They cut to the chase. Brazilians are not used to that.
Brazilians say French people are grouchy and not friendly.
Did you know I'm actually French?
Another rumor is that French people don't like Americans.
-So, when you speak English... -They don't like you.
You have to start the conversation in French.
-Approach them in French. -Right! Right!
I can't speak French but I'll say to anyone...
-Bonjour. -Bonjour.
Je suis brésilien. Je ne parle pas français.
Well done!
-Done! -It's the opposite with me.
I'm terrible but I love to try and speak French.
I always try to practice my French
but, if they know it, they speak English to me.
-They're not patient. -I must awful!
They have zero patience for my terrible French.
But saying you're from Brazil is a good strategy.
People usually smile when you say you're Brazilian.
-It's a good opening. -You say you don't know French.
They appreciate a Brazilian trying.
They feel sorry for us,
coming from a country that was discovered in the 16th century.
-They're so young! -Babies!
I believe it depends on how you approach them.
François can correct me.
I was going to France, checking the flight status, when someone said,
"When is the next flight?"
I said, "What?"
If in France, you should say,
"Excuse me. Can you tell me when the next flight is?"
Of course!
That changes everything.
If you start off by being polite, you open a communication channel.
They appreciate politeness.
It's now like when we ask for information.
They think, "You're new here. That's not how things work."
I believe you're right.
-Everything starts with "bonjour". -It's crucial! It can open doors.
It does open doors. That way, you're being respectful.
You're a visitor, you know?
You're talking to a resident and you should respect that.
-Are you from France? -I am.
Whenever you talk to a French, say, "Bonjour."
-That opens doors. -It does open doors.
But, in general, we like Brazilians in France.
I promise.
We, French, love Brazilians.

THE FRENCH STINK
Talking about myths and truths about French people,
people say French don't like to shower,
thus invented the perfume.
-Perfume! -That's that myth.
Do we smell?
Didn't you know about your reputation?

-I did, I did. -Brazilians just shower more.
French are the ones that least buy soap.
-That's disgusting! -I mean, worldwide.
French also don't use deodorant.
They prefer body wash.
So, they shower and that's it.
I have no doubts. France's subway smells!
-It does! -It drives me crazy!
Take it at the end of the day.
-During summer... -With a baguette under your arm.
That's why everyone loves the baguette!
-It's a cured bread. -Gorgonzola-infused baguette.
I don't understand
how they can put the baguette under their arm if they smell!
HOW FANCY!
Paris.
Let's start with Paris, the world's most visited city.
That's insane! People really go there a lot.
When you're traveling...
If you post on a social media saying
you're going to Mexico City or NYC, people don't seem to care,
but if you're going to Paris everyone thinks it's fancy.
You can't go to Paris and not have people saying
how fancy it is.
It's just a city. But it does have a magic.
There's something about it.
The first time I went, I was with my family.
I believe I was a teenager.
I remember how impressed I was.
I said, "This is the best place on Earth,"
What a wonderful place to be!
You just need to walk and appreciate everything.
It was my first time at a place I didn't know the language
and it was a place in which I was...
-It's gorgeous! -It is gorgeous!
It's a museum...
-A living museum. -Exactly! It's impressive.
You turn around the corner and you see
a sign saying someone important lived there, like a painter.
You get amazed at every step you take.
It's a well-preserved city for centuries.
The city is a perfect line.
You see the Louvre, the Champs-Élysées,
the Arc de Triomphe, La Défense, and Neuilly at the end.
-Yeah... -The city is all aligned.
The architecture...
The Eiffel Tower is aligned with The Tocadéro.
You can see the entire city with the tower on the back.
It's a really well-thought city for centuries.
Even the most basic touristic destinations...
Let's take the Eiffel Tower.
-How do you pronounce it? -Tour Eiffel.
-Tour Eiffel. -Good!
-I said Tour Eiffel right! -Tour Eiffel.
Anyway, you must go!
You can just say it's too touristy and not go.
-You have to go at least one. -You have to!
It's really impressive!
It's big! It's beautiful! It's nice from the bottom!
-You go up and check the view. -You get goosebumps.
There's no bathroom up there. It's worth mentioning.
Go pee before you go.
DO NOT VISIT IN AUGUST
Paris in August is the worst thing ever.
-Is it? -It really it.
-So crowded! -Don't fall into that trap!
I didn't have money and I was staying with my mom's friend
and I had to get the keys.
Se didn't have A/C and it was so hot!
My idea, after I lot the tournament,
was to find a place with A/C.
