Now, let's move on to the main part of our video:

We take for granted having good enough hearing to watch movies without having to read the

subtitle "sound of leaves rustling" or hear an oncoming vehicle before we step out

into the street, but debilitating hearing loss might be more common than you think.

The World Health Organization in 2017 reported that 360 million people – 5 percent of the

world's population – have disabling hearing loss, and 32 million of these unfortunate

people are children.

As we age, our hearing often gets worse, with a third of everyone on the planet over the

age of 65 being affected by disabling hearing loss.

The WHO also states that while hearing loss is often congenital, it can be acquired.

1.1 billion young people are potentially ruining their hearing due to the loudness of their

environment.

Today we'll discuss some of these noises, in this episode of the Infographics Show,

Loudest Things a Person Can Hear.

Don't forget to subscribe and click the bell button so that you can be part of our

Notification Squad.

First let's talk a little more about hearing the softest sounds.

Sound is measured in decibels, with low range noise being things such as light rainfall,

or as we mentioned in the intro, the rustling of leaves.

It's thought such sounds range from 30-50 decibels.

The sound of one of those rustling leaves falling to the ground does make a sound, and

is about 10 decibels, but that will be inaudible most of the time.

We may start to hear something like the hum of a lightbulb if we listen carefully, and

that is around 15 decibels.

Whispering is said to be about 40 decibels and normal talking about 60 decibels, although

from our other shows you might find that depends on which country you come from.

An ambulance or police car flying down the street with its siren blaring is very loud,

about 125 decibels.

This is the kind of sound that you don't want to be exposed to for too long as it could

damage your hearing.

It's also about as loud as the loudest human voice can scream or shout, something naughty

children may have been exposed to once too often.

Guinness Records tells us the loudest ever sports crowd were Kansas City Chiefs fans

when they played the Seattle Seahawks in 2014.

The crowd reached 142 decibels.

It's thought that at about 140 decibels we will feel pain in our ears, and being exposed

to that kind of sound too much will almost definitely lead to some damage.

Sounds of more than 150 decibels could rupture your eardrum if you are close enough.

Ok, so let's now look at some of the loudest things we can hear.

We'll start with the extreme, and move on to regular day-to-day sounds.

According to various sources, the loudest thing that could have ever been heard while

humans have inhabited the planet and recorded events was the eruption of a volcano in 1883

on the island of Krakatoa, located between Java and Sumatra in Indonesia.

More than 35,000 people died, mostly because of the tsunamis the eruption created.

Tidal changes were even recorded as far away as the English Channel.

What's also frightening is the noise this eruption emitted, which was said to have ruptured

the eardrums of people 25 miles away (40km).

The sound was even heard in Perth, Western Australia, which is 1,930 miles away (3,110

km), and some sources say it could be heard even 3,000 miles (4,800 km) away.

This is tantamount to something happening in London and it being heard in Nigeria.

Other sources state that if you were up to 100 miles (160 km) away, you would have heard

a series of bangs measuring about 180 decibels.

That's a lot more ruptured eardrums.

According to firearms websites, that's quite a bit louder than one of the loudest guns,

the .44 Magnum revolver, which reaches about 164 decibels.

Moving away from the noises of nature, let's now have a look at the loudest sounds created

by humans.

If you have listened to the stories of soldiers who have been close to bombs going off, you'll

know that that can cause instant damage to the ears, which for some soldiers of the past

has led to ongoing problems such as tinnitus.

The loudest of these explosions would be the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

in Japan.

It's thought these reached around 240 decibels.

If, however, you were anywhere near those bombs you probably wouldn't be alive to

tell the story, and damaged ears would be the least of your problems.

A 1-Ton TNT Bomb is thought to produce a sound of around 210 decibels.

Much smaller explosives are hand grenades, and though there are many types, it's thought

most have a killing radius of about 2-3 meters and a wounding radius of more than 15 meters.

On top of that, they also have a bang of around 180 decibels, which US military training manuals

state is enough to cause "deafness, tinnitus, and inner ear disturbance".

Another of our manmade sounds is that of the rocket launch.

Of course you can't stand very close to a rocket when it's taking off, but even

at a distance it is very loud.

The loudest ever rocket recorded was NASA's Saturn V rocket, which was said to have reached

around 205 decibels.

It is perhaps worse on the ears than a bomb, as the noise is constant for a while.

Keeping with vehicles but looking at sports, the loudest things we have are Top Fuel dragsters.

These incredibly fast machines can produce noise of up to 160 decibels.

