What Really Happened To Gene Hackman? - Duration: 4:16.
For nearly five decades, Gene Hackman was a staple of American cinema.
During that time, the San Bernardino-born actor won four Golden Globes, two BAFTAs,
and two Academy Awards while starring in classic films like Hoosiers, Unforgiven, and Get Shorty,
to name just a very few.
Since the early 2000s, however, we haven't seen or heard much from the accomplished actor
and all-American tough guy.
So what's Hackman been up to?
Retired
First and foremost, Hackman is retired — which explains why we haven't seen much of the guy
lately.
His last role was in the 2004 romantic comedy Welcome to Mooseport, in which he acted alongside
sitcom star Ray Romano.
After that, Hackman called it quits, but he didn't really make a big deal out of it.
He told Reuters,
"I'm not going to act any longer.
I've been told not to say that over the last few years, in case some real wonderful part
comes up, but I really don't want to do it any longer."
"Absolutely and without discussion!"
Novelist
Just because Hackman retired from acting doesn't mean he's not working.
In fact, he's actually penned quite a few novels.
In addition to co-writing three works of historical fiction, Hackman has also released two solo
efforts: Old West revenge story Payback at Morning Peak and police thriller Pursuit.
These days, Hackman greatly prefers writing to acting.
He told Reuters,
"I like the loneliness of it, actually.
It's similar in some ways to acting, but it's more private, and I feel like I have more
control over what I'm trying to say and do."
Painter
In addition to acting and writing novels, Hackman's other artistic pursuits include
painting — and he's pretty darn good at it.
The accomplished actor actually studied art at the Art Students League of New York as
a young man.
"I thought maybe I could feed myself as an artist while I was waiting to be an actor"
"I'm doing something almost all the time, drawing or painting."
He's been creating art ever since, but rarely shows what he calls his, quote, "unshowable"
work to the public.
He has, however, donated some artwork to charitable causes.
No grandpa roles
There's one pretty big reason why we'll likely never see Hackman come out of retirement for
another big-screen role: the aging actor simply isn't interested in playing older characters.
According to ContactMusic, Hackman said,
"At my age, they would have me playing grandfathers and great grandfathers.
That's not a heck of a lot of fun."
Nobody puts Hackman in a box.
Behind the scenes
Perhaps the main reason Hackman is happy to be done with showbiz is that he really doesn't
miss all of the behind-the-scenes nonsense that comes with the job.
He told ContactMusic,
"I don't miss the business.
I miss the process of being on-set with actors when things get cooking.
But there's so much crapola in order to get there.
It's just too painful."
When you've accomplished all that Hackman has, there's really no reason to take anyone
else's "crapola."
"If he doesn't like it, then that's his problem."
An important narration
Although Hackman doesn't lend his physical presence to the screen anymore, he's not afraid
to lend his voice to worthwhile projects.
Hackman sort of came back from retirement to narrate 2016's The Unknown Flag Raiser
of Iwo Jima, a one-hour documentary aiming to correct the misidentification of one soldier
in Joe Rosenthal's famous World War 2 photograph.
"The picture conceals an extraordinary case of mistaken identity."
Hackman himself dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to enlist in the Marine Corps,
where he served as a field radio operator for over four years.
"He's a ballsy little bastard isn't he?"
Will he act again?
Well, probably not.
Hackman seems quite satisfied with the arc of his award-filled career.
Speaking of which, the actor seems to have distanced himself so much from that part of
his life, he may not even know where his awards are.
He told GQ,
"I don't have any memorabilia around the house.
There isn't any movie stuff except a poster downstairs next to the pool table of Errol
Flynn from Dawn Patrol.
I'm not a sentimental guy."
Still, there is one role that could possibly entice Hackman out of retirement.
He explained,
"I like Edmond in The Count of Monte Cristo.
[...] Having been able to keep that terrible vengeance in his soul for so many years and
then carrying out what he thought were justified events in the end.
I like that as a novel."

Like many of his supporters, President Trump is frustrated with his Attorney General Jeff
Sessions.
Trump has expressed frustration over the fact that AG Sessions recused himself from the
entire Russia witch-hunt, and the President went so far as to say, had he known Sessions
would recuse himself, he'd have picked a different attorney general.
President Trump reiterated that sentiment in a tweet to Trey Gowdy on Wednesday, saying
he wishes he had picked a different AG.
At this point, if Sessions cares about the country and our America First movement, he
should step down.

President Trump on Wednesday expressed his frustration again with Attorney General Jeff
Sessions' recusal in the Russia investigation.
Mr. Trump's tweet quoted Rep. Trey Gowdy, South Carolina Republican, who was interviewed
on "CBS This Morning" earlier on Wednesday.
The president added that he wishes he'd picked a different attorney general.

