How To Learn English Grammar The NATIVE Way - Just VS Only - Duration: 4:24.

Hi there!

I'm Drew Badger, the world's #1 English Fluency Guide!

better understand JUST and ONLY.

But please know that this video will focus on a SPECIFIC situation, because this is how

NATIVES learn English.

Try to learn ALL of the uses of any vocabulary word in one video and you'll only forget

them…

But if you focus on a SPECIFIC SITUATION, you'll remember what you learn so you always

say the right thing at the right time.

Does that make sense?

Well, my wife and I have always had lots of conversations about language learning.

I'm from the US, and she's from Japan.

But we have even more discussions about words now that Aria, our three-year-old daughter,

is really speaking a lot.

Recently, when my wife, Aria, my wife's parents and I were having dinner, Aria asked me what

I was drinking.

When I told her, "Just water," a discussion began about translating that sentence into

Japanese.

My wife's mother - who also knows quite a bit of English - asked if "only" could replace

"just" in this case.

I explained that she could, but that the meaning COULD be slightly different.

"Just" and "only" CAN sometimes have the same meaning, which is why she asked.

An example of when they mean the same thing is when you want so say you have a small or

limited amount of something:

"I JUST have 10 minutes to do my work."

"I ONLY have 10 minutes to do my work."

But when I told Aria I was "just" having water, this meant that the drink was NOTHING SPECIAL.

I wasn't drinking something more interesting like juice, wine or whatever.

I was "just" having water.

Now, you CAN use "only" in this situation, but "just" is much more common because the

meaning is MORE CLEAR.

Imagine if you go to a friend's house and they ask you if you'd like something to drink.

You could reply by saying "(Just) water is fine."

And you'd mean that YOU DON'T NEED ANYTHING SPECIAL OR FANCY because you don't want them

to go through any trouble for you.

You're answering their polite offering with a polite response.

"Only water..." in this situation COULD have the same meaning, but it could ALSO mean that

you can't or won't drink anything other than water.

See way natives prefer "just" in this situation?

So, if you're at a restaurant and your server asks you if you'd like anything to drink with

your order, but you don't want anything special or interesting, you'd say:

"Just water, please."

Now, you try it!

May I bring you any beer or wine?

Just water, thanks!

Would you like some juice or a cocktail with dinner?

Just water, please!

You're now a bit more fluent because you learned some spoken English the same way natives

do.

Feels pretty good, right?

To finally reach fluency, all you have to do is REPEAT this process with more situations

until you "FEEL" what's correct automatically.