I'd go to the movies.
I'd spend the day inside the Louvre
-You were not there for the art. -No! I wanted to enjoy the A/C!
I would go to the movies not knowing what I was watching.
I didn't care.
I just sat down hoping I could get out of Paris soon.
-So, don't go in August. -Nope!
They have movie marathons
During the summer,
they have three-days movie marathons.
Some people do go because of the A/C.
Don't get me wrong, I love Paris. It's amazing!
I just don't like it during summer.
I had a stop, then I lost my flight and slept there.
-I was with my two kids. -It went all wrong.
It was August and my kids were in the water fountain.
Oh God!
When I saw it, one of them was in his underwear.
On the fountain in his underwear. I was so jealous!
You should've done that!
I couldn't believe I was there with them.
So terrible!
-So, to me... -That's how you spot a Brazilian.
Naked people on the water fountain must be from Brazil.
Terrible!
I was in the Lovre and I saw
Venus, in all her beauty, so pretty and nice...
Then I saw people putting a coin in Venus' buttcrack.
I'm not kidding! And taking pictures too!
I knew they were from Brazil and then I heard,
"Renata, take my picture", in Portuguese.
I knew I was right.
THE MOST IMPRESSIVE THING ABOUT PARIS
I left the Bateaux Mouches tour for the end of the trip.
It's the boat that goes along the Seine.
You need to know the right time to go and buy your ticket.
I went with a friend and we took the boat late afternoon.
On the way back, close to the Eiffel Tower,
it lit up.
You have to know when to go. They have it once a day.
They do it on purpose.
They make it in a way that you get close to the tower
to see it lighting up.
It was a real highlight. It touched me.
I took the boat on New Year's Eve at midnight.
I've always liked to just walk around
and finding my way through the streets.
I don't have one favorite thing.
I've always liked the experience.
I love looking at the buildings.
I had one bad realization when I went to the Moulin Rouge.
Yeah, it's all lit up at night with the mill and all.
But I found the show to be very unamusing.
-So silly! -Really?
It's nothing.
Any Brazilian carnival beats that.
Those naked French woman tried to make something nice.
-Disappointing. -So disappointing.
Go to Moulin Rouge, take a picture and that's it.
The show... It is so disappointing!
You have buses filled with Japanese people
in line to take a picture.
-But it's not... -It's very lame.
Unnecessary!
TIPS
You have to go to Mouffetard St. in Paris.
It's in the Latin Quarter and it crosses that entire area.
It's a medieval street filled with cheesemakers and restaurants.
There's a beautiful square at the end. I recommend it.
One thing I really like doing in Paris
is to watch the sunset and the lights going on
from the Sacré-Coeur stairs.
I used to get that Greek gyro sandwich and some wine,
and go to the stairwell to watch the sunset
and the city lights going on.
It's the most beautiful thing!
You see, little by little, the city gaining life.
It is after all the City of Lights.
Their lighting really is stunning!
Sacre-Coeur is a little distant.
It lies on top of the only hill in Paris.
-Paris is all flat. -With Sacré Creour on a hill.
Sacré Creour is in Monmartre, which is a neighborhood.
From this mount, you have this view.
-It's the only one. -Amazing restaurants...
I had a fondue there. Oh my God!
I couldn't believe the food I was eating there.
I ate a foundue that was so good!
Then the server came and offered me a raclette,
that melted cheese plate.
I said yes and she brought me
a a cheese this big, Rosana.
There was a heater on top of the cheese
and the cheese melts on top of itself.
-On top of itself! -It's a cheese cascade.
I almost opened my mouth to let it all in.
What a delicious thing! Cheesy cheese!
Sacré-Coeur has something special because you see, I'm atheist,
I don't really care about churches.
I usually like the architecture, though.
But it was never my thing.
Anyway, I was on the stairwell and I heard a singing...
They were performing a mass in which the nuns were singing.
The accoustics of the church
gave me all the goosebumps.
It brought me down in tears.
That reminded me of a Christmas I spent in Paris.
I'm also not a religious person.
I went out for Christmas Eve dinner.
On the way to the hotel, I saw, in Notre-Dame, a crowd.
A crowd on the cathedral at midnight.
I didn't quite get it.
I didn't realize it was Misa de Gallo.
There was a line to get in the church,
so I went in line, like a good Brazilian.
We waited in line until it was our turn.
In there, I saw the choir and a packed church.
So, these little moments are actually very beautiful.
TIPS
There's a restaurant called Resistance
close to République.
