at this point.
If my husband would have asked me if I wanted to take a babymoon, I would have said no. That's probably why he didn't ask me.
I would have thought about the work that it would take to make the trip come together and vetoed the idea. We have a daughter in elementary school, and I totally felt guilty about leaving her.
She was already feeling the pressure of her soon-to-be big sister role. I'd have thought it was unfair to leave her behind. She needed the break from us, though, and we needed some kid-free time to bond. Thank goodness he didn't ask me.
I know a lot of moms like me who would turn down a last hurrah trip, too. Go on the babymoon. Let your lover spoil you good one last time. Relax.
Because when the baby is born, the honeymoon is officially over, and the real work begins.

Roll Hunting A Nickel Box! - Duration: 4:28.
I think we're just gonna hunt one box and nickels today kind of bring it back to old school
Hey everybody its Rob with Rob finds treasure and I've got myself a box of
nickels from a chase bank it's not even a normal Chase Bank box but somehow that's
what they had in stock so I'll take it it's from a Bank I've hunted several
times popped open the top it's circulated but I see a lot of the newer
nickels I don't have high hopes on this box of course you never know what's
inside till you get to them I checked both sides for Enders there
are no Enders that being said you know the routine we'll start with this rule
if I find something along the way I'll be sure to loop you in
hopefully we find us some silver or Buffalo proof some early Jeffersons I'd
love another vehicle like a fine one but the hunt continues let's kick it off
rolled over to got our first 40s nickel of the box
it's a 1947 - it's a 47s as well on the board with our first find roll number
three we do have a 1952 hopefully it's a denver those got a little bit more of a
premium than the knobby mark hard to tell because it's got some gunk on it of
course I think it's just a Philadelphia mint it is but it's a 50 q Ernie
Jefferson nickel and we'll take it rule number five gonna have our second
1947 nickel in the box and this one is also dirty looks like
it's just some damaged 1947 Philadelphia same roll another 1952 and this one's a
denver that's the more valuable of the 52-year won't take it
rule number seven I'm gonna have another 40s nickel here and this one is a 1941
Philadelphia oldest of the box number 12 guys and I don't know what
with proofs lately but I just thought another one 1989's proof supposed to be
silver season apparently it's proof season we'll add
it up to the top with one of the finds can't get mad at that and I wonder if I
need it for my book well the check at the end of the video to see if it's
gonna find a spot in my nickel book rule 16 is gonna have a another proof 1968's
beautiful second proof of the box rule 27 gonna have another 40s nickel here
this one's in 1949 Denver and what's nice about it is it's the fourth from
the 40s we've also already got seven from the 50s so we've got 11 early finds
but we do also have an oh nine and a couple of proofs so could use some
silver could use a Buffalo could also use a 1950 or 1939 with the MIT mark
let's keep looking rule 36 is gonna have another 40s nickel here look at this
it's another 1947 Philadelphia in the box of 47 and 57 s we finished that box
and nickels guys and you know what we got a couple of oh 9 s we ended up with
5 in the 40s and 15 in the 50s so it was a good early Jefferson box with 19 early
Jefferson's the 209 s makes 21 finds and his two proofs make a total of 23 finds
a little light on the overall finds but anytime you can find a 1989 s proof
nickel along with the 1968 proof nickel I'll take it
we should have found some silver Buffalo's but that's not the case this
time but you always hunt because you never
know when the next time is gonna be d time hopefully you enjoyed this Nicola
with me this time if you did not appreciate a thumbs up and as always
everyone happy hunting and thanks for watching
we didn't need a 1989's so I'll keep that to the side

Bleach your teeth naturally with a 100% natural ingredient | Natural Health - Duration: 5:20.
Bleach your teeth naturally with a 100% natural ingredient.
Since it is a slightly aggressive ingredient, it is essential to dilute the vinegar in water
to make mouthwashes and avoid side effects.
Most people try to keep their teeth white for a health issue but also a smile.
If keeping them all white is a very difficult task, many professional and home treatments
have been designed to achieve this.
And although the results vary from one person to another, some were able to verify that
it is possible to keep his teeth white and yellowish or eliminate unsightly stains.
But most methods cost money, and there are alternative remedies, more economic and natural.
This is the case of an ingredient that we often have at home. Its properties help to
detach the teeth and gives them a healthier appearance.
It is not anything other than the prodigious apple vinegar, a food with many benefits for
oral health.
Do you want to know why it is so effective?
Apple vinegar for whiter teeth.
This 100% organic ingredient is a traditional and known remedy in dental health.
