Revenge of the tribes: How the American Empire could fall | Amy Chua - Duration: 8:00.

I think a great example of group blindness in the United States is when Woodrow Wilson

said in 1915—in a very famous speech—"There are no groups in America.

America doesn't consist of groups.

And if you continue to think of yourself as belonging to a smaller group you're not

American."

It's astonishing that he could say this—these universalist tones at a time when Native Americans

were largely still denied citizenship, Mexican Americans were still being lynched, Asian

Americans were barred from owning land, and African Americans were being subjected to

violence and degradation virtually every day.

And yet he was saying we don't have any groups here.

So that's an example of almost willful blindness to groups.

And sometimes this kind of universalist rhetoric, "Oh we're all just one people," is a

way of hiding a lot of inequality and smaller kinds of group oppression.

So if you look at a country like Libya they're actually a little bit like the United States.

That is, they are a wildly multi-ethnic nation.

The problem is they don't have a strong enough overarching national identity to hold

it together.

And the goal is a group—or a country, in this case—that has, on the one hand, a very

strong overarching national identity: "We're Americans," but—importantly—at the same

time allows individual, subgroup, and tribal identities to flourish.

You should be a country where you can say, "I'm Irish American," or, "I'm Libyan

American," and yet be intensely patriotic at the same time.

So: "I'm Muslim American.

I'm Chinese American.

I'm Nigerian American."

So, at its best, in America, there should be a certain amount of porousness and fluidity

across tribes.

It's when tribalism gets really entrenched that things can get very dangerous.

Western democracies at their best—or just any democracies—are when people have crosscutting

group identities.

So it's like okay, I'm a Democrat or I'm a Republican but I'm also Asian American

or African American or straight or gay, wealthy or not wealthy.

Just different ways of dividing yourself so that you don't get entrenched in just two

terrible tribes.

It's sort of like, if I'm talking about sports I'm with you, but if I'm talking

about food preferences I'm with you, and you could have different groups that neutralize

each other.

One of the problems with what we're seeing in America today is that it seems increasingly

that certain tribes are hardening.

In particular, you've got what is very misleadingly called the "coastal elites".

In a way, that's misleading because coastal elites are not all coastal and they're also

not all elites in the sense of being wealthy.

Often, in this term coastal elites is included professional elites or even students who have

no money but they're well-educated, they're progressive, they are multicultural and cosmopolitan.

And we're starting to see in America something that I've seen in other countries that is

not good.

We don't want to go there.

We don't want to get to the point where we look at people on the other side of the

political spectrum and we see them not just as people that we disagree with but literally

as our enemy, as immoral, "un-American" people.

Because once you get to that point you're just not really one America anymore, and you

start to get some of the problems that you historically have seen more in post-colonial

developing countries.

So when you have one group that is just incredibly dominant—for example whites in the United

States for almost 200 years—a group that is dominant economically, politically, and

culturally.

It can feel very stable, but it's in an invidious way.

That's because there's plenty of tribalism and other voices and other people and other

groups, they just can't speak.

They can't express themselves so you don't hear from them.

So when you have a very strong group that is politically and economically dominant you

can get a lot of stability, but that's often because other smaller groups are oppressed.

So take China.

China is a group with an incredibly strong overarching national identity.

Over 90 percent of the population is Han Chinese.

Then you have all these minorities—the Uyghurs, the Tibetans, and many, many other smaller

groups or tribes—but they have no power economically or politically.

They can't say anything.

Their identities are suppressed.

In countries where there's one group just controlling everything politically and economically

you can have all kinds of injustice and oppression, but it tends to be stable politically.

What happens in other situations is sometimes power gets split.

So in many developing countries around the world, economic power is concentrated in the

hands of a tiny minority.

For example, the three percent Chinese in Indonesia.

Although only three percent of the population, the Chinese in Indonesia control roughly 70

percent of the corporate sector—and that's not an exaggeration—it's almost all of the

country's largest conglomerates.

Or take whites in South Africa.

Roughly maybe 10 percent of the population for most of that country's history under

apartheid, that tiny white minority controlled everything—all of the wealth, all the diamonds

and politics.

So these are situations where you have minority controlling an economy.

And what happens in this situation is if you then introduce democracy suddenly—majority

rule—you're not going to get peace and prosperity like Americans often expect democracy

to bring.

Instead, you're often going to get payback time where the long-resentful and suppressed

majority will use their new political power to come after that dominant minority.

One recent example is Iraq.

Iraq is a country where the Sunnis were actually about 10 to 15 percent of the population but

they were economically dominant for many, many generations.

Partly—Saddam Hussein himself was a Sunni, so he favored the Sunnis, and under Saddam

Hussein's brutal dictatorship the Sunnis ran the oil wealth, they controlled the political

power.

Although a minority, the Sunnis were also dominant under the British because the British

liked to play groups against each other.

And the British favored the Sunni minority.

And before that, under the Ottomans, the Sunnis were also dominant.

So you've got this tiny minority, the Sunnis, about 10 percent of the population, 10 to

15 percent.

Suddenly the United States comes in, topples a terrible dictator and says, "Great, we're

going to put in democracy now," expecting democracy in Iraq to bring freedom and prosperity.

That's not what happened.

The newly empowered Shi'ias, about 60 percent of the population, used their new political

power to exact revenge on the Sunnis who had basically oppressed them for, really, hundreds

of years.

So, in that case, democracy is not a vehicle for freedom and prosperity, but democracy

can become an engine for ethnonationalism and tribalism.

In the Moment - Duration: 2:43.

There's gold right here.

