My Windows XP [RETRO] GAMING PC | Ep. 144 - Duration: 14:59.
Hey, guys!
Welcome back!
After that unfortunate situation related to my IBM PS/1 from 1993,
I grabbed my HP Pavilion from 2005 just to try to attenuate my pain.
With this one, I want to revive the glory days of XP gaming and play games that were
tweaked to take full advantage of its capabilities.
So, without further ado, let's take a look!
This mighty HP Pavilion, model w5340.pt, is packed with pretty cool features that I'm
yet to discover, like composite video in and S-video in and out.
It means that I'll be able to capture footage directly from it, right?
That really sounds cool!
And, talking about sound, onboard audio is, obviously, present and provided by a built-in
Azalia 8-channel High Definition Audio Codec from Realtek, and, for now, I've fitted
a 120 GB IDE hard drive that I want to replace in the future by an SSD that will send this
machine flying into space, and even far beyond!
It has also onboard graphics provided by an ATI Radeon Xpress 200 that isn't exactly
what we're looking for in a gaming build.
So, I grabbed a PCI Express card that I had laying around:
this ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT, with 256 MB, from around 2007,
and I'm not gonna go wild with numbers and benchmarks.
I simply want to install games and play as smooth as possible, even if, for that, I have
to reduce the settings a bit.
Let me remind you that I'm going to connect this Pavilion Desktop machine to my 22''
HP screen that has that weird 16 by 10 aspect ratio offering 1680x1050 of native resolution.
So, will this Pentium 4 machine, with 3.20 GHz and 2 GB of DDR2 SDRAM, be able to bring
all the fun from the glory days of Windows XP?
Let's find out starting by installing the OS.
Let's try, first, from an XP Service Pack 3 ISO file, downloaded a few years back directly
from Microsoft's website, and use an USB stick for this purpose.
I tried this little application called "Win Setup From USB" that would format and prepare
the pen drive and make it bootable, but I never managed to successfully install the OS.
Tried different brands and capacities of USB sticks, different ISO files and even other
applications, like the popular Rufus, with always the same results.
Ended up burning a CD with my initial ISO file and, finally,
Windows XP Service Pack 3 was installed.
With all drivers and updates also successfully installed,
it's finally time to try some games!
Yeah!!!
So, let's start by the groundbreaking Far Cry!
What an amazing experience back in the day!
Crytek's technology was so incredible that simply blew everyone who played it and was
praised all over the place.
Few were the games that allowed this kind of freedom, and, graphically, it's still
a pretty good-looking game.
As you can see, it runs smoothly with all settings maxed out.
You know that I love my racing games, so, back in the Windows XP days,
the Colin McRae Rally franchise was a huge deal for me.
This is the 2005 game that was released in September of 2004 alongside the console versions.
It was the first time that a Colin McRae Rally game was released for the PC simultaneously
with its rivals, in this case, the PS2 and the Xbox.
It was a pretty awesome farewell from, let's say, the first part of the franchise.
Three years later it was time for the series to evolve onto Colin McRae DiRT.

Back in 2007 everyone was playing online Unreal Tournament III.
What an overwhelming and frenetic experience!
It was one of the first games to run on Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3, that was used 'til,
at least, 2013 and the base for games like BioShock Infinite.
Throughout the 2000s I used to participate in LAN parties, and this type of games were
perfect for those, let's say, gatherings!
It runs perfectly at 60 frames in this HP Pavilion.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was a PlayStation 2 exclusive game for about 8 months and was
the version that I finished.
Then ended up selling my PS2 copy of the game and went for the PC amazing release, in this
gorgeous edition.
Haven't finished this one yet, but I intend to while GTA 6 doesn't surface!
It sold over 27 million copies, a number also driven by controversy around the fact that
we could "drink" really "hot coffee"!
Eh eh eh!
You know what I mean!
Hey!
I'm no saint!
I obviously had to try it out!
Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb takes place before the events of the second Indy
movie, Temple of Doom, and it's a pretty solid action adventure game.
