Eye for an Eye: One of the Greatest Ideas in History - Duration: 5:23.

Even atheists acknowledge that the book that is most responsible for creating Western civilization

is the Bible.

Until very recently, that was considered quite an achievement.

After all, it was Western civilization that created societies rooted in individual liberty,

rooted in democracy, that affirmed the equality of all people, and which gave the world the

notion of universal human rights.

Of course, these unique moral ideals took centuries to be realized, and the ideals were

often violated.

But only the West formulated these ideals, let alone achieved them — and then spread

them around the world.

In the last half century, however, many of the recipients of these gifts — especially

the well-educated — no longer regarded Western civilization as morally superior to any other.

And as reverence for Western civilization fell, so did reverence for the source of that

civilization.

The Bible has not only been neglected, but reviled — as a foolish fairy tale at best,

and as an immoral work at worst.

This view springs not from intellectual rigor, but from intellectual laziness.

People throw out all sorts of objections to the Bible as if there are no rational and

moral responses to those objections.

But the fact is there are rational and moral responses to all those objections.

I give many of them in my book, The Rational Bible, but let me offer two here.

In the biblical book of Deuteronomy, it says if someone has a rebellious  son  who

does not obey his father and mother, his parents can take him to the elders of the city

for judgment.

And if the son is found guilty, the citizens are to stone him to death.

Sounds pretty primitive, doesn't it?

In fact, however, it was an enormous moral leap forward.

This law ended — forever — parental ownership of their children, and with it the right to kill them.

The brilliance of this law was that it seemed to preserve the absolute authority of parents,

but in fact ended it.

But, you will respond, the citizens of the city could still kill the child.

Theoretically, that was true.

But we have no instance of it ever happening in the history of the Jews — the people

who brought the book into the world and lived by its rules.

Critics of Western religion also often cite the famous biblical law, "an eye for an eye,

tooth for tooth, hand for hand," etc. as another example of an immoral biblical law.

But this law — known by its Latin name, lex talionis, the law of retaliation —

was another great moral advance.

It was not meant to be taken literally, and it never was — for the simple reason that

it's impossible to exactly duplicate bodily harm.

Only "a life for a life" was meant literally and taken literally: there is capital punishment

for premeditated murder.

So, then, what did it mean?

For one thing, lex talionis is the ultimate statement of human equality.

Every person's eye is as precious as anyone else's.

The eye of a prince is worth no more than the eye of a peasant.

This was completely new in history.

The Babylonian Code of Hammurabi, for example, legislated that the eye of a noble was of

much greater value than the eye of a commoner.

Second, the principle of "an eye for an eye" ensured only the guilty party was punished

for his crime.

In other law codes and in common practice, if you killed someone's daughter, your daughter

would be killed.

That was expressly prohibited in the Bible and by the "eye for an eye" code.

Now the killer would be punished, not the killer's daughter.

Third, lex talionis prohibited unjust revenge.

In the ancient world, if a man gouged out another man's eye, the victim, if he could,

would gouge out both the attacker's eyes, or kill him, or hurt his children, and so on.

In contrast, "eye for an eye" ensured the victim receive appropriate compensation

for the damages he suffered, but the punishment had to fit the crime.

The next time you read or hear someone argue that the Bible is irrational or immoral, tell

them how the stone-the-rebellious-son law ended parental killing of children and how

the "eye for an eye" law struck a unique blow for human equality and justice.

If they're intellectually honest, they'll admit that they have learned something new.

I'm Dennis Prager.

Things They Don't Tell You About Cerebral Palsy: TOILET SEATS - Duration: 4:42.

Hello and welcome to...

with the only person low enough to tell you about these things..

ME!

And in the first episode we are going to start from great heights and talk about...

Toilet seats

I know, how shit!

Hell, I'm not in the business of fat-shaming I don't think anyone can break a toilet seat

due to being to fat for it

but it's incredibly easy to break a toilet seat due to being too spack for it.

A toilet seat is much like an egg for a number of reasons:

Firstly, it contains a shitload of protein

Secondly, if you don't cook it before you eat it you might get salmonella

But thirdly, it can withstand a whole lot of pressure if applied gently

but can stand fuck-all shock pressure.

No matter how heavy you are, if you lower yourself down smoothly onto a toilet seat you're safe to shit

but if you lower yourself down slightly erratically or even just at an ever-so-slightly off angle

you're in trouble

and unless it's one of the most heavy-duty of the things

you will likely twist and even break the fucker.

Trust me, I've done this countless times even though I thought I was being careful

to be as gentle as possible.

I mean I don't stand to pee because haha that's not gonna work, is it?

But there are sometimes I have to sit on the pan with the seat up

just coz the seat looks to flimbsy and I know I'm gonna break it.

If you have a guest round with CP and they make a mess of your toilet seat

be gentle with them we probably can't help it.

Though note I said "mess OF your toilet seat"

not "mess ON your toilet seat"

if anyone makes a mess on your toilet seat give them shit

which is quite appropriate really!

So, this episode's thing they don't tell you about CP is...

if you have CP toilet seats will be DESTROYED!!

