How to Stitch Orchids with Chain Stitch|DIY Hand Embroidery Tutorial |Orquídeas en Punto Cadeneta - Duration: 14:37.

Hello everyone! I am Olga, I am happy to be with you again

Today we are going to embroider these beautiful orchids in a easy and simple way

with chain stitch

We will need: Light purple, fuchsia and green pearl cotton thread

and dark purple, yellow and white embroidery floss

Let's start!

We take a strand of light purple perlé thread

I knot it in the tip and start doing this part of the orchid

We pass the needle here and fill up with straight stitches

Let's make the petal:

First we make a chain stitch around the selvedge of the petal

we start on this side

when you make this stitch, leave always the strand behind the needle

and make the stitch: passing the needle through the previous stitch

that's how I'm giving it chain shape

I invite you to follow me on my Facebook page

where I will publish new content and further updates of the channel

here you can also leave me your comments, doubts and suggestions

We also have a group on Facebook, I invite you to join it

in which we are going to make different embroidery projects

all participants will be certified

At the tip:

there we pass the needle backward

I turn the embroidery hoop and keep making the stitch

Since we already made the selvedge of the petal

we start filling it on the inside

making chains repeatedly

that should be together until they are completely filled.

We can also make this embroidery with skein threads.

The design of this embroidery and of all we have made

you can find them on my blog Artesd'Olga

in the description of this video and in the first comment I write the link

here I already filled it completely

I pass the needle backward and rivet.

In this way, fill this other petal

Now, fill this part

we start here following the design by making chain stitch

now we completely fill

Let's make this petal:

we start here, making the chain around and then fill it completely

I remind you that you can follow me on Instagram

also here you can leave me your doubts, opinions and suggestions

in the same way, fill the petal on the other side

we make the front petal with this fuchsia perle thread

I start it here the same way as the previous ones

first I make the selvedge and fill it completely

with this dark purple thread with 3 strands

we make these lines that has each petal

These are made with stem stitch

now, we are going to make the center of the orchid

For this we need: a head pin

I put it this way

we make it with yellow embroidery floss with three strands

I pass the needle here

we turn the fabric

and we turn the thread four times behind the pin

and then I pass the needle backward where I took it out and rivet

with white thread if it is skein thread then use 6 strands

let's hold the center of the orchid

I make a stitch on each side of the pin

and then I take it out.

and I make two more stitches to hold it completely.

Now, with two strands of skein thread

We make these little stitches

We make the branches and leaves with green pearl cotton thread

Nós fazemos cada ramo com ponto de haste.

The leaf is made with fishbone stitch as follows:

a long stitch on the tip

and fill it with stitches from the sides to the center

making them crossed here

This stitch is called fishbone.

That's how these beautiful orchids with chain stitch look.

Very easy to make! Go ahead and make them!

so you can give this special touch to your favorite garment

I recommend these two tutorials that I'm sure you'll love.

Thank you very much, until the next video.

NUDE MAKEUP TUTORIAL | AMY MAKEUP - Duration: 11:01.

