Stuff I Never Knew: Are You Going My Direction!? - Duration: 4:05.- Hey guys, Shawn again, Custom Offsets
CustomOffsetsTV on YouTube.
Got another episode of Sh*t I Never Knew
Are You Going My Direction?
What we want to talk about, this one comes up a lot
and we touch on it a little bit with some car wheels
but we had this opportunity to get these big old
Fuel Forged wheels in here
directional wheels, directional tires.
What a lot of times you'll see
is you'll see a wheel design that has these blades that dig.
You'll be like, "That must be a directional wheel."
Not necessarily.
Sometimes what they'll do is they'll have this design
but all of the wheels, all four will go the same direction
so they'll all tip to the clockwise.
That is not a true directional wheel.
When you get into a directional wheel
note that these go clockwise
and now these are coming counter-clockwise.
What trucks typically will do, I should say always
because I think that is the general rule
is the truck should dig.
A truck should rotate this way
because it's digging into the ground.
This one is designed for the passenger side of the truck.
This guy wants to go this way
so he's going to be designed, ran over my foss glass.
He's going to be designed for the driver's side of the truck
so you'll see that they go two opposite directions.
What does that mean?
That means that you can either A, not rotate
from side to side
or B, you'll end up running the wheels backwards
when you rotate if you go side to side.
You can always go front to back
because they're going to be directional to a set.
Now let me confuse you even more
or un-confuse you even more
it depends on how you're doing
as far as keeping up.
This Free Passer tire is also directional.
What you'll see is these lugs are all headed thataway.
That means that this tire
is also designed to be on the passenger side.
When it's coming down the road
it's digging into the ground.
It's grabbing and throwing water, snow
sand, whatever it is.
Probably not mud with this fancy-ass setup.
This side you'll see is going the opposite direction
so this is going to be again your driver's side.
What you'll see on the side wall of the tire
it will actually say rotation
and it's got an arrow mark
and it tells you that this tire is designed to be mounted
with this out and that rotation headed that way
which is the same rotation
as the digging pattern of these directional wheels.
That's it, I don't want to drag this one out.
It is what it is.
Directional wheel, directional wheel
directional tire with that lug pattern
wanting to dig.
If you were to run it this way, that would be wrong
because it's coming at you going that way.
It's not funneling the water
it's basically snagging the water and whatnot.
That is the whole concept of a directional tire
directional wheel.
When you go and put these on a vehicle
you're basically going to be able to rotate
front to back front to back front to back
but if you were to rotate side to side
the wheel direction would be going the wrong way
but also your tread would be going the wrong way
and it's not going in the way it was designed
to rotate down the road
and you're going to get weird wearing issues.
That is Are You Going My Direction
Custom Offsets, CustomOffsetsTV on YouTube, peace.

Debra Lee Baldwin's Succulent Garden in Midwinter - Duration: 11:36.Come on down!
I'm planting this
raised area
with cuttings
I think it's going
to be really pretty
surrounding the
base of the
Beaucarnea recurvata
So far, I haven't had
any problem with
frost here, because
I think the beaucarnea
is just enough to
protect it.
So, this is my
lower garden
I have a half acre
And it's on a
steep slope
I sometimes call it
my inhospitable
half-acre because
it's very rocky,
the soil is poor
it's decomposed
granite and clay
I've done a lot of
amending
I've lived here
for 25 years
had a lot of compost
that I've added back
into the soil
I also use mushroom
compost, I mix in
things like pumice
that help the soil
to drain
I designed this new
section of the garden
that has all the
flagstone to be
viewed primarily
from this location
Because before, the
garden was a bit
of a mish-mash
and I wanted to be
able to get good
photography from one
main location
And so you come
down the stairs
and you enter this
area that is sheltered
by this large oak tree
I can grow just about
anything under this,
even though I have a
somewhat challenging
climate, I get near-desert
heat in the summer,
and it dips below freezing
in the winter
Thanks to the oak tree
I've got a perfect
microclimate for
succulents, and it is
a little messy, it
drops leaves and I
have to keep after
them, but not only
does it have this
multilayered canopy
that creates bright
shade, it also has this
great oak leaf mulch
decomposing oak leaves
plants of all kinds
just thrive in oak
leaf mulch
so if you have an
oak tree, it's a tremendous
blessing, it'll provide
shade for your plants
in the summertime
and frost protection
in the winter
So as you come into
this area, you can
see there's a lot of
repetition going on
here, I have the blue
senecio all along here
And that's just sort
of like a river that
flows through here
Graptoveria 'Fred Ives'
is one of my
favorite succulents
I like how it turns
different colors
at different times
of the year
It's a real chameleon
And a real powerhouse
in the garden
A dasylirion over there
with long, thin leaves
When you see these
moving in the wind
it's wonderful
it's like a fountain
And at the base
are some aloes
It's beautiful when
it blooms
And everybody asks
about these
Boophone disticha
A kind of bulb
With crazy wrinkled
curved leaves and
they've yet to bloom
I think maybe they
get a little too much
shade, but they're
interesting just for
their fan-shaped,
curvy, wrinkly leaves
My favorite plant for
popping into bare
spots in the garden
is Aloe brevifolia
Wherever you put it
it just does really well
It doesn't take over
though, but it will
form a colony
and over time
you get this lovely
fullness and repetition
of form
This rock wall was
already here, I've
added aeoniums
They look really good
along the top of it
As you look up the
slope, I've also added
more aeoniums
Because they're just
so happy underneath
the oak tree
You know, one neat
thing about coming
here in midwinter
Is you see things in
bloom that you
wouldn't see in spring
when everything is
blasting into bloom
And among them
are the cotyledons
So this is a kind of
a rangy, leggy plant
that's not beautiful
most of the year
Late December,
January, you get these
spectacular, parasol-like
flowers.