The last three days have been a wild ride for Roseanne Barr and America in general.
She created a fiery whirlwind of people being upset on social media that is still raging.
Roseanne was fired for a tweet she made against Valerie Jarrett, that is considered racist.
ABC canned her by the end of the day, even though Barr apologized and begged they not
cancel her show.
A massive boycott of ABC is now underway and more than 100,000 people, have signed a petition
for a different network to pick up her show.
The petition was posted with an initial goal of 50,000 signatures, but in just over 48
hours, they more than doubled that amount.
In fact, they are closing in on 110,000 signatures as I write this.
Considering the firestorm others have created out there with vile tweets, such as Joy Reid
and Samantha Bee, it is not far-fetched to think that some other network like Fox would
pick the show up.
It broke all the records for viewership and would be a money maker.
But so far, none have suggested it.
If ABC doesn't want the show in one form or another, then some other network should,
because Roseanne's audience is still screaming for more.
It appeals to the common man and was one of the few on television, that Americans can
actually relate to anymore.
"Last Man Standing" with Tim Allen was picked up by Fox, and will start their seventh
season this fall after being axed by ABC.
The show was too conservative for the network even though it was their second biggest draw.
But after fans overwhelmingly demanded it is brought back, Fox stepped up and the show
will once again be a huge hit and an even bigger money maker.
One wonders if Fox is tempted by Roseanne as well.
You don't have to condone what Roseanne said to watch the show, or to see it for the
hit it is.
Both Joy Reid and Samantha Bee apologized for saying things equally as bad and they
were forgiven.
Perhaps Roseanne should be afforded the same grace.
Americans are disgusted by the double standard they see playing out with these TV personalities.
The only difference Between Roseanne and Reid and Bee, is Roseanne went after Obama's
consigliere Valerie Jarrett.
Reid went after many on both sides, and Bee went after Ivanka and President Trump.
So, the message being sent is that it's okay to savage those on one side, but not
the other.
It was pointed out: "We're not necessarily defending Roseanne's comments, but we ARE
pointing out a disgusting double standard.
ABC allows the ladies of The View to call Christians "mentally ill", but they fired
Roseanne at the first sign of controversy.
Not only that, but ABC also employs Jimmy Kimmel, who openly mocks our First Lady's
accent.
Somehow, the liberals on the network never suffer the consequences, but CONSERVATIVES
DO."
TBS has removed Samantha Bee's entire offensive "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee's" episode,
which featured comments by the host who called Ivanka Trump a "feckless c**t," according
to The Wrap.
But she still has a job.
Joy Reid apologized over and over today, yet she still has a show at MSNBC.
If ABC wants to commit media s*****e let them, but the witch hunt over free speech needs
to end.
You don't have to like what someone says.
But if they do it on their own time, they should get a warning, not tanked for it.
Unless they really aren't sorry and will just do it again like Samantha Bee does.
Immediately after apologizing to Ivanka, she went to an awards ceremony honoring her and
said that one word shouldn't make everyone freak out.
That the subject was Trump and illegal immigration and that is what should be focused on.
Sorry, but not sorry was the message there.
Joy Reid's show on MSNBC may not last as old hateful blog posts just keep on surfacing.
At first she said she was hacked and when that didn't work she sort of admitted doing
them.
But even MSNBC has limits on all this bad publicity.
As for Samantha Bee, she may get sacked for her ratings and not her lousy language.
Her viewership over the last year has cratered.
I actually think she thought going after Ivanka this way would get her more attention.
It did, just not the kind she wanted.
If just one petition within a couple of days can get over 100,000 signatures to bring Roseanne
back, then I'll bet you some network out there is considering it.

Sights Unseen: Altered States and the Expansion of Awareness.