Hi guys, welcome to my channel

Amy Makeup

Today I will show you how to do

a nude makeup for day to day

If you wanna know how to do it, stay

and keep watching

Ok, first we start

placing the concealer

all about the lid

as mobile as immovable

to use it as shadow primer

then, we're also going to define

our eyebrow, this way

we start to put the concealer under de brow bone

spreading it

to both sides

after we spread it down

with pointing motions

all over the

to the mobile and immovable lid,

to use it as primer

Then we're going to blend it with a sponge

in my case, is this right here

and always blending it down

I mean, within the lid

and we repeat the process in the other eye

next, we take some translucent powder

in this case, I use this from Valmy

On the tone #01

take a little bit with the brush

take off the excess

and proceed to set it

all over the lid

so, this is how this looks

after setting it with the translucent

powder . So

I'm gonna take from this palette I have rigt here

a bit of white shadow

from this

take a little little bit

to iluminate below the

eyebrow arch

It's a tiny difference that maybe you don't notice

a lot,

but, believe me

it makes the difference. As the makeup we're going to do

today. It's in earth tones

that are my favorites, by the way

why the dogs freak out? and why the people wanna build today

* sighs *

well, excuse me for all the noises

but, the noise you just listened

It's from a construction

from the next urbanization. So

you're going to listen it for the rest of your lives

just kidding, but at least for the rest of this video

ok, and now I'm gonna take from this

shadow trio. This first

shadow from PERSONI

that is like a soft orange

and we take off the excess

this will be our transition tone for the shadows

remember that whenever you're going to makeup

always you must have a transition tone, that you're going to apply

on the crease

for the colors looking more blended, because

the secret of makeup it's on

blending it all too well

And that's how it looks

with the first color we took

Thereafter, I'm gonna take

This bullet brush

To deepen the crease with a darker color

this is

#PF-4 from Pfifery

When we already have this color

We're going to take from this palette

that name's Meet Matt(e) Nude

the color

that calls

Matt Rosen

After we take Matt Rosen

As always

and take off the excess

and we're going to blend the crease

but near to the mobile lid

inside

and mix well with the last color

Then, we're going to swipe

the edges

and blend it with the brush we used previously

ok, after that

we may take a shimmer or metallic shadow

and

set it on the mobile lid

*I'd like the people of the building to shut up*

in this case, I'll be using

the shade called "pot of gold"

it's the #150

from Sonya

O Sonya idk

I'll be putting

a little of setting spray

I'll be putting a bit of setting spray

for it to shine so much

this shadow I have right here

I'm applying it with a cat's tongue brush

And we're gonna apply it all over the mobile lid

After having finished with skin

we proceed to make a mirror effect

on the lower lash line

we take the first color we applied on the crease

and we apply it from

the external corner to the internal

joining them

with the end of the

higher lid's makeup

then we take

the color from the second palette

with the same brush

over the lash line

to...

the middle of the eye

we take the golden shadow and we spread it, all over

the lash line until the middle

then we apply mascara

on the lower lashes

after having finished the yes and skin

proceed to apply finally the lipstick

in this case i'll be wearing th tone

terracota from PERSONI

I can tell, this look is finished

Crazy Hillary Clinton Is Back, And What She Just Did Will Make Your Blood Boil. - Duration: 5:07.

Crazy Hillary Clinton Is Back, And What She Just Did Will Make Your Blood Boil.

Is it still 2016?

I could have sworn the calendar says 2018.

Yet, we still have to sit and listen to the rantings of loser Hillary Clinton.

This woman refuses to go quietly into the night.

Instead, she's back again, and what she just did will make your blood boil.

We're getting to the point where average Americans are beginning to hate the Democrats.

Yes, it's wrong to hate people, but when an entire political party behaves like deranged

children, how else can you respond?

Every last one of them, from Chuck Schumer to Maxine Waters, rants like maniacs.

They seem to have no grip on reality.

Instead, they continue to make wild and bogus claims about America, Republicans, and the

President of the United States.

Obviously, worst of them all is the loser, Hillary Clinton.

She just can't get over how she lost the election to Donald Trump.

Her dreams of taking over America — dictator-style — were crushed for good.

You'd think she would just humbly accept that reality and retire, go buy a house with

her ill-gotten money, and start gardening or something.

Not this woman.

Her ego — and debts to powerful donors — requires that she explain her election loss.

After going on a blame-tour last year and publishing a bogus book, she's back again,

making wild claims.

Of course, she is blaming, as per usual, misogyny and sexism for her loss because there aren't

any other reasons Americans wanted this criminal far, far away from the White House.

Hillary Clinton on Monday returned to blaming "misogyny" and "sexism" for contributing

to her 2016 election loss, during a Washington appearance that followed a critical report

on how she handled sexual harassment allegations during her 2008 campaign.

Clinton presented the "Human Rights Awards" Monday at Georgetown University, where she

sits as honorary founding chair of the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security.

Clinton spoke about the importance of female leadership in advancing human rights, justice

and peace, and went on to discuss the 2016 election during a panel segment.

[Source: Fox News]

"Any of you who've read my book about 'what happened' know that I think misogyny

and sexism was part of that campaign — it was one of the contributing factors," Hillary

told the audience at Georgetown while she was there to present the "Human Rights Awards."

She added, "Some of it was old-fashioned sexism and the refusal to accept the equality

of women, and certainly the equality of women's leadership."

No, you lying cow, it's because you're a comic-book level super villain, on par with

Lex Luther and Two Face.

You've had a terrible reputation since the 70's.

People who meet you in person have very little good to say.

As Secretary of State, you let American soldiers and a diplomat die in Benghazi.

Not to mention the scandals surrounding your closest advisers and your illegal email server.

Oh, and there's this little thing about the unsolved murder of Seth Rich.

But, no, "old-fashioned" sexism cost you the election.

Sorry, but just being a woman doesn't automatically make you eligible for the White House.

Most people voted for Donald Trump because he's a successful businessman who was promising

to put America first in order to make America great again.

He didn't have a laundry list of crimes that made voters scared to even think about

him.

