VLOG 8 | Wonder Women Tech Conference, Long Beach, CA | Aug. 2017 - Duration: 11:33.

Hi, so I'm here outside, um, the wonder con convention.

Wonder…wonder woman con…Where am I at?

I don't even know.

I am here at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach for the women wonder tech conference.

I wanna make sure that that joke that not only funny to me, but resonates with other

people and so, it's pretty simple, you can just punch your grandma and you'll go viral.

Don't do that.

Don't do that, but you could because that's like, shock, and shock goes viral.

But then if you want impact, um, plus relatability, it would be about making a piece of content,

whatever you're making—a video, um, you know a piece of work or art—that people

can feel, that they relate to.

And that they want to share with someone else.

And, you can't grow an audience if you just punch your grandma once, like, that video

on its own will go viral, and we all know that, but people equate Buzzfeed with vitality,

but what we make is shareable content, um, that's the most important metric in our

company is; when someone shares something on their social feed, what are they going

to say?

Are they going to say, that's so me, or are they going to say, we should make this

together.

So to making it a point, to let the stories come from a real place, uh, it

shares better and resonates better because it's honest and its real, and people gravitate

towards that.

And you can feel empowered by laughing and joking with something that you're supposed

to feel ashamed about, you know?

It was a really smart choice.

Thank you.

(laughing) And thanks for um, doing it, also what you do with your blood.

Yeah, it was fun.

Yeah, Jen and I are period sisters, we've now done a few period videos together.

We cycle together.

Uh, there's just not a ton of women you can think of that are bald by choice or bald because

of reasons beyond their control, but that are also seen out there.

So I was like, even though this was not like an actual, like a real experience that I've had,

I wanna sorta of want to highlight those women.

I read this, uh, article, on evaluating where you get your information.

So if you just took a look at your social media feeds and you, you know, evaluate where those

voices are coming from—are they coming from a very homogeneous group or are you getting

a mix of perspectives?

And it's really interesting to see when you hear the voices of different people, or different

perspectives, through just your newsfeed how much that can actually impact your perspective.

Augmented reality is putting the digital into the real world, um, so there's, of course,

phones like PokemonGo, which took over the world, which we were super happy about because

AR, uh, it made AR available to everyone.

We have a stand alone hardware that projects holographic images, so everyone in this room

could see and interact with the digital together. So we do like holograms keynote presentations and holograms

for store front windows that'll catch your attention.

So, so VR is complete emergent, whereas AR is you know, you're taking the real world

and you're implanting uh, hologram, which is super cool.

We make VR games, um, and a big thing for us, is not only being there to experience

what we're building for you, but being there and being the main character.

A cloud is again, another buzzword that has been thrown around over the past couple of

years.

But what that means is being able to leverage cloud architectures and cloud technologies

so that you can build any type of business value faster, right?

So that's number one, number two is being able to leverage what are called APIs that

makes a business digitally successful.

In Google's overall vision, is what is called the API program that a business has.

So it's about how the business utilizes APIs across its enterprise IP, across its front end channels to be

able to build great experiences for its customers, partners, and internal employees.

And thirdly, of course, is machine learning, right?

Um, the premise there, is that you can be able to use machine learning technology so

that you can collect data about how your business has been operating so far and feed that back

in sort of a feedback loop to the business so that you can improve those processes, right?

And many people say, how do you feel about becoming deaf?

And I think, I feel the same, I don't feel any different.

Because I grew up with a family that had full access to communication.

Everybody signed, we could socialize.

I had conversations, by myself.

I was in places that did not use sign language that that accessibility wasn't there and

I was in theater groups and uh, the diversity was there but we were in the south, remember?

We were in Mississippi at that time, and I was at the bar and someone told me to come

over, and I saw someone give me a card and I read it, it said, KKK.

And I'm like, what? I didn't think anything of that.

And I gave it back to him. And went to my friend who was, oh my God, oh my God.

Okay, so, for me, I grew up in a very big family.