I don't have to go out in the world, I don't have to go travel,

I don't have to have a big job,

in order for me just to experience bliss very simply.

The land is called the Now and Here farm.

It's not the Here and Now farm, because you can be here but not be in the now,

but if you are in the now, you are here. (laughs)

How do I live simply without having to borrow money?

I wasn't going to get on a little hamster wheel again by building a big house.

All I need is a little roof over my head.

I didn't want to spend money buying food, so I'm going to grow my own food.

And so a lifestyle of simplicity.

A lifestyle of manual labour.

Carrying water, chopping wood, is just really what speaks to me,

and it speaks to my being.

In my dark phases, in my difficult times,

whenever I've returned to the soil,

it has invariably taken me into a beautiful cycle again,

of something so gorgeous and alive and real.

And in a sense, it's kept me sane.

You know, the world that I would like to see come into existance,

a world where there is more caring,

more attentiveness, more presence.

It's a world where we are more connected to nature.

It's the most sensible way of living.

To all of you who have contributed, for those of you who have shared our films,

for those of you who have written out comments, this journey is just beginning.

And we've put a Patreon link below our films,

so if you'd like to continue to support us, we'd love for you to donate below. Thanks so much.

Jared Kushner's Legal Problems Just Got A LOT Worse - Duration: 3:24.

Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law and White House staffer, is having a really, really

bad week and we're still only halfway through this week.

It started off with Jared Kushner losing his all-access security clearance, and instead

being given a restricted security clearance which means he is no longer able to access

highly top-secret documents of the U.S. government.

Now, this should have happened about a year ago, because the guy consistently lied on

his security clearance forms, but it happened.

Now, he shouldn't have any kind of security clearance, but at least they've scaled it

back a little bit.

That was Problem Number One for Jared Kushner.

Problem Number Two is a complaint filed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in

Washington, that claims that Jared Kushner violated the Hatch Act with a recent Donald

Trump Campaign 2020 email, where Jared Kushner gave a quote and identified himself with his

official title within the White House.

That is illegal.

That is a clear violation of the Hatch Act, and so CREW has filed a complaint saying somebody

needs to look into this and uphold the law that Jared Kushner very clearly, and very

obviously, broke.

But the third big problem for Jared Kushner in the last few days, is a report by the Washington

Post saying that at least four countries identified Jared Kushner as a manipulable person within

the Trump administration.

These four countries, Israel, China, the United Arab Emirates and Mexico, identified Kushner

as a guy within the Trump administration that they could manipulate.

That they could get to, change his opinions on things, or maybe use him to their own end,

because he was such a sucker.

That is what these countries saw, and that is what most people in this country see as

well when they look at Jared Kushner.

A guy that's not very bright.

A guy that doesn't understand what the hell he's doing in the White House.

And a guy that would probably take suggestions from anyone, anywhere, at any time, in any

place.

And these other countries recognized it.

So, the question remains.

Why is Jared Kushner even in this Trump administration at all?

You know, he told us he was only going to hire the best people and here we have a guy

who's facing massive ethics complaints.

He's the subject of two separate investigations about his finances, just lost his full-time

security clearance, and he's been identified by foreign countries as a guy that they can

manipulate to get their way within our federal government.

Do those sound like the qualifications of the best people?

No.

They don't even sound like the qualifications you would want in somebody washing your car,

let alone somebody with access to the president on a daily basis.

Syence x Paperwings - Float (Lyrics / Lyric Video) feat. Wynter - Duration: 3:20.

Let it all float away

Let it all float away

Let it all float away

Let it all

Let it all float away

Let it all float away

Let the skies just open up

I want the sun on my face

I wanna wake up weightless

Just like everybody else

Too hard on myself

I am worthy

I won't worry

Let it all float away

Let the skies just open up

I want the sun on my face

I wanna wake up weightless

My expectations start to change

I hold too tightly to the pain

I try to justify the rain

I get so used to cloudy days

Just like everybody else

Reckless with myself

Vodka, romance

I get too stressed

Just like everybody else

Reckless with my health

Coffee, morphine

I need more sleep

Fascism Has Arrived – Jeff Sessions To Investigate Anti-Trump Bias At DOJ - Duration: 3:33.

Proving that America is further descending into full-blown fascism, Jeff Sessions, the

Attorney General of the United States, has announced that he is going to launch an investigation

into anti-Trump bias within the Department of Justice of the United States.

According to Jeff Sessions, what he said at a Q&A earlier this week, he was going to have

the Inspector General start looking into the anti-Trump bias that may or may not have been

the cause of the ongoing investigations into the Trump administration.

Now, as far as we've seen, all of the available evidence says that no, that's just a byproduct

of people in the FBI or the DOJ actually having their own opinions about politics.

It did not dictate their investigations.

There's absolutely no evidence to suggest that these people started these investigations

because they don't like Trump, but nonetheless, Jeff Sessions wants to take the DOJ into a

new era of pure fascism where if you don't like the President, you risk losing your job.

That's what's happening right now.

This isn't about finding out the truth about this investigation.

This is about digging into the personal lives of people within the Department of Justice.

He wants to get rid of people who do not like Donald Trump, because Jeff Sessions believes

that's going to help curry favor for him with the President.

It's no secret that Jeff Sessions and Donald Trump have had a bit of a tumultuous relationship

since Jeff Sessions came into office last year, but this is pandering in the extreme,

and it is putting the United States closer and closer towards fascism.

In fact, it's not even putting us closer to it.

We're in it at this point.

Donald Trump's grand military parade that he wants to have, that's fascism.

The constant attacks on the press, that's fascism.