I choked when I saw she was giving out "Human Rights Awards."

Her?

This is the woman who robbed an entire country — Haiti — out of relief aid, then went

on to undermine their elections, letting a pop star become president.

This is the woman who ignores the cries of her husband's victims and a woman who used

the State Department as her personal slush fund,

Yeah, she knows plenty about human rights.

In that, she knows how to violate them.

Now, we learn she ignored sex abuse accusations within her own campaign.

Women were being harassed by staff.

Hillary Clinton ignored the news.

She merely "shifted" the violator to a new role in her campaign.

You'd think a "champion" of human rights would have fired the guy with extreme prejudice.

I guess Clinton operates under a "Do as I say, not as I do," policy.

The fact that she continues to make excuses for her loss tells you everything you need

to know about the woman.

She's petty, vindictive, selfish, and self-centered.

She will never get over losing the election to Donald Trump.

And, she will continue to punish us with her complaints until her last day on earth.

For a feminist, she really fills the role of a nagging housewife, doesn't she?

Not very progressive of her.

what do you think about this?

I Started Physical Therapy | #SpinaBifida - Duration: 4:35.

Hey everyone, welcome to #SpinaBifida.

(pop)

I'm sorry for all the construction noise you may hear

I have to film this really quick because I have to go to work.

But I wanted to talk to you about physical therapy.

In December of 2017, my doctors and I

specifically my pain management doctor and I

decided we were going to try physical therapy

to help manage my pain.

If you didn't know, constantly in pain. I'm always in pain.

But as of late, my pain has been too much

To the point that even the motrin I take doesn't

really help.

So we decided maybe physical therapy would work.

Or at least improve it.

Now the last time I took physical therapy

was when I was a kid.

And that was mostly to just re-learn how to use

my feet around the time I lost feeling in my feet.

And it was common for kids with Spina Bifida

to do physical therapy and occupational therapy.

But this physical therapy is specifically for pain management.

I only got one clip of me going.

(office sounds along with background music)

You can't really record or take any photos in there.

I might ask if I'm in private rooms could I record.

But honestly, at this appointment I was just more

focused on myself than filming.

So I kinda wanted to share for the first day what it was like.

As an adult doing physical therapy.

First off my physical therapist was really nice.

He's this young dude and we clicked right away

which I think is important when you have a physical therapist.

So in the appointment we talked about

some goals I wanted.

Where my pain was, then we watched me walk back and forth.

To see how my walk was.

I also have to note, physical therapy is very different for everybody.

So for me my physical therapy is tailored towards my body

and how my body is with my Spina Bifida.

Then he checked my balance.

Ironically, it's always been like this, my right foot

which has the most nerve damage, I have better balance on

than my left foot which has the least amount of nerve damage.

I don't know why.

And then he checked the strength of my legs.

And this part shocked him and me.

Because of what I was explaining to him on how I feel

a lot when I walk on my legs.

He was surprised to find out I actually have a lot of leg strength.

I thought personally I was losing a lot of my leg strength.

But it turns out I have a lot.

My body already learned habits on how to compensate

without feeling my feet.

And that when I get up from a chair I do rely on my arms more than I do my legs.

And my physical therapist was like "That's not a bad thing".

"That's how your body compensated and I don't

want to get rid of that."

Because he felt at a certain point if I don't trust my legs

depending on what I'm doing, he wants me to use my arms.

As a safety net.

But he wants me to teach my brain to trust my legs again.

And to use them because he feels like I'm not using my legs

to the full capacity that I could use them at.

Because the strength is there, I just don't know how to use it.

And he thinks since I'm not using my body

and I'm scare to use my body

that I'm really stiff.

And that could also be a reason why I'm in so much pain.

That's where we kinda got at with this like

introduction meeting for physical therapy.

So I have a few homework assignments

one is just stretching my pelvis.

Some pelvic thrusts!

Thrusts! (laughs)

Because a lot of my pain is in my lower back and pelvis area.

So I have to do like hip thrusts.

And then the other one is sitting down in a chair

and then getting up and then slowly sitting down

but not using my arms.

Just solely relying on my legs.

And that one is really difficult for me.

I know it seems like a very easy action if that's

something that's easy for you but it's

(exhales)

so difficult.

And that's my homework!

So I have physical therapy every Friday

for the whole month of February at this moment.

I think right now for these #SpinaBifida videos

I'm gunna just kinda like recap and document

what it's like as an adult because

it's a star contrast for me from being a kid

and doing physical therapy and as a kid they were trying to

"fix things" or teach me I guess how to function with my mobility.

