What's Up Star Wars Fans?
My name is Prince, and I am an Urban Acolyte.
This is going to be my full breakdown from the first Official Trailer from The Last Jedi.
I'm going to do my best to stick to what we saw in the trailer, and any ideas that I have
from stuff I saw are going to be there own video, so expect a few more videos this week
based on stuff that I saw in the trailer or sort of "what if" speculation type videos.
But anyway--we finally got a real glimpse of the trailer so GET HYPE for The Last Jedi
coming in December--and if you haven't already gotten your tickets, make sure to get those.
I've got mine, for December 14th, so be expecting a No Spoiler video coming from me either really
late that Thursday night or early Friday morning.
Before I get into the trailer breakdown, I just want to say that if you're new here,
I talk about Star Wars, the underlying themes in Star Wars, and how to incorporate Jedi
teachings into your daily life.
I usually make videos about Star Wars Episode 8, The Last Jedi about 3 times a week, and
I run a live stream about Star Wars news at least once day, so if this stuff sounds good
to you, make sure to subscribe to the channel and enable notifications so that you'll know
when I'm posting new videos or going live to talk about all things Star Wars related.
Okay, so let's jump right into this and take a deeper look at this trailer-- so the first
thing we see is some type of weapons factory.
Kylo Ren is watching the floor, and there looks to be some chicken walkers coming off
an assembly line off to the left.
The next shot takes us from the assembly line to a shot of those new heavy assault walkers
that are being called Gorilla Walkers.
There's also a First Order ship just above them.
This shot looks like it's on Crait--so remember, in the teaser we saw the gorilla walkers off
in the distance, but here we're getting to see them up close.
So it's like we're seeing that the First Order is more than just Starkiller Base-- so much
more, and we hear Snoke's voice speaking with someone.
We go to a shot of Kylo Ren being flanked by First Order flametroopers--at least I think
they are flame troopers, and I believe they are going into a mine on Crait.
Here's a question--why would Kylo Ren take a group of flame troopers into a mine?
Obviously they are going to set something on fire, but I'm curious about him leading
this particular mission--why couldn't Phasma or even a high ranking Stormtrooper lead them
to do whatever it is they've set out to do--so maybe there's something special about Crait
that has something to do with the Force--like if there are kyber crystals on Crait, only
Kylo Ren would be capable of sensing them without some kind of special machinery.
So we go back to a closeup shot of Kylo Ren with this red background.
He's wearing his helmet here, and he looks to be kneeling to pick up his lightsaber.
If you look closely, you can see the robes of Snoke's Praetorian Guard, so I think this
might be a shot of Kylo Ren presenting his new lightsaber to Snoke.
I've been under the assumption that Rey damaged Kylo Ren's previous lightsaber in their fight
on Starkiller Base, so I think this is a newer, updated design.
Maybe this scene will be a conversation between Snoke and Kylo Ren where we learn about Kylo
Ren's humiliation and what may be driving him to save face and get back at Rey--Who
knows, Snoke might threaten to replace him with Rey, or tell him that he reached out
to Rey to tell her to strike him down once he sensed that Kylo Ren had lost the fight.
It's also at this point that we're led to believe Snoke has been speaking to Kylo Ren
this entire time.
He says,"When I found you, I saw RAW, untamed Power, and beyond that something truly special."
But when he says "something truly special," we get a shot of Rey igniting her lightsaber
on Ach-To with Luke.
We get an overhead shot of Ach-To, and this is a place of mystery for all of us--especially
those of us interested in the mythology behind the Force, the various Force related religions
that Rogue One and the Force Awakens have introduced to us, and especially the origins
of the Jedi.
Jeddha is supposed to be this holy place where pilgrims go to sort of pay homage to the Force
at the Temple of the Kyber, but it seems like everything, for the Jedi, started here at
Ach-To--so one of the things I hope the movie will begin to explain is how and why the Jedi
Order started on this remote planet.
Here the trailer picks up where the Force Awakens ends--with Rey handing the lightsaber
back to Luke atop that cliff on Ach-To, and Rey begins to speak.
She says,"Something inside me has always been there, and now it's awake, and I need help."
If you listen to Rey's voice--this is a different voice from The Force Awakens.
This isn't the voice of "a Mary Sue," this Rey is asking for help.
She sounds afraid.
This is the voice speaking that just witnessed the Force back vision who ran away from Maz
and wanted nothing to do with any of this--this is the Rey who is stepping into the world
of the mysteries, and we literally see that when Rey is walking into the fog in one shot
on Ach-To.
We get this beautiful shot of Rey stopping the lightsaber at this rock-- I said in a
live video that I felt like Rey was demonstrating her control over the Force...and in a way,
she has, but she hasn't.