Growing up in the rural countryside of Western North Carolina, it�s not uncommon to see
a variety of different kinds of wildlife.
Deer, wild turkeys, black bear, and a host of other creatures that are common only to
those who look for them abound, and yet are often overlooked by those whose eyes aren�t
trained to spot them along roadways, at the edges of forests, and around farmland where
food for many of these animals grows in abundance.
Once I reached my teenage years, I recall being amused at how many of my friends seemed
unaware of these animals that typically were all around us at any given time.
As we�d go careening off down a country road somewhere, I was always the one that
would spot a skittish doe as she foraged along the edge of the treeline nearby.
Other times, I would chuckle at the flocks of turkeys that could be seen flapping about
in cornfields in broad daylight of mid-afternoon.
What was often funnier to me, however, was that my friends almost never saw these animals.
�You mean to tell me you didn�t see that turkey we just drove past?� I might remark
something along these lines about one of the stray hens my friends in the car would always
miss.
Altogether, it seemed evident to me from a fairly early age that there were a lot of
things in the world that, in order to be seen, really had to have somebody that was willing
to look for them.
If we apply this manner of thinking to other subjects, it might stand to reason that there
are a variety of things about our world, and perhaps reality in general, which require
more active participation in order to be observed.
Recently, a friend and listener of my podcast, The Gralien Report, wrote in with a story
along these lines, in which he felt that experimentation over the years with psilocybin�the active
hallucinogen within �magic mushrooms��had expanded his awareness of the world in such
a way that he and his friends who had done the same experienced things in reality which
others did not.
James, the listener in question, told me a story about an unusual experience that occurred
during a camping trip many years ago with his friend, who he calls �Jack.� While
gathering firewood in preparation for that night, the two men observed three golden spheres,
which they judged to each be roughly the size of a softball, hovering in the sky in a triangular
formation.
Up until that time, neither of the men had ever observed anything they would liken to
a UFO.
�We stood there for a solid two minutes before we said anything, and the spheres didn�t
budge,� James remembered.
�I had the sensation we were being watched like the spheres knew we were there.
Jack was freaked, but he composed himself and did his best to hide his fear.�
Sometime later, James returned back to the field to look for the spheres, which remained
precisely where they had been earlier, hovering in a perfect triangular formation.
At this point, James felt an overwhelming sensation that he was being watched and began
to grow uneasy.
�Even though this was a time we were experimenting with hallucinogens, we were stone sober when
we spotted the spheres,� James said.
Later that evening, the two men decided that taking a small number of mushrooms might calm
their nerves, which did work up until around the time they went to sleep.
However, after laying down in his tent, James began to feel the same overpowering sensation
of being watched again.
Later that night, he awoke to the sound of footsteps outside his tent, which he recalled
being unmistakably human, or belonging to some other bipedal animal.
�I always wondered if our experimentation with hallucinogens had anything to do with
our sighting that evening, and now with further reading and research, I heavily suspect the
two were connected.� James further noted that after the experience while camping, he
and his friend Jack �never touched mushrooms again.�
It�s anybody�s guess whether the use of mind-expanding substances like this could
make an individual more prone to having experiences that fall outside the ordinary.
Modern science would tell us that such experiences�if occurring while in a state where reality is
augmented (such as the case with hallucinogens)�would inherently make the narrative less reliable.
Alternatively, could it be that some people who have undergone the mind-altering effects
of hallucinogens are in some ways more capable of perceiving unusual things, whether or not
due to a sort of �heightened� or expanded awareness?
Again, the thought comes back to mind of one having more or less experience growing up
around wild animals, and hence possessing a greater ability to spot them in their natural
habitat.
Whether or not one is seeking to have an experience that some might call �paranormal�, there
is at least some degree of precedent for the idea that controlled use of mind-altering
substances can lead to positive changes in a person�s perception of reality.
Studies conducted over the years at John Hopkins University have shown that psilocybin administered
to patients during studies had the capacity to affect their outlook on life, and improve
their attitude, especially when going through periods of stress or doubt.
A general change in attitude or perception, in other words, might indeed have an effect
on one�s experiences in life.
Whether or not such things played a causal role in people�s experiences with unusual
phenomenon (i.e.
UFOs, etc), it could certainly be the case that a person who, after experiencing the
lasting effect of an induced altered state, would have an outlook on reality that is more
open to having such experiences.
The question of whether altered states of consciousness may have a relationship to people�s
experiences with the unexplained has often been raised by researchers�academic and
laymen alike�over the years.
Maybe understanding that relationship, and the potentials it has for teaching us new
things about consciousness, makes it a worthwhile endeavor for future study.

They say things don't really start until a team wins a road game, and the Capitals wasted no time by eking out a 3-2 victory in the desert.
Now the series heads east, where the Capitals will be favored, even if their hottest scorer might miss the game.
Stanley Cup Game 3 Prediction.
Despite Washington stealing a road game, the series odds still favor the Knights.
Vegas is -133 to raise the Cup, while the Caps are a +113 underdog according to 5Dimes.
But when it comes to Saturday's contest, Washington is favored for the first time in this series.
The Capitals are -123 on the moneyline, but a +240 underdog when giving 1.5 goals.
Again, this is projected to be a tight contest.
Vegas is a slight dog at +115, and a heavy favorite getting 1.
5 goals at -255.
The goal total is once again set at 5.
5, with the over at +105 and the under at -105.
Did this series turn on one save? That's what many were left wondering Wednesday night.
With the score tied at two in the final minutes, Caps goalie Braden Holtby made the save of his life against Alex Tuch.
While that may have closed the door on Las Vegas for Game 2, it wasn't the driving force that propelled Washington to victory.
After the game, multiple people stated that the injury to Evgeny Kuznetsov was a unifying force for the team.
"That really galvanized us," said Washington coach Barry Trotz.
"You get an all-in mentality.
I know how resilient this group has been all year.
I think that might be a turning point for us.".
Kuznetsov went down with just over five minutes remaining in the first period of Game 2.
He went directly to the locker room and did not return, and appeared to be holding his left arm.
Instead of folding up, the Capitals responded.
They scored three goals over the next 12:14, stealing any momentum Vegas might have accrued after going up 1-0 and injuring the Caps' leading scorer.