Now it's just learning how to use my body.

And use the strength and trust the strength that I have.

So that's all I have for you for today on #SpinaBifida.

What kind of questions do you have

about physical therapy.

I'll try to answer them to my best ability but again

physical therapy is very different for everybody.

So thank you for watching, don't forget to like and subscribe.

And if you like my work and wanna help support me

the links to my Patreon and PayPal are down below.

And I will see all of you next time.

Bye!

Refugee Admissions From Terrorist Hotbeds Fell Over 80 Percent i - Duration: 5:04.

Refugee Admissions From Terrorist Hotbeds Fell Over 80 Percent in Trumps First Year

Data shows that President Donald Trump is on his way to fulfilling another campaign

promise: to limit refugee admissions from terror-prone regions.

There has been an 81 percent decline in the number of refugees from the seven countries

identified as terrorist hotbeds since President Donald Trumps inauguration, according to

the State Departments Refugee Processing Center admissions data.

The number of refugees arriving from Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Iran, Sudan, Yemen, and Libya

dropped from 45,114 in 2016 to 6,475 in 2017, Breitbart reported.

123 refugees arrived per day in the United States from those seven countries under the

Obama administration in 2016.

In contrast, during the first eight months of the Trump administration, that number fell

to 32 refugees arriving per day.

In the last three months of 2017, only three refugees arrived per day.

These numbers show that Trump is well on his way to fulfilling more promises he made on

the campaign trail.

When Im elected president, we will suspend the Syrian refugee program and we will keep

radical Islamic terrorists the hell out of our country, he said in 2016, according

to Breitbart.

Trump added, And we will pause admissions from terror-prone regions until a full security

assessment has been performed, and until a proven vetting mechanism has been established.

The number of refugee arrivals from each of the seven terrorist hotbeds countries

has also significantly dropped.

Only 1,972 refugees came from Syria in 2017, an 88 percent decline from the 16,395 arrivals

in 2016.

Refugee arrivals from Iraq dropped 80 percent from 11,940 in 2016 to 2,308 in 2017.

There was a 77 percent decline in refugee arrivals from Somalia, with 10,811 arriving

during former President Barack Obamas final year in office and only 2,454 arriving during

Trumps first year in office.

Only 601 refugees came from Sudan in 2017, a 61 percent drop from the 1,524 that arrived

in 2016.

The number of refugee arrivals from Libya and Yemen in 2017 was low with none coming

from Libya and only 16 from Yemen.

Refugee admissions overall have declined by 70 percent since Trump took office.

From Jan. 21, 2017 to Jan. 20, 2018, only 29,620 refugees have been admitted into the

U.S.

The previous year, a total of 98,898 refugees were admitted under Obama.

The rapid decline of refugee admissions shows the broad effect of the Trump administrations

immigration policies.

If the current admission rate continues, the number of refugees granted asylum in the U.S.

will not come close to the 2018 refugee ceiling of 45,000 Trump set last year, Fox News reported.

Our job is to balance the need to protect legitimate refugees with the need to protect

our security, Jennifer Higgins from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

agency told The Wall Street Journal.

The president of Refugees International, Eric Schwartz, told The Journal that the drop in

refugee admissions is enormously discouraging and dispiriting, and it is another reflection

of this administrations march away from the principle of humanity.

Higgins dismissed allegations that the U.S. is turning back on refugees, citing

that numbers usually fluctuate due to new initiatives and rescreening refugee applicants.

The premise that we are turning our backs on them is patently wrong.

Am I enabling my child by helping them if they use drugs or alcohol? - Duration: 1:29.

Parents are often told that they're enabling their child when all they

really want to do is help them. Actually, enabling refers to inadvertently

rewarding your child's using. So, for example, say your child is hungover and

in bed and you call work to give an excuse for not being there or you give

your child money because they've run out from using substances, it's natural to

want to be able to help your child out, but it doesn't help them learn from

their choices and decisions. We like to teach parents how to reinforce positive

behavior and ignore unwanted behaviors. So, for example, there is a dad who wanted

to make his daughter waffles for breakfast on Sunday mornings. But she was

still smoking pot on and off. He didn't want to inadvertently reward that

behavior, so what he decided to do was he would make her waffles in the morning if

she didn't smoke pot the night before. But, if she didn't smoke pot the night

before, he wouldn't make the waffles for her. Now, in another example, say you give

your child a curfew of midnight and your child hits that curfew for a two-week

period, you might want to buy them a tank of gas. And in this case, what I'd

recommend is that you go to the gas station with your child and buy it for

them, rather than give them cash. So understand that this is a difficult

process and you need to be patient with yourself. It's okay to do something nice

for your child. After all, you love them and you want to stay connected with them.