They look like
ladies' ballgowns
Look at that
The way the hardscape
is formed is it's
not a perfect line
I wanted curves and
S-shapes in the garden
Because it's more natural
This is the succulent
sitting area
It's like sitting inside
a succulent wreath
What I really love
about it is when you're
sitting here, the plants
are at eye level
It's the first area that
I try to make nice
when I have company
coming, because we're
going to be sitting here,
and we're going to be
looking at these plants
close up
It's just a real happy
coincidence that all of
these are facing the
viewer, because that
is the direction of
greatest light
And I put my more
spectacular plants
here that you want
to see close up,
like the large aeonium
Aeonium 'Moonglow'
or it's the opposite
of 'Sunburst' because
it has more green on it
than yellow.
Variegated
aloes do really well
here, they like this
bright shade underneath
the oak trees, but they
don't bloom here
I mean, that's your
tradeoff, and I grow
it for its leaves, not for
its flowers, because
I know the shade is
too deep for it to
bloom here, and I don't
want it to bloom
because it's going to
send blooms right
into the sitting area
and they're going to
be in the way, I'd have
to clip them off.
The regular Aloe
arborescens over here
is in full, beautiful
bloom right now
because it's getting
more sun, so know your
microclimates, understand
the orientation of your
garden to the sun
because it's going to
make a big difference
in where you position
sitting areas, what
direction the plants
are going to naturally
turn toward
You have to allow for that.
Because if they're
growing in semishade
and the greatest light
is coming from another
direction, they're going
to lean toward it.
So plan for that.
Now here we have
a little aloe that
doesn't seem to mind
the low light, and it's
blooming anyway
But it's the exception
This is also a perfect
location for echeverias
They're completely
protected from direct
hot sun that could
scorch their leaves
Isn't this spectacular?
Three variegates that
repeat the same
starburst shape
But they're all
different plants
So that's a repetition
but it's also
interesting because
they are different,
they're not the same.
Plants create your
composition over time
too, you know they
grow maybe higher or
wider or they'll lean
more, or they'll do
things that you didn't
expect, they'll weave
in and out of other plants
if they're like these
cute little crassulas
This was just a cutting
somebody gave me
popping out here
it's making friends with
this giant aeonium
It's also cascading
down here, which I
love.
So that's part
of the fun and part
of the distressing
aspects of gardening,
is you never know
quite what the plants
are going to do
and they usually do
something that you
hadn't anticipated
but when it works,
it's usually the most
amazingly beautiful
thing that you never
thought of
and you're just taken
away by the beauty
of it.
So I'd say that a
lot of this area was
done by the plants
themselves, and I
can't take credit
for it.
This by the way
is the color wheel
that I did for my
Craftsy class
I try to keep it with
the plants that need
sun in order to turn
orange and yellow and
red on the east side
where they'll get the
most sun because
they're going to need
that sun in order to
color up.
Beaucarnea
recurvata, they're the
ponytail palm
they're not a palm
I guess you could
say they do have a
ponytail, but what
makes them
succulent is not their
floppy, strappy leaves,
but rather their caudex
This part, because a
succulent as you know
is any plant that
withstands periods
of drought by living
off of moisture
stored in its tissues
Well, that is a big
water storage tank
When you look at it
you may not think
"succulent," but it
very much is a
succulent, and over
time, that caudex
will fill that pot.
These pots of succulents
on the steps are
accompanied by a trio
of overly large ants
This is Sedum nussbaumerianum
You can see that I've
given an awful lot of
cuttings of this
wherever I've clipped off
the tip, it will branch
My friends think I'm
remarkably generous,
but I'm actually creating
a fuller plant through
the act of giving it away.
Cuttings stuck into
a pot, Oscularia deltoides
coppertone stonecrop
and Sedum adolphi
This pocket garden
over here was designed
by a good friend
Laura Eubanks of
Design for Serenity
Laura specializes in
creating jewel-box
succulent gardens
enhanced with rivulets
of rocks and pebbles
I especially like how
she incorporated a
pathway in this one
that leads the eye
to the arch below
And I have another
pocket garden by Laura
over here, she beautifully
repeated the color of
Aloe sinkitana flowers
and the leaves of
golden jade with bits of
yellow glass strewn
atop white sand
Both pocket gardens
were installed about
two years ago.
I suppose if you
asked me what my
favorite succulent is
in terms of a particular
plant in my garden,
it would be this
large americana
I rescued it as a pup
and now it's huge
A landscaper friend
told me, "You know,
that is going to get
so big, it's going to
encroach on the
pathway, and then
you'll have to move it."
And I said, "Well,
when that happens,
I'll move the pathway."
And sure enough,
I've had to do that.
The caudex of the
beaucarnea, it's going
to fill in this area,
hopefully in my
lifetime, and in the
meantime, I have this
mounded soil around
it that I planted with
cuttings.
This area
over here is my cactus
garden, and we
probably should leave that
for another video.
I'm Debra Lee Baldwin
Thank you for coming
to my garden.

