How to Use MDMA Safely - Duration: 17:16.

Like with any popular recreational drug, there's no reason MDMA should be killing people.

Nearly every death comes from improper dosing, a bad environment, bad combinations, or other

factors.

Once you're just looking at MDMA's safety, it's not a very concerning substance.

Because of prohibition and a lack of education, however, it's pretty easy for people to make

mistakes.

So in this video I want to run through a few key safety tips that'll prevent toxicity and

death in most cases.

And throughout the video, please keep this general principle in mind.

If you take a common dose sitting around someone's house in a temperate environment, there's

almost no chance of harm.

Therefore, when toxicity is seen, MDMA itself isn't really to blame.

Before we can even talk about safe usage, you need to have MDMA.

This is a prohibited market, so tons of people are using ecstasy or Molly, but they're not

taking MDMA.

Instead, they're often being exposed to substituted cathinones or other stimulants.

Those may work on the same neurotransmitters, but they have different safety and effect

profiles.

You might not die because of accidentally taking a random cathinone, but it's still

a lot riskier than knowing what you're using.

Even worse, there are some drugs occasionally sold as MDMA that can easily be lethal, like

PMA and PMMA.

Just a couple doses could kill you and even at sub-lethal doses, neither substance is

pleasant.

So please, if you're trying to use MDMA, use a reagent test kit.

If you can afford MDMA, there's no reason not to also have reagent liquids on hand.

You can easily order them from companies like DanceSafe and Reagent Tests UK.

All you have to do is apply a drop of a testing liquid to your drug sample and observe the

color change.

You'll either add the liquid directly to a powder or crystal sample, or you'll scrape

off some powder from a tablet.

The most common test for MDMA is the Marquis reagent.

In this case you'll usually see a flash of purple that quickly become black.

If that's what you get, there's a fairly good chance you have MDMA.

There are other drugs, like MDA and 6-APB, that could give a similar result.

And although this is rare, a positive test could mask the presence of another non-MDMA

drug.

But, overall, this is a fairly good way to make your usage safer.

If you want to be even safer, there are other options.

The best is to send a sample to EcstasyData, Energy Control, or another drug checking organization.

Doing so typically costs money and it'll take some time to receive the results.

But when you get those results, they'll be drastically more reliable than a reagent test.

These services use an advanced analytical technique called GC-MS.

Unlike with reagent liquids, GC-MS can tell you the chemical components of a sample.

Depending on your location, you may also have access to another spectroscopy tool.

Organizations like The Loop, which functions in the UK, bring analytical tools to events

in order to test drug samples.

So if you're attending an event where those tools are available, I recommend utilizing

them.

And for everyone else, reagents are basically the way to go.

Once you're pretty confident you have MDMA, using the right dose is vital.

There's no reason for almost anyone to take more than 200 mg over the course of a night.

That includes your initial dose and redoses.

If you're using more, you're probably using too much.

Unfortunately, there are some drug using cultures in certain locations that think 2, 3, or 400

mg is a reasonable dose.

This is absolutely false.

You don't need nearly that much to receive MDMA's pleasurable effects and using that

amount raises the chance of harm and the chance of a harsher comedown.

Tablets somewhat complicate this issue, because there's no good way to know how much they

contain.

While they've historically had 75 to 150 mg, they'll sometimes contain 200 and even 300

mg.

High-dose tablets have become a bigger issue in recent years.

Because you're not going to know your dose when taking these products, you need to treat

your tablet as though it may be particularly strong.

As such, start your evening with half and, based on how you feel, decide if you want

the other half 90 to 120 minutes later.

Even though this is sometimes going to result in someone underdosing, it's much better than

overdosing.

And it's definitely better than taking multiple tablets like a lot of people do.

Remember, if you have a high-dose tablet, using just 2 or 3 could expose you to 300

to 500 mg of MDMA or more.

That's when serious health risks become a greater concern and you're also not going

to feel as good when the drug wears off.

You're better off using powder or crystals since you can weigh those with a milligram

scale.

With a scale like the GeminiPro-20, you'll want to weigh out a dose based on a simple

equation.

Take your weight in kilograms and add 50 milligrams.

If you weigh 70 kilograms, your dose will be 120 milligrams.

The safest way to take MDMA is to only take that single dose.

But I get that a lot of people insist on redosing since it can potentially extend the duration.

If you are absolutely insistent on redosing, take half your initial dose around 2 hours

later.

One of the main acute concerns with MDMA is hyperthermia.

Even if you're just sitting around doing very little, your body temperature can increase,

but your heath isn't at-risk.

Whereas if you take a large dose, are dancing for hours, and you're in a really hot environment,

you could surpass 102 or 104 degrees Fahrenheit, or 40 degrees Celsius.

This is why I strongly believe it's not a great idea to use the drug in a hot environment,

like at many clubs or outdoor festivals.

Using MDMA in the middle of the summer in Las Vegas is a pretty good way to exacerbate

whatever harm potential there is.

Yet I understand it's not reasonable to expect people to avoid those settings.

If you're going to use in a less-than-ideal environment, it's good to take breaks.

Just stepping away from the crowd and relaxing for 10 minutes every hour or so can be somewhat

protective.

And above all else, you should definitely stick to a common dose in these situations.

It's also good to make sure you're drinking enough, though this comes with a caveat.

The next acute harm to watch out for is hyponatremia.

Hyponatermia involves a significant dilution of your blood's sodium level.

This happens for a few reasons.

One, people drink a ton of water thinking it'll reduce hyperthermia or otherwise make

MDMA safer.

This is a really bad idea.

Second, the drug's inherent endocrine effects, specifically on the hormone Vasopressin, can

raise the chance of hyponatremia.

And third, people are drinking a lot of water in the absence of sodium intake.

Hyponatremia can present with symptoms like headache, nausea, muscle cramps, and mental

status changes.

If you push it too far, you could encounter cerebral edema, seizures, and brain herniation.

In other words, it's really something you want to avoid.

Sodium dilution can occur even with a typical dose and a fair bit of water, but it usually

won't be dangerous unless you're excessively drinking water.

Therefore, stick to a max of 500 mL per hour of activity.

Even better than using a hypotonic fluid, like water, is using isotonic fluids, like

sports drinks.

These contain some sodium and alternatively, you can take a sodium supplement alongside

regular water, aiming for 200 to 300 mg per 500 mL.

It's worth noting females may be at a greater risk for hormonal reasons, making these tips

even more important.

MDMA reliably increases your heart rate and blood pressure, but like with the temperature

increases, it's not a big deal if you're using it safely.

Once you add intense physical exertion, other stimulants, or high doses to the mix, that's

when cardiovascualr concerns appear.

Because of its stimulant properties, it does raise the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke,

and other issues.

You can nearly eliminate your risk by taking a common dose, avoiding other stimulants,

and not being active for too long.

And of course, if you have a preexisting cardiovascular issue, avoid MDMA.

People often combine other drugs with MDMA.

Sometimes that's fine, but other times it's pretty risky.

There are some combinations that should simply be avoided, including MAOIs, 5-HTP, tramadol,

and other stimulants, including caffeine.