Well, he provoked me, she provoked me, I did not want to but after how this man behaved, what he said -

idiotically, annoyingly - I had to react like that.

How many times do we explain our behavior, our hopeless behavior,

our aggression, our sloppiness with the fact that someone provoked us.

It's a lie. That's what Jesus is saying today. This is nonsense and a lie.

No one can provoke us if there is no such need

and weakness in our heart, and lack of balance and immaturity

that causes some immature, stupid, hurtful behavior.

This is a matter of my measure and not of external provocation.

Tara Talks: A Tide Pool within the River of Impermanence - Duration: 3:00.

[music]

Humans have this heightened self-awareness of our mortality

and that same self-awareness, when we deepen it, really,

helps us to recognize how our survival system is keeping us in suffering

and helps us to wake up, which is really what we're going to be exploring,

that we can bring our mindful awareness to our strategies of avoiding and grasping

in a way that helps us to break those patterns, interrupt them

and really open to the changing flow and not keep trying to control it.

A metaphor that I like, I find this helpful because I spend a lot of time by a river,

is to imagine, you know, this river of life is moving through us all the time,

but we tend to remove ourselves from it and we kind of create - it's like creating a tidal pool,

where we kind of wall out the whole river and we kind of try to manage things in that little tidal pool

and because with the tidal pool it's blocking the whole flow,

things can get filled with algae blooms and get stagnant and so on but

our life gets kind of small, and the more we wall off,

the flow of impermanence, you know, the more controlling we are,

the more unwilling we are to live in uncertainty, you know,

the more we get rigid and static and it's suffering

but we're really playing out fully the management strategies.

I often think of John O'Donoghue, he has this phrase, he said that "We're so busy managing our life

so as to cover over this great mystery we're involved in".

And I can feel it in myself; I can feel when I'm anxious and busy in some way I'm

you know, kind of like skimming the surface, trying to keep everything together and

it's like I've completely separated from just moment-to-moment this astonishing universe...

It's like whenever I lose that sense of amazement like "wow!"

I know I'm in management mode because it covers it right over...

So the most basic level of our training, if we want to begin to open to impermanence,

is to wake up out of thoughts and come into our senses.

CLASSIC TUNA CASSEROLE | Easy! Tasty! - Duration: 3:39.

A classic casserole.

Coming right up on Weekend at the Cottage.

If you've never made a casserole put your hand up.

Well actually I get to put my hand down because I finally made a beautiful Tuna Casserole.

I had a discussion with a lovely lady on a plane.

I was returning home from a trip and she and I went through the whole concept of casseroles.

I think the concept is quite interesting it evolved out of necessity.

People who were busy,

people needed a dinner that to come together real quick - This is it!

The casserole recipe starts at stove top.

First of all, we need to boil off some pasta.

The lady suggested egg noodles.

I love that idea. We're using a flat egg noodle about half of a package and

you're going to think that doesn't look like a lot of pasta,

but when you add the other ingredients in it's just right.

Another traditional ingredient in casseroles is cans of prepared mushroom or celery soup.

Instead of doing that I thought we do our casserole from scratch.

I'm over at stovetop medium saucepan medium heat and

I'm adding 2 T of butter,

I finely chopped 1 white onion.

Cook the onion till it's translucent ,

then we add a 1/4 C of flour. Stir so the flour cooks and covers all of the onions.

Then 1 1/3 C of milk. We add the milk stir and your sauce will thicken.

Right about now your pasta is done.

Drain your pasta, take your sauce off the stove and then

head to your work surface.

Into a medium bowl we transfer our cooked pasta.

2 cans of tuna, drained.

2 C of frozen peas.

We add our sauce and then we stir everything together.

We transfer to an 8 by 11 glass casserole dish.

Last 2 ingredients are genius! We have 1 C of grated Canadian cheddar

and then finally you have an option here,

you can do 1 C of crushed cornflakes or

1 C of buttered bread crumbs or how about potato chips?

Open at the top take a rolling pin smash them around

and then cover the top of your casserole with the crushed potato chips.

Tuna casserole goes into a preheated 400 degree oven.

We're going bake it for 25 minutes.

Take it out of the oven, give it about maybe 5 minutes just to calm downa little bit

and then you'll serve out a portion.

I think this size, this 8 x 11, would probably serve a family of four,

lke, generously.

I think it would serve a party of six, no problem and

I think it's a lovely idea for a meal if you're pressed for time.