THE 2017 HIKI NŌ Awards: Part Two - Duration: 28:38.Broadcast of HIKI NŌ are made possible by the support of viewers like you!

And by, Bank of Hawaii Foundation, Investing in Hawai'i's future by promoting
collaboration, critical thinking, and other 21st-Century skills though HIKI NŌ
Welcome to the 2017 HIKI NŌ Awards, Part 2.
Last week, we recognized the bronze, silver and gold
medalists for Best Personal Profile, Middle and High School Divisions, and for Best Writing,
Middle and High School Divisions.
Let's join hosts Leslie Wilcox and Aaron Sala as they continue on to the next
award.
Here we go.
Our next category was open to both middle and high schools: Best Franchise Piece.
A franchise piece is a short how-to video, usually running a little over a minute, that
illustrates the steps involved in completing a task or that describes
a process.
The nominees in this category were judged according to the following criteria.
Does the task or process being presented have a cultural or social significance?
Is the narration script clear, concise and thorough?
Is it compelling?
Does the narrator speak clearly, with good diction and with expression?
Is the activity shot from a variety of angles in order to make it visually interesting?
And is the camera showing us exactly what we need to see in order to understand every
stage of the process?
Does the viewer learn something?
Let's take a look at what schools were nominated in this category.
Nominated for Best Franchise Piece:
Hana K-12 School on Maui for "Ti Leaf Print," Kalani High School on O'ahu for "Thaumatrope,"
Kapa'a Middle School on Kaua'i for "10 Things to Do When You're Not On Your Smartphone,"
Kaua'i High School on Kaua'i for "Hurricane Protection,"
Moloka'i High School on Moloka'i for "Text-A-Tip" and
Pacific Buddhist Academy on O'ahu for "Offering Incense."
And the Bronze Medal for Best Franchise Piece goes to ...
Here we go ...
Kaua'i High School.
[CHEERS/APPLAUSE]
Let's take a look at the Bronze Medal winner for Best Franchise Piece, "Hurricane Protection"
by Kaua'i High School.
[MUSIC]
In this year alone, Hawai'i has already been able to luckily avoid nine different hurricanes.
However, regardless of this luck, it is always important
to understand the five P's towards hurricane protection to
ensure your safety in the event of an actual storm.
And now, the Silver Medal for Best Franchise Piece goes to ...
Okay ... Pacific Buddhist Academy on O'ahu.
[CHEERS/APPLAUSE]
Now, here's a look at the Silver Medal winner for Best Franchise Piece, "Offering Incense"
by Pacific Buddhist Academy on O'ahu.
[MUSIC]
Care should be taken when lighting the charcoal.
Make certain to have an adult present.
Then, place the charcoal in the bowl.
[MUSIC]
Take a pinch of incense, and sprinkle it on the charcoal.
And now for the top award in this category, the Gold Medal for Best Franchise Piece, and
the $1,000 of production equipment ...
Goes to ...
Goes to whom?
Kaua'i again.
Kapa'a Middle School.
[CHEERS/APPLAUSE]
Let's take a look at the Gold Medal winner for Best Franchise Piece, "10 Things to Do
When You're Not On Your Smartphone."
Keeping streaks with your friend and sending pics with dog ears are fun.
But when you're doing that, you're missing out on many things, like nature,
fun experiences and activities.
This is a problem that needs to change.
So, here are ten fun, and even useful, things to do without your phone.
1.
Interact with someone.
How about that kid in your class you've never talked to before?
Strike up a conversation.
How was your day?
How are you doing?
2.
Help your community.
Whether it's picking up trash, or collecting clothes for your local shelter,
every little bit counts.
Let's move on now to the next category: Best Factoid.
This category was open to both middle schools and high schools.
Factoids are short vignettes that appear between the stories of a HIKI NŌ episode and give
audiences a glimpse into different aspects of school life.
They're the glue that holds the shows together.
The judges scored the nominees in this category based on the following criteria.
The quality of the on- camera and voiceover presence of the hosts,
their diction, articulation, expressiveness, and confidence.
We have to speak very carefully as we say this.
I know, exactly.
The production quality of the host shots and accompanying visuals, or b-roll.
Did the visuals establish a sense of a place or of being there?
Did they capture the essence of what is being discussed in the
narration?
The creativity and writing quality of the factoid scripts.
Did the factoid give you a sense of what it's like
to be a part of the school and/or community?
And let's see which schools were nominated in this category.
Nominated for Best Factoid: Hana K-12 School on Maui for "School History,"
Hawai'i Preparatory Academy on Hawai'i Island for "Solar Trees,"
Konawaena High School on Hawai'i Island for "Wildcats,"
Mililani High School on O'ahu for "Red Dirt" and
President William McKinley High School on O'ahu for "School Spirit."
[MUSIC]
The Bronze Medal for Best Factoid goes to ...
Let's see ... Mililani High School on O'ahu, Central O'ahu.
[APPLAUSE]
Let's watch the Bronze Medal-winning factoid, "Red Dirt," by Mililani High School on O'ahu.
High levels of iron oxide in the dirt turns it red from the rust.
This rich soil once nourished pineapple and sugar cane crops.
But now, the dirt is notorious for the red stains it leaves on clothes, cars and buildings.
This is why at Mililani, red is the color of choice for roofs and lockers, to honor
the red dirt and to camouflage it.
And now the Silver Medal for Best Factoid ...
Goes to ... let's see ... silver medal ... President William McKinley High School.