That list isn't exhaustive, but it covers some of the main combinations you should stay

away from.

Those combinations can raise the risk of acute harm and in some cases also raise the risk

of neuronal dysfunction or neurotoxicity, which I'll talk more about soon.

SSRIs are often said to be a bad combination, but this isn't really the case.

They actually function in a way that can pharmacologically oppose MDMA's activity, so they don't exacerbate

each other's harms.

But because they can block MDMA's activity, it's also pretty pointless to combine them.

All in all, if you pay attention to these areas, it's highly unlikely MDMA will be physically

dangerous.

There are just a couple other points I want to touch on before ending the video, those

are frequency of use and neurotoxicity.

Both receive a lot of attention and in the case of neurotoxicity, it's one of the most

popular topics in the media and scientific literature.

By far, the most people frequency recommendation is to wait 3 months between uses.

This is even referred to as the "3-month rule," so you'd almost think there's some science

behind it.

Sadly, there isn't.

Waiting 3 months is as arbitrary as most other frequency recommendations.

To be honest, there's no frequency that's been proven safe in the long-term, so anything

I say is basically a best guess.

(text)

If you're taking MDMA in an ideal way (low dose, good environment) I don't see a reason

why 1 month is especially concerning.

This is based on some anecdotal reports and on MAPS's protocol.

MAPS is studying MDMA in a formal, scientific way to see if it's a good treatment for PTSD

and other conditions.

Their approved protocol involves administering the drug a few times with only 3 to 5 weeks

between sessions.

Of course, that's with a common dose of pure MDMA and it's in a very relaxed setting.

But it demonstrates the core point that the safety of the drug itself is quite different

from the safety of how some people choose to use it.

If you're deciding to use it in a riskier way, perhaps 2 to 3 months makes sense.

It's not based on any real science, but I think the principle of "less is better and

even less is even better" does apply.

The whole point of waiting an extended period between uses is to recover your preexisting

serotonin levels and to avoid an increased risk of neuronal dysfunction.

It doesn't take months for your serotonin to return and we have little reason to think

you're at a higher risk of dysfunction after you've been sober for a month.

So I can't identify a good reason to say 3-months is drastically better than 1-month if you're

using it in a relatively safe way.

This leads directly to the issue of neurotoxicity .

You should watch my neurotoxicity video and read the TDC page since those will go into

far more detail.

Briefly, it appears MDMA does have the potential to cause neuronal dysfunction or toxicity.

This is more likely if you use too often, at high doses, or in really bad environments.

This kind of dysfunction may present with lasting declines in serotonin, cognitive impairment,

and mood disruption.

At the most extreme end, it could hypothetically damage serotonergic neurons for months or

years.

Evidence that reasonable use in humans leads to functional problems is lacking, but the

drug definitely isn't 100% safe.

Exactly how the toxicity or dysfunction occurs isn't clear.

A key part seems to be oxidative stress arising from certain metabolites, including N-methyl-alphamethyldopmaine

and alpha-methyldopamine.

The N-acetylcysteine and glutathione conjugates of those chemicals have neurotoxic or neurotoxic-like

potential.

Raising the ambient temperature can exacerbate the damage, while lowering the temperature

seems to be protective.

This could mean your environment's temperature and your temperature can partly determine

how safe MDMA is.

Hyperthermia might be an issue due to it increasing harm from oxidative stress.

Other potential routes of toxicity include dopamine uptake into serotonergic axon terminals,

tyrosine uptake into terminals, and cellular energy disruption.

Dopamine has long been blamed because its metabolism can also increase oxidative stress.

But it's not entirely clear how big a role dopamine plays.

Regardless of the mechanism, the fact that MDMA could cause lasting disruptions in neuronal

activity is important.

Some people have speculated the most common outcome of this is the phenomenon of "losing

the magic."

This is when someone takes MDMA, often at high doses or too frequently, and eventually

loses much of the drug's activity.

Even more concerning are the potential cognitive and mood outcomes.

They haven't been sufficiently demonstrated in the scientific literature, but that doesn't

mean their impossible.

Because of this issue, using common doses relatively infrequently is quite important.

You might be able to further reduce your risk by adminstering certain substances alongside

MDMA.

Based on animal studies, those protective substances include Alpha-lipoic acid, ALCAR,

Vitamin C, Vitamin E, N-acetylcysteine, sildenafil, cannabinoids, memantine, MK-801, and ginger.

I think if you're interested in some combination of those, it's fair to take Vitamin C, alpha-lipoic

acid, and n-acetylcysteine.

It's not even guaranteed that you need to take substances to avoid harm, but if you

have the money to spend, it's not a bad idea.

There are two other factors that also seem to modulate MDMA's toxic potential.

One in exercise, which seems to be protective.

In general, I'm inclined to believe having good sleep habits, a good diet, and an overall

healthy body will reduce your chance of harm.

And the second is stress.

Chronic stress can be associated with higher glucocorticoid levels and that appears to

make MDMA more dangerous in rats.

In the rat study, the implicated hormone was corticosterone.

For us, this would be cortisol.

The study demonstrated you could raise corticosterone levels by exposing rats to stressful situations.

This would then raise MDMA's harm potential.

Further, when the researchers block glucocorticoid synthesis with a drug called metyrapone (me-teer-a-pon),

stressful situations no longer raised the risk.

This suggests higher stress hormone levels directly mediate an increase in toxicity or

neuronal dysfunction.

There are already countless reasons to lower your stress levels, but this may be another.

COMO AUMENTAR A CARGA DOS TREINOS | CARDIOVASCULARES E HIPERTROFIA - Duration: 2:03.

Hi everyone, I'm David Paulo and this is the factory shape

welcome to another video in this video I'm going to talk about how to increase

progressively increase the load and intensity of the training, starting from

which have dramatically increased the intensity and load of the training can

our health what is meant by many injuries are caused by a

drastic increase in intensity or exercise that we are not

prepared to do and this will cause an injury that we will let dry

a lot of time stopped without practicing physical exercise not to happen

several studies indicate that we should not increase more than 10 percent

of intensity in cardiovascular training per week this value

in my opinion is the right one for those who will start workouts

However, people who have been doing it for

too low value in that they have to be adapted according to the performance

person has at that time while the load used in exercises with

weights the goal is the first series

perform 12 repetitions without difficulty stopping and increasing 10% for the second

series from the second to the third series if we manage to bring again the 12

repetitions without difficulty increased, however, if in the third series or in the 4th

we could not perform 12 repetitions

the goal is not to increase the weight and perform with weight we already have the previous series

I hope you enjoyed this video, it was a short video but

I think it contains important tips for the prevention of some injuries and

for people to know what the goal of increasing loads is and how

should do

Firemen Protect Catalonian People from Brutal Spanish Police - Catalonia Referendum - Duration: 10:28.

Hi, I'm Heathcliff and

this is Lions Ground.

I hope you have a fantastic day.

Heavy police violence against the Catalans and even firefighters are victims,

to block voting of Catalonia's independence referendum.

There are 761 wounded.

That is illegal according to the central government of Spain.

The Spanish government has responded with police violence

to try to stop the poll.