Oshie agreed that the absence could lead to offense from other areas:.
"It'll be a big loss, but as you saw in the Pittsburgh series when Nick went down, sometimes that kind of energizes some other guys to get in there and be able to make some plays.
Despite the narrow loss, the Golden Knights were not without chances.

That includes the point-blank stuff from Holtby, but also includes a 5-on-3 situation in the third period that Vegas let slip through their fingers.

Fleury needs to bounce back in Game 3, and avoid losing his first road start since May 12 in the opening game of the Western Conference finals against Winnipeg.

Vegas is no stranger to winning on the road, and they should have an edge without Kuznetsov.

Bishop Burbidge's Homily for Transitional Diaconate Ordinations 2018 - Duration: 8:57.
This is my first time as a bishop ever to ordain five candidates to the
diaconate within one ceremony. Five is a significant number and certainly the
fruit of God's grace and the prayers of all the faithful throughout the Diocese
of Arlington. In preparation for my homily I was trying to think of an image
that would go with the number five. Providentially someone just recently
informed me that a famous franchise was founded in Arlington: Five Guys.
And that term certainly conveys the familiar, the ordinary five guys. So I
know you're all thinking what does this have to do with an ordination, but I am
sure that these five gentlemen, our five candidates, would be the first to tell
you that, well aware of their god-given gifts and talents, they know themselves
to be very ordinary men with limitations and weaknesses. And having first heard
the call of God, like the Prophet Jeremiah in our first reading, they could
list all the reasons for their unworthiness. But they also heard the
promise of the Lord to the Prophet Jeremiah: Have no fear because I am with
you always to deliver you. And thus these five ordinary men will soon be able to
say "present," in other words, "Here I am Lord" and God will do something
extraordinary with them. Through the imposition of hands and the prayer of
ordination they will receive a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit and will
be forever configured to Jesus Christ at the core of their being the one who will
send them forth as sacramental signs of his presence as deacon and God willing
soon as priests. And as deacons they are to assist me
and my brother priests in the ministry of the altar of the word and of charity.
And dear candidates in order that you might respond to these responsibilities
I would like to highlight for you today two specific mandates. You are to teach
in truth and you are to serve in love. What is the truth/ It is Christ crucified,
the one to whom belongs glory and Dominion forever and ever. You are to
teach the truth of his Gospel and preach that truth in all its beauty without
compromise so that God's holy people will know the freedom and the joy that
only Christ can give. And as you do remember that sound advice of St. Peter
today in the second reading: whoever preaches let it be with the
words of God. And so I strongly encourage you to make sure that your homily
preparation is one of your highest priorities, giving it the study, the time,
and most especially the prayer it requires. You are to serve in love.
Charity and humility are to be at the heart of your ministry as deacons for
you are called to imitate the one who came not to be served but to serve. And
I'm sure that will be reflected as you visit the sick and the elderly and the
homebound as you provide spiritual and material
resources to the poor and vulnerable and most needy and as you seek out those who
feel unloved and maybe even forgotten. And such service and such witness will
proclaim to others the sacredness of all human life and the dignity of each and
every human person. I'm sure by now you might be feeling a bit overwhelmed as
you hear all that is expected of you. But as you listen to Jesus in today's
Gospel it's clear he does not want you to be overwhelmed; he does not want you
to be anxious. Listen to the advice he gave to his disciples as he sent them
forth: take nothing with you that will weigh you down, no extra money bag or
sack or sandal. In other words what he was trying to tell them is travel lightly:
in me you have all that you need. Wasn't that the message of St. Peter today?
Whoever serves let him do so with the strength that God supplies. You know
where to find that strength: you have to be men of prayer and that's why the
Church today enthusiastically receives your promise to be faithful to the
Liturgy of the Hours, the universal prayer of the Church.
She trusts that every day you will spend quiet time with the Lord
Find your strength in the Holy Eucharist as you entrust yourself to the care of
our Blessed Mother as you rely on the help of the Saints on whose assistance
we will call upon soon as we sing the Litany. With these graces
you have all that you need to remain ever true to your promises of respect
and obedience and your commitment to the celibate state so that you will always
serve God with an undivided heart. This is a day of great rejoicing for the
Diocese of Arlington and for the entire Church. How blessed are you to be
surrounded with such fervent prayer and deep affection, gifts that will continue
to accompany you. With all gathered, we ask Almighty God to bless you with his
amazing graces so that as you go forth you will always teach in truth and
serve in love, relying on the strength that our Lord Jesus supplies, the one to
whom glory and Dominion belong, forever and ever. Amen.