Dragsters, however, are no match for some animals.

Probably one of the scariest things you could ever be up close to is the roar of a lion.

In the wild that could very well be the last thing you hear, a noise that reaches around

114 decibels.

But the top two noisiest animals live in the sea, and both are louder than the sound of

a jet engine at just 100 feet (140-50 decibels).

The loudest is the scream of the Pistol shrimp, also known as the snapping shrimp.

This strange underwater creature will snap closed its large claw so hard it shoots jets

of water.

This forms bubbles which then implode and create a noise of about 200 decibels.

Because it's underwater, humans wouldn't be affected by the noise, but other shrimp

might want to get out of the way.

The next loudest animal is the whistle of the blue whale, which can reach 188 decibels

and can be heard by other whales up to 497 miles (800km) away.

But what about the dangers of noise in circumstances we might come across on any given day?

According to Gibson.com, the loudest band in the history of rock concerts was Kiss,

who when performing in Ottawa, Canada, in 2009 reached a peak of 136 decibels.

Other bands that almost reached this noise intensity include electronic outfit Leftfield,

heavy metal band, Manowar, and British rockers Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.

Not surprisingly, many musicians complain of hearing loss and tinnitus.

While most jobs ensure that your ears will be protected in a noisy environment, these

rock musicians likely didn't wear earplugs all the time.

Other noisy work environments that do require hearing safety measures include airport ground

staff (140 decibels), Formula One drivers (135 decibels), and construction workers (up

to 120 decibels).

Even nightclubs can get very loud and damage the ears of party goers and staff.

Most nightclubs will have sound systems that generate sound at around 85 decibels – the

safe limit according to most governments - but some clubs will reach 115 decibels.

Most people listening to devices such as iPods will listen at around 85 decibels or less,

but it is thought some devices will reach 100-115 decibels.

At this level, doctors warn us that hearing damage could occur after prolonged use.

As a comparison, a chainsaw only reaches 110 decibels, and it wouldn't seem very sensible

to listen to that for a few hours.

This year, Vice magazine reported on what it called the loudest sound system in the

world, something that if turned up could "melt your face off and boil your organs."

It's not a musical sound system per se, but a generator of noise called the Large

European Acoustic Facility.

According to Vice, it creates noise in a chamber to "simulate the environment that a spacecraft

will come into contact with."

It reaches 154 decibels.

So, what is the loudest thing you've ever heard?

Strawberry Organic Fertilization and Irrigation - VLOG - Duration: 5:03.

Hello everyone. welcome to one more Vlog.

Today I'm going to get some doubts about the strawberry planting

The people have written to us. they've had doubts as to how to fertilize

then every 15 days we put a little humus

which is the product of our composter, he goes with some worms

and we put some

How much is this little ?? I do not measure right!

I put a thin layer You can see that ?

a thin layer is sufficient

And he goes with some earthworm.

This is the product of the composter. I have already shown here in the channel as it is to sift

and remove this organic matter from this way

so if you have any questions about how make the compound

just click on the "Card" and watch the video

the earth always goes down a little

and I complete more or less every 15 days

so I'm replenishing the nutrients

we had a problem with our which was as follows

you can see that so little and small

This is because it was very hot around here. more than usual

so we did two things to make it easier

Now they are going back to normal look this one from here like it is lush!

Here are some beautiful ones! Here's a set here!

This set is at the time of harvesting. including

Now you can eat

But now I do not want to. now I want to show

First we put this sombrite 50%

even so the sun was very strong! we decided to do a water installation only for the strawberries

I took advantage of faucet

And I used this same level hose. a reducer

and several drippers one on each column - each pet bottle tower

this router is very cheap in the market

and here you regulate both the water outlet

You can be strong here in the faucet to stay dripping only

leave very weak. Marcia openend now just to show you

and he also has regulation of it has some who have others

That's enough! no waste of water

This dripper as I said has a regulation

is 0 to 40 liters per hour but you will control manually

Look how dripping it is.

it has several models and it has improved very good! I was very dry and then

We put this on system has improved a lot

because we were not able to watering all the time

it's very very hot! It's a little better today because it rained yesterday

It's already dripping on this one!

It's already in the last towers.

the drip is already in the last bottles and enough is enough

You can turn it off.

strawberry is very fond of water but the must be permeable and the water must drain easily.

Do the closing:this is it for those who were waiting to see our little strawberries

Look at this one from here!

huge!