So my family did not sign, and because of that isolation, it led me to become more creative.

I was isolated, so it made me became very creative in that.

So don't limit yourself, you have to remember, go forward, do it and it will all come back to you.

If you believe in your work people will believe in it as well.

People want to hear and see and feel what it is that you have to offer.

There are articles, videos, products, services, all kinds of things that are help and support

people with disabilities and their families but they're buried all over the internet.

So, we offer a one stop platform for people with disabilities and their families to

access resources that are customized to their interests and

the details of their disability.

If Netflix can tell us what movie to watch next, there's no reason families like mine

are left to figure everything out on their own.

But we wanted to do more, connecting people with resources is not enough to foster inclusion

in society.

We started noticing that the stories that we were sharing about people

living life to the fullest where actually humanizing and normalizing disability for people who

had no experience with it.

Please don't stand silently by while your company hastily builds a technology solution

to a problem that they haven't taken the time to truly understand, or when they don't truly understand

the beings affected by that problem.

So I just finished up the conference and heading down to the federal bar.

(upbeat background music)

Here at the Pacific of the Aquarium, ending the conference of a very awesome note.

Hi, so I'm here at the Amazon party, at the uh, Aquarium of the Pacific, or, Aquarium

of Long Beach, which was such a great time.

Um, I'm headed home, so hopefully you enjoyed this video.

Bye!

In the cave, where's it's like wonder woman, like back in the day, thousands and

thousands of years, and they're like, what?

Like this moment is when something happened.

So that's the moment that we're doing right now.

I have to have my mean face on, so don't mind me.

10 Ways to Disarm Negative or Difficult People From Your Life - Duration: 10:05.

10 Ways to Disarm Negative or Difficult People

"Dwelling on the negative simply contributes to its power."

~Shirley MacLaine

I love her to death, but it's draining to talk to her.

Every time I call this friend of mine, I know what I'm in for: a half-hour rant about

everything that's difficult, miserable, or unfair.

Sometimes she focuses on the people she feels have wronged her, and other times she explores

the general hopelessness of life.

She never calls to see how I'm doing, and she rarely listens to what's going on in

my life for more than a minute before shifting the focus back to herself.

I tell myself I call because I care, but sometimes I wonder if I have ulterior motives to pump

up my ego offering good advice or even to feel better about my own reality.

I'm no saint, and if there's one thing I know well, it's that we only do things

repeatedly if we believe there's something in it for us.

Even if that something is just to feel needed.

While I believe everyone deserves compassion, I understand what she meant after reading

more.

She went on to describe her offensive, sexist, racist boss who emotionally exhausts everyone

around him.

He sounds a lot more hateful than my friend, who is sadly, just terribly depressed.

But these people have one thing in common: boundless negative energy that ends up affecting

everyone around them.

So today I started thinking about how we interact with negative or difficult people.

People who seem chronically critical, belligerent, indignant, angry, or just plain rude.

When someone repeatedly drains everyone around them, how do you maintain a sense of compassion

without getting sucked into their doom?

And how do you act in a way that doesn't reinforce their negativity and maybe even

helps them?

So here are the things that might help you deal with negative or difficult people.

1.

Resist the urge to judge or assume.

It's hard to offer someone compassion when you assume you have them pegged.

He's a jerk.

She's a malcontent.

He's an–insert other choice noun.

Even if it seems unlikely someone will wake up one day and act differently, we have to

remember it is possible.

When you think negative thoughts, it comes out in your body language.

Someone prone to negativity may feel all too tempted to mirror that.

Try coming at them with the positive mindset you wish they had.

Expect the best in them.

You never know when you might be pleasantly surprised.

2.

Dig deeper, but stay out of the hole.

It's always easier to offer someone compassion if you try to understand where they're coming

from.

But that can't completely justify bad behavior.

If you show negative people you support their choice to behave badly, you give them no real

incentive to make a change (which they may actually want deep down).