Let's go back to the Visual Guide from The Force Awakens where it was established that
Rey's fighting skill with her staff translates well into other short-ranged melee weapons,
including those she's never used before--like a lightsaber.
So I thought this was Rey showing more control over the Force, but it's actually just Rey
is getting better with using this lightsaber.
I said all of that to set up the next shot--which is Luke's reaction to when this rock splits.
So I actually think this sequence of shots is out of order.
I think that Luke was instructing Rey on how to follow her breath to sense the Force.
It was the meditation technique that Obi-Wan taught Luke, and Luke subsequently taught
it to Leia.
I think when Rey began to meditate that she reached out and the pebbles began to levitate,
but then the ground splits open.
Now you guys know me--this had a very Buddhist feel to it, right?
You know the scene in Bodh Gaya when the Buddha is meditating, and it's at the moment of his
Enlightenment, he reaches down to touch the ground and testify that the Earth is his witness
that he has attained Nirvana.
Lotus blossoms start to spring up from the ground and all this kind of thing--but this
is the opposite for Rey--she reaches down, things start to levitate--like we saw this
with Ezra when he lost control and tapped into the Dark Side with the Grand Inquisitor,
right?
We've seen this before-- he summoned that big creature--in Rey's case, she splits the
ground open.
She didn't just break a rock, she like literally formed a crack in a mountain.
Luke is freaked out and says,"I've seen this raw strength only once before."
Question--who is Luke talking about?
Was he talking about Kylo Ren?
Was he talking about someone else?
I'm under the assumption that it's someone Luke has instructed, so that would rule out
Palpatine.
Maybe Snoke was a former student of Luke's...Luke taught Leia--so what if Luke was talking about
Leia?
The trailer has us believe that it's Kylo Ren.
We see a shot of who we think is Luke climbing out of a burning pile of wood, and we next
see a shot of Luke kneeling in front of a burning temple with R2 at his side--and I
should say that we're led to believe this is Luke from when the Jedi were destroyed
by Kylo Ren, but if you look back at the shot of whoever that is climbing out of the wood--that
robotic hand is a left hand.
Luke right hand was severed.
Who is that climbing out of that pile?
Also-- is the shot of the burning temple, is that really when the Luke's Jedi were wiped
out by Kylo Ren?
I think we're going to get the full story behind how Kylo Ren earned the nickname "Jedi
Killer."
I don't want to get too deep into my thoughts on that, but this idea of Rey having "raw,
untamed power" that she can't really control leads me to think that Kylo Ren may have accidentally
destroyed the Jedi Order.
I'm sorry, but I came away from The Force Awakens feeling that he wasn't skilled enough
to kill off all of the Jedi, except for Luke, without help or like, killing them off in
their sleep--but if he somehow lost control of his power because he's unstable and just...well,
a freak of nature when it comes to the Force--that makes a whole lot more sense--I mean, isn't
that a fairly common thing in Marvel Comics stories?
I'm thinking of my man, Robbie or Speedball, when he had that incident that killed those
children and caused him to take on the persona of Penance.
Anyway--I don't want to go all in on a Kylo Ren speculation, if y'all want me to go deeper
on that, let me know because I'm considering a video all about Kylo Ren as some kind of
tragic hero.
So here we see Luke completely freaked out.
Luke says,"I've seen this raw strength only once before, it didn't scare me enough then.
It does now."
Again, is Luke talking to Rey, and who was he talking about seeing before her?
Also, what is that symbol on the floor to the right of Luke?
So the flow of this trailer implies that Luke has rejected Rey.
Here she is on this ledge.
I don't know if Rey has climbed up on this ledge or if she falls off of it.
Remember that picture we saw at the start of the teaser trailer? Rey is wearing her
Resistance outfit in both shots, so I think those are closely related.
Rey looks defeated here, and it's like "I've come all this way, I just bared my soul to
this guy...Luke Skywalker, someone that I've come to admire and see as a hero...and I just
got rejected."
I want you guys to all go back to those videos I did last spring about Luke being this kind
of Zen master who is going to do these strange things in order to force you to gain their
approval.
It's like "Sure kid, you've got the gift, but are you going to work for the reward?
Why should I train you?
What's the point?
What will you do with the teachings?"
We learn that Yoda was prepared for Luke to come to him, but even still--when Luke finally
arrives, he can't see what's right in front of him, and Yoda appears to have given up
on him.
He makes him earn his attention.
So I think this is a misdirection...one of several misdirections in this trailer.
Luke rejects Rey, so Rey has to go elsewhere now that she actually wants to know about
the Force.
We go back to a shot of Kylo Ren in his helmet.
Is this where Rey will turn for help?