If you have any further questions can write here. as far as

We can respond And if you're new here and not yet

plant strawberries. We have video teaching how to

planting, how to replant and how to the vertical garden

We have video teaching how to prepare compost,

to have fertilizer, good soil to feed the strawberries

I hope you enjoyed! leave your like in this video and share with your friends

and we'll see you in the next video

hum ... worse: this is very good!

Worse???? !!!!!

It's really good

it's on point...

MI VOTU E MI RIVOTU | SAD SICILIAN SONG - Duration: 3:32.

I turn and turn again sighing

I spend whole nights awake

I admire your beauty

and see the whole night pass until dawn

Because of you now I no longer sleep

My aching heart has no more peace

Because of you now I no longer sleep

My aching heart has no more peace

O dove, walking along the seashore,

stop that I must ask you a couple words

stop so I can take a plume off your wings

to write letters to my love.

I write you letters, two, three

My aching heart has no more peace

I turn and turn again sighing

Do you know why i have to leave you

my life ends and dies

do you want to know when i have to leave you

when my life..ends and dies

DACA: Why America needs to keep the dreamers | IN 60 SECONDS - Duration: 1:22.

President Trump recently ended DACA, the program protecting nearly 700,000 undocumented immigrants

whose families brought them to the United States when they were children.

The program will be in place for the next six months, giving Congress time to provide

a legislative solution for these undocumented immigrants, commonly called Dreamers.

A study published by the Cato Institute finds that over the next decade, DACA recipients

will add hundreds of billions of dollars to the economy, and billions of dollars to the

federal Treasury.

Many hold good paying jobs.

They spend money in their communities, supporting employment themselves.

A large share are pursuing higher education, and will add significant value to the economy

when they finish their undergraduate or graduate degree.

But more is at stake than economics.

The United States gave the Dreamers security, relieving them of the fear of a knock on the

door one day, a life shattered, a forceful return to a country they do not know.

Once given, a great nation doesn't take that assurance away.

A morally serious nation doesn't extend the hand of welcome to someone one day and

then shove him out the door the next.

Congress should act to protect the Dreamers.

Excerpt from Verdi's 'Falstaff' | Juilliard Fabio Luisi Vocal Arts Master Class - Duration: 28:48.

("Alice, Meg, Nannetta" from Falstaff by Verdi)

(singing in foreign language)

(laughing)

(singing in foreign language)

(audience applauding)

- Okay, very good.

I think the last stave was a little bit too fast.

Just, just so much.

But it was fine, because what we need

it's to understand every note,

but not the words, because

you are talking four different texts.

So the important thing is to be

precise, perfectly rhythmically,

but we don't understand the words

because everyone of you is singing something different.

This is the joke in this.

Good, let's start one more time from the top.

("Alice, Meg, Nannetta" from Falstaff by Verdi)

(singing in foreign language)

- That is Nannetta, it is too fast.

Look,

you are doing Nannetta, and I want you to say Nannetta.

- Nannetta. - Nannetta.

Nannetta. - Nanneta.

- Nannetta, with a lot of sympathy.

She's the youngest, okay?

Nannetta, good, one more time.

("Alice, Meg, Nannetta" from Falstaff by Verdi)

(singing in foreign language)

- [Instructor] Good.

(singing in foreign language)

- Okay, stop.

Can you explain what's happening in this scene?

- So both Meg and I have just received letters,

and we're coming to tell the whole group,

"Look at this funny thing that's happened to us."

So we're discussing, "Okay, you read the letter."

"Okay well you read the letter."

- Okay. (audience laughing)

What is in this letter?

- We find out that in the letter,

we have this beautiful letter about

"Let's take you the beautiful bride,

"and me the merry groom and let's make a couple."

And then Quickly has a great line, "Ah, a couple in three,"

because there's now three of us.

- Okay, and they have the same letter, with the--

- Exactly. - With exactly the same words.

So you give to her your letter,

and you give to her your letter.

It's the same letter, okay, good.

And who is writing this letter?

- Falstaff. - Falstaff is right.

- And Falstaff-- - Why is

he writing this letter?

- He wants to seduce us for our money.

- Not only for money.

- And lots of (laughter drowns out speech).

(laughing)

- Okay, good, from the top again.

Nannetta was perfect.

(speaking foreign language)

- Yeah.

- Yeah, yes, okay.

(speaking foreign language) Less, less vowels.

(speaking foreign language) Mm hmm.