It may help to repeat this in your head when you deal with them: "I understand your pain.

But I'm most helpful if I don't feed into it."

This might help you approach them with both kindness and firmness so they don't bring

you down with them.

3.

Maintain a positive boundary.

Some people might tell you to visualize a bright white light around you to maintain

a positive space when other people enter it with negativity.

This doesn't actually work for me because I respond better to ideas in words than visualizations.

So I tell myself this, "I can only control the positive space I create around myself."

Then when I interact with this person, I try to do two things, in this order of importance:

Protect the positive space around me.

When their negativity is too strong to protect it, I need to walk away.

Or the 2nd thing, help them feel more positive, not act more positive which is more likely

to create the desired result.

4.

Disarm their negativity, even if just for now.

This goes back to the ideas above.

I know my depressed friend will rant about life's injustices as long as I let her.

Part of me feels tempted to play amateur psychiatrist, get her talking, and then try to help her

reframe situations into a more positive light.

Then I remind myself that I can't change her whole way of being in one phone call.

She has to want that.

I also can't listen for hours on end, as I've done in the past.

But I can listen compassionately for a short while and then help her focus on something

positive right now, in this moment.

I can ask about her upcoming birthday.

I can remind her it's a beautiful day for a walk.

Don't try to solve or fix them.

Just aim to help them now.

5.

Temper your emotional response.

Negative people often gravitate toward others who react strongly, people who easily offer

compassion or get outraged or offended.

I suspect this gives them a little light in the darkness of their inner world, a sense

that they're not floating alone in their own anger or sadness.

People remember and learn from what you do more than what you say.

If you feed into the situation with emotions, you'll teach them they can depend on you

for a reaction.

It's tough not to react because we're human, but it's worth practicing.

Once you've offered a compassionate ear for as long as you can, respond as calmly

as possible with a simple line of fact.

If you're dealing with a rude or angry person, you may want to change the subject to something

unrelated: "Dancing with the Stars is on tonight.

Planning to watch it?"

6.

Question what you're getting out of it.

Like I mentioned above, we often get something out of relationships with negative people.

Get real honest with yourself: have you fallen into a caretaker role because it makes you

feel needed?

Have you maintained the relationship so you can gossip about this person in a holier than

your way with others?

Do you have some sort of stake in keeping the things the way they are?

Questioning yourself helps you change the way you respond which is really all you can

control.

You can't make someone think, feel, or act differently.

You can be as kind as possible or as combative as possible, and still not change reality

for someone else.

All you can control is what you think and do, and then do your best to help them without

hurting yourself.

7.

Remember the numbers.

Research shows that people with negative attitudes have significantly higher rates of stress

and disease.

Someone's mental state plays a huge role in their physical health.

If someone's making life difficult for people around them, you can be sure they're doing

worse for themselves.

What a sad reality, that someone has so much pain inside them they have to act out just

to feel some sense of relief, even if that relief comes from getting a rise out of people.

When you remember how much a difficult person is suffering, it's easier to stay focused

on minimizing negativity, as opposed to defending yourself.

8.

Don't take it personally, but know that sometimes it is personal.

Conventional wisdom suggests that you should never take things personally when you deal

with a negative person.

I think it's a little more complicated than that.

You can't write off everything someone says about you just because the person is insensitive

or tactless.

Even an abrasive person may have a valid point.

Try to weigh their comments with a willingness to learn.

Accept that you don't deserve the excessive emotions in someone's tone, but weigh their

ideas with a willingness to learn.

Some of the most useful lessons I've learned came from people I wished weren't right.

9.

Act instead of just reacting.

Oftentimes we wait until someone gets angry or depressed before we try to buoy their spirits.

If you know someone who seems to deal with difficult thoughts or feelings often (as demonstrated

in their behavior), don't wait for a situation to help them create positive feelings.

Give them a compliment for something they did well.

Remind them of a moment when they were happy, as in "Remember when you scored that touchdown

during the company picnic?

That was awesome!"