The attacks on institutes of higher education, that's fascism.

What Jeff Sessions is doing at the Department of Justice is fascism.

And what's really interesting about this is that Donald Trump tweeted out Wednesday morning

that, "Why is Jeff Sessions doing this?

I don't understand it.

The Inspector General's an Obama guy.

Of course he's not going to find anything."

Well, Trump, if you've got a problem with it, you could ask Jeff Sessions why he's doing

it.

You could pick up the phone and call him.

You could have one of your aides go get him and bring him to your office, and you could

ask him in person instead of posing an idiotic rhetorical question on Twitter that you already

know the answer to.

He's doing it because one, either you told him to and you're trying to make it look like

you didn't, which is what I believe, or two, because he's very, very sorry that he had

to recuse himself from the investigation, so now he's trying to curry favor with you

by doing this for you.

This isn't about justice.

This isn't about getting to the bottom of things.

This is about purging people from the DOJ offices who do not like President Trump, and

that, ladies and gentlemen, is what fascist regimes do.

What's Good In Your Hood | All Flavor No Grease | mitú - Duration: 8:39.

(upbeat music)

- Aw, yes, y'all.

What's good in your hood is what happens

when you combine ridiculously good food

with a personality that transforms an entire community.

And no one's doing it better in Watts

than Keith Garrett with All Flavor No Grease.

♫ I have a busy business, boy

(upbeat music)

♫ What's good in your neighborhood

♫ From the east to the west

♫ Showing nothing but the very best

♫ All Flavor no Grease

♫ Chef Keith making grub in these streets

♫ Following his dream

♫ No should or would or could

♫ Now that right there is what's good in your hood

♫ We out

Here we are, All Flavor No Grease.

We about to have some delicious quesadillas, here in Watts.

I'm pumped, let's get it.

They say change begins at home.

And for Keith Garrett,

that's exactly where his hustle was transformed.

Out of that transformation,

came quesadillas so good,

they feel like they've been hashtag blessed.

And the people can't get enough.

Mm, that's so good, I wanna wrap it up

and give it to myself for Christmas.

Oh, my God.

- All Flavor No Grease actually started from a dream.

I sincerely prayed about the situation

and before even the dream transpired,

I was actually a full time street pharmacist.

(Keith laughs) - Ah, street pharmacist.

- Yeah, better known as the weed man.

- [Host] Okay.

- A friend of mine came through

and he had got my last eighth of weed.

And he was like, "Settle down."

And he was like, "I got $150 in food stamps."

I'm like, "What the heck am I gonna do

"with some food stamps?" (laughs)

But then, the first thing I thought,

was like, alright, make something work.

A month later, I woke up in the middle of the night.

I got up, I said, "All Flavor No Grease?"

And I said, "What?"

So, I'm like, I'm gonna have some

of the most flavorful tacos

with the least grease as possible.

- What food item put you on the map?

- The quesadilla.

- [Host] His clever and charismatic approach

to Instagram has people coming in droves

to taste what all the hype is about.

- Hey, check this out, Mister Air 15, himself.

Yeah, we are open, 12:30,

pull up on the block, come and get your plate.

Only on the ocho though.

Hey, you hear me?

Get your steak, your shrimp, your barbecue chicken too.

(sign clacks)

My pops didn't even believe in the movement at first.

And that really hurted me to my core, it did.

- [Host] 108th Street, AKA, the ocho,

has become an oasis and a changing neighborhood.

And his delicious food has been

the catalyst for peace and unity.

But the road to be king of quesadillas

was never a smooth one.

- He was teased a lot, you know.

We didn't always have the best to put them in.

Their clothes were clean

but they weren't always the best, you know?

So, they would tease him.

But I am just so very proud of where he was

and where he is today.

- My pops didn't even believe in the movement at first.

And that really hurted me to my core, it did.

And the only thing I said,

from right here in this hallway,

I said, "I'm gonna show you, Pops, watch."

And I'm happy I'm able to show him.

Now, he's like, "Son, you did it."

Like, "I'm proud of you."

- You're making foods that are,

by and large, typically latino.

What do people say about that?

How do you feel about that?

- This guy from up north, he said, "You got it."

He said, "No matter what anybody say to you,

"you gotta keep going."

He said, "I respect it."

He said, "I came all the way from Oakland, fool.

"Just to try you."

- You got the stamp of approval

from the Hispanic community from this one dude.

(upbeat music)

Watts, a community haunted by inequality and unrest

is transitioning to a vibrant neighborhood

and Keith is at the center of this ship.

- My line, since day one,

has always been super diverse.

The whole cross section of LA and beyond, really.

You know, you can't say enough about Keith.

That's why the line is long.

The food is great and delicious

but it's nothing without Keith.

- The quesadilla flavors are like bomb.

And it's special, like, that's that God spice.

- Shall we pray, everyone?

We asked that the food be nourishing

to the body and pleasant to the soul.

And Lord, let's grub.

In Jesus name, thank God, amen.

- [All] Amen.

(upbeat music)

- Here we are in the No Flavor All Grease kitchen,

very few people come back here.

So, we are honored to be learning

how to make a quesadilla, Chef Keith style.

- So, we'll start off with our 12 in Diana shell.

Flour, that is.

Then, you start with the Colby Jack cheese.

Nice handful of it, big handful of it like this.

- Wow, the way you put your love

into the food is through your hands.

- Passion!

- We get the pico de gallo in there.

All the flavors already marinating, the heat.

- [Keith] Heaven nuggets.

- Wow.

The colors, the smells.

It's aromatic, it's beautiful.