("Alice, Meg, Nannetta" from Falstaff by Verdi)

(singing in foreign language)

- Meg, when you start (speaking foreign language),

think the mood in which Falstaff wrote this letter.

So it's not neutral, it's the switching thing

between the music which says what Falstaff is thinking

and you who is reading it, but

(singing in foreign language)

A little bit sweet, okay?

And also before,

when you start reading the letter,

(singing in foreign language)

A little bit more

big theater, hmm, okay.

(vocalizing)

("Alice, Meg, Nannetta" from Falstaff by Verdi)

(singing in foreign language)

- Sorry, sorry to interrupt.

(singing in foreign language) Different, yes.

First you are reading, and then you are again in your words.

Make two different course.

Let's start one more time, please, from

no, a little bit before,

(speaking foreign language)

(singing in foreign language)

Very good.

Can you try to make the phrase with only one dynamic?

Now you are doing (singing in foreign language).

You are developing those long notes.

You can start a little bit louder if you want.

You don't need to, because you have enough voice.

So, beautiful legato, and without opening those vowels,

those long notes, okay?

(singing in foreign language)

Okay, when you say (speaking foreign language),

on the one side, you are making fun of it,

but on the other side, "Ah, that's me!"

"That's me."

Donna bella, that's nice, actually.

It's nice, but then (singing in foreign language).

There you make fun of him, okay?

One more time.

That was much better (sings in foreign language).

Don't start too,

don't start too soft now (singing in foreign language).

And then connect the phrase.

You are doing (singing in foreign language).

Where is this, (speaking foreign language), yes,

(singing in foreign language)

Are you breaking here? - Yes.

- Yes, so.

(speaks faintly)

No, you can breathe, but (singing in foreign language).

Don't interrupt the phrase, yes, okay?

(vocalizing)

(singing in foreign language)

Is that all?

We need more.

We need more, think of the size of Falstaff.

You are singing his size, okay?

Good.

Can we do it one more time?

Last time today, maybe? (laughing)

Okay.

(singing in foreign language)

(laughing)

Okay.

Beautiful.

No, very good, very good.

This is one of the most difficult parts of this scene.

So, as we said yesterday,

on the one side, you are making fun of him,

on the other side,

you have never heard such words from your husband.

That's very new to you,

that a man can talk that way to a woman.

And it is beautiful to read those words.

So you are happy now, okay, somehow,

on the other side, it's Falstaff,

and I'm not alone, they are here,

and so they are watching me.

So you have to switch between the two of them.

- So like here with-- - Yes.

For example, yeah, very good.

(singing in foreign language) Think about yourself here.

- Mm hmm.

- They are beautiful words.

And then, (singing in foreign language).

Uh huh, hhey are here, so (singing in foreign language).

Make a little bit more of this phrase, so

(singing in foreign language)

Yes. (laughing)

Okay, good.

Can you do it, this is such a beautiful phrase.

And it is so beautiful that at the end of the act,

all of you are singing this.

Because it's especially beautiful and

every one of you would like to have

such a letter from Falstaff.

Okay, good.

That's okay.

No, (vocalizing).

(singing in foreign language)

Take your time.

(singing in foreign language)

(laughing)

Okay, if a conductor starts from nothing,

nothing

goes right.

Okay? (all laughing)

Good.

(singing in foreign language)

(laughing)

Let's do it.

(singing in foreign language)

After that, G sharp, G sharp.

Yes.

(singing in foreign language)

(laughing)

(singing in foreign language)

I think,

take your time before the first (speaking foreign language)

but now, (speaks foreign language)!

Okay?

(speaking foreign language)

(singing in foreign language)

(speaking foreign language)

(singing in foreign language)

Don't run, don't run, you are angry.

Every syllable, each one of all those (vocalizes).

One by one, okay?

(speaking foreign language)

(singing in foreign language)

Not bad.

You can make even more noise with the words.

Especially the two of you.

Okay?

Not louder,

just more,

spit that word out, okay?

One more time, just (vocalizes).

One, two, one.

(singing in foreign language)

Very good, we did not understand one word.

And this is-- (laughing)

And this is what we want, it's exactly this, very good.

10 seconds' rest, and then we do it from the top.

All the scene, okay?

(laughing)

(faintly chatting)

In the opera house we normally, for staging,

on this scene, how long is this, six minutes maybe?

We work two hours.

Because it's one of the most difficult parts

of the opera in Verdi.

Okay?

Good.