It looks as good as it tastes let me tell you.

yummmm, chips are crunchy.

mmm, I like the egg noodle, tuna, peas. YUM!!

Tuna Casserole - a CLASSIC right here on this plate!

A Labor legend who passed away on the 28th January, aged 103 years.

Mary had a rich, full life.

Much of it devoted to our party and to our movement.

Mary was the matriarch of a family of Labor warriors.

Fiercely loyal to her husband of 63 years, Frank Crean, who served as the Member for Melbourne

Ports for 26 years and her sons, Simon Crean, my predecessor in Hotham and former Labor leader.

David, a former Tasmanian Labor treasurer and the late Steven Crean who was a public servant.

Mary was a spear carrier for our movement - her political smarts gained the respect

of some of the most senior people in our party who were known to seek her out to discuss

the political issues of the day.

She was passionate, compassionate, smart and loyal.

She was a great contributer.

Had she been born in this century, Speaker, she might have had a shot at being Prime Minister herself.

Mary devoted her life to others.

From the local kindergarten to the Red Cross, from the Girl Guides to the National Gallery

of Victoria.

The community I serve in Victoria and the movement and the party I represent in this

Parliament owe Mary a great deal.

She was a stellar human being, deeply respected on both sides of politics, so I know when

I speak for all of us in the chamber today, Deputy Speaker, when I send the chambers deepest

condolences to the Crean family.

And our great respect and thanks to Mary - for all she contributed and achieved.

May she rest in peace.

The next big public health emergency and more: Q&A with public health law expert James Hodge - Duration: 2:38.

And you're good.

OK.

Hi, I'm James Hodge, professor of public health law and ethics here at the Sandra Day O'Connor

College of Law at ASU.

What's the hardest part of being a professor?

That's a neat question.

I'd say the hardest part is matching wits with students who are frankly smarter than me.

What do you teach?

I teach the full gamut of health law courses from anchor course in health, law and policy,

public health law, bioethics and the law, global health law.

What advice do you have for new doctors in the healthcare system?

You're in it.

Get to know it.

Talk to attorneys any time you can.

Learn about the policy choices that impact how you deliver care to patients.

What advice would you give to law students?

Get in the game.

Don't wait until law school's done before you're actually working in real policy arenas.

Twitter or Instagram?

No time.

Snapchat or Facebook?

A little bit of Facebook.

What are you most proud of?

Gosh, one great wife, three great kids.

How is the internet changing healthcare?

Gosh, self-medication for so many people.

Do you Google your health problems?

No.

Are we adequately funding public health emergencies?

Not remotely.

What is a public health emergency?

Sure.

An emergency is the opioid epidemic right now that's sweeping across the country.

It's serious.

It's a killer.

Who else should be held accountable in the opioid crisis?

Literally everyone.

Everyone's that's funding it, everyone that's using the product, everyone that is now aware

of the significant risks and not adjusting for it.

How do we end the opioid crisis?

It's going to take a dedicated, sustained level of funding and a change in attitude

of all Americans about the role of opioids within the treatment of pain.

What gives you hope?

The next generation of persons I get to work with and their really fantastic ideas.

What is the next major public health crisis?

The crisis of the mind.

How do we deal with the crisis of the mind?

It's so complicated.

These are the types of circumstances that most people want to hide.

And the idea that you have a mental health condition is something that we've been hiding

for hundreds of years.

It's time to bring them out of the open, time to treat them, time to screen for them,

time to fund real examples of treatments that may work.

It's time to find cures for some of the most prevalent crisis issues in relation to mental

health in the United States and globally.

What's the weirdest work question you've received?

Honestly, that question.

(laughing)

OK, thanks so much, James, we appreciate it.

OK, great.

We're all good?

Yeah.

Excellent.

OK, super.

That was a fun set, for sure.

BILLS - Criminal Code Amendment (Firearms Trafficking) Bill - Duration: 1:37.

Everyone in this chamber, everyone in this House, who works in this building, should

know that, for 8 months, this country could have had tougher, stronger gun laws—gun laws

that had bipartisan support—but, because Minister didn't want to be ashamed to have

to come into this chamber and support what is essentially a Labor-written bill, Deputy

Speaker, we have not had those laws in place.

Such is the height that politics takes over good public policy with the Minister who operates

on the other side of the chamber.

So Deputy Speaker, the Liberals and the coalition on the other side of the House have two choices.

They can vote for the bill that was sent back from the Senate.

A good piece of law, a law that was mainly written by Labor but with the assistance of

some amendments made by crossbenchers up in the Senate.

It's a good law that will make the community safer.