They are a 100% organic restaurant.
The owners drive to find
the best products and the best growers in France.
They elaborate the menu with what they have.
Chef Clemant created menus on the fly
according to the customer.
VERSAILLES IS AROUND THE CORNER
-You have to go to Versailles. -Versailles...
It's a few miles from Paris, but how far is it really?
-It's like half an hour. -It's a 30-min train from Paris.
Palace of Versailles is a huge palace.
-The gardens are stunning! -Stunning!
The Hall of Mirrors...
However, I went in August, when it's that hot.
August is a month... Here is our warning alert.
-We ask you, please! -Do not go in August!
On a hot day of summer,
having to walk that much in Versailles,
is not pleasant at all.
I didn't feel good because of all the heat.
If you're going to walk a lot outside,
go when the weather is better.
-The garden is huge! -Pretty huge!
I recommend you to look it up upfront
because I was able to see the Bolshoi Ballet
in Versailles.
So, it was nice because I was so lucky!
If you do your research...
Check what's going on there during your time in France.
-You can get the best exhibitions. -Exhibitions!
They have classical music concerts.
-With that... -Water fountain.
Fantastic.
-It's truly beautiful! -It is indeed.
And you're gonna waste at least half a day in Versailles.
If you don't have much time,
go in the morning and come back to Paris after lunch.
FRANCE OTHER THAN PARIS
I rented a car in France and I'm glad I did it.
It was nice, the roads are great,
but you do need a GPS.
That was before Waze, so now it's even easier.
I rented a car at Paris' airport
and drove to Loire Valley.
I visited Loire Vally by car.
-Did you do the same? -Yes. It's amazing!
So, Loire Valley is where all the castles are.
-Tintin's castle is there. -Right!
It's so amazing even if you go during winter, like I did.
It's not all that pretty because the trees are all leafless.
-My mom went during spring... -Like I did.
-Chenonceau, to me... -Chenonceau...
It's so pretty!
I could not believe it was real because it's so beautiful!
The entrance is already stunning. All those trees.
It's an avenue surrounded by all those trees
that take you to the castle.
Amazing! You can visit the kitchen and see how it used to worl.
The pots and everything.
-It's so big! -Gigantic!
And you see that grid-garden in all that symethry!
TIPS
One thing I really recommend is a place to see the exhibitions
in the South of France.
It's called Les Baux-de-Provence.
It's a cave chain
where they have exhibitions inside the caves.
You see paintings and art with background music.
It's something out of this world!
WHITE WINE BY THE BEACH
We haven't talked about the French beaches yet.
-I've never been. -Me neither.
I have. Even more than I've been no non-beachy cities.
Like where?
The first one was Sain-Quay-Portrieux.
I believe that's how you say it.
It's an awesome little town.
I played a sub-21 tournament there, my first World.
-You play beach volleyball. -Exactly.
I remember it's a city for old people.
The entire population is old.
The young people sprint to college.
The fans in attendance were all old people.
I also played in Marseille, which is beautiful.
That's my favorite.
The beaches in Biarritz are so, so pretty!
-The ocean... -Is it very blue?
The water is different. There's something about it.
It's hard to awe us, Brazilians.
I'm very bias
because I believe Rio de Janeiro is so beautiful,
so I find it hard for a beach to chock me.
-Brazil's Northeast has great ones. -Our beaches are beautiful.
So yes, it is incredible but it's not about the water.
It's the experience.
It's different from what we're used to.
You're drinking wine, you're seeing a different architecture.
You're at the beach with the mountains right there.
That was the best part about it.
After surfing and having lunch, I'd go to the mountains.
All on the same day.
You cross a little road and get to a different region.
-That's a good point. -Mountains and beaches.
It's a great region.
It's interesting about the wine because we have beer here.
-There you have white wine. -White wine!
Much better!
I went to Dijon and I loved it there.
I was frustrated when I found out
all Dijon mustards are made in Canada now.
Oh, damn it!
"Isn't this place called Dijon?"
But there was a guy that still makes it.
-They still have it. -There're a few local ones.
But they're mostly imported now.
You can go on the Owl's Trail.
It's so interesting! Every city should have it.
It's like a 2-hour tour
in which you follow little metal owls on the ground
and they guide you through the city.
So, you're following it, and bam! A cathedral.
You keep following and bam! A museum.
And you keep following it.
-So, it's very easy... -It's like a life-sized board game.
-You throw the dice... -You can find a map anywhere.
And you follow it.