- [Keith] You gotta get your slap.

(spatula smacks)

- It ain't right unless you slap it down.

- Now, my favorite part, the bust down.

- Oh, that's a big knife.

That's a signature move.

That changed the game.

- The most important part, plating.

♫ Ain't nothing like a drizzle, baby

♫ Ain't nothing like the drizzle

To us.

- To us, to bomb food, to you.

All flavor zero grease.

Coming up, the battle between me and Chef Keith,

right in the backyard.

All Flavor No Grease.

- [Announcer] All Flavor's finest.

(upbeat music)

- Here we are in the backyard

of All Flavor No Grease with Chef Keith.

And DJ Jswish on the ones and twos.

We're gonna have us a nice, little rap battle.

'Cause not only is he a master at Mexican food,

but he's a master MC.

And we're gonna test some bars out here.

(bell dings)

- [Video Game Announcer] Round one, fight.

♫ Yeah

- [Announcer] All Flavor's finest.

- [Woman] DJ Jswish, RJ on the beat.

♫ I'm from Brooklyn but now we in Watts

♫ I'm here at the food spot

♫ Here we are gettin' crazy

♫ Gonna be awhile, don't be lazy

♫ Teach the kids how to do it

♫ Pass it on, that's how we do it

♫ Freestyle off the top, here we go

♫ Not gonna stop even if I'm like oh no

♫ I'm gonna do it 'til I can't do it no more

♫ Here we are counting one bar, two bar, three bar, four

- Okay.

Okay.

♫ He did his stuff

♫ Yeah, he did his stuff

♫ Oh, yeah, yeah, he did his stuff

♫ Now I'm on camera

♫ Time to go right up, what

♫ I'm sitting there, put me on the grill

♫ I had to show you what's real

♫ You need another chicken, 'nother shrimp

♫ And then I grill it up

♫ And then I give it to you, pimp

♫ Huh, I know you really, really like that

♫ Sour cream and grease sauce

♫ Yeah, you like that

♫ He had to sop it up

♫ Right off the fingers though

♫ I think that's eight bars

♫ Yep, so it's time to go

- [Video Game Announcer] KO.

- That's why he who he is.

(laughs)

That's why he's famous on the 'Gram.

Keith is all about the we, instead of just me.

When he could be looking out for just himself,

he's bringing together a crew of south LA food slingers

calling themselves The Foodminati.

And they're killing the game together.

What's The Foodminati about?

- It's being 100, you gotta be 100, period.

If you not 100, then you're not in.

- There was one point and time, man,

I was gonna give up, you feel me?

'Cause it was a lot going on.

And I called my bro.

And bro told me the realist thing,

he was like, "You know what?

"Smokey, you got something, stick with it."

And him saying that,

it really lit a fire under my tail to say,

you know what, even though I'm broke,

I ain't got no bread, you feel me?

I don't know how I'm gonna make tomorrow work

but I'm gonna make tomorrow work.

- I seen a little video on Facebook

about my man, right here.

Like, 'cause I was following him, Grubby.

At the end of the video, like his last bar,

he was like, "Just get up and do it."

- Stop thinking about it.

Get up and go do it.

- The very next day, after I saw that video,

and I went and bought a flattop

and start selling tacos in Palmdale.

- One thing this dude was saying,

he was like, "Man, keep your foot on the gas."

- [Host] Yes, sir.

- He cool though.

(Keith laughs)

- At the end of the day,

Keith is about the bonds he's made,

his community, and sharing delicious food with friends.

Like Henry Ford once said,

"If everyone is moving forward together,

"then success takes care of itself."

And that's what's good in your hood.

- Boy, yeah!

The Foodminati business, boy!

- So, what's the future of All Flavor No Grease?

- I want the world to know about All Flavor No Grease.

- The whole US is gonna be just

like your neighborhood. - Yeah.

- And you just wanna travel all over the world.

- All over the world, one quesadilla at a time.

- All over the world, one quesadilla at a time, baby.

(Keith laughs)

- [Announcer] Pull it up on the ocho.

All Flavor's finest.

Biblical and Historical Examples of Fasting - Duration: 16:42.

Well this is the third video I'm doing on fasting, and as I start this video

perhaps I should begin with a confession. For the vast majority of my Christian

life, I have neglected the spiritual discipline of fasting. And as with anyone

who has read through or studied the Scriptures, I of course was well aware of

the numerous references to the discipline of fasting, but never

seriously considered putting it into practice. And thus as I speak with you

during this Lenten season, I do so as a novice. I fully admit it - I am a novice.

A novice committed to fasting as a normal part of my spiritual journey, but

a novice nonetheless. So in considering the subject of fasting from food, I

cannot help but think of one of the most wicked cities of antiquity. You probably

know what I'm talking about. The wickedness of this city was so

pronounced, it had become a stench in the nostrils of Almighty God. And therefore

God commissioned the prophet Jonah to go to Nineveh. I love to talk about Nineveh

as the diamond of Assyria, embedded in the golden arc of the Fertile Crescent,

midway between the Mediterranean and the Caspian Sea - that's how I put it my

book "Has God Spoken". And there he proclaimed that the great city would be

overthrown. I mean utterly destroyed. And in sober

response, the Ninevites declared a fast. And all of them - all of them from the

greatest to the least put on sackcloth. Imagine - imagine a prostituted pagan city

fasting in sackcloth and ashes. And when God saw what they did and how they

had turned from their evil ways, he had compassion,

and he did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened. And of

course, the great Assyrian city is not alone. Many nations throughout history

have fasted and prayed for the mercy of God. Well, all we have to do is think about