[CHEERS/APPLAUSE]
Let's take a look at the Silver Medal-winning factoid, "School Spirit," by McKinley High
School on O'ahu.
[SINGING]
One of the greatest traditions at McKinley is the school spirit and pride.
From the basement beginnings of the old Fort Street Church to Princess
Ruth's Palace, to the Beretania and Victoria Street location,
McKinley High School continues to show her pride and spirit, despite its several past
locations.
In 1923, McKinley High School found a permanent home
at the current King Street location.
Rallying students helped form the construction of several buildings
and created a synergy around campus that cannot be
explained in words.
It is because of this tradition of school spirit and pride that many alumni recognize
the prestige that comes with being a graduate of McKinley.
And now, the top award in this category, the Gold Medal for Best Factoid and the $1,000
of production equipment, go to ...
Here we go.
Sometimes, the envelope doesn't quite ... get along with me.
Hawai'i Preparatory Academy from Kona.
[CHEERS/APPLAUSE]
And now, here's the Gold Medal-winning factoid, "Solar Trees," by Hawai'i Preparatory Academy
on Hawai'i Island.
T.J.
Kalaniopio, Class of 1994, is the head of maintenance, but also a cement mason.
His latest job was setting the foundation for two solar trees,
which stand fourteen feet above Kennedy Square.
These two solar trees have a thirty-foot wingspan and
collect nine kilowatts per day, completely sustaining our
student union.
And now for the next category, Best Achievement in Cinematography and Editing, which was also
open to both middle and high schools.
And here are the nominees, and the criteria that the judges used to score
these nominees.
Did the lighting, shot composition, camera angles and overall look create a mood or express
an emotion appropriate to the story being told?
Was the nominee able to shoot and edit action sequences that flowed naturally and enhanced
the telling of the story?
Was the pacing of the editing, fast or slow, appropriate to the mood and emotion of the
story?
Did they capture the magic, beauty and character of the people and places they photographed?
Did they tell a visual story?
Here are the schools nominated in this category.
Nominated for Best Achievement in Cinematography and Editing:
Kapa'a Middle School on Kaua'i for "Junior Lifeguard,"
Maui High School on Maui for "Tourette," Moanalua High School on O'ahu for "Equestrian,"
Sacred Hearts Academy on O'ahu for "IUCN," Wai'anae High School on O'ahu for "Parental
Guidance Required."
And the Bronze Medal for Best Achievement in Cinematography and Editing goes to ...
Wai'anae High School on O'ahu.
[APPLAUSE]
Here is a scene from the Bronze Medal-winning story for Best Achievement in Cinematography
and Editing, "Parental Guidance Required," by
Wai'anae High School on O'ahu.
For junior Anuhea Hamilton, this is the course she's chosen.
And this is the finish line.
[WHISTLE]
[INDISTINCT SHOUTING]
Like, I love wrestling because it's my life.
[INDISTINCT SHOUTING]
I get stressed out at school, and at home especially.
But when I'm wrestling, that's when I find my
release.
I may be mentally exhausted and physically sore, but it's like my escape from reality.
And now, the Silver Medal for Best Achievement in Cinematography and Editing goes to ...
Silver Medal ... to Moanalua High School.
[APPLAUSE]
Let's take a look at a scene from the Silver Medal-winning story for Best Achievement in
Cinematography and Editing, "Equestrian," by Moanalua High School on O'ahu.
Moanalua High School senior Angelina Johnson has always had a passion for horseback riding.
I love being around horses.
Just the energy and the kindness in their eyes, the way that they look at you,
the way that they understand you.
They are very kind souls, and I just want to work with them for the rest
of my life.
I think horseback riding means so much to me now at this point because I've put so much
into it.
I've put hours and hours, and a lot of sweat and tears into horseback riding.
And now for the top award in this category, the Gold Medal for Best Achievement in Cinematography
and Editing and the $1,000 of production equipment go to ...
From the island of Maui, Maui High School.
[APPLAUSE]
Here is the Gold Medal-winning story for Best Achievement in Cinematography and Editing,
"Tourette," by Maui High School.
[CHUCKLE] I just like sports.
It's what I like to do.
I'm not very academically good.
For thirteen-year-old Bristyl Dempsey, cheerleading is what makes her jump for joy.
It's fun.
It's very hard, though, especially because everyone on my cheer team has already done
cheer before, and I haven't.
However, cheerleading is not the hardest thing she has to deal with.
It was fifth grade, Christmastime.
It was Christmas night.
We had had a wonderful Christmas with family, and then that night, she started coming
down the stairs, and she lost all control of muscle function.
She collapsed to the ground, and she couldn't stand up.
After several doctor exams, Bristyl was diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome.
Like two hundred thousand other sufferers in America, Bristyl
is unable to control her recurring movements and sounds,
such as squeaking, scrunching her face, opening her mouth and moving her neck side-to-side,
especially when she gets nervous.
According to her mother ...
She'd be squeaking up a storm, and ticking up a storm.
This made Bristyl an easy target for schoolmates who didn't understand that her behavior was
caused by a neurological disorder.
But it wasn't only her peers who didn't understand Bristyl.
One of her teachers mistook Bristyl's Tourette's symptoms for
misbehaving in class.
Her teacher ...
Would yell at me, thinking I was on my cell phone.
I would tell her, No, it's my tic.
And she's like, Well, do it above.
