ESP32 E-Paper Thermometer with a DS18B20 Sensor - Low Power - Duration: 6:01.
Dear friends welcome to another project video!
Today, we are going to use this small e-paper display with the ESP32 board and build a simple
thermometer!
It is a very easy project to build.
It won't take us more than 5 minutes so let's get started!

Let's see what we are going to build today.
As you can see, I have connected a small e-paper screen to an ESP32 board.
At the screen, we display the temperature which is being measured by this temperature
sensor the DS18B20.
The temperature reading on the screen is updated every 5 seconds.
The cool thing is that we don't refresh the whole screen which is very slow, only
part of the screen which is fast and low-power!
Great, the project is working fine but let's now see how to build it!
The parts needed are the following: • An ESP32 Board
• A 1.5 Inch E-Paper Display • A DS18B20 Sensor
• A breadboard • Some wires
The total cost of the project is around 30$.
You can find links to all the parts I use in the description of the video below.
Let's now connect them together.
A few days ago we took a first look at this small e-paper display, and we built a small
project with it using an Arduino Uno board.
Unfortunately, the libraries for the screen require a lot of RAM memory.
The Arduino Uno offers a limited amount of memory just 2KBs so we can't build big projects
with it using this e-paper display.
So we are going to use something more powerful.
Actually let's use the most powerful board we have, the ESP32.
As you can see, the ESP32 compared to an Arduino Uno is a beast!
It offers two 32bit cores which operate at 160Mhz, 520KBs of RAM memory, WiFi, Bluetooth,
many analog and digital pins at a price of just $7!
I prepared a detailed review of the ESP32 a few months ago; you can watch it by clicking
on the card here.
One of the most exciting things about the ESP32 is that even though it is so powerful,
it offers a deep-sleep mode which requires only 10μΑs of current.
This make the ESP32 the ideal chip for low power applications.
The E-Paper screen uses the SPI interface to communicate with the ESP32 board so we
must connect it to the hardware SPI pins of the ESP32 board we use.
It took me some time to find out which pins are the SPI pins on this board searching online.
After I discovered them, I designed this, to save you some of your precious time.
You can find the pinout diagram of this ESP32 board in the description below.
Now that we know the pins we need all we have to do is to connect the display and the sensor
to the ESP32 according to this schematic diagram.
Luckily all the SPI pin are placed on the same side of this ESP32 board so we can use
a breadboard to test our project.
After connecting all the parts together all we have to do is to power up the project.
At first, the project displays a splash screen for 3 seconds and then it shows the temperature
icon.
A few moments later the temperature reading appears.
The temperature reading is updated once every 5 seconds.
I have also prepared a version of the code with the temperature displayed in degrees
Fahrenheit for the friends of the channel living in the United States.
The code of the project is relatively simple.
We use the great GxEPD library to drive the display and a library for the temperature
sensor.
At first we display the splash screen which is a bitmap file designed in Photoshop.
Then we display another bitmap which is the main GUI of the project.
The Wiki of the screen has detailed instructions on how to load bitmap graphics on this screen.
In the loop function we read the temperature every five seconds and we print the temperature
we read on the display.
We don't refresh the whole display because it takes a lot of time, only the temperature
part using the partial screen update function.

The project works fine, and it looks great.
The e-paper display is ideal for a project like this because it offers great readability
and extremely low-power consumption.
When the screen is not updating it needs only 0.02mAs of current!
The ESP32 board needs around 60mA of current when operating.
In the next video, I will try to reduce the power consumption of the project.
The goal is to make this project able to run on batteries for months.
To achieve that I am going to learn how to put the ESP32 to sleep to conserve power and
I am going to use another ESP32 board, the Firebeetle ESP32 by DFrobot.
The creators of the board claim that this board requires only 12μΑ of current in sleep
mode.
So, in theory, the DFrobot Firebeetle board with an E-Paper display will need only 0.03mA
in sleep mode!
This means that we can easily make this project last on batteries for over a year!
I can't wait to try it and share my results with you.