It was also available for the Xbox and the PS2, but these two have some graphical and
technical issues that fans of the man in the hat should avoid getting.
The story takes place in 1935, 12 years before Indy's encounter with the Russians on his
first 3D instalment: Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine from 1999
that I've already reviewed.
In this one, the Nazis are back and ready to, again, complicate his journey.
It runs great on my Pavilion and that's a game that I want to review soon.
Now comes my favorite title from the MX vs ATV franchise: MX vs ATV Unleashed.
This PC version was the last to be released, a year after the console versions, but came
with an exclusive and amazing Track Editor that allowed fans to create their own tracks.
And there's thousands online ready to be downloaded!
The sky is the limit for our imagination!
Even the tracks from the previous game of the series, MX Unleashed, were converted to
this one!
Incredible work, and an incredible game that, again, is still my favorite.
I ordered this precise version from the States, 'cause in Europe was going to be released
60 days later!
I was in a hurry to play this game!
I've already reviewed it!
Check it out!
Spite the positive reviews from the press, Max Payne 2 sold poorly.
It's kind of strange, after the huge commercial success of the first entry in the series.
I just love to use and abuse the bullet time mode and, with it, came also, and for the
first time in the series, the awesome Havok physics engine that is just perfect for all
these action scenes that really enhances the feeling of a movie-like experience.
It simply feels more realistic in every single aspect with objects reacting to explosions
and enemy bodies falling accordingly to the laws of gravitation.
It was a feast to my eyes back in 2003.
In 2005, Pandemic Studios developed Star Wars: Battlefront II that I grabbed day one.
It was one of my biggest addictions back then!
And playing it online, being part of this amazing universe, was an overwhelming experience.
But it went through a rough development process.
It was supposed to be a multiplayer-only game, but LucasArts demanded that a single player
campaign should also be included in the final version, all this a few months before the
game was released.
The impossible was achieved and Battlefront II sold extremely well.
An amazing game, released in a time when we could play online games without being teased
with micro transactions and loot boxes!
If you haven't already, check my complete history of LucasArts in where this fact, and
many others, are unveiled.
And, to conclude this video, let's recall TOCA Race Driver 3, from Codemasters!
This game includes the astonishing number of 120 championships and 35 types of racing.
It was another huge online addiction for me back in 2006, when it was released, and was
another game that I bought day 1 to race online against other 11 drivers
from all around the world.
This was the last TOCA game from the series.
In the meanwhile, the franchise evolved to simply Race Driver and, later, to Grid with
the last one being released in 2014.
So, I guess it's time to bring a new game to the series, don't you think?
And I truly hope that the spirit of the TOCA games returns to the current generation of
gaming platforms!

A pretty awesome machine in where I can revive those Windows XP classics in all their glory,
and how they should be played!
You probably also have access to a similar setup that is most likely forgotten on a storage
room gathering dust.
This is the perfect time to go get it and upgrade it as much as you can, and while you
still can, before prices for these things starts to climb!
There are, obviously, a few tweaks and adjustments that I have to do on this particular build,
and one or two hardware alterations that are imperative to be looked at soon, like the
replacement of the IDE Hard Drive for a faster SSD solution.
It will speed things up mainly in terms of booting onto the OS that is taking around
the 40 seconds' mark.

Aloha, I'm Andy and in this video I will replace the speaker for the WayteQ x850 GPS.
So let's dig in.
This is my neighbours GPS, it's a WayteQ x850 GPS.
And as you hear the speaker doesn't work anymore.
Now I will turn off and I will disassembly.
The battery cover is broken.
I remove the battery.
With a small Phillips screwdriver I unscrew the 5 holding screws.
With the help of the plastic opening tool, I open up the GPS.
I will try to remove the old speaker.
This is not an easy job to do, there is no space for my big fingers.
I try to remove the display to have more space, but after I removed the duktape,
it seems there is enough space to unsolder the speaker.
With my old soldering gun now I will try to unsolder the speaker without to damage the motherboard.