Next we see Kylo Ren with his helmet removed.
He smashes his helmet when he punches the wall, and now he is the one speaking,"Let
the past die.
Kill it--if you have to.
That's the only way to become what you were meant to be."
Speaking of Kylo Ren's past, we see what looks to be a space battle involving Leia's command
ship and First Order forces led by Kylo Ren.
Is Ben going to attempt to kill his mother, or is this careful editing?
It could be Leia and the Resistance attempting to leave D'Qar in what I believe is going
to be an assault on their base led by the First Order pretty early into the movie.
Maybe Kylo Ren will be part of that attack, but I'm feeling that he won't be.
What could be interesting is if he actually IS--if this all plays out just like we're
seeing in the trailer, and his tantrum comes from his inability to kill his mother--or
something better--what if this is the point when Leia uses her force abilities to save
the Resistance ships--like if Leia has battle meditation or she just reaches out to Ben
using the Force...I'm going to be looking closely to see how and when Leia uses her
force abilities in Episode 8--because Daisy Ridley leaked, in an interview, last year,
that Leia uses force abilities in this movie...and there was a debate on set about whether or
not Leia is a Jedi by the end of the movie.
This next shot is something interesting.
Where is it?
Is this the Falcon flying through a large crystal mine on Crait?
If it is--this could point to the significance of this planet.
If Crait contains tons of kyber crystals beneath the lava--well, the First Order managed to
advance the Death Star's technology and their Star Destroyers have like these kyber crystal
canons.
They would want Kyber crystals to weaponize...maybe to even construct another Death Star...except
not a Death Star--maybe more ships with the destructive capacity of the Death Star--because
like Grand Admiral Thrawn said,"the Empire would be much unbeatable if they used those
resources to expand the fleet with more Star Destroyers instead of one really big gun."
So this is my prediction--those crystals on Crait might be kyber crystals or something
else, but I think that's why everyone is going to be fighting over the control of this planet,
in addition to the fact that the Resistance has a base there.
Also--here's our mandatory shot to sell some toys.
In the Force Awakens it was featuring BB8 rolling across the desert of Jakku--here,
it's going to be the porgs with Chewie.
Finn and Rose will have some comedic interactions, but Finn is going to be more serious in this
movie, so the big laughs that the kids will understand will all come from Chewie, R2,
and the porgs.
Next we see Poe in distress...and it's significant that we went from Snoke to Luke and Rey to
Kylo Ren and Leia to the stuff going on with the First Order and the Resistance.
It's like "here's all the stuff going on with the Force and the Force wielders, and now
let's talk about the actual conflict because this is STAR WARS--we're building up to a
war.
I like Poe's speech,"We are the spark that'll light the fire that will burn the First Order
down."
I feel like this is going to be that one quote that stays with everyone.
I think it will be a big part of the marketing for the actual conflict going on in the movie--think
of this speech being like Cassian Andor's "Make 10 men feel like 100" in Rogue One.
Like I heard that line, and I was ready to storm the Empire's base on Scarif with Chirrut
and Baze.
So we go from Poe talking about burning down the First Order, and we see Finn, in a First
Order Officer's uniform with Phasma.
There are explosions going off everywhere, and it looks like Finn is helping to literally
burn down the First Order.
He and Phasma are fighting--Phasma is armed with a spear, and Finn has one of those stun
batons that was used against him in The Force Awakens.
We get this awesome shot of Finn being reflected in Phasma's chrome armor, and it makes me
wonder how this fight will go for Finn.
The last time we saw him using melee weapons, things didn't go well for him.
He was beaten by his squad brother, and he managed to get chopped down by Kylo Ren.
If you've seen my Phasma videos, you know that I've said she's on another level--so
I'm curious about the outcome of this fight.
We know going into this that Finn is going to display the real skills that were written
into his backstory but not really highlited in The Force Awakens, and when this movie
starts, Finn is going to still look like that guy who wants to run--my question is how does
Finn turn things around and how skilled will he be?
Last year, John Boyega told us that "everyone expected acrobatic flips and a badass character,
but heroes aren't born in one movie--wait for the trilogy.
Finn ain't playin."
So y'all heard that right?
Finn ain't playin...wait for the trilogy before you start talking about what his character
is and isn't...it's called character development--so this time, Finn's character is going to become
just a little more awesome...and in my opinion, he'll follow a similar path as Kyle Katarn...but
we'll have to wait and see.
We get a shot of BB8 on what looks like Poe's X-Wing fighter.
Things look really bad for the Resistance.
I'm guessing that we'll see a lot of space battles in this movie, and maybe we'll see
a Lando style betrayal at some point.
We don't see Vice Admiral Holdo at all in the trailer--but I think she might pull a
Lando on Leia in this movie, and maybe that will all be connected to one of these space
battle scenes.