And that's not illegal?

You see the police abusing firefighters with bats

who wanted to protect the Catalan people from the unnecessary police brutality.

Weird to see.

How one hero mistreated the other hero.

Even the local police fight uhh

the police

To

understand what is going on, we have to go back to the Middle Ages.

1137, the marriage of Queen Petronilla of Aragon

to Count Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona the Crown of Aragon

They acquired Valencia, Catalonia, Corsica, and Sicily.

Catalonia was an important maritime force.

Under the rule of the Counts of Barcelona and the Kingdom of Aragon.

The conflict was born in 1469 when the king of Aragon Ferdinand II

married Isabella I, the Queen of Castile.

The union of the two crowns is how Spain originated.

In fact, Catalonia existed earlier than Spain.

Until today, the Catalans do not feel Spanish.

They have their own identity.

They have a self-government and feel they have the capacity to self-govern

their country Catalunya would have paid more taxes to the

government in Madrid than Spain invested back.

Catalunya speaks its own language and has its own culture.

What the Catalans demands is a matter of modern democracy.

It is irrelevant if the Spanish government likes it or not.

If they want to do a poll, let them do that.

The Spanish government is clearly in violation of human rights.

That became clear on October 1.

The Spanish government have to listen to the people.

That is a democracy.

Catalunya wants to leave Spain, so let them leave

When they leave means that Catalunya is not an EU member

This would endanger the trade relationship with Spain

and other countries, but the relationship is already bad because

of the conflict If Catalunya leaves it will be a disaster

for the Spanish economy In short, money and power over human rights.

Democracy is an illusion.

No surprise.

If you know the meaning of democracy then you understand why.

Democracy, Ochlocracy, means mob rule...

The Rules of the Mob For America, this is a good subject.

I refer to CalExit.

A comparison is made with Brexit Leaving an union is not the same as leaving

a country.

Which laws have been broken by Spain!

The advantage of Catalunya is that Catalunya is still part of

the EU.

The European Commission protects human rights

So also the Catalans.

The Spanish government has violated the European Convention on Human Rights tremendously:

Art.

10, Freedom of expression "Everyone has the right to freedom of expression," a poll falls

under expression, the freedom of exercising an opinion on paper.

Art.

11, Freedom of assembly and association "Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly

and to freedom of association with others...No restrictions shall be placed on the exercise

of these rights" which happened with police brutality.

Art.14 Prohibition of discrimination "The enjoyment of the rights and freedoms set forth

in this Convention shall be secured without discrimination on any ground such as "political"

views.

Art.

16 Restrictions on political activity "Nothing in Articles 10, 11 and 14 shall be regarded

as preventing the High Contracting Parties from imposing restrictions on the political

activity of aliens."

Art.

17 Prohibition of abuse of rights "Nothing in this Convention may be interpreted as implying

for any State, group or person any right to engage in any activity or perform any act

aimed at the destruction of any of the rights and freedoms set forth herein or at their

limitation to a greater extent than is provided for in the Convention."

ART. 18 Limitation on use of restrictions on rights "The restrictions permitted under

this Convention to the said rights and freedoms shall not be applied for any purpose other

than those for which they have been prescribed."

People are tweeting Article 7 of the European Union Treaty "Suspension of any Member State

that uses military force on its own population."

and tabloits and some websites adopts it.

But Art.

A Passing - Jack Marshall Can't Do This - Episode 1 - Duration: 2:53.

Jack Marshall.

Kilimanjaro Expedition. Day Two.

I wanted to start this video diary yesterday,

but I was throwing up every 15 minutes,

so that didn't happen.

This was all Donni's idea.

Oh! Donni is my cousin and best friend.

She's always wanted to climb Kilimanjaro,

and I've always wanted to freeze to death,

so this is perfect!

Today's a rest day, fortunately,

so that we can get acclimated to the altitude and triple-check supplies,

so, I hope she's doing that.

This is the first time for both of us.

Everybody else has been up and back twice --

(O.S.) Jack!

That's Donni.

(O.S.) Jack!

You're up early.

Oh.

(O.S.) Just got word from Los Angeles.

Donni, you're, it's so bright.

You're letting all of the outside in --

-- (O.S.) Jack, it's your aunt Josette.

What?

(O.S.) She...passed.

(O.S.) I'm so sorry, Jack.

Wait, what happened?

(O.S.) Didn't say.

(O.S.) They've been trying to reach us for a few days now...

(O.S.) And there's something else.

(O.S.) Arthur Pickering is handling the estate.

What?

(O.S.) I know how you feel about him.

How do you know that?

(O.S.) He needs you back in LA. Something to do with the will.

When?

(O.S.) I don't know.

I got, I gotta pack.

I gotta, I gotta get back. I can't --

(O.S.) It's okay. Hey. Just hold on.

(O.S.) Just breathe, okay?

Yeah, no,

You're right.

Oh, Donni. The climb.

I am so sorry.

(O.S) Oh, no, don't worry about that. You need to be there.

I just, I can't let Arthur get his, his dirty little fingers all over my aunt's estate.

(O.S.) Well, it sounds like it's too late for that.

(O.S.) Do you want me to come with you?

No. No, no, no, it's fine. You just, you can stay here.

(O.S.) Okay, I'll go talk to the Sherpa.

Okay.

(O.S.) I'm so sorry, Jack.

Top 10 Tools To Add To Your Toolbox | Mountain Bike Maintenance - Duration: 8:04.

- Every mountain biker should have

a set of tools to do some basic maintenance

on their bike to make sure it stays on the trails.

So, even at the basic level,

what you need to be able to do at home is

run an Allen key over the bike and just

give it a general once-over for safety,

be able to change the inner and outer gear cables

just to keep your bike working in bad conditions,

and changing a puncture and replacing the tyres.

And to do those jobs, all you really need

is a pump, some tyre levers, a decent little multitool,

preferably with a chain tool on it,

or a separate chain tool, and a set of cable cutters.

However, if you do like tinkering, and you wanna

get a bit more involved,

here are 10 tools that really will make your life easier.

First up, cone spanners.

If you're going to be doing any sort of hub service

on your bike, it's fairly likely that unless

your bike is spanking new, you're going to need

some cone spanners to remove the hub axle system

off the bike.

Even if your bike doesn't have regular cup-and-cone

bearings, you're gonna still need these to remove

the end caps on the axle, to get access to the

cartridge bearings.

Cone spanners are available in a variety of sizes,

so it's a good idea to keep a few of them

in your selection.

They don't cost an awful lot of money,

but they will always come in handy

when you least think you're gonna need them.

The thing that's so unique about a cone spanner

is the actual physical size.

They're only about 3mm thick,

so in the old days you used to be able to sort

of use them against each other for locknuts,

but today, it's more about just doing wheel axles with them.

So make sure you keep some of those in your toolkit.

Next up is the chain checker.

So your transmissions obviously wears out a lot

when you're using your bike, especially if you ride

in muddy and wet conditions.

Now, if your replace your chain on a more regular basis

than the cassette, you'd often get two or three chains

to one cassette.

So obviously, that's going to save you a lot of money.