America. Hard to imagine, but America is one of them. In the midst of civil war -

think about it. You probably know the story. Abraham

Lincoln called on all Americans to participate in a national day of

humiliation, fasting in prayer. I want to read what he had to say in this regard. I

probably should have it memorized, but I don't. Abraham Lincoln said this: "We have

grown in numbers and wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we

have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in

peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us. And," said Lincoln, "we have

vainly imagined in the deceitfulness of our hearts that all of these blessings

were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated

with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel that necessity

of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God who made us. And

therefore," said Lincoln, "it behooves us to humble ourselves before the offended

power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for forgiveness." And that is what

happened. On April 30th, 1863, the American people in compliance with the request of

the Senate, along with the proclamation of President Lincoln abstained from

their ordinary secular pursuits. They humbled themselves. They devoted

themselves to fasting in prayer for the restoration of a divided country. Such days

the National fasting find precedent of course in Scripture. If they didn't I

wouldn't be talking about it. Twelve centuries - think about it - twelve centuries

before Christ, Samuel, the last judge of Israel, assembled the entire nation of

Israel for a national day of fasting. And there they-- well, they poured out water

upon the earth, and they begged the Lord to forgive their idolatry and wash away

their sins. Or think about the days of Nehemiah. In those days the seed of

Israel separated themselves in the sanctuary. They renounced their hedonism.

And they fasted in sack cloth and with dust on their heads. I think of

another example: Joel. Joel, if you read the book, likens the invasion of foreign

hordes that plunder Jerusalem and left her desolate to an apocalyptic army of

locusts. And he likewise consecrated a sacred fast in Jerusalem. And there,

perhaps you recall, the people - they begged the Lord to forgive their

iniquities, and they did so with fasting, with weeping, with mourning.

And then there's the most exceptional fasting account in the whole of the Old

Testament. This took place at the time of the Exodus. And this wasn't an ordinary

fast. This was an extraordinary fast. A fast from food and water for 40 days and

40 nights, and not just once but on three separate

occasions and over a relatively short period of time. Think about it. This was a

total of 120 days and nights without food and water. Even more

amazing is that one fasting was already in the 80th year of life. I'm talking of

course about Moses. The fast of Moses, who climbed to the top of Mount Sinai, and

then was absorbed into the cloud of God's glory. There he experienced God as the

archetypal source of life and living... on the mountaintop.

Moses was permitted to experientially know that man shall not live by bread

alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. He was not kept

alive by bread or water, but by being interpenetrated by

uncreated energy. A life source not physical, but manifestly divine in origin.

Had Moses not participated in the divine nature, as we read in Peter, he would most

certainly have died. You know humans can abstain from food for forty days, but not

from water. Within a week's time, death becomes unavoidable. And yet Moses did

not die. Nor did Moses grow weary. After forty days and forty nights without food

and water, he traversed Mount Sinai from its top all the way to its bottom, and he

watched in horror as the children of Israel had engorged themselves with

food and drink, and even worse they worshipped the golden calf. And so, with

supernatural energy, Moses ground the detestable idol into dust and then

he fell prostrate before the Lord for yet another forty days and forty nights

during which he ate no bread and drank no water. And on top of all of that, he

ascended Mount Sinai fasting yet another forty days and forty nights. When he came

down from Mount Sinai, his face quite literally glowed with the glory of the

Lord. Now this sort of fasting is of course miraculous - not in the sense of a

momentary disruption of natural law but rather in the sense of the divine

disclosure of another reality. Moses, as it were, had stepped through

the Wardrobe into Narnia. He had encountered a world in which the

ingestion of food and water was-- it was superfluous. And Moses was not alone.

Elijah, the prototypical prophet, likewise fasted forty days and forty nights and

thereafter he too experienced the graces of God. Not in a cloud of glory nor in a

fiery vision, but in the sound-- remember? He heard the sound of a gentle breeze.

You can read about it in I think 1 Kings chapter 19. And Jesus likewise

abstained from food as the new Moses leading us into a better covenant, he

fasted 40 days and 40 nights in the wilderness. Israel murmured against God

in the midst of wilderness manna. Immanuel - he did not. He cherished the

manna from heaven more than life itself. His rebuke of Satan says it all. Man

shall not live by bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth

of God. The normal human mode of existence

depends on ingestion, on digestion, on metabolism. We metabolize food and water.

But as Jesus makes plain, there's an alternative energy supply. This he

referred to when he spoke to the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. Remember

when Jesus said whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever

drinks of the water that I give to him will never thirst. Shortly thereafter the

disciples urged him. They said, "Rabbi, eat!" But then he said to them, "I have food to eat

of which you do not know." Well this was the way of the master. He would

communicate spiritual realities by means of earthly, empirically, perceptible

realities, which might well be described as living metaphors. The disciples

understood food and water. Jesus wanted them to understand nourishment on a

completely different plane - a higher plane. They were acquainted with the

energy that is derived from bios - from food. Jesus acquainted them with the

energy that comes from the Father - zoetic energy. The disciples gained a glimpse of

this otherworldly reality on the mountain of Transfiguration. Remember

Peter, James, and John - they were witness to a dazzling display of uncreated

energy the face of the Lord shone like the Sun his clothes became as white as

the light. Moses and Elijah were there as well. They themselves had experienced

divine energy during their times of fasting, and they appeared as the

disciples were enveloped in a bright cloud.

