Hello I'm Richard Vobes, the Bald Explorer, out on another walk. Today
I'm in Wisborough Green. Wisborough Green is a delightful village in West Sussex.
It lies between Billingshurst and Petworth just off the A27 - which is just this road at the
bottom here. I'm not so much interested in that, but I am interested in the
village which I have driven past many many times on my way
east and west in West Sussex and I've passed the
village and I've never ever stopped. That of course is incredibly remiss of
me, so today I'm going to visit it. It is a bit of a an exploration really because
not having been here before I'm curious at what I can find. The
church is something that's always impressed me because as you drive through the
village you wind past it, up on its little hill. You can see the
amazing spire which I think has shingle tiles on and a gold weather vane,
at the top. It's immaculately looked after, and
built from bright sandstone. I'm assuming it's local. There are little
Lancet arches at the top, just beneath the Horsham slab, the tiling on
the roof. Beautiful old doors and a clock in the tower
A very substantial looking Church and I believe it's been here
since the 12th century. As we make our way up on to the hill we have a great
view of the village and what's in store for us.
Here pass these tombstones of a lovely quaint door and
round to the front where some vans I think they're doing a bit of work.
Let's have a look at the doorway the entrance because that has certain
significance. It is a pretty tall door and I believe it's tall enough for a
man on a horse to enter. It has them some significance because
the church doors were presented by the Home Guard just
after the war as a memorial
for the raid on Dieppe in 1942, August 1942. A lot of
people lost their lives. The raid was planned in this village.
Anyway we'll leave the church behind and carry on with our
exploration and we'll head west. Down here, past this beautiful building.
I understand there's a pond here.
I've only glimpsed the pond in passing.
Lovely pollard trees around the side.
It's about three degrees as I record this and there are
bits of ice on the top of the pond. In the middle a little duck house which is very
quaint.
Let's carry on through leaving the pond behind us and come up to the Three
Crowns pub which i think is very popular.
There are loads of public footpath walks locally.
You can't mistake the green public footpath signs at the edges of roadsides.
They always looking inviting.
We pass the Three Crowns pub which I imagine back in the day was probably a
coaching inn. Here is the village sign.
Let's go over to the village green. It's a large one.
The village green is used for cricket and football.
They have a balloon festival here too.
I am sure you get fabulous balloon rides
and views all over the West Sussex area, particularly looking down on
Billingshurst and Petworth.
In the distance are some traditional Sussex houses
with hung tiles. Always impressive.
I see that there is another pub.
You can sit outside and enjoy the sunshine. It appears that most of the
village is south-facing, a sensible thing if you want
to sit outside and enjoy the sun.
The Cricketers Arms is what I'm coming up to.
Some very impressive buildings here.
I shall cross the road towards a fingerpost pointout local villages.
A horse chestnut tree
On to the cricket pavilion
It is wonderful village. I don't know why I've never stopped before.
Beautiful brickwork.
Lovely coloured brickwork, lovely windows too.
More pretty cottages.
Hello. What's your name?
Pickle.
I've lived here for 89 years.
Golly. You must have seen some changes?
Yes.
All the shops have gone.
Is the blacksmith still in operation? No not any more.
Lovely to meet you. Enjoy taking Pickle for a walk.
That's the highlight for me meeting a person who has lived here all his life.
Nice petrol pump.
Thanks for watching.
See you next time.
well
you