But you need to monitor the wear on you chain.

So using a chain checker,

you put the two pins into the chain,

and looking at the scale at the top,

you can see how worn it is.

So with a 10-speed chain, anything up to .75

is what you're looking for,

and then you wanna replace it.

With 11 and 12, it's more like .5

So a simple device, you can get these ones

that have got an adjustable sort of pivoting pin on the end,

and you get more simple ones, but they're a really good

bit of kit.

Keep one of those in your toolkit.

Next up, chain pliers.

So they might seem like more of a specialist tool,

but actually, they're very useful for simply removing

the master link on a chain.

Simply insert them, pull the two links together,

split the chain.

Why is that useful?

Well, for maintaining the chain itself,

de-greasing it, cleaning it, and also if you're

just regularly changing a chain if you're

doing a lot of miles.

Of course when you're re-joining a chain,

make sure you're doing it properly with the correct

joining pin, or master link.

Next up, a Torx multi-tool.

So traditionally on mountain bikes,

the T25 would commonly be used to hold in your disc

to the wheels.

But, as we've seen on more increasing places on the bike

like the rear mech, or even the pivot bolt for holding

the brake lever onto your brakes,

you're seeing more and more Torx solutions coming in.

And why is that important?

Well, for the smaller bolts especially,

we're talking 3mm or under that.

They're very easy to round out.

But with a Torx key, you get a much better purchase.

Obviously these things are small,

so having a multitool with all the sizes on there,

that's a no-brainer.

Next up, a cassette tool, and a chain whip.

Why do you need these?

Simply for removing the cassette off the bike.

So assuming you're going to use those cone spanners

and the chain-related stuff,

you're gonna need these to remove the rest

of your transmission as well.

So the actual cassette tool slides into the cassette,

and you hold the cassette still with the chain whip,

and use either an adjustable spanner,

or you can place this in a vice and turn the wheel

against it to remove the cassette.

Very useful tool, buy once, never need to buy it again.

Will always be there.

Just make sure you take into account the speed

transmission you have.

These are available with up to 12-speed,

or with a lot wider chain for a lower selection of gears.

Next up, a bottom bracket removal tool.

So removing a bottom bracket is important,

because that's one of the first things that you're

likely to knacker out on your bike.

Because it suffers the rotation the whole time,

or just directly in the line of fire

from the front wheel, and removing it

and replacing it is an easy job you can do at home

with minimal tools.

So this particular one has a full-enclosed style

device, not the crescent-style one,

so it's got really good grip on there,

and it's actually also got a little wheel on here.

So this wheel is for use with the Shimano cranks,

we've got the little cap to pre-load on there.

So you can just pre-load that,

wick it up with a key, and you're good to go.

So make sure you get the one that suits your bike

and the style of bottom bracket that's in there.

Never need another one.

Next up, a smaller tool.

A valve core remover.

These are really useful for obviously replacing

the valve core, but also in a situation

where you're setting up your bike tubeless,

it's really good to actually take the valve out

and inject the tube of solution in there as well.

It's a really simple little tool,

valve cores do bend from time to time,

perhaps you're out on the trail and you're in a hurry

with a mini-pump, trying to fettle some air back in there,

so worth carrying with your on a trail as well,

in addition with a couple of valves.

Keep that in your toolkit at home with all your

tubeless stuff.

Next up, a compressor pump.

Gone are the days of struggling trying to setup

tubeless tyres with a regular pump,

or having to waste CO2 cartridges,

get yourself one of these.

This one's made by Topeak, but there are

various different options out there on the market.

Principally, they're all the same.

So you have a track pump built into the unit,

and you have a secondary chamber which you charge up

just by turning a knob or twisting a dial,

charge that up,

and you can release all that pressure into one hit,

which seeks your tyre and inflates it in one hit.

Once you've tried one of these,

you will never go back.

They are so good.

Next up is one of my favourites,

it's the internal cable routing kit.

Now if you've ever struggled fitting any kind of

internal cable, whether it's just your seat post's

sort of dropper cable, or a fully gear-length housing,

then you'll know that it's one of the most

frustrating jobs to do if it goes wrong.

In which case, get one of these.

It'll make your life a lot easier.

Essentially, it's three cables, inner cables that is,

with different fittings on the end to attach

the different style cables.

Some are screw-barbed ones,

some are magnetic, and some have got a sheath style to them.

And you simply chase them through with this incredibly

powerful magnet, join them up to the cable you're pulling,

pull it straight back through.

Absolutely brilliant bit of kit.

Okay, so it's not the cheapest thing in the world,

but buy it once, and you've got it in your toolkit forever.

Last but not least is some kind of torq wrench.

Now, you don't necessarily need to have a full-size torq

wrench and bit setup.

You can get away with one of these.

Now this is absolutely brilliant, it's by Park,

comes with a number of bits, and they store

within the handle, and it's got Torq settings built into it.

So this is what you need to do your major controls.

So your bar, your stem, your stem clamp,

your brake lever control setup.

Any of those delicate ones.

Means you don't need a full setup with the Torq wrench,

and it means your can make sure you're not gonna

break anything on your bike.

Really useful to have,

especially if you've got some lightweight or expensive

components on there.

Hopefully some of those tools are gonna be

really useful to you, and I'd love to know

what tools you can't live without.

Prayers Aren't Enough After Deadly Mass Shooting, We Have To Act On Gun Control - Duration: 3:39.

Last night in Las Vegas, more than 50 people were killed, more than 400 people have been

taken to the hospital as a result of a mass shooting that took place at a country music

festival.

The shooter, a 64-year-old white male, was firing down into the crowd from a hotel window

at the Mandalay Bay Casino.

The police found 10 rifles in his hotel room.

He shot himself before they could actually enter the room.

More than 50 people dead, making this the deadliest mass shooting in US history, which

actually happens to be the second time in two years that we've had the deadliest mass

shooting in American history.

Before that, it was the nightclub in Orlando.

Here's the thing.

If you looked at Twitter this morning, you saw Donald Trump, you saw the rest of the

Trump family, you saw Republican politicians, you saw athletes, you saw Democratic politicians,

Barack Obama, everybody on Twitter saying our thoughts and prayers are with you.

We're praying for you.

We're hoping you're okay.

We're praying for those who don't know if they're loved one's okay.

Can we stop with this?

Can we stop with the thoughts and the prayers?

Did it work after Columbine?

Did it work after Newtown?

Did it work after the congressional baseball game?

Did it work after the Pulse nightclub?

This is ridiculous, folks.

Enough with the goddamn thoughts and prayers.

It's time to act on gun control.

The guns that the shooter in this specific instance had were not illegal.

He purchased them, because he's allowed to.

Now, I'm not saying we need to go round up and make sure nobody in this country can buy

a gun, although I, personally, wouldn't be opposed to that.

I'm saying we've got to do something about high powered assault rifles and get them out

of the hands of people in the United States.

Those guns were designed for one purpose, to kill as many human beings as possible in

as short of amount of time as possible.

That's what's wrong with this situation.

No human being civilian in this country should ever have their hands on that, because it's

a human killing machine.

