Here we are guys, a year is passed since GH5 has been released, this very January GH5S was launched.
Let's unbox the GH5S. This will be a very short review,
it will not be detailed as those that you might found on other YouTube channels, but it will mostly focus
on GH5S advantages and disadvantages compared to those of the GH5. There will be
tests that will show positive and negative aspects of both models,
and thus, this review is going to be a guide to help you decide which one you should choose, which is
the best choice according to your needs. I had the opportunity to own them both,
to try them both, to use them both
but let's unbox the GH5S packaging right now,
later on I will explain you everything.
Well, the box looks like that of the GH5's one, let's open it,
you will find instruction manuals of the new GH5S, let's keep them aside,
let's open this up, inside there is the DC-GH5S body, as you may see
there is nothing different from the previous version,
actually, the box looks exactly the same.
Let's open it and here we have the camera body, beautiful, with the scarlet logo and the
rec button, new, all scarlet, as the S under the letters GH5.
Here we have the neck strap to hang it around your neck,
cables:
computer cable, well you know, the usual cables that are always included
in every Panasonic packaging; they made a new
battery charger, I see, smaller, and more portable
than the previous one.
Hence, it seems that Panasonic really decided to make its customers
unhappy. After the launch of GH5,
as a matter of fact, presenting so soon an alternative model, much more recommended
to videomakers, in my opinion, it was like a hit below the belt,
especially for those who will buy the GH5,
will realize that their camera is incomplete. I am talking about the lack of
the long awaited stabilizer that makes the GH5
so amazing a model for a lot of videomakers, because it allowed
to use the GH5, and it allows it even now, since it is still in
production and really appreciated by people, even without a steadicam,
a gimbal, or simple without a tripod, in fact easily holding
the camera, with just a small post-production stabilization,
it was possible to have a completely fixed image indeed. Using the GH5S
this is not possible anymore. This ia an advantage of the Gh5, which GH5S lacks
and it is an advantage that, in my humble opinion, may be seen as the main difference
between these two models, one is for those who make videos, who
use the camera always with
a gimbal, with a steadicam, with sliders or else,
with tools, then, that help the shooting to be smoother, while the GH5 is recommended
more for people that travel, for those who do not want to miss a single chance to shoot in every situation they come across.
In my opinion, this is the main point on which people should focus
when they have to choose between these two models. For using the GH5 you are able
to get awesome pictures in any situation, to say, you find yourself
in front of a breath-taking view, a circumstance that lasts few seconds,
you just need to hold it in your hand, turn it on, aim, focus and start
shooting. Using the Gh5S, as I will show you in a little while, without
a mechanic stabilitazion your videos will be useless, holding the
camera in your bare hands will give you images that you will not be able to use
almost in 90 per cent of cases, thus it is a camera much more recommended to
those who make videos, for those who do it in a professional way. For those who travel,
for those who are loking for a "shoot-ready" camera to carry around, for you,
the GH5S is not a good choice at all.
Another lack is about 6K, the GH5S is not anymore able
to shoot 6K, because, being provided with a sensor of whose pixel are larger
but lesser, it is able to control light better, above all in lowlight
conditions, but it gives back a less detailed
image, at least on paper. Reguarding 4K video,
the difference is slight, let's say that the GH5 advantage is,
in the daytime, with good lightning, that you can shoot 6K
and then you may downsize the video in order to get video files, objectively,
much more detaliled, much more beautiful. The difference is very small, looking at those
few photos I made, I noticed it, few, few, videos, sorry, i would gladly make
a deeper comparison, and I will do it in my next video,
for sure, but since its arrival, I live in Veneto region and it has been
a week of fog, thus I was not able to make any good
video outside, in the daytime and
then I will make another video with a deeper analysis.
Thus I did not make any test, here in my studio, for the simple
reason that there are a lot of studio-test-videos online, but mostly, what happens
in the studio, will not actually happen, it is like when the GH5 appeared the first time,
every test published on web agreed that till 6400 ISO it works like crazy
but later on has been proved that in low light conditions,
in the "real world", outside, it hardly kept up with 1600 and 3200 was
its deadline with high light lenses in order to be used
for professional works. Thus in a future video I will
show something more.
Beyond what has been said in many reviews concerning pre-production models,
I saw that, especially, in dark videos, the GH5S is
is higly improved. It has an autofocus that never missed a target, never missed a shoot during my tests,
even when I find myself in complete darkness, thus I give it full marks.