They experienced the ultimate lawgiver, the archetypal prophet in glorious

splendor. They were eyewitnesses to the majesty of the one who fulfilled the law

and the prophets. And they - well they themselves were immersed in the bright

cloud of God's presence. Peter, James, and John were well aware that Moses and

Elijah, after fasting forty days and forty nights, had encountered a partial

disclosure of the Dunamis - the dynamite underlying the created order. But what

they experienced on the Mount of Transfiguration was even more profound.

They were eyewitnesses - eye witnesses to the transfigured majesty of the one who

like Moses and Elijah had fasted from food and feasted on a far more

substantial reality. Jesus had previously explained the dynamics of energy on a

higher plane. On Mount Sinai, they experienced it as well. This then, is the

primary purpose of fasting. It is to experience God as the source, as the

substance of life that is truly life. To taste the heavenly manna. To drink divine

water, so as to never thirst again. It is to recognize union with Christ as

the apex of human existence. You know, Jesus himself had some words

about this. We all, like Jesus, with unveiled faces beholding

as in a mirror the glory of the Lord are being transformed into the same image

from glory to glory just as the Spirit of the Lord. As we behold him, as we

behold him we become-- well, we become what we are destined to be. Christ-ians.

growing in His image being transformed into his likeness. During this Lenten

season I hope, I pray, that even if it is in spurts, you'll recognize that there is

an energy that you can partake of that dwarfs human energy. The stomach no

longer your god. Your God becoming more real to you than the very flesh upon

your bones. And again fasting is such an incredible doorway into experiencing

the reality of Christ that I just hope and pray you don't miss out on it.

4 OTHER Ways You Can Play With Your Kong Dog Toy - Duration: 4:26.

- We all knows that Kong makes a great chew toy

for your pet.

You know, this funny shaped rubber object

is a great pastime for your dog.

But I'm going to tell you today about the four other things

that you can do with your Kong chew toy.

I'm Ken Steepe, and welcome back to McCann Dogs.

(guitar strums)

(high-pitched bark)

Now if this is the first time on the channel

and you consider your dog a family member,

then make sure you hit that subscribe button.

We publish new videos every single week

to help you spend some quality time with your

four-legged family member.

Now I mentioned off the top that I've got

four other uses for your Kong toy.

And the first one is a pretty straightforward one,

you may have heard it before.

But that's putting food inside of your Kong.

Now we've come up with a few different recipes

for Kong stuffing that we've posted in videos before,

and I'll post a link to it right here.

But that's the first other use.

I'm going to get to three more that are way cooler.

So the next game that we're going to talk about

follows putting in food inside of it.

And today I'm going to show you with one of our dogs,

Grand Slam, but you can food food inside of your Kong

and then you're going to hide it somewhere

around the house.

(intense music)

Now once I've hidden food inside the Kong,

we're just going to go around and we're going

to try and find it, and Slam's going to sniff

his way around the house,

and I'm going to help him as he searches around

for that Kong.

And once he's discovered it, I'm going to make

a really big deal.

And his real payout is not only playing with the Kong

and my reaction to it, but he gets to have

whatever the treat is that's inside.

Now the next one is almost playing a bit

of a shell game with your dog.

If you've got more than one Kong,

then this is a really fun game that you can play.

Now I'm just going to place a few pieces of kibble

underneath one of the Kong's here,

and I'm going to line them up in a row,

and I'm actually going to show you this game

with Hippy Shake, our toy poodle.

But I'm going to introduce Hippy to these three Kongs,

and she's going to sniff around a little bit.

And when she indicates on whichever Kong

she thinks the food is under, then I'm going

to reveal the food and make a big deal of it.

Now the next thing we're going to do

is great for you guys who don't have a super

toy-motivated dog.

It's going to animate this Kong toy,

but it's also going to create an engaging game

that you can play with your dog.

First, we're going to just find a piece of rope,

maybe a narrow piece of rope or if you've got

maybe some cutout material of some kind

that's thin enough to pass through the hole

on the top of this Kong.

You're going to pass it through.

And then we're going to find something like a washer,

or something we can tie off so that the rope

doesn't actually pull back through the Kong.

Then we're just going to tie off the two ends.

Now once you've got that securely tied,

you're just going to slide that washer

back through the bottom hole of the Kong.

Once it's secured, now you've got a toy

that you can animate.

You can make it really exciting,

dragging it around on the ground

until you're dog's really excited about it.

And when they've got that toy,

when they've got that Kong, you can turn it

into a bit of a tug game.

And for you guys that have that dog

that doesn't love toys, make sure you make it

exciting for them.

Make sure you're zooming that Kong around on the ground,

and once they've got it, make a really big deal.

Have lots of fun with them.

The next thing we're going to do with this Kong

is like a retrieve.

We're going to turn the Kong into a retrieve toy.

So we're going to throw that toy out,

and the great thing about the Kong is

it's such an unusual shape that, as it bounces around,

it can create an erratic motion and can really

activate your dog's chase drive.

Now if you have a dog that doesn't really love

to bring this Kong all the way back,

I've got a video for you.

We posted a video not that long ago

about teaching your dog to bring a ball

all the way back to your hand,

so in that video, you're going to show your dog

how to bring that toy all the way back to you.

Queer women artists in the Harlem Renaissance | #LGBTHM - Duration: 13:35.

In honour of LGBT History Month in the UK I'd like to talk about some amazing

queer Harlem Renaissance artists. I've just written an essay on some of these

people and I found it so fascinating, so I really wanted to talk about it.