In fact, it's a good law that could have been in place since February, Deputy Speaker.

It's a good law that the government voted for.

We could have this law in place tonight in this Parliament, but instead what do we see?

The Justice Minister comes in and tries to play politics once again.

What is he trying to achieve Deputy Speaker?

Because if he thinks he's going to win this debate by preventing this from becoming Australian

law tonight, and then sending a bill he knows the Senate will not agree to back to the Senate

- then he is making a mockery of his position and he is showing us up to be the petty politician

that he is Deputy Speaker.

Federation Chamber - Cambodia Speech 05.02.2018 - Duration: 5:00.

I call the Member for Hotham.

Thank you Deputy Speaker and I rise today, in sadness and in anger, to express my deep

concerns about the ongoing human rights abuses that are occurring in Cambodia.

I do so because I hold this incredibly great privilege of representing so many thousands

of Cambodian Australians in this Parliament.

Deputy Speaker, MPs will note that this is not the first time I've stood in the parliament and raised these issues.

In September 2017 I addressed a public gathering of hundreds of Cambodian Australians at Springvale

Town Hall.

Last year I and other members of Parliament addressed a similar public gathering here

on the lawns of Parliament House.

I stood alongside the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mu Sochua, here at Parliament

House, as she expressed her deepest distress and sadness about what is a growing political

crisis in Cambodia.

Deputy Speaker, the reason I am again on my feet on this critically important issue for our region is that nothing

is changing.

In fact, things are getting worse by the minute.

Deputy Speaker, we know that Cambodia has a general election due on 29 June 2018.

We are not doing enough as a Parliament; we are not doing enough as a country, to make

absolutely clear our view to the Cambodian government that there must be a guarantee

of free and fair elections in Cambodia in June this year.

The current Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Sen, stated late last year that the 2018 national

election result does not require international recognition to be valid.

This is the latest sign of his determination to continue to hold power after almost 33

years in office.

I spoke last year about what I regard as an absolute outrage against democracy, when the

opposition party in Cambodia was disbanded and the seats held by those opposition party

leaders were distributed amongst other parties.

Over half of Cambodia's opposition MPs fled the country.

Cambodia became a multiparty democracy in 1993. But we know since that time

there was a flourishing of democracy.

Since then, there have been people who want to hold power in Cambodia, who continue to

try to suppress freedom of expression and the political rights of the Cambodian people.

Last year, the Cambodian opposition leader, Kem Sokha, was arrested on so-called treason charges.

He was charged with treason on the basis of a speech that he made in Melbourne, in my

electorate, back in 2013.

In July 2013, the last general election was held in Cambodia.

There was a fear that those elections would not be held fairly, and that was founded reasonably,

I think, on the unwillingness of the Cambodian government to implement the recommendations

on corruption and electoral fraud that had been made by the United Nations in 2012, and

the fact that Sam Rainsy, the opposition leader in Cambodia, was not give a free right to

stand in that election.

What we saw, in that instance, was that the election quickly turned to civil unrest.

The worst example of that was a perfectly peaceful protest, regarding an industrial

relations issue in Cambodia, where union members were shot at and killed by police who were

acting under the instruction of the Cambodian Government.

After that, 20,000 people marched in protest against these actions, and they were met with

some very heavy-handed treatment.

We love democracy in this country, but we don't understand the fight that goes on in

countries in our region to have the most basic rights—rights that we take completely for

granted in this country.

The Cambodian people have had to put up with more than any people around the world should

ever have to deal with around the world.

The Khmer Rouge ruled that country in the most violent and oppressive way for a long time.

Australia was pivotal in trying to establish a free and fair democracy in that country.

We did so much to try and assist this happen, and one of my predecessors representing the

south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Gareth Evans, when he was Foreign Minister, was critical

in bringing about democratic rule in Cambodia.

People thought that the Cambodians wouldn't come out to vote because they would be so

scared—these were very reasonable fears—of violence.

But people who were there on the day of the first free democratic election in Cambodia

speak with such emotion about having gone to polling booths and having seen lines of

hundreds of people waiting for hours at a time for the opportunity to have their say.

That was a country on the rise.

What we are demanding is that Cambodia go back to the path towards democracy—a full

and fair democracy.

That is what I will continue to pressure the government to ask for and demand from the Cambodians.

90 Second Statement - Cambodia - Duration: 1:35.

Thank you Deputy Speaker and I rise today to express my anger at the ongoing human rights

abuses occurring in Cambodia and the unwillingness of the current Government to do or say anything

about this fast, escalating political crisis.