It is made from the fermentation of ripe apples, a process during which it is transformed into
an alkaline product.
It contains pectin, natural enzymes and minerals such as iron, calcium , potassium and magnesium,
all necessary to maintain resistant teeth.
Although the majority of its benefits are related to internal health, it has been shown
that it can also be used as a mouthwash.
Its acidic compounds, such as acetic acid, reduce the presence of germs and prevent infections
such as gingivitis or caries, among others.
This substance also has a whitening action which , although it does not achieve the effects
of professional dental whitening, is a good solution against stain formation due to food
and scale.
Another benefit is that it reduces excess acidity and alters the environment that bacteria
need to grow.
This prevents the formation of new infections and decreases the unpleasant sensation of
halitosis .
Since its acidity can be a little aggressive with dental enamel, it should never be used
without first diluting it in water.
Although we can think that in its pure state, it has better effects, it can especially generate
embrittlement over time.
To be able to use it quietly, here we will teach you how to do it.
How to make an apple vinegar treatment to whiten teeth?
For the effects of this treatment to be noticed in a short time, be sure to buy 100% organic
apple vinegar.
You may find more economic presentations than others, but they are not as effective as they
have been refined and lost in nutritional quality.
ingredients.
1 spoonful of apple vinegar (5 ml); ½ cup warm water (125 ml);
Instructions.
Dilute a spoonful of apple vinegar in half a cup of lukewarm water and use it as a mouthwash
before the first toothache of the day.
Gargle for 30 seconds, spit out the liquid and brush your teeth as usual.
If you have bad breath or an oral infection, repeat the gargles two or three times a day.
Do the same treatment every day and keep patience before seeing the results.
Tips for getting better results!
Although the effects of this preparation may vary in each case, there are tips that can
help you stimulate them.
If you are trying to reduce stains on your teeth, avoid eating the following foods:
Dark chocolate; Beans;
Condiments, tomato sauce and soy sauce; Beet;
the blueberries; Coffee;
The Red wine; Soft drinks;
If you can of course consume them from time to time, the best is to limit their consumption,
at least during the treatment.
It is also important to pay more attention when you wash your teeth: you must wait at
least 30 minutes after each meal.
Some food compounds alter the pH of the mouth and when you wash your teeth immediately,
the enamel may become brittle.
Complete the treatment with a good quality dental cream and you will see: you will have
a brighter smile!

12 Best Side Hustle Ideas for 2019 [That Pay Well] - Duration: 14:35.
there has never been a better time to make some extra income on the side and
so in this video we're gonna talk about twelve different side hustles that you
can do that actually will generate a decent amount of income for you and as
we're going through these I will have links to every single one down below and
additional information that I'm talking about will all be down in the
description down below so check that out if you need any more details and so with
that out of the way let's get started
all right first on the list is Uber or Lyft whatever you prefer and so I'm sure
you've probably ridden with one of them but you can drive for them and I'm sure
you know this you might have even thought about it but it's actually
pretty decent and flexible side hustle that you can take advantage of and
actually earn a decent amount of money as well
Uber and Lyft both have different earnings kind of figures that they
advertise and I've seen anything from twenty to thirty five dollars an hour
every town is going to be different so it's it's just a hard one to know
exactly what you're gonna get until you kind of start diving in a little bit but
driving for each one of these companies offers a lot of flexibility and kind of
just gives you some control over your own schedule and when you want to work
but I do know that both Lyft and Uber are really trying to recruit drivers at
the time of this recording so it's definitely an option to consider if
you're looking for a good flexible way to make some extra cash all right next
on the list is this one's kind of interesting so I stumbled across this
probably six or nine months ago but basically this guy I think his name is
Brian he kind of built his own business where he was going around to different
local businesses and cleaning picking up the trash on their parking lots and he
kind of developed a system where he's doing this and making over-or into the
six figures picking up trash off of parking lots and anyway and he created
like ebook basically where he shows exactly how to do this and you know I
more or less telling you exactly what you need to do in order to get gigs like
this and build a business like this and personally I just get excited when I see
people like this entrepreneurial spirit coming out and this guy taking there's a
little thing of walking around parking lots picking up trash and turn it into
not only a full-time income but a really nice full-time income and so for this
one if you like being outside you like walking a lot you know it's something
definitely consider alright next on the list is Airbnb and just like the first
one uber you probably have heard of this you might
have already used Airbnb you might use it all the time but you can actually
earn some really good money just by renting out your house or by renting out
even a room in your house and I've even heard about students renting out their
dorm rooms so depending what city you live in and how well-traveled it is you
could even consider that we have friends in town actually who every time they
travel and go out of town they rent their house out in many cases they
actually earn money while they're traveling because they're getting paid
more from renting out their house and they're actually spending to stay
other places so and one of the big concerns that a lot of people have and
it's just something I've thought about a lot is you know what happens if
something comes in just destroys my house and so Airbnb has this
million-dollar host guarantee where they will just take care of anything that
happens you know things are covered up to a million dollars which is really
great they also have the insurance thing taking care of this host protection