That's what it's for.

The NRA has been deathly silent since this attack took place.

They're the ones who push for lax gun control in the United States.

They're the one who lobbied congress to make sure we don't pass any new gun laws.

They're the ones who their only purpose is to make sure that gun sales in the United

States continue to climb.

In fact, Monday morning, following the shooting, gun stocks, once again, through the roof.

They love a good mass shooting, because they know we, as a country, don't take the issue

seriously.

I've seen people on Twitter saying, "You know, we react to this the same way we react to

a natural disaster," as if it's some kind of act of God that we have no control over.

We absolutely can control these situations, but it's going to take serious people in Washington

DC to do it.

They're the only ones who have the power to do something about this, yet all of them are

silent, which means that all of them

are complicit.

Slander x Kayzo - Without You (Lyrics / Lyric Video) feat. Dylan Matthew - Duration: 3:41.

No I don't wanna live in a world without you

No No

No I don't wanna live in a world without you

No I don't wanna live in a world without you

Cause I don't wanna live in a world without you

Than I would keep you with me

And I could see you again

If time stood still

And all the lies that you portrayed

Like what I'd do if you had stayed

thinking back on all these memories

Now I'm in the corner

The one that always stays the same

The one that I would never change

that I would never blame

Silly me for thinking you're the one

No I don't wanna live in a world without you

No No

No I don't wanna live in a world without you

No I don't wanna live in a world without you

But I don't wanna live in a world without you

So I guess I'll be on my way

It's hard to see

And it's hard to see

Cause I saw the texts on your phone

So you should really just quit

I'm done with all the fake love

Stop with all the bullshit

I guess I wouldn't be here oh no

But if it didn't happen then I guess I wouldn't be here

and I gotta act like I don't care

But these words cut deeper than a knife

I'm comfortable in the skin I wear

Sometimes I try to make it look like

Sometimes I try to put myself out there

Interview: How To Achieve Your Dreams With English | Advanced Conversation - Duration: 29:57.

hey Rene what's up? hey Stefanie I'm good how are you doing? great thanks

awesome well I'm really excited to be doing this interview with you because I

know that your journey of improving your English over the last year has been

incredible you've really improved I've gotten to witness a lot of those

improvements myself because we've been working together for I don't know how

many months has it been like nine months or something like that yeah I guess it

should be like nine months or something it's like a big journey but you know I

have been improving my English in a really awesome way I'm absolutely another person

you're another person that's how you describe it that's awesome so why don't we start there

because in this interview basically what I want to do is I just want to talk to

you about your journey of improving your English like what worked what didn't

work and then how your English has helped you advance in your career and

then of course you know you just went on a trip to the U.S. to a really important

conference so I'd love to talk about that later on in the video so first just

to start us off tell us a little bit about how you learned English and how

you started improving even more over this last year okay so basically you

know as every people I have been learning English or I mean trying to

learn English since I was at a school then in the high school and also in the

university and also I took a course in another Institute here in Ecuador but it

was kind of weird because I was studying I used to be the like the best student

or something like that but I was unable to establish a conversation with

somebody really in English you know then I guess it was all related with my lack of

confidence because my English was not really bad but it's different when you

are just solving a test or something or conjugating verbs and just writing

something it's not the same as real interaction you know absolutely not

because I mean when you're in a test you have like a hole context about where the

test is I mean you have certain topics that you're gonna try in that test but

when you are just talking I mean the other person is just trying to establish

a communication trying to communicate their ideas and you have no

idea what is the next sentence or something so you need to learn how to

listen and how to you know answer questions and establish a good

communication yeah so would you say that a year ago maybe you weren't capable of

having a conversation like we are having right now?

absolutely absolutely I remember that when I started to work in the company

that I am currently working it was kind of weird for me because I had a really

lack of confidence and when I had to talk with somebody else in the United

States it was like a big mess for me I used to be really scared you know

because I was like oh my gosh I would do something wrong here so we actually

before we continue I totally forgot to ask you this but why don't you tell

everyone a little bit about what you do because you mentioned you live in

Ecuador so you're a native Spanish speaker but what is it that you do okay

so as you know I am living here in Ecuator that's a country in South America

so I am native a Spanish speaker and I am currently working for a big company

in States actually our client is from the States but the company is from

London it's headquarters is in London, that's cool, haha, it's in London but the technical lead is in California and the guy that is in charge

of the businesses is located also in Silicon Valley and you're a software

developer yeah I am a software developer we are many several developers here in in

Ecuador actually we have offices here in Quito is the capital of Ecuador and also

in another city that is Loja we are working here from four clients you know

in the States London so when you speak with clients

are you speaking with people in the United States or in London? the most of

the time just in the United States but some co-workers are working with some

people in London so basically a year ago you didn't feel confident speaking with

the clients in the USA but today how do you feel when you speak with them? today

is like just starting a conversation with another people from the same

country you know it's a really big change because when I used to be in

those meetings I used to often ask for the help of somebody else just to listen

and try to understand you know I used to record

the whole conversation so that repeat I remember that yes you know you don't

record the conversations to listen? and.. No, now I am just taking a notebook and

writing some notes and that's it I guess and the most of the time I am just

establishing a communication and.. I have to say Rene that's phenomenal because when

I remember when we first started working together which I think was like in

January of this year 2017 that was like your biggest concern you were just like

Stefanie I have these meetings with native English speakers and I don't

understand what's going on and so you know we were talking about that and so

now here we are in the end of September and you're like yeah you know I attend

the meetings I understand all I don't have to record them anymore you just

take notes and then you're actually able to input like before you were just

listening and trying to understand now you listen understand and you're

probably able to give feedback and to speak in these meetings is that right?

yeah actually like that you know it's like a big change because when I used to

work here in Ecuator I used to be like the one in the in the meetings and all

the time providing solutions and giving ideas and things like that in your

native language yeah in my native language then when I started to work with

this company was like really weird because I I had some ideas but I was

unable to really express what I was thinking it was awful but now we have

the last meeting a couple of weeks ago and we were talking really fluent way

you know and I was I was giving them some ideas also providing feedback

asking some questions that I had it was really pretty cool so how did you get to

this place in such a short amount of time? because you were probably stuck in

the same place for years you know where you pretty much understood English but

you didn't feel fluent or confident you were stuck there for years and then you

had this breakthrough and now you're like yeah you know I speak with native

English speakers my English isn't perfect but we communicate and I'm a

leader at my company now and so how did that happen for you? yeah okay

it's absolutely different when you're going to an institute or something to

just study English and try to memorize these the grammar rules and

all that stuff and it's absolutely different when you are just talking with

somebody else when you started the Academy and we started to just

communicate talking about other careers or profession you said when I started

the Academy? yeah the Academy, the English Full-Time Academy and we were just talking I

mean if you wanna talk in English this is your advice if you wanna talk in English you just

have to go ahead and talk in English that's the only way that you can improve

that skill there isn't any other way you know and when I used to do some

Liver videos I used to play over and over again and then I figure out what were

my faults and then I started to take notes and then try to correct them you

know it's really hard because you are making a lot of mistakes all the time

but if you are paying attention to them and trying to fix them it works

ya know that was actually something that I was really impressed by with you and I