Ok, I did it, it wasn't so hard after all.
Now I will solder the new speaker and I hope it will work.
I put back the display and the battery.
And the moment of truth.
Yes, it's working.
Now I can assembly the GPS.
Now I will turn on and testing again and simulate a route.

L14 - Blockchain Networks (CBDE Course) - Duration: 4:52.
In this lecture we are touching on networks.
It's usually confusing for people who are just starting with Ethereum Development.
But even if you are a seasoned developer, there might be the one or the other information
that is interesting for you.
Let's start with the networks.
Ethereum is a blockchain that is running on the Ethereum Protocol.
That's known, but consider it a reminder.
But nothing stops you from just opening your own Ethereum Blockchain which adheres to this
Ethereum Protocol.
So you could have a couple of nodes running together, mining blocks and doing exactly
what the Ethereum Protocol tells them to do.
But these nodes - in your own network - they are not mining blocks in the so called Main-Net.
They would operate on a separate network.
The network, from a usage point of view, would be exactly the same as the main-net.
You have the same way of sending transactions.
You have the same way of interacting with smart contracts.
You have the same way of getting the balance for one address.
But the content of the blocks would be different . And with that the amount of ether attached
to an address, or the smart contracts running would probably be different.
Now there are several ways of starting your own Ethereum Blockchain.
One is to copy or clone what's already out there and then just have it run in parallel
to the Main-Net.
That would be a typical fork.
Ethereum Classic and Ethereum started like this.
So you have two, almost identical blockchains running side by side which are differentiating
themselves over time.
The other way would be to start a brand new chain with block zero.
The very first block is also called the genesis-block .
This is where the test-networks come in.
I'm talking here about Rinkeby and Ropsten for example.
They are adhering to the Ethereum Protocol, there are mining nodes, there are Ether on
there and smart contracts too.
But the Ether there are not worth anything, because it's a separate network, a separate
blockchain.
Which is really good, because that way a larger audience can test the behavior of transactions
or smart contracts.
But all of that is very "unhandy" for developers.
If you just want to start to develop then deploying to the main-net would be costly.
You would need to spend ether for gas just to develop smart contracts.
Directly developing on the Ethereum Test-Net is also pretty bad, because it is time-intensive
to deploy and interact with a real blockchain.
With every interaction you would have to wait for the transaction to be mined.
So, every time you call a function you need to wait a minute - give or take.
There is another way of doing that for developers.
That is a simulation which only runs in memory . That way mining is only simulated and you,
as a developer, you don't have to wait for transactions.
They are mined immediately.
This is also the right way of development with unit testing.
If you run your unit-tests over and over on the a real blockchain, which would - depending
on the size of the project - take a few minutes every time.
Or you run it against an in-memory blockchain simulation and you have your results immediately.
Even there is not much take away for you in this lecture, I still wanted to touch again
on this topic.
It's confusing for people who are just starting off and sometimes still not 100% clear for
people who already programmed a few smart contracts.
Let's get to the next lecture where we are talking about blockchain node implementations.

So we can't share with him. Which is a shame.
Yeah. We're basically just gonna push most of today.
We're pretty much not gonna slow down or stop for anything,
except for maybe to go see the viaduct that's our friend told us about
Noah mentioned the viaduct, so we're gonna go take a look at the viaduct.
Hopefully not all of the locks are set against us, hopefully too many fishermen.
Well hat boat came up yesterday so hopefully they're all set. Maybe, we're lucky.
So we've got to get moving to find out. Breakfast time.

Anyway, somebody wrote it out for me and in its, kind of, phonetic and I'm like that looks right but I can't read it properly.
And we're sorry that we still can't get it right.
So we've done eight locks, we're gonna do another, probably five. And erm...
Try and get down to, probably Long Eaten where the Tesco's is.
We had some lunch. And its cold and its windy. And George got a nice good ball throw.
Ah.. It came off pretty easy.
So we were just about to come into Hallam Fields lock after lunch and
I pulled up to drop Michael off and then... ruined the boat...