insurance and the other part of this that I like a lot that makes me feel a
whole lot better versus just renting it out to somebody on Craigslist is it
Airbnb you can see and you can choose who's going to rent out your place and
so you know you can see what kind of reviews they have and if you don't want
to run to somebody you don't need to so that kind of flexibility just eliminates
a lot of the kind of concern and risk so if you're traveling if you are you know
going on vacation this is definitely something to consider because you could
easily make a few hundred if not a couple thousand dollars depending how
long you're going all right next up is Amazon Flex and what this is is
basically you deliver boxes for Amazon so UPS isn't cutting it and you know the
Amazon is just obviously everywhere and they are just delivering stuff like
crazy especially with Prime Now and so they have this program called Amazon Flex
where you can get paid to deliver boxes for Amazon and apparently you can
make 18 to 25 dollars an hour which is really cool and it's also a very
flexible one where like I say or you can be your own boss set your own schedule
and just kind of control when you're going to do this and on top of that it's
like I don't know if it gets much easier than driving over an address with GPS
drop on a package off on the doorstep and the walking away and to be able to
potentially make $25 an hour doing that that is pretty cool all right next
on the list is an app called User Testing and it's an app website and we
actually did a separate review about it so I'll have that linked up down in the
description as well as above and basically what this is is you are
testing websites and getting paid to do it and so there are a lot of companies
who might have built a website and they want to see how users respond to it if
the website is communicating what they want to be communicated and so they hire
testers to come on the website and to give feedback you know so does this
landing page make sense do you know where to click to get to the store or
the checkout button and they'll ask you questions like this and you just answer
questions using a headset microphone and your job is just to answer questions
that they ask you about this specific website so it's really pretty simple not
much to it you get paid $10 a test and they estimate that most tests take about
20 minutes and so you're looking at around $30 an hour now the only downside
about this one is that I don't know how scalable it is in that I don't know that
you could turn this into a full time job I don't know if there's enough tests
available you know so you might be limited on what's available to you but
either way it's a pretty simple way to make some extra cash
all right next on the list is selling used books and I actually have this
video here which I will link to above as well where we go in a little bit more
detail about this but basically one thing I've done is go into Goodwill and
find used books and then I used an app to kind of scan that book to see what I
could sell it for online and oftentimes you can go to Goodwill and buy a book
for 25 cents that you might be able to sell for five or ten dollars online and
so obviously if you can repeat that a few times you can actually make some
decent money and so if you don't mind shopping through Goodwill kind of
looking for things like that which I actually enjoy I think it's really fun
this is something that you could do and earn some decent cash obviously have a
hundred percent control over when you do this and yeah a pretty good option to consider
alright next on a list is a company called LiveOps in what they do
is a higher call center agents and their virtual call center agents so you can
work from home so as long as your house is quiet or you have a quiet room in
your house where you can kind of answer these calls you're good to go and this
one also offers a good amount of flex ability in terms of setting your own
schedule the earnings on this one might be lower than a few of the other ones
we've explored on this list so far but obviously being able to work from home
and being able to set your own hours is a pretty desirable thing all right next
up is starting an eBay business and that might sound more intimidating than it
actually is and I wrote this article here which I will have linked up up
above and on the description below that you can check out but basically I did an
experiment where I wanted to see if I could start an eBay business and I went
out and bought basically some guitar necks from a wholesaler at a wholesale
price and then I resold them on eBay and I measured out my profit to kind of see
how much I get earned and to see if this was something I could scale up and all
those results are in this blog post here and I also did an interview with another
friend of mine in another video which I'll link to up above as well where he
paid off $80,000 of debt just using eBay and working a few hours on each Saturday
and so in that video he talks about his strategy of how he used eBay to do this
in which it's just really simple and so if you haven't sold anything in eBay
definitely check it out like we've we have a lot of videos about it and we
have a really simple kind of step-by-step how-to and just by doing
that selling one thing you can kind of get your feet wet to see if there's
something you would consider doing but it's it's a whole lot less intimidating
than it seems and I'll have that video linked up in
the description as well if you want to check that out and if you know and
honestly like just starting or with the stuff around your house there's a great
way to just start earning some extra cash and then if you enjoyed that then
you can decide to turn it into a business if that's something that you want to do
all right next up is a website called Upwork and this is one
where I actually go to hire a whole bunch of people and basically it's a
community of freelancers who do just about everything so as you can see on
this list here there are all kinds of different freelancers who work from this
website and so basically as a freelancer you can go here and put out a profile
and say that say that you do creative writing or maybe you do presentations
for people or logo design or maybe you do web research or maybe you're a
virtual assistant or you know any of these things and you just go
put your profile out there say that you do this at your own price whatever you want
to get paid and then people like me will come out here and we'll be searching for
something and we will hire things and I honestly most of my hires go through