rectangular shaped but it still lips up a little at the edge and my son's also

does that his lips over right here and you've got about four inches and up here

it lips over which takes up space when you are trying to fill that suitcase

full when you are filling your suitcase full you want to be able to fill it all

the way up and then have some more room to stuff it if you need to right so if

it's capped on one of the sides you can't come straight up you've got to

lose that space and then you can start expanding if that makes sense

I do prefer a soft sided luggage instead of the plastic or metal or hardshell

case suitcases for carry-on luggage because this can squish in the overhead

bin it is so stuffed full with mashed potatoes and gravy from Thanksgiving it

is so stuffed that you can squish it just a little bit to get it in that

overhead bin as well as the bag sizer and then

exempt from paying the check bag fee with the hardshell metal hard plastic

micro whatever tanzanite it is not going to budge when you are trying to squish

it you can see that the 22 inch size suitcases are about the size of the bulk

toilet paper that we buy at Costco if you're wanting to look for your suitcase

in person I recommend taking a little measuring tape because you are going to

measure the fill space not the length from the wheels to the handles you're

going to see how many inches less it is of a suitcase based on how far the

wheels come off this says it's 22 inches by travelpro n is 21 and a half inches

this suitcase that I got from TJ Maxx the best one that I found at t.j.maxx

based on our experience is 21 inches and it does have 21 inches of fill space -

this little lip that comes over right here so it is comparable in size and

finding the best carry-on luggage and that is the features of your suitcase I

really like since I get cold on airplanes having a large outer pocket

this pocket as well as the Samsonite wouldn't only come out like that

so you're not opening the entire suitcase pocket right there but you can

stuff a heavy winter coat down there or a hoodie like a hooded sweatshirt and

thing that I do a little travel tip that I use is I don't put on my belt until I

have gone through airport security so I keep my belt down in here I keep my

jewelry that I'm gonna wear in here another feature that luggage should have

on the outside is a little pocket now this one has one right here these are

not three pockets right here they're just texture it does have a zipped

pocket which is great you can hide things and protect things secure things

my suitcase has the pocket on the inside and that's where I store my passport

just until I grab my bag until I get to my bench to get my bag organized and put

on my shoes again put on my belt and my jewelry then I can transfer that

passport to my person or my other travel bag or my personal item we got my son's

suitcase at Target and it has lasted us five years as well it is much smaller

than mine but he has fewer things that he cares about taking but zippers are

another major key feature to finding the best luggage I like metal zippers I like

them not too long not too short I like the rubber-tipped zippers and you

also want to look at what is connecting or attaching the zipper to the actual

metal and that quality is majorly important you don't want a little bitty

keyring a thin piece of metal you won't solid metal attaching that zipper to the

actual teeth of your zipper if that makes sense I did find one at t.j.maxx

and it was awful it was sharp and pointy a very heavy and the zipper also was

really long was just too high-maintenance so I recommend a short

sweet smooth all the way around kind of zippers I also recommend if you're

buying a cheap off-brand luggage that's super cute on the outside and they

hooked you in by the totally cute fabric I recommend that you try the zipper out

all the way around do it fast and do it slowly to see the quality of that zipper

another feature to look for when finding the best carry-on luggage is

look at the handle the luggage handle is great this is flat it's combined

seamless that's really nice but this is what I want you to notice if you are

right-handed you're gonna be picking up your suitcase like that to put it in the

overhead bin you need a handle on the left hand side so if you're looking down

at your suitcase that other handle should be on the left hand side because

when you are lifting it up it is so hard to lift up a suitcase no matter how much