I love Dijon. There's a nice feeling to the place.
So, both in Rams and...
-Is that how you say it? -It's Reims.
-Reims! -Reims!
Is it German?
You have all the wineries in Dijon too.
In Reims, you have...
You have all the sparkling wineries, including Champagne.
-Champagne. -Hence the beverage's name.
It's not a sparkling wine, it's Champagne.
Champagne is only from Champagne. Everything else is sparkling wine.
I was able to go to Moët & Chandon.
It's not how we pronounce it here, Moe...
-It's Moët, right? -You don't pronounce the T.
The woman there said it with the T.
-Moët is... -I corrected people.
She said it and I took it to heart.
You can go and see how it's made.

Veive Clicquot is the busiest one. You have to book it in advance.
Reims has the cathedrals where they'd crown the kings.

The cathedral closes at night
but they have a light show at night.
They have some holograms.
For half an hour, you watch a hologram of people working
and the cathedral changing colors...
Everyone gathers there to watch how it came to be.
Afterwards, you go to a restaurant and this and that.
I drove to these two places
and I could see the wineries and the Maisons...

Anyway, I loved getting to know these little French cities.
Every place has a beautiful cathedral and castle
and they're known for some food or beverage.
It's interesting how everything revolves around food.
Everywhere you go, there's something to eat or drink.
It can be hot cocoa. It doesn't matter!
French women are skinny because they don't finish their plate.
-I didn't see one finishing it! -Their servings are small for me!
-It's too small for me! -I easily finish it!
-I need six. -It's a problem to me.
I like it better in Italy. They have big servings.
In France, I can never have enough.
I have to fill up with baguettes.
MUSIC FESTIVAL
-Say it. -Music festival.
It's always on June 21.
It's the beginning of the summer in France.
After François Mitterrand, in the 1980's,
they picked a day
in which everyone can play music on the streets.
You can make any noise you want.
-In Paris? -All around France.
But now there's a thing.
Some countries adopted June 21 as their music festival day.
You put together people that are professional musicians...
Some people just play for themselves.
People simply go to the streets. You can play by your house.
You meet a friend who's playing somewhere else
and you go see him.
-It's something so... -It's an event.
It's so very nice and it's free.
All concerts are free. There are cool stages and all.
-That's interesting. -Maybe not for a tourist.
If you want to just explore and people are playing...
Exactly.
-If you like to party... -It's good to know.
If you like to hang out with friends and meet people...
If you're a tourist, you'll see people.
French people are not all that uncommunicative.
If you're partying and you say you're from Brazil...
You become an act.
-You can hook up with people. -Right.
That I don't know.
Something you can't miss in Nantes
is Royal de Luxe, the theatre company.
They have ginormous puppets.
-They have cranes moving them. -Wow! Really?
They perform on the streets.
They have a giant on a standard diving dress.
They have the girl.
They tell stories. Then you see the boat.
It's all on the streets.
They have the firefighters there throwing water to mimic rain.
It's a crane-operated puppet show.
A place I like but that is not well-known
is Rocamadour.
It's basically a city situated on a cliff
over a river.
It's by the Dordogne River and it's a monastic city.
There're many monasteries.
They found a hermit's body there.
After that, they found a Black Virgen there,
Litanies à la Vierge Noire.
It's one of my favorite places in France.
-You don't hear about it. -I've never heard about it.
-You need to research. -I thought you're making it up.
-Dordogne... What a name! -Dordogne.
The city is wonderful.
It was the place of pilgrimage for Renaissance kings
between the 11th through the 13th century.
-Should you stay overnight? -Explore it during the day.
You can sleep there too. The restaurants are adorable.
I'm not religious but the pilgrimage
gives you the goosebumps.
It really moves you.
It's such a beautiful place and people don't talk about it.
There's a story about their cheese.
A king got there and tasted their cheese.
-He tried and... -Bye. I'm going to Rocamadour.
French people are so cute.
I love listening when they're talking with that accent.
Yeah.
Everything sounds like it's a tiny thing, petit.
-A sweet little thing. -It all sounds like this...
It all sound like it's small.
"You should go to this little restaurant
have this little..."
-It's always like this. -You can't even disagree.
-"Of course, I'll go." -"Of course, I'll go."
But I can't spell what they're saying.
I can't even start.
The person is there, helping me,
and I know I'll have to Google it.
Exactly! They need subtitles when they speak.
You have to say it as it sounds in Portuguese.

But they say it with that thick accent.
And you don't know how many vowels and consonants is there.