And I was like, But I'm gonna whack the person next to me in the face, you know.
This brings us to the category in which all of the skills developed in HIKI NŌ come together:
Best Overall Story, Middle School Division.
The judges score these nominees based on the following criteria:
This is a biggie.
Did the nominee tell a compelling, informative story?
Did they use an effective combination of imagery, written word, interview sound bites and natural
sound?
Was the pacing in terms of the editing and the speed of the reporter's speaking appropriate
to the story being told?
Was the reporter's presentation clear and commanding?
Did the story offer something of relevance to the general viewing public?
Did it follow good journalistic practices?
Let's see which schools were nominated in this category.
Nominated for Best Overall Story, Middle School Division:
Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School on Kaua'i for "Dog Wheelchair,"
Kapa'a Middle School on Kaua'i for "Firefighter," Ka Waihona O Ka Na'auao on O'ahu for "Steel
Guitar," Seabury Hall Middle School on Maui for "Haleakala
Mules" and Wai'anae Intermediate School on O'ahu for
"A Home for Larenzo."
The Bronze Medal for Best Overall Story, Middle School Division, goes to ...
Ka Waihona O Ka Na'auao PCS.
[CHEERS/APPLAUSE]
Let's take a look at a scene from the Bronze Medalist for Best Overall Story, Middle School
Division, "Steel Guitar," by Ka Waihona O Ka Na'auao
on O'ahu.
[STEEL GUITAR]
Its distinctive twang and slides are staples of Hawaiian music today.
The steel guitar has influenced musicians globally, but got its start more
than a hundred years ago with a Native Hawaiian man from the
little town of La'ie on O'ahu.
His name was Joseph Kekuku.
I've heard several stories of how it got started.
The one I heard was, he was walking home on the train
track, playing his guitar and his comb or something fell and hit the guitar, and he
liked the sound that it made.
Oh, that gave him an incentive to improve on the sounds.
So, he started practicing with this thing on the strings to get the sound that he wanted
to, and eventually ended up with the steel bar.
The bar creates that sliding effect that you hear that is kind of like the signature sound
of Hawai'i.
[STEEL GUITAR]
The signature sound started to spread.
When he was thirty, Kekuku decided to leave Hawai'i.
He took his invention and his passion for Hawaiian
music with him.
[STEEL GUITAR]
And now, the Silver Medal for Best Overall Story, Middle School Division, goes to ...
From Maui, Seabury Hall Middle School.
[APPLAUSE]
Here's a scene from the Silver Medalist for Best Overall Story Middle School Division,
"Haleakala Mules," by Seabury Hall Middle School on Maui.
Haleakala National Park on Maui has been using mules since the 1930s.
The crater was designated as a national park in 1916, and it is protected
by the Federal Wilderness Act which states: An area where the
earth and its community of life are untrammeled by men.
There shall be no temporary road, no use of motor vehicles, no landing of aircraft.
Well, we use mules here in Haleakala because Haleakala is a designated wilderness, so in
general, there's a restriction.
There's no motorized vehicles, motorized equipment, period, allowed.
During the 1930s, the trail system and the wilderness cabins were constructed by the
Civilian Conservation Corps.
The mules carried all of the lumber, and all of the food and supplies for the crews that
built the cabins, and the trails.
Almost a century later, Michael McKinnon, the current animal caretaker, is preparing
to lead his mules into the crater on a twenty-eight-mile roundtrip
journey.
What do you say, Lefty?
He and his co-workers are packing supplies to maintain the cabin and assist in conservation
projects.
And now for the top award in this category, the Gold Medal for Best Overall Story, Middle
School Division, and the $1,000 of production equipment
go to ...
Wai'anae Intermediate School.
[CHEERS/APPLAUSE]
And now, here's the Gold Medalist for Best Overall Story, Middle School Division, "A
Home for Larenzo," by Wai'anae Intermediate School
on O'ahu.
So, it's seventeen to twenty-one.
Wai'anae Intermediate School seventh-grader Larenzo Tagura-Bear, is a star athlete, an
honor roll student and a leader, when he is not joking around
with his friends.
[INDISTINCT] [CHUCKLE]
For the past two years, Larenzo has been entertaining his friends at his after-school home, the
Wai'anae Boys and Girls Club.
When I first moved to Wai'anae ... my mom over the summer, she put me in the club.
Since becoming a member, Larenzo, like the nearly four million students the Boys and
Girls Club of America serves, found a place to do homework,
hang out and form friendships.
Larenzo was the vice president for my leadership program for the ten to twelve-year-olds.
He was the greatest peer leader for the other kids there.
He would come straight from after school and stay 'til
closing.
Because of this dedication and late hours, Johna Leedy would drop him off to where she
thought was his home, until ...
One day, I seen him crossing the street.
We had tents, and when it was windy, stormy, we always had to strap down with tape.
We always had to build fire to cook food.
The Wai'anae community has more homeless than anywhere else in the state of Hawai'i. Larenzo
is just one of the approximately 1.7 million youth
who are homeless every year in the nation.
It was in here where Larenzo lived with twelve other people.
Being homeless ... my mom never really called it homeless.
She called it houseless.
You don't have much food, but we try.
Um ... I'm sorry.
I used to sleep there.
I chose to stay with my mom because I figured I could help her out a little, 'cause
she was having a hard time.
Larenzo being homeless was unacceptable for Boys and Girls Club director Lana Keamo.
Your actions gotta speak louder than your words.