Are You Characterized by Being Mournful? I Hope You Are! | Daily Little Lessons with David Servant - Duration: 8:18.

Are you characterized by being mournful?

I hope you are.

Hi, welcome to today's little lesson.

In our previous few little lessons we've been looking at the beginning of what are commonly

referred to as the beatitudes, right at the beginning of the sermon on the mount, they

are the characteristics of the blessed.

Who are the blessed?

The blessed are the people who are on the road to heaven, and that becomes real clear

as you read through all of them.

The first one of course was, "Blessed are those who are poor in spirit ..." we defined

that over the last two little lessons, "there's is the kingdom of heaven."

The second one, in Matthew chapter 5 and verse 4, follows logically after the first beatitude,

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

Now, again, this is not a unique characteristic for some Christians who get a unique blessing.

This, again, as we read through all the beatitudes, what I'm claiming here becomes irrefutably

clear, these are characteristics that are shared by all true believers, and the blessings

that they are promised, all can be summed up in, "One day you're going to be a member,

a citizen of God's kingdom."

There's is the kingdom of heaven, and those who are mourning now, they shall be comforted.

So you might ask yourself the question, "Well, I thought one of the fruit of the Spirit is

joy, and so Christians ought to be characterized by joy."

Well, that is of course true, and we're never going to mitigate anything else that's in

the Bible because of this one verse.

But as I've said over and over again, when you read a verse in the Bible, make sure your

interpretation of that verse harmonizes with what the rest of the Bible teaches, because

the themes run throughout the whole Bible, the important ones certainly do.

So in what way should all Christians be mournful?

Well, the previous beatitude, those who are poor or beggarly in spirit, they're obviously

mourning in those cases about their own sin, which is what drives them to the foot of the

cross, drives them to God, and cry out to him for mercy and forgiveness and grace.

So we're mournful, first of all, over our own sins that indicate at one time that we

were rebels against God without any cause.

But on the wider scale of the entire world, we're mournful about everyone's rebellion

against God, it just bugs us, it makes us so sad inwardly.

It's something you don't ever get any relief from, because it's always there.

I'm thinking of a verse in Romans chapter 9, I think it's around verse number 22, but

don't quote me on that, where Paul said, "I've got great sorrow, and unceasing grief in my

heart."

You get that?

Great sorrow, unceasing grief in my heart.

Why?

Well, in that case he was talking specifically about his countrymen, the descendants of Israel,

and he has great sorrow and unceasing grief because of their rejection of their Messiah.

Now, was Paul depressed about that?

Always under a dark cloud, gloom and doom?

No, no, no, no.

No doubt he experienced also that joy unspeakable and full of glory, he wrote about that, right?

So it's kind of odd that we can be both joyful and mournful at the same time, but this is

something every true believer knows.

We have the promise from Jesus that we will be comforted.

Now, you could interpret that various ways.

I tend to think that the comfort is a future comfort that's coming when God's kingdom is

established on this earth, and there's nothing to be sorrowful about.

You know, God's going to wipe away all of our tears, we're told in Scripture.

There will be no more sorrow.

But for now, our greatest sorrow is people's rebellion towards God, and so naturally, that's

why we share the gospel, that's why we try to let our light shine before other people,

so that they'll see, in hopes that they'll wake up, come out of their slumber and sleep,

and awake to righteousness, and awake to faith and repentance in Jesus Christ.

That's motivated partially by that mournful feeling that we've got.

You know, it's interesting, Paul wrote that the entire creation groans and it mourns,

as it were, waiting for the revelation of the sons of God, waiting for our redemption.

Because this is not the end game, folks, this is just the testing time.

God's got a better plan for us than what's going on on this planet right now.

One day our prayers will be answered that we prayed over and over again, "May your will

be done on earth as it is done in heaven."

One day, one day.

I think, this view of what it means to be consistently mournful as a characteristic

of a blessed person who's going to inherit the kingdom of God, who's going to be comforted

one day.

It fits very well into the very next beatitude that Christ lists where he says, "Blessed

are those who ..." Excuse me, not the next one.

We'll have to skip one.

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness."

See, again, that reflects that true believers, the blessed people, hunger and thirst for

righteousness on every level.

But one of the levels that we hunger and thirst for righteousness is of course the worldwide

level.

We want everyone to repent and believe in Jesus and experience all the blessings now

and in the future that await for those kinds of folks.

So it bugs us, it bugs us, and does it bug us?

Okay, so are you characterized by mourning for these things, as was the apostle Paul?

He spoke specifically of his unceasing grief, his great sorrow for his countrymen.

But of course that carried over into everybody who hadn't yet come to the light, who was

still walking in darkness.

Does that characterize you?

Well, then, you are blessed, because that shows you've been born again and you're heading

towards the kingdom of heaven, and even though you're mourning now, don't worry, one day

you will be comforted.

Praise God, no more sadness, no more tears, because there are going to be new heavens,

new earth, Jesus ruling and reigning over it all, and everybody who's in that kingdom

will be joyfully submissive to him.

All right, thank you so much for joining me on today's little lesson.

God bless you