("Alice, Meg, Nannetta" from Falstaff by Verdi)

(singing in foreign language)

(laughing)

(singing in foreign language)

(audience applauding)

WTF Do I Watch Featuring Mamrie Hart | The Good Place, Cheers, American Vandal, Paterson - Duration: 2:03.

Then you've come to the right gal.

(bell dings)

(upbeat music)

I am Mamrie Hart here to make sense

of the vast streaming universe.

Here's what we're firing up this week.

NBC's The Good Place enters season two.

This comedy from the creator of Parks and Rec is set

in an afterlife featuring Kristen Bell and Ted Danson

which is coincidentally how I've always pictured heaven.

Ever since that time I was streaming Cheers

and Veronica Mars simultaneously.

Speaking of,

ALEXA: Getting Cheers on Fire TV.

You can now stream all 14 bajillion seasons of Cheers

right now on Prime.

Use it as a classic TV palette cleanser

between the twistedness of Ozark and Vice Principals.

And if you can't get enough true crime series

like Making A Murderer, don't miss Netflix's parody

of the genre, American Vandal.

Everyone thinks I did it.

Everyone.

It's got everything you love about those shows minus,

you know, the real life murdery part.

I'll never understand what's so amusing about penises.

(dog growling)

Finally, Star Wars geeks, indie film buffs,

and Girls fans, the show, not the gender,

can all find common ground

in Jim Jarmusch's film Paterson on Prime.

(intense music)

This is Paterson bus 23.

I have a situation.

Adam Driver stars in this quirky low-key comedy

as a bus driver poet.

The film is actually loosely based on Paterson,

a collection of poems by William Carlos Williams.

Who you may ask?

ALEXA: Williams Carlos Williams was a Puerto Rican

American poet closely associated with-

You know what?

I can probably just do this on my own time.

Join us again next week for more recs.

Until then, I'll just be here streaming shows

and practicing my bus driver poetry.

The wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round.

The wheels on the bus go 'round.

Thank you. (giggles)

Beanz, did you enjoy?

Heartworm Disease and Heartworm Prevention in Dogs - Duration: 2:13.

This is Charlie, a heartworm-positive dog.

There are adult heartworms in Charlie's heart reproducing and releasing baby heartworms

called microfilariae into Charlie's bloodstream.

If a mosquito bites Charlie, taking a blood meal from the infected dog, the mosquito ingests

the microfilariae too.

While in the mosquito's gut, the microfilariae grow and mature into another stage of their

lifecycle, infective heartworm larvae.

If this mosquito then bites your pet, these infective larvae are then deposited on the

skin and enter through the puncture wound.

Your pet has been infected with young heartworms.

A heartworm test can only detect adult heartworms.

It takes six months on average from the mosquito bite for heartworm larvae to become mature

adults, and be detectable on testing.

Because detecting juvenile heartworms is impossible, your veterinarian may recommend repeating

a heartworm test six months from missing a dose of heartworm medication or acquiring

a dog with unknown history.

A typical oral heartworm product kills the heartworm larvae that have infected your dog

in the last 30 days.

Imagine a cleaning service coming in and cleaning your house: Once they leave, they can't prevent

your house from getting messy again.

Heartworm medication is the same: It doesn't create a force field around your pet, protecting

them from being infected.

Your pet may continue to be bitten by mosquitoes and accumulate juvenile heartworms throughout

the month.

Therefore, another dose must be administered every 30 days to clean up again.

If heartworm medication is missed, juvenile larvae grow older and can grow past the age

they're killed by monthly medications.

We've missed our window of opportunity.

This can happen with a single missed dose, and result eventually in a mature heartworm

infection.

The key to preventing heartworm disease in your pet is consistent administration of your

pet's heartworm product as directed, and regular testing.

Ensure your pets are safe by talking to your veterinarian about a trusted heartworm product.

What Actors Really Use When Taking Drugs In Movies - Duration: 6:10.

A lot of things are legal in Hollywood, but cocaine and heroin?

Yeah, still not so much.

And when it comes to selling onscreen substance abuse, you can only go so far with a CGI high.

Hollywood's prop masters still have to use ingenious practical effects to make fake drugs

look like the real thing — without hurting the actors who have to put the stuff in their

lungs, up their noses, or… uh, elsewhere.

Here's what was really on the set in these movies where drugs were on the menu.

Horrible Bosses

Colin Farrell is no stranger to doing fake cocaine in front of the camera, or real cocaine

in real life, for that matter, back when he was one of Hollywood's biggest party boys.