weight you've done with just your right hand and I do not recommend although

most suitcases it's really good if you do have a handle on the bottom but those

aren't the only two you want because if you're in an airplane and you have to

grab the bottom of your suitcase handle you're gonna be squatting in that

airplane all the way to the bottom of the floor to pick up all of your

suitcase and lift it all the way over your head to fit it in the overhead bin

all of these suitcases have a handle here and on this left hand side I also

recommend looking for the expandable feature on your luggage this Samsonite

as well as my Travel Pro has an extra section that is expandable the travel

pro one is quite large if you want to expand it it's several inches probably

another four inches that I can expand just that inner side and I will tell you

what I use inside this expandable section I pack two or three pairs of

shoes I pack a hardback books you can fit so much extra stuff in just this

section of your suitcase if it has an expandable section leaving more space in

the base of your suitcase so this is a very valuable feature to look for let me

know in the comments if you even care about the little straps that are in the

base of your suitcase that actually buckle I don't think very many people

care about that feature inside a suitcase the number one travel tip to

finding the best carry-on luggage is to look at the wheels in t.j.maxx all of

the wheels were just free hanging like this nowadays when you get up to your

gate and you are fixing to board airplane they are going to say oh the

airplanes full because of all of the extra heavy coats in the winter and

because of all the people who are bringing on their free suitcases and

personal items and you still have 60 people behind you in line and now you

have to check your carry-on suitcase this is going to go in the belly of the

airplane which is not bad for wheels that hang off like this but it's when

they go underneath the airport through and to the baggage claim when it has the

most chance of ripping off of those wheels getting ripped off I want you to

look at my travelPro wheels it's almost as if they're built into the base of the

suitcase they are a little bit wide but they're not hanging free a couple of

them did have a wall kind of like this one a wall that would maybe protect the

wheel but again it's hanging completely off of the suitcase it's not nestled

anywhere in there another reason why I think checking the wheels is the number

one tip to finding the best luggage is because if you are traveling to Europe

or Washington DC and are going on a subway system with your suitcases you

need durable wheels that can go up stairs of escalators over huge potholes

in those sidewalks I have taken this suitcase several times to Paris the

streets of Paris and my wheels have done fine there are some pretty rugged roads

there's so much to think about when you're trying to find the best carry-on

luggage be sure to read the fine print of your airline I was shocked to find

out that American Airlines would consider deer antlers a carry-on item

and they would have to pay $150 to put that inside the airplane with on their

person that means they could not take a carry-on suitcase because that is their

carry-on item now they only have space for a personal item which is not a

suitcase I also thought it was odd but good if a soft sided garment bag is

considered a carry-on so therefore you cannot take a carry-on suitcase you only

can take a personal item because most of the major airlines you get a

carry-on item and then a personal bag a stroller however it does not count as a

carry-on that can be the third item that you bring

there are several cool items that the airlines do allow so check out that fine

REAL ENGLISH VOCABULARY: 10 words to talk about MONEY & PRICES - Duration: 7:54.

Hello, there, and welcome back to engVid. In today's lesson we are going to have ten

words that come from the world of banking and business, but have an everyday function;

that have a function if you are a holidaymaker and are looking at exchanging money, for example,

or just going to another place and using money. Let's face it - we've all got to use it.

So, first word today: "rate". There's a couple of different meanings of this word. It can

mean the cost of something; or used as a verb: "What do you think of something?" Let's have

some practical examples. "What is your rate for...?" Or: "Give me your best rate." What

we're... We're thinking here is... Is sort of price; cost. "What is your best rate? I

want your best rate." Particularly if you go to a country where haggling is more of

a norm, then you're going to be trying to negotiate. Here in the UK things tend to be...

there tends to be a set price for certainly things in a shop. "How would you rate...?"

So: "How would you rate the service provided? What do you think of it?"

Moving on to our second word: "commission". Okay? This word, if we're thinking of a slice...

You know, a whole pizza, and there is a middle man... So, for example, I'm booking a hotel

in India and I have someone there who is doing the booking for me, then he's going to take

a small slice of the pizza and eat it for himself, and the rest of the pizza will go

to the hotel. Metaphor; obviously we're talking about money. A practical example of "commission":

"We charge 0% commission." Let's put this into another context. Let's say I'm going

to Spain and I want some euros so that I can have some money there, I go along to the sort

of money exchange, and they say: "We charge 0% commission." That's great. Just be warned

that their rates may be not so friendly; they're going to make their money from the rate, not

the commission.

Next word: "charge". Now, this can be both a noun and a verb. "Are there any extra charges?"

Okay? Say I'm paying for a hotel in Spain: "Are there any extra charges?" Taxes, for

example. Used as a verb: "What do you charge? What do you charge?" Or: "My charge is..."

Okay? If you're saying what you'd like to be paid for a day's work, for example.

"Fee". This is a noun. Again, it relates to payment. "My fee is..." Or: "The fee for this

is..." Or: "We do charge a fee of..." Okay? Saying we're still at the money exchange:

"We do charge a fee of..."

All right. "Cost" and "price", this, relating to amount of money. "So the overall cost for

changing 100 pounds into euros is..." Or... "So the overall cost for 100 euros is 80 pounds."

Okay? "Cost".

Next words: "transfer". So, a word that may pop up in your science textbook; it's really

relating to this idea of change, and it can be used both as a noun and as a verb. We're

going off on this holiday to Spain. "I just received a transfer from my friend." That

means they changed money from their account into my account. Well, hey, off to the beach.

Pina colada for me. Or: "I made my transfer..." Let's say, for example, that I was flying

from London to Paris; from Paris to Barcelona - I don't know why I would because you could

fly straight, but let's just pretend: "transfer" is getting the changing flight. So, it's making

sure that when you're in Paris, you get onto that change; that next flight - the change

of flight.