this site and I know a lot of other people who hire almost exclusively from
this website like when you're looking for a freelancer so if you have some
sort of skill I mean really this is just a drop in the bucket of what they have
but if you have some sort of skill that you could freelance with this is
definitely something to consider because you have a lot of control you
know so you can you have control obviously what jobs you take but also
what your pay is so if you only want to work for X amount or over you know you
can set that you know and obviously no one's going to hire you if you know if
they if they want to pay less than that so and I've actually had a few friends
who've started here and you know just kind of got their feet wet as they were
trying to work out of you know working for another company to kind of become a
full-time freelancer and it's just a great way to start getting some business
and just kind of getting your feet wet with the whole freelance thing and in
the similar vein something else you could do is if you have some sort of
skill that you can teach other people you go to a website like this like TakeLessons
here where basically you can come on here as a teacher and you can
teach about whatever the thing is that you're really knowledgeable about so
these are just a handful of things but we'll click over here to view all
lessons just so you can see everything that's available but there's all kinds
of like academic tutoring any kind of computer skills if you're really good at
like whatever CAD software or maybe it's Microsoft Office like you can teach
people about that obviously like any kind of language or like instrument and
something that's really cool that I didn't even know they did until I
started looking at this you can do like you could teach guitar lessons virtually
so this doesn't even need to be local so you can do this virtually therefore you
can reach a much wider audience than maybe just the whatever the 15 miles
around your house that you might normally be teaching guitar lessons so
it's a great way to take your skill and turn it into some extra cash so if you
have something like that do you love to I don't know just share with people and
actually get paid to teach like this is something to consider all right next up
is Real Estate Investing and this is not like obviously a very quick turn this
into cash type of thing but my friend Brandon Turner over at BiggerPockets we
actually did an interview together and this blog post here just kind of goes
into some of these basics of how to get started as a beginner and if you're
considering doing this definitely check out this interview because Brandon is
one of these smartest guys in the industry he works for probably the
biggest real estate website real estate education website online right now
called Bigger Pockets and he's written a few books and just super super
knowledgeable and he's done all this stuff himself he started just you know
picking up one rental property and then just continuing to add more and more now
he's got a huge portfolio and it's just making a really nice income from all
these real estate holdings that he has so if you are thinking about getting
into real estate investing definitely check this out to get a little more
detail before you move forward and last on the list is a website called Turo and
I really love this one cuz basically imagine it like this it's like Airbnb
but for your car and so essentially what it is, is it's people renting out their
cars to other people wanting or needing a car so instead of having to go to
Enterprise or Hertz to rent a car you can rent from individuals and you can
rent for a fraction of the price and a lot of times it's a whole lot easier and
more convenient yeah and so I've used this as a renter a lot I haven't rented
out my car yet but I've rented a lot from it and it's just brilliant so one
of the things I love obviously is that it's considerably cheaper than renting
from the big car companies but on top of that like certain airports you might
need to take a couple trams or a bus to get over to the car rental area because
the airport's so big and you know and sometimes that takes you a half an hour
to get over there and stand in line and get your car and whatever else and many
times one of rents from Turo the person renting the car will actually come right
up to the baggage claim area and I can just walk right out with my bags and hop
in my car and so it saves me a ton of time as well now obviously in this video
we're talking about being a renter and making money from this and they just
have a little thing here we can just kind of see how much you can earn and so
and the value of a car is a big kind of component of how much you will get paid
so lower end cars like you can rent out a car that might be fifteen years old I
think I've actually rented one that was probably fifteen years old
so people will still rent it because it's gonna be cheaper to rent but even
if you do have a newer a nice car it's something to consider as well because it
will get paid considerably more and so you can just use this little chart to
kind of get a ballpark and it's gonna depend just like Airbnb on your city
and how much the demand there is but and as you would expect they have insurance
to kind of cover any accidents that might happen and being on the
renting side of things it seems like a very streamlined and pretty easy process
and as a renter you have control so anyway if you have a car and you're
interested in making some cash from it definitely consider Turo as well
all right so those are the 12 things I hope you enjoyed it hope you found some
helpful I'd love to hear from you down in the comments what ones you haven't
heard of which ones you're considering doing and if you're new to the channel
what we do here is we talk about ways to put more money in your pocket so it'll
be stuff like this ways to earn a little extra cash and also ways to save money
and then we also talk about some of the timeless biblical principles about how
to manage our money as well because what's the point of having it if we
can't manage it well so that's something that resonates with you consider hitting
the subscribe button so you can hear from us as you create more stuff oh and
if you found this helpful I'd love it if you can leave us a little thumbs up down
below just to let us know that it helped but that's all we have for today so I
will see you in the next video

Fertility, in all its forms, is a sensitive subject and should be approached with the care and consideration it duly warrants. .