Today I would like to show you a recipe for which I needed very many experiments:
the bread
I already made a bread with gluten that satisfied me
and when we found out that at home we have to cook gluten-free
we got a little scared because we could not make gluten-free bread
we thought we should buy the planetary mixer
or who knows what other, because in the videos we saw they very often used the planetary.
So after so much experimentation I would like to show you how I prepare gluten-free bread.
First of all, here there is the yeast with a little sugar
I let it rest for over an hour
because you have to wait for yeast to form a kind of froth over the water
then depends on the seasons now we are in winter, then
I had to let it rest a lot
in summer you let it rest a little less
and it makes that sort of froth sooner
so that the yeasts multiply
and therefore it is not necessary to add too much yeast.
Now, for a kilo of gluten-free mix I put 28 grams of yeast
because there is a 42 gram cube and I use it for a kilo and a half
you see that I put the water slowly because if you immediately put all the water
let's say that it breaks the banks and ends up all on your feet, practically
so you must to add it slowly and knead it before add again water
up to consume all the water
for a kilo of mix I put more or less
how much is needed for the dough with gluten
that is 650 millilitres, more or less
a little less than 630 millilitres
then it depends a lot on the flour or the mix
because if the flour or mix is more damp
if it has absorbed more water during processing or during storage
obviously it will need less to put in the dough
and it changes a lot so it's better to put little
now, for example, I put half a liter
and I also prepared a glass
with 150 millilitres to add later
here, it begins get a little thick
now you can also add all the water, I think
it's been a while since I started using this method
with this method I always used to make the dough with gluten
this is not a recipe for vegans
rather
not at all, because later we will add lard
and on the loafs we will add some milk to give them a little colour
because they remain really white if you do not add something to give them colour

but it's a shame to break an egg just to colour the loafs
so i think that milk is a good alternative

I use an electric oven
so I can set it at a low temperature

and then I let it rise in the warm oven
then at half leavening I remove it from the oven
I damp again the surface of the loafs with milk
and I turn on at full temperature to heat the oven before baking
the temperature I use for the oven is 225 degrees Celsius
and bake it for 20 minutes
I tell you all these things but I do not tell you, of course, as always
I do not tell you what mix I use
everybody always says the type of mix they use but I do not like advertising
I tell you how I always say
try all the flours you find... Now let's add
salt
That I had not yet add: seven grams of salt
and 60 g of lard
if you do not want to use lard you can put olive oil

now I'm thinking if it will take some more water
because I already put 650 millilitres
but I see that there is still so much flour

so I'd better put more water.

ESP32 E-Paper Thermometer with a DS18B20 Sensor - Low Power - Duration: 6:01.Dear friends welcome to another project video!
Today, we are going to use this small e-paper display with the ESP32 board and build a simple
thermometer!
It is a very easy project to build.
It won't take us more than 5 minutes so let's get started!
Hello, guys, I am Nick and welcome to educ8s.tv a channel that is all about DIY electronics
projects.

