The Origins Of National Flags - Flags Explained - Duration: 4:17.

The whole world is watching as you are presented your medal and your national anthem starts to play.

Also, your country's flag - the nation whose colours you represent, whose pride you embody…

Is being flown in honour of your achievement.

Why?

Why a flag?

Why not a sign with your country's name on it?

Or a stick with some animal on top?

Let's look at the origins of national flags.

National flags do not have a fixed point in time when someone, now famous, invented them.

They came about, evolving from earlier ideas.

It's most likely that flags, as we know them, developed from the military standard.

Standards probably originated in Ancient Egypt about 3,000 years ago…

…and were - amongst others - used by the Roman Empire as part of their large armies.

Roman armies had various standards, such as the signum, the aquila,…

…And the vexillum - which is where we got the word vexillology from…

…The study of flags.

The vexillum was a square piece of woven fabric, hanging from a crossbar, carried on a pole.

The loss of any standard was considered an embarrassment, the aquila, especially.

Flags recognised as such, and not as banners, probably originated in Asia,...

...either India or China.

It is mentioned that the founder of the Zhou dynasty had a white flag carried before him.

Chinese flags were adorned with a bird, tiger or dragon.

Likewise, as with a military standard, the fall of a flag meant defeat.

In ancient India, flags had similar importance, being carried on chariots and elephants.

…The fall of a flag, here, too, meant defeat or at least confusion during battle.

They were often triangular, with red or green, and a figure embroidered in gold.

National flags as we know them today, were most likely originated by islamic people:

In the Middle Ages called Saracens.

As Islam prohibits the use of idolatrous images, they used greatly simplified flags using black,

white, green or red.

These early flags found their way to Europe, where the first national flags were adopted

in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

In Europe, flags already existed in many forms, such as banners, pennons, streamers and of course...

...standards.

Flags were used for many things. But the idea of a national flag was new and took hold;

The Cross of Saint George being adopted as England's flag, in the 13th century, ...

...being a famous example.

Later combining it with the Cross of Saint Andrew, and the Cross of Saint Patrick,...

...to form the Union Flag.

Kings, countries, organisations, cities, guilds all started to adopt flags.

From this point on national flags increasingly became part of nations' identities.

Some flags were based on heraldry, on religious symbolism or something else entirely.

The red-white-and-blue Dutch flag became synonymous with liberty and republican government,...

...due to its long war for independence from Spain.

France adopted the same colours following the French Revolution.

Other countries would also adopt the three colours to express equal principles.

The Soviet Union flew a red flag with hammer and sickle, solidifying the colour's association...

...with communism.

Than there are the flags of predominantly Muslim countries, using mostly traditional colours.

And there are more families of flags.

We'll cover these and other types of flags in future episodes.

farming see if I'm getting it get it to like 70 or 80 while I'm doing thieving

on the side and nightmare zone came in handy because these are redirect

teleports are pretty Oh P look now I'm like right by one of the tree wait wait

what the hell where am I hello boom all only one okay anyway um I'm done with

the willow anyway so i'ma go and do some maple trees let's see how this goes what

I don't I can't so this one is just gonna be chilling I don't have no use

for you and then you pay her I pay her sorry third person there you go and it's

pretty cool doing that little thieving techniques I was just on my ever account

and I'm actually helping somebody out even though I'm not physically here as

Hi there! We are Linus, Paul and Fabio,

and we are the project team „EatMe. I'm Low Carbon." of TUM: Junge Akademie.

We are wondering what people think about the carbon footprint and whether they consider it in their diet in any way.

To find that out, we will be running around a little in the Munich pedestrian area today and ask the people a few things.

Paul: Excuse me, what are you doing for your carbon footprint actually?

- Uhm...honestly, I think not a lot.

- It's not really something I pay attention to

Linus: What are you doing for your carbon footprint?

- What I am doing for it?

- Yes, I use the bike to go shopping sometimes.

- I'm doing agriculture, I actually produce that as well.