You gotta show.
I cannot just tell the kids I love them, and find out that they're homeless and not
invite them in.
For the next year, Ms. Keamo provided a home for Larenzo.
She believes our country needs to unite to solve the homeless issue.
If every organization in the nation would take in one homeless child, the world would
be a much ... brighter place.
Larenzo has since moved out of Ms. Keamo's residence, and he is no longer homeless.
And now, the final category of the 2017 HIKI NŌ Awards, Best Overall Story, High School
Division.
Let's see which schools were nominated in this category.
Nominated for Best Overall Story, High School Division:
H.P. Baldwin High School on Maui for "Life After Sugar,"
Kapa'a High School on Kaua'i for "Iloreta Brothers,"
Konawaena High School on Hawai'i Island for "A Love Story,"
Maui High School on Maui for "Deaf Cheerleader" and
Wai'anae High School on O'ahu for "Without Home."
The Bronze Medal for Best Overall Story, High School Division, goes to ...
Maui High School.
[CHEERS/APPLAUSE]
And here's a scene from the Bronze Medalist for Best Overall Story, High School Division,
"Deaf Cheerleader," by Maui High School.
Maui High School junior varsity cheerleader Chantal Sandoval spends her weekends spreading
cheer.
But what makes this extraordinary is the fact that Chantal is legally deaf.
Here is Chantal, speaking through an interpreter.
I was just born that way.
When my mother gave birth to me ... she almost died.
And then, I don't know, I became deaf.
Her deafness, however, has not denied her from pursuing her dream of cheering in front
of a crowd.
Cheering was something I always wondered about, and I just wanted to know if I could make
the team.
However, Chantal's journey to becoming a cheerleader for her school was not an easy one, even with
the help of sign language interpreters who helped
facilitate communication between Chantal and her coach.
The Silver Medal for Best Overall Story, High School Division, goes to ...
Wai'anae High School.
[APPLAUSE]
Let's take a look at an excerpt from the Silver Medalist for Best Overall Story, High School
Division, "Without Home," by Wai'anae High School on
O'ahu.
For me, it's a community.
It's not just one encampment, yeah?
We all watch over the area, the kids, make sure everybody's okay.
Yeah, this place is about [INDISTINCT], you know you going be okay.
Each morning, nineteen-year-old Adam Naki has something to do.
You gotta haul your own water.
You gotta make sure you buy your own generator so you get electricity
for charge all your things.
[INDISTINCT], bring me the rake.
Always cleaning, twenty-four/seven.
Adam is homeless.
She has moved twelve times before finally settling here at Hale 'Aole in Wai'anae.
While situations like this aren't ideal, residents believe it's a good place.
Yes, this community needs to be united to function well, only because living in this
community, coming together, everybody has to get along.
According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, Hawai'i has the highest number
of homeless people relative to their population.
It's an issue that has divided the state for a while now.
Now, for the top award in this category, the Gold Medal for Best Overall Story, High School
Division, and the $1,000 of production equipment goes
to ...
This is the big one ... Kapa'a High School, on the island of Kaua'i.
[CHEERS/APPLAUSE]
And now, the Gold Medal winner in the Best Overall Story, High School Division, "Iloreta
Brothers," by Kapa'a High School on Kaua'i.
My brother Jason and I are going to run a half-marathon.
Are you ready?
That's thirteen miles.
That's double what we did.
Ever since high school, Josh Iloreta has wanted to run in a marathon.
His younger brother Jason is helping him to fulfill that dream.
We decided to do these runs after being inspired by Dick and Rick Hoyt.
He's been actually running with his son, who has cerebral palsy, in triathlons,
marathons, all these different races, for a number of years
already.
I Am My Ability, I Am Not My Disability, highlights someone's capabilities, someone's human
abilities, is a campaign that Josh and I sort of thought about when we decided to run marathons.
[STARTING HORN/INDISTINCT CHEERS]
If a person can communicate, they can show how to love, how to laugh, like, that's the
most important part in life.
I think the number-one hardship or the number-one difficulty for someone with special needs
is breaking that barrier that society has, that misconception that because you have special
needs or because you have a diagnosis, that you are
limited to certain things.
With my brother, people automatically think that he can't understand
what people are saying, or that he can't really move about.
What people don't understand is that they're all there.
They're consciously there, their cognitive abilities
are still there.
They just can't maybe speak or walk.
I like to swim and go bowling.
I love listening to music.
He likes to just go to the mall and just hanging out at Starbucks or having lunch, or just
hanging out, doing brotherly things.
[MUSIC]
This concludes the 2017 HIKI NŌ Awards.
Congratulations to all of the nominees and medalists.
You have made your peers, parents, teachers, principals,
and all of Hawai'i proud.

BREAKING New Huma Abedin Emails Revealed, Hillary's In BIG TROUBLE… - Duration: 10:41.BREAKING New Huma Abedin Emails Revealed, Hillary's In BIG TROUBLE…
Judicial Watch, which is pretty much the only organization looking out for us peons in the
political swamp called Washington D.C. made a major discovery this week.
They have sued the State Department and have just obtained new emails showing Hillary "Cackles"
Clinton and her Muslim Brotherhood friendly Huma Abedin "Weiner" sending even more
classified information of importance to our national security.
From Judicial Watch:
"Judicial Watch today released 1,184 pages of State Department records, including previously
unreleased Hillary Clinton email exchanges, revealing additional instances of Abedin and
Hillary Clinton sending classified information through unsecured email accounts and contributors
being given special access to the former secretary of state.