I'm gonna have a playlist down below
So just click a show more at all the details as well as everything are we sharing in today's video will be linked down below
as well
So today I have an H&M haul and H&M is offering a 30% off of everything site-wide for their US customers
20% off of everything site-wide on the canadian site and up to 50% off of everything site white on their UK website
So the first I wanna share with you guys, is this beautiful cable knit sweater
I actually shopped the Black Friday sale in store
I know that was slightly crazy
But I was there early so it wasn't total chaos in mayhem
Now this cable net sweater was originally $34.99 and it was marked down to $15
But because it was a red ticketed item those items are final sale
And I just want to let you guys know that if you spot anything with red tags in store
Those are final sale items at least in Canada, but I bought this cable sweater is absolutely beautiful
And it was such a steal at $15. I didn't even try it on in store
I just had a feeling that it would fit and it fits me absolutely perfectly it said this natural white color
So it's kind of more of an off-white or creamy color. It's not itchy at all
You can layer underneath but it's just a really kind of comfy
oversized cable knit sweater
perfect for the winter months and it's gonna keep you nice and cozy and warm which is
exactly what I'm looking for the next time I spot is this a beautiful white fluffy sweater if you guys been on my channel for
A while, you know, I'm having a major thing for white fluffy sweaters
But what I really liked about this one is the fitted sleeve
It's just really form-fitting on your arms
Which I love and it actually has it off the shoulder or Bardot style neckline and it's slightly cropped but not too short
so it's gonna tuck really nicely into your skirts your highways that folder leggings or even your jeans and I think this would be really
Actually cute with a sequin skirt or a velvet skirt if you want to dress it up a little bit more for any festive occasions
over the holiday season
This one I picked up in a size small. It comes in a variety of different colors in this almost $29.99 Canadian dollars
So I picked up at this beautiful steel gray chenille mock neck style sweater. I am obsessed with chenille
It is such a beautiful and luxurious fabric. It has such a nice Sheen to it
And I just think it looks expensive and high-end and it feels really nice and soft on your body
There's nothing it she at all about the chenille fabric this sweater. I just thought was so gorgeous in this beautiful steel gray color
I love the mock neck. It's slightly cropped and then it has a nice kind of cuff on the sleeve this one
I think I'll get so much wear out of throughout the rest of fall and into the winter season
And because it's in a neutral color
you'll definitely find yourself reaching for it next fall and next winter just has a really kind of wintery vibe about it and I love
The mock neck. This one actually comes in a variety of different colors and gray is not your thing
They have some really beautiful Burgundy's and reds this one. I picked up in an extra-small and this one retails full price for $34.99
so next up we have this gray sweatshirt, and I just thought this was such a beautiful piece of
loungewear because of the gorgeous white floral embroidery
I mean
I know you guys might be thinking why are you showing us floral things when winter is coming?