think it was our first or second call again months and months ago but

basically you said Stefanie I did my presentation video I had to do it so

many times because I wasn't satisfied with it but by doing it so many times

you know I caught so many mistakes and I learned and I was like isn't that

amazing Rene you know because this is I think what's lacking from a lot of

educational systems is the whole experimentation from the students where

you guys actually do work and analyze your own work and not necessarily rely

24/7 on a teacher to correct your mistakes because a lot of times students

are like Oh teacher correct me correct me and it's like you will find your own

mistakes if you just really start looking for them so I think that that's

phenomenal and for those who are watching who don't know what the Academy

is the English Full-Time Academy was the first program I ever started online for

English full-time and then we went from an academy to a community and then I

Shut down the community and I'm doing other projects now but I.. don't worry you

guys I'm not going anywhere I'll do more program projects and communities but

basically in that environment it was an online group where there would be like

coaching and training and feedback and the students basically were free to

interact with each other and Rene took full advantage of this

what it was like an experiment really it was a creation and he just I remember

you did one live video and your first live video I think was like two minutes

like I do live videos on Facebook you did one in our group and then your next

video was like three minutes your next video was four minutes your next video

was seven minutes and pretty soon you were just like hey you guys you started

a group like everybody needs to do this this is amazing I feel so confident and

a few days ago you made a video I think that was 17 minutes and I was like oh my

gosh this guy is on fire you know when you're just starting it's kind of really

awful when you don't because you feel you don't have something to say and you

are just thinking oh my gosh I will do a mistake and another and another one but then you are starting to

just speak and communicate things that would've really worked for other people

and then you just start to talk and in an absolutely natural way yeah and I

think that you're such a good example for other people because you really show

people that confidence is a mindset thing like right now we're talking and

you understand me perfectly but you you're making some mistakes your

pronunciation isn't perfect but it's like who cares we're having an awesome

conversation and you're confident you're more confident than other people out

there who have English that's technically better than yours is what I

mean? and so but that's what everyone needs everyone needs this kind of

confidence that you've developed because now you can go out there you can work

for you know an english-speaking company you can network with other English

speakers you can talk with the clients you can be a leader in your industry and

English is no longer holding you back and you'll keep improving it as you go

along but the point is to be able to interact confidently with others and I

think you really truly demonstrate that yeah absolutely

actually I have one friend of mine that is he is studying in a in a .. in

an institute that is really expensive here in Quito actually is one of the

best ones here but I feel he has a really big lack of confidence because his

english is awesome it's perfect he knows a lot of grammar rules he's all

the time with a big book all the time making exercises and things like that but when he has to talk

it it has a big problem that's a .. terrible, i mean his

English is better than mine but I don't know why he can't use it you see why confidence is so important it's

everything because I I know what this is like because as I you know tell

everybody I went through this when I was learning Spanish I was like you I was

the best one in my class and I was like your friend you know my Spanish was

perfect but I did not have confidence and even though maybe I was able to

speak well that lack of confidence held me back from so many opportunities I

wouldn't speak up I wouldn't share my ideas and it was a huge struggle took me

years to overcome it and I didn't have anybody helping me but confidence is

like the one thing that they don't teach you or help you with in English

Institutes it's always teaching teaching teaching

but the real-world practice building the confidence and all that stuff it's

missing its lacking so obviously when I created English full-time that was kind

of like my goal I understood I was like okay we need confidence you know Rene

I've done a lot of traveling and I see so many English speakers around the

world who don't even identify as English speakers they still think they're

English learners and I look at them and I go you're an English speaker we're

speaking English right now you're entertaining me like give yourself some

credit and give yourself some permission to call yourself an English speaker and

yeah again you'll keep improving as you go but at some point you have to cross

over and usually the crossover happens in your mind it's when you decide yeah I

speak English yeah yeah absolutely like you are just missing a lot of

opportunities because you don't wanna use your English it's as you said my

English is not perfect I'm making a lot of mistakes

but I right now I don't really care about those mistakes I am just trying to

communicate my ideas I try to really be like effective in the things that I am doing

exactly and speaking of being effective in the things that you're doing I want

you to tell us now about the conference in the USA because you wrote to me about

that conference and I was so happy for you because you're like Stefanie I was

able to ask questions and so just tell us about this conference I guess that

conference was like the graduation of your program or something for you

we were talking with other non-native speakers in the group and we will grow

in our confidence and things like that and then was like the big test for me

when the boss of my company arrived to the company to Ecuator a couple of

months ago and he had a conversation with me we were talking like one hour or

so and he is from California it was like a big test for me then he said ok you

are ready you can go to the conference and I'm going to buy the tickets for you

wow, wait, stop. That's huge

That's huge because he felt that you were ready with your English your fluency your

confidence he the boss of the company sent you bought the ticket for you so

you could have this amazing experience like this is what I try to tell people

like English will give you so many opportunities but you have to go after

them so okay sorry sorry for interrupting it's just... no you're right

absolutely then after that was like okay I'm

doing awesome here in English and then I had to go to States and then try to see

how my English is but then they're in a country that all the people is speaking

in English so then I went to this conference I was in New York and the

first thing when I arrived to States I mean New York was oh my gosh I'm here

what am I gonna do? it's so I am alone here I was with nobody else in the airport in another

country you're alone oh my gosh what I'm gonna do so I just started to

see how the things are how the people are communicated and you know in New

York the people is speaking a lot of languages people talking in Chinese

and you met Erika there too, right? yes I met Erika also there okay

it was awesome Erika was another person from our Academy group and Erika is awesome so

shout out to Erika and she was she lives in New York and she's just like Rene

you're coming to New York here you know let's hang out and you guys had a blast

right? yeah okay it was the first day and then when I arrived to New

York I remember when I was leaving the airport I didn't have idea what I will

do you know, because I just started to read all the the cards

that were there about the taxis and things like that and then I was just

talking with somebody else from Indonesia or something and then he told me that he

help me with a taxi you know we were talking in English in a really harsh

English because his English was also kind of hard to understand yeah, it was a struggle and then the taxi

arrives, arrived there and it was a big guy from New York and was talking to me

about how and things like that and then we were talking a

little bit I was scared, you know, then I remember that I had

brought some tickets to go and visit the Statue of Liberty and I just ride to

New York and without idea about where I was or something and then I asked for

somebody else to how to get to Battery Park that is a park that is really close

to the Liberty Island mm-hmm and then I was oh my gosh he was giving me

directions about how to get that Park and then I took the metro I got lost

there you know because New York City's Metro is huge but then I was able to get there and visit the Statue of Liberty and I was really

excited I was doing some videos taking a lot of pictures it was amazing because

of it and then at night I had dinner with Erika and we were talking about our

struggles and also about how amazing your community is and things like that

it was awesome you know meeting a person but not just through the webcam or

something but in person, it was absolutely great, you know yeah I think that to me was first of all it was a

dream come true because when I started my academy and community you know what

was it like a year ago over a year ago I was like I want to bring people together