Let's see what we are going to build today.
As you can see, I have connected a small e-paper screen to an ESP32 board.
At the screen, we display the temperature which is being measured by this temperature
sensor the DS18B20.
The temperature reading on the screen is updated every 5 seconds.
The cool thing is that we don't refresh the whole screen which is very slow, only
part of the screen which is fast and low-power!
Great, the project is working fine but let's now see how to build it!
The parts needed are the following: • An ESP32 Board
• A 1.5 Inch E-Paper Display • A DS18B20 Sensor
• A breadboard • Some wires
The total cost of the project is around 30$.
You can find links to all the parts I use in the description of the video below.
Let's now connect them together.
A few days ago we took a first look at this small e-paper display, and we built a small
project with it using an Arduino Uno board.
Unfortunately, the libraries for the screen require a lot of RAM memory.
The Arduino Uno offers a limited amount of memory just 2KBs so we can't build big projects
with it using this e-paper display.
So we are going to use something more powerful.
Actually let's use the most powerful board we have, the ESP32.
As you can see, the ESP32 compared to an Arduino Uno is a beast!
It offers two 32bit cores which operate at 160Mhz, 520KBs of RAM memory, WiFi, Bluetooth,
many analog and digital pins at a price of just $7!
I prepared a detailed review of the ESP32 a few months ago; you can watch it by clicking
on the card here.
One of the most exciting things about the ESP32 is that even though it is so powerful,
it offers a deep-sleep mode which requires only 10μΑs of current.
This make the ESP32 the ideal chip for low power applications.
The E-Paper screen uses the SPI interface to communicate with the ESP32 board so we
must connect it to the hardware SPI pins of the ESP32 board we use.
It took me some time to find out which pins are the SPI pins on this board searching online.
After I discovered them, I designed this, to save you some of your precious time.
You can find the pinout diagram of this ESP32 board in the description below.
Now that we know the pins we need all we have to do is to connect the display and the sensor
to the ESP32 according to this schematic diagram.
Luckily all the SPI pin are placed on the same side of this ESP32 board so we can use
a breadboard to test our project.
After connecting all the parts together all we have to do is to power up the project.
At first, the project displays a splash screen for 3 seconds and then it shows the temperature
icon.
A few moments later the temperature reading appears.
The temperature reading is updated once every 5 seconds.
I have also prepared a version of the code with the temperature displayed in degrees
Fahrenheit for the friends of the channel living in the United States.
The code of the project is relatively simple.
We use the great GxEPD library to drive the display and a library for the temperature
sensor.
At first we display the splash screen which is a bitmap file designed in Photoshop.
Then we display another bitmap which is the main GUI of the project.
The Wiki of the screen has detailed instructions on how to load bitmap graphics on this screen.
In the loop function we read the temperature every five seconds and we print the temperature
we read on the display.
We don't refresh the whole display because it takes a lot of time, only the temperature
part using the partial screen update function.

The project works fine, and it looks great.
The e-paper display is ideal for a project like this because it offers great readability
and extremely low-power consumption.
When the screen is not updating it needs only 0.02mAs of current!
The ESP32 board needs around 60mA of current when operating.
In the next video, I will try to reduce the power consumption of the project.
The goal is to make this project able to run on batteries for months.
To achieve that I am going to learn how to put the ESP32 to sleep to conserve power and
I am going to use another ESP32 board, the Firebeetle ESP32 by DFrobot.
The creators of the board claim that this board requires only 12μΑ of current in sleep
mode.
So, in theory, the DFrobot Firebeetle board with an E-Paper display will need only 0.03mA
in sleep mode!
This means that we can easily make this project last on batteries for over a year!
I can't wait to try it and share my results with you.