Also, even within the progressiveness of queer studies, women, and particularly women of

colour, tend to be forgotten, so today I'd like to focus on particularly queer

female artists. Therefore I am by no means going to be covering everything;

as the renowned Harlem scholar Henry Louis Gates once said, "the Harlem Renaissance

was surely as gay as it was black" so there is a lot out there. This is

designed to just give you a bit of a flavour of some of the experimental and

huge creative output of the Harlem Renaissance. So you might be sitting

there going, hang on Izzy, what is the Harlem

Renaissance?! Well it was a period in the 20s and 30s in Harlem in New York where

black artists started creating all sorts of experimental art, particularly

literature, and they also experienced a surge in popularity from both black and

white audiences. In my previous video on my favourite black writers I actually

named two Harlem artists, Jean Toomer and George Schuyler. Now I don't have time to go

into this fully but before I get into the literature it's worthwhile

understanding the two major artistic ideologies during this time.

One was known as uplift culture and was spearheaded by W.E.B. Du Bois. This was the

idea that art should be propaganda for racial issues.

It was idealistic and the idea was that african-american art should always be political.

The opposing view was supported by Langston Hughes. rather than

idolising the African American, this school of thought wanted to have a

gritty complexity to the depictions of black life, regardless if it showed them

as depraved. And it is worth noting as well that there was a lot of tension

between these two philosophies. The other bit of context that you need to know is

the law, and to summarise - being queer was just very much not allowed.

Homosexuality between men was illegal according to sodomy laws, and

laws about promiscuity and indecency could be used against lesbians.

Also, transvestitism was illegal and it was possible to be arrested on the street

for it. However, Harlem was a hub of experimentation and relative freedom. It

was infamous for its prohibited drinking, thriving nightlife and it was considered

a safe zone compared to lower Manhattan because sexuality was less

rigidly policed. There were huge drag balls at Hamilton Lodge, there were

buffet flats where you could pay to watch people have sex, and the were rent parties

with uncensored theatrical performances. Basically, this really was a

place for artistic, gender, and sexual experimentation. That said,

even in Harlem there were still fines and prison sentences for disorderly

conduct, so even though it was a lot safer, the threat of the law was still

always there. 'Strange Brother' by Blair Niles is a really good book for

understanding the sort of weirdly experimental yet at the same time

constricted atmosphere in Harlem at this time. One of the two main characters is a

gay man, and the book also depicts how people who were sexual or gender

"deviants" were treated by the law. Given that homosexuality was still illegal

when this book was written, it is remarkable how open it is about talking

about philosophies of gender and sexuality and in portraying Mark as a

normal, functioning, intelligent man just with a slight difference. For this time

that really was quite revolutionary. That said, if you do want to check this book

out and read it, I would give a warning for a lot of internalised homophobia.

In 'Strange Brother', a major catalyst for the characters' encounters with their

sexuality is the Harlem blues. Homosexuality was far from being a

secret in the blues bars of Harlem. If you've been wondering what this song has

been: *solo piano blues plays* This is James P Johnson's recording of 'The Dream'

It was also known as The Bull-dyker's Dream, Bull-Dagger's Dream, The Diggah's Dream;

basically it was a really popular tune played by a lot of artists and according

to Willie "the lion" Smith, was an anthem dedicated to lesbians. It might even be

where the term "Dyke" comes from. Songs about lesbians were not uncommon.

George Hanna's 'Boy in the Boat' is basically one long innuendo for oral sex,

and includes the line *Sings: sent them over there, those Germans to hunt. That the women at home can try all the new stunts*.

And then there's Memphis Willie B's 'Bad Girl Blues' in which he complains *Sings: Women loving each other, and they don't thinking about no men*

Basically, men complaining about lesbians not having sex with them... nothing changes.

But that is not to say that women didn't write their own songs. Bessie Smith was quite

well known for having relations with both men and women and Ma Rainey was

pretty damn notorious for being a lesbian. In fact, in 1925 Bessie Smith and

Ma Rainey were found naked with a couple of other women in their home and Ma Rainey

was arrested for hosting an indecent party. But did that stop her? oh hell no

In 1928 she recorded 'Prove it on Me Blues' in which she sings: *they say I do it, ain't nobody caught me, sure got to prove it on me*

I absolutely adore this song so much I mean check out how relatable this line

is it's a testament to the remarkably subversive culture of Harlan that Marv

aney released this song in 1928 which is the same year that Radcliffe halls the

Well of loneliness was judged to be obscene just for a couple of really

brief references to lesbian sex Morini wasn't the only out lesbian in

Harlem GLaDOS Bentley became a legend for her

raucous sexualized parodies of popular songs and how incredible blues voice she

wore men's clothes was well known for her masculine features and even changed

her name to Bobby Minton so that she could get married to a woman sadly we

don't have many recordings of her songs but she has been mythologized and

described in a lot of literature at the time including strange brother and also

in texts by Langston Hughes and Carl Van Vechten

however in 1952 she wrote an article for Ebony called I am a woman again in this

she describes her depraved inverted past and how she is now happily married to a

man thanks to female hormone treatments this is a really odd article for various

reasons it's almost a character of womanhood it shows her you know making

dinner for her husband doing the dishes for a husband picking out jewelry for

her husband and then it never quite commits to saying that homosexuality is

an abnormality it just says what society calls normal either way this article

must be taken with a pinch of salt because she wrote it during the McCarthy

era so it's very likely that she felt the need to publish it to repair her

reputation but it wasn't just the daring and promiscuous blues singers who were

openly queer there was lots of literature at the time as well I've

already mentioned strange brother and another famously daring depiction of

bisexuality in polyamory is Richard Bruce Nugent's smoke lilies and Jade

which was a short story published in the magazine fire but to return to queer

women quite a few short story fictions had a queer subtext to them one example

is nella last passing which is about two black women

who can pass for white and their different approaches to the privileges

this gives them on the surface it doesn't seem to have much to do with

queerness but certainly in the relationship between the two women could

raise a few eyebrows but furthermore parallels were often drawn between race

and queerness in terms of passing and how you can secretly integrate into a

society in which you don't quite belong the story addresses themes of a fluid

identity that on the surface pertains to racial issues but can also definitely be

