It was a classic matchup of puncher vs. counterpuncher.
This time, the puncher prevailed.
Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, the puncher who came out of nowhere -- Thailand, actually -- nearly
a year ago to take down then-No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez not once,
but twice, survived the counter-punching skills of former flyweight champion Juan Francisco
Estrada of Mexico at the Forum Saturday night.
The Thai fighter walked away with a hard-fought majority decision, the second defense of his
WBC super flyweight title.
The three judges scored it 114-114, a draw, and 115-113 and 117-111 for Sor Rungvisai,
leading the heavily Mexican crowd to rain down boos during HBO's post-fight interviews
in the ring.
It was the main event on a night of flyweight and super flyweight fights at the Fabulous
Forum in Inglewood, Calif., and was televised on HBO.
It didn't matter that the two men are 115-pound fighters.
Sor Rungvisai and Estrada, the No. 1 challenger, are two of the best in the world at their
craft, and it carried over in the ring.
Sor Rungvisai started strong and appeared to outwork his opponent in most of the early
rounds, but Estrada, as he has so often during his career, came on strong in the second half
of the fight and took the fight to Sor Rungvisai.
He looked like the sharper fighter late in the fight and felt he did enough to win.
The 12th round was a rousing finish to the brawl as both men threw bombs for the entire
three minutes.
The 31-year-old Sor Rungvisai landed 28 of 112 power punches in the round, while Estrada
landed 26 of 75.
"The people are the judge and you can hear them say that I won," Estrada (36-3, 25 KOs)
said.
"And I thought I won the whole time out.
"If the judges saw it that way, then that's the way it is, but I thought I won the majority
of the rounds."
Sor Rungvisai (45-4-1, 41 KOs), praised his opponent.
"Estrada was a very good fighter, a strong fighter," he said.
"I loved his style of boxing and it was a good fight."
After the fight, Sor Rungvisai, who knocked out Gonzalez in the fourth round in his last
fight, said he has become the fighter he is "because I have the support of all of Thailand.
I'm thankful for all of the Thai people that came.
I wanted to bring this belt back to Thailand."
Both fighters said they would entertain a rematch.
"I'll fight anybody at 115.
And I'll fight Estrada again," said Sor Rungvisai, while the 27-year-old Estrada said he would
love a rematch, or "I'll fight any other champion."
