We currently as of tonight have 419 signatures.
Which is very exciting, yes.
That means that there are over 400 Dubuquers who are demanding fast reliable community
owned internet in Dubuque.
Right, 400 people who aren't satisfied with ISPs who only care about their own bottom line.
That's 400 people or more that want access for all the children of Dubuque to be able
to their homework when they need to.
400 people who want to support home-based businesses to be able to effectively compete
in the marketplace.
Over 400 people who really, really, really want to make sure that at each and every home
people have access to fast, affordable, high quality, reliable internet for all sorts of
reasons and not the least of which is that we ensure that we have open and accessible
and equal internet.
Since we have 400 signatures, we made a date for the public forum that will be
February 20th at 6:00pm at Aigler Auditorium in the library.
One of the things that we want to talk about is how each of you can be involved in planning
that and making that a success.
We have a few people lined up to speak, but we would love to have more.
First, Curtis Dean, who is the owner and operator of Smart Source Consulting, he's been working
for over a decade in the telecom and specifically community broadband industry and is incredibly
knowledgeable of ways to implement community broadband effectively.
We also have Dave Schilling, who is from Cedar Falls utility.
Cedar Falls is slightly smaller than us but fairly comparable in terms of size and they
have run a very successful municipal utility for years and just right after the FCC made
the decision about net neutrality - they came out saying that they will always have net
neutrality and that's the kind of internet that we want for Dubuque.
There are a few other people as well, but we need more ideas and like I said more specifically
how you'd like to be involved.
There are all sorts of things that we need, right, like we need social media people, we
need advertising, we need to most importantly outreach to other folks, right, so we set
400 as our first goal, but 700 is our next goal; and that will need all of us and even
more people to be involved.
But, I definitely think that this is a very achievable goal, and when we come to the city
council with 700 signatures and we tell them, look 700 of your citizens want municipal internet,
they need to listen because that will sway an election.
So we need to hold them accountable to what we want.