And I do so on behalf of thousands of Cambodian-Australians who I have the great privilege of representing

in this Chamber.

In May, I spoke about the anniversary of the murder of Dr. Kem Ley who was a leading light

for the democracy movement and the Cambodian Government's most ardent critic.

He was shot dead in broad daylight in the streets of Phnom Penh.

Since then, the situation has deteriorated further.

The Cambodian Opposition Leader, Ken Sokha has been arrested on treason charges.

The Cambodian Government is now attempting to dissolve the opposition party and this

week, passed a law to redistribute opposition seats back to the Government.

Extreme violence has been perpetrated to suppress free and fair elections, Members of Parliament

have been beaten and protesters have been shot dead.

How bad does this situation have to get before the Foreign Minister says something about it?

Australia has a special responsibility to the Cambodian people because of our unique

role in the Paris Peace Accords signed 26 years ago next week.

These flagrant and violent abuses of human rights are unacceptable to my Cambodian-Australian

constituents and they are unacceptable to me.

I ask the Australian Government take a stand on this issue.

We need to use our power in the region to properly represent my constituents and the

family and friends of those constituents who remain back home in Cambodia.

Thank you.

90 Second Statement - Manus Island - Duration: 1:30.

I call the Member for Hotham.

Deputy Speaker, like many millions of Australians, I have watched the deteriorating situation

on Manus and Nauru with shock.

I rise to make it absolutely clear that the government's actions do not represent my views

and wishes and they do not represent the views and wishes of many of the people I represent.

Under the Turnbull government, Manus and Nauru have become places of indefinite detention.

Refugees and asylum seekers have been held for over four years.

They have no idea what the future holds for them.

They have been held for too long, Deputy Speaker.

These people have been effectively imprisoned for longer than many people are held for serious crimes.

We've had four years of chaos, four years of secrecy and four years of failure by the

government to resolve this difficult problem.

Recently, Deputy Speaker, the government has seemed to want to argue that these people

have nothing to do with us.

How utterly ridiculous!

Whatever your view may be about refugees, Australia has a clear responsibility to these

people; whether it is moral or legal, in my view, is completely irrelevant.

The Prime Minister's and the Minister for Immigration inability to secure third-country

resettlement arrangements is another failure to add to this government's record.

It is so disappointing that, when an opportunity to help resolve this problem lands in the

government's lap, in the way of New Zealand's offer to resettle eligible refugees, the government

then rejects it.

I call on the Prime Minister and the Minister for Immigration to show some compassion and humanity.

Accept New Zealand's offer and make moves towards getting these people out of Manus and Nauru.

Marriage Equality Speech - House of Representatives - Duration: 2:35.

This is about our nation reaching out.

It's a nation making it clear that LGBTIQ people belong, and that's not a small thing.

It matters a great deal.

It matters a great deal in particular to young people.

Deputy Speaker, I know you'll be very well aware of the statistics.

We know that young people who are having questions about their sexuality are about five times

as likely to attempt suicide as other young Australians.

But Deputy Speaker, like most people, statistics tell you one part of the story but it's human

experience that fills in the gaps.

I have, of course—like almost everyone surely in this chamber, have gone through the experience

of watching my friends come out.

It's incredibly hard for them Deputy Speaker, it really is.

No-one in this country who is questioning their sexuality should feel they are any less

of a person, that they are less valued or that they are less respected.

Today we say that as a parliament.

That's why I say this is not a small change; it is a huge change, because this is our country

saying, 'We love you, we respect you and we want you to have the full rights and opportunities

that I get to enjoy'.

Deputy Speaker, like so much of what we do in politics, this debate has not been pretty.

Politics can be a very ugly business.

It's never as clean and clear and perfect as we want it to be.

A lot of people hate politics, and we know that a lot of people have diminishing faith

in its ability to make any changes.

But I want to say something to those people.

Just have a look at how our laws have changed and how our society has changed just in my

lifetime.

I'm 37 years old.

In the year I was born in Victoria, gay sex was a crime.

I was 17 by the time Tasmania decriminalised being gay.

When I joined the Labor Party, I was 16 years old.

Marriage equality was never going to happen.

It was not even part of the political discussion in any mainstream way, because it was unthinkable.

Here I stand before the parliament less than two decades later, and we're about to give

LGBTIQ Australians equal rights before the law.

Soon a gay wedding is going to be completely unremarkable.

Society can change.

It does change.

This has given me and so many other Australians hope.

Our political system isn't pretty, but what matters most is that it can be used to change

our society for the better, and I am so deeply privileged to be a part of that change today.

[music]
