I'm in this ruined castle, and from here I will explain the difference between
two prepositions that give many, but many, one moment MANY
problems to Spanish students.
They are not other than the prepositions por and para.
Get ready because in this video you will learn in a very easy and funny way how
differentiate these two prepositions.
All this and a little more, is coming up.
Hello! I'm Sergi Martín, your Spanish teacher on YouTube.
A couple of weeks ago, a student wrote to me a phrase in which I had a question of whether
using the preposition por or the preposition para.
The phrase is not other than this:
"Sergi goes por or para? the castle.
So I thought, of course, we can use the preposition por,
or we can use the preposition para.
So in the end I did not know what preposition use.
So what I normally do in these situations that I do not know exactly what to answer
to my students, is to ask who knows all these answers.
And who better than the preposition por and the preposition para.
What did I do?
I wrote a letter.
A letter to por and a letter to para.
Do you know what happened?
Both of them answered me.
Por said: of course, you have to use me, because it's normal, Sergi goes through the castle.
But what did para write?
Para told me exactly the same thing: of course, you have to use me, because Sergi goes to
the castle.
So in the end, I was exactly the same as at the beginning, I did not know what preposition
use.
But now comes the best, because I'm going to explain what means por, what means
para, how they are and a few other things very fun for you to learn using perfectly
these two prepositions.
If you are watching this video, surely more than once you have seen explanations about
how to use POR or PARA, but you still have problems to know which one to use.
Well, I propose one thing: here you have a list of uses that you just have to memorize,
and with that you can use them well.
But wait, memorize?
Do you really think that memorizing this endless list can you use well POR and PARA?
I don't think so, and according to my experience no student learns in that way.
With this activity, you will see that it is not so difficult to use them correctly, the secret
is to understand its meaning well.
If you do, you don't need to memorize long lists like this one.
How can we get to know these prepositions well?
Well now I present them to you.
POR and PARA are two very nice prepositions who work together in the company Spanish Language
LTD, in the public relations section.
Their job is to relate some words to others to form interesting phrases, like
for example: "Hello Carlos!
I'm calling you to have a coffee. "
But, although both are very good in their work, they work very differently, each
one in their own way, because their personalities are different.
POR does not like to travel.
She prefers to stay quiet at home or in the park that is near her house.
She does not like rushes or exact dates, nor talking about future objectives, commitments
or appointments with the clock.
"My favorite hobby?
Mmmm ... take a walk IN the park, IN the afternoon.
IN the mornings I do not do anything, just rest. "
She goes out little, and therefore she orients very badly, gets lost easily and never knows for sure
where are the things neither the buildings nor people.
Actually, it's kind of lazy and does not like make efforts to think or remember.
"The hospital?
Where is the hospital?
Mmmm ... I think it's THERE, yes BY the street of the Pilar. "
"Felipe's house?
I do not know it really.
He lives BY the center, but I do not know which street. "
"The first time I went to Valencia was AROUND the year 2009, or was it AROUND 2011?
Well, AROUND the year 2010 more or less. "
PARA, however, is very restless, very active and curious.
She loves to move, travel, know new places.
She is always thinking about the future, making plans, setting dates and setting goals.
"Yes, yes, I love to travel.
Look, with other prepositions friends of mine, I have organized a trip TO know Seville.
Tomorrow we left TOWARDS Toledo, we sleep there and the next day, AT five
afternoon we are in Seville. "
Unlike POR, PARA is punctual and responsible.
She likes clear things.
"Do not worry mom, AT eleven we are at home."
"Can you finish this work FOR Friday".
As I told you, the personality is shown very well in the way of working, in the case of
POR and PARA, to relate the words.
We can see it in this example: A POR B
The thieves entered through the window.
Tomorrow I'll call you by phone and we'll set an appointment.
We haven't left home because of the snow.
POR, as we have seen, is comfortable and lazy.
She present elements A and B as simultaneous.
A exists at the same time as B.
Furthermore, if there is no A, neither does B.
If there is no window, the thieves do not enter.
Without a phone, there is no call.
Without snow, we leave home and go for a walk.
The conclusion is that POR establishes between A and B a simultaneity relation, without
linear movement.
On her business cards, POR has a spiral, but with friends she signs with
a snail.
A PARA B Julio leaves today FOR Madrid.
I'm preparing the food FOR tomorrow.
I have brought this book TO give it to Celia.
PARA, who is always thinking about traveling, imagines the two elements A and B as independent.
B is always after A.
First we leave a place, and then we arrive to a different one.
First we prepare the food, and afterwards (tomorrow) we eat it
First we bring the book, and later we deliver it.
Because of that, you can say that you are seeing this video TO learn how to use these two prepositions.
First you see the video and then you will use them very well.
The conclusion is that PARA expresses a movement forward and establishes a relationship of
posteriority.
Do you know what PARA has on her visit cards?
An arrow, but with friends she sign with a rocket.
If we go back to the phrase in the beginning of the video, we can imagine two situations: if we say
"Sergi goes POR the castle", this is the image that we see.
But if we say "Sergi goes PARA the castle", this is the image.
Now imagine that there is an earthquake, the earth opens and the castle disappears.
What happens in the first case, with POR?
If the castle disappears, Sergi disappears.
And what about PARA?
If the castle disappears, Sergi doesn't happen anything and he can make more videos like this one.
Now I give you some examples, in which you have to decide if the phrase is correct and think
about a context suitable for it.
Remember that you can write it below, on the comments.
Do you think all the answers are correct for this question?
Do you understand what they mean?
You can pause the video to think about it before I tell you the solution.
In this example, I'm asking about the destination.
So, answer A is not logical, because it does not answer my question.
It does not mean that it is a wrong phrase, but that was not what I was asking.
If we go BY the river, we are describing the place where we are
at this moment, not destiny.
Remember, if the river disappears, we disappear.
Answer B has logic, since FOR here indicates the direction, the destination.
The same goes for C, where the preposition A has practically the same meaning.
Here, we also give more information, that It is the route we make, the new path.
Let's go with another example.
Here I am asking about my position to take a picture.
A is logical because the answer means I have to look through that window.
B is not logical, because I can not see anything through the wall.
Well, unless the wall is transparent or have the vision of Superman.
C is logical because I have to orient my face in the direction of the window.
If we change example C by "Look TOWARDS the wall ", would also be correct because
what matters is the direction of the gaze.
The three answers are logical.
In A we say the means by which we have bought the book.
In B, we say that I bought the book and that the recipient is Andrea.
So, first I bought the book and later I give it to Andrea.
In C, we do not say who the recipient of the book is, but the idea of buying that book
is Andrea's
Do you realize?
If Andrea does not give me that idea, I do not buy the book.
As you see, if you understand the meaning and the personality of these two prepositions you can
use them much better.