Let's now come to the main reason why this camera has been designed
I really hoped that Panasonic would have made a camera
able to be free of film grain and thanks to the GH5S, it got
really, really close.
According to my tests, however, I realized that videos shooted by this camera are amazing but only
with very, very, very highlight lenses, it is preposterous to compare the GH5S to the Sony
α7S II, in fact the GH5S can not keep up with it, in terms of lowlight,
but it has, of course, the advantage of having 10bit, of being able to shoot 50-60 frames-
per-second, of having any slow motion, and all those settings that I have already found
in the GH5. Unfortunately clean files with lenses, let's say, from F1.7
or higher in dark conditions, as you will see soon, the outcomes are not so
good as those that you may find online.
On the other hand, using very higlight lenses, whihc means, from F1.4 to 0.95
the outcomes are different, a lot different, and there it becomes a "man on mission".
But why talking about this stuff? You might think that if someone has to shoot
lowlight, he is going to get lowlight lenses. But what matters here is
the price. Just think that a Panasonc F1.2 lens
and Panasonic 12 mm lens, both made by the company which produces the GH5S,
costs 1.200 euros.
Thus,
according to the differences between the GH5 and the GH5S,
in lowlight and with, let's say, "cheap" lenses,
there is not so much difference, but, of course, working using
very, very highlight lenses, the difference will show up because,
of course, the camera is able to shoot better with more light
and I saw that it controls much better sorry, it controls badly
the underexposure. When situation of high underexposure show up
if it is really dark, you will see a lot the film grain
and you get that chromatic noise which is very bad to see and you can not even get rid of
using denoiser programs, like Neat video, thus those who want to buy the
GH5S must rember that he is going to spend alot
for lenses, and, of course, you might think about buying speed booster,
I had a Viltrox, but you still have problems due to optical flares.
These problems are not easy to eliminate
and when you shoot by night and you may have
a street light in front of you, keep on having those horrible things, which are optical flares,
is frightening, at least for me, and I can't see videos this way.
I always try to have native lenses that belong to the camera
thus in order to have high quality, and I don't want something more between
the glass of the lens and and the camera sensor.
Anyway, this is something really individual, you may like it or not,
but it will cost you, though.
Anyway, I don't want to bother you further, I have
already talked too much, I can simply say to you that there is not
a winner between these two camers, they make stuff completely
different from each other and they work in different ways
if you are looking for a camera to bring with you in your travels, a camera that let you shoot
a video anytime without too much thinking about how to get a marvellous result,
just take the GH5, easy.
Its stabilized sensor is something really amazing.
Unfortunately, Panasonic did not provide it the new model, because, maybe,
it would have never angered its customers that bought a GH5
on Christmas but they discover now a new model
that came out so soon. Believe me, though, when I tell you that going around the world
with a gimbal, which you cannnot always
use in every occasion, thus I would reccomend the GH5S
to those who are pros, who work in situazions where they can control
anytime any movements. Concerning extreme lowlight situation, anyway, none of them is really
perfect as a camera.
I really think that the best is still the Sony α7S II
and the GH5S is not so close to it, but it is a real big step indeed.
We got back two steps more on ISO.
Having an ISO that can be used for professional
works till 6400, which is, of course, very high,
but no further.
Thus for dark, dark, dark-you-can-not-see situations, it is not the right camera for you.
Thus, if you go around European cities or big cities around the world, you will always have
enough light in order to shoot using the GH5 endowed with a highlight lens
and without losing too much money.
You will find on this channel
the video I made in Vienna, on New Year's Eve,
in lowlight situations with the GH5
and you will see that maybe it is not worthy to
spend one thousand euros more, only for the camera body,
as it is its actual price.
But, it might be better to have a good deal
buying a GH5 at a better price.
I will not take anyside, I have them both
as a matter of fact, I think, that to hold them both it is the best solution
in order to use each of them in the right moment, but if I have to choose one,
the one without which I could barely make a video
is the GH5.
Thus I would buy it, for sure, if I should choose now.
What else? Enough talking, I have already bother you a lot,
Cheers to you all and I will give you some clips of mine
See you on my next video. Ciao!
One last thing, I did not tell you
but this video has been released both with the GH5
and the GH5S, for this reason you did not see them both in my desk
and I am pretty sure that you will not be able to see any difference between the two cameras,
as both are amazing cameras! Ciao!