But for Horrible Bosses, prop master Mychael Bates had the actor snorting powdered lactose

— a milk product that's so harmless, actors can inhale it without hurting themselves.

That's good news for Farrell, who was reportedly so keen on staying in character that he would

snort the fake cocaine between takes.

Pineapple Express

Despite Seth Rogen's outspoken advocacy for marijuana offscreen, the cast in the stoner

flick Pineapple Express wasn't actually smoking the real thing — which just goes to show

what a talented actor Bill Hader really is.

"Is this normal?"

Prop master Jeff Butcher purchased the movie's fake weed in bulk from International Oddities,

a company that specializes in bud without any THC, the substance that gets you high

— so that actors can smoke it, a lot, without suffering any weird after-effects.

Trainspotting

You won't be surprised to learn that Ewan McGregor and his castmates weren't shooting

real heroin in Trainspotting— in fact, no human arms were punctured in the making of

this film.

Instead, the film's prop master Gordon Fitzgerald used a real syringe filled with dyed water,

which was injected into a prosthetic arm.

According to Fitzgerald, this method had a perk: "You can draw the plunger up and down

and it looks as if the blood is mixing with the liquid."

21 Jump Street

A fictional synthetic drug is central to the plot of 21 Jump Street, which stars Channing

Tatum and Jonah Hill as cops who go undercover to stop the threat.

"Goes by the street name HFS —

"Holy F------ S---."

But while HFS is a fabrication, Tatum and Hill still needed something to put in their

mouths when it came time to film this scene where they get high to avoid blowing their

cover.

The solution?

Communion-style dissolving wafers with a hint of yellow food covering, which melt on the

tongue the same way as drugs like acid.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Needless to say, cocaine was featured heavily in The Wolf of Wall Street, which is set in

the late 1980s.

So when it came time to do lines, actors were given vitamin D powder, which is harmless

to the body when ingested in small doses.

There's just one catch: these were not small doses.

"I never had more vitamin D in my entire life.

I could have lifted a car over my f------ head"

American Gangster

Powdered heroin was central to the plot of the 2007 film American Gangster, based on

the life of career criminal Frank Lucas played, who built his empire on a fortune made by

smuggling heroin into the U.S. on military planes returning from the Vietnam war.

It's also one of the most difficult drugs to fake onscreen — which is why American

Gangster's prop master used a substance called Mannitol.

Doctors use it to treat kidney conditions and reduce brain swelling — but it's also

used by real-life drug dealers to cut heroin, making it a convincing choice.

Scarface

Not all fake cocaine is created equal— especially when the fake cocaine is actually baby laxative.

That's right: in Scarface, prop masters used powdered baby laxative to stand in for the

massive amount of cocaine that's bought, sold, and ingested by drug lord Tony Montana, played

by Al Pacino.

And while the substance didn't get anyone high, it did have certain other effects on

the human body — "So much so that no one would want to put it up their nose," according

to actor Stephen Bauer, who played Manny Rivera.

What happens when you snort too much powdered baby laxative?

Nobody's saying, but it can't be good.

"What the f*** was that?"

The Breakfast Club

Before people figured out how to make THC-free weed, oregano was the preferred stand-in for

marijuana in movies like The Breakfast Club — so that's what they're smoking in this

scene from John Hughes' classic film about a crew of misfits sentenced to high school

detention on a Saturday.

There's just one problem: back in the day, people still had some pretty weird ideas about

the physical effects of smoking up.

"Marijuana!

The burning weed with its roots in HELL!"

Thanks to the movie's prop master, the joint they're passing around looks legit — but

nothing else about this scene is especially realistic.

Half Nelson

Ryan Gosling's Oscar-nominated performance as a drug-addicted teacher in New York City

would have been wasted if Half Nelson's on-screen crack looked wack.

But prop master Jeremy Balon found an ingenious solution: an off-white coffee mug that he

"broke up into about a million little pieces, then dyed in coffee."

A piece of broken, stained porcelain would be set in front of a small ball of tobacco

that smoked when lit, lending a realistic look to Gosling's fake crack pipe.

American Beauty

For all this talk of oregano and baby laxative, it's worth noting that Hollywood still does

occasionally do its drugs the old-fashioned way — like in this scene from American Beauty,

where Kevin Spacey's Lester Burnham gets stoned in a parking lot at a real estate convention.

American Beauty director Sam Mendes said, "There may or may not have been real pot available

on that particular movie, I couldn't possibly comment" — but Kevin Spacey's giggling fit

kind of says it all.

"Honey, this is…"