The emails, were obtained in response to a court order from a May 5, 2015, Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed against the State Department after it failed to respond
to a March 18 FOIA request (Judicial Watch, Inc. v. U.S. Department of State (No. 1:15-cv-00684))."
What did they find?
"The records contain 29 previously undisclosed Clinton emails – of a total of which is
now at least 288 emails that were not part of the 55,000 pages of emails that Clinton
turned over to the State Department.
This further appears to contradict statements by Clinton that, "as far as she knew,"
all of her government emails were turned over to the State Department.
Two of these emails are now available on the State Department's website."
What was in the newly uncovered emails, 29 in all which were previously undisclosed,
because we all know, Hillary can't recall, was nothing short of Treason.
One of the emails recovered showed "former GTMO [Guantanamo] detainee Binyam Mohamed"
and Mohamed's request for "various classified intelligence documents."
Which the US intelligence had related to his detention in Guantanamo Bay Prison.
There was also another email telling of an unsuccessful effort to set up a phone meeting
between Killary and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Go figure.
Isn't that exactly what she was accusing President Trump of doing just yesterday?
I guess it's one of those famous "Definition of Sex" explanations her husband gave when
he was caught getting a BJ in the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office back in the 90s.
Of course, the emails also covered other topics.
Apparently, there was a lot of friction between staffers, which is no surprise considering
the caliber and ethics of people who work in politics.
"A March 9, 2010, email exchange between Abedin and Band reveals some tension between
Clinton's top personal aide and the former secretary of state's chief of staff, Cheryl
Mills.
The apparent rift was revealed when Chelsea Clinton asked Band if he could arrange a White
House tour for a female Haitian-American sailor from the USS Comfort.
Band passed the request to Abedin, who replied to Band: "I don't want to get cross wise
with cdm [Cheryl Mills] on anything Haiti related" and "HAVE YOU MET CHERYL MILLS?
[Emphasis in original] you have no idea.""
There were also emails planning the funeral arrangements for Hillary and Bill Clinton.
"Clinton friend Capricia Marshall asked Band and Abedin to work with her to plan Bill
and Hillary Clinton's funeral arrangements and notes: "once affirmed it will be very
hard for someone to deny the type of ceremony she [Hillary] wanted – as well I understand
that the President can request certain arrangements for her that she/her rep cannot (ie if you
want the motorcade to go through DC – stop somewhere).""
That's downright creepy, I mean, who does that?
Many may ask, "Why keep uncovering these emails?, Who cares?"
Easy answer, because we have every right to know who the person who may very well have
become president really is.
We all know she should answer for this blatant disregard for the national security of this
nation, but we know all too well laws are only for us peons.
They are above us!Trump Just Scored MASSIVE Victory That The Mainstream Media REFUSES
To Report For One SICK Reason
The left cannot stand that America is reemerging as a superpower in the world.
For the past 8 years, Obama did his best to knock the United States off its pedestal.
However, Obama and his leftist minions underestimated the American spirit and we are ready to reclaim
our power.
Since Donald Trump has been sworn in as president he is keeping his campaign promises.
Trump is focused on making sure the American people win and not the globalists.
Trump is making sure that jobs return to our country which only can benefit us all.
For instance, Ford Motor Co. is about to announce new investments in Michigan.
Reports reveal that the automobile giant is planning on investing a "significant amount"
in assembly plants in Michigan.
This news comes only two months after the company announced it would invest $700 million
in Michigan plants.
But, that is not the only car maker that is investing in America.
There are reports now that others such as Toyota and Fiat, also plan to invest in America.
Oh, but it gets even better that folks.
Other companies have announced that they will come to America since Trump is president.
That list includes 45,000 jobs announced by Exxon Mobil, 10,000 new jobs at Kroger, 10,000
jobs at Walmart, another 10,000 jobs to be offered by U.S. Steel, and 50,000 by SoftBank
Telecommunications, among many others.
That is fantastic news, right?
Well, it is not fantastic news if you are liberal.
he mainstream media is not reporting any of this and that is disgusting.
They are royally ticked off that Trump is keeping his promises and that goes against
their narrative.
You see, the left wants to make everyone believe that Trump is a failure and an illegitimate
president.
If they can do that then they can easily create more division in the country.
Well, sorry liberals we know the truth and Trump is winning which means all of us are
too.
H/T [ Breitbart ]BREAKING Hillary Clinton Just CAUGHT Stealing Classified Secrets!
THIS IS BAD!
Hillary Clinton is in BIG trouble now!
She has already had her share of scandals, but the report just released by FOX News will
prove beyond ANY doubt this woman is DANGEROUS! Hillary Clinton had access to TOP SECRET information
while running for office!
I don't know about you, but this sounds like straight up STEALING to me!
According to FOX,
When Hillary Clinton resigned as Secretary of State in 2013, she negotiated continuing
access to classified and top-secret documents for herself and six staffers under the designation
"research assistants," according to a powerful senator who notes that Clinton was
later deemed "extremely careless" with such information.
The most disturbing part is that, according to Sen. Chuck Grassley, her staff CONTINUED
to have access even after she announced her run for President in 2015!
Grassley immediately took his message to Secretary Rex Tillerson, who he told,
"…Recently, the State Department informed the Committee that six additional Secretary
Clinton staff at State were designated as her research assistants which allowed them
to retain their clearances after leaving the Department."
