Hi everyone! Welcome to WHY NOT CORNER!
I´m Ester and in this channel you will find crafts, original recycling ideas and refurbished furniture
On this occasion I decided to transform this old chest of drawers
In a vintage style one inspired by some furniture that nowadays we can find in decoration stores
to give it a more current look
to make it I have used chalk paint and a craquelure varnish
to give that aged touch
Keep watching the video to see the step by step and be able to give another look to your furniture

We will start cleaning the furniture
The second step is to protect the shooters using masking or painter's tape
so we will maintain the color of the wood and we will be able to paint the drawers comfortably.
In this piece of furniture you can not dismantle the handles so I decided not to paint them to make them stand out more.
The third step is to paint the first layer of paint.
Choose different colors for the drawers but combine them so that you can alternate the layers
I used an old white, a toffee color, a London gray and graphite color.
Keep in mind that light colors cover less so you'll have to give two covers
as the case of the white color
Be sure of extend paint very well
The next step is to apply the craquelure varnish once the paint has dried.
You should apply a good cover so that it is well-grounded and try to give it with little touches
You can also take out the drawers if you find it more comfortable.
Wait for the varnish to dry well and apply a second coat of another color so that when cracked, the veins contrast with the background color.
We must apply the paint in the same direction taking care not to drag the varnish
since previous work will not do any good.
You can apply the paint with a sponge if you want
A trick to see more veins is to apply a thin layer of paint
As you can see, I am alternating the four colors in the different drawers.
I recommend that before painting, think about the final effect so you have clear colors to use when you're ready to work.
The effect will be different depending on the type of paint and how we have applied the varnish
but it is very difficult to predict how the veins will be as it also depends on the brand you use
I have been different veins according to the brand of paint I have used and the pigmentation of it.
For example, in the white color they do not stand out too much but in the toffee itself.
The sixth step is to use a wet cloth to highlight the crackle
and give that worn touch in the corners and edges of the drawers.
The effect is the same as if we sanded it but it will be more subtle and in this way we do not dirty
since when sanding everything gets dirty, so it is more practical for me and the result is more beautiful than using sandpaper
By rubbing it with the cloth, we will be able to lift the paint and highlight the contrast between both colors
and also we will open the veins that have been formed with the craquelure.
This step is personal , we can give a more or less worn effect to each drawer or all with the same effect.
We have almost finished the furniture but we want that WOW result!
So we will use black wax to further highlight the crackle and the aged effect of the furniture.
The best thing is that you apply it with a specific brush for wax, better than with a cloth.
Below in the description I will leave you the link of the products and brushes that I use and that work for me.
Take advantage of the wax to correct the worn parts of the wood
As you can see, I am applying it to the table and sides of the chest of drawers to restore the damaged areas.
The next step is to paint the holes in the drawer if it has one.
Choose the colors well depending on the colors you have used in the drawers
so that the contrast will be beautiful and balanced.
I did not know whether to paint them or not but finally I think the result is good
since I have not given any effect to the painting and the furniture is not overloaded.
We almost have it but we can still improve it more so that we have an incredible result!
The ninth step is to apply golden wax to give a small golden patina to the cabinet
When applying make sure not to throw too much so that the effect is subtle and not spoil the previous work.
Apply it on handles, edges and sides of the furniture
As you can see, first I am applying it in all the drawers
You can also do this same effect with another color like black or white
to highlight areas like laterals, shooters...
I really like the golden patina because it gives a very vintage and elegant effect
And finally, a little dry brush passes over the edges of the top table to give that nice touch of light to the furniture.
Finally we will apply a matt colorless varnish or, colorless wax to the parts where we have painted it
to protect the furniture for a long time.
To apply the varnish, we will use a flat brush and we will extend it very well.
If you decide to apply colorless wax, I recommend using a gauze of threads to apply it.
And voila! We already have a new chest of drawers with a vintage style that has nothing to envy to many of those that sell that are also expensive!
I hope you liked the tutorial and I encourage you to put it into practice.