ready red at level 4 autonomous ready but it's not been released yet on the
car software updates not going out and level 4 will be more autonomous but it
isn't fully autonomous we are not near fully autonomous but it does bring the
question to when we get to this fully autonomous car will we be able to just
jump in the car after we've had a couple of drinks from the pub get the car
to drive your home and I think yes we will we will get to that point but but
and here's the big but how do you know if the car is on fully autonomous or
the guy who's driving home drunk and the question is you probably won't
so they're gonna have to put a couple of things in these self-driving cars if you
do want to drive in the future drunk and I think what's going to happen is
they're gonna have to have the wheel disappear so you haven't got any control
of the car because if the wheels in front of you and you can touch it and
grab it you can you're in control of the car so you can not drive that car or you
must not have to sit in the driver's seat in which case you've now got four
seats instead of five seats available but it's more like they're gonna make
the steering will disappear in the pedals or disappear so if a police
officer drives past you there'll be no steering wheel there so he knows that
you're not driving the car it's fully autonomous and if you need to pull you
up I suppose there'll be data logs in the car to prove that you weren't
driving it but it's going to call a whole host of problems the police the
main problem is how do you pull up a fully autonomous car if you're a police
officer and you want to pull that car up to do a check on the passengers or the
wheels and stuff like that that will the car know to pull over when it sees
sirens how will it determine fake sound fake police you know obviously that
there is some in certain countries people have fake police cars and in
touristy areas and they try and pull scam so will it be able to tell
the difference will the police given be given some sort of direct code into the
cars autonomous system to instruct it to pull over don't know but if they do if
the question if you get your car stolen cuz technically you'd be able to tell
the autonomous car to drive home or drive to the nearest police station so that
would be easy arrest for the police the next piece of news I was sent in from
one of my subscribers Dean he sent me a little news article snippet from BBC and
various of the new sources have covered this and it's basically about the tesla
semi truck and in it it says that the Tessa semi truck and 500-mile model
will cost an extortion stupid amount of money and it's not practical
and they'll never build it for this cost and Blah blah they sample
this information from a university a university that have never written a
good article about Tesla but they are an engineering university which have
special is especially specialities in battery technology
however they always seem to write negative articles about Tesla etc and
the other thing is they're saying that the battery cost won't be able to
produce for the price point Tesla have said but at the same time are they
talking about today's battery price or what Tesla are betting on which is the
predicted battery cost for them per kilowatt in the town the truck gets
released which is two years three years from now let's be honest test so we're
gonna have a delay on it it'll be four maybe five years before they get to that
point so if you take a bet on what the kilowatt price will be to produce a
battery cell in three four years tesla will probably bang on the money and they
that's what they're betting on but when these universities and news articles
they twist it and they're basically looking at the kilowatt kilowatt price
today to produce those batteries to get those miles on the Tesla semi truck and
that is wrong because Tesla know Tesla built of mega factory they built the
biggest biggest battery farm but biggest battery factory ever so if someone knows
what the price of a kilowatt battery will cost Tesla do and Tesla have 100%
control over how many batteries they can produce from that factory the only thing
they don't have control of is how much lithium's minded however I imagine that
pretty much every single mining company will be mining and finding lithium
sources now because it's the new gold rush new market that everyone wants
everyone wants lithium and there is plenty of lithium it's the fourth most
abundant element in the universe it's in why I don't know it's in salt brine and
so I believe it's in seawater it's a byproduct of oil so the oil companies
will be happy I know what Tesla have done they're betting on what they know
the price will cost in that point of time and Rightly so they also could bet
what the price of per kilowatt electricity would cost them because
they're going to build solar farms which are going to be powering those mega
charges for the trucks so that's how they can make certain bets
because they know what it cost to make the solar panels they know what it cost
it the battery storage for the solar panels and they know what it costs to
produce battery cells so Tesla have got all these things down because they
own their own facilities to make solar cells the own abilities to make the
batteries and obviously their own factories that which will be making the
trucks and cars etc I'm assuming that they've employed a lot of people from
the truck trucking background so they've got other expertise all in there now
Tessa I'm not gonna make an announcement they're going to build the truck for a
certain price and then hike up twice the cost this this article was saying that
the truck is going to cost in the battery sells more than what tesla is
selling the entire truck for so why would Tesla do that they're not they're
predicting the future the other thing this article said is it said the battery
cost possible the actual battery pack cost got it there cost two hundred
thousand pound which is way more than one hundred and thirty thousand pound
truck well it didn't mention is that one hundred and thirty thousand pound truck
doesn't come with all the optional extras that the tesla the truck include
and when I say optional extras there is bits that have to be fitted to trucks
that truck drivers need taco meters various security systems blah de blah
there's loads of extra hardware that needs to be fitted onto a truck the Tesla
the truck comes with all the software integrated so if you take 130 grand
truck and add on all the extras that the average shipping or tricking shipping
company would cost it's probably around about the same cost as what the tesla the
truck comes in completed yes there's going to be a couple of trucking
companies that will just buy a completely standard truck and just put a
cheap taco meter in and that is it but the majority of large shipping companies
large large haulage company sorry we'll be buying all this additional equipment
on top and tesla are providing all that as well
the other thing tests were promising is a million-mile you know warranty no
break down the truck won't stop the windscreen when you weigh all these
costs up for a massive haulage company they will make that saving back add the
diesel cost to the kilowatt charge cost and you're saving more time again you
then save the refuelling time it takes for a truck when a truck refuel it takes
a long time when a tesla truck gets refuelled recharged it's done at the
location of the shipping or during his taco break so he just plugs it in has
his break has his lunch when he has to fuel the car up he has to sit there hold
the nozzle in can't eat his lunch can't stop can't break he's still working he's
still doing someone who's not resting so when you weigh all these cost savings
uptime per driver destination stuff like that
the Tesla truck will still be cheaper even if it's more expensive however
they're guessing what the price the tesla truck is going to be no one
