Look how fluffy she is I swear she's getting fluffy all the time. Don't flick your
tail at me thank you very much. Hey guys it's Sarah-Jane welcome back to my
channel today I'm going to do my very first are these books worth the hype
video. So in this video I'm going to be discussing three recent releases and
letting you guys know whether I think these releases are worth the hype I'm
going to be discussing Zenith by Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings the
Cruel Prince by Holly Black and Everless by Sara Holland. I recently saw Joce
from squibblesreads do this and she reviewed the Cruel Prince and Zenith in
the same video and I thought this was actually a really great way of combining
them and putting them in the same video so I decided to do the same thing and
add Everless into the mix. So the first book that I'm going to be discussing is
Zenith by Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings. So I received an advance reader
copy of this book back in July 2017 I didn't get a chance to read it until
December and I'm gonna chat you guys about it. I think it's fair to say that a
lot of the hype for this book is because Sasha and Lindsay are already known to
us especially Sasha with such a large following so the question is is Zenith
worth the hype? so Zenith is a white a sci-fi novel
about a band of all-female space pirates who show the boys how it's done. this
band of all-female space pirates is led by fugitive AndI who is also known as
the Bloody Baroness. So our space captain Andi is a fugitive she's a mercenary
she's on the run and she's captured and the story starts when she's given the
opportunity to win her freedom back with one mission. If Andi and her crew can
rescue the son of the leader she's been on the run from she can earn back her
freedom. In order to rescue the captured son Valen she must team up with her
ex-lover Dex who she's also been on the run from. Now I were into Zenith feeling
pretty optimistic it wasn't because the book was written by Sasha and Lindsay it
was because I felt like the premise sounded really interesting to me but
unfortunately the book fell pretty flat. As a writer myself I know that there is
no such thing as a 100% original story it's completely ok that we're all
inspired by the books that we've read the media that we've consumed but for me
personally I just felt like Andi was essentially Celaena Sardothien from
Throne of Glass in space. Andi was a character that confused me
because she was the Bloody Baroness and when it suited the novel she was very
cutthroat she reveled in death she loved being the Bloody Baroness and then she
didn't she felt very conflicted by it she felt
very guilty she notched her kills on her swords and it just didn't really work
for me. for me I felt like Andi could have gone one of two ways she could have
been this killer who seemed like she reveled in death and actually it was a
mask and deep down she was really vulnerable and she didn't know how to
put that other side of herself across because she was known as this like
merciless killer or we could have had this killer who was very hardened who
was very tough who was this mercenary and then gradually throughout the course
of the book her veneer would slowly start to like fall away and we get to
see the real Andi underneath unfortunately we kind of got a mismatch
of the two and it didn't really work. And the same thing can really be said for
the other characters as well there were certain things that I liked but they
didn't make sense when you paired them with other things that have been said or
being done throughout the course of the book and I just felt like we got a lot
of different point of views. I understand why we have the different point of views
but sometimes you'd have a chapter and actually this is what Joss from squibblesreads
said where you'd have a chapter and then you'd have the same chapter
essentially from somebody else's point of view and it didn't really add anything
to the story and when she said that I was like yes 100% I agree because I felt
the same thing. Ultimately I think this book to me just didn't feel like it was
quite ready because you'd have like the odd bit that felt very polished and then
you'd have another bit that felt quite rushed and the two didn't really gel
together very well you had some very odd description some very clunky sentences
some great clunky paragraphs and the whole thing just felt underdeveloped. I
felt like we were told things more than we were actually shown them for me that
got quite repetitive I don't feel like this book built on any atmosphere I felt
like the descriptions were quite clunky and I just felt like I should really be
lost in this space world and ultimately I wasn't so I gave Zenith is 2 out of 5
stars and if you asked me if it was worth the hype I'm afraid I'm going to
have to say no. The next book I'm going to talk about is The Cruel Prince by Holly
Black. One terrible morning Jude and her sisters find themselves orphans when an
assassin turns up at their door and murders their parents and smuggles them
away into the realm of the fae. In the fairy courts Jude is mocked and
tormented for simply being human and she realizes if she ever hopes to survive
she has to be as cunning and as deceitful as the fae themselves.