You're more apt to want to boost them up when they haven't brought you down.

This may help mitigate that later and also give them a little relief from their pain.

10.

Maintain the right relationship based on reality as it is.

With my friend, I'm always wishing she could be more positive.

I consistently put myself in situations where I feel bad because I want to help, because

I want her to be happy.

I've recently realized the best I can do is accept her as she is, let her know I believe

in her ability to be happy, and then give her space to make the choice.

That means gently bringing our conversation to a close after I've made an effort to

help.

Or cutting short a night out if I've done all I can and it's draining me.

Hopefully she'll want to change some day.

Until then, all I can do is love her, while loving myself enough to take care of my needs.

That often means putting them first.

Well, that's the 10 ways to deal with negative or difficult people.

Hopefully after watching this video you can manage yourself more in order to deal with

Mystic Magic by John Ludgate - Duration: 4:19.

Darkness falls, the headlights shine, I follow that thin white line

The day's coming to an end

I'm still on this road, I got a long, long way to go

Just me the dark and this dashboard again

Talk, talk, talk on the radio, it's getting tired, it's getting old

I change the station, I turn the dial

Flip around 'til the static's gone, Tom Petty's voice coming on strong

Three minutes of mystic magic for the next three miles

The song surrounds, the here and the now, with a moment from a long gone yesterday

The sound goes round and a piece of what was lost gets found and the years, they slip away

Into the great wide open, time's chains get broken, free falling, learning to fly

Running down a dream, you don't have to live like a refugee, even the losers get lucky sometime

You can move on but you'll never break free of who you once wanted to be

What you used to know and those dreams that were yours to hold

Tom Petty might be gone but his song lives on, the last DJ coming on strong

Three minutes of mystic magic on this old road

The song surrounds, the here and the now, with a moment from a long gone yesterday

The sound goes round and a piece of what was lost gets found and the years, they slip away

Into the great wide open, time's chains get broken, free falling, learning to fly

Running down a dream, you don't have to live like a refugee, even the losers get lucky sometime

…free falling, learning to fly

…free falling, learning to fly

…free falling

Don't confuse success with leadership - Duration: 2:43.

Hi Everybody Dave McKeown from Outfield Leadership here.

I'd like to talk about confusing leadership with success.

We have a terrible habit of promoting people to a level of incompetence.

Not because there's anything wrong with them necessarily but more so because we conflate

functional success with leadership.

So a good sales person becomes a sales manager, a good sales manager becomes a sales director,

a good sales director becomes a sales VP.

But somewhere along the line something breaks down.

The person's ability as a functional manager become less important than their ability to

work as an organizational leader.

At some point that individual needs to elevate their horizon of focus away from managing

their team and doing a good job of it - to managing laterally.

So that when they walk into the room and sit around the leadership table with the group

of directors or the senior leadership group - that becomes their band of sisters and brothers.

They become just as, if not more, important than their functional group.

In fact at a certain point in a leader's growth you shouldn't get anymore brownie points

for being able to manage your function, that's your job.

That just gets you a seat at the table.

Where you succeed is in your ability to manage across the organization to break down barriers,

bust silos and solve complex cross-functional issues.

That's easier said than done.

Most leaders can understand from an academic perspective the need to work across the organization

but when push comes to shove they'll always go to bat for 'their team'.

My one bit of advice to anyone who is looking to become a more effective leader.

Don't work in silos, don't adopt an us and them mentality between divisions, departments,

teams.

The easiest way to do that is to start to think about your internal customer.

Who do you need to serve internally in order to ultimately serve the external customer.

Who do you have to pass the baton to regularly to ensure you don't drop the ball.

Identify that person and then go take them out for a cup of coffee.

Ask them what they really need from you and your team to deliver consistent quality and

then meet them a month later and a month after that to see if you're delivering what they

need.

Stop viewing your world as a zero sum game and serve the people within your organization

and I guarantee you'll be seen as an ever more valuable leader.