I did a little bang into the side because I couldn't... like reverse just wasn't working
The whole engine was shaking, and then I tried to go forward and that wasn't working.
So I just kind of floated around and went 'MICHAEL'
So then I took the cover off the engine, looked down on it,
kicked in neutral, revved forward and back, it wasn't shaking, so that means it's not the engine mounts.
or something going wrong inside there would be really bad.
So because it was only when the prop was moving it was either the transmission had shot.
Or, something had gotten wrapped around the prop.
So to the lovely person that left a rubble sack in the canal. Thanks! Good fun.
But, its not bad. This is only the second time we've been down the rubble sack....
...the rubble sack! The weed hatch, in a year.
The last time was on the Thames in June. Yeah, for the most part we've been pretty lucky.
And this came off really easily, you know, once I got my hand in there.
This could have gotten wrapped up so much worse because its all nylon.
Its lucky I detected it when it happened. Yeah, you detected pretty fast.
So that's delayed us. Of course it was me that stuck my arms down the damn thing.
You've got longer arms, its only practical.
So that's delayed us for about half an hour. So lets get on. Yeah, next lock and onwards.
I think we've got three more locks to go... and we are just about to go under the M1
and Michael is back there walking with George.
So Jo had to give up driving the boat because of tiller-mans shoulder.
Its not tiring but because you're got your arm back like that
That's why I sit up on that thing all the time. Yeah, but then you'reup and down
It's just like, the top of your back, like your neck, starts to ache.
But eventually you build muscles. I'm not at that stage yet.
Which is interesting because since we've been living on the boat and
continuously cruising, so, 11 months. we've...there's been this ongoing discussion
about which jobs harder, and mainly stemming from the fact that Michael
does... has historically done 95 percent of the driving.
Yeah, historical discussion, as in a whole bunch of people commenting on the videos about why is
Michael the lazy one and Jo just tooling around doing all of this work.
And everybody's so impressed with Jo's walking ability. Yeah because...
I've walked a lot because of the dog but also because I haven't driven as much, it's
meant I've done all the locks. So there was this ongoing discussion, debate about
what's harder. Is steering the boat, or, working all the locks. And obviously, as
the one who works all the locks, I was adamant that driving the boat was much
easier, because you just get to stand at the back, chat with the other boaters
when you're in locks, and have everything, kind of done for you .
Uh-hu! And now you know.
No. I do think, that's doing the look is physically much, much harder without a doubt.
It's more work, It's much harder. But, depending on the, erm, situation...
the circumstances... the environment... what's the word I'm looking for? Reality!
Depending on the lock that you're driving into. driving the boat is a lot
more stressful because, like today for instance, there was a lot of wind and
there was a lot of overflow from the locks,
a lot of low bridges, and a lot of turbulence in the locks.
I mean it's not completely unphysical because I've got an aching shoulder from doing it all day.
But the mental stress can be a lot more depending on how easy the locks are.
Obviously, you know, the there is much more physical exercise involved in doing the locks, there's no question of that.
You're, you know, rotating things pulling great huge beams.
And they can be really heavy. They can be incredibly heavy. And the paddles can be really heavy.
Driving the boat is... still physical.
But the main thing is, you're standing out there completely exposed to the environment while trying
not to crash a 50-foot thing you at the back of
And then theres things that go wrong with the boat, like today we had the issue with the weed hatch so...
It's not just that you get on and have a nice little cruise.
Theres so many external forces that... that you have to always be paying attention to.
Other boaters, fishermen.
And you know, when the prop conked out and you couldn't go backwards
It's like there's these places in which... you think you're doing really
well and then you just get thrown off. Yeah!
And isn't it funny. Like, you see how much it completely throws you off.
But I think we are getting to a better balance. Because before you were doing
a hundred percent of the driving, and I was doing 100 percent of the locks and walking
And today it was... I probably did more driving than you did but, yeah and like I enjoy it
So, we're practically back in Long Eaton so the next...