So, there I am in Spain. Now there's been a new development - a plot development because

I have just had a "cut" in my salary. Now, "cut" means something taken off. So I now

have less money that I am being paid each month. Because of this, I am going to need

to make a "cutback". "Cutback" is a noun; means a reduction. I'm going to need to make

some cutbacks in my spending. Now, you can also use this as a phrasal verb. For example:

"I will need to cut back..." Now, there should actually be a space here. As the noun, one

word; but if you're going to use it as the phrasal verb, then you want to just separate

it. So: "I will need to cut back on my spending."

"Coupon", next word. "Coupon" is a discount voucher. Well, this could help here. So, this

helps you pay less in places like amusement parks, for example, or a cinema. "I will use

the coupon to gain entry to the park."

And lastly, we have: "cashback". So, some credit cards, you'll make a payment, and after

the payment you may get a cashback; so they may give you some money in return. Or, say

I go shopping and I don't have any... Any notes, I could say: "Do you offer any cashback

facilities? Do you offer any cashback facilities?" and I... They would say: "Yes", perhaps. And

I would say: "Fantastic. Could I have 40 pounds cashback?" and then they put that onto my

cost of what I've been shopping... Of my shopping. Okay? So, "cashback" is when we get money

in return. Sometimes it's a gift from a credit card, and sometimes it's something that you

pay for.

Ten new words. Have you got them? I think it's time that you tested yourself and did

today's quiz. "Rate"; "commission"; "charge"; "fee"; "cost" and "price"; we've got "transfer",

remember that idea of change; "cut" - taking something off; "cutback" - reducing; "coupon"

is that little printed leaflet that you take along to say: "I'm paying less"; and "cashback"

- when you get that little bit of money back after buying something. Thank you so much

these are planted in the month of may and collected it in December

we can collect the turmeric from its roots

after some time I will show you the turmeric but before that I want to tell you something

this turmeric has many medicinal properties in it

like if you make a paste of this raw turmeric and applied it in our skin it can help to recover many skin diseases like pimple, rashes etc.

and also it has many beneficial properties of liver

now I will show you how we get those turmerics.

Till these turmerics plants are green we have to give water and whenever the plant turns to get brown in color we have to stop giving the water

and we have to keep it in this state in a dry place

now you can collect turmeric from here and use it as per your need

you can use it by making a paste

or you can eat this raw turmeric also

but what benefits you can get after applying this turmeric paste in your body you can never get in any market turmerics

so I suggest everyone should cultivate the turmeric at home and get the benefits of it.

here you can see I am using these big containers as a tree pot

so I am making holes in the bottom of these containers for drainage of water

if you want you can make these holes bigger

I am spreading some dry leaves on the bottom of the containers so that the soil can't block the water drainage holes

here the soil I am using, it contains a mix of 25% dust cow dunk and 75% soil

if you want to keep the turmeric fresh for a long time then store the turmerics under some dry sand or soil

then it will not get dry

I personally kept these turmerics under the sand and in a place which has no contact with water

the perfect time for planting this turmeric plant is just before the monsoon

here see the time has come so the bud started to come out

when we plant it we have to keep an eye so that the buds don't break

we get turmerics from its root so we have to take special care of its roots so that the roots will be thicker and healthier

that's why I am spreading these rotten dry leaves over the roots area

these rotten dry leaves help to keep the pot lighter in weight and also it will work as a compost fertilizer.

now you can see the turmerics plants have started to come out, now what we have to do is to remove the weeds and give water time to time

you can give cow dunk water or mustard cake water at an interval of 15 to 20 days if you think it necessary

if you think that the plant's growth is not happening properly then you can use a little bit of chemical fertilizer

I am showing you how to cultivate a lot within a small place using this technics

you can call it vertical technics also

this way you can put one over another up to four without any support

if you want to keep in this way more than four then you have to provide support

we have to make three holes at the edge of the three sides of the pot and bind them with any rod or bamboo stick so that the pots doesn't fall down