from all around the world help them improve their English and then hopefully

eventually you know people can become friends and meet in real life and that's

literally what happened you guys and you guys surprised me because I had no idea

you were planning on meeting up and then you took a picture and you put it in our

group and I like I was like oh my gosh I started showing it to everybody I

don't remember who I was with my family I'm sure and I was like look you guys look look look so now that that was

phenomenal that you guys got to meet up there you know having met in our

community and then you know gotten to know each other and become friends and

then meet in real life oh my gosh and all of it is just English it's how

English can bring people together so I get really I get really excited

especially when I see like the success of the people that I work with so that's

awesome yeah it was really awesome and you know as I

know that Erika was there I was feeling like okay I have one friend in this

country and that's also yeah even that gives you like peace of mind yeah

absolutely then at the next day I had to assist

that conference and it was great I remember when I write there I was oh my

gosh this is like the big conference for developers and I am here Wow

what was the name of the conference? is QCon

yeah that one is celebrated also in Brazil in London in San Francisco and in

New York mm-hmm so now I was there and I was really Wow I don't know how to

express that I was looking to the people that was arriving they're looking to the

speakers many of them was like the big ones for me and I used to just watch

their videos or read their books or something or their blogs and then I was

there with them you know yeah it was so cool and when I attended the first session it was

awesome because it was okay we are doing many things in the in the good way but

we have to fix many many other things and I was just writing some notes and

then I started to attend to other and another session and then I was in

session that was really technical and I had a lot of questions to that guy and I

was thinking okay I have a lot of question for him

this will be the unique chance that I will have to talk with somebody like

like him you know this question so I had to just go ahead and ask him right but

my English is not perfect but it was like a big mess in my mind you

you're just like I don't know how I'm gonna do this but it's a

once-in-a-lifetime opportunity yeah okay then I just I just said for

myself this will be the unique chance that you will have to talk with this guy

probably so you just have to do it maybe you'll make mistakes

probably no nobody will remember it or you won't it to nobody else you know in your

whole life you will never see them again that's exactly what I tell myself too when I have to do something scary or embarrassing I'm

like they'll never know me or see me ever again yeah absolutely then I just

started to to talk with them asking questions and it was awesome you know

they were able to understand me I don't know with my questions were well formed

or not but they were able to understand me and answer my questions and then

after the meetings also we were just drinking a coffee with them and asking

some questions it was absolutely awesome it was I can't it was phenomenal I'm sure that

that entire experience just did wonders for your overall confidence because you

were already probably feeling pretty confident after having practiced you

know with the people in our group and you had made so many improvements but

then like you said this was the test and you realized it was a once-in-a-lifetime

opportunity so you just decided to go for it and that is like the difference I

think between success and failure in English or in a language because what

happens to a lot of people is they get the opportunity but then they get scared

and so then they don't do it but that's the moment when you have to say it

doesn't matter I'll never see these people again or whatever you have to

tell yourself in your mind to make yourself brave enough to overcome your

fears because once you overcome them that's like when you go over like the

hardest part the mountaintop whatever and on the other side it's just

beautiful because you feel so accomplished and it gives you the

confidence and the courage to go on and to do more right yeah yeah absolutely

you know in that in that confidence then at the lunch time I was just looking to

so many people you know from many play many countries around the world and I

just started to sit together them and just establish conversation and it was

awesome also because I was able to meet people from all

many people from South America but people also from Germany from India from

the States many States from the United States you know Philadelphia California

Florida I don't remember And you just started talking with everyone that's it was awesome no it is it is because like you said a year ago just a

year ago and actually you went to this conference I think like a month or two

ago so literally like six months ago you probably weren't prepared for something

like this but now you went it was amazing you had all these breakthroughs

and I know and you know that that moment was very important for you and for your

entire career because you have even bigger goals and more things that you

want to achieve so what's your next step what are you you know what do you have

your eye on next what do you want to do next in your career? okay you know after

I attend to these to these conference I then I went to visit our client offices

also and then I was able to figure out that the environment that they are

working it's absolutely different and they want that we have then I just

started to think that we had to transform the whole environment that we

have here in Ecuador and make it more like an environment from from from

the States do you mean like it's more productive more organized or what do you

mean? in in all aspects actually because the people in the States is absolutely more

organized in the things that they have they are owning their products that they

are building they are not wasting any minutes in the in the whole day they are

all the time doing productive things and also in that conference I was able to

gather a lot of knowledge to to Ecuador it was awesome so basically you want to like take the

ideas and everything that you learned and observe there and you want to start

implementing them where you're at to help yeah you know your company your

country everything moves forward yeah absolutely

actually I gave like four or five trainings here for the company here in Ecuator

training? yeah trainings about the same topics that I learned there and

since we have one guy that is from Iran and he speaks just in English I had to

make those trainings also in English you know it was amazing you know because you

know they're here in Ecuator there are many Spanish speakers just and in the

company too but since he just speaking English I made those trainings in

English and it was an absolutely other story that we can talk about in another conversation

that sounds like an awesome project again that a year ago you probably weren't prepared for it so it

seems like you've made some really really incredible strides in your

English and in your career you know over the last six months to a year so I think

that's awesome I bet it feels phenomenal I know there's awesome things in store

for you so what tips do you have for other

English learners that are maybe where you were a year ago like if you could

give them advice what would you tell them okay you just have to take the

challenges you know if you have challenges in your life you just have to

go for them and take them and then just we're really hard to to really achieve

all the goals that you have in your life all the goals that I used to have like

one year ago were related with English stuff so I decided to take them just

look as crazy for for a company from US and and work with them and then I

only had to use my English it was it was not perfect it's not perfect yet today

but you just have to use it you just have to take challenges you have to

don't pay attention to your mistakes to the mistakes that you are making you know

just go for it if you want to get something just go for it

that's that's the place that I can take it well I don't know I think that is

really great advice Rene and I mean it's so so simple but again everything

is in our mind we hold ourselves back I think so much sometimes just because of

fear or excuses you know and so you can make excuses for everything you know say that again if you want you can

have excuses for everything yes oh yeah you can you can but you know I think

with the internet with social media with the

way that we're now able to connect to other people around the world there's no

excuse really there's so much great information on the Internet and then you

just need to practice your English speak with other people and like you did you

joined a program that really helped so when you see the opportunity for

something like that to take it and to realize also that traditional language

education can help you in many ways it can teach you vocabulary and grammar but

at some point you have to cross over and start really using English in the real

world so to speak even if that just means on social media with other English

learners and other English speakers yeah that kind of vocabulary that you're

learning in the Institute is not really helpful because you are just learning

the words and learning the translation into your native language but you are

not using them so you just lost them really well I know I know the struggle

too because like I said I've spent years doing the traditional learning method

and it wasn't until I started speaking Spanish with other Spanish speakers it

was like boom fluency just happened I didn't even have to really even try that

just immersion method works so well because your brain the way it tries to

communicate it forces you to think in another language and like right now I'm

in Italy and the other day we were hanging out with someone who is Italian

and doesn't speak English or Spanish I have no idea how or when I learned so

much Italian but I was talking in Italian and he was understanding me and I mean I