But it really has kind of a wintery vibe about it
Which I really really love and what a gorgeous piece to really kind of elevate your loungewear
It would be really cute thrown over top of your athleisure wear as well. So it has a hood at the back
It's kind of like an oversized fit. It has a wider sleeve so it's not cuffed on at the sleeve
It has little slits at the bottom and kind of more of a high-low effect. But really it's all about this gorgeous white embroidery
It's actually really kind of soft and fuzzy
I don't really know what this fabric is or stitching that they use for it
but I think it's absolutely
gorgeous and
you can easily wear this kind of in the fall in the winter and in the spring because it isn't quite a neutral color and
It's just a really fun way to elevate your loungewear, or even your athleisure wear when you're heading out the door
This is one I picked up in an extra-small and this one I did feel like was a little bit pricey
It was forty nine ninety-nine Canadian dollars
but I think it's the
embroidery
It dot really makes this piece and I think it's very eye-catching
And I think a lot of people are going to want to get their hands on this one next up
I spotted this other gray sweatshirt and I typically don't go for things that have a writing or kind of motif on it
But this one really caught my eye because of the beautiful mountain on it with the gorgeous black sequins
So I like to snowboard. I do a lot of winter activities
So I thought that this would be great for the winter season to throw on after a day of snowboarding or hiking or snowshoeing
Or just lounging around at home
You could easily throw it over top of your dude where you could actually kind of dress it up by throwing an aviator jacket on
It with your like faux, leather leggings or your athleisure leggings and a pair of running shoes
And I think it'd be really kind of a cool look and such a mountain girl
So I'm really all about this piece. It actually comes in a variety of different colors and patterns as well
this one I picked up in an extra-small and this one retails for
$24.99 Canadian dollars
Alright, so moving into some holiday inspired knitwear I do have some other items to share with you guys at all
It's not only knitwear but I spotted this sweatshirt and this very much gave me Kate Spade vibes
It says let it snow last season Kate Spade came out with the baby
It's cold outside merchandise that I thought that was really cute, but this is a great affordable option
That kind of has the same kind of similar look and feel it's in a really nice soft material. It's not itchy at all
I love the cute little white snowflakes on it
It almost looks polkadot
But they're definitely kind of supposed to be snowflakes and then it just does
Let it snow written in white and really kind of subtly and this is so cute for not only to wear
Throughout the month of December, but you could easily wear this into January as well
It's a really cute festive piece, but it's still very much has a wintery and fun feel to it
This one I picked up in an extra-small and this one retails for $29.99 Canadian dollars
This next sweater is a little bit of a wild card for me, but I was really after a
Cute ugly christmas sweater. I don't actually think this one is ugly at all
I think it's absolutely adorable and it's perfect for over the holiday season
What I love so much about this one. Is that the beautiful fairisle print I love the red
I love the cream and I really love the adorable reindeer all over the neckline
It's actually the exact same on the back as well. I love the detailing on these sleeves and the reindeer
I love their cute little red noses, but the eyes are actually beaded
So I think that's a really kind of cute added touch and actually just makes this piece look a lot more high-end
Unexpensive this piece actually contains 5% alpaca
So it does kind of have a little bit of a woolly feel to it, but it's not itchy at all
I'd still recommend that you layer underneath of it, but it is gonna keep you nice and snuggly warm
Especially throughout the month of December. This is one I picked up in an extra-small and I believe this one was $49.99 Canadian dollars
I've actually really struggled to find this one online. So by the time the video is uploaded and goes live
Hopefully I'll found it online. But I've looked on both the US and Canadian website and I can't find it
So you might actually have to head in store if you're after this piece
I also spotted these really cute and festive red socks these just look so cute and cozy and warm again
They have the fair isle print on them
which I absolutely love this time of year and they have cute little white stuffy snow bunnies on them with little hearts and these are
Actually little birds on them as well
So I just thought that these were so adorable and I love the Sherpa at the top
So they're completely lined in sherpa
But they're gonna keep your feet nice and toasty and warm if you want to snuggle up in front of Netflix
or by the fireplace. These are really cute and great for that
These ones are 14.99 Canadian dollars and they say that they come in just one size. So I'm assuming one size fits all
Hopefully they fit if you take them out of packaging to try them. I don't think you can refund them or exchange them
so for giving them as a gift make sure that they're completely
Intact in case that person wants to have the opportunity to return them the last clothing item
I have to share with you guys is this absolutely gorgeous
Camel colored wool coat. I am so impressed that I found this jacket in H&M
This one is only a hundred and twenty-nine canadian dollars and that might seem expensive but wool coats are
Very very pricey and this jacket actually contains
52% wool, which is a very impressive
I've looked at a lot of other jackets that contain a similar wool content and they are double triple the price of this one
I love the gorgeous camel color. This piece is so versatile
You can wear it at the end of fall when it's really starting to cool down all throughout winter and even into the early spring
Months because camel is just so versatile and you can pair it with so many different items in your wardrobe
I love the color and the neckline on this jacket
That's something I struggle with is finding the right kind of cut and style of the neckline