So it goes about saying that the The Cruel Prince is a little bit more up my
street because it does involve the Fae and you guys know that I love the Fa.e I
am Fae trash and I wear that crown with pride. Now this story was very
interesting because I found myself really pulled into the realm of the Fae
and for me I often find that a lot of YA fiction that involves the Fae is a
little bit too sugar-sweet for my liking however in The Cruel Prince I got the
kind of fae I expected I got the deceitful I got the cunning I got the
devastatingly beautiful and sneaky and mysterious fae I've really really been
craving. Some of the book was written absolutely beautifully there were
certain parts of this story where I was pulled in so much and I felt like the
description that atmosphere made me feel like I was really there. Then there were
other parts of the Fae world and culture if you like that left me kind of going
huh? Now Fae is a subject and as a theme can be a little bit difficult to write
sometimes I think in comparison to perhaps vampires shifters demons that
sort of thing because the Fae are naturally mischievous they can be sprite
like and sometimes it can be hard to kind of find a Fae book that is the kind
of Fae that you like because actually Fae as a theme is very very broad. I
personally enjoyed this book I will say that I do prefer my fae a little bit
darker but because this is YA a it was exactly what I expected it to be and I
found the Fae to be very fae like you know there's some other books that I've
read where I haven't really felt like the characters are Fae. I read this book
quite quickly it really pulled me in and it did surprise me quite a few times I
didn't really know what was gonna happen I didn't see any of the plot twists
coming I didn't really know where this book was going to end up and it did end
on a cliffhanger but not the kind of cliffhanger where you're like oh my god
how could you do this to me it was a really good cliffhanger it made me want
the second book and if you ask me this book is worth the hype I'm going to say
yes. To me this book is worth the hype because I enjoyed it with that being
said I do feel like there is a chance that this book is going to end up being
eclipsed by the hype because the hype is so big I
feel like it could become one of these books where people might feel
underwhelmed because it's been bigged up so much. The final book I'm going to be
discussing is Everless by Sara Holland. in the land of Sempera the rich control
everything and time is their currency. This book had a very unique concept in
this world blood equals time and blood is extracted and bound to blood iron.
Essentially the rich are very frivolous with their blood iron and the poor
literally bleed themselves dry and the story starts when our protagonist Jules
goes to work at Everless because her father is literally running out of time.
Everless is a rich estate and they're looking for staff and Jules father
begs her not to go but she knows how they need the blood I and she knows he's
literally running out of time so she goes there and the story goes on from
there. Now I feel like out of all three of the books that I've discussed today
this one is probably the one that is the most unique in its concept it was the
concept that intrigued me the most. With that being said I was then let down by
other things for example I found the characters to be very one-dimensional I
didn't find the writing style to be anything special but the concept of this
book is very good. I don't feel like the characters are particularly memorable I
don't feel like they really lept off the page I feel like they were a little bit
one-dimensional I found the world-building and the lore to be okay I
wouldn't say it was really poor and it won't say it was amazing and I just
found that the overall writing style I guess was just okay. It wasn't terrible I
didnt find myself looking at lines and then being pulled out of the world because I
felt they were really poor I just felt like it was dare I say average and the
only thing for me personally that this book really had going for it was
actually the concept in itself. I do feel that this book is still a welcome
addition to YA though simply because it is unique in its concept and I did
find the concept very enjoyable and I think when you go into a book shop and
you see all these books that have the same themes it was really nice to read a
book that was exploring different themes and I did enjoy the parallels of the
world of Sempera with our own society. There's a scene which doesn't have
anything to do with like the main story but you see this couple drawing time to
put aside for their children and I just felt like that was a really sad part of
the novel and it was so simple and I just felt that was really well done but
on the whole I just don't find the characters memorable and I
don't find the writing style anything special. Now in terms of rating I gave
Everless three out of five stars so is it worth the hype? This is really
difficult because actually I can't say if it's worth the hype and that was
pretty much the point of this video I think I'm going to have to unfortunately
say no. I don't feel like this book is bad I certainly wouldn't say oh my god
don't read Everless it's rubbish it's not I just don't feel that the book itself
lives up to its concept. So that's it for this video for you personally were these
books worth the hype let me know in the comments down below because I'd love to
know your opinions these are books that I've been hearing a lot of talk about
and I'm interested to know what you guys thought of them. Thank you so much for
watching this video if you did enjoy it please consider giving it a thumbs up
and subscribing to my channel I will see you guys again soon goodbye!