We go back to Luke saying "This is not going to go the way you think."
My thoughts are that Rey is undergoing some kind of a test, just like Luke did when he
went into that darkside cave.
This thing about Rey facing a sea monster--this could be connected to that speculation...I'm
not sure, but it sounds like Luke is getting on Rey about her confidence or over confidence--think
of it as being like Yoda's saying to Luke about being afraid,"you will be.
You will be."
Next is this shot of these Crait wolves or foxes.
There's been questions about the Crait foxes having any ties or connections to Ahsoka Tano.
I don't think they do, but I wouldn't rule it out.
What is interesting is that we see them retreating into the Resistance base on Crait. This follows
a shot of Leia who may also be standing at that same location on Crait.
She looks to be in a different outfit, so that's something to look for in the movie.
Something to consider is what if Leia has that animal communication ability like Ezra
has, and she's using the Force to communicate with the Crait foxes?
We get another look at Rey and whatever she is doing in that underwater cavern with Luke.
There's a shot of serious looking Finn walking into that First Order facility that Kylo Ren
was watching at the start of the trailer.
There's another look at the floor.
Here we can see Stormtroopers, TIE fighter pilots, and uniformed officers.
It looks like the First Order is mustering for some major evolution.
The First Order's forces again on Crait, this time they are in a dog fight with the Resistance.
I think this is much later than whatever happens with Finn in that facility because I think
we're going to see Finn flying one of those ski speeders on Crait in this battle.
And then we have the close up shot of Snoke saying to fulfill your destiny.
He's reaching out and he could be using the Force choke or that mind probe ability on
someone--or he could be doing neither.
That shot is followed up with Rey in pain--she's floating and it appears that she's being tortured
by Snoke-- if you look just past her, you can see Snoke's gold robes, and over her right
shoulder there is a Praetorian guard.
Here Rey is dressed in her Jedi Training attire, so I'm led to believe that this is going to
happen later in the movie-- I've seen pictures of Rey with a bruise over her left eyebrow
and a cut on her right arm, so I have a feeling that Rey will end up having to fight her way
out of this--there's also the possibility that this doesn't happen to Rey at all--that
she's experiencing a force vision, but just given how she's dressed, I think that any
force visions would have happened much earlier on Ach-To--unless she's seeing a possible
future-- like if there is a dark side cave type event, Rey could be seeing what happens
if she tries to confront Snoke, just like Luke seeing Vader in that cave on Dagobah.
We'll have to wait and see how this plays out--because right now, I can't see why Rey
would go to Snoke's mobile command.
So the last few shots--this is what has people a bit confused.
Rey says,"I need someone to show me my place in all this."
The trailer is cut to imply that she's speaking with Kylo Ren, and he extends his hand out--implying
that he's reaching out to Rey.
The thing is this--Rey is wearing her Resistance attire and her hair looks the same as when
she first came to Ach-To.
Also, there's a picture of Rey sitting outside the Millennium Falcon parked on Ach-To.
She's sitting in front of a campfire, possibly alone.
I think Rey could be speaking with one of the nuns, R2, maybe even a porg, as silly
as that sounds.
If Ezra Bridger can speak to animals, why can't Rey?
As for Kylo Ren, well, we saw him at the start of the trailer enter a mine with flametroopers.
Maybe he is actually speaking with someone in the First Order.
For all we know, he could be in there striking a deal with Admiral Holdo or even DJ.
I have a lot of questions, but like I said in my reaction video--I don't think Reylo
is going to happen.
I do think there could be some kind of Rey and Kylo Ren team-up eventually--that's only
based on the comment from Rian Johnson about Rey and Kylo Ren sort of being linked together
or both being necessary.
It's like they are both heroes, so there's something Kylo Ren and Rey both have to accomplish.
My personal opinion is Rey will represent the Ashla, and Kylo Ren will represent the
Bogan--they're two complimentary pairs who oppose one another but need each other two--like
we look at the Force as lightside is the good guys and dark side is the bad guys--but the
Force is just one thing made up of a lot of smaller things.
To be in balance or in harmony requires both, the dark and the light-- and if we're going
to expand Star Wars...well, sometimes the dark side can be good...so I think Kylo Ren
will continue down the path of the dark side, but he can still perform acts that we might
consider heroic.
We'll just have to wait and see...and I'll revisit that in a video specifically about
Kylo Ren as I get deeper into some topics that have come up while breaking down this
trailer, but I want to hear from all of you...because I've talked enough in this video.
What did you guys like about the trailer?
What did you not like--it can be anything, we didn't see Rose, DJ, or Vice Admiral Holdo,
for instance.