The next big question is WHICH assistants had access?
Was it…
Huma Abedin?
Cheryl Mills?
VP of her Campaign Jake Sullivan?
These are VERY serious accusations.
We know Hillary has no problem cheating, but this is WAY beyond sabotaging Bernie Sanders. This
would mean that she AND the Obama White House were working together AFTER she resigned and
they may have even given her UNCONSTITUTIONAL assistance during the race!
We gotta get this out.
There is no time to waste!

Bomb About What She's Doing With The Money
On what should be a glorious day for feminists everywhere, Ivanka is officially taking her
role as Presidential advisor and moving into her West Wing office at the White House.
Somehow, though, the joy of the normally supportive left has been absent.
Could this be because the agenda is less about breaking the glass ceiling and more about
breaking the backs of conservatives?
Regardless, President Trump has given his daughter the opportunity to champion women's
issues by advising him about how he can best serve the family unit.
She and husband Jared are both in the process of getting the proper security clearances
and government issued electronic devices.
The initial report was that Ivanka wouldn't collect a salary at all, but according to
Red State, it looks as if she may follow in her father's footsteps and collect a check
that would be donated to charity.
This is sometimes done as a formality because of government policies that frown on anyone
working for the government for free.
Despite all this, there are many who are still very much upset that she has a White House
role at all.Apparently, we are all expected to turn a blind eye to anything that a democrat
does, but a conservative business person who graduated with honors from Wharton can't
possibly be qualified for a civilian advisory position that many non-politicians before
her have taken.
I'm not even sure the left is even trying to be impartial at this point, they are just
upset and don't care who knows about it.
If the President knows that he works well with his daughter and son in law, and doesn't
have to go through the process of getting to know new people and how they work, it seems
to me that it would just expedite the efficient operation of this administration.
But heaven forbid that we don't calm the extreme fear of liberals that conservatives
aren't ethical.

prove beyond ANY doubt this woman is DANGEROUS!

Steve Mnuchin is wrong Robots really could take your job - tech and science - Duration: 2:12.Steve Mnuchin is wrong: Robots really could take your job
This hasnt been a good week for Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
First it came out that the department he leads is in the midst of an internal power struggle
between moderates and populist purists.
Now his comment on Friday that downplayed the threat of robots taking human jobs
has been debunked.
When asked about the threat to employment posed by fully autonomous robots that
is, machines that dont need to be operated by humans and can replace humans at their
jobs Mnuchin told Axios, Its not even on our radar screen . . . 50-100 more
years away.
After reiterating that he was not worried at all, Mnuchin added, In fact Im
optimistic.
A new study by the National Bureau of Economic research has shown that every fully autonomous
robot added to an American factory has reduced employment by 6.2 workers, according to a
report by BuzzFeed.
The study also found that for every fully autonomous robot per 1,000 workers, the employment
rate declined 0.18 to 0.34 percentage points and wages dipped 0.25 to 0.5 percentage points.
We estimate large and robust negative effects of robots on employment and wages across commuting
zones, economists Daron Acemoglu of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and
Pascual Restrepo of Boston University wrote in the study.
They also pointed out that the impact of robots is distinct from the impact of imports
from China and Mexico, the decline of routine jobs, offshoring, other types of IT capital,
and the total capital stock (in fact, exposure to robots is only weakly correlated with these
other variables).

Elisabeth Roudinesco - O principal fator para o desenvolvimento da psicanálise - Duration: 3:23.Psychoanalysis never managed to be implemented
in countries where there's no democracy and no rule of law.
In other words,
in order to have access to your unconsciousness,
for someone to be free for exploring their unconsciousness,
it's necessary to have rule of law and democracy.
Especially the rule of law, in other words,
a State in which subjective freedom
is guaranteed. It's necessary to have political freedom
in order to have access to the determinations of the unconsciousness.
We've seen this in Latin America. Psychoanalysis...
This is regardless the fact that psychoanalysts
may collaborate with dictatorships,
I'm talking about psychoanalysis as a movement.
It was forbidden during Nazism,
forbidden in communist countries,
totally outlawed in Islamic countries,
and in Latin America, during the dictatorships,
even if psychoanalysts have contributed,
it was very hard to exercise it despite all,
because there was permanent police pressure.
In other words, it could only be implemented on democratic countries.
And that's the real reason why
it wasn't implemented
for example in African countries,
where it was substituted by something else. That's not cultural,
it's the political system. For example,
in Japan, there's a very important psychoanalyst movement,
and that's not a western culture country. It was implemented from the moment
democracy occurred. It's a paradox, because
it was born in the world of the Austro-Hungarian Empire
and not in a democracy. But, at the same time,
we perceive Freud's political stance, who was a liberal,
he was an enlightened conservative, liberal in politics,
I said a conservative, and not a reactionary,
deep down, to him, the best political system
was the English constitutional monarchy. Freud was an anglophile,
he did not like one bit about the republic,
he did not like them to cut the heads of kings, he preferred
constitutional monarchy with a dash of communitarianism.
But he was born on this Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Then, of course, generations of psychoanalysts
flourished exclusively in democratic countries.
But, also, it's in these countries that it is ending,
vanishing, somehow. It's a paradox,
and I don't know under which form it will reappear. But
it is antagonist to all forms of nationalism.
I can tell you that in France, the National Front
does not like anything about Freud and psychoanalysis.