- I know, uhm..., that I am leaving a very high carbon footprint.

Linus: So you know what a carbon footprint is?

- Yes. - Yes.

Linus: Could you shortly describe it to me in your own words?

- How much CO2-emissions you, so to say, emit, when you are using things

or when you are on the road or travelling.

Linus: Do you pay attention to the CO2 of food when shopping groceries?

- Not at all.

- Organic products, I don't know whether that has an influence, but...

- I don't actually know, when do I ever buy groceries?

Linus: Groceries? - My wife does that, I don't buy these things.

Linus: Which of these two things would you rather give up? Driving a car or eating meat?

- I sort of think that the car gives a certain freedom, and I somehow don't want to give that away.

- Driving a car.

Linus: Why? - Well, because I like to eat meat

- Simply for culinary reasons, let's put it this way.

- Probably rather eating meat.

Linus: Are the potatoes or the rice more greenhouse gas intensive?

- I would say... potatoes.

- Uhm... rice.

Paul: And why? - Because it's from a little farther away.

Linus: It's in fact as follows: Rice is grown under water, where methane producing bacteria

can flourish very well, and they will then emit methane, and methane has a very high climate impact.

Linus: Which of these two products is better for the climate?

- I think vegetables.

- I would also say vegetables.

- Because... a lot of animals...produce a lot of methane.

Linus: You can see three different groups of dairy products on this poster: milk, cheese and cream.

Which of these products causes the most CO2?

- The milk the least, then the cream and the cheese the most.

- This should cause the least, because it's not processed.

- And then the cream and then the cheese.

- So, I would say exactly the contrary. I would say cream, milk and then cheese, but these are just my gut feelings.

Linus: Do you feel well informed about CO2 when shopping groceries?

- No, not at all.

- Until I met you just now, not at all, really.

- Well, it could be a little more, I personally think.

Linus: Then we have something for you here: we have designed a little poster.

This is quite simple, at the top of the poster several product categories

are ordered by their CO2 intensity, and additionally we also have three tips for you.

Paul: Namely: buying regional and seasonal food,

buying products which are not that highly processed,

and that you should use your car less.

AWADHI KESARIYA TIKKI II अवधि केसरिया टिक्की II BY CHEF POONAM DEDHIA II - Duration: 2:36.

Hello friends..

Myself Poonam Dedhia, I welcome you all to my kitchen.

Today we are going to make one of the finest recipe of Awadhi Cuisine.

Which is actually a starter, everyone's favourite & its name is Awadhi Kesariya Tikki.

Taking Grated Fresh Mawa in a bowl

Grated Malai Paneer (Cottage Cheese)

Cashew powder, in herbs we are using some fresh chopped coriander leaves

Since its Awadhi Kesariya dish then we shall add Saffron along with green cardamom powder

Chopped Green Chillies, Roasted Cumin Seeds Powder, salt to taste

Fresh breadcrumbs for binding & Cornflour

Mix all the ingredients

Mix it the way you mash potatoes, almost like mashing.

Now all the ingredients are mixed well.

As you can see I've got a nice binding to it.

Now let's make tikkis, if you want you can make square or oval shape

Whichever shape you like, give a fine round shape from all the sides

Make sure there is no crack in any side.

All the tikkis are ready, time to shallow fry them.

Place the tikkis very carefully as in all the ingredients used are very delicate.

Allow it to become brown from both the sides, let's check it once

As soon it gets nice brown colour that means its time to change that means the other side

Let the other side also get brown

After shallow fry, nice and golden tikkis are ready

Taking them out very carefully on the tissue paper

As I already said that these tikkis are very delicate

For plating I've mixed some green chutney and cheese spread in a piping bag.

On its one side we'll place out tikkis

Also I've prepared a salad(juliennes), which contains of Red bell pepper, yellow bell pepper & regular onion.

Placing them on the side along with a lemon slice.

So here we have a tasty and an another recipe of Awadhi cuisine"Awadhi Kesariya Tikki"