It is belted and actually buttons as well and it's a really nice length jacket
I'll try it on for you guys so you can see how gorgeous it actually is
I am honestly raving about this piece cuz I just think for the price it is so beautiful. It's lined
it's gonna keep you so nice and warm and
This one honestly was just such a steal even if I didn't get a discount off of it
129 dollars is such a great find this one. I picked up in a size zero
It was the only one left in its store and it surprisingly fits me absolutely perfectly. It's not too small
It's not too tight
And maybe that's what people were worried about and that's why they didn't pick it up is they just automatically saw the size
Zero and they thought there's no way that definitely was my first reaction
So honestly don't discount anything you really need to try things on and see if they work for you
But I highly recommend this jacket. I think this is such a beautiful piece at such an affordable price point
So the last item I picked up from H&M are at these beautiful Chelsea boots
I think that these were absolutely stunning
They are in a faux suede material just to let you guys know and the price does reflect that they're $39.99 Canadian dollars
Which is just such a still exposed so it can actually go for a lot more. I love the color of these boots
They are so versatile because they're in this beautiful tan color and I really like the contrast with the heel. I love that
They've gone with a darker sole
They just make the boot really kind of a standout piece
And then on the inside they just have a gold zip closure But it's not a completely gold zip
These ones are actually surprisingly a really really comfortable for the price
They go up to a nice little height on your ankle then surprisingly fit quite well
They're not too wide and I'm just very impressed with the style of these boots
I think they're really cute and every girl needs a good pair of flat boots in their collection
I pick these up in a US size 8 or a 39 in European sizing and I'd say that they fit perfectly and true to
Size and honestly, you can't beat that price point of 39.99. So that's everything from my H&M
Haul I really hope you guys enjoyed it looking through all these pieces with me
Today is Cyber Monday
And you definitely want to make the most of either the 20% 30% are up to 50% off

closing this led directly to exhibition where the cargo vessel is badly hole
causing an impossible situation with no hope of rectification
it took 12 up to the ship finally in 1987 the International needed the
indictments who share the trust with very large claims paid 83 million
dollars to be spent by 1990 this figure had reached almost 300 million dollars
and has since improved the standard flower who analyzed its own friends
about two hundred thousand dollars found that many of the players were caused by
human error and we're avoiding the International Maritime Organization has
been looking up at public safety management and pollution prevention for
some time now following the principles mapped out in
ISO 9002 they have developed the safety management code which sets out
procedures and requirements for shipboard management during a conference
in 1994 the code became parts of the solar scan vention and will apply to all
shipping lashes and be enforced by the various port and clan states the
standard lab already requires its members to subscribe to some fairly
basic operating procedures as a condition of membership and for leaves
the owners who do not arrive at the ASM code and use it to find it difficult to
obtain the safety management coach has a 13 points are lost each points dealing
with a specific component of safety management
the 10 main points refer to disclosure company policy commitment
decision-making written instructions level of authority logistical support
emergency procedures compliance and verification the companies will need to
define and document the minds of communications the responsibility and
authority each employee and the links between those involved in the safety
management system but the project will fail without enthusiasm from all staff
of both ashore and close and full commitment from the top you will need to
assign sufficient resources to develop both manuals and procedures or what do
you have developed over the years the code requires the appointment of a show
based designated person he'll be responsible in running the management
system and will be the direct link between ship-to-shore we must have the
independence and authority to report deficiencies to the highest level of
management safety must never be compromised
he will need to explain to the shore staff and for the ship senior officers
the new procedures and when these are up and running ordered them and listen to
and sort out any problems the overall company policy document will have to be
broken down to show what the individual ship towards crew members
responsibilities are and how they should simply be carried out I can relate to
you a story I heard last week one of the ships we manage
the safety management system would involve developing on board procedures
and training the safe working and pollution prevention these procedures
may be more bureaucratic to the current practice and for example require
approvals and superman's at the 4way that are designed to reduce
or even eliminate accidents caused by human hatch
the two men who entered the enclosed space would be alive today if they had
followed the permission to work system this requires the atmosphere to be
tested before entry for the safety management system to work all crew
members must be aware that their individual contribution makes the
difference between success and failure to assist in this a member of the
designated person too should visit each ship in the beach you get the crews help
in drafting job descriptions and working procedures the written job descriptions
and safety procedures are finalized but the shipboard management problem is
there for reference of all of us so that we know that we are doing everything
correctly every the company manual will be drafted in general terms when the
ship's master will need to study before drafting his own Candle instructions to
complement the manual a copy of these instructions will need to be sent to the
designated person once the documentation is ready the