read with a queer reading but the person we mainly want to talk about is Angelina

weld grim que not to be confused with the white abolitionist Angelina Graham k

world who was her aunt grim k wrote plays short fiction and poetry and he

was best known for her treatment of domestic race issues for example her

acclaimed play Rachel explored the problems of motherhood when raising a

black child in a racist world but despite often looking at themes of

motherhood grim K was undoubtedly gay in a letter that she wrote to Mamie Bell in

1896 she asked her to be her wife saying Oh

Mamie if you only knew how my heart beats when I think of you and it yearns

and pants to gaze if only for one second upon your lovely face signed your

passionate lover green-keyes poetry is characterized by a hushed sadness

longing and frustration because she has a had a lot of difficulties with being

open about her lesbianism especially because of the criticisms from her

father therefore not much of grim k's queer poetry is published however in

some of the ones that she did publish there are a sort of subtle code for

example in her acclaimed poem el beso published in 1909 she simply elides the

femininity of the speaker and the subject Twilight and you quiet the Stars

snare of the shine of your teeth your provocative laughter the gloom of your

hair lure of you eye and lip yearning yearning langa surrender

your mouth and madness madness tremulous breathless flaming the space of a sigh

then awakening remembrance pain regret your sobbing and again quiet the Stars

Twilight and you in other poems she doesn't cover up the female persona but

instead codes the queer desire this is seen in a Mona Lisa which is undoubtedly

addressed to a woman but her wish to fall into the woman's eyes and sink down

and down and down and deeply drown carefully implies something more than

just a platonic friendship and or admiration

her unpublished poetry is unsurprisingly even bolder in my shrine the speaker

adopts a male persona and uses male poetic conventions in order to

legitimize her desire for another woman and then finally I'm going to leave you

from with an excerpt from her unpublished poem Rosabelle which

perfectly illustrates her wish to express her desire but her fear to do so

leaves that whisper whisper ever listen listen prey birds that twitter twitter

softly do not say mean a wins that breathe about upon her lines I do not

dare whisper Twitter breathe unto her that I find her fair tell her white gold

red my love is and for her for her the Harlem Renaissance drew to a sort of

close in the 1940s when white audiences lost interest in the novelty of African

art but the culture has certainly left its legacy the queer culture of drag

balls and coded language in songs and literature as still go on to this day

contemporary gay blues singers such as gay attackable ola gwen avery and faith

nolan have all drawn directly from the songs and identity of Bessie Smith

mulraney and Gladys Bentley quim K and other queer women's poetry wasn't

published very often so it's hard to say that

there was a direct influence but certainly there was a remarkable

similarity to the themes and styles of their poetry to more modern poets such

as Audrey Lorde and Adrienne Rich so that is everything I wanted to talk

about today in the description below I have left a playlist of all the songs

that I mentioned and some others that you can check out and I'm also going to

give lots of details about various books and websites you can look at for more

information whether or not you've come across these people before I would love

to hear what you think it's amazing how much was produced during this time and

how experimental and interesting it all is so yeah let me find out what you find

what you like what you find interesting thank you very much for watching and

good bye

Is VERO The New Instagram & Facebook? - Duration: 3:00.

Everyone is talking about a new app called Vero, that is being dubbed the new Instagram

and Facebook.

So what makes vero so special?

I'll fill you in here on IO.

What is good, this is inform overload where we talk about viral internet trends and news.

I'm Charlotte Dobre.

Instagram and Facebook are becoming obsolete, as they continue to do things that go against

what their users want.

Instagram used to have this wonderful chronological timeline, and now sometimes you wont see posts

all together.

And Facebook is causing a lot of trust issues over the fake news issue, where the algorithm

is putting fake headlines at the top of the trending tab.

Both Facebook and Instagram are becoming havens for ads, many of them which turn out to be

scams.

So what's the solution?

If Facebook and Instagram wont listen to their users, then maybe a new social media app should

take their place.

Vero is one of the top downloads on the app store after it has promised to rival Instagram

and Facebook and not to make the same mistakes.

Vero allows users to share music, music, links, photos and places, and promises a social media

experience that mirrors real life.

Vero means truth.

And that's exactly what they promise.

The people behind Vero say that they will keep the app ad free, rule out data mining

and not change algorithms.

Posts will be in chronological order, which is something that everyone misses dearly on

Instagram.

Another plus to Vero is that it features tailored lists.

You can separate your friends by close friends, friends, acquaintances and followers.

The categories each have different security settings where they can only see certain posts,

and you will also only see some of theirs.

The app is actually a few years old, it was co-founded in 2015 by Ayman Hariri.

All of this sounds super fine and good and all, but there are also some things you should

know about Vero.

Yes, there are no ads, but the app needs to make money somehow.

First of all, the app is free to download, but you're going to have to pay an annual

fee in order to use the app.

For now, the first million downloads are free.

There were actually so many people downloading the app recently that it couldn't handle

the traffic.

Users were experiencing technical difficulties.

the app only has a 2.1 star rating on the apple app store and 2.5 on play store.

So guys, have you downloaded Vero?

What do you think?

Let me know, but for now I'm going to respond to some comments.