wasn't speaking perfectly at all but you know that's what it is if we need to

have the real communication with each other so anyways Rene is there anything

else you would like to share with us any last thoughts that you have? no I guess

as I told you before I just have to say you thanks because in this year my

whole life changed I mean a lot I have another personality with the people

speaking in English I had those chances that were awesome I was visiting a lot

of cities there in the States I mean I had like the whole that the whole bunch

of dreams that I used to have in my mind when I was a child I was able to achieve

and then now I am going for four other ones you

know you changed my mind absolutely so just thank you you are welcome well thank you

also for I guess believing in me and joining my program when I first launched

because you took a leap of faith there and it worked so that's awesome and it

makes me really happy to hear that you achieved your dreams and that now you're

creating new ones and I want everyone to really hear that and know that it's like

you have dreams in your mind right now you can totally accomplish those within

maybe six months a year a couple years whatever it is you can you can reach

those goals and then you'll be creating new goals things you can't even imagine

I like to say you don't know what you don't know you don't know where you're

gonna be you know because you have to accomplish things first and then more

opportunities will come to you so Rene thank you so much for sharing this

information with us I look forward to following your journey and to learning

more about the many awesome things that you do because I know you're gonna

continue doing amazing things so thank you for joining us and we'll talk soon

okay see you

Between Gulasch Barons and Defending Neutrality - Denmark in WW1 I THE GREAT WAR Special - Duration: 7:23.

We've done a series of specials about what was going on in some of the neutral nations

of Europe during the Great War, and today I'm going to look at Denmark.

I'm Indy Neidell; welcome to a Great War Special episode about Denmark during the First

World War.

In 1864, Prussia and Austria had gone to war with Denmark over the duchies of Schleswig

and Holstein, which resulted in a humiliating peace-treaty for Denmark and the loss of a

bunch of land.

The resulting "national trauma" would define Danish politics for much of the next

century, and Denmark would follow a line of strict neutrality in international affairs.

That was partly, of course, from an existential standpoint - they didn't really want to

anger neighboring Germany and lose even more territory, or worse, lose independence entirely.

Instead, the Danes looked inward and expanded industrial and agricultural output, and increased

their exports to the British and German markets.

The Danish Royal family was also quite active toward the end of the 19th century, marrying

into several of the great houses of Europe, and Danish princes would occupy the thrones

of Greece and Norway.

Russian Tsar Nicholas II and Britain's King George V both had Danish mothers, and until

the War broke out, they often met in the summers at Fredensborg Palace.

Danish politics saw a change just before the world war broke out.

In the 1913 elections, the Social-liberal party rose to prominence, with Carl Theodor

Zahle becoming Prime Minister; a post he would hold until 1920.

His government would introduce some progressive reforms, and women would gain the vote in

1915, but the main priority during the war was to ensure Denmark's neutrality, but

with the country's strategic position at the mouth of the Baltic Sea, this would be

a big challenge.

In fact, early in the war, Germany issued an ultimatum to Denmark to mine the Danish

straits, which would effectively block the Baltic from British marine traffic.

Britain could have interpreted this as a hostile act on Denmark's part, but they didn't

and were mostly sympathetic toward the Danish position.

Neutrality was largely successful, though, and Denmark traded with both Britain and Germany,

much like Sweden, though constant mobilization of the army and shortages of supplies would

remain issues throughout the war.

Most of the trade involved agricultural products.

In fact, up to 90% of Danish exports were agricultural and were often processed products

like butter and bacon.

Now, within the territory lost in 1864 still lived a sizable minority of Danish speaking

people.

They were now citizens of the German Empire, and many were conscripted into the Germany

army to fight on the Western Front.

At least 30,000 of them served, and morale was - as you can imagine - an issue, since

there was the hope that an Allied victory would bring reunification with Denmark.

At least 5,000 Danes fell in service of Germany.

The Danish army itself was - as I said - mobilized.

That happened August 1, 1914, and by the 7th, the peacetime force of 13,500 men had grown

to 47,000 once the reserves were called in.

Now, 10,000 soldiers of this force were left to guard the continental Jutland peninsula

while the rest manned the fortresses around Copenhagen.

The army was known diplomatically as the "security force" and reached its maximum size of 58,000

by the end of the year.

Thing is, maintaining this force was costly, and since the enemy never came the men were

bored silly, which is still better than fighting and dying in a war, but men were gradually

sent home until the force numbered around 30,000.

Had the Germans invaded, fortress Copenhagen would not have been a serious problem for

them.

It had been built at great expense around 30 years before the war and consisted of several

forts and batteries surrounding the city, a forward position that bisected Sealand from

Roskilde to Köge, and the ability to flood much of the northern front.

The idea behind it was to hold the city long enough for foreign powers to intervene, but

by 1914 it was rendered completely obsolete by the power of modern artillery, as we saw

in other fortresses around the continent.

In fact, one of the inner rings of the fortress was the old ramparts of the city, which was

less than a kilometer from Parliament.

As for trade and foreign affairs, that all continued unabated.

In trade with Britain and Germany, there was increasingly the issue of inflated prices

and reduced quality, but that's war for you.

Overall production fell, but the trade boom created many nouveau riche, known as "goulash

barons", who were hated by a pretty big chunk of the Danish population.

Denmark sold some of its last colonies - St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas, which are

today the US Virgin Islands.

They weren't really viable anymore, and if Germany had occupied Denmark they could

use the islands, so why not sell them off?

They got 25 million dollars in gold coin from the US for them, which is around 550 million

today.

Hey, here's something - the German High Command wanted to reintroduce unrestricted

submarine warfare in late 1916, but they didn't.

There was the worry that neutral nations might enter the war if they did so, but they weren't

worried about the US.

See, the Romanian campaign had stretched the German armies so thin that if Denmark had

joined the war because of Danish shipping losses, they could have marched on Berlin

in no time.

It wasn't until after Romania was defeated in the field that the submarine campaign would

begin.

Also, when mentioning submarines, the U-boat that sank the Lusitania, U-20, was grounded

on the western shore of Jutland in November 1916.

The crew tried to blow it up, but only damaged it.

They then abandoned it to its fate.

It was again dynamited in 1925, and its tower is now on display in Thorsminde.

With the German defeat, there were big hopes of regaining the lost lands, though there

had been no battles on Danish soil.

Northern Schleswig was returned to Denmark in 1920, but there was a big controversy over

land - the Easter Crisis.

See, northern and central Schleswig were to decide which country they would be part of

by plebiscite, not southern since it was German dominated and would remain part of Germany.

The north voted to join Denmark, but Central Schleswig voted to join Germany.

This angered Danish nationalists, and King Christian ordered Zahle to include Central

Schleswig in reunification.

Zahle refused and resigned, and the King appointed a new cabinet.

There was a huge public outcry over this, and the future of the monarchy was in jeopardy.

Faced with the overthrow of the crown, Christian backed down and dismissed his government.

New elections were held, and the power of the king as head of state was drastically

reduced.

Of course, that was after the war.

Today was just a general look at what was going on in Denmark during the war, when many

Danes fought and died for a nation and a cause in which they did not believe.