captain will need to make sure that every crew member is aware of his
responsibilities and duties and ensure that they are drilled in the safety
management system one of his first jobs will be to appoint a shipboard Safety
Officer and to form a safety management committee form a safety committee
comprising of the senior officers two members from the crew including yourself
and call the meeting as swiftly as possible so that we can formulate the
safety working practices for this message this committee should meet on a
regular basis and the master should make sure that the copy of the minutes from
these meetings is sent to the shore-based designated person the master
should also have an ongoing communication with the shore-based
management through the designated person on updated crew training and
establishing refresher courses I can see you buddy but let me tell you that once
we have this system in place and that problem hold exists
I mean what really shit - Cheers I've never seen an accident
what's the problem well I'm very pleased to hear that but maybe you have been
just to say lucky soon we are going to break the coffee so let me tell you
about the couple of our colleagues who have not had the same luck as you John
was an engineer working for one of the larger cities
the SCOOTER was as secure as anyone's can be these days and he will relax take
it work perhaps doodle relax that's a laugh let
me tell you what happened had an engine failure while we were in a busy shipping
window so that I needed a path making hurry
chief is doing spare and the bridge were well and truly on his back I always
regarded it is my personal way so that a piece of metal and started to cut it to
size a job I done thousands of times with no problem
no problem no goggles no no sight buddy stupid
the V was also to seamen and thought uh prided himself on the speed that he
could get the freight loaded it didn't matter to him
what sort of cargo it was all the same to him and he had adapted his part of
the procedure to suit himself it's easy to be smart after the event sitting in
some nice cozy warm office but you get out there and try it you'll find
everyone takes chances I was just an image the boss is told is it but only
got a couple hours to clear everything or else we've missed the tide and I've
to say that Topsy placement overnight nobody maids so I took down the safety
rail that was getting in the way and it was all going fine until that crate on
the crane started paying for himself no one told him to be on that piece of
equipment no one was buttoned so he knocked me
down into the holes and lowered the putting on top of me I suppose so
was he lucky not in my book well I mentioned coffee before
after the party I loaded you to the various sections and discuss any
problems that you may have in detail so let's meet here again after the pub you
are sure that you think with all the latest Corrections
recorded in this job yes it's updated a designated team members will need to go
through the parent with all the different sections of the pool
and make sure they fully understand what is expected on and why it is necessary
he has to ensure that the instructions set out by the company our fault and our
weapon when the member of the designated team has left you think it is up to the
crew to make the system work
hello boy sir are you trying to take the ride out of the dam the ship's safety
officer must raise any problems with safety at the regular meetings of the
shipboard safety committee here the crew will have the opportunity to update and
improve procedures and if there are any points that they don't understand they
can ask for clarification and as per the new regulation when we have these
documents in order then the classification society will issue as a
certificate alongside the safety policy the shipping company should establish
procedures to identify describe and respond to potential emergency shipboard
situations also to establish programs for drills exercises and training to
prepare for any emergency actions ambassadorship important
as it's a loop system the ship's master I should report back to the designated
person any accidents hazardous occurrences and all incidents that don't
conform within the safety management system and suggest modifications and
improvements Thank You captain metric for your comments and we'll take on
board what you've said and look forward to receiving your detailed report once
the safety system is in place when activated there is a need to establish
and maintain procedures to control all documents of data which are relevant to
the system this means ensuring that valid documents are attainable at all
relevant locations at sea and on shore changes the document must be reviewed
and approved by the authorized personnel and obsolete documents removed as it's a
recorded system the company should pay out periodic internal audits to verify
weather safety and pollution prevention activities our weapon the person
carrying out the unit should be independent of the area being ordered
and the results and reviews should be brought to the attention of all
personnel having responsibilities in the area involved is the system causing
remedy at the time yes there is paperwork but it is for our safety it is
there and it is also for the environment safe
well gentlemen the result of your hard work and effort right here a significant
addition to us the final step in the safety management systems integration is
the issue of a document of compliance to the company and a safety management
certificate to each ship it doesn't stop here it is a dynamic constantly changing
system which requires the involvement of every member of the company to make it
work
safely is the collective responsibility of all persons on board the ship and not
just the chief officer and an ostrich with a safety system in tradition it
will be a noticeable reduction accidents to prove the problem and to the ship the
aim of the fire center is to ensure that all shipping companies have in place an
effective safety management systems enforced by your flag States
administration it would provide an international standard for the safe
management and operation ships and for pollution prevention
as with any system if it's abducted to secret individuals needs and if just lip
service is paid to its application then there's still a chance of things going
wrong
